Installation Note: Some newer vehicles require a special interface for this installation. Click here or call an Advisor at 1-888-955-6000 to see if you need an interface to install this steering wheel control adapter in your vehicle.

You want to install a Dual, Jensen, Pioneer, or Sony stereo in your vehicle, but you hate to give up the convenience of your factory steering wheel radio controls? No problem. PAC's SWI-PS interface allows you to use the steering wheel controls in a wide variety of vehicles to command your new Pioneer or Sony radio.

Installation is straightforward — connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and your stereo, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. The direct connection to the stereo means there's no need for an infrared emitter, allowing the SWI-PS to function even in bright sunlight. Step-by-step LED confirmation makes programming easy. Once connected, the SWI-PS' failsafe memory will learn up to 9 stereo functions, retaining them even if battery power is interrupted. Dimensions: 3-5/84"W x 1"H x 1-9/16"D. Warranty: 1 year.

Important Note: On some vehicles, you may need a voltmeter to locate the correct wires to connect to the SWI-PS. If you have no car audio installation experience, you should consider professional installation. The SWI-PS is compatible with most Pioneer stereos that have a steering wheel remote input, as well as Sony stereos with a wired remote input, but please call or email us to confirm compatibility with your radio.

Wiring Advisory: You'll usually have to tap into one to three wires in your vehicle at the radio location to connect this interface. If you're using a PAC OEM integration adapter to connect your new car stereo to your vehicle, then it most likely will have a prewired connector for this PAC steering wheel audio control adapter. In these cases, no additional wiring in required. PAC does provide custom wiring instructions for all confirmed compatible vehicles on their website.

What does a steering wheel audio control adapter do?

Many people aren't thrilled with the sound of their car's factory radio, but don't want to replace it because they'll lose those convenient audio controls on the steering wheel. For most vehicles, you can purchase an adapter that allows you to use those controls to run a new car stereo, so now you can have great sound and convenience too. Even cooler, if your new stereo has iPod controls, you can use your steering wheel controls to run your iPod.

Product Research

Features

Product Overview: The PAC SWI-PS interface allows you to retain the use of your steering wheel and/or rear seat radio controls when replacing the factory head unit in select vehicles with a Sony or Pioneer head unit with wired remote capability. In some GM vehicles, this adapter allows you to retain heater control buttons as well.

Wiring Advisory: You'll usually have to hardwire this adapter into your vehicle's wiring. In most vehicles, the factory radio plug does not have a wire dedicated to the steering wheel audio controls, so splicing is often required. PAC does provide custom wiring instructions for all confirmed compatible vehicles on their website.

Vehicle Compatibility: The SWI-PS is compatible with over 95% of the vehicles made from 1986 to the present. Compatible vehicles include many Acura, Audi, BMW, Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, Chrysler, Dodge, Ford, GMC, Honda, Hummer, Infiniti, Isuzu, Jaguar, Jeep, Kia, Land Rover, Lexus, Lincoln, Mazda, Mercury, Mini, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Oldsmobile, Plymouth, Pontiac, Saab, Saturn, Suzuki, Toyota, and Volkswagen vehicles and Harley Davidson motorcycles. Please consult "What Fits My Car" to see if your vehicle is compatible.

Known Incompatible Vehicles: The following list includes the vehicles that are known not to be compatible:

  • BMW: All with 5-volt SWC data wire at the steering column or a factory installed cell phone that's in use
  • Toyota: 1998-2003 Sienna vans
  • Volvo: All 2002-up vehicles

Head Unit Compatibility: The SWI-PS works with Sony head units with an input for the RM-X2S, RM-X3S, or RM-X4S wired remotes. The adapter also works for all Pioneer head units that have a wired remote control input. Note: The SWI-PS has a 3.5mm mini-plug connector.

Easily Programmable: The SWI-PS can be easily programmed. You can assign the buttons on the steering wheel to any of the 9 specific functions: Volume Up, Volume Down, Mute, Track/Seek Up, Track/Seek Down, Source, Preset/Disc Up, Preset/Disc Down, and Band. The SWI-PS has a non-volatile memory which keeps all programming in memory, even if the vehicle's battery is disconnected.

Resistor Kit: Some vehicles have a separate wire for each of the steering wheel buttons. Use the resistor kit for steering wheel push buttons that do not already have a resistor network connected to them. The resistor kit includes the following resistors:

  • 47 Ohms (yellow, purple, black, and gold bands)
  • 100 Ohms (brown, black, brown, and gold bands)
  • 150 Ohms (brown, green, brown, and gold bands)
  • 560 Ohms (green, blue, brown, and gold bands)
  • 1000 Ohms (brown, black, red, and gold bands)
  • 1500 Ohms (brown, green, red, and gold bands)
  • 3900 Ohms (orange, white, red, and gold bands)
  • 5100 Ohms (green, brown, red, and gold bands)

I've got control again!!!

