Pioneer's NEX interface puts the emphasis on ease of use

Pioneer's 2014 lineup of navigation receivers spotlights the NEX interface, which provides drivers with intuitive, responsive fingertip command of the action onscreen. They also offer a wealth of entertainment and integration options, including some impressive real-time, smartphone-connected navigation extras that are coming down the road.

Pioneer AVIC-5000NEX navigaiton receiver

Fingertip command of your music, apps, and much more

Pioneer's AVIC-5000NEX DVD/navigation receiver offers the NEX interface on its 6.1" display. You can choose musical sources with ease, and you can integrate your smartphone to get the most out of your travel-friendly apps. Like to talk to Siri®? You can communicate with her through this Pioneer without taking your eyes off the road. iPhone users also get Pioneer's AppRadio mode for in-dash command of several important apps, while Android owners can employ MIrrorLink™ technology to navigate a car-friendly version of their phone's display right on the receiver's screen (optional interface cables required for smartphone connections).

Pioneer's innovative AppRadioLIVE streamlines your app info and functions into one easy-to-use interface. You'll enjoy quick access to your music, media, calendar, and other sources you subscribe to, just by downloading the AppRadioLIVE app and syncing your services. AppRadioLIVE works with your apps to provide visual map guidance and access to points of interest, as well as the ability to search for concerts, shows, and other local events of interest. And you can show several sources of information simultaneously, quickly shifting from one to another with a touch of your finger.

Note: AppRadio Mode and AppRadioLIVE are currently not compatible with iOS 8 due to stability and display issues. Please see "Details" for more information.

Apple CarPlay™

Pioneer's the first on deck with CarPlay in aftermarket car stereos. CarPlay integrates your iPhone into the driving experience in a new, seamless interface, putting iPhone content at the driver's fingertips with minimal distraction. That means easy access to your music library, your phone, messages, navigation, and many third party streaming music apps, too. Learn more at www.apple.com/ios/carplay. A firmware update is required — now available at Pioneer's website.

Turn-by-turn directions

The AVIC-5000NEX provides dependable door-to-door navigation, with maps of the entire U.S., Canada, and Puerto Rico, plus nearly 8 million searchable points of interest. Text-to-speech voice prompts announce actual street names at turns, so you'll hear "turn left at Hilltop Drive," instead of "take the next left." You'll also have 3D representations of landmarks and buildings keeping you oriented in urban areas.

Stay in contact with Bluetooth®

The AVIC-5000NEX's built-in Bluetooth connectivity works great with your compatible smartphone. You'll be able to carry on hands-free conversations using the receiver's included external microphone. And it'll work with most phones for wireless streaming audio, thanks to its advanced Hands-Free Profile technology. You'll also get smartphone app control through your devices:

  • iPhone: With a separate cable, you'll get control of your Aha Radio app through the receiver's touchscreen when connected. App Mode also gives you limited control over other select apps on your iPhone. You can control your iPhone's Pandora® app wirelessly with a Bluetooth connection, including station creation.

  • Android: You'll get control of your smartphone's Pandora (with station creation) and Aha Radio apps through Bluetooth, so no cable needed.

Pioneer AVIC-5000NEX navigation receiver

Connect your devices...

The AVIC-5000NEX boasts a bevy of connections for your media devices. It's got a pair of rear USB inputs and a microSD™ card slot for your favorite digital tunes, including FLAC lossless files. This receiver will also play all your CDs and DVDs, including discs loaded with music files, while a rear A/V input offers a connection for any other audio/video sources. Pioneer's MIXTRAX technology gives your digital files unique DJ treatments with effects and nonstop blends that'll turn your car into a mobile dance party.

...and make your media look and sound its best

The 6.1" WVGA screen is great for viewing video from DVDs or other sources when you're parked. You can tap into video content on your iPod or smartphone with the help of the correct cable (not included). When you're on the road, you can play movies through a rear-seat monitor for your passengers, so they can stay entertained during long road trips. Dual-zone capability lets you enjoy the radio or another audio source up front while your passengers watch their favorite movies in the back.

No matter what you're listening to, you can look forward to superb sound quality from the AVIC-5000NEX, which featueres a fingertip swipe-enabled 13-band graphic equalizer, plus built-in Auto EQ and Time Alignment for optimized listening. Use the high- and low-pass crossover's adjustable points and slopes to fine-tune the sound to your tastes, and engage the Advanced Sound Retriever to fill in the missing "gaps" in your compressed music files to restore them to CD-like clarity.

Expand your system

Eliminate the pain of FM stations fading away on long trips. You can hook up a satellite radio tuner (not included) to this receiver and listen to your favorite entertainment, sports, news, and commercial-free music channels anywhere you go. You can also connect up to two cameras, so you can see more of what's near your vehicle when getting in and out of tight spots. If you're looking to add subs and amps, you can take advantage of three sets of high-voltage preamp outputs available.

Want to keep your car's steering wheel audio controls?

In most vehicles, you can use an adapter to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this Pioneer stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and the Pioneer, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. Check the "Accessories" tab for compatible adapters.

iDatalink Maestro lets you keep your factory extras

If your vehicle comes with factory add-ons like Ford SYNC®, GM OnStar®, or Chrysler Uconnect™, you don't have to worry about losing your favorite conveniences to get navigation and better sound — the AVIC-5000NEX offers compatibility you won't find in many other aftermarket radios, thanks to the iDatalink Maestro module (not included).

