Customize your sound

You can make the most of your music with this Pioneer's 13-band EQ. Just swipe your finger on the touchscreen to dial in the curve that brings out tones you're looking for. And you'll find digital time alignment, Auto-EQ, and other powerful tools for compensating for your vehicle's acoustics.

iDatalink Maestro lets you keep your car's factory extras

If your vehicle comes with factory add-ons like Ford SYNC®, GM OnStar®, Chrysler Uconnect™, or Volkswagen Bluetooth, you don't have to worry about losing your favorite conveniences to get navigation and better sound — the AVH-4100NEX offers compatibility you won't find in many other aftermarket radios, thanks to the iDatalink Maestro module (not included).

  • For Ford SYNC systems, you'll be able to retain voice-controlled features, steering wheel audio controls, and factory audio functions;
  • For GM vehicles, you'll keep your steering wheel audio controls, your factory amp, safety warning chimes, and OnStar, if present;
  • Chrysler owners, you'll get to keep all your Uconnect functionality;
  • VW owners: you'll keep your factory Bluetooth, amplifier and fader, plus the use of the factory media device interface.

Want to keep your car's steering wheel audio controls?

In most cars, you'll need an adapter to retain those controls with this car stereo. Connect a few wires, then  program the adapter for your particular car and radio, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. You'll see the adapters that work with your vehicle when you add this receiver to your cart.

Bluetooth note: Use of this receiver's Bluetooth features will depend upon your phone's Bluetooth capabilities. Learn more in our article explaining Bluetooth profiles.

iPod/smartphone note: If you're going to use your iPod or smartphone with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for compatibility information.

    Touchscreen & Remote Control

Motorized 6.95" LCD Touchscreen: The Pioneer AVH-4100NEX features a 6.95" TFT Active Matrix, 16:9 widescreen touchscreen display. The resolution of the display is 800 x 480 (RGB), for a total of 1,152,000 pixels. The touchscreen display allows you to control this unit and a paired Bluetooth device, or a connected component such as your iPod/iPhone, Android smartphone, or USB mass storage class device. Menus appear on screen for making function choices, audio adjustments, and setting up the system. The unit's touchscreen display is motorized. The 6.95" touchscreen display electronically slides down to load and eject your DVD/CD discs. The angle of the motorized touchscreen display can also be adjusted to five different positions to meet your viewing needs in the car.

    • Favorites: You can register the desired menu items on the AVH-4100NEX's "Favorites" menu screen. Registering your favorite menu items allows you to quickly jump to the registered menu item by a simple touch on the favorites menu. Up to 12 menu items can be registered as a "Favorite".
    • OSD + Backgrounds: The color of the on-screen display can be set to red, amber, green, blue or white. The background display can be selected from 8 different preset displays for the AV Operation screen and 5 different preset displays for the Top Menu screen. In addition, you can change the background display to other images imported from an external USB or SD/SDHC device.
    • Widescreen Modes: You can choose from the following widescreen modes when playing back video - Full (4:3 picture is enlarged in the horizontal direction only; enabling you to enjoy a 4:3 picture without any omissions), Zoom (4:3 picture is enlarged in the same proportion both vertically and horizontally; ideal for a 16:9 screen), Normal (4:3 picture is displayed as it is).
    • Picture Adjustments: You can store numerous video settings for the head unit's video source and rear-view camera; including brightness (adjusts the black intensity), contrast (adjusts contrast) color (adjusts color saturation), temperature (adjust the color temperature), and Dimmer (adjusts brightness).
    • Dimmer: To prevent the display from being too bright at night, the display is automatically dimmed when the car's headlights are turned on. The automatic dimmer function only works when the orange/white illumination wire in the wiring harness is connected to the vehicle's headlight circuit.
Note: This unit has a parking brake interlock system that prohibits viewing of video programming and operating certain controls when the vehicle is in motion. In order to watch video on the in-dash monitor, the vehicle must be stopped with the parking brake engaged. The head unit's light green wire must be connected to your vehicle's parking brake detection circuit. The head unit's touchscreen will display "Attention! Viewing of front seat video source while driving is strictly prohibited", if you try to watch a video when your vehicle is in motion.

Detachable Face Security: The Pioneer AVH-4100NEX's 6.95" touchscreen monitor can be detached from the chassis to deter theft (soft carrying case included). You can also enter a 5 to 16 character password that must be entered if the head unit is disconnected from power.

Variable Illumination: The AVH-4100NEX offers custom illumination for the front-panel controls so you can match your vehicle's interior, plus MIXTRAX Illumination for DJ-style illumination in your vehicle.

