Our take on the Pioneer AVH-4000NEX

by Ken Nail
Pioneer

DVD receivers: They're not just for movies

DVD receivers add a new level of entertainment to your vehicle. You can watch a movie on the screen when you're parked on a Saturday night, or play a DVD through your rear seat video setup on the road. Touchscreen receivers allow you to breeze through menus with the tip of your finger. Most DVD receivers feature a USB input for audio from your iPod, and the ability to add an adapter that allows video to display on the screen. Some receivers even offer connections for a center speaker and a subwoofer, so you can build a full-fledged theater in your car, just like at home.

Next gen

Pioneer's AVH-4000NEX receiver, the flagship of their 2014 DVD receiver lineup, introduces NEX connectivity. NEX stands for "Network Entertainment Experience," and you'll understand why when you see how this receiver combines built-in features and cloud-based services to connect with smartphone and tablet users. Through the familiar controls offered by its high-resolution touchscreen, this Pioneer offers extensive interactivity with your Apple® or Android™ phone, as well as some other cool features.

  • MirrorLink ready: MirrorLink system provides in-dash control over a growing number of Android™ smartphones. You'll enjoy touchscreen control from your Pioneer over music, phone contacts, and select apps — connect your compatible phone via USB and enjoy a seamless experience.
  • AppRadio Mode: You can launch and control compatible iPhone apps from the face of your receiver, putting a variety of music, navigation, social media, and other apps at your command. The AVH-4000NEX includes an HDMI input to offer the latest in connection options with compatible devices — check the "Details" tab for information on what you'll need to spool up AppRadio with your phone. You can see the latest compatible apps here.
  • Siri Eyes Free: With your compatible iPhone, you can take advantage of Siri Eyes Free functionality with a touch of the receiver's touchscreen, using your voice to to place calls, select music, hear notification, add reminders — even compose and listen to text messages.
  • Optional satellite radio: Add a SiriusXM tuner and subscription for nationwide access to programming you can't get anywhere else — coast-to-coast reception is a huge plus if you travel constantly. And you'll never have to worry about data charges or coverage.
  • Sound customization: You can adjust the 13-band EQ by swiping your finger on the touchscreen, as well as access powerful features like time alignment and Auto-EQ.

Customizable touchscreen display

You can customize the AVH-4000NEX's display by moving icons around to create customizable shortcuts to your favorite sources and apps. And the variable color choices and backgrounds make it easy to get the look you want in your dash. This Pioneer plays video content in bright, clear detail when you're parked. When you're on the road, you can entertain your passengers by sending a movie from the receiver to a rear-seat screen. Best of all, dual-zone audio lets you listen to a different source in the front while the movie plays in the rear. And of course you can plug in a rear-view camera to play it safe in crowded parking lots.

Even cooler, this NEX receiver will display album art from the satellite feed. If you're a fan of streaming Internet radio, you can take charge of your Pandora® account from the touchscreen, complete with thumbs-up and thumbs-down controls.

    Touchscreen Display

Motorized 6.95" LCD Touchscreen: The Pioneer AVH-4000NEX features a 6.95" TFT Active Matrix, 16:9 widescreen touchscreen display. The resolution of the display is 800 x 480 (RGB), for a total of 1,152,000 pixels. The touchscreen display allows you to control this unit and a paired Bluetooth device, or a connected component such as your iPod/iPhone, Android smartphone, or USB mass storage class device. Menus appear on screen for making function choices, audio adjustments, and setting up the system. The unit's touchscreen display is motorized. The 6.95" touchscreen display electronically slides down to load and eject your DVD/CD discs. The angle of the motorized touchscreen display can also be adjusted to five different positions to meet your viewing needs in the car.

    • Favorites: You can register the desired menu items on the AVH-4000NEX's "Favorites" menu screen. Registering your favorite menu items allows you to quickly jump to the registered menu item by a simple touch on the favorites menu. Up to 12 menu items can be registered as a "Favorite".
    • OSD + Backgrounds: The color of the on-screen display can be set to red, amber, green, blue or white. The background display can be selected from 8 different preset displays for the AV Operation screen and 5 different preset displays for the Top Menu screen. In addition, you can change the background display to other images imported from an external USB or SD/SDHC device.
    • Widescreen Modes: You can choose from the following widescreen modes when playing back video - Full (4:3 picture is enlarged in the horizontal direction only; enabling you to enjoy a 4:3 picture without any omissions), Zoom (4:3 picture is enlarged in the same proportion both vertically and horizontally; ideal for a 16:9 screen), Normal (4:3 picture is displayed as it is).
    • Picture Adjustments: You can store numerous video settings for the head unit's video source and rear-view camera; including brightness (adjusts the black intensity), contrast (adjusts contrast) color (adjusts color saturation), temperature (adjust the color temperature), and Dimmer (adjusts brightness).
    • Dimmer: To prevent the display from being too bright at night, the display is automatically dimmed when the car's headlights are turned on. The automatic dimmer function only works when the orange/white illumination wire in the wiring harness is connected to the vehicle's headlight circuit.
Note: The unit offers English, Chinese, French, Portuguese, and Spanish text.

Detachable Face Security: The Pioneer AVH-4000NEX's 6.95" touchscreen monitor can be detached from the chassis to deter theft (soft carrying case included). You can also enter a 5 to 16 character password that must be entered if the head unit is disconnected from power.

Front-Panel Control w/ Custom Illumination: In addition to the touchscreen controls, the unit includes frequently used buttons along the bottom edge of the screen. The color of the button illumination can be set to red, amber, green, blue, white, or scan (constantly cycling through the color spectrum). You can also create a custom color to match your vehicle's interior lighting (112 colors to choose from).

MIXTRAX Illumination: MIXTRAX features a club-style illumination that enhances the mood with a dynamic dance club-like lighting effect. As MIXTRAX begins, lights start pulsing to the beat of the music, adding an extra level of entertainment. You can choose among twelve patterns of lighting variations from sound pressure level or low-pass synchronization modes. The lighting effects work like a spectrum analyzer, reaching peak colors based on the intensity of the music.

