User-friendly layout and selectable illumination
Pioneer's laid out the controls of the DEH-3400UB CD receiver for maximum utility. You'll find convenient buttons for iPod® search and control, plus a rotary knob for volume and menu control. And to complement the sharp styling, you can customize the illumination color to match your car's dashboard lighting — or even choose separate colors for the buttons and the display.

Pioneer DEH-3400UB

Control your iPod or iPhone®
This versatile receiver includes auxiliary and USB inputs on its front panel, so you can enjoy your music from a variety of sources. Plug into the USB port, and tap into your iPod and iPhone's music libraries. If you like listening to streaming content on your iPhone, Pioneer's App Mode USB connection provides cleaner audio than an auxiliary input.

Sound quality you'll relish
Pioneer's acclaimed MOSFET amplifier offers high-fidelity performance with plenty of usable "real world" power that compares to any car stereo on the market. And when you're listening to music files, the Advanced Sound Retriever reverses the compression process to add back some of the sonic info that's lost in the digital conversion. Translation? You'll notice a nice improvement in the sound quality of your MP3 and WMA files.

Want to keep your car's steering wheel audio controls?
In most vehicles, you can use an adapter to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this Pioneer stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and this Pioneer, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. Check the "Accessories" tab for compatible adapters.

Note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver.

    Display Features

Detachable Face Security: The Pioneer DEH-3400UB in-dash CD receiver features Detachable Face Security. A face-fixing screw is supplied for making the face non-detachable, if desired.

Note: No face case is included with this unit. An optional soft face case (142DFC1X, sold separately) can be purchased for this unit.

Color Customization: Color Customization lets the user match their receiver illumination to their vehicle's interior lighting. Over 210,000 colors are available to match the illumination of almost any car. The button illumination and display illumination colors can be customized separately for an endless number of color combinations. You can select from 27 preset colors (White to Rose), customize an illumination color (by adjusting Red, Blue, and Green brightness levels), or scan through various color settings (All/Warm/Ambient/Calm/Custom).

Ever Scroll: When the Ever Scroll feature is set to On, recorded text information scrolls continuously on the display. It will auto-scroll up to 64 characters. Set this feature to Off if you prefer the information to scroll only once.

Display Illumination/Clock Display: When the Clock Display has been turned on, pressing and holding the Source button turns off audio output, but the clock display remains on. When the Clock Display has been turned off, pressing and holding the source button turns the unit off completely. Even if you have turned the radio completely off you can view the clock display by pressing the clock button. The clock will then remain On until you turn it back Off. When the unit is On you can select between the clock display or the audio track/tuner display.

    Audio Section

24 Bit D/A Converter: The Pioneer in-dash head unit utilizes a 24-bit digital to analog converter for superior CD sound quality.

MOSFET Amplifier: The DEH-3400UB is equipped with a MOSFET amplifier. Compared to conventional power supplies, the MOSFET amplification circuit is smaller and more efficient, and it delivers increased power with less distortion and absolutely zero on/off switching noise. More power means louder and cleaner music at higher volumes because you're not pushing the limits of the amplification circuit.

CEA2006 Compliant: The power specifications for the DEH-3400UB are compliant with the CEA2006 Mobile Amplifier Power Testing and Measurement standards from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). These standards were developed as a way to equitably compare power specs from model to model and between manufacturers. The power output specs for the DEH-3400UB are as follows:

    • CEA2006 Specs: 14 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20Hz-20kHz, 1% THD-N)
    • Continuous Power Output: 22 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 50Hz-15kHz, 5% THD)
    • Maximum Power Output: 50 watts x 4 channels (or 50 watts x 2 channels at 4 ohms + 70 watts x 1 channel at 2 ohms for subwoofer)

3-Way Rotary Commander: The Pioneer DEH-3400UB features a 3-Way Rotary Commander for easy control. You can scroll through your music and audio settings with greater ease using the 3-way rotary commander.

