Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Install was a breeze with this, only issue was finding the 1 power supply (red cable).

Pros: Fairly easy install for my 2003 VW GTI. Helps keep the wiring stock instead of having to cut the factory harness.

Cons: Took a bit of time to get cables out of the way in the back, and had to remove plastic casing without cutting the red (12v+) cable that comes from the actual C2R-VW2 interface adapter, instead of like all the rest of the cables that are ready to be stripped at end and just wired together. Instruction sheet covers this but its not exactly easy to find the quick answer without looking at the details.

The harness worked well and there were only a couple of connection issues that I had to sort out between the in-dash CD/radio and the harness as documentation did not quite line up - luckily, Crutchfield tech support was very helpful in answering these questions in a friendly and professional manor.

Pros: Did exactly what it needed to do

Cons: Non really

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This unit decodes the CAN bus information in your VW/Audi so your radio power works just as it did with the factory radio. Using it also nicely simplifies installation. The supplied "documentation" sheet is nearly sufficient, brief as it is. The supplied connector to mimic the factory radio is large, so during install you will need to find space for it that may or may not be simple, depending on the car.

Pros: Functionality with power behavior, ease of installation, most of documentation and packaging.

Cons: Reference to "navigation" in document and cable bundling, when there may or may not be any navigation system around. Also did not route the MUTE signal from car radio side to car, even though lines present on each side.

Must have for easy installation

will from PA on 1/12/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This was a must have for installation in my 02 Jetta TDI with factory monsoon. It eliminates any concerns about batteries draining, K wires, factory pre-amp concerns, etc. I have been running it for a few weeks now and have had zero problems. There was only a small amount of head scratching with the wiring and the crutchfield tech answered my questions easily. My conversion was from a double-din factory Monsoon to a single din Kenwood. I tried every which way to squeeze the wiring harness behind the reciever without monification to car, but just couldn't make it work. I ended up ripping out (literally) the plastic piece in the back that normally supports the back of fatory stereo. All that said, it has nothing to do with the PAC C2R-VW2 - it is a Jetta issue. All-in-all I'm super happy.

Pros: Easy, hassle free!

Cons: Unless you want to have a huge multi-day wiring project you have to have it.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've read a number of reviews here where people were questioning why you need this wiring adapter. If you don't mind cutting into the factory harness, and your head-unit doesn't need to know when you have selected reverse, and you don't want to integrate your steering wheel controls then you don't need this adapter. However, if you want a quick 10 minute installation that doesn't require you to cut or splice existing wiring, and you have a backup camera, or steering wheel controls then you really should buy this VW specific adapter with it's CAN-BUS interface. I also read a number of comments that complained about the lack of instructions, and wanted to let any prospective buyers know that it's actually very easy to use. Take the one page of instructions that come with this unit, plus the instructions that come with your head-unit. If you look at the head-unit instructions it will show the wiring color codes for all the speaker outputs, so simply connect those wires from the head-unit adapter to this adapter. In my case the backup sensor wire from the head-unit was a different color from the wire in this adapter, so you really should double check to see if there are any exceptions, but generally it's like-color from the head-unit to like-color on this adapter. Once you have finished, wrap all the wire connectors in electrical tape of shrink-wrap and simply plug it in to the factory connector.

Pros: Easy to setup Very reasonable price when on sale :-)

Cons: Expensive when it's NOT on sale :-)

Steering wheel control interface for 02 VW Passat. Install was pretty simple - plus into the aftermarket harness, and wire together one wire, if I recall correctly. Programming is simple, but something isn't functioning properly. For some reason, I was able to program volume up and down, but not the track up and down buttons. Not too big a deal for me because the volume buttons are what I care about.

High Priced unit to adapt factory to new radio.

Knymc from Lufkin, Tx on 3/3/2013

Definitely agree with other reviews. The only reason I needed this was for the Can interface and to prevent me from cutting factory harness. Used to install a new JVC double din radio in my sons 04 VW Jetta at first look I was overcome by all the wiring and different connectors. Reading the instructions that came with it several times while reviewing the wires on it vs the wires for the new radio, it finally started making sense to me. Since his car did not have navigation or steering wheel control, basically these connectors went un used. So the rest was straight forward for just speaker and power, except finding the red wire for the ACC when key is in ACC position. Few more mins of scratching my head and reading, figured it out. All in all not bad, but can be confusing. I basically used the main connector for speakers ground and power, one for the VW can bus (blue box) , then the ACC wire. Did the soldering in the house with harness from new radio. Hooked it up in the car with radio in my lap and tested. All worked fine. Can dim radio though from cars dimmer knob, but son didn't care. All in all, taking my time, was able to remove old radio and install new one in exactly 2 hours. And it worked.

Pros: Works fine, no issues.

Cons: Instructions not clear, takes reading several times to figure it out and what it is showing you to do with it.