Parking Brake Interlock: This unit has a parking brake interlock system that prohibits viewing of video programming and operating certain controls when the vehicle is in motion. In order to watch video on the in-dash monitor, the vehicle must be stopped with the parking brake engaged. The head unit's light green wire must be connected to your vehicle's parking brake detection circuit. The head unit's touchscreen will display "Attention! Viewing of front seat video source while driving is strictly prohibited", if you try to watch a video when your vehicle is in motion.

2-DIN Chassis: The Pioneer AVH-4000NEX has a 2-DIN chassis (also known as "Double-DIN"), and will fit in many vehicles with a large dash opening. The unit can be ISO-mounted using factory brackets. There is also an optional double-DIN sleeve (130ADTV133, sold separately) available for this unit that will allow you to Euro-mount or custom mount the Pioneer head unit in your vehicle. As always, please consult Crutchfield's Outfit My Car to verify fit with your vehicle.

    Built-in Bluetooth

Bluetooth Technology (powered by Parrot): The AVH-4000NEX is equipped with built-in Bluetooth ver. 3.0 (powered by Parrot), allowing you to make and receive phone calls wirelessly through the receiver; as well as stream music wirelessly from your smartphone to the head unit. In order to use Bluetooth wireless technology, your phone must also be Bluetooth compatible and be able to interpret certain profiles. This unit is compatible with the following Bluetooth Profiles:

    • Hands-Free Communication: HFP 1.6 (Hands Free Profile), OPP 1.1 (Object Push Profile), PBAB 1.0 (Phone Book Access Profile).
    • Audio Streaming: A2DP 1.3 (Advanced Audio Distribution Profile), AVRCP 1.4 (Audio/Video Remote Control Profile).
Note: Due to the differences in Bluetooth technology, some Bluetooth enabled devices may be incompatible, function improperly, or may not support all features when used with the Pioneer AVH-4000NEX.

SPP (Secure Simple Pairing): With Secure Simple Pairing (SSP), you can easily pair a Bluetooth enabled phone to the AVH-4000NEX without having to enter pin codes or go through complicated settings. When a registered Bluetooth device is in close proximity to the receiver, the auto connection function automatically pairs the two units. Up to 3 Bluetooth-compatible devices can be registered to this head unit; only one device can be used at a time.

Hands-Free Communication (w/ External Mic): The AVH-4000NEX supports wireless hands-free communication (HFP/OPP/PBAB) for your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone. Thanks to the latest Hands-Free Profile (HFP 1.6) with wideband speech capability, the AVH-4000NEX provides more natural sound quality and details during wireless calls. The head unit will display the caller's information and an audible ring tone will be heard through your vehicle's speaker during an incoming call. You can manually answer an incoming call or have the unit automatically answer the call. The AVH-4000NEX allows you to carry on a phone conversation from your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone using the head unit's external microphone and your car audio speakers. During a conversation you can adjust the volume, as well as switch between the Private Mode (talking directly on your cell phone) and the Hands Free Mode. Using the AVH-4000NEX, you can dial a phone number in one of the following ways:

    • Entering a Phone Number: You can make a call by entering the phone number using the head unit's touchscreen keypad (0-9, *, #, +, C).
    • Speed (Preset) Dialing: You can easily store up to six phone numbers as presets for speed dialing.
    • Phone Book (w/ alphabet search): The phone book (up to 800 contacts) in your Bluetooth enabled cellular phone will be transferred automatically when the phone is paired to this unit. After finding the number you want to call in the phone book from the head unit, you can select the entry and make the call. If a lot of numbers are registered in the phone book, you can search for a phone number by the contact person's name alphabetically (A-Z).
    • Call Log: The 80 most recent calls dialed, received, and missed are stored in memory. You can browse them and call numbers from these lists.
Note: Advanced phone operations that require attention, such as dialing numbers on the touchscreen monitor or adjusting Bluetooth settings, are prohibited while driving. The vehicle's parking brake must be engaged to access these functions.

Wireless Audio Streaming (w/ Advanced Music Navigation): The Pioneer AVH-4000NEX also supports wireless audio playback (AD2P) and control (AVRCP) of a Bluetooth enabled audio player or smartphone. The head unit can stream music stored on your Bluetooth enabled device or music apps you have downloaded on your device. In addition to basic playback functions (Play/Pause, FF/RW, Skip, Random/Repeat), the AVH-4000NEX lets you browse your stored music by Playlist, Artist, Album, Song, etc.. (AVRCP 1.4 phones only). The head unit will also display your music's song information; such as Artist name and Song/Album title. (app must also support). When an incoming call or outgoing call is in progress from your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone, audio streaming will be paused so you can take your call.

Siri Eyes-Free Control: When paired and connected with an iPhone 4S or 5/5C/5S (iOS 6.1+) via Bluetooth, the Pioneer AVH-4000NEX has the ability to access Siri through its touchscreen and external microphone for "Siri Eyes-Free" functionality. When activated, Siri voice prompts play through the vehicle's speakers and the user's commands and questions are received and transmitted to the receiver using the external microphone. Siri Eyes-Free provides access to many iPhone 4S/5/5C/5S functions such as music selection, making phone calls, and audible navigation (map will be displayed on iPhone); as well as listening to text messages, calendar information, and reminders. The head unit's touchscreen monitor will only indicate hands-free calling and song/artist information (all other functions of Siri are only audible through the Pioneer AVH-4000NEX; visual data will still need to be viewed from your iPhone device).

Note: Your iPhone 4S or 5/5C/5S can be connected via Bluetooth and USB simultaneously. You can only access stored music using Siri when the head unit's source is iPod or Bluetooth Audio. All other Siri functions can be accessed from any source. The head unit's audio is muted while Siri provides audible voice prompts.