Advanced Sound Retriever: The Advanced Sound Retriever automatically enhances compressed audio and restores the original richness of the recording. Hear the detail, warmth, and clarity, the way the artist intended it, from all of your highly compressed MP3 and WMA files stored on your USB device, iPod/iPhone, and portable media players. By restoring data (especially higher frequencies) that tends to get lost in the digital compression process, Pioneer's Advanced Sound Retriever technology enhances audio reproduction nearly all the way up to 20 kHz frequencies

EEQ (Easy EQ): The DEH-3400UB is equipped with a 3-band EQ with 6 preset EQ settings: Powerful, Dynamic, Vocal, Natural, Custom, and EQ Flat. The Custom band can be adjusted as follows:

    • Bass: +/- 6dB at 100 Hz
    • Mid: +/- 6dB at 1 kHz
    • Treble: +/- 6dB at 10 kHz

Loudness: The Loudness feature compensates for deficiencies in the low and high sound ranges at low volume. You can set the Loudness feature to Low, Mid, High, or Off.

Source Level Adjustment (SLA): This function lets you adjust the volume level of each source to prevent radical changes in volume when switching between sources. Settings are based on the volume level of the FM tuner, which remains unchanged. Each source can be independently adjusted from -4dB to +4dB.

2.0-Volt Preamp Outputs: The Pioneer DEH-3400UB features two pairs of 2.0-volt preamp outputs. The unit's rear preamp output can be configured as a fading rear-channel output or a non-fading subwoofer output with a low-pass filter, phase adjustment, and output level control. When configured as the subwoofer output, you can select the frequency of the 18dB/octave low pass filter (50, 63, 80, 100, or 125 Hz), select the subwoofer phase (normal/reverse), and the subwoofer gain (+6 to -24).

Switchable Rear Channel/Subwoofer Speaker Output: The rear speaker outputs can be set to provide full range output with full fading capability, or they can be set to provide non-fading subwoofer (low-pass) output. When the rear speaker outputs are set to subwoofer mode, the rear preamp outputs also switch from full range to subwoofer outputs. When set for subwoofer operation, you can connect the rear speaker leads directly to two small 4-ohm passive subwoofers or a dual voice coil sub with 4-ohm voice coils. If you prefer to use a single 2-ohm subwoofer, you can connect the woofer to one set of speaker leads, leaving the other set of rear leads disconnected. The maximum output provided when a 2-ohm load is connected to one set of leads is 70 watts.

    Disc Playback

Compatible Discs: The Pioneer DEH-3400UB supports playback of CD-Audio, CD-Text, CD-R, and CD-RW discs.

MP3/WMA Playback: This unit can play MP3 and WMA files recorded on CD-R and CD-RW discs in ISO9660 Level 1/Level 2, Joliet, and Romeo formats. File/Track Name List: The Name List feature displays a list of MP3/WMA folders and tracks on a loaded CD or connected USB device, so you can easily access your music. The Name List will also display the list of track titles on a CD Text disc.

Off Insert/Eject: A CD disc can be inserted or ejected with the power off. When a disc is inserted with the power off, the unit will automatically power up and begin playback.

Auto Off Eject: When you eject a disc, the unit will automatically power off (unless you switch sources before ejecting the disc).

Installation Angle: Optimum CD playback performance is obtained when the unit is installed at an angle of less than 60-degrees.

Auxiliary Input: The DEH-3400UB is equipped with a front-panel 3.5mm stereo minijack auxiliary input for connecting external components, such as a portable MP3 player. AUX must be turned on in the setup menu in order to be selected as a source.

    Radio Functions

Supertuner IIID AM/FM Tuner: The Supertuner IIID features Feed Forward Control, which avoids multi-path interference. This pre-detection of interference enables quick filter control and results in less distortion. In addition, the Supertuner IIID creates enhanced stereo during multi-path interference, unlike conventional tuners that collapse to mono. Digital processing reduces distortion, and improves Signal-to-Noise Ratio and stereo separation. Advanced analog technology improves signal processing sensitivity.

RDS: The Radio Data System (RDS) feature displays radio broadcast information such as artist, title, and album when listening to compatible AM/FM stations.