For Ford SYNC systems, you'll be able to retain voice-controlled features, steering wheel audio controls, and factory audio functions. For GM vehicles, you'll keep your steering wheel audio controls, your factory amp, safety warning chimes, and OnStar, if present, while Chrysler owners will get to keep all their Uconnect functionality.

iDataLink Maestro note: A firmware update from Pioneer (available here) may be required to utilize iDataLink features.

iPod/smartphone note: If you're going to use your iPod or smartphone with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for compatibility information.

Bluetooth note: Use of this receiver's Bluetooth features will depend upon your phone's Bluetooth capabilities. Learn more in our article explaining Bluetooth profiles.

    so far awesome!

Written By Anonymous, reno nv on Thursday, May 21, 2015

Very good product. Installed this into my 14 tacoma. I have the factory in tune touchscreen radio and this new unit blows that thing away! Sound is so much better! Navigation needs some help but still great! I definitely recommend this stereo to anyone looking for amazing sound quality over stock!

Pros: Great sound looks awesome lots of customizations

Cons: Navigation needs update needs mute button that's on screen all the time

    Impressed!

    Lasted 13 months

Written By CG, Michigan on Monday, May 11, 2015

For years, I have purchased and installed Pioneer Products. I have never had a Pioneer unit fail me, until this one. The most expensive Pioneer deck I have ever purchased lasted 13 months, and completely died tonight. This unit was a sad example of Pioneers long history of making good products. Odd Power cycling, crashing, and the Navigation requirements are a complete farce. The speed limit announcement will drive you mad until you call Pioneer for help since they don't print in the manual how to turn it off. Save your money and purchase a different brand of navigation unit. I have an expensive paperweight.

Pros: Lots of connectivity via USB, etc. Lots of Features

Cons: Navigation requires you to stop the vehicle and apply the emergency brake to enter new directions. If you are moving via GPS sensing, the menu is greyed out. Bluetooth is absolutely trash. It connects, but voice quality is horrible. Screen is grainy for the price. The APP function is a farce - this feature is useless, and Pioneer hasn't come out with any new features to use with this. The 5000 is slightly longer than other AVIC models - so the Crutchfield fit guide should be amended.

Just purchased and installed. Loved the price...get one now while there on sale! Very easy to use radio and apple play), figured it out with just playing with it for a while--Looks great installed-really modernizes my 2007 Sienna. Can't wait for our next family vacation. Great customer service with Crutchfield, ordered wrong install wiring for install on my vehicle and they sent a replacement promptly. Overall happy with purchase and would recommend product to others.

    Good nav system

Written By John M, California on Sunday, April 26, 2015

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The 5000NEX seems to be a dependable nav system. I just returned from a 3000 mile road trip through the western states and relied heavily on the nav's directions. I never got lost. I added a backup camera, and Sirius radio to my car, and they both connected easily to the 5000NEX. It takes a little practice to input locations and the onscreen keyboard is a little challenging. Overall this system took a lot of stress out of a very long drive.

Pros: Easy to install. Easy to use with practice. accommodates several sources of music, and a backup camera. The GPS seems to be very accurate. You can also designate the level of verbal direction you want to hear. Overall, I am very pleased with the way this system performed.

Cons: No operating instructions manual. The on line download includes instructions for three different models. 166 pages and you have to pick out the instructions pertinent to your model. A manual for the 5000NEX would have been nice. As mentioned above, the on screen keyboard can be difficult to use. If you have big fingers it can be time consuming and frustrating trying to type on the small keyboard.

Great unit. Functions well and has a great sound. Of the four people that have rode with me, two are looking to buy this unit.

Pros: Easy to use, with a great sound.

Cons: Only thing I don't like is the volume control disappears when not in use and you can't mute the unit unless you hit volume first.

Awesome DVD/GPS head unit. Apple CarPlay works well and provides easy hands free capabilities.

Pros: All the functions work well. The sound and video is excellent.

Cons: Instructions could be a little clearer. Apple CarPlay does not work with in vehicle mic, you must install pioneer mic.

Just wanted to say great job Crutchfield!! Shipping was right on the money along with customer service. I was looking at the 6000 but after talking with a rep I went with the 5000 due to I don't live in a big city and HD radio would not be beneficial to me. Thanks again Crutchfield y'all rock!!

Pros: ease of use, everything was supplied to drop in.

    Cons: None

    All I Need

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I like this a lot. My Tundra is only 14 years old and has needed this upgrade for some time. I can't believe I waited this long to get it, but it really completes the "must have" list. Still learning how to use everything, but it is basically intuitive and simple once you take the time to run through the options. I thought it might be a self-install when I saw the unit out of the box, but looks were deceiving! I ran the backup camera cable myself and then paid an audio shop to run all the hookups and get them right. There is a LOT more to this unit than first meets the eye, so it's definitely not a beginner's install. Would I buy this unit again or go for a more expensive one? I would definitely buy this one again- but I think I would possibly buy a more expensive camera than the Pioneer ND-BC6. The camera is less than expected.