Dual USB Ports: The unit's two rear-panel USB (type-A) ports and 58" USB extension cable allows you to connect USB Mass Storage Class (MSC) or USB Media Transfer Protocol (MTP) compliant devices; such as your Android smartphone, portable digital audio player, or USB thumbdrive. The USB port enables playback & control of music, video, and photo files stored on your portable USB MSC device and music only on your USB MTP device through the Pioneer AVH-4000NEX. Simply use Pioneer's dock connector-to-USB cable (130CDIU51, sold separately) or the dock connector-to-USB cable that comes with your Apple device if you desire stored music and music app playback only.
Note: The head unit's USB connection provides 1.6A of current to power and charge your connected iPod/iPhone when your vehicle's ignition switch is set to the 'ACC' or 'On' position. Best of all, HD Radio is 100% subscription free. The unit's tuner also supports analog AM/FM broadcasts.

    • Multicasting: In addition to conventional broadcasts, with HD Radio broadcasting it is possible to choose from up to 3 multicast programs (HD1 to HD3, and analog). There are also data programs for each program.
    • Station Text/Album Art + RDS: AM/FM digital stations can offer text and data such as artist names and song titles. The head unit also supports Album Art from select HD Radio stations. For analog FM stations, the Radio Data System (RDS) feature displays radio broadcast information such as song/artist information when listening to compatible RDS FM stations.

Digital processing reduces distortion, and improves Signal-to-Noise Ratio and stereo separation. Advanced analog technology improves signal processing sensitivity.
    • Reception Blending: If a digital broadcast reception condition gets poor, this unit automatically switches to the analog broadcast of the same frequency level. If this function is set to "On", the tuner switches between digital broadcast and analog broadcast automatically. If this function is 'Off', reception will be conducted within an analog broadcast.
    • BSM (Best Stations Memory): The BSM (Best Stations Memory) function lets you automatically store the six strongest analog or HD stations under preset buttons 1-6 of the currently tuned band. The tuner has 3 FM banks and 1 AM bank. You can store 6 presets for each bank giving you a total of 18 FM presets and 6 AM presets.
    • Local Tuning: Local seek tuning lets you tune in only those radio stations with sufficiently strong signals for good reception. There are 4 level of sensitivity for FM and two levels for AM. The higher settings allow reception of only the strongest stations, while lower settings let you receive progressively weaker stations.
    • iTunes Tagging: It is possible to save the song's information (tag) from a HD Radio or RDS FM broadcasting station to your USB-direct connected iPod/iPhone. The songs will show up in a playlist called "Tagged" in iTunes the next time you sync your iPod/iPhone. Then you can directly buy the songs you want from the iTunes Music Store.

Note: HD Radio is the system for digital AM and FM broadcasting in the U.S. More than 2,000 radio stations are broadcasting their primary signals in digital HD Radio technology, as a free service. Go to www.hdradio.com to check for HD Radio stations in your area.

Internet Radio Apps (for iPhone/Android): The Pioneer AVH-4000NEX allows you to access Pandora online music service, as well as Aha Radio social network service through your USB-connected iPhone (iOS 5.0+) or Bluetooth-connected Android smartphone (2.2+). Your Apple iPhone must be connected to the AVH-4000NEX via the appropriate Pioneer iPod connector cable (CD-IU51 / CD-IU52 / CD-IU201V / CD-IU201S) or the connector-cable that came with your iPhone. Your Android smartphone must support A2DP/AVRCP/SPP Bluetooth profiles and be paired with the Pioneer AVH-4000NEX. Your iPhone or Android smartphone will need an active Data Plan account with connection to the Internet via 3G, EDGE, or WiFi.

    • Pandora App: The free Pandora App (either from iTunes Apps or Google Play) lets you play music from the Pandora music service through the Pioneer AVH-4000NEX using your USB-connected Apple iPhone (iOS 5.0+) or Bluetooth paired Android smartphone (2.2+). The Pioneer AVH-4000NeX provides control over the Pandora music service and displays Artist, Album, and Song information. You can select Pandora stations from your Station or Genre List and sort them by date or alphabetically (A-Z). New stations can be created based on the current songs or artists playing. You can also skip song tracks within a station. You can even give songs a thumbs up or thumbs down. An active Pandora account is required.
    • Aha Radio: Aha Radio provides you with up to the minute content made available from the convenience of Pioneer's touchscreen interface. Listen to the latest Facebook updates or Tweets from your friends. Listen to thousands of stations that include internet radio, podcasts, and audiobooks. Receive traffic information, restaurants, and coffee locations personalized to you instantly, safely, and easily. Compatible with USB-connected Apple iOS (5.0+) devices, as well as paired Android (2.2+) devices that support the Bluetooth Serial Port Profile (SPP). Simply download the free Aha Radio app to your iPhone or Android device (from iTunes Apps or Google Play) and connect to the AVH-4000NEX to control your own personalized entertainment experience.

Note: Access to these Internet Radio services will depend on the availability of a cellular and/or WiFi network for purposes of allowing your iPhone or Android smartphone to connect to the Internet. Not supported in Canada and only available in the United States.

SiriusXM Ready: The Pioneer AVH-4000NEX CD receiver is SiriusXM Ready, so you can listen to commercial-free music, all your favorite sports, exclusive talk and entertainment, comedy, news, traffic, weather, and more. Simply connect the SiriusXM Connect Vehicle Tuner (220SXV200, sold separately) to the dedicated SiriusXM port on the rear of the head unit and enjoy satellite radio without additional translators or cables. With the SiriusXM Connect tuner you'll have access to more than 150 channels of exclusive programming directly from SiriusXM, via the "SiriusXM All Access" package (subscription required). Visit SiriusXM.com for a complete list of subscription options and channel guide. Additional features of the SXV200V1 SiriusXM Connect tuner include:

