Our take on the Bass Blockers

If you like it loud, protect your speakers from bass distortion and enjoy cleaner sound with Bass Blockers. Each Bass Blocker handles up to 50 watts RMS with a 6 dB per octave roll-off. You'll find some general guidelines below for matching Bass Blockers to speaker size. For smaller speakers (3-1/2"s, 4"x6"s, 4"s), the 600 Hz Bass Blockers work well with low-powered systems, while the 800 Hz Blockers are a better choice for high-power applications.

Speaker Size Cut-off Frequency

6-1/2", 5"x7"/6"x8" — 150 Hz
5", 5-1/4" — 300 Hz
3-1/2", 4", 4"x6" — 600 Hz (low power)
3-1/2", 4", 4"x6" — 800 Hz (high power)

These models come fitted with easy-to-use quick-slide connectors that make installation a cinch. There's no splicing or crimping — just slide one of the Bass Blocker's connectors onto your Crutchfield speaker harness and the other Bass Blocker connector onto your speaker's positive terminal.

Cut-off points are at 4 ohms. If you use 8-ohm speakers, the cut-off point is half the listed frequency.

Note: The .250 spade terminals on these Bass Blockers won't connect to the terminals on some car speakers. If your speakers use a different terminal, we recommend that you buy a 10-pack of female quick slides that you can splice onto the Bass Blockers.

Features

Overview: Bass Blockers stop speaker distortion caused by excessive bass relative to a speaker's bass output capability. They are especially useful with small diameter speakers and tweeters. Bass Blockers are typically installed right before the positive speaker input terminal, in-line with the positive speaker lead.

Easy Installation: To install a Bass Blocker, slip the female connector of the bass blocker onto the positive speaker terminal, and plug the male connector into the speaker lead. If you don't want to use the terminals, cut them off, cut the speaker lead at a convenient location close to the speaker, then splice the Bass Blocker into the positive speaker lead and insulate the connections. Bass blockers are not directional, so the orientation of the Bass Blockers on the positive speaker leads is not important.

Note: The .250" spade terminals on these Bass Blockers won't connect to the terminals on some car speakers and many speaker harness adapters (such as Metra speaker adapters). If your speakers or harness adapter use a different terminal, we recommend that you buy a 10-pack of female quick slides to splice on the Bass Blockers.

Slope: The roll off rate is 6dB/octave, and the frequency each bass blocker is rated for (i.e. 150, 300, 600, 800Hz, etc.) is the point where response has been lowered by 3dB.

Model 2 ohms 4 ohms 8 ohms Wire Color
127BB150A2 300Hz 150Hz 75Hz Brown
127BB300A2 600Hz 300Hz 150Hz Blue
127BB600A2 1200Hz 600Hz 300Hz Green
127BB800A2 1600Hz 800Hz 400Hz Yellow

Power Handling: Each Bass Blocker is capable of handling up to 50 watts RMS.

Work Great

Written By Albert, Mystic, CT on Tuesday, July 29, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Put these in my Jeep TJ when installing a 12" Subwoofer. I upgraded the factory speakers but they are still small 3" and 5" speakers unable to carry any real bass. The Bass Blockers made it easy to cut the low end out of the jeep speakers and run it all through the Sub. I just wanted an inexpensive and easy way to set up the system and this worked great.
Pros:
Easy to install and does exactly as advertised.
Cons:
I bought the female connectors as recommended but ended up needing male connectors also. Ended up having to run to the store anyway to get the right connections.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Worked exactly as advertised and inexpensive. Did a very good job cleaning up the bass distortion in my 3.5" Kicker CS series dash speakers.
Cons:
The spade terminals provided are larger than those found on most spealers so you'll either have to modify them by cutting them a little narrower (as I did) or just replace them with proper sized spades.

600hz bass blockers

Written By F-Eight, Lancaster, CA on Saturday, May 03, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After installing Kicker 6x9 speakers front and rear I put 3.5 inch Kickers in the dash. The dash speakers over powered the front door speakers. Installing the 600hz bass blockers did the trick. Now the bass is back where it belongs with mids and highs in the dash for a nice sound field.
Pros:
Easy install.
Cons:
None.