Pros: Simple touchscreen controls, reasonable cost, iPhone music and apps, Bluetooth phone connectivity, excellent soundboard equalizer, and the night time screen brightness is just right (I have seen units that are far too bright in night mode- not this one)

Cons: Haven't found a brightness control yet and the daytime screen is not bright enough in some lighting conditions, at least for me. The Nav takes four entries per address and is much more cumbersome than my simple Garmin Nuvi. I was sort of hoping the unit would find and import all my addresses from my iPhone and save me a world of time!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I see and read a lot of favorable reviews on this unit and overall I agree. However as an older audiophile if your looking for warmth and full sound this may not be the unit for you. In today's world of junk digital equipment and sound, this is great, if you never knew better and were raised on mp3 instead of vinyl records and good audio equipment you will be happy. I am struggling with the sound quality at this moment, has thin spots and a bit tiny. May be the nature of today's electronics.

Pros: Lots of features and presets. Looks are good and the CD player sounds the best of all modes. Working with Crutchfield USA support was the best ever in this day of overseas tech support.

Cons: Navigation seems way to complex and long to enter an address. Not intuitive enough for me to save my home address without the manual in hand and that goes with all the other to many features. I whipped out my old Garmin to get somewhere out of frustration keying in an address into the Pioneer. Simple is always best, Sound quality.

Pros: Great sound. Easy navigation thru all functions & installation was a breeze.

    Cons: None to date.

Overall it's a good product hopefully more apps will be available and more bug fixes come.

Pros: Navigation is great. Ease of use is good. CarPlay is good blue tooth and back up cam work well.

Cons: Sometimes have to reboot unit after unplugging phone. Weather doesn't work on 5000. To many extra wire and converters for video to work.

Outstanding radio from a great reseller!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Purchased this radio to replace the stock VW radio and return to Pioneer after using stock for 6 months in a new car. The new radio is outstanding, especially when paired with an iPhone. CarPlay works great! More importantly was the outstanding service provided by Crutchfield. They identified all the optional components required to maintain steering wheel controls and even the existing USB connection in the car. The website and the person I spoke to in order to verify I was buying the right model for my needs were invaluable in making this a successful purchase. A purchase like this is a very expensive optional item and it's important to get it just right. Thanks again to Tim@Crutchfield, he did an outstanding job.

Pros: All the features work as advertised. If you have an iPhone CarPlay is awesome.

Cons: Backup camera takes a moment to kick in.

A good attempt by Pioneer, but very glitchy

Written By Dan, New Jersey on Sunday, March 08, 2015

Really 3.5 stars. I was looking forward to this unit, and as I've lived with it for about 9 months now, I know it well. First off, kudos to Pioneer for actually updating the software for this thing. It made a gigantic difference in its reliability and consistency. Unfortunately, it didn't fix some of the fundamental flaws of the design. For starters, this unit has NO on/off switch. Its not possible to turn it off by itself, which is basically absurd. The unit does crash or hang once in a while (esp while using bluetooth), so I have to pull over, shut the car off, and open the door to cut the power in order to power cycle the unit. I could put a cheap toggle switch in the car for this, but this is an expensive unit for goodness sake. There is no simple way to mute it, you have to adjust the volume in order to get the Mute screen widget to appear. The program/song that you are listening to is displayed in small, grayed out font, which makes it nearly impossible to see. Other parts of the display are shown in different fonts that you can see.

Pros: Pioneer builds decent stuff. You can sort MP3s on a USB by song name, OR by file name, which is useful. Navigation is decent, but like many, doesn't give ample warning to turn. Awesome collection of audio tweaks, which Pioneer is great at.

Cons: Mute function is difficult to get to in a pinch, which is usually when you need it. Bluetooth is flaky as heck, and crashes the unit once a week or so. It does this with all the phones in our family, so its the unit. Backup camera displays 70% of the time, the rest, its a fuzzy screen (changed the camera twice). Multifunction button in the center of the buttons has a mind of its own, and craters the unit sometimes.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this unit about a month ago for my 2004 GTO and it took only a few days to arrive. I chose to buy this from Crutchfield because the installation and mounting hardware came along for free. This included the removal tools, a faceplate and the mounting hardware. I think it's a great deal overall. The navigation had many different options and it takes some time to figure out all the features. I think this is a great deal and the installation went pretty smoothly. I'm happy with it. I would recommend this to everybody because of the great navigation and especially the Apple CarPlay.

Pros: Installation of the unit was pretty quick and easy. All of the included items made it simple. The faceplate looks factory and the illuminated buttons change color, so I chnaged them to the factory looking green, which matches the rest of the car. People who see my car have no idea that it is aftermarket. The apple. AirPlay feature works really well. However this does require an update that you need I download from pioneer's website.

Cons: The only issue I have had with this unit is that there are only a few preset EQ settings. This isn't an issue if you really know how to EQ a stereo but I figured it out regardless. I have it set to a custom one. This seems to work pretty well.

    Awesome Product

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great upgrade from my Pioneer AVH-P4300DVD and an incredibly easy install. I bought this unit because I thought that my old deck had gone out, but it turned out to just be the PAC Interface. The additional features that this unit has made up for the price the unit cost. The Apple Carplay and navigation are great and work flawlessly. I have not gotten my backup camera yet, but it is coming and I can't wait to see how it works. The one thing that I do not like is that you are unable to navigate to a new address if you are operating the vehicle. Having the ability to have a much more hands free experience is great and the GPS addition only makes it better.