    • Channel/Category Lists: A channel list displays a list of all available channels. The Category Search function searches for channels in a certain category. You can even scan through channels within categories; Category Scan lets you play back six seconds of a live broadcast in the currently selected category.
    • Song/Artist Info + Album Art: Displayed Information such as Channel Name, Artist Name, & Song Title can be viewed on the head unit's LCD touchscreen; as well as Album Art and station logos.
    • Presets + Favorites: You can store up to 18 SiriusXM Satellite Radio Station Presets. Up to 6 of your SiriusXM presets can be identified as Favorites for advanced features such as TuneStart & TuneScan.
    • Tune Start/Scan: TuneStart allows you to choose whether to start a song from the beginning or from its live point when tuning to a Favorite channel. TuneScan plays the first six seconds of each song that has not been listened to from each of the channels which you have saved as Favorites.
    • Instant Replay: Supports the SiriusXM Instant Replay function, so you can pause, rewind, and replay up to 60 minutes of live content from the station you are listening to.
    • Alerts:While listening to SiriusXM Satellite Radio, you can be alerted when your favorite songs, artists, or games involving your favorite sports teams are playing on other channels.
    • iTunes Tagging: The iTunes Tagging feature lets you Tag songs you hear on SiriusXM and stores the info on your iPod/iPhone (connected to your head unit via USB). The next time you connect your iPod/iPhone to iTunes, you will be able to preview your selections and then purchase and download them directly from iTunes.
    • Parental Control: The SiriusXM Parental Control feature allows you to control access to channels that you consider inappropriate for younger listeners. When enabled, The Parental Control feature requires you to enter a 4-digit passcode to tune to the locked channels.
Note: A separate SiriusXM Satellite Radio subscription is required (operates on the XM Network). However, you can easily add this SiriusXM tuner to an existing Sirius or XM account for a Multi-Radio Discount Plan.

    Audio Section

24-Bit/96kHz DAC: For superb quality audio playback from DVDs, CDs, and flash media, the Pioneer AVH-4000NEX is equipped with a 24-bit/96kHz digital-to-analog converter.

MOSFET50 Internal Amplifier: This receiver is equipped with a 50 watts x 4 (peak) MOSFET amplifier for low distortion, high power output. The amplifier is strong enough to power small subwoofers to moderate volume levels in compact cars and pickups. For higher volume levels from subwoofers, an optional amplifier may be connected to the preamp outputs.

    • CEA2006 Specs: 14 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20Hz-20kHz, 1% THD-N)
    • Continuous Power Output: 22 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 50Hz-15kHz, 5% THD)
    • Maximum Power Output: 50 watts x 4 channels (or 50 watts x 2 channels at 4 ohms + 70 watts x 1 channel at 2 ohms for subwoofer)
Note: The power specifications for the AVH-4000NEX are compliant with the CEA2006 Mobile Amplifier Power Testing and Measurement standards from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). These standards were developed as a way to equitably compare power specs from model to model and between manufacturers.

4V/6CH Preamp Outputs + Sub Control: The Pioneer AVH-4000NEX features three pair of 4.0-volt preamp outputs (Front/Rear/Subwoofer). The unit's front and rear preamp output can be faded (front/rear), while the subwoofer preamp output is non-fading. The Pioneer AVH-4000NEX lets you adjust the subwoofer preamp output's phase (normal/reverse) and volume (+6 to -24).

Crossovers: The AVH-4000NEX employs high pass and low pass crossovers to tailor the head unit to your connected speakers.

    • HPF: The head unit's 12dB/octave high pass filter only allows frequencies higher than those in the selected range (50, 63, 80, 100, 125, 160, or 200Hz) to your front and rear speakers through the unit's speaker-level or line-level outputs.
    • LPF: The subwoofer preamp output features a 6, 12, or 18dB/octave low pass filter so only frequencies lower than those in the selected range (50, 63, 80, 100, 125, 160, or 200Hz) are output to your connected subwoofer.

EEQ (Easy EQ) w/ 13-Band Graphic EQ: There are seven stored equalizer curves which you can easily recall at any time. You can choose from - Powerful, Natural, Vocal, Super Bass, Flat, Custom 1, or Custom 2. The Custom 1 and Custom 2 EQ modes allow you to manually adjust the level (+/- 12dB) of each band of the head unit's 13-band graphic equalizer (50, 80, 125, 200, 315, 500, 800, 1.25k, 2k, 3.15k, 5k, 8k, and 12.5k Hz).

Auto EQ (Optional): The auto-equalizer automatically measures your car's interior acoustic characteristics, and then creates an auto-equalizer curve base on that information. The Pioneer CD-MC20 Auto-EQ microphone (130CDMC20, sold separately) is required to use this function. The Pioneer CD-MC20 Auto-EQ microphone plugs into your compatible Pioneer A/V receiver's rear-panel AUX 3.5mm input. The Auto-EQ microphone should be placed in the center of your vehicle's driver seat headrest facing forward for EQ measurement.

Audio Settings: The head unit provides further sound adjustments for your car audio system.

    • Listening Position & Time Alignment: For a better sound-stage you can select your optimal listening position. You can choose from All, Front Left, Front Right, or Front. You can also select to manually fine tune the sound stage, using Digital Time Alignment (DTA) by selecting the distance (0-200") for each individual speaker in the vehicle compared to your listening position.
    • Advanced Sound Retriever: The Advanced Sound Retriever automatically enhances compressed audio and restores the original richness of the recording. When the Advanced Sound Retriever is on, the high frequency range is compensated to match the frequency response curve to the original sound. There are two available levels of the Advanced Sound Retriever effect.
    • Source Level Adjustment (SLA): This function lets you adjust the volume level of each source (AM, Pandora, iPod, Apps) to prevent radical changes in volume when switching between sources. Settings are based on the unit's FM volume level, which remains unchanged. Each source can be independently adjusted from -4 dB to +4 dB.

MIXTRAX: Drawing from Pioneer's rich DJ heritage and passion for music, MIXTRAX delivers a unique DJ infused listening experience to listeners in the car. MIXTRAX is an innovative Pioneer technology that creates a non-stop mix of your music library complete with a range of DJ-inspired effects. MIXTRAX takes your typical music listening experience and creates a non-stop mix of your music with 9 random DJ effects and transitions, by removing the breaks and pauses normally introduced between tracks and replacing them with various beats. MIXTRAX is compatible with USB-connected iPhone, iPod, USB MSC device, and select Android devices. There is also a Short Playback option which limits the amount of time each track plays; select from 1, 1.5, 2, 2.5, or 3 minutes.

Note: The MIXTRAX function does not work in App/Media App Control mode or with the Pandora App for iPod/iPhone/iPad. It is also not supported by USB MTP devices.