BSM (Best Stations Memory): The BSM (Best Stations Memory) function lets you automatically store the six strongest stations under preset buttons 1-6 of the currently tuned band. The tuner has 3 FM banks and 1 AM bank. You can store 6 presets for each bank giving you a total of 18 FM presets and 6 AM presets.

Local Tuning: Local seek tuning lets you tune in only those radio stations with sufficiently strong signals for good reception. There are 4 levels of sensitivity for FM and two levels for AM. The higher settings allow reception of only the strongest stations, while lower settings let you receive progressively weaker stations.

    Remote Control

Wireless Remote Control: The DEH-3400UB comes with an IR wireless remote control. The remote allows you to control the volume, switch between sources, pause the CD, change the display, and adjust the audio. The mute button allows you to quickly lower the volume by about 90% (function that cannot be performed from the front panel).

Steering Wheel Remote Compatibility: The head unit features an OEM steering wheel remote control input on the rear of the unit that lets you keep your vehicle's factory radio steering wheel remote controls when used with an optional steering wheel audio control adapter (sold separately). Please consult Crutchfield's Outfit My Car to see if your vehicle is compatible.

    Great except for USB software

Overall, I've been really happy with it. The sound quality is great, and the color changing ability is a nice little bonus. The only problem I've found is the USB software. I can't figure out how to change the file organization, so right now I can only listen to the tracks in order of the date they were created. This means, for example, that I can't put albums from the same artist together unless I add them consecutively.

Pros: -Great sound -Good range of input options (CD, Aux, and USB) -Cool colors

    Cons: -Annoying USB organization

    Great value!

I recently replaced the stock factory radio in my 2000 Silverado extended cab. I should have done this years ago when I replaced the speakers. Sound is much better now. The unit was easy to install with the information and part kit provided by Crutchfield. Basically match the wires up, plug in, and go. This was the first time I've done a radio install. I spent about an hour one evening getting the wires connected and laying everything out. Spend another hour the next night pulling trim and installing the unit. Simple as that.

Pros: I like the adjustable color control, clock, and USB port for my iPhone.

Cons: Main control knob is somewhat small for me. I end up going through the menu when all I want to do is adjust the volume. I agree with other users on the demo and instruction manual.

So far I like the Pioneer DEH-3400UB, very much. Ever since it was installed which was one week ago I have only been listening to recorded music on a 32 GB flash drive. I have approximately 500 songs on the flash drive with about 30 GB of room left for more songs. I especially like the ability to turn random selection of songs on and off. The Pioneer DEH 3400UB has great tone, and the controls seem relatively simple to use. I have not attempted to use all the available features of this receiver, and am giving it the benefit of any doubts because I believe that it will meet or exceed all my expectations.

Pros: Looks good, and sounds great!!!

    Cons: None

Great upgrade, very nice quality, I've never had any issues with Pioneer's quality. Some of the options aren't necessary, but they are cool, especially the lighting. Sound quality is enhanced and I love the varied options for AUX/USB/CD/ and so on. Having all in one is excellent!

Pros: Pioneer quality. Enhanced sound. Generally looks cool and performs well.

Cons: HORRIBLE instruction guide, throw it away! To really figure out how to operate it, throw the instructions away and just play with it for a half an hour or so. Also, the demo mode needs to be taken out completely, it's extremely annoying, serves no real purpose and until you figure how to operate it, it just goes and goes and goes. Worst instruction book ever, seriously!

I bought this to replace the aging cassette radio in my 1986 Mustang GT. Crutchfield was right: it's very hard to remove the stock radio! But the Crutchfield connectors and instructions made it easy to install the Pioneer. I like the color choices--I can match the stock red dash lighting. FM sensitivity and selectivity were important to me, and they're pretty good. Amplifier power is a bit underwhelming, and when it runs out of oomph is makes much nastier noises than the stock radio in my 2005 Ranger pickup. My minor gripe is the menu system. I've mostly figured out how to navigate it while driving. The problem is that it's controlled largely by the one big knob, and in a moving car it's hard to make your hand land on the knob precisely. Bump the knob when the car bounces and you're no longer controlling volume, you're in menu-land. Oh shoot, except that's not quite how I say it when it happens. For car service, there's nothing to match old-fashioned dedicated , at least for volume and tuning.

