Overview

Our take on the Pioneer DEH-1200MP

If you want to be able to listen to your iPod® while driving, play all your CDs in the car, and enjoy rich, full sound, the Pioneer DEH-1200MP fits the bill. And best of all you can add this full-featured stereo to your car without dropping too much cash.

If you want to be able to listen to your iPod® while driving, play all your CDs in the car, and enjoy rich, full sound, the Pioneer DEH-1200MP fits the bill. And best of all you can add this full-featured stereo to your car without dropping too much cash.

The DEH-1200MP plays discs you've loaded with MP3 and WMA files, and features a handy front-panel auxiliary input for your music player. For drive-time radio, Pioneer's SuperTuner IIID offers superlative AM/FM reception. Meanwhile, a handy remote control allows you to keep your eyes on the road when you're driving.

You'll enjoy the superior sound of Pioneer's high-performance MOSFET amplifier, the same one that's found in their top models, as you tailor your tone with a 3-band equalizer. A set of preamp outputs provides signal for an external amp or powered subwoofer.

This is a very good low cost radio. The sound is good and it has all the features one could expect, except a scan function. The owner's manual is brief and rather cryptic but is, in the end, sufficient. If you decide to buy this unit, you will not be unhappy.

I recently installed this radio in (of all things) a golf cart using some basic outdoor rated speakers mounted to the back of the cart. The installation was very easy and straightforward. Sound is very good for a radio at this price! The resistance to skipping using CDs is excellent (the suspension of a golf cart is not the best! :-) The remote works great, and overall I am very pleased with this radio, especially for the price! Highly recommended as an upgrade if you have a basic radio and want to add a CD player, front input or just add some features.

This is a great stereo! I bought it for my older Oldsmobile. I was concerned about the visual appeal of the unit. I wanted something that would go with an older car. The center dial makes it look like it could be from the 80's. The neutral clock display goes well with my digital dash. The red buttons blend in with the interior of the car. This unit is much better than than the Sony it replaced. The best part is that it was much cheaper than what I paid for the Sony six years ago. This Pioneer has much better sound and an AUX port!

Like my previous Pioneer head unit this WILL fit into a Vanagon dash, you just have to push the wires down and out of the way. And the unit performs as I'd expect from a lower priced unit. Sound is fine. The only negative is it's hard to see/read the various controls on the face, more contrast would be nice.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I upgraded cause my factory head unit was basically falling apart, and for the most part I had resorted to using my ipod with headphones on while driving, and weirdly enough, I had to turn off the car to retrieve any CD's I had put in. So I figured I'd better upgrade. It's so much better than my old stereo, and since I replaced the front and rear speakers, it's a completely different experience. The head unit puts much more power to the bass and cleans up the lower notes noticeably. The highs are crisper, and there is no quality lost between the CD and and AUX in, so goodie there. On the down note, the equalizer only has the mid, low, high, and boost settings, which basically makes it a 3 band EQ vs some of the 8 or 10 band I've seen in higher priced HU's, but this is a remarkably inexpensive one, so no real gripes, considering the tremendous upgrade in quality and functionality. Good buy.

    Outstanding Value

Written by: Spincut from Austin, Tex. on May 25, 2011

If you have $250 to spend for a stereo, by all means do so, and it will be a better unit. But if you are in the $100-$125 price range, this is an outstanding value, especially when you get all the install gear for free, as I did. My only complaint is that the radio station buttons are kind of small and kind of close to the volume knob for big fat fingers (like mine). But I can live with it! You will not regret buying this Pioneer.

i purchased this stereo after reading the reviews and I have to say I am VERY VERY pleased with this radio and how it turned out in the install. Speaking of which, the diagrams, MASTER sheets, dash bezel, and OEM compatible wiring harness that were all included free of charge with the radio made the install a breeze when I mounted it in an 88 suburban. Everything went perfectly well. In fact, I spent more time on deciding which radio stations to program and checking out the cd player and iPod player functionality than I did on the actual install. For those seeking a single din radio that has pre amp outputs, mp3 player front mounted port, a detachable face and a remote control, all for less than $100, this is the unit for you!