Key Beep: The in-dash head unit provides an audible beep to confirm button operation; this can be turned On or Off.

    AV Connections

Dual AV Inputs: The Pioneer AVH-4000NEX has dual AV inputs to connect two external audio/video sources. The head unit has a rear-panel 3.5mm minijack AV input for connecting a portable audio/video device. There is also a rear-panel composite video/stereo RCA AV input for connecting a video component such as a mobile TV tuner or game console. The rear-panel 3.5mm minijack input also serves as the A/V input for your USB-connected iPod/iPhone (using the proprietary Pioneer cable).

HDMI Input: In addition to AppRadio mode for iPhone and Android, the head unit's HDMI input can be used to connect almost any external mobile AV source with an HDMI output; such as a TV tuner, Blu-ray player, or game system. The HDMI input will provide video and audio playback. Your vehicle's parking brake will need to be engaged to view video on the receiver's screen. Playback functions will need to be controlled from your HDMI-connected device (not the Pioneer head unit).

AV Output (w/ Dual Zone): The unit features a composite video jack and 3.5mm audio jack to output A/V signals to an optional monitor and headphone system. You can simultaneously enjoy the same or different sources in the front and rear of your vehicle. The unit's A/V output can be set to Mirror, Disc, AV-IN, USB, iPod, or Off. The Mirror mode simply outputs the same audio/video signal which is playing on the head unit's touchscreen monitor to your connected rear monitor/headphone system.

Rear-View Camera Input: The AVH-4000NEX is equipped with a composite video rear-view camera input for the addition of an optional backup camera (130NDBC6, sold separately). When the vehicle's transmission is put in reverse, the screen automatically switches to the rear view camera (violet/white wire of the harness must be connected to the vehicle's reverse lamp circuit for automatic video switching). Automatic video switching takes approximately 0.75 seconds. The unit also provides four on-screen guidelines to assist you when backing up your vehicle. You can even select for the rear-view camera to stay on at all times, so you can keep an eye on the trailer you are towing. Audio from your music source will continue playing, while the back-up camera is displayed.

Navigation Ready: The Pioneer AVH-4000NEX allows you to connect the Pioneer AVIC-U260 add-on navigation unit (130AVIC260, sold separately) through its RGB Input. This versatile hideaway unit allows you to switch to navigation mode with the touch of a button. Get to your destination by inputting an address or search through the POI library while enjoying whatever source is currently playing.

Note: If you are already using the head unit's RGB input to access MirrorLink from your compatible smartphone, then you cannot connect this add-on navigation module (or vise-versa).

    OEM/Remote Control

OEM Integration (Coming Soon): This Pioneer DVD receiver is compatible with the iDatalink Maestro RR (794ADSMRR, sold separately); a web programmable module that will permit the aftermarket Pioneer head unit to work with select Ford, Lincoln, and Mercury vehicles that feature the factory SYNC system; as well as select GM vehicles with factory OnStar; and select Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep vehicles with U-Connect. The iDatalink Maestro RR lets Ford/Lincoln/Mercury, GM. and Dodge/Chrysler owners swap out their factory radio for this aftermarket Pioneer head unit; while retaining the Ford Sync system, GM OnStar system, Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep U-Connect system, steering wheel controls, Bluetooth, USB interface, Satellite Radio, and 911 assist. You also get to keep the hands-free mic that comes with the car (which is specially tuned to that particular vehicle). In some installations, the iDatalink Maestero RR lets you configure the head unit to operate interior climate controls display certain vehicle information.

    • Ford/Lincoln/Mercury: When installed in a compatible Ford/Lincoln/Mercury vehicle, the iDatalink Maestro RR requires the use of the iDatalink Maestro ADS-HRN(SR)-FOR01 installation harness (794HRNSRF1, sold separately) and must also be connected to your Windows PC so it can be flashed with the SR-FOR01-DS2 firmware update.
    • GM: When installed in a compatible GM vehicle, the iDatalink Maestro RR requires the use of the iDatalink Maestro ADS-HRN(SR)-GMS05 installation harness (794HRNGMS5, sold separately) and must also be connected to your Windows PC so it can be flashed with the SR-GMS05-DS firmware update.
    • Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep: When installed in a compatible Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep vehicle, the iDatalink Maestro RR requires the use of the iDatalink Maestro installation harness (794HRNSRC1, sold separately) and must also be connected to your Windows PC and flashed so it can be flashed with the SR-CHR01-DS firmware update.
Note: The Pioneer head unit features an OEM Setup menu that must be configured with your compatible vehicle's factory system before initial operation.

Steering Wheel Remote Compatibility: The head unit features an OEM steering wheel remote control input on the rear of the unit that lets you keep your vehicle's factory radio steering wheel remote controls when used with an optional steering wheel audio control adapter (sold separately). Please consult Crutchfield's Outfit My Car to see if your vehicle is compatible.

Wireless Remote Control: The Pioneer AVH-4000NEX includes an IR remote control (CD-R33) for wireless operation of the multimedia head unit and your connected devices.

    Not ready for primetime

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I lived with this unit for a month. The AutoEQ works great, if you don't use the lousy Pioneer mic. The sound quality of the unit is also great, thus two stars instead of one.

The AppRadio functionality is lousy. I really wonder about the glowing reviews, and if maybe I just received a defective product. In my experience, there is a 50/50 chance the AppRadio app will sync with my iPhone 5. If the app syncs, there is a 50/50 chance the Media Player App will sync and start playing. If all this doesn't work, or if one step fails, you will have to kill all the apps on your phone, and then reset the HDMI/Bluetooth connection on the headunit. All-in-all, IF it works 100%, you will hear music after about a minute.

Oh, and that music will only be coming from a streaming app (Pandora, iHeart, etc.), the HD Radio tuner, or the Media Player App. Don't expect to be able to use the second USB port to control an iPod Classic/Nano/Touch. Nope, Pioneer couldn't figure out how to make that one happen.

