Be the "lone star" of your block with Blaupunkt's navigation receiver

Blaupunkt's San Antonio 640 navigation receiver offers reliable guidance and plenty of entertainment options, including wireless Bluetooth® compatibility for hands-free calls and wireless audio streaming. And it presents a Texas-sized value in an increasingly crowded field of in-dash competitors, providing convenient control either through its gorgeous 6.2" touchscreen display or the included remote.

Road-ready GPS directions

Let the San Antonio 640 lead the way nearly anywhere — it comes with maps of all 50 states, Canada, Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico, and it'll point out the stops among its millions of points of interest. Lane guidance ensures you'll be in the correct position for your next turn, and you can see realistic views of many complicated intersections for easier navigation. Certain areas will be shown with 3D graphics for buildings, landmarks, elevated roads, and terrain so you can orient yourself more quickly.

This Blaupunkt incorporates historical traffic data to help determine the best route to your destination depending on the time of day, but it doesn't offer real-time traffic updates. You'll also hear turn-by-turn directions with street names said out loud, plus audible alerts when you're going over the speed limit.

Stay connected with Bluetooth

The San Antonio 640 offers Bluetooth connectivity to keep you connected to the world outside your vehicle through your smartphone. You'll be able to make and take calls using your compatible phone through the stereo. You can communicate through the stereo's built-in microphone, or use the included external microphone lets your callers hear you clearly in noisier vehicles. Built-in A2DP technology with SBC allows you to stream music from your smartphone through this receiver.

Entertain your eyes and ears

The video output let you send movies or other video content to external video monitors, so you can keep the whole crew happy when you're on a road trip.  You can use the 10-band equaliizer to shape your sound, or choose from one of the eight handy presets. The full complement of preamp outputs includes a dedicated subwoofer output with low-pass filter and level control.

Take charge of your sources

You can plug your iPod® or iPhone® into the front USB input and enjoy full control of your device's audio through the receiver. Or jack a satellte radio or other device into one of the two available audio/video inputs. If you're an Android™ phone user, you can control the music stored on your phone through the San Antonio 640 by engaging the Android Music Player app. CDs or DVDs are covered too — including discs loaded with MP3 or WMA files. And a dedicated input on the rear panel accommodates an optional rear-view camera to let you get in and out of tight spaces more easily.

Want to keep your steering wheel controls?

In most cars, you'll need an adapter to retain those controls with this car stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and radio, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. You'll see the adapters that work with your vehicle when you add this receiver to your cart.

Bluetooth note: Use of this receiver's Bluetooth features will depend upon your phone's Bluetooth capabilities. Learn more in our article explaining Bluetooth profiles.

iPod/smartphone note: If you're going to use your iPod or smartphone with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for compatibility information.

    Touchscreen & Remote Control

6.2" Touchscreen TFT Display: The Blaupunkt San Antonio 640 has an integrated 6.2" TFT widescreen display with touchscreen controls. The display provides a high-resolution video monitor for watching your DVD videos and viewing navigation maps. The screen has a resolution of 840 x 480 (RGB) and 1,152,000 total pixels. The unit's touchscreen panel features interactive controls making menu navigation easy. You can adjust the brightness level of the touchscreen monitor's backlight.

Note: To prevent the displaying of video while the vehicle is in motion, the unit's pink wire must be connected to the vehicle's parking brake detection circuit. Your vehicle will need to be stopped and have the parking brake fully engaged to view video. While the vehicle is in motion (parking brake off), you can still view all of the other displays and menus.

Hard-Key Controls: In addition to the unit's LCD touchscreen controls, the San Antonio 640 also features hard-key controls on the left edge of the screen (including a 3-way rotary audio control).

Start Up Time: The Blaupunkt San Antonio 640 has a start up time of approximately 33.1 seconds from off to the Map screen or 10.3 seconds from off to an AV source screen.

Remote Control: The San Antonio 640 navigation receiver includes an IR wireless remote control and features a SWC input for compatibility with factory steering wheel controls via a separate interface module (sold separately)

    • IR Remote: The San Antonio 640 comes supplied with an IR remote control for wireless operation of the navigation receiver.
    • SWC Input: The unit features a SWC (steering wheel control) input and is compatible with Steering Wheel Control Adapters from PAC (sold separately), so you can keep your vehicle's factory steering wheel radio controls. In order to connect a PAC SWC interface adapter to this unit you will need to setup the radio as a Sony receiver on the interface adapter.