Pros: Apple Carplay and Navigation at a very affordable price

Cons: Not being able to input new addresses while driving down the road or even stopped at a red light

    Love this pioneer nex5000

This is the most I have paid for a car stereo. It is well worth the money. The gps is great. Very cool how you can still see songs playing and have maps on and vice versa. Makes my 2010 Corolla look five years newer. Backup camera was a inexpensive fun extra that was quick to install. Amazing all the features this thing has. Blu tooth has been nice addition and works well. This has been a lot of fun for the entire family. Road trips have been even better now

Pros: Lots of features. Gps is excellent

    Cons: Radio reception is poor

    So Far, Awesome Product.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Plenty of great features. Needed a decent GPS navigation and Bluetooth phone connection. Apple Play is great with verbal text messaging and ability to dictate and send responses. Wish it did it with E-mail but that's OK, I'll text more. Giving 5 stars although I'm very upset with the local big box store's "experts" who didn't bother to reconnect the USB port in my console and just ran a wire out from under the dashboard on the floor instead. Not very professional. Can't get any AM stations and they didn't switch my back up camera from my mirror to the receiver. So, 5 stars for the receiver, big thumbs down to the 'geeks'. Go somewhere reputable and discuss your expectations before agreeing to the install.

Pros: GPS and Bluetooth are great, FM stereo is awesome, Screen themes look great. Apple play puts your I-phone music right up there on the screen.

Cons: If installed as it should be, no cons to speak of.

This is a fantastic radio. Bought this on the recommendation from an advisor in Tech Support. I wanted a navi radio that would do good as well with my Iphone6. First off, I will say the support at Crutchfield is beyond great!! ............. Back to the radio. It has a ton of features that I wanted. Also, the graphics and settings are very customizable. From the first time I turned it on, I noticed a huge difference in sound. (I have a Lexus is300, so the factory radio is pretty good to start with). It looks factory, sounds awesome and there wasn't a bunch of wires all over the car. If I could have given it 10 stars, I would have. The Apple Carplay is what sold me. Very simple to use. Just plug in your Iphone and your apps come up on the screen. Also, you can stream music to it. Once again, if you couldn't tell, I absolutely love this radio.

Pros: Great design, looks good, sounds great, simple to use.

Cons: Takes a little long to load up on first start of navi

Nice upgrade from factory navi unit. Customize everything from button color to wallpaper. Good for the price.

Pros: Great look in dash, sound is great, video is clear, navigation and trip features are well laid out. Love Bluetooth phone link.

Cons: Setup is not so easy especially the clock setup. Dual zone does not work correctly in my escalade. App play is useless with my android. Unit is deep and hard to fit in dash when using a module to maintain steering wheel controls due to the cluster of wires you now have.

I had originally purchased a Jensen VX7020 and while that unit is great for the dollar (good bang for the buck) I missed some of the finer features of a more upscale unit. Well after I installed the Jensen and lived with it awhile I decided that I should of upgraded. All I can say is Crutchfield is the best. They were as concerned about my satisfaction as I was and as a result gave me the option to return the Jensen (their policy) and purchase this Pioneer. Well bottom line - I am a very happy customer. This unit is great - it behaves very predictably and the sound quality is over the top. As long as you are willing to forgo some of the features in the 8000 or others, this is the unit to get. Check some of the review videos online. Thanks Crutchfield - you guys are the best.

Pros: Excellent Unit- great User Interface, Very Predictable operation, Does the things it says it does and does them properly (for example - music from USB stick uses mp3 tag info correctly), great sound, excellent flexibility, 2 custom EQ setting options, excellent audio tailoring set-up features, great Nav, Great display - night and day with user config backgrounds from USB stick

    Cons: none

    Great Head Unit

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Just installed this in a 2005 Silverado. Its absolutly awesome. I had a few questions during installation and the Crutchfield tech guys know thier stuff. I wanted something to modernize the truck with bluetooth, ipod connection and GPS and this did just that. I was a little hesitant to pull the stock unit out because of the onstar, xm radio and steering wheel controls. But with the interface and sirrus xm tuner and all is good. The GPS is quick to respond along with the touch screen. It has plenty of audio control options to adjust to any listening you prefer. I also installed a back up camera and the picture is clear and crisp. The dvd option is nice too. I was waiting for the wife and slide a movie in to kill the time. I did the Pioneer firmware update and now have Apple Car Play which is just plain cool. You touch the message icon on the screen and all you do is talk to it. It reads your text messages back to you as well. I had a question the firmware update and had to call Pioneer. I didnt expeirance any of the pour service other reviewers have stated. All and all I am very happy with the HU so far.

    Pros: Pioneer quality

Cons: Its petty but I hate the purplish pink pioneer logo when it boots up.

Solid Product but could use a few things

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Put in 2010 Silverado for CarPlay feature and backup Camera. Camera feature works great. Install wasn't bad at all as long as you can match colors of wires and directions tell everything. Sound is way better than factory radio however radio reception isn't there. Factory radio was way better at picking up stations. CarPlay is good but the maps integration could be improved because I don't use the actual turn by turn and it won't let you zoom in on the map without turn by turn. Also, the Bluetooth isn't the best. My factory radio had Bluetooth and I used it all the time and people could hear me great. This one is terrible and forces me to unhook and use my phone because the people on the other end can't hear me well or understand anything when they talk to me while driving. Really wish that was improved. As far as music and basic nav goes it's a solid unit but could use a few improvements.