Written By SL, Randallstown, MD on Wednesday, August 01, 2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Works great with my Pioneer head unit. I haven't had steering wheel control for a while so this is great. I printed install instructions for my Civic from the PAC website (a must for an easier install). Works just like it was a factory controller. I had no problems with the install, I wired resistor and read instruction's the night before installed the next day. I've been installing audio in my cars for as long as I can remember; a novice should the take time to fully understand the install and programming procedure in detail before starting.

Pros: Works great does what it suppose to do. Works great with my Pioneer DVD head unit. No delays in response between steering wheel control and receiver reaction.

Cons: Over priced, just a little

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed this with the Ford radio interface adapter when I put a Sony Nav receiver in my 2010 Ford F150 Screw with SYNC. I'm glad I did even if just for the volume controlls! how I would miss them! The install in my case was as easy as it gets because it literally plugs into the ford radio interface harness and the other end plugs into the 3.5mm wired remote jack on the HU. Now, the issues I did have came with programming the unit. Everything went OK, BUT the volume up button was lowering the volume, the vol down didnt even work, and the track down button was raising the volume! whoa baby! then I notice the fine print. In summary, it said the SWC might be whacked out when used with Sony receivers, and the solution is to reprogram the RADIOS wired remote settings. Guess what? As far as I can see in the Sony owners manual this is not something that can be done. My solution? Program the SWC in a different order than what the instructions stated to make the controlls do what they were intended to. That worked with the exception of track down which is just not functional. Dont know why, dont care. Its done and its good enough for me. Anyways, I think its a good product, just be wary if your using it with a Sony.

Pros: Retains convenient features

Cons: Dowsnt really work properly with Sony radios

2nd try this week

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

So I installed this, the PAC C2R-CHY4, and a Pioneer AVH-P2400BT in a 2012 Wrangler over the weekend. It took 6 hours to carefully remove the dash, modify the sub-dash, test, and install. It is the testing part that kills me. I tested it all right, but not with the engine running. It seems the steering wheel buttons worked great with the key on ACC, but as soon as I started the engine it was like the were not even there. I called tech support and we tested the voltages, all was good. He couldn't explain except to say it was a bad SWI-PS. Crutchfield made the right move, sending me a replacement without charge right away (under the condition I retun the other within 30 days). I hope this one works, It is a real pain to take apart and re-assemble...

Pros: Can program the buttons the way you like

Cons: Took a few trys to understand the programming procedure, but once you get it no problem. The one I got only worked when the engine was not running... very odd but you should test this too.

Great product, vague instructions

Written By Aaron, Calhoun, LA on Friday, June 08, 2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Product works as it is supposed to, but the instructions need to be clearer. I installed this with a PAC C2R-FRD1 Interface with a Pioneer AVH-P4400BH in a 2010 Ford Escape. It took some time to figure out the resistor that had to be put in, mainly due to the sketchy instructions, but once everything was hooked up, programming was simple.

Pros: Works flawlessly, easy programming

Cons: Difficult instructions, had to install resistor

Awesome interface controller

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It is awesome to have steering wheel controlls on an aftermarket stereo. The easy way to do this is go to their website and do a specific search for instructions. Made it simple. My instal was only three wires. Programming was kind of a breeze...

Pros: I love still having wheel controlls. Three wire hook-up. Easy programming after several attempts to understand the procedure.

Cons: The procedure instructions for programming should have been worded differently to eliminate any confusion. I didn't like having to cut and ground one of the wires on the factory wiring harness to complete the install. But it had to be done. Leave enough wire off the back of wiring harness connector in case you change your mind about leaving aftermarket stereo in car you wanna sell.

This is AWESOME to use your factory steering wheel radio controls. If your installing it in a Dodge Ram don't use the same ground as the stereo. Ground separately somewhere else.

Pros: It plugs up to Pioneer Stereo and works great.

Cons: Kinda hard finding the right wire in the steering wheel harness to connect to. In the instructions it says to use the same ground as the stereo. Don't do this it will not stay set. Use separate ground. (I had to call PAC tech support about this)

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I ordered this unit to turn on steering wheel controls for my Pioneer AppRadio. I have a 2009 VW GTI with the 8 button steering wheel controls. In order to avoid overlap with the multi function display i programmed the volume up and down buttons on the steering wheel as expected but I then programmed the star and phone buttons to be FF and RW.

the unit plugs right into the CAN adapter and then you program it according to the instructions. then you plug it into the radio and voila, steering wheel controls.