A few more positives, to show that I'm not being completely unreasonable: the menus are good looking and intuitive. There is generally very little/no lag in switching menus or searching for songs on the iPhone. The Siri Eyes Free dialing works well, and the Bluetooth speakerphone is also top-notch. Waze integration in the AppRadio mode never failed, and was AWESOME!!

My main gripe is with the cludgy AppRadio mode, and since that is the sole reason I bought this unit, I must send it back.
    Pros:
    - Sound Quality - Waze interface/function - Menus are fast, very little lag
    Cons:
    - AppRadio interface/function - Only one USB port can be used if you are using the unit in AppRadio mode

This was the receiver I chose when I returned a Kenwood I didn't like. This head unit blew me away! It's sound quality is amazing in comparison. The 7" screen is big enough and the layout is perfect. Touch controls are good, all features work awesome. I really can't say enough good things about this receiver.
    Pros:
Easy to use Any feature you could want Great sound and power Hdmi! Expandability

    Looks great, works very well

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Overall I really like this unit. It has a ton of functionality-possibly too much for most people-and looks great. I like how customizable the interface is, it makes it rather easy to incorporate into your vehicle.

Most of the time, playing your sources is super easy: plugged-in devices will continue where they left off, Bluetooth is a little spottier, but if it connects, it will resume, too.

I so far haven't found a way to play normal "aux"-input music. It assumes it's a video playback source, and will only play with the handbrake on. Not a major issue, but I wouldn't have bothered running an AUX input cable if I had known.

NOTE: If you have a Chrylser/Jeep/Dodge vehicle with the Boston Acoustics premium audio, you probably have a factory amp. This amp *only* accepts L/R input over the "rear" channels on the harness. The Pioneer, on the other hand, *only* outputs phone calls over the *front* channels. You'll need to wire the front speakers from the radio to the rear speakers of the car (and disable the rear channels on the radio), or phone calls will not work!
    Pros:
    - Looks great - Highly customizable interface - Sounds great - Fantastic control over just about everything - Tons of inputs
    Cons:
    - A little overwhelming to do certain tasks - Interface is a bit cluttered: I'd rather not have the quick-list for switching inputs, or the genre for music. - Bluetooth is spotty on connecting (to my iPhone 5) - If you have a device plugged in, you *cannot* use Bluetooth audio. This is a hassle if you want to charge one device but listen to a different one. - Video-capable inputs won't work when the handbrake is not set, even if you *don't* have video playing.

It is on the expensive side, but it is expected from a new to market product. It is easy to operate, it looks amazing, and it works seamlessly. I love that it has so many adjustments for sound and screen/buttons color that I am able to exactly match my car's dashboard lighting scheme for an OEM look. I installed it along with all new speakers, tweeters, and amplifier. The sound is amazing. Now I am just waiting for the Apple CarPlay software update to get a lot more from it.

Amazing stereo, great value. The few issues I have with it is the screen scratches incredibly easy. rear view video is extremely laggy, down to a few frames a second at times. The appradio I had before this had no rear view video lag so I know its not an issue with the camera. Some times the receiver takes a few seconds to respond to a touch input, this can be very frustrating. Overall a great dvd in dash receiver for the price.
    Pros:
Will support Apples new Car Play, My 500gb external hard drive works with it.
    Cons:
laggy reverse camera video input, Laggy touch input at times, screen scratches easy.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

So I was in the market for a new radio, after reading many reviews on many models I enlisted the help of one of their advisors, the end result was the purchase of the AVH-4000NEX (thank you Chance for your help) I installed the unit myself, the instructions were pretty clear, however I did have to monkey around with the Metra bracket as the fit was not optimal and created a slight interference on the display which became evident once I tried to access the DVD slot. The rest of the installation in my Ford 500 went pretty good. I connected USB cables to both ports, one of which I routed in to the glove compartment and the other had a permanent install inside the center console with the use of PAC-USBCBL. The mic was also connected and routed behind trim and liner to come out on the side of the dome light trim. I also purchased a Rydeen Duo backup cam (sorry guys) and installed it, this was a perfect fit to mount underneath my trunk handle. As far as the wiring for the parking brake is concerned I went ahead and invested $20 to get that taken care of. An adapter for the steering wheel controls was needed and the Crutchfield team had recommended the PAC-SWI-RC. This adapter comes with a ton of paperwork........make it easy on yourself, go to the PAC website and you can view specific instructions for your vehicle and print them out. I read reviews of folks struggling setting these adapters up, just make sure you follow the instructions step by step, it worked the first time....
    Pros:
Lots of features, I still have an iPhone 4 and so far the Bluetooth connectivity seems to be good and I am able to browse playlists and everything from the HU. Song information is also displayed nicely. Phone book and hands free calling works great, DVD works great, looks fantastic - very clean design. Car play feature that is upcoming played a role in my decision as well. Sound quality to me seems fine, still need to play with the EQ a little bit. I may expand features in the future (GPS).
    Cons:
Still not 100% happy with the fit of the Metra adapter, but as far as the radio itself I have not found any cons yet......it was well worth the investment.

    Great Head Unit!

Written By BrainKing, Allentown PA on Thursday, May 22, 2014
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The process of installing this in my Porsche was complex and pricey, requiring 2 new Rockford Fosgate amps among other modifications. The sound quality through original Porsche speakers is great. The bluetooth and satellite radio work well, including Siri Hands Free. AppRadio is still problematical, but I'm hopeful for Apple CarPlay firmware upgrade.
    Pros:
Customizable screen, touch screen responsive, great sound quality.
    Cons:
Pricey, still not sure how well the Apple CarPlay will work out.