150 hz Bass Blockers

Written By Mdlbldrnt, Sioux Falls SD on Sunday, April 06, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I had never heard of bass blockers. I went to Crutchfield with questions about trim plates. They could not help me with that issue however, after a brief description of what I had and what I was trying to do I purchased bass blockers in the 150hz frequency range. I installed these along with a sound ordinance bass amplifier and the combination is perfect. I have to assume these little units are keeping my new 2 way speakers from damage. The speakers sound great and were easy to install in the positive speaker wire.
Pros:
Small, easy to install, complete with spade lug style ends.
Cons:
none

I had speaker distortion when I played bass heavy music. I spoke with a Crutchfield employee and he told me about bass blockers. He told me to go for the 300 hz because of my speaker size. For the money this is a fantastic option to help eliminate speaker distortion. Thanks Crutchfield!

Didn't use as the terminals were not compatible with the wiring harness adapters supplied with the speaker purchase so I don't know if the perform as advertised or not.
Pros:
- Don't have any
Cons:
- Terminal ends don't work with the wiring harness supplied with the speakers.
Crutchfield response on Monday, March 24, 2014
Sometimes the spade terminals on these Bass Blockers won't fit your speakers. In these cases, you'll need to clip off the spade and attach the proper-sized quick slides. Our tech support team reached out to the customer to help with this issue.

Not Sufficient Blockage for Tweeters

Written By Alex, Clifton, VA on Sunday, February 16, 2014

I'm disappointed with these blockers only because they were recommended for my tweeters but I don't think they cut out enough low frequency.
Pros:
Bi directional blockers which is nice.
Cons:
Not cutting out enough mids from my tweeters. I guess Crutchfield doesn't carry a blocker that blocks at higher frequencies. Will have to return them.

first off, these are awesome products. i have it on my 3.5" jl coaxials. testing these with sine wave tones, they do not cut off all the frequencies, however, listening to music is another story. they do the job great. highly recommended for anyone with small diameter speakers
Pros:
clean mids/highs prevents small speakers from clipping from bass they cannot handle
Cons:
sine waves still come through, and cranking near max on music they start to not work as great.

Written By Adam, Nashville, TN on Sunday, December 08, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I recently installed a stereo in my classic car, but was disappointed to find that if I set the bass level to a good level for the rear 6x9s, the front 6.5s would distort periodically. After the installation of the Bass Blockers (which was very quick and easy), I can set the bass for the rear 6x9s without any of the distorting of the front speakers. Now I can cruise and listen to all of the Motown, blues, and classic rock that I want!
Pros:
Work as described. Extremely easy to install. Great price.
Cons:
None that I can think of.

Not for every Car

Written By Whitt VT, Statesboro, GA on Sunday, November 17, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The blockers look sturdy and super easy to install, I just wish I could've used them. The tweeter connection in a Prius II is apparently hardwired from the connection clip, with no way to use an adaptor or such to attach the blockers. All in all, you can't use them with stock tweeters in a Prius II.
Pros:
Sturdy, easy connection
Cons:
Doesn't fit every car

4x6 bass blockers

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Get's the job done, I have these installed on two 4x6 speakers and it really cleaned up the sound, no bass distortion equals a happy customer, if amplifying your speakers isn't in your plans these should be!
Pros:
Cleans up the sound for a huge reduction in distortion
Cons:
Terminal connectors aren't compatible with certain speakers therefore a pack of multiple sized terminals are suggested, only adds a few dollars though

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I had never used anything like these before. Figured it was worth a try before deciding whether to spend a bunch of money on an amp or upgraded head unit. Still might do that, but for now my front (new, Polk DB651S) speakers aren't trying to put out bass, making them much clearer. Bass in the 2000 Tundra is a little muddy coming from the rear (same Polk speakers) but I can tell there's bass, which I couldn't before.

Cons:

Stopped by the Crutchfield store, but they didn't have them in stock. Went home and ordered them online and had them at my door the next day. I needed them for my Infinity Kappa dash speakers. Being 2 ohm speakers, these bass blockers are effectively 600 Hz blockers, which is what I wanted. They;re of high quality and do the job.

Great except for one thing

Written By SandroD, Upstate, NY on Saturday, December 15, 2012

I used this with a set of Focal Polyglass speakers in a Scion IQ. It was pain to install because the male connector would not fit into the wire harness provided by Crutchfield. It is just a little too big. I remember doing a similar install years ago and i ran into the same problem. I ended up having to splice the wires together. The end result is amazing. It definitely allowed my speakers to shine with its mids and highs. I would have given it 5 stars if i didn't have to alter the wires.
Pros:
It works as expected
Cons:
Does not fit on the provided wire harness. Alteration is necessary.

Must have for aftermarket systems including subs.

