Our take on the Axxess NIRD-01 Factory Integration Adapter

by Zak Billmeier

The NIRD-01 interface from Axxess lets you add an aftermarket receiver to your 2007-2008 Nissan Sentra or Maxima, while keeping the use of your Bluetooth features. You'll also retain the use of Nissan's driver information screen. This interface includes an adapter module, a keypad for accessing driver info, a flat panel insert, and all harnesses for attaching your new stereo. Warranty: 1 year.

Please enter your vehicle information or call an Advisor at 1-888-955-6000 to find out if this model is compatible with your vehicle.

Note: The control panel may not fit in some Nissan dash kits, but Axxess includes double-sided tape and over 5 feet of wire so you can easily mount it in a convenient spot in your Nissan.

Features

Overview: When installing an aftermarket radio into select Nissan vehicles, the Bluetooth features (if equipped) are lost. The driver information display is also lost, which is controlled by the factory radio. The Axxess NIRD-01 is designed for use in 2007-2008 Nissan Maxima and 2007-2008 Nissan Sentra vehicle to retain the factory Bluetooth features (if equipped) and information display. The NIRD-01 includes a hide-away interface module, a wired keypad, two keypad pocket inserts for Metra kits (only one will be used), and all the required interface-to vehicle installation harnesses.

Note: The Axxess NIRD-01 interface module is designed to work in conjunction with either the Metra 99-7421 or 99-7422 installation kits (sold separately).

Wired Keypad: The included wired keypad replaces the factory radio's controls (Up/Down, Trip Info, Clock Display) which operate the vehicle's factory driver information display. The included keypad pocket inserts allow you to mount the wired keypad in the dash, using a compatible Metra installation kit (sold separately).

Nissan Adapter

Written By Nelson, Raleigh ,nc on Monday, January 20, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This integration adapter worked good on my Nissan maxima, I like the fact that I get the car messages, information and Bluetooth. Some things are not accurate, but I like the fact that I keep the information messages etc.
Pros:
good vehicle integration,
Cons:
instructions were not very clear, the information display brighter that the rest of the car, some of the info is not accurate, DTE, miles per gallon, etc.

Inaccurate Readings

Written By Keith, Charleston, IL on Saturday, October 05, 2013

I bought this through and had it installed by a local dealer. I had high hopes for this product, and at first it appeared to work as advertised, but after a couple minutes of interstate driving it became clear it had a fatal flaw. The MPG and Distance Till Empty readings are horribly inaccurate. My 2008 Sentra is rated at an EPA estimate of 33MPG highway. I frequently get slightly more than that, usually 35, sometimes approaching 40 (if I have a tail wind). After I set cruise on my first trip with the NIRD-01, the Average MPG reading began to skyrocket past 33MPG at one point displaying over 140MPG AVERAGE! I thought that perhaps there was a break in period, so I continued monitoring it for a week. At it's best, the NIRD-01 was displaying 10MPG higher than what I was actually getting.

My advice, and this is what I am doing, is to find the radio trim for a lower trim level of the Sentra. Instead of a screen there is a little cubby. More cabin storage is far more useful than a screen that displays incorrect information. Put that money saved into a nice double din radio. If you want MPG and a bunch of other features, look into other options.
Pros:
Retains factory Bluetooth Retains Factory Clock
Cons:
Inaccurate MPG, Inaccurate DTE Does not retain thermostat

Glad to have it despite issues

Written By Dirkv, Fremont, CA on Monday, June 03, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Basically, this worked for what I wanted: To retain my clock, temperature, and 'left door open' type messages on the factory console. However I did have 2 problems with it: 1) The first night after I installed it, this unit sent a 'turn on' signal to my amplifier and in the morning my car battery was dead. Seems to be a known issue since I've seen other complaints about this online. I worked around this problem by not connecting it to the factory or head unit amp turn on (just wired the head unit directly to the amp). Doing this might affect bluetooth operation, not sure, but I don't use the bluetooth feature. 2) On rare occasion it may display a garbled display, but upon turning the car off and then back on, the problem clears. The second day I had it, it did this 3 times. But in the 4 months since then, it has only done it 2 times more. My conclusion is that maybe when my battery was still a bit weak on day 2 from problem #1 above, it caused this second problem to be more frequent (I'm thinking that lower voltage is a factor in triggering the problem). Despite the above issues, still happy because I really like to retain the factory display, and this is the only option to do that really. Considering the electrical complexity of cars nowdays, it's amazing we even have such an option.
Pros:
After getting through some initial troubles and frustration, works great.
Cons:
Has bugs that need to be fixed.

Works in 2009 Sentra

Written By DaleS, Winchester, VA on Thursday, February 10, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed this interface in a 2009 Sentra (eventhough it isn't listed as a supported year).
All of the cables and interfaces worked with no modificaitons. The unit works great and I
now have the information display working again in the car.

The actual interface box isn't very well constructed -- but given that it sits inside the dash
it isn't that big a deal. The push button control pad is nicely backlit and works well.