    Pioneer AVH-4000NEX

Written By Travis, Fayette, Mississippi on Saturday, May 17, 2014
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I replaced my pioneer Avh 8400 with this unit & I was looking for equal or better sound performance. I must say that I am very unhappy with the overall sound. It says it's a 4-volt output but it really don't sound like it. All I done was replace radio & the subs and inside speaker don't sound the same. I'm running JL Audio 500/1 class D mono block with 2 JL Audio 10 inch WO-3 in a down fire pro box which was slamming with my AVH 8400 in a 09 crew cab Sierra now I had to bump the gain up. I will have to add an amp to the 4000 NEX for inside speakers to get the sound quality that I had with the 8400 with no amp.
    Pros:
Looks good and it's a cool unit
    Cons:
No loudness button or control, no bass booster , sound quality does not compare to the AVH 8400

    Awesome HU

Written By Garrett P., Long Island NY on Tuesday, April 15, 2014

I just installed this HU my self in a 08 tundra. Install was easy and went smooth I have to say get a diybypass the old school way didn't work for me. I also added xm and backup cam but have not yet tested the app radio part because I didn't see in the book until after I installed that a hdmi and adapter was needed. Bluetooth works great with Spotify and I only gave 4 stars for the lack of info about app radio and not being supplied with a hdmi cable for the money I paid for the unit.
    Pros:
    Everything...
    Cons:
They didn't mention that you need to get a hdmi cable and an adapter for mirror link

    Very versatile unit

Written By Nicholas W., La Mirada, CA on Tuesday, March 25, 2014

I recently got this unit installed in my 2004 Ford Ranger. I thought this would be a great way to bring current technology (Bluetooth, DVD, HD radio, XM) to my vehicle. It has been absolutely fantastic. I installed a backup camera as well, and the optional XM tuner. One of the features of this unit that stands out is that you can browse your music library when Bluetooth streaming. It also has the features of Appradio. If you are trying to decide between the Appradio and this unit, I strongly suggest you consider this one. You will have the best of both worlds, as this will function as a standalone unit or s an appradio when your phone is plugged in.
    Pros:
Clear bluetooth calling, streaming. Screen is bright and crisp, and has different angles. Screen is removable. Fantastic sound quality.
    Cons:
Extra cables needed for Appradio mode. Price is a little high, but worth the cost. Additional equipment needed if you wish to add Nav or XM.

When the car play update is released how will I be able to update the radio? Is this something easily done? [ JC james  Aug 07, 2014 ]
    2 answers
    • Yes, it is an easy task to accomplish. Once the software update is available on the website, you would download it to a USB stick. Then you would connect the USB stick to USB port one on the back of the HU. As soon as the HU detects the software, it will load it up. I recommend leaving a USB cable attached to USB one port so that you are able to load updates as they become. [ Elgin   Aug 08, 2014 ]
    • James, it'll be as easy as inserting an sd card or USB drive into the USB/SD slot. When the update comes out from the Pioneer electronics website, just install the update onto your device of choosing. Insert your device into the radio, and perform firmware update from the radio. The radio handles the rest. As far as when the firmware update comes out for CarPlay? The website says summer of 2014, well, summer is almost over... [ Bryan   Aug 08, 2014 ]
Will it automatically search for any previously paired BT phones? Or do you manually have to switch between iPhones (for example). If I have 2 phones previously paired, which one will it connect to if they are both within range? [ Kevin  Jul 25, 2014 ]

    • Sorry, but maybe I wasn't clear. The iPod is connected via USB not Bluetooth and is located (hidden) within the glovebox. I would like to be able to play a song, shut the car off, come back to the car, turn the car on and resume playing that same song without having to go search for and select that song from the library or playlist. The unit remembers what the last played song was; this is evident as the display shows that song's information on the display before it then switches to the first song in the library. [ Kevin   Jul 28, 2014 ]
    • We have not received any answers from other customers on your question. I would recommend reaching out to an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. They should be able to help answer your question. [ Greg Staff  Jul 26, 2014 ]
Is it possible to resume iPod playback from the last song played? CD playback does, but iPod playback starts at the beginning of the entire song library upon unit/car powerup. [ Kevin  Jul 25, 2014 ]

    • Kevin, I have not connected an iPod to the receiver yet. I use the blue tooth from my iPhone 5s to connect. Sorry that I was unable to answer your question. [ Daniel   Jul 29, 2014 ]
    • I'm using an iPhone so I'm not sure I can help. It usually resumes where I left off but for some reason my phone occasionally insists on starting in Shuffle mode. When that happens, where it starts is anyone's guess. [ Russell   Jul 28, 2014 ]
    • Using bluetooth audio connection, I go from the gym to my truck and pick up where I left off. Mid song even. That's the closest I've gotten to what you are asking. [ Jim   Jul 25, 2014 ]
For VW CC owners with OEM Back-up camera - will that still function with this headunit? Thanks. [ jefatmem  Jul 21, 2014 ]

    • Hi, I used a non OEM backup camera w this unit, since my car did not have one. However, I believe any camera should work as long as you can get to its cables, u can hook it up to the unit [ Jorge   Jul 23, 2014 ]
    • It uses an RCA input for the reverse camera. If the OEM has that connector, I IMAGINE it would, but that is of course far from a guarantee. [ ERIK   Jul 21, 2014 ]
    • It works flawless in my 2014 Nissan Frontier with the factory back-up camera. So I assume it should work just fine with the factory camera in your VW CC. I had to do some research to find the 2nd OEM harness for my vehicle since it is a 2014 it is not in most data bases yet. Also you must turn on the back-up camera option in the setup menu on the Pioneer otherwise it won't come on when you put the vehicle in reverse. [ Douglas   Jul 21, 2014 ]
Has anyone tried using the 4000NEX to play back video using a USB drive or an SD card? The Pioneer website advertises playback of DivX and WMV video files, and was wondering if plugging in a USB drive would allow it to function as a hard drive with video/media playback. I'm thinking of replacing my current 6-Disc Pioneer HU with this, hoping to get rid of DVD discs all together. [ Alex H.  Jun 28, 2014 ]

    • Yes I've used the SD card to playback movies and music and it works well. I haven't used the USB drive yet. The component doesn't read micro SD with adapter. USB doesn't connect to my android phone but I could connect using the HDMI port and that works well. Hope that this info helps you. [ ALEXANDER   Jul 03, 2014 ]
    • I've played video from a 32G SD card. Works really well. I've used the USB with audio files. Not sure about video from the USB port, though. [ ERIC   Jun 30, 2014 ]

