Our take on the Metra VT-GMRC-01 Factory Integration Adapter

by Robert Ferency-Viars

Problem: Installing an aftermarket receiver in many late model GM vehicles means losing the chime that warns the door is open, along with audible safety warnings.

Solution: Metra's VT-GMRC-01 GM Class II Data Bus Interface lets you replace the factory receiver in these vehicles and keep the door chime and all audible safety warnings.

Hook the VT-GMRC-01 to your aftermarket radio, mount the module in a location where the chime can be heard, and plug it into the existing factory plug. Get the great sound you want, and keep all important safety features intact. The VT-GMRC-01 will not work with OnStar equipped vehicles. 1-year warranty.

Important Note: Because your vehicle is factory-equipped with a special sound system, you will need to purchase this VT-GMRC-01 adapter in order to keep your factory door chime (needed to keep audible safety warnings functioning) while providing a switched 12-volt power source for your new radio. If you do not use a compatible adapter when you replace your factory radio, you will disable the audible warning system in your vehicle. Crutchfield cannot provide a free wiring harness for your vehicle, and we strongly recommend that you use the recommended adapter when replacing this vehicle's factory radio. Failure to do so may result in serious injury or death.

Note: Most vehicles will require additional installation parts — please identify your vehicle if you haven’t done so, then check here for a list of parts. You can also call an Advisor for more information.

Retained Features: The GMRC-01 provides +12-volt accessory output, retains warning chimes, and retains R.A.P. (retained accessory power).

  • +12V Accessory Output: In many GM vehicles, there is no 12-volt accessory wire in the factory harness, which requires the installer to run an accessory wire to the fuse box or underneath the steering column when installing an aftermarket radio. The GMRC-01 is designed to provide a 12-volt/10-amp switched accessory output (red wire).
  • Warning Chimes: The GMRC-01 retains factory warning chimes through the use of an on-board speaker.
  • Retained Accessory Power (R.A.P.):  The ignition power source of most GM vehicles keeps the radio on until one of the doors is opened. This feature is called the R.A.P. (retained accessory power). The GMRC-01 is designed to retain this feature.

10-Pin to 24-Pin Harness: The wiring harness has a white 10-pin female connector (4 pins present) on one end and a gray 24-pin male connector (14 pins present) on the other end. The 10-pin connector plugs into the GMRC-01 and the 24-pin connector interfaces with the existing factory plug. The harness also includes 14 bare wires that will need to be hardwired to your new aftermarket radio's harness.

Works fine - case comes apart too easily though

Written By AndrewD, NorCal on Monday, March 03, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The unit seems to work fine. The plastic housing comes apart too easily and doesn't completely mate together, so I put a zip tie around it and through the mounting holes. Sometimes the chime keeps going after I remove my key, so I have to reinsert and remove my key again to make it stop. That only seems to happen if I turn off my ignition and remove my key quickly.

The wiring harness was great for an easy install. I soldered all my connections to my new radio's harness and used shrink tubing to make it insulated and nice. My only complaint is that the illumination wire didn't do anything in my 2005 Silverado. Turns out the GM factory harness doesn't have a wire going to the illumination dimmer port on the connector, so I ended up T-splicing that wire into the brown/white wire running to the HVAC controls and it works fine now. If you're unsure of which wire to split, use a multitester. The voltage on the dimmer wire should vary as you adjust the dimmer control. This only works when the headlights are on, so you may need to cover the day/night sensor on your dash to get the lights on in the daytime.

To the people complaining it is too loud - there are instructions on how to decrease the volume in the pamphlet that came with the device. It involves cutting a circuit on the board.
Pros:
Wiring harness makes install easy Retain warning chimes
Cons:
Illumination/dimmer wire does not work on 2005 chevy Silverado - have to splice into HVAC dimmer wire Plastic housing falls apart easily. Had to zip tie mine closed.

Trouble Maker

Written By Anonymous, Parkville, MD on Monday, February 17, 2014

This adapter "confused" the BCM in my 2005 Colorado. After following all the instructions - exactly - step by step- and reconnecting me truck battery my POWER DOOR LOCKS and my DRIVER'S WINDOW would not work!

