Our take on the Pioneer DEH-6400BT

by Ken Nail
Pioneer

Why replace your factory radio?

Two good reasons - sound quality and cool features. A new car stereo offers power that's superior to most factory radios, along with more sophisticated tone controls. And most car stereos offer built-in or optional features that add safety and fun to life in your car, including inputs for your iPod or MP3 player, Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free cell phone calls, satellite radio or HD Radio reception, and connections for building an audio system in your car.

Add Bluetooth for safety on your drive
Imagine the convenience of hands-free calling. When a call comes in, Pioneer's DEH-6400BT mutes the music and displays the incoming number or contact name. Just press a button and you can talk without fumbling with your phone — an important safety advantage on your busy commute. And thanks to audio streaming, you can send music wirelessly from many Bluetooth®-enabled devices to your receiver, too.

Pioneer DEH-6400BT

Loaded with Pioneer sound enhancements
Built-in Bluetooth is only one of the advantages this receiver has over run-of-the-mill car stereos. You'll also find an impressive collection of sound-shaping controls. Pioneer's Easy EQ 3-band equalizer lets you tailor the sound to match your taste and your car's interior. The Advanced Sound Retriever improves the audio performance of your digital audio files, reversing the compression process to give you more high-frequency sparkle and musical detail.

Choose colors to match your car and your taste
The bright dot-matrix display displays all system information clearly, and you can adjust the display and control colors of this receiver separately, with thousands of possible combinations on tap. The DEH-6400BT will blend right in, whatever the color of your car's control surfaces and dials.

Power and control
At the heart of this receiver, Pioneer's acclaimed built-in amp delivers plenty of power for good, clean sound, while the two sets of preamp outputs offer a convenient connection to a full system with external amplifiers, speakers, and subs. You'll find the low-pass filter and level control on the subwoofer preamp outputs handy for adjusting the bass from the driver's seat.

Ready to play your music
Plug your iPod® into the USB input, and you can use the Pioneer's controls to run the show. Once connected, the receiver bypasses your iPod's built-in digital-to-analog converter, using its own high-quality DAC to deliver your music files with the highest fidelity possible. You'll love the convenience of the auxiliary input on the front panel, great for plugging in a satellite radio, gaming device, or another audio source. The DEH-6400BT also plays all your CDs, including those with MP3 and WMA files burned onto them.

Want to keep your car's steering wheel audio controls?
In most vehicles, you can use an adapter to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this Pioneer stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and the Pioneer, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. Check the "Accessories" tab for compatible adapters.

Bluetooth note: Use of this receiver's Bluetooth features will depend upon your phone's Bluetooth capabilities. Learn more in our article explaining Bluetooth profiles.

Note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver.

    Built-in Bluetooth

Bluetooth Technology: The DEH-6400BT is equipped with built-in Bluetooth ver. 3.0 (powered by Parrot), allowing you to make and receive phone calls wirelessly through the receiver; as well as stream music wirelessly from your smartphone to the head unit. Bluetooth Technology is a short-range wireless radio connectivity technology that was developed as a cable replacement for mobile phones and other electronic devices. Bluetooth operates in 2.4 GHz frequency range and transmits voice and data at speeds up to 1 megabit per second.

Bluetooth Profiles: In order to use Bluetooth wireless technology, your phone must also be Bluetooth compatible and be able to interpret certain profiles. This unit is compatible with the following Bluetooth Profiles:

    • Hands-Free Communication: HFP (Hands Free Profile), HSP (Head Set Profile), OPP (Object Push Profile), PBAB (Phone Book Access Profile).
    • Audio Streaming: A2DP (Advanced Audio Distribution Profile), AVRCP (Audio/Video Remote Control Profile).

Phone Pairing: Up to 5 Bluetooth-compatible devices can be registered to this head unit. Only one device can be used at a time.

Note: Due to the differences in Bluetooth technology, some Bluetooth enabled devices may be incompatible, function improperly, or may not support all features when used with the Pioneer DEH-6400BT.