Written By Sergio W, Colorado Springs, CO on Friday, December 14, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Just got these in today and I must say they are amazing! For being a cheap passive crossover solution, these really help those who want more out of their aftermarket speakers complimented with a subwoofer system. I was able to turn up the bass setting higher to send more bass to the sub whilst keeping harmful bass frequencies from my speakers. The 150 hz cut-off is perfect because a good amount of bass the speaker can handle at loud volumes are still being played through the full range speakers. Now I can really turn the volume up without distortion from unproper bass being fed to the full range speakers. The difference is almost unreal. Hard to explain in words, but "Music Heaven" has been reached in my car. :P Highly recommend these for anyone with a subwoofer system in their car, or anyone with aftermarket speakers, or a combination of both.
Pros:
Cheap, Makes a world of a better audio difference, Lets full-range speakers handle frequencies they can handle at louder volumes for cleaner, crisper, distortion free(in some cases), rich sound. Easy to install.
Cons:
Male slide terminal didnt fit my current female terminal, but not a problem since splicing a wire is very easy.

My Pioneer Deck didn't have the High Pass Filter feature, so I bought 2 pairs of these bad boys. They eliminated the low frequency on the front and rear speakers which is exactly what I wanted. I let my Sub take care of the Low Frequencies while the main speakers bring out the Mids and Highs with no distortion. Sounds really clean now.
Pros:
Easy Install and they work very well.

I have a Ford Explorer with NAV and Video from the factory so I want to keep my head unit and I'm not in the frame of mind to install an amp. at the moment, so the base blockers worked magic on my front Boston Acoustic 5-1/4 components.

The head unit has limited bass control and it was not filtering out low bass and even the Boston's can only handle so much before sounding like total s*#@. I tried the 300HZ as indicated but it took to much bass out so i landed with the 150HZ. They sound great, clear upper and midrange with to proper amount of lows. Two complaints:

1. The quick connectors are too wide (they don't fit) and you need to modify

2. The base blockers don't have any marking on them so if you get two types don't mix them up as it's hard to tell the difference. Yeah the wire color different but if you forget what was what you need to perform a sound check to figure it out.

They work, but...

Written By Malcolm, Atlanta on Thursday, June 16, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Once installed they work fine, but getting them in was a process even though it should be simple. 1st, as others mentioned the terminals don't fit a lot of speakers. In our vehicle we have 3 sets of speakers all different brands and the terminals didn't fit any so all had to be modified.

2nd, the solder joint between the wire and the component can be weak. On 1 of them i was installing both sides popped of as i flexed the wires to install the speaker so I had to take it out and re-solder.

They do just what they say. Only issue is the spade terminals are to large for todays speakers. Not a big problem, just cut em off and splice them into your pos speaker wire.

These definitely do their job and work as described, however, I didnt care for
them. I used them on Infinity Kappa series 682.9cf 6x8's and ended up taking
them off after 2 days.
So even though they work, I cant give them 5 stars because I didnt like the
result. I felt the 300hz cutoff was too high for those particular speakers.

Speaker terminal too large for Boston Acoustics postive speaker terminal. You
have to splice in the terminal that comes with the speakers.

Awesome Product

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This product is awesome for someone looking to get better highs from your
smaller speakers without having to spend the money for an amp. I have these
installed in my dash and sound bar speakers in my Jeep Wrangler. I didn't
know how they would work at first, but I must say that this has been the BEST
$10 I have spent on sound equipment. They take out the bass to give you
crystal clear results and let the subwoofer do all the heavy hitting with the bass.
I highly recommend these Bass Blockers to anyone that wants to let your radio
push your smaller speakers!!!

Simply as advertised!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These are a very effective and affordable passive crossover method. They basically convert your full range speaker to Mid - High range sound output. This prevents smaller speakers from distorting or squashing out when trying to re-create big bass at higher volume.

The only draw back is they are not flexable as far as what cut -off feequency they pass so choose your cut off frequency carefully. If your not certain which is best for your aplication, the general selection guide on the web site is probably your best bet.

These bass blockers are probably the best investment Ive made for my audio system. I was very, very suprised when I heard the quality of sound that came from installing this product. It took me a total of 10 minutes to install these Bass Blockers, too! Now all my lows go to my subwoofers and my 6x9's do the rest. These worked so well that im thinking about purchasing another pair for my door speakers.

