Pioneer DEH-3300UB

Overview

Our take on the Pioneer DEH-3300UB

Pioneer gives their DEH-3300UB CD receiver some sexy angles on its detachable face, then splashes carbon-fiber inspired accents around its perimeter for an especially cool look — and the dark gray and red color scheme will give your interior the aggressive edge you're looking for.

Pioneer gives their DEH-3300UB CD receiver some sexy angles on its detachable face, then splashes carbon-fiber inspired accents around its perimeter for an especially cool look — and the dark gray and red color scheme will give your interior the aggressive edge you're looking for.

This versatile receiver also includes auxiliary and USB inputs on its front panel, so you can enjoy your music from a variety of sources. And it's compatible with your iPod® and iPhone® — just plug them into the USB port for direct control.

Anyone who's ever listened to Pioneer's famed MOSFET amplifier will tell you that it's really strong, offering high-fidelity performance with plenty of usable power. And when you're listening to music files, the Advanced Sound Retriever reverses the compression process to add back some of the sonic info that's lost in the digital conversion. Translation? You'll notice a nice improvement in the sound quality of your MP3 and WMA files. Pioneer includes a remote control so your friends can pick the next song.

Note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver.

I don't know exactly how good this unit is. It is much better than the speakers that I have it hooked up to so what do I care? It has more features than any radio I have ever owned but cost the least (I have owned a few $150-$350 Pioneers, as well as Blaupunkt).

I know I shouldn't expect much from a less expensive Pioneer deck, but overall I am kind of disappointed. It installed easily enough and it sounds fairly good for the price. I found many of the features annoying to use- such as, if while trying to adjust the volume, you accidentally push the volume control instead of turning it (which happened all the time while driving) it takes you into a setting menu and then you need to wait for what feels like an eternity for that menu to go away so that you can then attempt to adjust the volume again. Although it did work with and charge both my iPhone 4S and iPhone 5s, I regularly got Error-19 messages. In order to fix this, you need to unplug the iPhone, wait a few secs and then plug it back in. Often this did not solve the problem, so the only other solution was to turn the car off (to kill power to the stereo) and then turn the car back on. For the last few weeks, the error-19 occurred daily and would only resolve itself if the power to the deck was killed. Finally, yesterday, the USB port stopped working altogether. So, for me, the stereo has been rendered useless. That being said, the stereo did last for about 2 years- you decide if that's an acceptable lifespan for a deck around $100.

Usual Pioneer High Quality. Sounds Great, BUT be aware. I bought this to be able to listen to and charge my iPhone 3GS while on the road. Even with the Pionner USB cord it does not charge. I tried various Apple and aftermarket USB sync cords but always get the "charging not supported" message when pluging it in to the USB port. Pioneer claims this unit is iPod and iPhone compatible. While your iPod and iPhone will play through the USB port it will not charge. So beware when buying this unit. And do not waste your money on the Pioneer USB cord thinking this will work. It will not. Also the controls are small and hard to see. Difficult to learn controls

Pros: Pioneer Build quality and Sound Supertuner works and sound great

Cons: Wont charge iPhone or iPod

Great head unit over stock, works flawlessly. I kinda like the remote that comes with it. The menu is just a little confusing at first but videos on YouTube by Pioneer show you all the features and how to navigate, etc. Also some people mentioned that the unit is "too bright" at night and it can be adjusted, however this didn't affect me. It's nice and clear and night and isn't much brighter than my instrument cluster lights are. The wiring is simple, and from start to finish the installation took maybe 15 minutes. I highly recommend this head unit if you are looking for an affordable replacement of your factory stereo at a great price with great features. I easily give it 5 stars.

Pros: Great sound quality, price, features, easy installation.