Pros: Apple CarPlay and camera compatible.

Cons: Poor Radio reception and really poor Bluetooth microphone

Finished up the install today (2007 Jeep Wrangler) and have been playing with the radio ever since. Very cool features!! The GPS works great right out of the box, the radio sounds great through my factor speakers and amp. A big improvement over my factor radio. CarPlay is outstanding the integration in to Messages and GPS are awesome. Bluetooth works great. Can recommend this radio high enough.

Pros: CarPlay works flawlessly, Sounds is outstanding, Built in Navigation is better then Apple Maps.

Cons: Complicated install. I need some other parts from idatalink

    Bluetooth Horrible

Written By dsdewhir, Chattanooga, TN on Monday, November 10, 2014

Putting new tech in an old car

Written By RossL, Wisconsin on Wednesday, November 05, 2014

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Wanted all the convenience of new car interface with my technology in my old vehicle. I got in-dash back-up camera, navi, usb ports, aux port, dvd, radio and the option of satellite radio. My old radio had none of that. This unit eliminated all the clutter from all the different devices in the car into one interface. I'm still figuring out how to work everything but for sure love, love, love this thing. Lots of standard power to push the speakers. The factory speakers were louder and clearer but I chose to change them too. The wiring is complicated if you haven't done this before...be warned. I have some electronics install experience and had to go online to get help with this one.

Pros: All the new major features of a new car in my old 2004 model.

Cons: 1. Install is complicated, take it to a pro to save time and aggravation. 2. The speed warning voice is very annoying. It turns down my music & chimes in if you go 1mph over the limit. I've yet to figure out how to turn it off. (I haven't read the manual yet.) 3. You have to buy all the extra modules to work all the features (back-up camera, steering wheel control interface, satellite radio module).

    great unit

Written By Esteban, San Diego on Wednesday, October 15, 2014

The unit is pretty sweet. I had this installed in my 08 350z three months ago and I couldn't be happier. The Bluetooth audio works well and so does the Bluetooth phone connection. I just recently did the firmware update for the Apple Carplay and I must say I was skeptical at first. I thought for some reason it wouldn't work but I followed the instructions and sure enough everything went super smoothly (visit pioneer website for firmware update.) All in all a solid unit and it also enhanced the quality of sound from my stock system which is a Bose. Two thumbs up from this guy.

I bought the AVIC-5000NEX and had it installed by Extreme Sound in Middletown, DE. They did a beautiful job. The unit is beautiful, and the CarPlay functionality is a huge leap in usability and safety. The unit is an incredible value, highly recommended.

    Pros: Quality, Value, Usability, safety.

Cons: A few OEM connections lost (XM, USB and AUX).

Decent unit, pretty evolved, but has some oddities

I seem to change head units every 8 months to a year. Had pretty much every brand out there, including a number of Pioneers. Installed the 5000NEX about a month ago, and here's the skinny.

From a connection point of view, it has everything you could ever want. USB, MicroSD, Aux, Sirius, Camera, etc. The touch screen is fine, although it does lack sensitivity sometimes and becomes sluggishly responsive. Overall, its fine though. Typical Pioneer audio controls, which means its top of the heap. Great EQ, Time alignment, etc. If you are an SQ head, and don't use external amps/DSP, you can get pretty far with this unit. Sound quality, well, this one I'm still working through. I do use external amps and DSP, and this unit does NOT sound as good as the past few, and thats after several different tunes. It might be me though....

Bluetooth phone is super important to me, and people always complain about microphone sound quality on this unit. Will try another mike. Very frustrating Finally, the GUI is pretty decent. Giant letters for source selection is nice, however, the display of programming is smallish as well as dimmed, which is odd. Very hard to see sometimes, and doesn't seem to be changeable. Navigation works as expected, but screen navigation is awkward and no intuitive. Sometimes, it takes 10 minutes to set up the navigation for a trip, which is bizarre.

Overall, a solid unit with a few livable flaws

Pros: Solid unit, large type on screen for some functions, good connectivity, navigation hasn't gotten me lost yet, Pioneer has great audio control, EQ, Time Alignment, etc. Reasonably thought out limitations on what can be done while driving. 2 USB connectors that are both universal. Generally well laid out screens. MicroSD slot on the front is super convenient

Cons: Goofy navigation set up with layers of menus and options. AppRadio from Android is completely useless. Smallish hard buttons that are hard to see (I could have probably tried the all touch screen unit). Sound quality via pre-amp outs is not what I expected, but could be my unit or my tune.

    Pioneer Has Horrible Customer Service

Written By Kent, Portland, Tx. on Friday, September 12, 2014

I'll start by saying that my complaint is about Pioneer not Crutchfield. Crutchfield has always provided a very high level of customer service and I recommend them for your purchases, Pioneer could learn a lot from them. I purchased this unit several months ago primarily based upon Pioneer's promise of an Apple Car Play firmware upgrade in "early Summer". As the months rolled by, Pioneer has said absolutely nothing to update that broken promise. Their Facebook page has hundred of requests and complaints, and yet, Pioneer has not bothered to utter a single word to it's customers. Stay away from Pioneer completely. They don't provide any level of customer service after they get their hands on your hard earned money.