Solid Product, Noticeable Difference

Written By Pat, Dingmans Ferry, PA on Sunday, June 28, 2009

These bass blockers worked just as all the previous reviews about them said they would. For the extra money with my Kenwood Speakers, it was definitely worth the investment. Installation is easy with these. I was able to turn the volume up a good amount louder without the bass starting to sound bad. These are supposed to help the speakers to last longer also which is another bonus feature about them. I would definitely recommend these to anyone looking into buying a set of good speakers.

I HAVE A 2005 DODGE RAM 1500 QUAD CAB. I HAVE A PAIR OF 3 1/2" INFINITY SPEAKERS IN MY DASH. BEFORE I INSTALLED THESE, EVERY TIME I TURNED UP THE MUSIC TO CERTAIN LEVELS THEY WOULD POP AND DISTORT. NOW AFTER I INSTALLED THESE MY SOUND IS CRYSTAL CLEAR AT ANY LEVEL AND I RECEIVED AN ADDED BONUS. NO DISTORTION. THIS IS A SMALL PRICE TO PAY FOR THE BENEFITS YOU RECEIVE.

Cheap Insurance

I installed 600Hz blockers on my 3.5" Boston Acoustic dashboard speakers. At low volumes, the 3.5" speakers didn't make any bass anyway so they aren't that noticeable. But at higher volumes, you can notice that all your bass is coming from behind you. The speakers get VERY loud and don't distort when they aren't trying to produce low frequencies. I highly recommend blockers for smaller speaker sizes. You won't have to worry about blowing your speakers when you're driving with your windows down on a highway anymore!

Noticable difference

Written By Robert, Manteca, CA on Tuesday, August 19, 2008

I purchased these for my 05 mustang. I had replaced the factory speakers
in the doors and back deck with pioneers. The base was pretty heavy. I
bought two of the 150 mhz base blockers and added them to my door
speakers and wow what a difference. The door speakers are much clearer
now and i can hear the distinct sound difference. I left the rear deck
speakers alone. So with the two 10" subs in the doors plus the back deck
speakers i still get all the clear base i want but now will clearer crisper mids
and high tones from the base blocked door speakers. The difference was
night and day.

Excellent Bass Blockers

I have a reg. cab Silverado with an Alpine 9886, 2 infinity 6.5's in the doors & 2 infinity 4x6's in the panels behind your head. Too much bass was getting to my 4x6's and I was scared to blow my new speakers. Saw these 600Hz, and had to pick them up. They worked perfectly & were easy to install in line with the speakers. Sound is crisp & clear w/out any distortion! Now I can bump my music loud without worying. Definately installing them on the 6.5's ASAP when I install my 12"!!

Bass Blockers

Written By Aaron, Las Vegas, NV on Thursday, June 12, 2008
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought the 600 Hz version when I replaced the oem speakers in my car. I
run a low power system with a basic Kenwood receiver.

When I installed these, I noticed a substantial decrease in the volume of
the front speakers, which I fixed just by balancing the sound more to the
front of the car. The quality of sound did not improve at all, but I left the
set up just for the sake of protecting my new speakers from too much bass.

A short time later I noticed that my front speakers were not making any
sound at all. I found that the bass blocker had fried itself. The connection
basically melted away. Now my speakers work fine and sound much better
just by removing the bass blocker.

These bass blockers are well worth the money. After I installed these, my
speakers were a lot louder, and the crisp notes were more noticeable. I
would recommend these to everyone even if they don't have a subwoofer.
Since most 6 1/2 speakers do not produce bass anyways, why not block it
out? If you purchase these bass blockers you will not be disappointed.

After installing the Bass Blockers on my front side door speakers, the bass coming from my rear 6x9s was much more noticeable. In addition the front speakers sound much more clear and crisp without the lows being pushed through them. The Bass Blockers made a big improvement in the quality of the sound coming from my car. This was money well spent!

These will help you reach crystal clear mids and highs with 6.5's

Written By t_quirk, Detroit, MI on Saturday, May 12, 2007
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Even if you are just powering with a head unit these will make a difference. They filter out low bass, therefore drastically cutting distortion to speakers not meant to carry heavy bass. The bass in my car comes from my rear 6x9's. Mids and highs should come from the front since it's easier for the ear to locate mids and highs. I am now able to fade my system to the front, ensuring mids and highs come through *without* the bass that would normally distort them. A great buy, I highly recommend them!

Incredible Difference!