It does what it should

LukeS from Westfield, PA on 3/1/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I needed this unit for my 03 GLI VR6 w/ Monsoon stereo system. Crutchfield was very good at helping me get it quickly at the last minute. This unit is outrageously priced, as it is essentially a wiring harness with the addition of a blue circuit box with a little glowing light. I know these are required for new vehicles, to provide extra power and link to the vehicle's computer, but it's still a cheap chinese product priced way too high. Nevertheless, it does what it's supposed to, but I have found that there is no "dimmer" wire for use with some touchscreen stereos. When I turn on my headlights, it does not dim the screen any like it does in an almost identical 01 Jetta which uses a basic wiring harness. This does not bother me any, but I figured it was worth mentioning.

Pros: Works as it should Half price with new stereo

Cons: Price Lack of extra wires that may be needed

Does what it is supposed to

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am really not sure why people have rated this poorly. It is a wiring harness, just like many others that I have used. The only real difference is that this one includes the necessary CAN BUS adapter to make it work right with the VW. All of the wires are clearly marked and labled. You basically hook up the color coded wires from the harness to the color coded wires from the reciever that you are installing, plug it all in and go. I found the instructions clear and easy to follow.

Pros: Clear instructions Easy to install

Cons: NONE

Used it because Crutchfield said that I needed it, however I have a basic install no extras such as steering wheel controls or navigation. Would have been great if I was able to get the adapter cable like Crutchfield use to send out for free.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

'08 VW Jetta. Simple to connect speaker wires to speaker wires, but you have to use the nav wires for auto dimmer and some other stuff, so not exactly explained in the docs. I doubt it would have been this easy if not for this harness, but still - a bit of a dogs breakfast for something that should be plug and play.

Pros:

Cons:

Not "plug and play" but does work as advertised.

2008 Volkswagen Jetta
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed on a 2008 Jetta with a JVC unit, Sound Ordinance sub, and a Pyle back-up camera. I agree with a lot of the reviewers - some of the labeling, specifically the "navigation" bundle, misleading. With a little time, study and effort, sorted it all out and then smooth install from there. It would be impossible, in my opinion,to do an aftermarket installation without it.

Pros: It works.

Cons:

really, you couldn't wire it at the factory?

NJ from danbury ct on 11/13/2012

2003 Volkswagen Jetta
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

for a harness design to my year/make/model it needs a lot of work!!! the harness is in 2 halves, YOU have to solder the connections!!! and it's just green to green, purple to purple. it's speakers-they are pretty standard and the factory couldn't just run an intact wire? Next, the wiring diagram does NOT give you proper instructions for the power wires! it shows both as B+ which would leave the unit on at all times! finally, the harness was built incorrectly, the red wire, which is always the main power, is now the trigger/ignition wire, and the yellow-usually the trigger/ignition wire is actually the main power. and on a VW, there IS no true ignition wire! you have to test the other plugs (for the navigation system, steering wheel controls, amp) for a proper output from the CAN part of the harness. for the money these cost, i expect it to be prewired, and CORRECTLY. IF you know automotive electrical and are good with a multimeter, it's no problem, especially if you know it's FUBARed. if you expect plug and play? hahahahahahah...good luck!

Pros: at least it properly connects and locks into the stock harness

Cons: everything else! incorrectly built, incorrect instructions, improper setup, expensive...

The product works perfect when you actually know what it is. I decided to install the unit myself and everything was alright until I got to the part where I had to use the interphase. I looked at this product and only thought it had the blue part (the only part actually made visible). The real can bus was completely hidden with the packaging and I thought I didn't have it and ended up cutting my cars factory wiring. I called Crutchfield about matching the wires and they swiftly told me i already had the click-on product. I still ended up destroying factory wiring on my car. not very happy at this point but change the packaging Crutchfield!!!!!!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My 2003 Jetta has the VW Monsoon system which includes a separate amp. I originally purchased this unit thinking it kept the steering wheel controls. It does not. You need to purchase an additional PAC unit (which plugs into this unit harness). This unit integrates the new head unit to the Monsoon amplifier and uses all of the existing speaker wiring, etc. makes the new head unit install VERY EASY!!! Literally plug & play! Only have to work at the readio location. No other work/wiring required! Makes swapping the head unit super easy. Using the existing amp sounds pretty good too.

Pros: SUPER EASY INSTALL! Plug & play head unit replacement.

Cons: Have to add the additional PAC steering wheel control modual.

Only four stars because it this wiring adapter is just bundled so awkwardly! It was very difficult to fit all of this wiring + plastic box behind the radio.

Pros: -Works great -Most/all wire colors matched up with stereo adapter

Cons: -Bulky wire bundling made tucking the harness difficult behind the radio. -No splice connectors? Some cap splices would have been nice.

Not much to say except this was so easy to hook up and plug in , that even a novice could do it no problem . Just be sure to read everything included in the instructions and you'll be fine . I elected to solder all joints and use heat shrink sleeves , so as never to worry about anything shorting out under my dash . Just a safe way to do this imho . Just match the color coded wires to the ones on your factory plug . It's that simple .

Pros: It all worked as advertised from the moment i turned the key on after the installation was completed . As it should be !

Cons: None .

Pros: All the wire colors matched the radio harness, worked as advertised.