Great service from Crutchfield. Have bee using them since 1984 and this was no exception. The reciever and installiation kits worked perfectly and the reciever works great. Has good sound and clarity. My daughter loves it in her car. She especially loves the remote so she doesn't have to reach for the panel controls. You have to love Crutchfield t

install was easy, once i got everything together. took about 20 minutes to get the old one out (stock ford) and about 15 to get the new one in. works well with USB/iPhone, but difficult to change between folders of music. pioneer usage manual is not clear (and printed too small). included remote doesn't have much side to side range, so mounting on the steering wheel of my for ranger doesn't work

Great little radio at a great price. Install was easy and the fit looks like the unit came stock. Only hiccup was that the antenna would hit the back of the frame where the radio installed. I had to drill out a hole for the antenna wire to go through. After that, no problems at all.

Pros: Great price. Great unit. Awesome customer service.

Cons: Antenna adapter would hit the frame in the dash in the back of the hole where the radio installed.

I was really impressed with the quality of the receiver for the cost. Very simple install. I never installed a car stereo in my life and was determined to install this by myself (did i mention too cheap). The whole install may have taken two hours because i was being extra cautious Customer service rocks!! Thanks Crutchfield for making me the cool dad!

Pros: Multiple ports for your apple products, an amazing upgrade from the standard receiver, cost and customer service on call to answer any install questions

Cons: Once you connect your i-pod via the usb port, you lose the ease of scrolling and searching for music.

It's a great radio for the money, but the menu is very confusing. I didn't like that the pre-outs we're factory set for a sub amp with a low pass filter applied to the output. It was very confusing to switch it back to full range output and took about two days before I finally called tech support and they walked me through it. The manual was not very clear about this. I think the radio should be factory set for full range not sub output.

    Pros: Low price, good sound

    Cons: Confusing menus

This Pioneer is pretty good over all. All the functions easy to figure out, except on how to set the clock. (I had to look it up in the manual). Works great in my little Ranger. The USB drive in the front is the best feature. Load up a USB thumb drive and you have tons of music to listen to. Plus no skipping (of course) with the USB.

Overall, solid CD player. Always been a big fan of Pioneer. However, there are some caveats (see cons below).

Pros: Great price, easy to install, external USB-iPod hook-up & AUX connections

Cons: Terrible FM reception for a specific station in the Twin Cities. I was using a 20 year old JVC in my last car prior to this purchase, and the JVC outperformed this Pioneer deck for FM. The USB hook-up is iPod specific. You cannot play music from another source (such as a Smartphone). Once you plug your iPod in, you cannot "see" what's playing, which is disappointing. You can change songs from the deck, but only FWD/Backward Frustrating "menu" control if you hit the wrong button

I bought this stereo along with 2 sets of speakers and all the gear needed for installation for my 17 year old son's car and he loves it. The sound is crystal clear and and can really crank. My son thinks it's the greatest thing since sliced bread. He flipped when he saw that he could play his own music from his iPod and a USB Flash Drive. For me the best part was talking with Axel from Crutchfield to help me make sure that all of the components I was buying would fit in my son's car. Customer Service at it's best. Thanks Axel. Crutchfield is now the only place I will shop for electronics.

The radio was purchsed for the main purpose of allowing an IPOD to be played through the car stereo. In this regard, it is excellent. My only criticism of the unit is the very poor radio reception. Prior to installation, the old factory radio had 2 antennas coming in. During installation, I called the hotline and they said the two antenna setup was obsolete and the newer radio technology only required the main antenna. I followed their instruction and just attached the single antenna. Reception is extremely poor. All other functions re excellent.

Disappointed. The volume control is also the function controller. Every time you touch the knob to adjust the volume, the knob pushes in and it becomes the function switch. It is VERY hard to adjust the volume while the car is moving.

I don't usually take time out of my day to write reviews, and while the stereo is great (I mean, it's a stereo, right?), what I really wanted to review here was Crutchfield. I drive a 2001 Wrangler and while I was able to find some basic/rough/generic install instructions on forums, nothing came close to the excellent service Crutchfield provides. I'm not a car expert by any means (literally; I've changed swapped out the headlights, that's it) and the idea of installing the stereo myself was somewhat daunting. Paired with their website, which determined what accessories I needed in addition to the head unit, and the installation instructions that were sent, I was able to complete the entire install in a matter of hours. I would easily recommend the website to any friends and probably never use another company for these type of purchases. In conclusion, great stereo, great website, great service! You can't go wrong here.