    • Front-Panel Control w/ Custom Illumination: In addition to the touchscreen controls, the unit includes frequently used buttons along the bottom edge of the screen. The color of the button illumination can be set to red, amber, green, blue, white, or scan (constantly cycling through the color spectrum). You can also create a custom color to match your vehicle's interior lighting (112 colors to choose from).
    • MIXTRAX Illumination: MIXTRAX features a club-style illumination that enhances the mood with a dynamic dance club-like lighting effect. As MIXTRAX begins, lights start pulsing to the beat of the music, adding an extra level of entertainment. You can choose among twelve patterns of lighting variations from sound pressure level or low-pass synchronization modes. The lighting effects work like a spectrum analyzer, reaching peak colors based on the intensity of the music.

Remote Control: The Pioneer AVH-4100NEX receiver comes with an IR wireless remote control, plus support for factory steering wheel control (adapter sold separately).

    • Wireless Remote Control: The Pioneer AVH-4100NEX includes an IR remote control (CD-R33) for wireless operation of the multimedia head unit and your connected devices.
    • Steering Wheel Remote Compatibility: The head unit features an OEM steering wheel remote control input on the rear of the unit that lets you keep your vehicle's factory radio steering wheel remote controls when used with an optional steering wheel audio control adapter (sold separately).

2-DIN Chassis: The Pioneer AVH-4100NEX has a 2-DIN chassis (also known as "Double-DIN"), and will fit in many vehicles with a large dash opening. The unit can be ISO-mounted using factory brackets. There is also an optional double-DIN sleeve (130ADTV133, sold separately) available for this unit that will allow you to Euro-mount or custom mount the Pioneer head unit in your vehicle.

    Built-in Bluetooth

Bluetooth Technology (Powered by Parrot): The AVH-4100NEX is equipped with built-in Bluetooth (3.0+EDR), allowing you to make and receive phone calls wirelessly through the receiver; as well as stream music wirelessly from your smartphone to the head unit. In order to use Bluetooth wireless technology, your phone must also be Bluetooth compatible and be able to interpret certain profiles. This unit is compatible with the following Bluetooth Profiles:

    • Hands-Free Communication: HFP 1.6 (Hands Free Profile), OPP 1.1 (Object Push Profile), PBAB 1.0 (Phone Book Access Profile).
    • Audio Streaming: A2DP 1.3 (Advanced Audio Distribution Profile), AVRCP 1.4 (Audio/Video Remote Control Profile).
Note: Due to the differences in Bluetooth technology, some Bluetooth enabled devices may be incompatible, function improperly, or may not support all features when used with the Pioneer AVH-4100NEX.

SPP (Secure Simple Pairing): With Secure Simple Pairing (SSP), you can easily pair a Bluetooth enabled phone to the AVH-4100NEX without having to enter pin codes or go through complicated settings. When a registered Bluetooth device is in close proximity to the receiver, the auto connection function automatically pairs the two units. Up to 3 Bluetooth-compatible devices can be registered to this head unit; only one device can be used at a time.

Hands-Free Communication (w/ External Mic): The AVH-4100NEX supports wireless hands-free communication (HFP/OPP/PBAB) for your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone. Thanks to the latest Hands-Free Profile (HFP 1.6) with wideband speech capability, the AVH-4100NEX provides more natural sound quality and details during wireless calls. The head unit will display the caller's information and an audible ring tone will be heard through your vehicle's speaker during an incoming call. You can manually answer an incoming call or have the unit automatically answer the call. The AVH-4100NEX allows you to carry on a phone conversation from your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone using the head unit's external microphone and your car audio speakers. During a conversation you can adjust the volume, as well as switch between the Private Mode (talking directly on your cell phone) and the Hands Free Mode. Using the AVH-4100NEX, you can dial a phone number in one of the following ways:

    • Direct Dialing: You can make a call by entering the phone number using the head unit's touchscreen keypad (0-9, *, #, +, C).
    • Preset Dialing: You can easily store up to six phone numbers as presets for speed dialing.
    • Phone Book (ABC search): The phone book (up to 800 contacts) in your Bluetooth enabled cellular phone will be transferred automatically when the phone is paired to this unit. After finding the number you want to call in the phone book from the head unit, you can select the entry and make the call. If a lot of numbers are registered in the phone book, you can search for a phone number by the contact person's name alphabetically (A-Z).
    • Call Log: The 80 most recent calls dialed, received, and missed are stored in memory. You can browse them and call numbers from these lists.
    • Voice Dialing (Siri & Google Voice): When paired and connected with an iPhone 4S or later via Bluetooth, the Pioneer head unit has the ability to access Siri through its touchscreen controls and external microphone. It also supports Google Voice for select Android smartphones (not compatible with Samsung "S Voice"). You'll be able to dial a phone number or contact via voice command.
Note: Advanced phone operations that require attention, such as dialing numbers on the touchscreen monitor or adjusting Bluetooth settings, are prohibited while driving. The vehicle's parking brake must be engaged to access these functions.