Pros: Very good basic unit, but a bit overpriced for it's features.

Cons: App radio mode is quite a poor effort. No Apple Car Play update yet. Pioneer provides the worst customer service experience in the industry.

Nice unit does everything you could want. My 22 year old loves the head unit including the rainbow display and Ipod interface. Wiring was easy.

Pros: - nice reliable unit - looks Facotry

Cons: a bit tricky to mount, I had to modify the original metal mounting bracket for it to fit

After looking at different navs this was the best choice for my 2005 corvette! It also helped my really poor am/fm radio reception by 100%. Everything works like it supposed to with this unit, it fits and looks like the factory nav unit in the corvettes. I would recommend this unit to anyone looking for a great unit!

    Pros: Factory look, great navigation,

Cons: Don't like the navigation telling me I'm speeding when I go 1 mile over the speed limit.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Just had this installed so have little to say at this point. Looks good and fits well in my 2008 Mazda MX5. Screen is easily readable even in bright sunlight with the top down. Radio functions well and was easy to set up. Having more problems working out basic use of the GPS function- not too intuitive. Voice function sounds clear and is adjustable. Have had to calibrate the touch screen function at least twice to get it be sensitive enough to se with a finger. Instructions say not to use a sharp point of any kind but I think it would be more responsive with the use of a stylus. Connection to backup camera works very well. Also added the steering wheel connection for AV controls and that works fine. Bluetooth connections made easily. Have not yet started using phone connection. Will re-review in about a month after I have used he unit more.

Pros: Clear easily read screen. Looks like original equipment when installed.

Cons: Touch screen not as sensitive as wished

This is a great unit at a reasonable price. Used it to replace a factory am fm radio in a Savana van. Hooked it up with a rear view camera and I could not be happier. The install went fairly smoothly after we had the correct components. Have not used the GPS much at this point but it seems to be on par with any others I have used.

Pros: Sounds and looks good, very user friendly and intuitive. Bluetooth is very clear. When using the phone you are easily heard, and you don't sound like your in a tin can.

Cons: Have not really found any cons at this point.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this stereo after my Pioneer AVIC-920BT stopped working in my 2007 Tacoma. I was very upset that a $1000 radio only lasted 3 years and was a little weary over buying Pioneer again but I'm glad I did. There are substantial improvements made over the last 3 years. The unit sounds great and the NAV system is better than any I have seen, factory, or aftermarket. I installed it myself without much hassle and overall, I am very pleased with the purchase. The user interface looks great and is much more user friendly than the 3 year old previous model. I highly recommend!!

Pros: The nav systems is stellar. A new feature actually gives you the addresses of both sides of the road as you are cruising down the street.

Cons: Not sure why, but I have to disconnect my Ipod for my Bluetooth streaming to work. I never had to do that with my previous pioneer. Also, I don't like how the song and album information are cut short if the titles are long. Actually, they don't even have to be long, anything more than 10 characters and it is cut off. You have the option to have them scroll but it just seems kinda cheesy.

This is a great little radio. If you want the full sceen one go for the extra cash. The touchscreen is responsive but can be hard to see in the daytime. I opted for this model because I have no need for hd radio, just a good navigation system. The audio made my sts v bose system louder and clearer. I just dont like how you cant isolate the speakers. The install was a breeze for the guys at the shop. Crutchfield provided everything I needed. Installation was around $100. This model does not have the tilting screen and the directions dont tell you how to remove the detachable face and there is no off button. I waited for a few weeks for these radios to be released . I am happy with it and it is a huge improvement over my factory 2006 nav unit. Frank brick nj

This system is as advertised, plus some. The features are awesome, the sound quality is amazing and pretty easy to use. installs in a couple of hours. Paired with rear-view camera, great safety addition. Only issue, takes a bit of time and a call to Crutchfield and Pioneer to fully understand the navigation settings.

Pros: Great Receiver, Excellent Navigation unit, awesome Bluetooth and superb add-ons

Cons: Navigation not that easy to navigate, but once you get the hang of it works great.

Cons: App radio takes a little while to get it to work.

    Touchscreen Display

6.1" LCD Touchscreen Monitor: The Pioneer AVIC-5000NEX features a 6.1" TFT Active Matrix, 16:9 widescreen touchscreen display. The resolution of the display is 800 x 480 (RGB), for a total of 1,152,000 pixels. The touchscreen display allows you to control this unit and a connected component such as an iPod/iPhone or Android smartphone. Menus appear on screen for making function choices, audio adjustments, and setting up the system.

    • Favorites: You can register the desired menu items on the AVIC-5000NEX's "Favorites" menu screen. Registering your favorite menu items allows you to quickly jump to the registered menu item by a simple touch on the favorites menu. Up to 12 menu items can be registered as a "Favorite".
    • OSD + Backgrounds: The color of the on-screen display can be set to red, amber, green, blue or white. The background display can be selected from 8 different preset displays for the AV Operation screen and 5 different preset displays for the Top Menu screen. In addition, you can change the background display to other images imported from an external USB or SD/SDHC device.
    • Widescreen Modes: You can choose from the following widescreen modes when playing back video - Full (4:3 picture is enlarged in the horizontal direction only; enabling you to enjoy a 4:3 picture without any omissions), Zoom (4:3 picture is enlarged in the same proportion both vertically and horizontally; ideal for a 16:9 screen), Normal (4:3 picture is displayed as it is).
    • Picture Adjustments: You can store numerous video settings for the head unit's video source and rear-view camera; including brightness (adjusts the black intensity), contrast (adjusts contrast) color (adjusts color saturation), temperature (adjust the color temperature), and Dimmer (adjusts brightness).
    • Dimmer: To prevent the display from being too bright at night, the display is automatically dimmed when the car's headlights are turned on. The automatic dimmer function only works when the orange/white illumination wire in the wiring harness is connected to the vehicle's headlight circuit.
Note: The unit offers English, Chinese, French, Portuguese, and Spanish text.