Written By jrhythm03, Stow, OH on Wednesday, December 13, 2006

I'm currently using two pairs of these: 150's and 600's. At first I was skeptical on actually needing these. Putting them in made all the difference. I've been installing systems for several years now as a hobbyist, and these blockers push the cleanest, most efficient sound I've ever heard through my after-market speakers. If you have a small car and subs in the trunk... GET THESE. You'll finally have something to rival the rattle. It's completely worth it to tack these on when you're buying replacements. I put these in after already having installed my speakers, so it was a bit of a pain to get to everything again, but it was definitely worth it. No question. Just be sure your head unit isn't trying to push more than 50w/ch.

Great stuff!

Written By cobra, Philly, PA on Monday, November 07, 2005

I have a truck (86 F150) with a high power (50x4) head unit, 2 6.5 door speaker and a custom 2x10 enclosure with it's own amp that just didn't sound right. The door speakers kept breaking up. I added these 150hz bass blockers and it totally transformed the sound. If you're using your head unit to drive speakers and you have a sub I would get these in an instant. It will really clean up your sound. Only complaint is that I would want them at about 100hz not 150hz. My Subs aren't good for much over 130hz so there's a tiny hole, but not real bad.

I have a set of Kicker 3.5" speakers an I want to eliminate the bass from them. Which frequency of bass blocker is recommended? I just want the highs to come through. Thx [ Kevin  Jun 22, 2014 ]

  • the 800s will do fine but if you have a hi pass crossover built in your amp or radio use it to as well [ THEODORE   Jun 28, 2014 ]
  • The 800hz blockers will work fine. I don't know about the Kickers, but check before you buy the blockers because some smaller diameter speakers come with blockers already installed at the factory so buying another set isn't required. [ JOHN   Jun 23, 2014 ]
  • I used the 800hz and they sound good but honestly, if you're using an aftermarket head unit then you can probably get away with the 600. Just a thought. [ OCTAVIO   Jun 23, 2014 ]
Would these bass blockers be ideal for my alpine type R tweeters who's frequency range is from 1000 hz to 22000 hz? [ Jorge  Apr 18, 2014 ]

  • They will work fine, just be sure that they don't already come with bass blockers (some speakers do). Also, if you're using a crossover network, bass blockers aren't necessary, because the crossover handles that chore. [ JOHN   Apr 19, 2014 ]

  • We have not received any answers from other customers on your question. I would recommend reaching out to an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. They should be able to help answer your question. [ Jeff Staff  Feb 05, 2014 ]
Would this cut-off frequency be ideal for tweeters? I don't want ANY mids or lows coming from them, only highs. Also, wondering if I really need them if I'm going to run them off my head unit. Can't I simply adjust the high pass crossover frequency in the deck and skip bass blockers? I've had a set of bass blockers in a previous system and they worked awesome! But I don't recall what frequency I chose back then. My current head unit is a Kenwood KDC-355U and my tweeters are Pioneer TS-1110's (chose Pioneers over Kenwoods for their higher frequency response). Any advice would be much appreciated. Thank you. [ Kenwood Freak  Dec 21, 2013 ]
6 answers
  • I used them on my tweeters and they work well. I have no amps or anything simply the head unit and I get a great sound. [ JOEL   Dec 30, 2013 ]
  • Bass blockers are used to prevent the lowest frequencies from going thru tweeters. Because tweeters reproduce the high-end sounds in the frequency spectrum, trying to get them to reproduce bass level sounds could damage them and the sound will be distorted. I think you are confusing the equalization curves in your deck with a cross over network which must be installed in the speaker line from a separate amp. (You don;t say whether you're using a separate amp or not). Frequencies above 800hz are still considered "mids" so the bass blockers won;t stop the tweeters from receiving those frequencies but they will prevent distortion and damage to the tweeters. If you are using component speakers (woofers, mid range and tweeters and again, you didn't say), they should have a cross over network installed which should correctly separate the frequencies to match the capabilities of that particular brand of speaker so the bass blockers wouldn't be necessary. [ JOHN   Dec 22, 2013 ]
  • Get the highest number... [ RANDY   Dec 22, 2013 ]
  • I'm running them on the 3.5 inch polk audio speakes but I have 6x9 in my doors so I also wanted to block out any lows. I was also trying to limit the distortion . [ MARK L   Dec 22, 2013 ]
  • It was the best ting I did for my tweeds. They are ear piercing highs now. The cross over on my punch amps was still letting some mids through. For the price it is worth it. [ RANDY   Dec 22, 2013 ]
  • I picked up a set of polk audio silk dome tweeters to put in my dash, and i used these bass blockers in the wiring. They've been in for around 4 mnths, and seem to be doing tye job pretty well. Hope that helps. [ JOSHUA   Dec 21, 2013 ]