Hands-Free Communication: The DEH-6400BT supports wireless hands-free communication (HFP/HSP/OPP/PBAB) for your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone. The head unit will display the caller's information and an audible ring tone will be heard through your vehicle's speaker during an incoming call. You can manually answer an incoming call or have the unit automatically answer the call. The DEH-6400BT allows you to carry on a phone conversation from your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone using the head unit's external microphone and your car audio speakers. During a conversation you can adjust the volume, as well as switch between the Private Mode (talking directly on your cell phone) and the Hands Free Mode. Using the DEH-6400BT, you can dial a phone number in one of the following ways:

    • Speed (Preset) Dialing: You can easily store up to six phone numbers as presets for speed dialing.
    • Phone Book: The phone book in your Bluetooth enabled cellular phone will be transferred automatically when the phone is paired to this unit. After finding the number you want to call in the phone book from the head unit, you can select the entry and make the call. If a lot of numbers are registered in the phone book, you can search for a phone number by the contact person's name alphabetically (A-Z).
    • Call Log: The 80 most recent calls dialed, received, and missed are stored in memory. You can browse them and call numbers from these lists.

External Microphone: During your wireless phone call, you can talk into the head unit's included external microphone, and listen to the other party through the vehicle's speaker system. The external microphone provides better performance in noisy environments than the integrated microphone found on the front-panel of many aftermarket or factory radios. The microphone features a 13' cord that plugs into the back of the radio, and comes with an adjustable visor-mount clip. The microphone measures 0.475" (diameter) x 1.445" (depth).

Note: The unit is not equipped with an integrated microphone. The external microphone must be installed for Bluetooth hands-free communication.

Wireless Audio Streaming: The Pioneer DEH-6400BT also supports wireless audio playback (AD2P) and control (AVRCP) of a Bluetooth enabled audio player or smartphone. The DEH-6400BT will be able to control basic playback features; such as Play, Pause, Stop, Previous track, and Next track.

Note: When an incoming call or outgoing call is in progress from your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone, audio streaming will be paused so you can take your call. Once the call is finished, your streaming music will resume.

    USB/iPod/Aux Connection

Front-Panel USB Input: The unit's front-panel USB (type-A) port allows you to connect a USB portable audio player or USB flash memory that is USB Mass Storage Class compliant. Your USB memory device must be formatted in FAT 12/16/32. Up to 8 directories, 500 folders, and 15000 files per USB device are recognized by this unit. The unit is compatible with ID3 Tags and will display artist, folder, file, and album name, plus comments.

    • MP3/WMA Files: MP3 files with a bit rate from 8-320 kbps, WMA files with a constant bit rate from 48-320 kbps, and WMA files with a variable bit rate from 48-384 kbps are supported.
    • WAV Files: 8-bit and 16-bit WAV (LPCM) files with a sampling frequency between 16 to 48 kHz are supported.

Note: USB portable audio players that can be charged via USB will be charged when plugged into the CD receiver's USB port (1A) and the vehicle's ignition switch is set to ACC or On. This unit cannot recognize USB devices via a USB hub.

iPod Direct Connection: The Pioneer DEH-6400BT's front-panel USB port can be used to connect your iPod/iPhone to the head unit, via Pioneer's dock connector-to-USB cable (130CDIU50 / 130CDIU51, sold separately) or the dock connector-to-USB cable which comes with your iPod/iPhone. The DEH-6400BT supports audio playback, music navigation, information display, and charging of your compatible iPod/iPhone.

Note: If you have an iPod nano (7th gen), iPod touch (5th gen), or iPhone 5; use the Lighting-to-USB cable that came with your Apple device to connect to the head unit.

iPod DAC Bypass: The USB connection allows your iPod/iPhone's stored music to be loaded instantly to the head unit and sound quality to be maximized through the head unit's 24-bit D/A converter, allowing for a Signal to Noise ratio up to 94dB. The Pioneer head unit supports audio playback of music, podcasts, audiobooks, and music apps stored on your iPod or iPhone.

iPod Control: You can choose to operate your iPod/iPhone through the head unit's front-panel controls, from its clickwheel/touchscreen, or via a streamed app from your iPhone.