2-DIN Chassis: The San Antonio 640 has a 2-DIN chassis (also known as Double DIN), and will fit in many vehicles with a large dash opening. The unit can be ISO-mounted using factory brackets, or Euro-mounted using the supplied mounting sleeve.

    Onboard Navigation

iGO Primo & TomTom Navigation: The Blaupunkt San Antonio 640 provides map coverage of the United States (all 50 states), Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, and Canada with millions of point-of-interests from TomTom; all loaded onto a pre-installed 4GB microSD-card. The San Antonio 640's integrated iGo Primo navigation software provides turn-by-turn visual and voice assistance to direct you to your selected destination. The built-in software quickly calculates step-by-step directions to any destination available on the included navigation map.

Note: Car navigation maps are frequently updated. While this database was judged to be as accurate as possible at the time of its release, a map database can never be 100% accurate. Road information that is maintained in the map databases, such as turn restrictions or road names may change over time.

GPS Receiver & Antenna: The Blaupunkt San Antonio 640 features a built-in GPS receiver and includes an external GPS antenna which determines vehicle speed and heading changes, along with longitude and latitude information, to accurately determine vehicle heading and position on the system's digital map. The GPSa antenna features a magnetic base and can be mounted inside or outside of the vehicle.

Note: The navigation receiver took approximately 21.3 seconds to calculate directions from Virginia to California. It only took 12.7 seconds to calculate directions from Virginia to Maryland. These tests were done inside the Crutchfield Lab of the Crutchfield Headquarters. Results will vary based on length of calculated route and your surrounding area.

On-Screen Map: The unit's on-screen map shows your vehicle's current position (a blue arrow by default), the recommended route (a blue line), the surrounding map area, and your destination as a checkered flag. The on-screen map shows streets, roads, and highways in a way that is similar to how a paper road map show them. A road's width and colors corresponds to their importance, so you can easily tell a freeway from a small street. When navigating a route, the top section of the map screen shows information about your next route maneuver and the next street or the next city/town. When approaching a turn, the map screen will zoom in and raise the view angle to let you easily recognize your maneuver at the next junction. If the next turn is at a distance, it will zoom out and lower the view angle to be flat so you can see the road in front of you. The map also displays data; such as the posted speed limit, your current speed, current time, distance to your destination, time left before you reach your destination, and your arrival time.

    • 2D/3D Map Mode: The Blaupunkt San Antonio 640 allows you to view its on-screen map in a 2D (two-dimensional) or 3D (three-dimensional) view. Similar to paper road maps, the 2D mode, shows you streets, roads, and elevation by color. In 3D mode, you can see the altitude and elevations differences. You can distinguish between valleys, mountains, and elevated roads. In selected cities 3D landmarks and 3D buildings are also displayed.
    • Color Mode: The navigation map screen uses different color themes (Day/Night) during the day and during the night for both the map and the menu screen. Daytime colors are similar to paper road maps, and the menus are bright. The nigh color themes use dark colors for large objects to keep the average brightness of the screen low. You can also set the navigation unit to switch between daytime and night color modes automatically based on the current time and GPS position.
Note: You can continue to listen to a selected source while viewing the on-screen navigation map.

Lane Information & Signposts: The Blaupunkt San Antonio 640's navigation map offers helpful lane information & signpost guidance.

    • Lane Information: When navigation on multilane roads, it is important to take the appropriate lane in order to follow the recommended route. If lane information is available in the map data, the map screen will display the lanes and their directions using small arrows at the bottom of the map. High lighted arrows represent the lanes you need to take.
    • Signposts: Where additional information is available, signposts substitute arrows. Signposts are displayed at the top of the map. The color and style of the signposts are similar to the real ones you can see above the road or by the roadside, They show the available destinations and the number of the road the lane leads to.
    • Junction View: If you are approaching a freeway exit or a complex intersection and the needed information exists, the map is replaced with a 3D view of the junction. The lanes you need to take are displayed with arrows. Signposts can also be present, if information is available.

Audible Alerts: The Blaupunkt San Antonio 640 offers various audible alerts and functions to help you get to your destination safely.