Wireless Audio Streaming (w/ Advanced Music Navigation): The Pioneer AVH-4100NEX also supports wireless audio playback (AD2P) and control (AVRCP) of a Bluetooth enabled audio player or smartphone. The head unit can stream music stored on your Bluetooth enabled device or music apps you have downloaded on your device. In addition to basic playback functions (Play/Pause, FF/RW, Skip, Random/Repeat), the AVH-4100NEX lets you browse your stored music by Playlist, Artist, Album, Song, etc.. (AVRCP 1.4 phones only; which includes Android 4.0+ and iPhone 5.0+). The head unit will also display your stored music and music app's song information; such as Artist name and Song/Album title (app must also support).

Note: When an incoming call or outgoing call is in progress from your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone, audio streaming will be paused so you can take your call. Once the call is finished, your streaming music will resume.

Siri Eyes-Free Control: When paired and connected with an iPhone with Siri (iOS 6.1+) via Bluetooth, the Pioneer AVH-4100NEX has the ability to access Siri through its touchscreen and external microphone for "Siri Eyes-Free" functionality. When activated, Siri voice prompts play through the vehicle's speakers and the user's commands and questions are received and transmitted to the receiver using the external microphone. Siri Eyes-Free provides access to many iPhone Siri functions such as music selection, making phone calls, and audible navigation (map will be displayed on iPhone); as well as listening to text messages, calendar information, and reminders.

Note: The head unit's touchscreen monitor will only indicate hands-free calling and song/artist information (all other functions of Siri are only audible through the Pioneer AVH-4100NEX; visual data will still need to be viewed from your iPhone device).
    CarPlay + Android Auto

Apple CarPlay Compatible: Apple CarPlay is integrated into this Pioneer NEX-series head unit. Apple CarPlay is compatible with Apple iPhone with Lightning-connector (iOS 7.1+). Your iPhone must be connected to the NEX-series head unit via the Lightning-cable that came with your Apple device or Pioneer's CD-IU52 Lightning Cable (sold separately). CarPlay features Siri voice control and is specially designed for driving scenarios. It also works with the Pioneer head unit's touchscreen controls.

    • Maps: The power and simplicity of Apple Maps comes to your dashboard; complete with turn-by-turn direction, traffic conditions, and estimated travel time. You can enter a new destination or choose a favorite or recent destination using the head unit's touchsrceen or by simply asking Siri. CarPlay can also predict where you most likely want to go using addresses from your email, text messages, contacts, and calendars.
    • Phone & Messages: You'll be able to make calls, return missed calls, and listen to voicemails through the Pioneer head unit. Siri can also help you do all these things. In addition, Siri can send, read, and reply to your text messages for you; so you never have to look at your iPhone while driving.
    • Music Library: Access your artists, song, playlists, and iTunes Radio on your iPhone using the Pioneer head unit's touchscreen. Or, just tell Siri what you'd like to listen to. The head unit's touchscreen will display song/artist information, as well as album art in the backgroun.
    • Apps: CarPlay also supports additional audio apps that you've downloaded to your iPhone for enjoying podcasts, music, and radio. Control them from the head unit's touchscreen just like you would from your iPhone. Current supported apps include Pandora, Spotify, iHeart Radio, and Podcasts (more supported Apps coming soon).
Note: If you need an additional USB extension cable, use Pioneer's CD-MU200 cable (130CDMU200, sold separately). For Car Play, you will only use the CD-MU200's 58" USB extension cable and not the included 19" micro-to-USB cable. The 19" micro-to-USB cable can be used for Android Auto if you also have an Android OS device. Any other USB extension cable can cause CarPlay or Android Auto to malfunction.

Android Auto: The Pioneer NEX receiver supports the Android Auto app for Android smartphones running OS Lollipop (5.0 or newer); firmware update will be required. Your compatible Android smartphone must be connected to the NEX receiver's USB-2 port via Pioneer's CD-MU200 cable (130CDMU200, sold separately) or the microUSB-to-USB cable that came with your smartphone, plus be paired via Bluetooth (your vehicle's parking brake needs to be engaged to initially setup Android Auto). Android Auto extends the Android platform into your car in a way that's purpose-built for driving and automatically brings you useful information and organizes it into simple on-screen "card-style" pop-ups that appear just when they're needed. It's designed to minimize distraction so you can stay focused on the road ahead. Learn more at support.google.com/androidauto and to see what phones are compatible. Features of Android Auto include:

    • Google Speech Technology: The Pioneer NEX receiver enhances your Android Auto experience even more by incorporating Google's Speech Technology using the head unit's external microphone and your car speakers for voice command and text-to-speech, which makes using Android Auto and all of its integrated applications fast, easy, and safe. You will need to press the on-screen "mic" icon to activate Google Speech.
    • Maps: Use Google Maps to get where you're going with on-screen maps, voice-guided navigation, live traffic information, lane guidance, and more. Select your destination by using the head unit's touchscreen or just say where you want to go through the unit's external mic and Google Speech Technology.
    • Phone & SMS: With Android Auto you get access to your contacts and messages through the Pioneer NEX receiver while keeping your eyes on the road. Use the unit's external mic and Google Speech Technology to make a phone call, or have your text-messages read aloud to you while you concentrate on the road ahead; you can even reply to texts via voice command.
    • Music: Access your Android smartphone's music library through the Pioneer receiver via Google Play Music You'll be able to browse music like you do on your smartphone with song/artist information display and album art. Use the receiver's touchscreen to select songs or just say what song you want to listen to through the head unit's external mic and Google Speech Technology. You also get access to online music and radio stations from Pandora, Spotify, iHeart Radio, & Tune-In. Music apps include song and station browsing, plus song/artist information and album art or station logo.
    Notes:
    • The pre-installed firmware on this Pioneer receiver works automatically with the Google Nexus smartphone. Other Android smartphones may work, but you may not be automatically prompted to install/update Android Auto and other required applications. Therefore, manually downloading and installing from the Google Play Store would be required. Pioneer will soon release a firmware which expands compatibility to a greater number of devices, particularly those that were originally manufactured with an earlier version of Android OS installed (such as 4.4 or earlier). For all devices, restarting the phone is recommended both before and after installing the applications (regardless if the Android Auto app installs automatically or manually). Any Android smartphone device that has been rooted may require a manual installation/update procedure.
    • If you need a USB extension cable, use Pioneer's CD-MU200 cable (130CDMU200, sold separately). Any other USB extension cable can cause Android Auto to malfunction.

Data Plan Required: Your iPhone or Android smartphone will need an active Data Plan account with connection to the Internet via 3G, EDGE, LTE (4G), or WiFi. Access to these online app services will depend on the availability of a cellular and/or WiFi network for purposes of allowing your iPhone or Android smartphone to connect to the Internet. App services may not be available in all regions.

USB Extension Cable Note: Only use the included 58" USB extension cable for CarPlay & Android Auto. Do not use a 3rd party USB extension cable.

Advanced Playback & Search Functions (for USB & SD/SDHC): Advance playback functions include; Music Browsing which lets you browse your USB & SD/SDHC memory device's music library by Artist, Album, Song, or Genre from the head unit in alphabetical order; and Link Play which allows you to play songs related to the currently playing song. Link Play lets the head unit create an album list of the currently playing artist, a song list of the currently playing album, or an album list of the currently playing genre.

    Audio Section

24-Bit/192kHz DAC: For superb quality audio playback from DVDs, CDs, and flash media, the Pioneer AVH-4100NEX is equipped with a 24-bit/192kHz digital-to-analog converter.

MOSFET50 Internal Amplifier: This receiver is equipped with a 50 watts x 4 (peak) MOSFET amplifier for low distortion, high power output. The amplifier is strong enough to power small subwoofers to moderate volume levels in compact cars and pickups. For higher volume levels from subwoofers, an optional amplifier may be connected to the preamp outputs.

    • CEA2006 Specs: 14 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20Hz-20kHz, 1% THD-N)
    • Continuous Power Output: 22 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 50Hz-15kHz, 5% THD)
    • Maximum Power Output: 50 watts x 4 channels (or 50 watts x 2 channels at 4 ohms + 70 watts x 1 channel at 2 ohms for subwoofer)
Note: The power specifications for the AVH-4100NEX are compliant with the CEA2006 Mobile Amplifier Power Testing and Measurement standards from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). These standards were developed as a way to equitably compare power specs from model to model and between manufacturers.

4V/6CH Preamp Outputs + Sub Control: The Pioneer AVH-4100NEX features three pair of 4.0-volt preamp outputs (Front/Rear/Subwoofer). The unit's front and rear preamp output can be faded (front/rear), while the subwoofer preamp output is non-fading. The Pioneer AVH-4100NEX lets you adjust the subwoofer preamp output's phase (normal/reverse) and volume (+6 to -24).

Crossovers: The AVH-4100NEX employs high pass and low pass crossovers to tailor the head unit to your connected speakers.

    • HPF: The head unit's variable 6/12/18db per octave high pass filter only allows frequencies higher than those in the selected range (50, 63, 80, 100, 125, 160, or 200Hz) to your front and rear speakers through the unit's speaker-level or line-level outputs.
    • LPF: The subwoofer preamp output features a 6, 12, or 18dB/octave low pass filter so only frequencies lower than those in the selected range (50, 63, 80, 100, 125, 160, or 200Hz) are output to your connected subwoofer.

EEQ (Easy EQ) w/ 13-Band Graphic EQ: There are seven stored equalizer curves which you can easily recall at any time. You can choose from - Powerful, Natural, Vocal, Super Bass, Flat, Custom 1, or Custom 2. The Custom 1 and Custom 2 EQ modes allow you to manually adjust the level (+/- 12dB) of each band of the head unit's 13-band graphic equalizer (50, 80, 125, 200, 315, 500, 800, 1.25k, 2k, 3.15k, 5k, 8k, and 12.5k Hz).