Pros: works perfectly once programmed, PAC website has great vehicle specific instructions. i definitely recommend checking the website for the instructions.

Cons: programming SWC controls could be a little intimidating to some people

There was in insert in the package directing me to the manufacturer's website for instructions specific to my vehicle. I followed those and had all of my steering wheel functions back in less than 15 minutes. Very simple to install and program.

Pros: Vehicle specific instructions available, very simple to install and program. Now have all steering wheel functions back, well worth the $.

Cons: None.

A complete waste of time. Do not buy.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This module was a complete waste of time, money and energy from the get go. Where to begin.

First, the instructions that come with the unit, as well as the instructions on the website read as though they were written by someone who was rushing to get out the door at 5 o'clock. Nothing is clearly explained.

Second, everything on this module has to be programmed by hand. And I do mean everything. First you have to manually program the type of , vehicle into the module. Then, every single button or radio control on your steering wheel must be manually and individually programmed, one at a time. Yes, you read that right. Every button, manually programmed by hand.

3rd, and most infuriating of all, when you call PAC for installation help, you get a message saying that only dealers can be helped on weekends. If you're not a dealer, you must call back during a weekday. Apparently those of us with jobs are out of luck.

After struggling through all of this, the module kept jumping the gun during programming, and would shut down the programming mode before I had actually entered anything.

A thoroughly frustrating experience from start to finish. I exchanged it for an Axxess Interface module that installed beautifully in about 45 minutes. It programmed everything automatically and was much better than the PAC piece of garbage.

Pros: Absolutely nothing

Cons: Everything. Literally everything

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

While I expected to have some difficulty with this product, at this point I can only say I don't use it. I didn't expect that I would have to solder resisters together (had someone else do it) nor that it would randomly work/not work. I am only giving it three stars. But, I think it might be my steering wheel controls. If I get it to work, I might change the rating.

Pros: Works, but with some connection issues.

Cons: Don't buy if you can't solder. It is necessary.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

As other reviewers have stated, go to the manufacturer website and download the instructions specific for your vehicle, makes things much simpler. Installed this after trying the Pioneer CD-SR100 steering wheel remote which did not work on my 04 Tundra. Put this in to use the original steering wheel controls and everything works great.

Pros: Easy to install and wire. Steering wheel controls work new head unit just like they did with the original system.

Cons: A little difficult to program. Took several tries due to all the flashing light sequences you have to go thru within a very limited amount of time.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I recommend that you don't use the paperwork that comes with this device. Once I figured out the right wiring diagram by going to the manufacturer's website, I was able to get this device programmed. It has been working great after that. It would be nice if this device also came with the required resistors that I needed to buy to complete the wiring for my vehicle. After everything was done, I was left feeling that this device isn't as easy as it claims to be, although as I have said, it does work well after figuring out that their paperwork is incorrect.

Pros: It works great! All of the buttons on my steering wheel are recognized and I haven't had any issues with them.

Cons: The wiring sheet that came with the product was incorrect for my vehicle. The manufacturers website had an entirely different (and correct) wiring diagram for my vehicle.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought this along with a Pioneer AVIC-X930BT to install in my 2006 Honda Civic. The instructions that were packaged with the PAC-SWIPS said one setting, the online guide at PAC's website said another way, so I went with the latest. It's very easy to program, I think I did it every day for almost 2 weeks. It would lose is programming, was very sensitive to voltage levels, and the volume control never worked correctly. If it worked at all, both Vol up and down on my steering wheel controls would raise the volume. Multiple calls to PAC's customer service, plus a replacement unit from them, and it still never worked correctly. Bought the ASWC, it self programmed, and works flawlessly.

A must have to retain steering wheel controls

Written By Fred, NC on Monday, August 29, 2011

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I recently replaced the factory stereo in my 2007 Mazda CX-9 with a Pioneer head unit. I was looking for something to better integrate my iPhone than the factory radio offered. In order for me to retain my steering wheel controls, I had to also purchase this unit. Once it was installed and programmed, I couldn't be happier. I was able to retain all of my controls and the programming was not as hard as some people have mentioned. It did take me four times to get everything just the way I wanted it but, that part only took about 20 minutes total. I am deducting one star from my rating for the installation instructions.