Start-Up Time: The Pioneer AVIC-5000NEX will turn on to the last source selected or the navigation screen. The unit has a start-up time of approximately 12.7 seconds from OFF to the last Source selected, or a start-up of approximately 35.3 seconds from OFF to the Navigation screen.

Front-Panel Control w/ Custom Illumination: In addition to the touchscreen controls, the unit includes frequently used buttons along the left edge of the screen. The color of the button illumination can be set to red, amber, green, blue, white, or scan (constantly cycling through the color spectrum). You can also create a custom color to match your vehicle's interior lighting (112 colors to choose from).

Detachable Security: The Pioneer AVIC-5000NEX's front-panel controls can be detached from the chassis to deter theft (no protective case provided). You can also enter a 5 to 16 character password that must be entered if the head unit is disconnected from power.

MIXTRAX Illumination: MIXTRAX features a club-style illumination that enhances the mood with a dynamic dance club-like lighting effect. As MIXTRAX begins, lights start pulsing to the beat of the music, adding an extra level of entertainment. You can choose among twelve patterns of lighting variations from sound pressure level or low-pass synchronization modes. The lighting effects work like a spectrum analyzer, reaching peak colors based on the intensity of the music.

Parking Brake Interlock: This unit has a parking brake interlock system that prohibits viewing of video programming and operating certain controls when the vehicle is in motion. In order to watch video on the in-dash monitor, the vehicle must be stopped with the parking brake engaged. The head unit's light green wire must be connected to your vehicle's parking brake detection circuit. The head unit's touchscreen will display "Attention! Viewing of front seat video source while driving is strictly prohibited", if you try to watch a video when your vehicle is in motion.

2-DIN Chassis: The Pioneer AVIC-5000NEX has a 2-DIN chassis (also known as "Double-DIN"), and will fit in many vehicles with a large dash opening. The unit can be ISO-mounted using factory brackets. There is also an optional double-DIN sleeve (130ADTV133, sold separately) available for this unit that will allow you to Euro-mount or custom mount the Pioneer head unit in your vehicle. As always, please consult Crutchfield's Outfit My Car to verify fit with your vehicle.

    Onboard Navigation

HERE Navigation: The AVIC-5000NEX offers a comprehensive map database from HERE covering the entire United States (including Alaska & Hawaii), Canada, and Puerto Rico enabling users to route to millions of destinations; including 7.9 Million points of interest (POIs). The map database is stored on the head unit's built in 8GB flash memory. Map updates via a microSD memory card will be available at later date.

Note: Car navigation maps are frequently updated. While this database was judged to be as accurate as possible at the time of its release, a map database can never be 100% accurate. Road information that is maintained in the map databases, such as turn restrictions or road names may change over time.

GPS Technology: The AVIC-5000NEX accurately measures your current location by the Global Positioning System, a network of satellites orbiting the earth to give you time and position information. The accuracy of the GPS information depends upon how good the reception is. The unit has a built-in GPS receiver with a magnetic antenna included. The AVIC-5000NEX also features a speed sensing cable for better accuracy of your vehicle's movement; this wire should always be connected to your vehicle's peed detection circuit.

Note: The navigation receiver took approximately 10.1 seconds to calculate directions from Virginia to California. It only took 7.7 seconds to calculate directions from Virginia to Maryland. These tests were done inside the Crutchfield Lab of the Crutchfield Head Quarters. Results will vary based on length of calculated route and your surrounding area.

AVICSYNC App (Future Availability): With Pioneer's free AVICSYNC app and a connected iPhone (4 and newer) or Android smartphone (Galaxy series), users can access connected services that include traffic, local search, weather, gas prices and more, with key information/icons overlaid on the existing map screen information (subscription(s) required). It also includes highly accurate and the fast live traffic updates (every two minutes) from its High Density (HD) Traffic feature.

On-Screen Map: The Pioneer AVIC-5000NEX displays a real-time moving map illustrating your current position and intended route. It will show map scale and geographic details such as lakes, rivers, highways, buildings, and towns. Your route is marked with a green line, while your vehicle is indicated by a red arrow on the screen, and checkered flag marks your destination. As you travel the AVIC-5000NEX guides to your destination with arrows on the map and directions at the top of the screen. The map screen will also indicate the distance to your next maneuver. During your calculated route, distance to your final destination, timed need to reach the final destination, and estimated arrival time are all displayed on-screen. You can adjust the following map settings.