After calling tech support I found out that this is not an uncommon problem. On line forums are also full of other frustrated consumers with the identical problem! Why wasn't this issue even hinted at in the product description? I stopped to talk a local car audio store. They checked in their data base and found the there was a warning about this very issue.

Finally - after two weeks and numerous fix attempts suggested by Crutchfield and the on line forums the problem resolved itself. I say "itself" because one morning everything was working again after not working the night before.

Ask a lot of questions before you buy this adapter for your car/truck.

Easy install. Works exactly as advertised. I do suggest soldering connections and using shrink tube insulation over the connections. My only complaint is that the unit is far louder than the original. At some point I will cover half of the speaker in the adapter with a piece of tape or wrap it in cloth.
Pros:
Works as advertised.
Cons:
Very loud, but that can be addressed.

More than loud enough

This was a recommended part to retain the safety chimes that were removed along with the factory stereo. I was worried that it may not be loud enough once it was buried behind the dash, but my worries were unfounded... This puppy is a snap to install and the loudness was perfect, and I got a discount buy buying it as part of the audio package!!! Gotta love that.

Doesn't support illumination on a 2004 Chevrolet.

Written By Anonymous, Champaign, IL. on Sunday, August 25, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Don't let Crutchfield tell you that this is completely compatible on a 2004 Chevrolet Silverado, because the illumination feed doesn't work, and it won't dim the display on the aftermarket radio when the headlight or parking lights are turned on.

Now I get to wait for a different product to be sent to me from a different manufacturer... and get to tear apart and re-wire the whole harness a second time.... along with the time involved for me to remove and re-install the head unit a second time. Plus, for me to get my money back for this first harness, I'll have to box it up, label it , and take it to a UPS location to send it back. Lucky me.

Come on Crutchfield, get it right. Who is going to take responsibility for all of my wasted time and effort? No one. I bought from you because I assumed that you had all of this figured out. Apparently not.
Pros:
Wiring is color for color.
Cons:
Doesn't support illumination for 2004 Chevrolet.
Crutchfield response on Tuesday, August 27, 2013
Thanks for your review. We are correcting our presentation to show that this harness does not provide dimming for the car in question and other similar GM cars.

Installed in 2006 Isuzu I-350 with some soldering, and Heat Shrink Tubes. Zip tied beneath steering wheel under dash. Directions were simple to follow, and soldered ground to ground not connected to chassis as directed. Everything plugged in easily. The chime is way louder then factory chime. I bought it 1\2 off with Deck, still an added expense I was not expecting. Thank you GM for making as simple as installing an aftermarket radio more time consuming and expense.
Pros:
Easy Install and directions.
Cons:
Added Expense to GM Vehicles.

Metra VT-GMRC-01 Factory Integration Adapter

Written By BK, Nebr. on Saturday, August 10, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

NOT sure why I needed this....only bought it to keep Crutchfield support. I talked to many stereo shops and none of them could tell me exactly what I would lose if I didnt have it. I heard I'd lose warning chimes (no big deal to me) to losing stuff off the dash. Price was 50% off with stereo. I wish I looked at reviews before I installed it cause it is LOUD!!! I would have put tape over it to quite the thing down or cut a wire to lower volume.
Pros:
works as it should, easy to install, worked well with new stereo harness
Cons:
ITS LOUD, bigger than I thought it would be, cheaply made, a bit pricey but was 50% off with stereo

Chimes

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Much easier than I thought to install. Wiring diagram is good. Just remember not all wires will be used for all applications. Had to plug in chimes before able to listen to radio. Lesson learned.
Pros:
Easy to install. Good instructions. Especially if you do not like the loud chimes, instructions tell you how to lower the volume of the chimes. A plus, since chimes are loud.

this thing is ridiculously loud. Like wrap it in foam before you installs it loud. No kidding.
Pros:
Works great and easy to installs.
Cons:
Loud. you would have to hear it to believe it. Almost as loud as the low air alarm in big trucks. Kind of pricey too.

It resolved any required matching with my vehicle.
Pros:
Works fine, and the red wire is power, that can be tapped for min. power to operate a relay for acc. control, with my single din radio. Rated 2 Amp load.
Cons:
connecting wires to radio harness is only thing, for a person who might not be aware of this.