Upon opening the package, I noticed that there were many wires coming off the back of this unit and there were two sets of instructions included and they were slightly different. There was an insert with the product that told you to go to their web site and view the latest instructions. These were even different from the ones included. I called Crutchfield and even the tech adviser commented on how confusing the instructions were. Once we figured out that I really did have to cut one wire, installation went perfectly and the adapter functions exactly as described.

I knew going into it I wouldn't be able to use this for track changing and other functions beyond Volume up, Volume down, and Mute. PAC SWI products do their job well. I had to solder the resistor to one of the lines
though. It is definitely not for a novice installer. Also the instruction for my cars
was hidden in the back of their website so I had to notch it down a star. But it
works well in my car.

The only problem with my pioneer unit is that pressing track up is different from
preset up. I don't have enough buttons to configure that on my steering wheel so
I just set it up for preset up. I think it is rather a problem of my HU and not the
PAC.

Well i know i'm the greatest installer in the world, but hey i follow instructions to

product doesn't get a signal to it or something before i had a problem with
when i turned the car off the pac would not remember what i wanted it to
remember so my source button would work the volume an so forth it was crazy
so then i hooked the red wire up the the constant 12 volt yellow wire an i don't
have that problem any more, but at times the volume button doesn't work its
few an far in between when it doesn't, but its not a make or break so i'm really
not mad i have a touch screen anyway so it's not important just nice to have,
but it works. Not perfectly, but it does work.

3 stars may be a little harsh. I've had the product installed in my 2004 Jeep Liberty for
about a week now and it works great. I'm an avid do it your selfer and found their
instructions to be poor. Of course poor instructions seem to be the norm with do it
yourself projects. I think I spent more time interpreting the instructions than doing the
actual install.

In the manufacturers defense, they do make this product to work with a ton of different
cars, so it's probably hard to have explicit instructions and pics for each car. The step
that made me the most nervous, was removing the steering wheel column cover and
cutting "the red and black wire." With air bags and what not, this step seemed very risky,
but it ended up being the correct wire.

Also their instructions to remove the steering wheel column cover was very inadequate.
Thanks goodness for the Internet as I googled a few key words and pretty quickly found
specific instructions on how to do that step.

Anyway, if it wasn't for the poor instructions, I would have rated it 5 stars.

Only using product about 2 weeks. Install was easy for me but might prove difficult for
any novice installer. Programing can be tricky, and it helps to have a 2nd person read
out the commands/buttons you want to program. After 2 weeks of flawless use, it is now
starting to do strange things. I will try to adjust the volume and the disc will track
forward/reverse depending on which way I'm adjusting the volume. Overall not a bad
product, does what i needed it to do.

The first time i tried to install it got frustrated and gave up. Second time

invaluable. I didn't follow directions well the first time. Tech support took
pictures for me and email me the pictures to identified which wires need to be
cut & spliced. Once hooked up correctly, they help me program it one step at a
time. I had to prove to myself & my son i can to this! Thanks, Crutchfield.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I got this to go with a new Sony head unit. It works reasonably well, now that I have it in place. First issue was that the paper instructions packed with the unit had a different wire sequence than the instructions on the internet. A quick call to Crutchfield resolved the issue. Go with the internet. Second problem was that the instruction don't make it clear about how to hook up the ground. Again, another call to Crutchfield cleared it up.

Second issue is that you don't get all the exact same functions. On the stock unit the buttons that move from preset to preset also move up and down tracks on a CD. Now, they don't go from one radio preset to the next, they just go to the next available station. They do work the same with a CD or the iPhone.

I wish the functionality was exactly the same, but overall I got enough functionality to make it worthwhile.

Works for me!

Pain to Program

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

We installed this unit about 2 weeks ago. It seems to be working fine. The only thing is that is doesn't give you all the options the factory controls do. For example, you can't change the track on a CD anymore. We tried to program 2 functions on one button, but it hasn't worked. Unless we are doing something wrong. If you want basic volume and radio controls then this unit is great. Just don't expect everything to work the same. And it was hard has heck to get this thing installed on the steering column of my 2003 Trailblazer. You have to take the metal guard off to reach the wire.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I got this for my Pioneer 7200 HU to be remoted by the steering wheel (04 Grand Prix).
I'm sure the new HUs extra capabilities is a big reason but I can do more with my
steering wheel now. I'm not sure about the other complaints, but there is no delay I
notice. I did notice that mute doesn't completely mute the radio, but it's close enough for
me. Also, there is a quiet tone when you press a SW button to let you know it's reading a
remote command.
It's not as easy as installing other things. I did have to tap a fuse (pwr mirrors) to run an
accessory line to tap the factory harness (per instruction) but otherwise installation was
easy. If you use wire taps (like I did) make sure you remove some of the insulation from
the wire before using them. The makers of the wire taps say you can use them without
any stripping. Don't believe it. Failure to do so will probably prevent you from
programming the unit. So there might be power but when you start the programming
sequence the light won't go out after pressing the first SW button.

