Our take on the Pioneer DEH-150MP

by Ken Nail
Pioneer

Why replace your factory radio?

Two good reasons - sound quality and cool features. A new car stereo offers power that's superior to most factory radios, along with more sophisticated tone controls. And most car stereos offer built-in or optional features that add safety and fun to life in your car, including inputs for your iPod or MP3 player, Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free cell phone calls, satellite radio or HD Radio reception, and connections for building an audio system in your car.

A fresh look and impressive features

Pioneer's stamped their latest receivers with a sleek new look that's designed for user-friendly operation. The DEH-150MP CD receiver's a case in point, with a 12-character display that makes it easier to read song info from music files or the RDS information from your favorite radio stations. And underneath the skin, a simple, intuitive menu structure allows for quick sonic adjustments and song searches.

Pioneer DEH-150MP

Music and media options

This receiver is ready to spin your favorite CDs, whether store-bought or burned at home. And since it plays MP3 and WMA files, you can load up a couple of discs with songs and have enough music for the longest road trips. The illuminated aux input adds a stylish touch to your dash and gives you a convenient place to plug in your iPod®, iPhone®, or any other device with an audio out.

    Disc Playback

Disc Compatibility: The Pioneer DEH-150MP supports audio playback of CD-Audio, CD-TEXT, CD-R, and CD-RW discs.

MP3/WMA/WAV Playback: This unit can play MP3, WMA and WAV files recorded on CD-R and CD-RW discs in ISO9660 Level 1/Level 2, Joliet, and Romeo formats. MP3 files with a bit rate from 8-320 kbps, WMA files with a constant bit rate from 48-320 kbps, and WMA files with a variable bit rate from 48-384 kbps are supported. The unit also supports 8/16-bit WAV files. The unit is compatible with ID3 Tags and will display artist, folder, file, and album name, plus comments. Up to 8 directories, 99 folders and 999 files per disc are recognized by this unit.

File/Track Name List: The Name List feature displays a list of MP3/WMA folders and tracks on a loaded CD, so you can easily access your music. The Name List will also display the list of track titles on a CD Text disc.

Off Insert/Eject: A CD disc can be inserted or ejected with the power off. When a disc is inserted with the power off, the unit will automatically power up and begin playback.

Auto Off Eject: When you eject a disc, the unit will automatically power off (unless you switch sources before ejecting the disc).

Installation Angle: Optimum CD playback performance is obtained when the unit is installed at an angle of less than 60-degrees.

    Radio Functions

Supertuner IIID AM/FM Tuner: The Supertuner IIID features Feed Forward Control, which avoids multi-path interference. This pre-detection of interference enables quick filter control and results in less distortion. In addition, the Supertuner IIID creates enhanced stereo during multi-path interference, unlike conventional tuners that collapse to mono. Digital processing reduces distortion, and improves Signal-to-Noise Ratio and stereo separation. Advanced analog technology improves signal processing sensitivity.

BSM (Best Stations Memory): The BSM (Best Stations Memory) function lets you automatically store the six strongest stations under preset buttons 1-6 of the currently tuned band. The tuner has 3 FM banks and 1 AM bank. You can store 6 presets for each bank giving you a total of 18 FM presets and 6 AM presets.

Local Tuning: Local seek tuning lets you tune in only those radio stations with sufficiently strong signals for good reception. There are 4 levels of sensitivity for FM and two levels for AM. The higher settings allow reception of only the strongest stations, while lower settings let you receive progressively weaker stations.

RDS: The Radio Data System (RDS) feature displays radio broadcast information such as artist, title, and album when listening to compatible AM/FM stations.

    Aux Connection

Auxiliary Input: The DEH-150MP is equipped with a front panel 3.5mm stereo minijack auxiliary input for connecting external components, such as a portable digital audio player.

    Audio Section

24 Bit D/A Converter: The Pioneer in-dash head unit utilizes a 24-bit digital to analog converter for superior sound quality.

MOSFET Amplifier: The DEH-150MP is equipped with a MOSFET amplifier. Compared to conventional power supplies, the MOSFET amplification circuit is smaller and more efficient, and it delivers increased power with less distortion and absolutely zero on/off switching noise. More power means louder and cleaner music at higher volumes because you're not pushing the limits of the amplification circuit. The power specifications for the DEH-150MP are compliant with the CEA2006 Mobile Amplifier Power Testing and Measurement standards from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). These standards were developed as a way to equitably compare power specs from model to model and between manufacturers.