Pros: iPhone/iPod controls are great; pretty intuitive, considering; Sound is excellent.

Cons: Not really sure why Bluetooth isn't standard on stereos these days. This receiver doesn't have it, which isn't a big deal, but the technology has been around for awhile now...

Crutchfield rocks! I have been a customer for many many years now. Most of my purchases were from when I was a teenager and you couldn't beat the service back then. Once I ordered a car stereo that didn't fit my car...they caught the error before I even received the stereo and expressed shipped me one that fit which was considerably more money than the one I ordered for the same price and trusted me to send the incorrect one back, they even covered the shipping. I am 39 now and have two teenagers' cars that I need to start outfitting with stereo systems and have recently purchased a stereo for starters and it's nice to see that Crutchfield is just as professional now as it was twenty years ago. It's more than just business with Crutchfield, these guys really care!

Pros: Awesome stereo! Great powerful sound, great looks, great features. You can't beat this stereo for the price. I put this stereo in my daughter's car and the smile on her face when we turned it on was priceless! I have always been a Pioneer fan and haven't purchased a car stereo for awhile....it's nice to see that Pioneer still has what it takes to dominate!!

Cons: No complaints here. If you have steak taste on a hotdog budget I am sure you could pick apart some of the basic features. However, rest assured that you are not buying a budget stereo that is jam packed full of bells and whistles that give you nothing but trouble. You can just turn this one on and enjoy!

When purchasing the stereo Crutchfield also recommended additional items that I needed for installation and accessories that I might want to add on. Everything was fitted to my daughter's vehicle. This was my first time installing a car stereo and the instructions and diagrams were on the money. I did run into a little snag with the wiring, but called Dean (Crutchfield Tech) and he told me exactly what to do. I will recommend and only use Crutchfield from now on!!!!! 5 STARS FROM BEGINNING TO END!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!(By the way-stereo worked on the first try!!!)

Receiver works exactly as imagined. Replaced stock front and rear speakers and deck at the same time. All I really wanted from the new deck was the USB and AUX input options. Happy everything works. Wire harnesses saved a bunch of time, still have to make splices but provided instructions layed out everything very easy. For speakers, I had to drill new mounting holes since stock Camry housing was prefab to the old speaker. Speakers work fine, perfect entry level speakers to replace stock. Note: Reading instructions I couldn't believe how quickly the deck installation went. Not counting the time it took to splice wire harnesses, I had the old deck out and new one in less than 10 minutes. (Wire harness splicing took another 10 minutes)

I knew that the stereo would function great because I had Pioneer before, but this one is really awesome; I'm especially impressed with the usb access. I loaded 8GB usb drive with zillions :-) of songs and many folders to act as playlists, and the navigation although easy, it takes a bit getting used to, but works great! Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I buy this Pioneer receiver to add iPod/iPhone in dash control and connection to my 2011 Toyota Yaris HatchBack. The first I do was to change the factory speakers that make a good change to the sound. The second was to add a Self Powered Bazooka Subwoofer, that buy in a store here on Puerto Rico, great product that you can get here in Crutchfield. But now thinking if I buy from Crutchfield the speakers and the subwoofer it was better than buy them on other store because Crutchfield included all the stuff needed to connect them and guides to connect the equipment yourself and all for free, also free shipping. But back to the Pioneer, it finally complete my system and now it sound amazing like a pro. The quality of Pioneer power, sound, equalizer adjustments, front USB connection (make for iPod/iPhone), front auxiliary connection, it can scroll the song, artist, album or time elapsed, other good features and the price are very good. My only complain is that it do not have dimmer control when you turn on the lights, but it don't change my mind that was a very good receiver for the money. And I am a fan customer of Crutchfield since 2002 then as I always said, Crutchfield is the best online electronic site to buy and the service is excellent 10 from 10.