    • Head Unit: From the head unit, you can browse your iPod/iPhone's music library by Artist, Album, Song, Genre, Playlist, Composer, Podcast, or Audiobook (your iPod/iPhone's clickwheel or touchscreen will be locked). Once you have selected a category, you can search each category alphabetically. In addition, the head unit offers Link Search, which allows you to play songs related to the currently playing song. Link Search lets the head unit create an album list of the currently playing artist, a song list of the currently playing album, or an album list of the currently playing genre. You can also select Random & Repeat functions for a certain song or specific folder.
    • iPod: In iPod mode, you can navigate the stored music on your iPod/iPhone from its clickwheel or touchscreen.
    • App Mode: App mode lets you listen to your favorite music apps, such as Pandora, iHeartRadio, SiriusXM, Last.fm, Rhapsody, & Slacker from your iPhone (iOS 3.0+) through the Pioneer head unit and your vehicle's speakers. Not all apps will be compatible with App Mode and App Mode will provide only limited (basic), if any, control over the app. Available controls may include - Play/Pause & Skip Previous/Next.

iPod Display: The head unit will display your iPod/iPhone's stored music file information, including - Track number, Folder number, Elapsed playing time, Song title, Artist name, and Album title.

Note: There is no music information displayed when this unit is set to 'App Mode'. Instead, all music information will be displayed on your iPod/iPhone's LCD screen. The head unit's LCD will only display the text - 'App Mode'.

iPod Charging: The head unit's USB connection provides 1A of current to power and charge your connected iPod/iPhone when your vehicle's ignition switch is set to the 'ACC' or 'On' position. This unit will not charge the Apple iPad.

Note: If your iPod/iPhone has no initial battery charge, then the unit will not recognize it.

Note: Apple iPod/iPhone software updates may change functionality results. If you download a newer software version, you may need to reset the head unit and your iPod/iPhone to regain functionality. If this doesn't work, you may need to wait until a newer software update is available.

Auxiliary Input: The DEH-6400BT is equipped with a front-panel 3.5mm stereo minijack auxiliary input for connecting external components, such as a portable MP3 player. AUX must be turned on in the setup menu in order to be selected as a source.

    Disc Playback

Compatible Discs: The Pioneer DEH-6400BT supports playback of CD-Audio, CD-Text, CD-R, and CD-RW discs.

MP3/WMA Playback: This unit can play MP3 and WMA files recorded on, CD-R and CD-RW discs in ISO9660 Level 1/Level 2, Joliet, and Romeo formats. MP3 files with a bit rate from 8-320 kbps, WMA files with a constant bit rate from 48-320 kbps, and WMA files with a variable bit rate from 48-384 kbps are supported. The unit is compatible with ID3 Tags and will display artist, folder, file, and album name. Up to 8 directories, 99 folders and 999 files per disc are recognized by this unit.

WAV File Playback: The DEH-6400BT offers playback of audio WAV files recorded onto CD-R and CD-RW discs. The head unit supports 8-bit and 16-bit LPCM (Linear PCM) WAV files with a sampling frequency between 16 to 48 kHz.

File/Track Name List: The Name List feature displays a list of MP3/WMA folders and tracks on a loaded CD or connected USB device, so you can easily access your music. The Name List will also display the list of track titles on a CD Text disc.

Off Insert/Eject: A CD disc can be inserted or ejected with the power off. When a disc is inserted with the power off, the unit will automatically power up and begin playback.

Auto Off Eject: When you eject a disc, the unit will automatically power off (unless you switch sources before ejecting the disc).

Installation Angle: Optimum CD playback performance is obtained when the unit is installed at an angle of less than 60-degrees.

    Audio Section

24 Bit D/A Converter: The Pioneer in-dash head unit utilizes a 24-bit digital to analog converter for superior CD sound quality.

MOSFET Amplifier: The DEH-6400BT is equipped with a MOSFET amplifier. Compared to conventional power supplies, the MOSFET amplification circuit is smaller and more efficient, and it delivers increased power with less distortion and absolutely zero on/off switching noise. More power means louder and cleaner music at higher volumes because you're not pushing the limits of the amplification circuit.