Not great customer service on there end. If it is my car, maybe they shouldn't offer it for my car. Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This product works exactly as advertised and installation was straight forward although it did take some time to get it properly installed. One problem I had is that I wanted to use my steering wheel control, but the Crutchfield site said it wouldn't work in my car. So I checked the PAC-Audio site and they showed it worked for the 2009 Toyota Corolla (Crutchfield site said it wouldn't work in this car). I have the 2010 which is almost identical to the 2009, so I ordered this from Crutchfield (I called an even an advisor said it wouldn't work in my car). Well, it works exactly as the instructions advised (for a 2009). Time to update your site Crutchfield!

Fast delivery......Thanks Crutchfield (but please update your site....thanks again)

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This product worked exactly as advertised and the main reason I replaced my OEM stereo with an aftermarket unit - I did not want to lose the steering wheel controls at all. I had an issue with the install but Crutchfield tech support was able to resolve the issue easily. I don't know about another reviewer, but I did not have to splice into any steering column wires as the OEM radio control wire runs all the way to the OEM stereo and it was at that point that I spliced into the OEM wiring - which makes sense as how else would the steering wheel controls be able to control the OEM stereo? It's a month down the road now and now glitches at all with the controls. I would highly recommend this unit and Crutchfield's excellent after sales support.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Excellent unit and easy to install. The unit allows you to reprogram the functions of the
steering wheel buttons to a configuration that made more sense for me. I purchased a
Jensen VM9313 head unit and I programmed the volume buttons to increment or
decrement the XM radio stations and the IPOD songs. Installation and programming
were very straight forward.

The impressive part of this purchase was the customer service that I received from
Jensen and Pac-Audio. There was a small interface issue between the Jensen unit and
the SWI-PS. The XM radio station or the song that I was listening to on the IPOD would
jump to the next station/song when I turned off the vehicle. Both Jensen and Pac-Audio
were responsive and each provided a solution. In this case, Jensen has a software
update for the unit that I was able to install in about 5 minutes.

Terrible instructions - worse support

Written By John, Mission Viejo, CA on Tuesday, December 01, 2009

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Contact info on the box is out of date.
Instructions in the box are horrible.
Instructions totally unclear about what was supposed to be done with the second wire coming from my steering wheel control.
Crutchfield said to connect it with the black wire on the PAC unit. That did not work.
Second call to Crutchfield, different guy, said to connect both to ground. PAC unit now "alive."
Programming instruction were equally vague: Does not mention "Mode" on factory unit.
Took 45 minutes to program.
The next day, my daughter reported that the unit stopped working as she drove back to school. Guess what I'll be doing on her next trip home?
Who knows if it will actually work?
PAC tech support was MIA on a Saturday.
With the head unit out, this should be a 15 minute job.
Instead, I advise you to pack a lunch.

This maybe a really good product, but it really needs Crutchfield vehicle specific instructions

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have this installed in a 2003 Grand Prix with a Sony head unit, and it works perfect.
I had a little trouble with the installation, the instructions said to use Pin 13 or 14 (blue or light green wires) on the factory connector.
I didn't have a wire in the 13 or 14 spot, but I had a blue wire in the 15 pin spot, ( I counted the pin spots twice to make sure I was seeing it right ) so I used that, and it worked.
Even thought the instructions were a little vague, I still give this 5 stars, because it works like it is supposed to.

Installed in Mazda 6 w/ Dual XHD7714 HU - steering controls work well.
Install would be easy for someone who has done it a time or two - I went
real slow and real careful due to splicing into factory harness, double
checking website wiring instructions against supplied diagrams. One of the
pins is listed as optional connection to gnd, I gnd'd it and recomment that
everyone do so - didn't try it ungrounded but if that's the design then follow
it, you're in there anyway.

Not just recommended, but a must-have/must-do!

This is a great adapter to use with my 2007 Sonata's steering wheel controls. The car only has volume up/down, mute and a mode button to switch between sources or inputs on the receiver. I was able to easily program all functions fairly easily. Since the adapter probably picks up on the different resistance applied to the circuit when the different steering wheel buttons are pressed, I wonder if I could trick a couple of extra features out of it that my stock steering wheel controls don't include by pressing 2 buttons simultaneously when programming it-like hitting volume up and mode at the same time to answer the phone, volume down and mode to hang up. I mounted the adapter under the dash just above the steering column so if I decide to try to squeeze a couple extra functions out of it, I won't have too much trouble getting to the program button.