My 2005 Toyota Matrix came with the factory stereo system and a few years ago, I changed the factory speakers for four 6" Pioneer speakers (two 3 way and two 2 way). The factory radio never really pushed those speakers to their full potential, in my opinion. So, I recently brought the Pioneer DEH-3300UB. First off, placing the order (over the phone) took less than 10 minutes. I ordered it Wednesday morning and received it Friday afternoon (via UPS). Installation took a little under an hour (my first radio installation), but I'm sure that I couldn't have done it with the installation kit and instructions provided by Crutchfield. The sound is way better than the stock radio. Now, my speakers pack the punch that they lacked for so long. And the iPod/iPhone compatibility is a welcome plus. If you're on a tight budget and want a decent radio, this is the one you should buy.

After researching various brands, reviews and options I decided to go with this model based on quality, good reviews and Pioneer's reputation...I also liked the look of this stereo. I upgraded my factory cd player which no longer worked for my 95 Toyota Supra. It was long overdue!! I could of spent alot more, but had a budget and like Pioneer sound. Sound is excellent, crutchfield advisor was extremely helpful and professional. The kit I received was perfect and looks awesome in my car....I received everything quickly and as promised. The options are nice to have, you just have to play with it a little to figure it out, I didn't even use the instructions...yes, you cannot dim the lights as a reviewer pointed out, but that was not a deal breaker for me. I would highly recommend Crutchfield and this model for any upgrade....I love blasting music and this does the job!! Thanks Crutchfield!!!!!

My gripes are The control buttons are tiny and hard to read. There's quite a learning curve for running this thing. The operating manual needs to be rewritten to be more easily understood. I would recommend it. Good value for the price.

I am extremely happy with this purchase. The Crutchfield advisor provided the right installation kits, and I also purchased the installation card. I had this radio installed in my '97 Infinity I30, which still has the factory Bose amplifier and Bose speaker system. The sound is fantastic, and I really like the iPod control. It is so easy to use, and the navigation is excellent. Great for listening to music or audio books. Thank you Crutchfield!

Excellent sound. I put this item in a 1986 Mercedes 300e and it sounds great. The Tech's at Crutchfield did a great job walking me through some wiring issues. The harness worked great and made the job alot easier. My antenna even works now!! Thanks and I would recommend to anyone.

This is a good upgrade from the factory HU and offers all the basic functions you would expect in addition to the iPod control app mode which is very handy. Sound quality improvement is immediately noticeable and when paired with aftermarket speakers non-amped you will regret all those years spent with factory gear. Only gripe I would have is that Pioneer purposely creates multiple entry level units, with marginal differences between each product (e.g. iPod control over the basic, the next model up has multiple LCD colour illumination). Crutchfield were excellent in customer service and the provided instructions and wire harness saved me a bit from paying for an installation. You may find it cheaper elsewhere but the service and free install gear more than offsets the savings.

Unit performs as advertised and I am pleased with it. The dial knob is shallow, so if you have fingers on the larger than average size, it is not comfortable turning it as your fingers are also touching the other selector buttons as you try to get a good grip on the slippery dial surface. This does not detract significantly from its otherwise nice design and performance. A good buy.

The sound is good but I wish the EQ was better. For the price I guess I shouldn't complain! Going through the Aux jack I get a lot of hiss, but this could be the cable I'm using. Volume from radio is not as loud as CD, so switching to CD from radio causes volume to jump (a trait of less expensive units). iPod interface only plays songs in alphabetical order only allowing you to skip to the next or backup. Display is hard to see (if not impossible) in strong sunlight. This could be because of the angle of installation, so it may not be a problem with some vehicles. That was the number one reason I could not give this unit a 4 out of 5. A simple glare coating on the display face would have solved this problem!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I liked the price and it had all the bells and whistles (CD, USB and Aux port) that I was looking for. The sound was very good, the only problem and the reason I returned the unit is that there is no way to dim the controls. I called Crutchfield to make sure I wasn't overlooking anything, and we both came to the same conclusion-there is no dimming capability on this unit. During daylight hours and in the city at night, the illumination of the unit's controls is not an issue. The problem occurs at night outside the city where the only lighting is from the vehicles dashboard controls and oncoming traffic headlights. The bright stereo lights (both the red and white lights on the stereo unit) are just too bright and there is no way to dim them. These lights literally lit up the interior of my vehicle. Since I drive at night often, this was unacceptable. I returned the stereo and purchased a JVC K-DR 520 (same price, more power, same bells and whistles) and has dimming capability both manually and automatically (when you turn the headlights on, the stereo controls dim to a desired setting). The JVC K-DR 520 works and sounds great. Tuning to the radio presets on this unit is kind of a hassle-overall a good unit.