    • 2D/3D Map Mode: The Pioneer AVIC-5000NEX allows you to view its on-screen map in a 2D (two-dimensional) or 3D (three-dimensional) view. 2D View displays a normal two-dimensional map with North or your direction at the top of map screen. Similar to paper road maps, the 2D mode, shows you streets, roads, and elevation by color. In 3D mode, your direction is at the top of the map screen and you can see the altitude and elevations differences. You can distinguish between valleys, mountains, and elevated roads. In selected cities 3D landmarks and 3D buildings are also displayed.
    • Color Mode: You can switch between daytime and nighttime color modes or let the head unit's software switch between the two mode automatically a few minutes before sunrise and a few minutes after sunset.
Note: The on-screen map offers Smart Zoom. When you approach a turn, the map will zoom in and raise the view angle to let you easily recognize your maneuver at the next junction. If the turn is at a distance, it will zoom out and lower the view angle to be flat so you can see the road in front of you.

Lane Guidance & Signposts: The Pioneer AVIC-5000NEX's navigation map offers helpful lane information and signpost guidance, along with exit service.

    • Lane Guidance: When navigation on multilane roads, it is important to take the appropriate lane in order to follow the recommended route. If lane information is available in the map data, the map screen will display the lanes and their directions using small arrows at the bottom of the map. High lighted arrows represent the lanes you need to take.
    • Signposts: Where additional information is available, signposts substitute arrows. Signposts are displayed at the top of the map. The color and style of the signposts are similar to the real ones you can see above the road or by the roadside, They show the available destinations and the number of the road the lane leads to.
    • Junction View: If you are approaching a freeway exit or a complex intersection and the needed information exists, the map is replaced with a 3D view of the junction. The lanes you need to take are displayed with arrows. Signposts can also be present, if information is available.
    • Exit Services: While navigation a route, you can find gas, food, lodging, and restrooms near upcoming exits along major highways and freeways.
    • Tunnel View: When entering a tunnel, the map is replaced with a generic tunnel image so that surface roads and buildings cannot distract you.

Audible Alerts: The Pioneer AVIC-5000NEX offers various audible alerts and functions to help you get to your destination safely.

    • Voice Guidance (Text-to-Speech): In addition to graphical on-screen directions and maps, the AVIC-5000NEX provides voice guidance and turn-by-turn directions. You can choose a male or female voice in English, French, or Spanish. Some of the voices are capable of text-to-speech, announcing the street names along with the turn directions. You can adjust the the voice guidance volume independently from the head unit's main volume.
    • Safety Alert: This function can warn you when you approach road safety cameras, school zones, or railroad crossings (if available). You can also add your own alert points. Beeps or the spoken type of alert will be heard when you are approaching of these points.
    • Speed Limit Warning: Some maps may contain information about the speed limits of certain road segments. The AVIC-5000NEX provides an audible warning if you exceed the recommended speed limit.

Note: The unit will mute the audio of the other sources during navigation voice-prompts.

Where Am I?: This screen contains information about the current position (or approximately the last known position if GPS reception is not available) and a button to search for POIs and emergency assistance nearby.

Route Calculation: The Pioneer AVIC-5000NEX calculates your route based on your Vehicle Type, Route Method, and Avoidances.

    • Vehicle Type: You select what type of vehicle you are driving, so the navigation unit can determine the best route based on your vehicle type (Car, Truck, Emergency, Bus, or Taxi).
    • Route Method: You can choose which route method (Fastest, Shortest, Green, Economical, or Easy) the navigation unit should use when calculating your route.
      • Fastest: give a quick route, if you can travel at or near the speed limit on all roads. Usually the best section for fast and normal cars
      • Shortest: gives a route that has the smallest total distance of all possible routes. It can be practical for slow vehicles
      • Economical: combines the benefits of Fast and Short; calculates as if it were calculating the Fast route, but it takes other roads as well to save fuel
      • Easy: results in a route with fewer turns and no difficult maneuvers
    • Avoidances: You can tell the navigation unit to avoid certain types of roads along your calculated route, such as - Highways, Tolls, Carpool/HOV, Unpaved Roads, and/or Ferries.

Detours & Alternatives: You can select "Route Alternative" to see the turn-list and map screen of four routes (Fastest/Shortest/Economical/Easy) with the selected route planning parameters, giving you the option to select which route to take. You can also choose to Detour around the road ahead, avoid a specific road, or around a section of the route.

Router Planner: The Route Planner feature lets you built your route usign the list of destinations you have chosen. You can modify the list as you like (adding or removing a destination (waypoint), changing a final destination, or setting a new starting position.

Itinerary w/ Route Simulation: The Itinerary page displays turn-by-turn instructions for your entire route and the distance between turns. You can preview all the route information and simulate travel along a projected route.

Auto Reroute: If you depart from the original route, the navigation system recalculates the route and provides new directions.

Trip Monitor: The Trip Monitor contains useful information about your trip. This information can be saved manually when you reach your destination or automatically along your route. Trip log data includes; Start/End Time, Avg./Max. Speed, Total/Driving/Stopped Time, Total Distance, and Min./Max. Altitude.

Off-Road Navigation: The difference between the on-road and off-road modes is the navigation itself. When you are on the Map screen with an off-road route, your position and heading is not aligned with the nearest road and there is no turn by turn navigation; just a recommended direction. You see a straight line drawn between your current position and the next destination to reach. The Turn Preview field in the top left corner shows an arrow with your bearing and the distance of the next destination.