Pros: Like the color choice, FM performance.

Cons: The tiny buttons and knob that can be bumped accidentally. Those would be OK at home or when the car is parked. Under way @ 60 mph, it's a lot harder to deal with the complexities.

Upgraded from the factory CD player in my Subaru Outback to this Pioneer unit and couldn't be happier. I only really wanted a radio that could play MP3's, had an AUX port, and also iPod integration. Overall the interface is great, easy to use, and simple. iPod integration works well. Only downfall I found is that I had got annoyed by the volume knob because it was extremely slippery. I found a rubber tire off an RC car that happened to go on perfectly. It even looks like it came like that.

I replaced my stock Subaru Imprezza Outback Radio with this unit in about 30 minutes. Immediately my car audio was 100 times better. The USB interface is perfect as I can listen to music from my phone and charge it at the same time. No 1/8" audio cable is needed. Once you get the gist of how the controls operate it's easy to customize the settings. I didn't really care about the multicolor LEDs when I ordered but it was fun to match my car's color scheme. Overall, great bang for not many bucks. A real no brainer.

Pros: Clean powerful sound. Easy installation and setup. Easy operation. Inexpensive

I bought this unit while just trying to get a cheap head unit for a jeep that is left open during summer. I'm very impressed with how well it works for how much I paid.

Pros: -I love the ability to choose between 27 display colors, it allowed me to match all the aftermarket gauges in my truck -I love that it picks up and displays the name of songs, radio stations and artists on the screen -I love that you can choose to control your ipod/iphone with either the head unit or the ipod/iphone itself, it's always much easier controlling it through the ipod/iphone!

Cons: -It doesn't turn on automatically when you turn on your car, you have to turn it on manually

If you are looking for an awesome head unit for a low price and good looks, this is perfect. When I was shopping head units, I did not want anything over the top such as bluetooth, HD, etc. This head unit looks good enough, especially with the different color options. I am very pleased with my purchase, and I totally recommend this head unit. Well done Pioneer, and thank you Crutchfield.

Pros: Great sound, love the color options, USB & Aux hook ups, price

This is my 2nd Pioneer head unit purchased from Crutchfield in so many years. Both were installed in different Subaru Legacy's (99 & 03). Each fit without any modifications to the dash. The added benefit of the master sheet and wiring harness were two of several reasons for choosing Crutchfield. The 3400UB is a great unit for price. The display is only 10 characters (my first unit a DEH-3900MP was 15) and there appears to be, in my opinion, too much emphasis on the 200K+ color patterns. The 3400 does have iPod/iTouch control through the USB port (no more external digital adapter needed, yey). My only other issue is navigating through the menus takes a bit to get use to. This and the over emphasis on the color patterns is the ONLY reason I did not give this all 5 stars. Buy it, you will NOT be disappointed with the benefits vs. cost.

Pros: great sound esp. when using a subwoofer wireless remote feature rich

    Cons: navigating the menus

I did have a problem with the install in my Mustang. Called Crutchfield on a Saturday morning and they fixed it over the phone. Cutchfield is AWSOME.

Pros: Simple to use, general features at a great price, overall great package.

I bought this stereo to install in my 2003 dodge ram 1500. Crutchfield supplies all the nesessary brackets to install it seamlessly. It only took me about three hours to install the head unit and wire an amp. I'm very pleased with the sound quality coming from my stock speakers and my sub. The only thing that bugs me is when my friends try to screw with it, usually they push the main button and screw up some setting. the bass coming from my subwoofer sounds really well (better than some people who use stock head units). Overall I'm very pleased with this head unit and will be buying some pioneer speakers to match in the future

Pros: very simple to use, wide choice of colors, good sound

Cons: the multi-controll button is very easily pushed when someone tries to mess with it.. but thats no reason not to buy it

And as always the sound quality is phenomenal with plenty of EQ options.