Auto EQ (Optional): The auto-equalizer automatically measures your car's interior acoustic characteristics, and then creates an auto-equalizer curve base on that information. The Pioneer CD-MC20 Auto-EQ microphone (130CDMC20, sold separately) is required to use this function. The Pioneer CD-MC20 Auto-EQ microphone plugs into your compatible Pioneer A/V receiver's rear-panel AUX 3.5mm input. The Auto-EQ microphone should be placed in the center of your vehicle's driver seat headrest facing forward for EQ measurement.

Audio Settings: The head unit provides further sound adjustments for your car audio system.

    • Listening Position & Time Alignment: For a better sound-stage you can select your optimal listening position. You can choose from All, Front Left, Front Right, or Front. You can also select to manually fine tune the sound stage, using Digital Time Alignment (DTA) by selecting the distance (0-200") for each individual speaker in the vehicle compared to your listening position.
    • Advanced Sound Retriever: The Advanced Sound Retriever automatically enhances compressed audio and restores the original richness of the recording. When the Advanced Sound Retriever is on, the high frequency range is compensated to match the frequency response curve to the original sound. There are two available levels of the Advanced Sound Retriever effect.
    • Source Level Adjustment (SLA): This function lets you adjust the volume level of each source (AM, Pandora, iPod, Apps) to prevent radical changes in volume when switching between sources. Settings are based on the unit's FM volume level, which remains unchanged. Each source can be independently adjusted from -4 dB to +4 dB.

MIXTRAX: Drawing from Pioneer's rich DJ heritage and passion for music, MIXTRAX delivers a unique DJ infused listening experience to listeners in the car. MIXTRAX is an innovative Pioneer technology that creates a non-stop mix of your music library complete with a range of DJ-inspired effects. MIXTRAX takes your typical music listening experience and creates a non-stop mix of your music with 9 random DJ effects and transitions, by removing the breaks and pauses normally introduced between tracks and replacing them with various beats. MIXTRAX is compatible with USB-connected iPhone, iPod, USB MSC device, and select Android devices. There is also a Short Playback option which limits the amount of time each track plays; select from 1, 1.5, 2, 2.5, or 3 minutes.

Note: The MIXTRAX function does not work in AppRadio Control mode, with the Pandora App, for CarPlay, using MirrorLink, or via Android Auto.

Key Beep: The in-dash head unit provides an audible beep to confirm button operation; this can be turned On or Off.

    AV + OEM Connectivity

Dual AV Inputs: The Pioneer AVH-4100NEX has dual AV inputs to connect two external audio/video sources. The head unit has a rear-panel 3.5mm minijack AV input for connecting a portable audio/video device. There is also a rear-panel composite video/stereo RCA AV input for connecting a video component such as a mobile TV tuner or game console.

HDMI Input: In addition to AppRadio mode for iPhone and Android, the head unit's HDMI input can be used to connect almost any external mobile AV source with an HDMI output; such as a TV tuner, Blu-ray player, or game system. The HDMI input will provide video and audio playback. Your vehicle's parking brake will need to be engaged to view video on the receiver's screen. Playback functions will need to be controlled from your HDMI-connected device (not the Pioneer head unit).

AV Output (w/ Dual Zone): The unit features a composite video jack and 3.5mm audio jack to output AV signals to an optional monitor and headphone system. You can simultaneously enjoy the same or different sources in the front and rear of your vehicle. The unit's dual zone AV output can be set to Mirror, Disc, AV-IN, USB, iPod, or Off. The Mirror mode simply outputs the same audio/video signal (not including HDMI) which is playing on the head unit's touchscreen monitor to your connected rear monitor/headphone system.

Rear-View Camera Input: The AVH-4100NEX is equipped with a composite video rear-view camera input for the addition of an optional backup camera (130NDBC6, sold separately). When the vehicle's transmission is put in reverse, the screen automatically switches to the rear view camera (violet/white wire of the harness must be connected to the vehicle's reverse lamp circuit for automatic video switching). Automatic video switching takes approximately 0.75 seconds. Additional rear-view camera features include:

    • Parking Assist Guidelines: The unit also provides four on-screen guidelines to assist you when backing up and parking your vehicle.
    • Trailer Towing: You can even select for the rear-view camera to stay on at all times, so you can keep an eye on the trailer you are towing.
    • Second Camera: In addition, you can turn the unit's AV input into a second camera input for adding a front camera (sold separately).
Note: The rear view camera feature is meant as a back-up aid only; never solely rely on the rear-view camera when backing-up. In addition to using the rear-view camera, always look behind you to make sure everything is clear when backing up your vehicle.

Navigation Ready: The Pioneer AVH-4100NEX allows you to connect the Pioneer AVIC-U260 add-on navigation unit (130AVIC260, sold separately) through its RGB Input. This versatile hideaway unit allows you to switch to navigation mode with the touch of a button. Get to your destination by inputting an address or search through the POI library while enjoying whatever source is currently playing.