Cons: Directions were a bit skimpy, and the label 'navigation wires' on the harness was misleading - they were the wires you needed for accessory, reverse, parking brake. Minor complaint really.

I would give this a 5th star, but, like a number of others, I called tech support to ensure the correct connections for my situation. I installed a Kenwood KDC-X696 and found a couple of minor differences when matching wires. A two minute call to tech support cleared it right up: Kenwood red wire to the C2R Navigation bundle red and the Kenwood Blue w/white stripe (P.CONT) to the C2R blue. Other than that, 15 minutes to solder and shrink wrap the connections and to the car I went. Once connected, everything worked perfectly! I don't know if the Kenwood wiring matches most other head units, but if this is the case, it would seem that PAC could update their instructions accordingly.

Pros: Slick interface to make everything "Plug and Play" in the car

Cons:

It plugged right in to wiring harness, except for the power. I had to run and additional wire over to my fuse box, so my stereo does not stay on until I open my door when the key is turned off, like factory unit did. And if there IS a way, your instructions certainly don't make that clear. You would think after paying this much for a custom adaptor, it would hook right up and match your cars factory unit. The instructions that came with stereo were more useful than the instructions that came with the harness.

Pros: All the speakers work

Cons: Too expensive! Functionality of new stereo does not match factory unit.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Makes for seamless install for a VW with CAN bus. It's a little pricey, but other units with a good rep. are about the same. Installing a new head unit in a CAN bus Volkswagen without a CAN bus adapter is a PAIN, don't make yourself go through the trouble. Yes, you can get cheaper, but not by much.

Pros: Plug and play with VW harness, after you solder all the connections with the radio head unit wiring. No cutting of the VW harness or wiring, a big plus.

Cons: Even at the discount rate of 50% off, this adapter is about 10 to 20 bucks more than I think it should be, but then I get Crutchfield support on the install, so it's probably a wash.

Cons: One of the wires wasn't the same color as the wire on the new deck, but still easy to figure out.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Totally useless. Plugs did not match.

Pros:

Cons: It did not fit my 2003 Jetta. The plugs were not the same. The only other thing this adaptor does is interface the steering wheel radio controls, which my car does not have. I cut the plugs off the car harness and connected my new radio with wire nuts. Works great. I'm returning the adaptor.

Horrible instructions

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The instructions that came with the unit were horrible. Some of the wire colors didn't match on installation sheet. I had to call Crutchfield for support and they said everyone who purchases this product calls in. PAC needs to update their instructions. Thank goodness for Crutchfield support

2007 Volkswagen Passat
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I got this adapter to work with my 2007 VW Passat & integrate its steering wheel controls with my JVC aftermarket receiver. It works great and the only reason I am knocking off one star is because Crutchfield has some outdated information regarding this product. I was told by two different Crutchfield agents that in addition to this, I also needed the SWI-CAN and SWI-JACK adapters (3 pieces of equipment) to fully integrate my steering wheel controls. I was leery so I contacted PAC audio directly (twice as well). They informed me both times that all I needed were two PAC adapters; this C2R & either the SWI-JACK or newer 2011 SWI-RC (not carried by Crutchfield yet). The SWI-CAN is not needed at all as it has essentially been incorporated into this C2R-VW2. That being said, I was able to hook up the C2R-VW2 with relatively little headache. It was pretty simple for my 2007 VW Passat. Everything was marked good & no wire splicing or soldering of transistors like sometimes required for other cars. I then connected a SWI-RC to this unit in order to be able to obtain my steering wheel controls with my JVC head unit. basically was just a matter of a plug-n-play type install. One minor complaint I do have (& another reason for losing a star) is that the supplied instructions were sort of confusing. Instead, I went to the PAC audio website directly to get some better information on programming their hardware. Once I did that, all was good.

Straight-forward and easy to use. Just remember to wrap the wires around the back of the support bracket before trying to install your stereo.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This was easy enough to wire up. But, be aware that the instructions may not be 100% complete for all cars. Get everything connected, and DO NOT push the radio in so that it locks in place until you are sure that you've got power. My call to Crutchfield assistance (excellent, by the way) revealed that I had to connect one more wire.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This adapter made the installation of my new stereo very easy. I did all my wiring inside the house which was way nicer than dealing with it inside a cramped car. All I had to do was "plug" everything in when I got outside. I knocked off a star because after installation, the fuse on the adapter blew. The fuse wasn't labeled on the manual and I thought I had messed up the wiring. It took me half a day to retest every connection until I found the fuse. This was probably a no-brainer to most, but this was my first time installing a stereo so labeling the fuse would have made my life a lot easier lol.

Features

Overview: The PAC C2R-VW2 Radio Replacement Interface allows easy connection of an aftermarket stereo or navigation system for select Volkswagen vehicles; please see Outfit My Car to confirm compatibility. This interface provides connections for the new radio's power, illumination, and speaker leads, as well as reverse trigger, VSS, and parking brake wires for navigation and video systems. If your vehicle has steering wheel controls (and the aftermarket radio is compatible) they can be integrated using the optional PAC SWI-RC steering wheel control interface (541SWIRC, sold separately).