    • Voice Guidance (Text-to-Speech): In addition to graphic directions, the San Antonio 640 provides voice guidance and turn-by-turn directions with the announcement of street names. You can select from a variety of audible languages (including English, Spanish, and French). The volume of the voice prompts can be increased with increases in speed to overcome road noise. Voice guidance can be turned off if you prefer.
    • Safety Alert: This function can warn you when you approach road safety cameras, school zones, or railroad crossings (if available). You can also add your own alert points. Beeps or the spoken type of alert will be heard when you are approaching of these points.
    • Speed Limit Warning: Some maps may contain information about the speed limits of certain road segments. The San Antonio 640 provides an audible warning if you exceed the recommended speed limit.
Note: While navigating, other sources may be selected and listened to; such as AM/FM Tuner, CD, USB, iPod, & Bluetooth. The unit will mute the audio of the other source during navigation voice-prompts.

Historical Traffic: The San Antonio 640 features TomTom's Historical Traffic database of more than 9 trillion anonymously-collected data points, providing analysis to predict driving behavior along your route. You'll be able to determine the fastest route and accurate ETA at different times of the day. You'll also be able to analyze traffic congestion, travel times, and delays at different times of the day along your route.

Note: This is not a real-time traffic information system. This is only a collection of historical traffic data that has happened in the past that will further help the navigation system to give you the best route and most accurate ETA possible.

Destinations & Location: The Blaupunkt San Antonio 640 provides you with your location status, as well as offers you a variety of ways to search for a destination.

    • Where Am I?: This screen contains information about the current position (or approximately the last known position if GPS reception is not available) and a button to search for Car Repair, Health Agencies, Police, and Gas Stations around your area.
    • Find Destination: From the "Find" menu, you can select your destination by entering an address or selecting a place of interest, a location on the map or one of your Favorite destinations. You can also look up your recent destinations from Smart History, enter a coordinate, or use the location saved in a photo. iGO primo offers you several ways of choosing your destination:
      • Browse Map: Select a point on the map for your destination by touching the screen.
      • Address: Enter a full address or a part of an address; for example a street name without a house number or the names of two intersecting streets. Or enter ZIP code only; this way you do not need to select the name of the city and the search for street names might be faster as well.
      • POIs: Search millions of  POIs (points-of interest) by name, near you current location, along route, near your destination, or around a city.
      • Favorites: You can save your favorite addresses (like home & work) and POIs for quicker access the next time you are traveling.
      • History: The places that you have set as destinations in the past are automatically stored for easier access. Smart History suggests these previously used locations as destinations based on your navigation habits, using parameters like the current time of day, the day of week, and the current location.
      • Quick Search: Quick Search allows you to search addresses, Places, Favorite and recent destinations by name and keywords - all from one screen.
      • Coordinates: Allows you to search your destination by longitude and latitude values.

Note: All navigation functions can be accessed with or without the parking brake engaged.

Route Calculation: The Blaupunkt San Antonio 640 calculates your route based on your Vehicle Type, Route Method, and Avoidances.

    • Vehicle Type: You select what type of vehicle you are driving, so the navigation unit can determine the best route based on your vehicle type (Car, Truck, Emergency, Bus, or Taxi).
    • Route Method: You can choose which route method (Fastest, Shortest, Green, Economical, or Easy) the navigation unit should use when calculating your route.
      • Fastest: give a quick route, if you can travel at or near the speed limit on all roads. Usually the best section for fast and normal cars
      • Shortest: gives a route that has the smallest total distance of all possible routes. It can be practical for slow vehicles
      • Green: gives a quick, but full efficient route based on the fuel consumption data you provide
      • Easy: results in a route with fewer turns and no difficult maneuvers
    • Avoidances: You can tell the navigation unit to avoid certain types of roads along your calculated route, such as - Highways, Tolls, Carpool/HOV, Unpaved Roads, and/or Ferries.

Route Preview & Auto Route Recalculation: The navigation head unit lets you preview your route's turn-by-turn instructions and simulate travel along that projected route. The unit will automatically recalculate your route if you stray from the navigation unit's previously calculated route.

Trip Monitor: The Trip Monitor contains useful information about your trip. Trip logs can be saved manually when you reach your destination or automatically along your route. Trip log data includes - Start/End Time, Avg./Max. Speed, Total/Driving/Stopped Time, Total Distance, and Min./Max. Altitude.