OEM Integration (via Firmware Update): The Pioneer in-dash receiver is now compatible with the iDatalink Maestro RR interface module. When the Pioneer receiver is installed into a compatible GM, Ford/Lincoln/Mercury, Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep, or VW vehicle using the iDatalink Maestro RR (794ADSMRR, sold separately) you'll get to keep select factory features that are normally lost when replacing the factory stereo with an aftermarket head unit. Retained factory features include the Ford/Lincoln/Mercury Sync system, GM's OnStar system, as well as Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep's U-Connect system. Other factory retained features include steering wheel controls, Aux inputs/USB ports, Bluetooth, voice command, satellite radio, and secondary display support. Plus, you get touchscreen control over many of these key factory audio features through the Pioneer DVD receiver.

Note: The iDatalink Maestro RR is web programmable, which means you'll need to flash the iDatalink Maestro RR interface module with the correct firmware from iDatalink's website. In addition to flashing the iDatalink Maestro RR module, you'll also need a vehicle specific harness (sold separately). The Pioneer head unit's OEM Setup menu must also be configured with your compatible vehicle's factory system before initial operation.

You are supposed to be able to with the appradio app from pioneer and connecting your phone via hdmi. It kept freezing on me during startup so I didn't fight it anymore. However this was before the latest firmware update.

Will the reversing camera image override the second camera image in the case when the second camera is ON and then the vehicle is put in reverse? Are you able to force the second camera image to display regardless of being in reverse?
    charles  May 19, 2016

    A
Yes. One of the "modes" (cd, hd radio, cd, etc.) is camera view. Once you select camera view you can choose camera 1 or 2. I put a front camera on my car so when I need to I can look at the curb or whatever when I am pulling in. This unit has great camera flexibility.
    roy  Dec 01, 2016
    A
A reversed image would be a featured supplied by the selected camera; not the Pioneer stereo so, the feature would be specific the camera connected to that input. You can elect to view the rear-view camera (towing mode) or second camera input at any time. You will find this information, and more, by clicking the "Details" tab on the stereo's main webpage and scrolling down below the "Features & Specs" table. I hope that helps! Is the external mic that is included bluetooth or hard wired? It say's it includes a clip on to the visor, if it is wired, would you run the wire up the side of the car?

It is wired. On my car i ran it up the sise of the car under the panelling and then clipped it to the hand hold above the door. Ir turned out nice. Less then an inch of wire is visible and only if you look for it.
    kurt  May 16, 2016

It's is wired - I removed my A-pillar cover and ran the wire thru the existing channel, then tucked it under the headliner. I ran it along an existing wiring harness under the instrument cluster and looped the excess into the void behind the radio.
    david  May 16, 2016
    A
It is a wired mic. My installer ran it up the side of the car and under the headliner to position it near my rear-view mirror. That location works well for me, makes the mic somewhat inconspicuous, and the wire is completely hidden.

It is wired, plugs in to the back of the head unit. I ran mine up the inside of the molding to the left of the windshield, so only the mic is sticking out. Works perfectly.

The mic is wired. You can run the wire up the A pillar to install it.
    justin  May 16, 2016

The external mic is hard wired, not Bluetooth. Mine personally was run and clipped on the inside dash bezel of the instrument cluster. However most of the applications I've seen are run up through the "A" pillar on the driver side and clipped on the head liner. Hope this answers your question.
    jaime j  May 16, 2016

It is hardwired. Run from behind dash up side of windshield if you so desire. I mounted mine behind the steering wheel and it works great.

is the aux port in the back the same functionality as a regular aux port, and can i use my own music app on my android since my custom playlist and eq are on my poweramp app? im new to the stuff
    richard  Apr 20, 2016

    A
As far as the AUX, I believe so, but not sure I don't use it. To use your phones EQ settings etc. you would need to use Bluetooth or assumedly the AUX input. I personally turn any sound processing off in my phone because they defeats the purpose of such a high end stereo. Too much tweaking can ruin sound quality more then help it. If you were buying a cheap stereo without time alignment, auto eq, etc. then by all means use your apps.
    roy  Apr 21, 2016

Yes it's a regular aux. If you have an Android phone you can also root it and get arunchained to mirror your phone on the screen

Yes and yes. You should be able to connect via bluetooth also. Android auto is very limited on which apps you can use at the moment but that's also a possible option if you have a supported app.

Hi Bob. Here is what I know. I have a Samsung Galaxy S3 currently which is not compatible because of the old OS with Mirrorlink. That part I know. I am not sure if the newer phones will natively interface with the 4100nex or if you need an external module like the Pioneer CD-ML100. I just don't know right now. I bought the unit mainly because it will play 24-192 FLAC files :). I will have the same question when I have to upgrade my phone soon. Call Pioneer and ask them. Sorry I could not help more. Eric

If i hook up rear headrest monitors. would i be able to to use functions of the radio such as Sirius radio, android auto or both while displaying a movie to the rear monitors? and going a little farther can i use the HDMI or SD input to display to those monitors while doing the stated above?