I recently installed this HU in my son in laws 1993 Honda Civic EX. I have always been a Pioneer car stereo person as evidenced by the CD /USB HU's I have purchased over the years from Crutchfield. For the money this unit is well worth it. Crutchfield's installation instructions were dead on. One small item I called tech support about was the radio antenna lead. The factory lead wire no matter how you try to reroute it just does not make it to the antennna jack on the Pioneer. This Pioneer replaced a well worn out Sony CD HU and I wound up using the six inch antenna extension from the Sony on the Pioneer. Also because the previously installed Sony was installed by a large chain electronics store that cut the factory wiring harness and did a twist and tape job on the Honda's wiring, Crutchfield's tech support helped me through the maze of different color wires to connect it up. Why these aftermarket installers don't use the wiring harness adapter between the factory wiring harness and the after market HU is beyond me. I always tell people if there is a problem with the installation (or set up for that matter) Crutchfield always has your back.

Pros: Dynamite color changes from display to controls. Endless combination.

    Cons: None.

Purchased this unit because it was just a little bit more than going with an FM transmitter for my ipod. I am amazed at how well it works. I expected to have to do something to get an ipod and iphone to work but its as simple as plugging it in. It automatically starts playing and you can control it through the head unit. No need for special wires either, simply use your standard USB charging cable. The color changing is also amazing. There is a custom option that you can specify RGB values to get exactly the color you want. Install from start to finish took me two hours and was really simple. No issues at all. The sound quality is very good and greatly improved the sound of the factory speakers. The built in EQ settings are pretty good but not the best. You can change each value separately but you really have to know your sound to get it better than any of the presets. Overall for a head unit in this price range this is amazing. Definitely the best features for the money.

Pros: -price -customization -easy iphone and ipod use

Cons: -it has scrolling bars that go across the screen when anything is playing, its a minor thing but it would be nicer if it didn't have it. Its a little techy looking for my taste -illumination has a dimmer but it is still pretty bright.... another minor complaint but I had to try and find some con

I've used aftermarket pioneer car stereos for years. I am impressed at the new features in this model. The USB port is awesome. Loads files quickly and is easy to maneuver through.

Pros: Great sound, great at reading mp3s through the usb port and off of cd disks. This is well worth the money! The multicolor display is nice you can set it bright in the day, and dim it at night.

Cons: It would be nice to have the ability to tie into the illumination line from the car to dim the radio display automatically when the cars' lights on.

Upgraded stock radio from a 2004 hyundai sonata. this is definitely better, as the old radio's volume knob was getting to be useless. Easy to install, nice to have a place to store CDs/MP3 player now that old radio/cassette/cd player is gone!

Pros: Great value for features, including attaching MP3 player and USB powering. Nice to be able to change the colours so it is not so annoying and bright at night.

Cons: Cannot get the Best Station Memory (BSM) to stop hijacking my preset stations; cannot stop the 'light show' from dancing around; but both are minor compared to value.

Just a little background: since I've owned cars, I've probably lived with 5 OE and 15-20 aftermarket stereos. And I have to say I like this unit less than almost all of them.

First the good: the thing works, and does everything the sales literature says it does. Most of my listening is MP3s on a thumb drive, and it seems to access the drive faster than the somewhat-sluggish Sony I have in my other car.

The downsides are mostly things you won't find in the sales literature. For one thing, it has no ability to automatically dim the display when you turn the headlights on - I've never seen a stereo without that feature! Pretty lame. Yes you can dim it via the settings, but I don't want to drill down through several menus every time I want to change the display brightness. Next complaint: the shuffle/repeat settings aren't preserved when you shut off the unit. Turn shuffle and repeat on, cycle the ignition off then on again, shuffle and repeat are now off. That's just stupid, and again different from every other stereo I can remember using. The next/previous track buttons don't honor the shuffle setting - they always go in sequence. Hey guess what folks, I don't always want to listen to songs in the exact same order! The way settings are set is confusing: sometimes you turn the knob to select a parameter and press it to change values, other times it's the reverse. I could go on but I'm about to hit the character limit: bottom line the UI stinks on this thing.