WOW! Put this in my '04 F150. Sound is fantastic. It was an easy installation after looking up how to remove factory hardware. About 1 hr from start to finish. Taking a little while to get used to all the features but slowly getting the hang of it w/o looking in the manual. Definitely would recommend this stereo. It's okay - it sounds good but this ridiculous "MC" nob, which should just be the volume, is also the control to go through the menu. When I'm driving and I have it louder in the car by myself and I pull into work and want to lower it, I try and to turn the volume down and all it does is sift through a bunch of stupid menus (fader/balance) but NO volume. I'm still sitting here wasting time going through this stupid manual trying to figure out how to get it to just go to the volume control without having to sift through a bunch of junk. There shouldn't be a "learning curve" when buying a new stereo. Also, it's true - the song names do not show from a USB drive, even though the mp3s are named by song. To do stuff on this thing you have to go through a number of buttons and look at the screen (really fun when you're driving) which is also annoying. I would not buy this thing again.

Not a bad unit for the money. I bought two of them, one for my Jeep YJ and the other for my Chevy work van. I was looking for a unit with USB/CD-MP3/IPOD/AUX and this fits the bill. I love the simple 3 band EQ for the treble, midrange, bass plus subwoofer output control and 5 preset EQ's. I was sad to read that my Ipod classic 30gig was not supported, but I tried it anyway and it WORKS it evens reads pioneer on the ipod when connected. I've had a few pioneer mid to high end head units in the pass and this unit feel's like a lighter metal and thinner plastic was used to build it. Hope it doesn't determine how long it will last. All in all not bad for the money.

    Display Features

Detachable Face Security: This unit features Detachable Face Security. A face-fixing screw is supplied for making the face non-detachable, if desired.

Note: No face case is included with this unit. An optional soft face case (142DFC1X, sold separately) can be purchased for this unit.

White LCD: The DEH-3300UB features a bright white LCD (1-line/10-Character) that can display upper- and lower-case characters. This display makes it easy to read and cycle through song titles, artists, and other texts.

Ever Scroll: When the Ever Scroll feature is set to On, recorded text information scrolls continuously on the display. It will auto-scroll up to 64 characters. Set this feature to Off if you prefer the information to scroll only once.

Display Illumination/Clock Display: When the Clock Display has been turned on, pressing and holding the Source button turns off audio output, but the clock display remains on. When the Clock Display has been turned off, pressing and holding the source button turns the unit off completely. Even if you have turned the radio completely off you can view the clock display by pressing the clock button. The clock will then remain On until you turn it back Off. When the unit is On you can select between the clock display or the audio track/tuner display.

    Audio Section

24 Bit D/A Converter: The Pioneer in-dash head unitutilizes a 24-bit digital to analog converter for superior CD sound quality.

MOSFET Amplifier: The DEH-3300UB is equipped with a MOSFET amplifier. Compared to conventional power supplies, the MOSFET amplification circuit is smaller and more efficient, and it delivers increased power with less distortion and absolutely zero on/off switching noise. More power means louder and cleaner music at higher volumes because you're not pushing the limits of the amplification circuit.

CEA2006 Compliant: The power specifications for the DEH-3300UB are compliant with the CEA2006 Mobile Amplifier Power Testing and Measurement standards from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). These standards were developed as a way to equitably compare power specs from model to model and between manufacturers. The power output specs for the DEH-3300UB are as follows:

    • CEA2006 Specs: 14 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20Hz-20kHz, 1% THD-N)
    • Continuous Power Output: 22 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 50Hz-15kHz, 5% THD)
    • Maximum Power Output: 50 watts x 4 channels (or 50 watts x 2 channels at 4 ohms + 70 watts x 1 channel at 2 ohms for subwoofer)

3-Way Rotary Commander: The Pioneer DEH-3300UB features a 3-Way Rotary Commander for easy control. You can scroll through your music and audio settings with greater ease using the 3-way rotary commander.