On either the 4100NEX or 4200NEX, the rear AV output can be set to DVD/CD, AV, USB-1/iPod, SD, or Off while still giving users in the front seat access to the head unit's feature set (including SiriusXM and/or Android Auto). However, you would not be able to use the HDMI input source to display on the rear seat monitor. I hope that helps. My Bio: http://www.crutchfield.com/Support/Bio.aspx?bio=159

It is probably not possible to add any apps such as IGo to this unit, as the Pioneer software is not user-expandable. But, since it supports Apple Carplay (with Apple Maps) and Android Auto (with Google Maps), you will have decent navigation capabilities out of the box as long as you connect a smartphone.

The album art HAS to be imbeded in the music file itself. I use mp3tag. The jpeg has to be resampled to 300x300 max resolution and around 100kb file size. Mp3tag works with mp3, Flac, and wav files. Let me know if you need more help. Eric

I don't know the answer to that. Album art is hit-or-miss.I just with I could figure out a way to get it to play music from the SD card in track order instead of alphabetical. As a result, I rarely use the SD feature.

Yes but it will not show up on the car unit - only on your phone. Or you can have a mirror system installed on your unit that mirrors everything on your iPhone screen to the car screen and that does not involve CarPlay at all. This is extra and you need to call customer support and they will tell you what to buy to work that out and how to install that. I don't know it off the cuff.

I have the Galaxy NoteI 5 will this radio allow me to play some videos on YouTube or netflix on it with the mirroring capabilities ?
    paul  Dec 13, 2015

Mirrorlink does not truly MIRROR you device. It's rather pathetic actually. The only way I can play videos is if I download them onto a SD card or USB flash drive. I tried 4 different head units trying to do the same thing and there isn't really anything out there unless your phone has HDMI outputs. I purchased an Android stereo and it is basically a smart phone stereo in your dash. It worked for Netflix, YouTube, etc. You would just have to have a WIFI connection or hot spot from your phone. But where it excelled in Android ways, it failed in car audio ways in my opinion.

If I remember correctly, Samsung remove MHL support since the s6, meaning there is no longer a USB to HDMI out feature on our device. And in order to use mirrorlink, you need to use that. You can try buying one of those casting device plug into the HDMI port and cast to that, but online reviews said that those devices are not stable (in general)

Last firmware update was released in March 2015. I would not buy this unit if wireless carplay is essential for you, as an upgrade to support it is probably unlikely (and it is not even clear that the hardware is capable of supporting it). I think that wireless functionality will probably not be available until the next generation of carplay products. The wired version works great though, and it has the advantage of keeping your phone charged while you use it. I added a USB port on the center console (wired to USB1 on the 4100NEX) to make connection as easy as possible (and so I wouldn't have worry about tearing the dash apart in case the phone end of the cable gets damaged).

Press HOME button to display top menu screen. Touch the key with the GEARS icon first, then the key with the TOOLS icon in that order. The SYSTEM screen should appear. Touch repeatedly until the desired setting appears. On a beep sounds and Off no sound. Hope this helps, not sure if this is for touch sound or button sound.

There should be no loose wires. And as for where to connect the USB connector depends on what kind of phone you have. If you have an iPhone, you'll need to connect it to the top USB port. If you have an Android, you'll need to connect it to the bottom USB port in the back of the system.

The USB cable that comes with the unit is a nice one to use. Just plug it into the rear of the unit and what I did is drilled a small hole just big enough to get the end of the cable through in the back of a small storage compartment which is in the dash under the climate control and stuck the wire through from the back and only have about 6"sticking out to plug in my iPhone. I hope this info works for you.

Any USB extension cable will work. Make sure it's plugged into USB 1. That's the only port Apple CarPlay works on. I had to tear my dash apart to correct that. Best advise buy a second USB extension cable so you can connect two devices at once.

The only thing that comes with the purchase is a USB extension cable. If you're trying to connect another cable, you'll need to purchase another cable. You'll also need to purchase an aux cable or use an existing one, neither cables have to be from Pioneer but it is recommended for Apple products.
    ruben  Sep 20, 2015
    A
It depends on what device you are using. In most case, you can use the cable that comes with your device. For android, you have to be sure that the cable is not a power cable (meaning doesn't carry data). As for iOS, some requires a special cable (old 30 pin to usb + aux) that you have purchase from Pioneer, but newer phone can use just the lightning cable that comes with the phone. Look up the user manual for this device in crutchfield, it has a section explaining what cable is needed for each device. If it requires a simple connection (phone to usb, not phone to usb + aux), you can use cables bought from other place.

    gerber i  Sep 19, 2015

I am not sure. I seems plausible to connect all three connectors, but controlling them is something else. In order to connect (and use) the apple connect function you need to add an apple HD connector which connects two lightning cords (1 to unit, 1 to phone) and an HD cord to the back of the unit. One of the two lightning cords then connects to the iPhone and enables you to display the phone on the 7" display. It might be possible to access the music from the android, but I'm not sure you could control it from the head unit. I would suggest choosing one OS for control and using the thumb drive input (on front) for music playback not on the controlling phone.
    yale  Sep 18, 2015

It is possible yes. I have an HDMI, AUX, USB 1 for Apple, and USB 2 for Android all running to my glove box. You can plug and play all you want. You will just have to go into settings and change your AV setting from Android to Apple. That is it. You can do it easily by setting that item as a favorite and you will be able to access it easier. I run Android auto all the time for Google maps but have an old iPod plugged in to listen to some music. The run together with no problem.