Can't beat it for the price. The value add was Crutchfield including the wire harnesses to make installation a snap. The greatest part was after install it would not power. I searched internet and looked for the proper fuse to check. Fuse was good. I called the Crutchfield support team on Saturday morning and someone picked up immediately and spoke English! He pointed me to a 2nd fuse and sure enough that was my problem. Can't say enough good things about support!!!!!!! 2 minute conversation and I was done.

I just needed a basic CD player as original radio got out of order. This one had very low price and was one of my favorite brands. I am generally satisfied for its overall function, but if I tell you something I like to be improved, i) display has only one brightness setting and it is not bright enough at day time. Specially I need it as clock, but I can barely read the time. ii) volume knob is little too low and not easy to dial. I wish it's a little higher. Other than these, this is good unit and I recommend to those who are looking for a basic cheap unit. One thing I like to add is about its color design. This doesn't have fancy eye catching color design, totally black with very little accent. This black theme is well blended in my car dash board (Civic 2000) and not appearing well. I like this for the security reason (get less people's attention) when parked.

Got this to replace my wife stock cassette deck in her 96 Camry! She is the opposite of an audiophile so I wanted something under $100 so she could play CD's. I was looking at a couple of decks at $90-$99 but my advisor, Ringo, pointed out they didn't come with installation hardare. He found this Pioneer that did. My son installed in about 90 mins and sounds great even with the crappy stock speakers. The controls are little diff than my Sony Xplod but pretty simple to figure out. You can't beat it for the price. I mainly wanted it because it has an auxiliary input so I could hook up my IPod. For that, it works fine. The website says it accepts MP3 CDs. It's true that it takes them, but I've noticed that it's a bit hesitant when reading the data CDs. Sometimes it skips. Everything else works fine. The remote is a bit unnecessary, but again, you can't beat it for seventy bucks.

Only after i installed it did i find the factory amp was fried (oops) Regardless, service was great, shipping was fast, and the install and wiring kit made putting it in a breeze. The unit works and sounds great! My only minor beef is that the buttons are too small and close together, but then again I have big hands and fingers that don't work all that well any more. Thankfully the remotes buttons are big enough. It dosen't have a bunch of bells and whistles but that wasn't what I was looking for. Would I recommend it? You bet! Well I buy from Crutchfield again? I have always trusted Pioneer head units in my car. I needed to replace my ancient one and quality vs price were considered. Definitely felt this was a good deal plus I finally have a front input for my MP3 player. I ordered the player and hoped for the best. Once it was delivered, I installed quite easily. I like the functions and the organization of the options. I do feel they tried to simplify them too much. Great for new pioneer owners, kind of strange for regular pioneer buyers. But ok none the less. Only thing that annoys me is how close the eject & features buttons are placed. I seem to always press feature instead of eject and vice-versa. I am still happy with my decision.

As with all Pioneer head units, it sounds great. The only function I do not like is pushing in on the volume knob to change sources. While driving, I end up changing the source while turning the volume up or down. Other than that, it's a good unit for the price.

    Display Features

Detachable Face Security: This unit features Detachable Face Security. A face-fixing screw is supplied for making the face non-detachable, if desired.

Note: No face case is included with this unit. An optional soft face case (142DFC1X, sold separately) can be purchased for this unit.

LCD Display: The DEH-1200MP features a black background with a one-line, 10-character white LCD display.

Display Illumination/Clock Display: When the Clock Display has been turned on, pressing and holding the rotary knob turns off audio output, but the clock display remains on. When the Clock Display has been turned off, pressing and holding the rotary knob turns the unit off completely. Even if you have turned the radio completely off you can view the clock display be pressing the clock button. The clock will then remain On until you turn it back Off. When the unit is On you can select between the clock display or the audio track/tuner display.

    Audio Section

MOSFET Amplifier: The DEH-1200MP is equipped with a MOSFET amplifier. Compared to conventional power supplies, the MOSFET amplification circuit is smaller and more efficient, and it delivers increased power with less distortion and absolutely zero on/off switching noise. More power means louder and cleaner music at higher volumes because you're not pushing the limits of the amplification circuit.

