You want to install a new car stereo, but you don't want to lose the useful features built into your factory radio. The Axxess AX-ADBOX2 interface module gives you the ability to connect your new radio to the existing wiring in your vehicle and keep your factory features working. When used with the required Axxess interface harness for your car (sold separately), this module automatically configures itself to work with your vehicle's data system. You'll keep the features you've become accustomed to, including OnStar®, Bluetooth®, safety warning chimes, Retained Accessory Power (RAP), and the SYNC® system.

This Axxess module works with amplified and non-amplified systems. The AX-ADBOX2 gives you a “plug and play” connection for the Axxess ASWC-1 steering wheel interface (sold separately). And if you're installing a new navigation receiver, the AX-ADBOX2 also includes the parking brake, reverse, mute, and Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) outputs you'll need.

Installation note: The Axxess AX-ADBOX2 must be used with one of the following Axxess vehicle-specific interface harnesses: AX-ADCH01, AX-ADCH02, AX-ADFD01, AX-ADFD02, AX-ADGM01, AX-ADGM02, AX-ADGM03, AX-ADMZ01, AX-ADTY01, or AX-ADVW01.

Auto-Detect System Interface: The Axxess AX-ADBOX2 interface module auto detects the vehicle it is in and automatically configures itself to work seamlessly with that vehicle. Factory Amplified/Non-Amplified Compatible: The Axxess AX-ADBOX2 interface module can be used in vehicles with or without factory amplifiers, including digital amplified systems. The AX-ADBOX2 provides an amp turn-on lead (Blue/white) to turn on any factory amps. Retains balanced & fade in vehicles with factory analog amplifier. Does not retain fader in vehicles with factory digital amplifier.

Navigation Outputs: The Axxess AX-ADBOX2 auto-detect system interface provides a VSS (vehicle speed sense), Parking Brake, Mute, and a Reverse Gear output to make installing an aftermarket navigation radio simpler and less time consuming.

R.A.P (Retained Accessory Power): The ignition power source of many vehicles keeps the radio on until one of the doors is opened. This feature is called the R.A.P. (retained accessory power). The AX-ADBOX2 is designed to retain this feature.

GM Onstar Retention + Other Retained Features: The AX-ADBOX2 is designed to retain the factory OnStar emergency services system that would normally be lost when your GM factory radio is replaced by an aftermarket head unit. This interface module will also retain your GM factory Bluetooth & Satellite Radio functionality. In addition, the Axxess auto-detect system interface retains your GM vehicle's factory warning chimes and turn-signals. It even allows you to keep your factory back up camera and rear seat entertainment.

Ford SYNC Retention: The Axxess AX-ADBOX2 retains all functions of the Ford SYNC system; including Voice Recognition Music Search, USB, iPod, Auxiliary Input, Bluetooth Phone & Audio Streaming, Turn-by-Turn Navigation, 911 Assist, and Vehicle Health Report.

Optional Steering Wheel Control Interface: The vehicle specific wiring harness (sold separately) features a right-angle 3.5mm connector that lets you keep your vehicle's OEM steering wheel controls via the optional Axxess Steering Wheel Control Interface (120ASWC1, sold separately).

16-Pin Harness Color Codes: The Axxess AX-ADBOX2 includes a 16-pin harness which connects between the interface module and your aftermarket receiver. These connections will need to be crimped or soldered together.

I'm wondering if I need to buy the steering wheel controls unit ASWC with this, or if this provides that. It's actually pretty confusing to understand what features this actually provides. Do I need to buy the separate device?