I did not purchase a factory amp bypass and was unaware of a need. However, after I wired the Pioneer unit (thinking I was following the instructions that came with the unit and the harness that I purchased additionally), I had to call tech support to get it working. I'm sorry I'm vague on the details here because I can't remember exactly what I to do. I recall that I had to splice in upstream of the new harness, and I think I was going into a line to the amp. I bought from Crutchfield purposely to have that tech support backing me up. Good luck!
    john  Sep 08, 2015

You may need a module to use the factory amp, not bypass it. It is vehicle specific. In my case, I needed the module in order to use my factory amp. Otherwise, volume may be too soft or it may be so loud it distorts and damages speakers. Crutchfield Rep or Pioneer should be able to answer specifically. If they say you need it, you will DEFINITELY want to get it. Also, you may want to consider getting the module to retain your steering wheel controls. All of these items are available through Crutchfield. I love my system!

Can't address the Android Auto question, but CarPlay and Pandora work fine together. Pandora will keep playing when you switch to the Apple maps screen. If you have the Pandora screen up, navigation instructions and incoming messages will display as banners, and audio navigation instructions will temporarily interrupt the music. You can easily switch back and forth between the CarPlay and Pandora screens without disrupting the operation of either.

Yes, kind of. Pandora cannot run over Bluetooth while using CarPlay. CarPlay cannot control Pandora. It is possible to dump out of the CarPlay interface and use Pandora directly via the Pioneer interface and then go back to CarPlay. Most of the time Pandora continues to play. Overall, it's not a very pleasant experience though and I tend to use ITunes Radio in this situation and Pandora over Bluetooth.

For use with CarPlay and a lightning device the HDMI and lightning/HDMI adapter are not necessary. Simply plug the Lightning cable into the iPhone 6 and connect to the top USB port (I believe this is USB 1). USB 2 would be used when connecting an android device via the HDMI method. The instructions include directions on which port to use and when.

Hi, I'm assuming you mean CarPlay from Apple. I'm not using anything called AppRadio. To use Carplay, you have to first verify that you have firmware version 1.3. I bought mine in early June, and it still had version 1.0. Fairly easy to upgrade version if you follow instructions exactly. Then, you need to use USB port 1. You do not need to use the HDMI cable, and in fact, I'm going to pull my pioneer out and remove that big cable since I don't envision connecting external DVD players, etc. In my other car, I have something called HondaLink that does require an adapter that converts lightning to USB & HDMI and needs to go into both ports. This pioneer is simpler.

pioneer avh 4100nex- i find that 'bluetooth audio' won't work as long as the usb cable is plugged into my S5 galaxy. this means 'android auto' won't work if using bluetooth audio. what? and, the pioneer 4100nex only has one 'aux' port, and that is used for the maestro, so i don't have an aux in for anything. what? any thoughts?

If you have the phone plugged in you do not have to put the bluetooth on because the music will play through the cable. Make sure bluetooth is off before plugging in, or if you want to play through bluetooth make sure the phone is not plugged in, you can only do one or the other.

Yes you can. I have both front camera and back camera installed. To switch between two cameras, I just push a button. However, I think the front camera would take 1 input you are allowed to have.

Does the screen or bezel glare? Is the screen clear in bright sunlight?
    logan  Jun 16, 2015
    3 answers
    A
The bottom of the screen can be adjusted so it tips up for better viewing. This is great if you unit sits low on your dash/console. Mine is in a Prius which sits high on the dash. Unfortunately, the screen won't tip down so I get a bit of a glare in direct sunlight. But it is only a problem when watching some videos. The audio screens are fine in all sunlight. Unless you plan to spend a lot of time parked watching movies in the middle of the day, this is no problem.
    stephen  Sep 08, 2015

Nothing glares too bad - you can see it in full sunlight just fine.

It can definitely be a little hard to see in the wrong kind of light. I disabled the automatic brightness on mine and set it to change based on the time instead. That way, it's always on full brightness during the day, and it makes a huge difference.

YES, you can. So the way you would do it is by aux cord. You can go to the default interface and listen to music from your aux and then your just switch over to the android auto while still playing from your ipod, all the features will work and the voice guidance for maps will talk over the lowered music like normal.

Yes, you can use CarPlay Maps and any of the headhunt's other audio sources - you are not limited to using only the audio sources in CarPlay. Took a little bit to understand how it all works, but basically you can use the Mode button to switch the display between CarPlay and the active audio source screens. There are also audio mix settings so CarPlay alerts (Siri) integrate with active audio source.