CEA2006 Compliant: The power specifications for the DEH-1200MP are compliant with the CEA2006 Mobile Amplifier Power Testing and Measurement standards from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). These standards were developed as a way to equitably compare power specs from model to model and between manufacturers. The power output specs for the DEH-1200MP are as follows:

    • CEA2006 Specs: 14 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20Hz-20kHz, 1% THD-N)
    • Continuous Power Output: 22 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 50Hz-15kHz, 5% THD)
    • Maximum Power Output: 50 watts x 4 channels

EEQ (Easy EQ): The DEH-1200MP is equipped with a 3-band EQ with 6 preset EQ settings: Powerful, Dynamic, Vocal, Natural, Custom, and EQ Flat. The Custom band can be adjusted as follows:

    • Bass: +/- 6dB at 100 Hz
    • Mid:+/- 6dB at 1 kHz
    • Treble:+/- 6dB at 10 kHz

Loudness: The Loudness feature compensates for deficiencies in the low and high sound ranges at low volume. You can set the Loudness feature to High, Low, or Off.

Source Level Adjustment (SLA): This function lets you adjust the volume level of each source to prevent radical changes in volume when switching between sources. Settings are based on the volume level of the FM tuner, which remains unchanged. Each source can be independently adjusted from -4dB to +4dB.

2.0-Volt Preamp Output: The Pioneer DEH-1200MP features one pair of 2.0 volt preamp outputs (left/right) fixed to its rear chassis.

    Radio Functions

Supertuner IIID AM/FM Tuner: The Supertuner IIID features Feed Forward Control, which avoids multi-path interference. This pre-detection of interference enables quick filter control and results in less distortion. In addition, the Supertuner IIID creates enhanced stereo during multi-path interference, unlike conventional tuners that collapse to mono. Digital processing reduces distortion, and improves Signal-to-Noise Ratio and stereo separation. Advanced analog technology improves signal processing sensitivity.

BSM (Best Stations Memory): The BSM (Best Stations Memory) function lets you automatically store the six strongest stations under preset buttons 1-6 of the currently tuned band. The tuner has 3 FM banks and 1 AM bank. You can store 6 presets for each bank giving you a total of 18 FM presets and 6 AM presets.

Local Tuning: Local seek tuning lets you tune in only those radio stations with sufficiently strong signals for good reception. There are 4 level of sensitivity for FM and two levels for AM. The higher settings allow reception of only the strongest stations, while lower settings let you receive progressively weaker stations.

    Disc Playback

MP3/WMA/WAV Playback: This unit can play MP3, WMA and WAV files recorded on CD-ROM, CD-R, and CD-RW discs in ISO9660 Level 1/Level 2, Joliet, and Romeo formats. MP3 files with a bit rate from 8-320 kbps, WMA files with a constant bit rate from 48-320 kbps, and WMA files with a variable bit rate from 48-384 kbps are supported. The unit is compatible with ID3 Tags and will display artist, folder, file, and album name, plus comments. Up to 8 directories, 99 folders and 999 files per disc are recognized by this unit.

Rough Search: You can search every 10 tracks of a disc.

Compression/BMX: The Compression and BMX digital enhancement functions let you adjust the sound quality of compressed audio file playback. You can set up to two levels of COMP and BMX, or turn each function off.

Installation Angle: Optimum CD playback performance is obtained when the unit is installed at an angle of less than 60-degrees.

    Aux Connection

Auxiliary Input: The DEH-1200MP is equipped with a front panel 3.5mm stereo minijack auxiliary input for connecting external components, such as a portable MP3 player, DVD, or VCR. AUX must be turned on in the setup menu in order to be selected as a source.

    Remote Control

Remote Control: The DEH-1200MP comes with an IR wireless remote control (QXA3196). The remote allows you to control the volume, switch between sources, pause the CD, change the display, and adjust the audio. The attenuator button allows you to quickly lower the volume by about 90% ( function that cannot be performed from the front panel).