CEA2006 Compliant: The power specifications for the DEH-6400BT are compliant with the CEA2006 Mobile Amplifier Power Testing and Measurement standards from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). These standards were developed as a way to equitably compare power specs from model to model and between manufacturers. The power output specs for the DEH-6400BT are as follows:

    • CEA2006 Specs: 14 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20Hz-20kHz, 1% THD-N)
    • Continuous Power Output: 22 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 50Hz-15kHz, 5% THD)
    • Maximum Power Output: 50 watts x 4 channels (or 50 watts x 2 channels at 4 ohms + 70 watts x 1 channel at 2 ohms for subwoofer)

3-Way Rotary Commander: The Pioneer DEH-6400BT features a 3-Way Rotary Commander for easy control. You can scroll through your music and audio settings with greater ease using the 3-way rotary commander.

Advanced Sound Retriever: The Advanced Sound Retriever automatically enhances compressed audio and restores the original richness of the recording. Hear the detail, warmth, and clarity, the way the artist intended it, from all of your highly compressed MP3 and WMA files stored on your USB device, iPod/iPhone, and portable media players. By restoring data (especially higher frequencies) that tends to get lost in the digital compression process, Pioneer's Advanced Sound Retriever technology enhances audio reproduction nearly all the way up to 20 kHz frequencies

EEQ (Easy EQ): The DEH-6400BT is equipped with a 3-band EQ with 6 preset EQ settings: Powerful, Dynamic, Vocal, Natural, Custom, and EQ Flat. The Custom band can be adjusted as follows:

    • Bass: +/- 6dB at 100 Hz
    • Mid: +/- 6dB at 1 kHz
    • Treble: +/- 6dB at 10 kHz

Loudness: The Loudness feature compensates for deficiencies in the low and high sound ranges at low volume. You can set the Loudness feature to Low, Mid, High, or Off.

Source Level Adjustment (SLA): This function lets you adjust the volume level of each source to prevent radical changes in volume when switching between sources. Settings are based on the volume level of the FM tuner, which remains unchanged. Each source can be independently adjusted from -4dB to +4dB.

2.0-Volt Preamp Outputs: The Pioneer DEH-6400BT features two pairs of 2.0-volt preamp outputs. The unit's rear preamp output can be configured as a fading rear-channel output or a non-fading subwoofer output with a low-pass filter, phase adjustment, and output level control. When configured as the subwoofer output, you can select the frequency of the 18dB/octave low pass filter (50, 63, 80, 100, or 125 Hz), select the subwoofer phase (normal/reverse), and the subwoofer gain (+6 to -24).

Switchable Rear Channel/Subwoofer Speaker Output: The rear speaker outputs can be set to provide full range output with full fading capability, or they can be set to provide non-fading subwoofer (low-pass) output. When the rear speaker outputs are set to subwoofer mode, the rear preamp outputs also switch from full range to subwoofer outputs. When set for subwoofer operation, you can connect the rear speaker leads directly to two small 4-ohm passive subwoofers or a dual voice coil sub with 4-ohm voice coils. If you prefer to use a single 2-ohm subwoofer, you can connect the woofer to one set of speaker leads, leaving the other set of rear leads disconnected. The maximum output provided when a 2-ohm load is connected to one set of leads is 70 watts.

    Radio Functions

Supertuner IIID AM/FM Tuner: The Supertuner IIID features Feed Forward Control, which avoids multi-path interference. This pre-detection of interference enables quick filter control and results in less distortion. In addition, the Supertuner IIID creates enhanced stereo during multi-path interference, unlike conventional tuners that collapse to mono. Digital processing reduces distortion, and improves Signal-to-Noise Ratio and stereo separation. Advanced analog technology improves signal processing sensitivity.

RDS: The Radio Data System (RDS) feature displays radio broadcast information such as artist, title, and album when listening to compatible AM/FM stations.

BSM (Best Stations Memory): The BSM (Best Stations Memory) function lets you automatically store the six strongest stations under preset buttons 1-6 of the currently tuned band. The tuner has 3 FM banks and 1 AM bank. You can store 6 presets for each bank giving you a total of 18 FM presets and 6 AM presets.

Local Tuning: Local seek tuning lets you tune in only those radio stations with sufficiently strong signals for good reception. There are 4 level of sensitivity for FM and two levels for AM. The higher settings allow reception of only the strongest stations, while lower settings let you receive progressively weaker stations.