    • CEA2006 Specs: 14 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20Hz-20kHz, 1% THD-N)
    • Continuous Power Output: 22 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 50Hz-15kHz, 5% THD)
    • Maximum Power Output: 50 watts x 4 channels

Advanced Sound Retriever: The Advanced Sound Retriever automatically enhances compressed audio and restores the original richness of the recording. Hear the detail, warmth, and clarity, the way the artist intended it, from all of your highly compressed MP3 and WMA files. By restoring data (especially higher frequencies) that tends to get lost in the digital compression process, Pioneer's Advanced Sound Retriever technology enhances audio reproduction nearly all the way up to 20 kHz frequencies

Equalizer: The Pioneer DEH-150MP features a Preset & Custom EQ. The built-in equalizer offers 7 preset sound modes (Powerful, Dynamic, Vocal, Natural, Custom 1, Custom 2, and Flat) suitable for the music genre of your choice. The two Custom modes allow you to manually adjust the head unit's 5-band EQ (80Hz, 250Hz, 800Hz, 2.5kHz, 8kHz) from +/-6dB. Custom 1 can be set separately for each source; while Custom 2 and the other 5 presets are shared settings used for all sources.

Bass Boost The DEH-150MP features a bass boost function which can be used to enhance low-frequency bass sound. The bass boost function can be set between 0-6.

Loudness: The Loudness feature compensates for deficiencies in the low and high sound ranges at low volume. You can set the Loudness feature to Low, Mid, High, or Off.

Source Level Adjustment (SLA): This function lets you adjust the volume level of each source to prevent radical changes in volume when switching between sources. Settings are based on the volume level of the FM tuner, which remains unchanged. Each source can be independently adjusted from -4dB to +4dB.

2.0-Volt Preamp Outputs: The Pioneer DEH-150MP features one pair of 2.0-volt preamp outputs. The unit's preamp outputs can be configured as fading rear-channel outputs or non-fading subwoofer outputs with a low-pass filter, phase adjustment, and output level control.

Subwoofer Control: When the head unit's preamp output is configured as a subwoofer output, you can select the frequency of the low pass filter (50Hz, 63Hz, 80Hz, 100Hz, or 125 Hz), select the filter slope (-6/-12dB), select the subwoofer phase (normal/reverse), and the subwoofer gain (+6 to -24).

High-Pass Crossover: When you don't want low-frequency sound to be heard through your front or rear speakers, you can simply active the head unit's HPF (high pass filter). By activating the HPF, only frequencies higher than those in the selected range are output from the front or rear speakers. The high pass filter crossover can be set to 50Hz, 63Hz, 80Hz, 100Hz, 125Hz, 160hz, 200Hz or Off. The slope level of the HPF can also be adjusted to -6dB or 12dB.

Switchable Rear Channel/Subwoofer Speaker Output: The rear speaker outputs can be set to provide full range output with full fading capability, or they can be set to provide non-fading subwoofer (low-pass) output. When the rear speaker outputs are set to subwoofer mode, the rear preamp outputs also switch from full range to subwoofer outputs. When set for subwoofer operation, you can connect the rear speaker leads directly to two small 4-ohm passive subwoofers or a dual voice coil sub with 4-ohm voice coils. If you prefer to use a single 2-ohm subwoofer, you can connect the woofer to one set of speaker leads, leaving the other set of rear leads disconnected. The maximum output provided when a 2-ohm load is connected to one set of leads is 70 watts.

    Display Features

Detachable Face Security: This unit features detachable face security. No face case is included with this unit. An optional soft face case (142DFC1X, sold separately) can be purchased for this unit.

LCD w/ LED Backlight: The DEH-150MP features a black background with a one-line, 12-character white LCD with LED backlight.

Display Illumination/Clock Display: When the Clock Display has been turned on, pressing and holding the "SRC" button turns off audio output, but the clock display and button illumination remains on (you can press the "DISP" button to turn off). When the Clock Display has been turned off, pressing and holding the "SRC" button turns the unit off completely. Even if you have turned the radio completely off you can view the clock display by pressing the "DISP" button. The clock will then remain On until you turn it back Off. When the unit is On, you can select between the clock display or the audio track/tuner display.

    Remote Control

Remote Control: The DEH-150MP comes with an IR wireless remote control. The remote allows you to control the volume, switch between sources, pause the CD, change the display, and adjust the audio. You can also mute the volume (function that cannot be performed from the front panel).

This item was purchased to replace the factory radio in a 1996 Honda Civic. The price was less than I expected to pay and the installation instructions were extremely helpful and well-written. I doubt that I could have installed the radio without these instructions. The sound quality was very good considering the speakers are 18 years old. The only limitation is the ease of use. The radio has a good range of controls, but it has taken awhile to learn how to use them.

    Had potential, but...

Written By Patrick, State Center, IA on Sunday, April 06, 2014

Bought two of these for two different vehicles. I bought them for two reasons: I always had good experience with the tuners in Pioneer units, and the RMS power output has always seemed great.