Advanced Sound Retriever: The Advanced Sound Retriever automatically enhances compressed audio and restores the original richness of the recording. When Advanced Sound Retriever is on, the high frequency range is compensated to match the frequency response curve to the original sound. There are two available levels of the Advanced Sound Retriever effect.

EEQ (Easy EQ): The DEH-3300UB is equipped with a 3-band EQ with 6 preset EQ settings: Powerful, Dynamic, Vocal, Natural, Custom, and EQ Flat. The Custom band can be adjusted as follows:

    • Bass: +/- 6dB at 100 Hz
    • Mid: +/- 6dB at 1 kHz
    • Treble: +/- 6dB at 10 kHz

Loudness: The Loudness feature compensates for deficiencies in the low and high sound ranges at low volume. You can set the Loudness feature to Low, Mid, High, or Off.

Source Level Adjustment (SLA): This function lets you adjust the volume level of each source to prevent radical changes in volume when switching between sources. Settings are based on the volume level of the FM tuner, which remains unchanged. Each source can be independently adjusted from -4dB to +4dB.

2.0-Volt Preamp Output: The Pioneer DEH-3300UB features one pair of 2.0-volt preamp outputs. The unit's preamp output can be configured as a fading rear-channel output or a non-fading subwoofer output with a low-pass filter, phase adjustment, and output level control. When configured as the subwoofer output, you can select the frequency of the 18dB/octave low pass filter (50, 63, 80, 100, or 125 Hz), select the subwoofer phase (normal/reverse), and the subwoofer gain (+6 to -24).

Switchable Rear Channel/Subwoofer Speaker Output: The rear speaker outputs can be set to provide full range output with full fading capability, or they can be set to provide non-fading subwoofer (low-pass) output. When the rear speaker outputs are set to subwoofer mode, the rear preamp outputs also switch from full range to subwoofer outputs. When set for subwoofer operation, you can connect the rear speaker leads directly to two small 4-ohm passive subwoofers or a dual voice coil sub with 4-ohm voice coils. If you prefer to use a single 2-ohm subwoofer, you can connect the woofer to one set of speaker leads, leaving the other set of rear leads disconnected. The maximum output provided when a 2-ohm load is connected to one set of leads is 70 watts.

    Radio Functions

Supertuner IIID AM/FM Tuner: The Supertuner IIID features Feed Forward Control, which avoids multi-path interference. This pre-detection of interference enables quick filter control and results in less distortion. In addition, the Supertuner IIID creates enhanced stereo during multi-path interference, unlike conventional tuners that collapse to mono. Digital processing reduces distortion, and improves Signal-to-Noise Ratio and stereo separation. Advanced analog technology improves signal processing sensitivity.

RDS: The Radio Data System (RDS) feature displays radio broadcast information such as artist, title, and album when listening to compatible AM/FM stations.

BSM (Best Stations Memory): The BSM (Best Stations Memory) function lets you automatically store the six strongest stations under preset buttons 1-6 of the currently tuned band. The tuner has 3 FM banks and 1 AM bank. You can store 6 presets for each bank giving you a total of 18 FM presets and 6 AM presets.

Local Tuning: Local seek tuning lets you tune in only those radio stations with sufficiently strong signals for good reception. There are 4 level of sensitivity for FM and two levels for AM. The higher settings allow reception of only the strongest stations, while lower settings let you receive progressively weaker stations.

    Disc Playback

Compatible Discs: The Pioneer DEH-3300UB supports playback of CD-Audio, CD-Text, CD-R, and CD-RW discs.

MP3/WMA Playback: This unit can play MP3 and WMA files recorded on, CD-R and CD-RW discs in ISO9660 Level 1/Level 2, Joliet, and Romeo formats.