Quick Menu: The Quick menu is a selection of controls and functions that are frequently needed during navigation; it can be opened directly from the Map screen. The content of the Quick Menu is fully customizable.

    Disc & USB Playback

Disc Compatibility: The Blaupunkt San Antonio 640 has a front-loading disc-slot to make loading your disc easier, because there is no panel to slide or fold-down. The San Antonio 640 supports playback of DVD-Video, DVD-R/RW, CD-Audio, and CD-R/RW discs; including MP3/WMA music files.

    • Off Eject w/ Auto Reload: You can eject a disc with the unit off. You cannot insert a disc with the unit off. If a disc is left in the ejected position for 10 seconds, the disc is automatically reloaded (only when unit is powered on).
    • Parental Control: Parental Control allows you to restrict DVD playback according to a predetermined level. You can select a parental control rating from 0-8, which is protected by a 4-digit password.

Front-Panel USB Port: The Blaupunkt San Antonio 640 features a front-panel USB (type-A) port that is hidden behind a flip-up cover. The USB port enables connection and control of a portable USB mass-storage class (MSC) device; such as select Android smartphones (Froyo/Gingerbread OS only) or USB thumbdrive. The USB port supports MP3/WMA music playback. USB portable audio devices that can be charged via USB will be charged when plugged into the navigation receiver's USB port (max. 0.5A), and the vehicle's ignition switch is set to ACC or On.

You can select Pandora stations from your station list and sort them by date or alphabetically. You can even shuffle songs from different stations in your list. You can also skip song tracks within a station. You can even give songs a thumbs up or thumbs down, plus bookmark songs or artists. An active Pandora account is required.

Note: Your iPhone will need an active Data Plan account with connection to the Internet via 3G, EDGE, LTE (4G), or WiFi. You will also need a Pandora music service account.

AM/FM Tuner (with US/Euro-Tuning): You can set the built-in AM/FM tuner between US standard and European tuning spacing. The Blaupunkt San Antonio 640's AM/FM tuner offers manual, seek/scan, & preset tuning.

    • Preset Tuning: The built-in tuner provides 3 FM banks and 2 AM banks. You can store 6 radio stations in each bank, giving you 18 FM and 12 AM preset stations. Stations can be preset manually or automatically.
    • Direct Tuning: You can enter a station's frequency directly from the head unit's touchscreen keypad (0-9).
    • Scanning: You can use the scan function to play all the receivable AM/FM stations of the current band for a few seconds.
    • Tuning Sensitivity: The seek tuning sensitivity decides whether the automatic station seek tuning finds only strong (local) stations or also weaker (distance) stations that may be noisy.
    Audio & AV Section

22 Watt x 4 Channel Amp: The Blaupunkt San Antonio 640 is equipped with a 22 watt RMS x 4 channel amplifier (50 watts Peak x 4 channels).

5CH/2V Preamp Outputs + LPF: The San Antonio 640 features front, rear and subwoofer 2.0-volt preamp outputs. The stereo front & rear speaker preamp outputs are balance and fade adjustable; the mono-subwoofer preamp output is non-fading. The receiver features a built-in Low Pass Filter control for the subwoofer preamp-output; you can select from 80Hz, 120Hz, or 160Hz.

EQ: The San Antonio 640's built-in equalizer offers 8 preset sound modes (Optimal, Classic, Rock, Jazz, Techno, Pop, Flat, or User) suitable for the music genre of your choice. The User mode allows you to manually adjust the head unit's 10-band EQ (31.25, 62.5, 125, 250, 500, 1k, 2k, 4k, 8k, 16k Hz) from -10 to +10 dB.

Source Level: You can increase the relative volume (+/-6dB) of the unit's source inputs to match the external source's output level. The Source Level can be used for the unit's Radio, Disc, USB, iPod, Bluetooth, or AV input.

Loudness & Dynamic Sound: The Loudness feature compensates for deficiencies in the low and high sound ranges at lower volume. Dynamic Sound enhances the bass even more, regardless of volume level.

Dual A/V Inputs: The navigation receiver is fitted with two audio/video inputs. The unit features a front-panel 3.5mm audio/video input for connecting an external game console or portable MP3 player. The head unit also features a composite video/stereo audio RCA input on the rear-panel for connecting an external A/V source, such as a Blu-ray player or mobile ATSC tuner.