I had a little trouble installing it, I highly recommend going to the PAC Audio website to download the vehicle specific instructions they are much eaiser to follow then the generic ones included with the unit. I have a 08 Mazda 3i and Pioneer head unit and it works great. The instructions say PIN 10 was optional but it IS REQUIRED at least on my year and model. It would no program and I could not figure it out and that is why. Its only 3 wires (Ground, Positive, SWI white PIN9) PIN 10 must be grounded out.

Car: 2008 Mazda 3 Hatchback
Radio: Pioneer Premier AVIC-F90BT

This unit works pretty well with Mazda3. The installation was very easy. I only had to deal with 2 wires from the factory radio harness and then add 12 volt switched and ground. I programmed it step by step using the included instructions and it worked the first time. It has also held the programming when the battery was disconnected (days at a time, sometimes).
The unit works as designed. The only two things I have noted are: 1) the mute button from the steering doesn't always work the first time when pressed-always works the second time and 2) don't HOLD the volume up to increase the volume-as the unit will queue them up the volume will keep increasing after you have released it. Just tap volume up for each increase that you want you will be okay. If you need large adjustments to the volume then just reach over and matke them on the head unit.
Overall, this unit works good I would recommend it.

This steering wheel control unit was a real pain. I had to call Crutfield for support but they were stumped. I then had to call the maker of the PAC unit for further support. I had to connect a DMM and read off the voltages to them for them for no buttions pushed, then for pushing the various sterring wheel buttions... They had me change some wiring and add a 150 ohm resister and change the version to 9. Even after all this it was very touchy to get this unit programmed. A real pain in my book. It shouldn't have to be this way.... I can only conclude that this is a bad design. But what can you do, if you want to replace your unit and still use the sterring wheel controls.....

Just installed this in my 2008 Subaru Impreza. Simple to wire up with just three wires (white/black/red); programming took a couple of tries since you have to finish it within a few seconds. Working great immediately afterwards; button response had little to no lag, and I was able to get vol +/-, mute, source and track +/- all working perfect. Only problem is that track +/- on my Pioneer AVIC-F90BT receiver is also seek +/- (for radio)... would have been better for me if those functions have been matched up with preset +/-. Otherwise I have no complaints... highly recommend installing this if you want to get your car's steering wheel controls working with your aftermarket head unit.

Perfect - or at least 99.95%

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

With the plethora of wires hanging from the connector, I only needed one wire to work on my 2008 350Z. So I removed the other wires by releasing the pin lock with a jeweler's screwdriver. All I needed was power, ground and the white wire.

Great vehicle specific info on the PAC website for programming. Instructions a little unclear. For example, much later in the documentation, you will find a comment to hit the programming button on the unit to skip over a non-supported function. But programming is very easy, once you read through the ENTIRE instructions first.

I have noticed that at times, one and only of my buttons seems to be intermittent, I don't know if it is temperature related, so I will likely crack the dash open again to reprogram. But overall it has been 99.95% spot on.

You may need to hook up some resistors to the vehicle wiring connector. So if you don't know what a resistor is, or how to use a soldering iron, this might be tough for you to install. But it really is simple. In my case two resistors were needed, one end of each into a particular pin in the connector, and the other ends tied together to the white wire. I soldered some 22 gauge wire to the resistor, to allow me to insert the wire into the connector, so it would make a better electrical connection (the resistor wire was too thin), and also so I could use some electrical tape on the connector to hold the wire in the pin hole.

This is a handy little gadget. I absolutely wanted to keep my steering wheel controls and this unit delivered. I can't emphasize enough: FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS EXACTLY for your vehicle. It comes with a bunch of paperwork but you have to look up YOUR vehicle for the wire colors and stuff. And, you must program it EXACTLY the way it says. It's best to memorize them before you start since you only have 7 seconds to perform certain steps. When programmed correctly, the unit works great. There does seem to be a slight delay between pressing the steering wheel button and the stereo actually responding (I'm talking fractions of a second here) but other than that, it works fine.

A tough job to install

Written By frn, Columbia, MD on Friday, March 06, 2009

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

first, do NOT plug it into the back of the head unit (thinking that you will complete the wiring another day) - unless you power it and program it completely. With the DUAL head unit, I installed the coax connector and left the PAC unit unpowered and unconnected while attempting to sort out the instructions. The passive unit totally scrambled the controls of the head unit making it nearly inoperable. Once the unit was "unplugged", the head unit returned to functional.