Well, the first unit just died (internal amp failure). Fair enough, every company has a dud once in a while. But then, the second unit failed in another car. The back speakers died... first the left, then the right in a haze of distortion. I tested the speakers... 4 ohms on both. Speakers were new, worked great in another car. Problem was the head unit. Replaced it with a JVC and everything worked great.

Not sure what happened here. I used to go to Pioneer as a cheap but good replacement. Maybe they had a bad lot of electronics... Either way, two of them bad in a row was enough for me to move on to other brands.
    Pros:
Good sound quality and output while it lasted
    Cons:
    Died after a few days

This is a really great value when you consider the free shipping, customer support, and install directions. Obviously not the top of the line, but the unit packs a punch. Controls are cumbersome in my opinion.
    Pros:
Superb value, pioneer quality, easy install, customer support.
    Cons:
    Cumbersome menu controls.

Great replacement for the old radio that came with my truck. Wanted something on the cheaper end price wise but still a brand I know. Display is easy to read day or night. I like that you can adjust the brightness of the buttons. The sound quality is good.
    Pros:
More than one preset EQs Easy to read screen
    Cons:
The custom EQs are hard to set up, if you don't know what the different hertz mean just use the EQs that are built in.

Overall, this is a great audio piece at a good value. I had mine professionally installed yesterday in my Ford Explorer. It sounds good with the stock speakers, don't think it will be necessary to replace them. Tested out with a variety of music and all sounded great.
    Pros:
Sleek design, easy to use, very short acclamation time. Didn't take long for a professional to install, although the wiring harness that Crutchfield included was wrong, so I did have to pay extra.
    Cons:
Mine was missing the remote control. Unsure if this was manufacturer or shipper error. Looking into the issue.

This Pioneer DEH-150MP is perfect for the money and also has excellent Quality, Good sound. My use is in a pickup truck, mounted in dash, Crutchfields instructions were excellent and made the job go easier.
    Pros:
Good sound, Great price, the tuner strength is amazing (I live in a rural area)
    Cons:
The only con to me is where I am a older person (60) I wish that it did not require all the modern controls to do simple functions, BUT that seems to be the way they all are nowadays.

Great entry level unit for the money. I have always had good experiences with Pioneer products.
    Pros:
Easy to install and functions well.
    Cons:
There is one knob that controls everything based the engaging a master control button. If the master control button is pushed by accident, the function of the one knob changes functions. this can happen while driving and lead to distracted driving when trying to return to the desired function. The owners manual uses micro print which is a pain for geezers like me.

After years of trying to fix my factory radio, I finally decided I'd had enough. Having known of both Pioneer and Crutchfield since my college days, I felt I couldn't go wrong getting this unit. Plus , you offered the mounting adapter and wiring harness, so all I had to do was put it in! I'm still getting used to the nuances of the controls, but the unit is easy to set up and use. The sound is great, radio, CD or MP3 player. Pioneer has always been a quality brand to me and I was not disappointed with this receiver. It does everything it says it will and more. I especially like the "Artist" and "Title" feature on the radio and the Level meter on the CD. The clock is redundant but you don't have to display it. The Remote Control is a bit much, since the radio is easy to reach and operate in my Jeep. I don't really need it. Some might like it though. It took me a few days to get used to the submenus and where things are located in them, but once I learned where everything was, no problem! The unit looks as good as it sounds I've had several compliments on both. What more can I say: Pioneer and Crutchfield, great combination.
    Pros:
Easy to install. Good instructions to show how to operate the unit's many features. Excellent sound!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I gave it a 5 because for under $100 I got the stereo and all installation supplies. I have never done anything car audio related ever and it was easy to install. I have a Mazda MPV minivan. This stereo does what I want (mainly play mp3 discs and aux-in jack) and then some. I just have factory speakers and no sub but find the audio quality just fine. Music sounds way better than with whatever my minivan came with. I listen to a lot of books on tape and those sound fine too, plus I can adjust EQ and whatnot. My factory stereo was skipping and then refusing to eject discs plus I had no aux in (I actually bought some aftermarket hack and installed that a few years back but it always had this annoying feedback and the audio was so quiet it was worthless). I should have bought this stereo years ago! Also the Crutchfield people helped me get all the right installation parts. Everything I needed was included and even a few extra pieces (maybe choices on how to mount it?). The only think that does *not* work are the volume and track controls on my steering wheel but I already knew I'd need another adapter for that and now am used to using the controls on the unit. Also the little remote only works when pointed directly at the unit, I tried to velcro that to my steering wheel but it didn't work.
    Pros:
price, better sound quality and bass than the factory unit, aux-in jack, plays mp3/wma discs (sometimes easier for me to make a disc with 150 songs than cart around an mp3 player), plate comes off so no theft
    Cons:
none considering the price and how easy it was to install