Video Out: A single RCA composite video-output jack allows you to an add external monitor such as rear headrest monitor (sold separately). The video output will display whatever video signal that is being displayed on the head unit's touchscreen monitor.

Rear Camera Input: The unit features a composite video input for connecting an optional rear view camera (sold separately). The video from this connection can be set to display when switched to this input, or display the rear view camera video automatically when the vehicle is shifted into Reverse gear. The pink reverse wire must be connected to the vehicle's reverse lamp circuit for automatic video switching. Automatic video switching takes approximately 1 second.

Is there any way to turn off audio playback but still hear audio from the navigation system? There doesn't appear to be any way to turn off the radio, for example, other than switching to an audio source that isn't connected, which is cumbersome. You can mute everything by pushing the volume knob, but that also mutes navigation instructions.

    tim  Dec 21, 2016
    A
The easiest way is to connect your ipod directly to the USB port that is located on the front of the stereo unit. It is behind a small door on the lower left side of the unit.

    We use the Bluetooth function
    easter creek  Dec 16, 2016
    A
THE lower left corner of the face is a soft rubber cover that opens to reveal the usb input and a (supposedly) removable chip for updating the GPS (I think). connect the iPod there. If you are using an iPhone, connect with the Bluetooth, and play music directly through the bluetooth. If you connect your phone to charge, and start playing a podcast while bluetooth is also connected, you hear both, and the bluetooth is slightly delayed. Not good.

I Believe its for a traffic Monitoring Channel Provided by Some makes of vehicles. Possibly another Module is needed?
    william  Oct 19, 2016
    A
It`s called Traffic Message Channel (TMC) It is a technology for delivering traffic and travel information to motor vehicle drivers. It is digitally coded using the ALERT C protocol into RDS Type 8A groups[1] carried via conventional FM radio broadcasts. It can also be transmitted on Digital Audio Broadcasting or satellite radio. TMC allows silent delivery of dynamic information suitable for reproduction or display in the user's language without interrupting audio broadcast services. Both public and commercial services are operational in many countries. When data is integrated directly into a navigation system, traffic information can be used in the system's route calculation. Invention came from Germany and is used all over europe. Hope that helps a little to understand today's electronic opportunity.

I assume so since it has a camera icon on the display. I have not installed it yet but I plan to connect a backup camera too.

If you don't have the video going to another device will the DVD play on the main screen? And if so does it play while in motion or only while stopped?

When installed correctly, the parking brake must be engaged to watch a video on the main screen.

Abby, I don't have video going to another device and have played a DVD on the main screen. If the unit is hooked up correctly it will not play video when vehicle is in motion. The more I thought about that, the more I appreciated it... I surely would not want to be tempted with a video distraction while driving and end up hurting somebody.

Yes the DVD plays on the main screen but only if the vehicle is in park with the e-brake on.

Out of curiosity, does this unit have an internal fan for keeping it cool? Just wondering about overheating.

Not sure if there is a fan. I haven't heard one, and it doesn't reference one in the manual, but it does say that it has an Operating Temperature: -20C ~ 65C. I've had mine in a 1998 Honda Accord for two summers (NY City area), and have not had a problem. By far the best car radio I've ever owned, and the best / easiest GPS I've ever used. Highly recommend it.

I don't know if it has a fan, but I haven't had any problems with it, even over very hot summers.

As per the email I rec'd from Crutchfield - I have the Jensen VX7020 - I do not believe it has an internal fan - I have had the unit in a 2003 Acura TL & currently have it in a Ford Explorer - there have been no issues with overheating....if I can answer any other questions or concerns about te VX7020 please feel free to submit them...

This one updates though a memory card. You get a free update when you buy the unit. think its within 30 days from the first time its gps locates it when you turn it on the first time. From there you take the sd card out and plug it into a windows computer. doesn't support mac. You go to the website and log in a user account. Then it'll recognize it, then you'll have to download a toolbox app. Then it will have the updates. doesn't do real time alerts. And you have to pay for any future updates from time to time.

Remove compact flash from reciever front compartment then place in flash adapter supplied with the reciever and place in PC. Got to www.naviextras com and register. This will ask to install a program on your PC, once installed it should do the map software automatically. I made a backup first and found I had to remove some of the updates in order to have enough space to run the update.

So far I have not been able to get it to show the song information but it will stream the music. There is a dedicated Pandora setting, but little information is given in the manual on how to use it.