Pros: Works, sounds decent, fairly cheap, accesses thumb drive quickly

Cons: UI design is poor and confusing, no auto display dimming, poorly organized manual, seems cheaply constructed

In general, it's hard to beat the value of these units. They do pretty much what most people could ask of them and they do it well! They are menu driven so there is a learning curve in order to safely change sources, file folders etc without giving too much attention. I am pretty savvy with all forms of technology but still could not figure out how to disable the demo once I accepted it at setup. I finally had to disconnect the battery terminal to reset the unit And disable it during the initial setup nevertheless, these are all minor annoyances compare to the endless joy I get from it.

Pros: Easy installation, reasonable price, great looks, practical GUI with remote (this a big deal) Highly customizable audio and display settings, good quality sound for the money!

Cons: As with most modern car stereos, they are digital menu driven. There isn't much of a way around that but a person can get distracted with the options while driving. This requires memorizing quickly where things are in the Layered menus so that you can use the remote effectively Without looking too much. This true of almost all newer car steroes.

The stock stero in my Honda S2000 was very basic to the point of not even having an AUX port, let along being able to plan an MP3 disc. I got this unit mainly so I could use my iPhone. It has both AUX and USB and iPod controls.

The controls are fairly straight-forward, which is good because I don't want to have to use the remote (does anyone really use a remote in a car?).

The ability to pick your own colors - actually two different colors if you please, is a nice feature that lets it blend in with most cars.

I didn't replace the stock speakers, which aren't really very good, but an S2000 is a small convertable and is quite load, so high fidelity isn't very important. I had thought that sound quality was 99% down to the speakers but I'm sure that the sound is much better with this unit. I have not way to prove this but it does seem that way.

My only complaint is that the display has a feature where the lights kind of dance around the display. I can't figure out how to make them be still.

Pros: Choice of colors. USB and Aux jack on front. Clear controls.

Cons: Can't figure out how to stop the display from dancing around.

As others mentioned getting the hang of the controls takes a bit of trial and error. The only possible downside is the volume knob/Multi Use button is very easy to push is so if you bump it while reaching for the volume you end up going through the menu not controlling the volume, Great sound from the factory speakers. Definitely a good value.

Pros: Great sound. looks good. Nice that you van choose your own display/button colors.

    Cons: Touchy volume/Multi Use knob

This unit has everything you need at a very low price. FM reception is great, just make sure you buy an antenna adapter for your vehicle, Crutchfield will hook you up with that. The USB input works well with my 32gig thumb drive. The cd player reads discs with Mp3's.The ability to change the display and button colors is a nice option, if you don't like the colors it's your own fault, you picked them.Changing things in the menu settings takes some getting used to.The volume knob is also how you access the menu screen, you push it, so if you hit a bounce while you are turning up the volume you end up in the menu screen.

Pros: FM with RDS, USB port, User controled colors.

    Cons: Menu button

Weak FM reception, and the display colors are obnoxious. The days of the Pioneer Super Tuner are over. I have a 1995 truck with an old super tuner in it and it rocks, but this thing has no FM reception capability.

If you like light and color shows, and live in an urban area, this stereo might be for you.

    Pros: Not much for me.

    Cons: Mostly

Very happy with this purchase, installed it today in my son's '97 F150. The entire system - speakers, CD changer, amp and subwoofer- are all Pioneer, and the system sounds great. Very easy to install with Crutchfield's installation kit and wiring harnesses. One of the coolest things about this stereo is that you can change the display color and button colors independently, with tons of different colors. Also nice that the radio station name, artist, and song name displays for the radio and iPod. Would recommend this stereo to anyone.

Pros: Easy to use menu, ability to change display and button colors

    Great color display

OK, I admit it: I'm easily amused. And I certainly was by the display of the DEH-3400UB. First, there's a wide choice of colors available. Second, you can set the control buttons to one color, and the display to another. So, you could have red buttons and green screen characters for the holidays -- just saying. Third, you can have the control buttons cycle through the colors, continually changing hue. Now that's entertainment!

Of course the DEH-3400UB puts out some nice audio, too. I had a chance to check out the receiver playing music from some CDs and my iPod®. Very nice. And even more entertaining than the light show.