Next, the instructions - holey moley this is NOT a few moments job - take the time to go the PAC website and download their specific vehicle instructions. I am dismayed that I have to go into the steering column to make the connection. The weather has prevented me from completing this task I'm not happy at just how complicated this has become. I'm assuming it will work -- so I'm just giving it a 3 stars based entirely on the difficulty and complexity of installation.

Of course, there seems to be no alternative other than the original factory audio installation -- so, I guess I just have to deal with it.

This the second PAC SWI-PS I've installed so the installation took much less time. The only complaint, or suggestion for improvement, is that only one function can be assigned to each steering wheel switch. I'm referring to the up/down function switch that previously switched both radio stations and cd tracks. I assigned it to radio stations but now I'm thinking that IPOD track changes would have been a better choice. On the plus side the PAC SWI-PS works great for the functions it provides.

Pros: Keep steering wheel controls, and continue to watch the road.

Cons: Tons of wires that are not used, and add to the craziness.
Rudimentary directions are not well suited for beginners. Has a high price
tag, and does not come with the best diagrams.

Overall: I am a technophile so, this was more of a challenge to me, and I
love a good challenge. That does not mean that everyone likes a
challenging install. My initial install was wrong, after reading the directions,
reading over and over and over again, looking at the connector diagrams,
and working it -eventually got it to work. Now she can control her cell
phone, radio, CD's, iPOD, and so on from her steering wheel. Over all I am
glad it worked, and now that I know how to (read the crazy pac-audio

I bought this unit along with a Sony radio so I could retain the use of my steering wheel controls in a 2004 T-Bird. It is the best way to go, although it doesn't seem to use all the functions I would like. You can't for example program for source and also for band on the separate HD tuner I bought for the radio. It also doesn't seem to advance to presets, only to the seek function on the tuner. Maybe that is characteristic of the HD tuner I bought, which was a disappointment in itself. You can program for one or the other, or maybe I just haven't discovered how. Anyway, that's not a big problem. I can still advance songs and bands via my steering wheel controls and use those as presets.

Read the Instructions 10 times 1st

Written By marting007, USA on Friday, December 26, 2008

Installation was easy since I did the install at the same time I was putting
in a new reciever. I was able to tie the 3 wires from the PAC into the
adapter harness at the same time I installed the reciever harness.

I strongly recommend going online and downloading the vehicle specific
instructions from there rather than using the ones that come with the PAC.
The online instructions are much easier to understand. Once the unit is
installed read through the programming instructions over and over to get it
clear then go online and watch the video of the guy actually doing the
programming part. This will clear up many questions.

Only problem I had with this unit was that the Volume up and down and
the Track up and down were reversed when following the instructions with
the PAC. This was easily fixed by going back through the programming a
second time and reversing these steps.

The unit works well, but does require a longer depression of the buttons to
make get a response than the factory controls did.

Does exactly what it is supposed to do

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This adapter provides a flawless interface between my 05 Altima and my Pioneer FH-P8000BT. The steering wheel controls function exactly as they did with the factory radio.

It was, by far, the most complicated part of my install process and is probably not for the novice or the squeamish. However, the manufacturer's web site provides very good, vehicle specific, instructions that are even better than Crutchfield's - which is a very high bar to clear! And there is always Crutchfield's superior customer support to fall back on.

The interface does have to be programed. If you can follow instructions programing is no problem. That rules me out! It took several attempts before I figured out what I was dong wrong. It is a fairly involved process of pushing buttons, watching leds, and operating steering wheel controls in a specific order that has to be done correctly from start finish or done again. I did get it right finally and the difficulties were not the fault of the instructions.

2006 Altima

Written By Brad, Cave Creek, AZ on Monday, October 06, 2008

I have a 2006 Altima with a Delphi XM receiver. The FM modulator got tons of static, and I finally resolved the problem by replacing the factory head unit. Great car, but no thought from Nissan, in not including an INPUT jack for our IPOD or XM receiver!

It's a 2006 Special Edition Altima, and after I installed a new Pioneer radio, I noticed the functions on the left of the steering wheel were gone. This device is awesome! The installer had NO PROBLEM installing it, and it totally regained all functions!

I highly recommend this product. I also HIGHLY recommend purchasing it from Crutchfield. I originally tried to get it cheaper at a competitor on the net, but after ordering it, I found it was on back order, and wasn't going to be shipped till the following week! I cancelled it, and came here. They were very professional and nice to deal with.