    • Hi Devin, That's awesome. How do you find navigating your 500gb HD with the head unit? pretty easy? Also, are you playing movies, tv shows, or music videos? All of the above? Did you have to convert your video files to DIVX or WMV formats? Thanks, Alex [ Alex H.   Jun 28, 2014 ]
    • It does work, I have a 500 gb hard drive plugged in and playing video files around 5gb each with no issues, other then some long waits will it reads the format. [ Devin   Jun 28, 2014 ]
DOES THIS UNIT NEED A BLUETOOTH UPDATE FOR THE GALAXY S5 , I CANNOT GET IT TO WORK WITH MY S5 ,, WORKS WITH PHONE , NOT WITH AUDIO,, IF IT DOESNT WORK VIA BLUETOOTH WHAT CABLE WILL I NEED FOR USB? [ WILLIAM A  Jun 15, 2014 ]

    • I have Galaxy S4. But the head unit (HU) should work with S5. Make sure BOTH the phone and HU settings are set to enable BOTH phone and media (audio). Also, note that you cannot enable the bluetooth media (audio) at the same time as the HDMI media (audio). It has taken a lot of messing around to learn how to use the HU. Have patience. • It is working fine for me. I have the 4000nex in a 2013 Silverado and I am using the I data link maestro to keep steering wheel controls. I did not have to run any updates on my galaxy S5...still waiting on the mirrorlink news like everyone else. [ James   Jun 18, 2014 ]
    • No. My Pioneer AVH-4000NEX unit was able to play audio from a Pandora app on my Galaxy S5 via Bluetooth without any problems the first time I tried, updates necessary. Phone audio works as well, as you noted. [ TIMOTHY A   Jun 17, 2014 ]
    • I have an I phone but I had to purchase a pioneer hdmi cable and an apple adapter to make it work [ JAMES   Jun 17, 2014 ]
    • And yes it does connect for phone , will not reconnect for audio after shutdown ,, very weird but it has something to do with android 4.2.2 [ WILLIAM A   Jun 17, 2014 ]
    • I use my unit w an iphone, so idk about the galaxy. That said, bluetooth should work regardless of which phone it is, i believe. [ Jorge   Jun 16, 2014 ]
    • Can you be more specific? Can you get it to connect with Bluetooth at all? Can you make and send phone calls? Are you having a problem with the Pandora app on the radio? My wife has an S5 that I can use to mess with. I currently use an HTC ONE and it work fine. [ DOUGLASS J   Jun 16, 2014 ]
    • I didn't have to do an update to get mine to work but I did have to get into the settings on BOTH the S5 and the AVH-4000NEX to get it working. I think they make it simpler for the Iphone. [ Kevin   Jun 16, 2014 ]
    • I don't have an S5 but as it's a very new device it should absolutely work. My only guess is that you may need to go into your S5's Bluetooth settings, select the device and see if there are settings for what features are enabled. [ Jeremy   Jun 16, 2014 ]

I have a Samsung Galaxy S4. I am trying to understand the whole mirrorlink before I decide on a HU. I do actually like the 4000NEX. if I add the Pioneer CD-AH200 is this all I need for my phone? Ive seen elsewhere that the S4 may need some other MHL? adapter from Samsung. Do you need the MHL? adapther no matter what as long as u have the S4?? And what gets mirrored with the S4-does it do everything? Say netflix or I use an app called Digitally Imported for my music...can I control the app through the HU the same as I would on the phone? [ Andrew  May 18, 2014 ]

    • Hi Andrew. Sorry to hear that you have an S4. Lol I have an iPhone. So I really couldn't answer your question. I can say that it works great with the iPhone and I can't wait until Pioneer gets the firm wear update to add Apple Car Play to the HU. Good Luck. [ TERRENCE   May 21, 2014 ]
    • You are going to need a micro USB to hdmi cable, but not necessarily the MHL cable from samsung. I bought both, but I only use the other cable. That cable is needed so the phone talks to the HU. However, there is only a small list of apps that work with appradio. You can go to the pioneer website to see which ones are. But something like netflix will absolutely will not work "naturally" in the appradio. And the only apps you can control are the approved ones. There are other ways to do a full mirror/control of your phone. Your phone will have to bee rooted and the appradio app unchained in order to do that. I hope this helps. [ David   May 20, 2014 ]
    • Andrew - Still working everything out as I just started installing the 4000NEX over the weekend. Crutchfield has been very helpful along the way but the information across the board is a bit lacking from Pioneer. I have a Galaxy Note 2 and the CD-AH200 adapter kit. The 4000NEX and the CD-AH200 instructions both show connections to the S4 or Note 2 without the use of a 5-11 pin adapter (I believe that's the MHL piece from Samsung you're referencing). To further confuse the issue the instructions in the AVH-4000NEX show a slightly different set of instructions than the CD-AH200 (the head unit says the HDMI and USB cables should be plugged directly into the head unit; the AH200 instructions want the HDMI cable plugged into the head unit but the included USB power block wired to the ground and switched power) I couldn't get the head unit to recognize the phone in either configuration but the phone would charge both ways. I phoned Crutchfield and they instructed me that I would need a 5-11 pin MHL adapter. In fairness this is mentioned in Crutchfield's item description AND my advisor told me I'd need one before I ordered - I didn't see it mentioned in Pioneers instructions so I decided to soldier on with out it. Long story short I ordered one yesterday and will see how everything works when it arrives. The Samsung part number for the current adapter is EPL-FU10BEGSTA. Via the MHL connection you are able to use the Appradio features, but MirrorLink is only available on a handful of phones (3?) and via Pioneers MirrorLink adapter. Reviews led me to pass on it as it seems it is sensitive to Android firmware versions and not fully sorted at the moment. I can't comment on your other questions at the moment as I'm waiting on the Samsung adapter to arrive but I'll try to follow up with my findings are all of your questions are ones I couldn't find answers to before ordering. As with every other purchase I've made Crutchfield's help has done all they can for me. [ Brett   May 19, 2014 ]
    • Yes you need the MHL adaptor from Samsung. Also look into an app called AppRadioUnchained. Its awesome [ GUITZE   May 19, 2014 ]