Face: You can't go wrong with Pioneer

Written By EricF, Concord, CA on Saturday, October 19, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've never had a bad Pioneer product ever. Although this unit is low priced, it's definetely a Pioneer. Great sound, no difficult installation, very functional and has Pioneer's very well balanced EQ settings and built in amplifier options. This is a HUGE upgrade over the factory Ford deck. Especially with the AUX connector. The goal for me was simply to have a great sounding receiver with an AUX connector. This deck does this without an issue. I sincerely doubt the cd player will ever get used. My MP3 player happily plays along as does my tablet. This is a good bang for your buck radio, the sound is incredible for the price!
    Pros:
Great sound, looks good, controls are easy to use as is the remote. For the price, Pioneer did NOT skimp on audio quality! detachable faceplate is nice snug fit.
    Cons:
Unfortunately, there's nothing perfect... the one thing that is annoying is when you switch modes, say from tuner to AUX, the screen fizzles a graphics display, which takes about 1.5seconds to change to words. To me, this will get old. The built in dimmer gives 1 option, I wish it'd be user settable. When you press a radio preset to lock in a radio station it doesn't beep or give an easy to know indicator. These are small little gripes, but It's a "con".

    More Than I Expected

Written By Paul K, Forest, VA on Wednesday, October 09, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Factory radio in my twelve year old truck was losing functionality and it was time to replace, but I didn't want to spend big money for a receiver in an older high mileage truck used mostly for local hauling. Still, as long as I was going to make the change, I wanted a front panel AUX plug in for my iPod that was NOT available on my original factory system. Low cost and additional functionality led me to the Pioneer DEH-150MP from Crutchfield. With the free shipping I was able to also buy the wiring harness adapters and mounting brackets for a discount(strongly recommended) and stay under budget. Although I have never done a car radio/receiver removal and installation before, the Crutchfield written instructions and diagrams took me through it step by step. At one point I was confused about which mounting brackets to use (the kit provides multiple options) but a quick phone call to Crutchfield Customer Service (answered on the second ring) put me back on track. Total install time was about three hours, but I am known to be ponderously slow and always recheck everything. Everything worked perfectly the first time and I am pleased with the sound quality. CD player is great and the AUX input for my iPod is quite an improvement on the former system. The receiver controls have taken a while to get used to. But that will resolve with time and usage. For an under $100 car/truck receiver that is a great choice.
    Pros:
Installs and works just as advertised. The Crutchfield instructions were spot on. Great value for the money. Comes with a remote control for easier receiver operation.
    Cons:
Operating controls for receiver are not always intuitive. Many operations require multiple steps on a decision tree - requiring the operator to visually pay attention - not a great thing when driving a car on the highway. Takes a while to get the front/rear and left /right fader balance just right. Factory default seems to favor the rear speakers just a bit.

This is a great radio for the money. I installed it in my 1993 Chev trk. I got the whole package with it and it was everything I needed for the install. The pdf map gives you the necessary details. I give them 10 stars.

    Great unit!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a terrific unit, great sound quality, but I'm even more impressed with the way the folks at Crutchfield put this package together. I'm not a particularly handy guy, but I can work a screwdriver and a socket wrench, and that's all I needed to do this installation. Instead of paying the $70 my local shop wanted to install it, I followed the Crutchfield directions and it was remarkably simple. When I had one question about the wiring, all it took was a quick phone call and the guy on the other end understood exactly what my question was, told me the answer and I had this unit installed playing CDs within 90 minutes. Just a terrific experience, a great stereo unit and a very happy customer. Thanks, Crutchfield.
    Pros:
    Sound quality, ease of installation
    Cons:
    None at all.

    Pioneer DEH-150MP

It's a low priced head unit but still a little pricey for what it is !! Great use but update the screen a little, it's not a 90' style wrist watch ! Give us a screen we can use, Panasonic was great about that feature when it was still producing head units ! Otherwise it's a good buy for what it is ! Great for work vehicles !!
    Pros:
Volume knob is easy to use not touchy or too hard !
    Cons:
Needs a better screen, menu use !! Not just this model but most of there models unless its a DVD unit, those are great units produced by pioneer !!

    Not enough...

Not a bad stereo if you don't need or want a strong or loud system.Just not nearly enough for me,it was not as strong or clear as the factory radio it replaced(so i traded in and up)The eq on it is a joke as is the ease of use, very annoying and not well laid out IMO.Over all the sound on low levels was nice, clear and pretty crisp..but try to add bass or volume and it's quality goes down drastically
    Pros:
bright color plate, good sound at low levels
    Cons:
not very strong, not user friendly, cant add bass or volume

Great product, easy to install, good quality, looks great. The only problem is it doesn't have a usb port. That is not very important though. I would recomend this to anyone. Easy to install do to dash filler and adapters. No problems at all.
    Pros:
Easy to install. Looks good. Easy to use
    Cons:
    No usb port.