Best Bet To Use Steering Wheel Controls

Written By Chris, Montana on Saturday, September 20, 2008

I ran into some small snags initially with this, but discovered it was due to
having a slightly older firmware. The problem was that the device would
lose its programming after the vehicle was powered down for more than a
couple hours. After getting a newer firmware update this worked perfectly
(had to combine it with the PAC-CAN for my vehicle). Definitely beats
having to give up the controls on the steering wheel and no issues with
sunlight like some of the IR versions.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed this along with a new Head Unit into my 2002 Thunderbird 'vert and it was extremely simple. The data wire did not come with a harness so I just coated the end of the bare wire in just enough solder to hold it together and slipped that into the harness instead of the pin going to the factory head unit. Programming was a cinch, the only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is the slight delay others are talking about which I experience as well.

Works great

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have to say that I commend Crutchfield on their customer service for helping with this.

I purchased this for my VW 2002 Jetta to use with a new Pioneer system (P9800-BT). Later that day, I received a call from Crutchfield asking if I was aware that I needed the SWI-CAN in addition for my VW. I had totally missed it. Proactive service like that is why I like Crutchfield. They look out for you !

Install went smoothly, instructions were a little complicated but if followed not a problem. The unit does exactly what it says and my volume / seek-up steering wheel buttons work just fine.

One item on the VW is to look for a good space to place the two units. I actually cut out the back plastic bracket to get access below the radio. It worked fine for creating a spot for the wires and PAC devices.

Thanks again Crutchfield !

It does the job

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Push come to shove, this unit does the job. However, the installation
seems unnecesarily complex and I experience the same delays that others
have mentioned. The delay seems most troubling with the volume control.
The delay makes it difficult to make slight adjustments to the volume. If the
instructions are followed, the adapter does everything that it's supposed to albeit with delay. Be sure to test that all of the functions perform as you
expect them to before you put everything back together. Some of the
functions, such as track up/down may not do what you expect and may
need to be reporgrammed.
Installation notes:

1. The instructions said to connect pin 10 if available. I interpreted that to
mean it was optional. That is not the case. If pin 10 is wired on the factory
harness, you must connect pin 10 in order for the PAC adapter to work.

2. The adapter required splicing into the factory wiring, which I was very
reluctant to do. If pins 9 & 10 of the factory harness adapter included by
Crutchfield had been wired, I could have connected the steering wheel
adapter wires to the harness adapter rather than splicing into the factory
harness. If you want to avoid splicing to the factory harness, buy a spare
harness adapter (the one with the factory connector on it) that you can rob a couple of pins and wires from. Then you can wire the PAC steering wheel adapter wires into the harness adapter rather than splicing into your
factory harness.

Flawless

Written By Jeremy, MN on Thursday, July 24, 2008

Just installed in a 97 Grand Prix (w/ Sony CDX- GT820IP) with no problems. For my car, it was a simple 3-wire hookup. Since this unit draws such
little power, I was able to wire the power and ground wires directly to those supplying the head unit. A third wire taps into the data wire and we're
set.

Like others have said, be sure to read the directions
several times before attempting the installation. The
instructions for the programming are hard to understand. Despite this, I managed to get it right the first time. I was skeptical of this product before using it, but it works!

There is no lag when you press a button and they operate as fast if not faster than with the factory stereo.

Price is a little steep for what I would expect this
sort of accessory to cost, but if you're like me and must have your steering wheel controls this is totally worth it.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

While this product may work well, connecting it to a Honda Pilot requires taking steering wheel apart. When I ordered this item, I told the "adviser" that I wasn't very handy & I only wanted it if it was an easy installation. "Sure, no problem." I wasn't told that soldering would be necessary too. It turns out that installing it is beyond my capabilities. And another thing, this item doesn't come with vehicle specific instructions. So now I've wasted a day off from work and will have to find someone to install it.

Works Very Well

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed unit in my 2004 Nissan Pathfinder LE with Pioneer system.

The steering wheel control was originally mapped to volume (up/down),
radio station/CD track (up/down) and mode. With the pioneer system, you
cannot have radio preset station (up / down) also work CD track
(up/down). The CD track (up / down) also causes radio seek (up / down).
Therefore, a choice had to be made for preset selections, CD selections or
volume - only 2 of the 3 could be supported. For this limitation (which is
really associated with the Pioneer stereo), I penalized PAC system 1 star.

The instructions were informative, but must be read PRIOR to installation
(multiple times). Programming was very straight forward and can be
repeated over & over until you have the configuration mapping desired.

The unit works very well and I recommend it others!