Metra VT-GMRC-01 Factory Integration Adapter

Written By Gregory H, Crimora, Va on Friday, June 28, 2013

I got this unit to replace a defective crux unit when I was installing a new Sony DVD in my 05 Chevrolet Colorado. Wiring it to the Sony harness was easy being its color coding matched the Sony's. The box is made to come apart so you can lower the chime volume by cutting on the circuit board. I did not do that. The problem is that the box will not stay together. I wrapped black tape around mine to hold it together and muffle the chime a little. Its very loud. Only Problem I see is that my radios dimmer don't work.
Pros:
Works fine.
Cons:
Chimes are very loud. Box is Cheesy, Radios dimmer don't work.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is pretty useful, though I would say absolutely necessary. basic plug and play ease of installation. I used one of these on a 2002 cavalier, which some one had taken the old radio out and cut the factory harness, making it challenging to install. Don't do that spend some money and just buy an adapter. Also people keep comenting about the volume has to settings, I used the low one works great for me.
Pros:
Effective and simple.
Cons:
Extra cost

This was necessary in order to install a new head unit in my chevy cavalier. The install was easy and I mounted the speaker under the dash near the windshield defroster vent. I see complaints that the speaker is too loud, but if you mount it under the dash is sounds normal.
Pros:
easy to install, color coded wires same as the head unit wires color code.
Cons:
finding a place to install the speaker may be difficult.

Excellent Product!

Written By Marty W, TN on Monday, March 25, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I used this product to install an AVH-P3400BH into my wife's Trailblazer. It was my first car audio install, and this product worked flawlesly. The great directions and color coordination with the reciever wiring was spot-on. The door ding sound is a little different tone from the factory one, but is not an issue. Sounds fine. This product is a must-have for the do-it-yourself installer. Couldn't be happier.
Pros:
Ease of use. Works perfectly
Cons:
Vehicle warning ding is not an exact match to the stock one, but does not bother me

Obnoxiously Loud

Written By Steve F., New Cumberland, PA on Sunday, March 17, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Purchased this to install a Pioneer FH-X700BT in a 2003 Silverado. Connecting the wiring was pretty simple. There was nowhere to mount the auxiliary speaker, so I ended up zip-tying it to a bracket inside the dash. My only gripe is that the volume is obnoxiously loud.
Pros:
Easily connected.
Cons:
Obnoxiously loud, nowhere to mount speaker.

nice to have those functions

Written By ChrisH, Dixon IL on Thursday, March 07, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Glad they put in a way to attenuate the volume, I used that option. It does not chime in exaclty the same way as the car originally did, but I am still glad I got it. It works fine, it is nice to have those functions.
Pros:
There was a way to attenuate the volume. It is good to have those functions.
Cons:
There wasn't really a good place under or behind my dash to put the thing. I wound up taping it to the backside of the front of the center console. It is out of sight there, but I suppose after some time, the electrical tape will get tired, and I will have to tape it back up or come up with another way to hold it up. Almost forgot; the box snaps together, and it would sometimes come apart.

Way to loud

Essential piece of equipment--no way around it. Had to cut solder wire to reduce volume because it was REALLY loud; instructions were very clear on how to make this modification--took 30 seconds and was easy. Bought with steering wheel control wiring harness which made entire install easy; all soldering and wire connections were outside of dashboard (on the work bench) and you just plug it into vehicle and head unit.
Pros:
Essential for safety
Cons:
None

Metra data bus has quality issues

Written By RonaldR, Fayetteville, GA on Sunday, October 28, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The first one of these I installed was defective (internally shorted). Metra tech support was less than helpful or courteous but they should have been. I had to argue with them to get them to admit that the data bus itself was the cause of the electrical short. Crutchfield was good about sending a replacement but the second one I received kept falling apart in my hands. It is way overpriced for such a poorly made device.
Cons:
poor quality, blows fuses, overpriced

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Thank you for suggesting that I was going to need it, I did. Well worth it.
Pros:
Cables are long enough. Loud speaker, they show you how to reduce loudness in documentation included. I wasn't aware that GM had the warning chimes coming from the OEM head unit Avoid having to splice OEM wires. Attached it with a couple of zipties next to steering wheel, under instrument panel (still loud =) )
Cons:
Only thing is that it is a little bulky, but length of wires make up for better placement Loud speaker, ***they show you how to reduce loudness in documentation included***