    Display Features

Detachable Face Security: The Pioneer DEH-6400BT in-dash CD receiver features Detachable Face Security. A face-fixing screw is supplied for making the face non-detachable, if desired.

Note: No face case is included with this unit. An optional soft face case (142DFC1X, sold separately) can be purchased for this unit.

Color Customization: Color Customization lets the user match their receiver illumination to their vehicle's interior lighting. Over 210,000 colors are available to match the illumination of almost any car. The button illumination and display illumination colors can be customized separately for an endless number of color combinations. You can select from 27 preset colors (White to Rose), customize an illumination color (by adjusting Red, Blue, and Green brightness levels), or scan through various color settings (All/Warm/Ambient/Calm/Custom).

Ever Scroll: When the Ever Scroll feature is set to On, recorded text information scrolls continuously on the display. It will auto-scroll up to 64 characters. Set this feature to Off if you prefer the information to scroll only once.

Display Illumination/Clock Display: When the Clock Display has been turned on, pressing and holding the Source button turns off audio output, but the clock display remains on. When the Clock Display has been turned off, pressing and holding the source button turns the unit off completely. Even if you have turned the radio completely off you can view the clock display by pressing the clock button. The clock will then remain On until you turn it back Off. When the unit is On you can select between the clock display or the audio track/tuner display.

    Remote Control

Wireless Remote Control: The DEH-6400BT comes with an IR wireless remote control. The remote allows you to control the volume, switch between sources, pause the CD, change the display, and adjust the audio. The mute button allows you to quickly lower the volume by about 90% (function that cannot be performed from the front panel). In addition, the remote provides answer/end phone controls for Bluetooth.

Steering Wheel Remote Compatibility: The head unit features an OEM steering wheel remote control input on the rear of the unit that lets you keep your vehicle's factory radio steering wheel remote controls when used with an optional steering wheel audio control adapter (sold separately). Please consult Crutchfield's Outfit My Car to see if your vehicle is compatible.

Turned my car into something slightly more modern

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I decided to install it myself with the included instructions and kit. It took a little while, but only because I am fastidious. Sound better than my factory installed system, plays CD's and MP3 CD's flawlessly, but I mostly connect via bluetooth and my iPhone. As soon as they see each other, the music plays from where it last left off without having to touch anything! Phone calls are fine, though sometimes folks on the other end claim they can't hear me. I placed the microphone on the dash just behind the steering wheel, though at some point I'll move it to the visor just to see if it makes a difference. Overall, I recommend it as an inexpensive solution to modernize older cars.
    Pros:
    Audio, colors are pretty cool
    Cons:
Hard to see in bright light

Performance and features big bang for the buck

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this radio to work with my iPhone 4s and it has been a perfect match. Blue tooth connected without a hitch. Reception and sound quality are a big improvement over the original unit in my 2002 Honda Odyssey. My seven year old grandson really likes the multi-color display, but this old man prefers just plain green. I installed the unit in about six hours having never done this before, but then spent another whole morning learning how to operate it. If only the instructions would have explained the SRC button up front, it would have shortened the learning curve. I still don't know what SRC means. Maybe it's "Seriously Required Control". If I had had it installed by a knowledgable technician, I probably would have been given some basic instructions and been up to speed quickly.
    Pros:
A solid full featured replacement CD,Bluetooth, smart phone, radio. An excellent value.
    Cons:
The instructions are great after you've learned how to operate the unit. The Demo startup program gets in the way of learing how to operate the unit. Finally, yes the display fades away in the bright of day, but I haven't found it to be a problem.

Installed within an hour on my '06 GMC Canyon. The mic took a little longer but I mounted it behind the steering wheel. Everyone I call can hear me and I can hear them fine! My Samsung galaxy s3 connects just fine!! Beats spending $500 for the same unit at a big box store. Great sound, easy install, what's not to love?

    Quick, Full Featured, Easy Install

Written By KidsDad, West Chester, PA on Tuesday, October 02, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Purchased this unit along with the install kit. Normally, I wouldn't even consider attempting a radio head unit replacement on a weeknight, but I know I can trust Crutchffield to deliver only the highest quality. Within 3 hours, we had the old unit out, the new unit in, everything buttoned up, and sounding great. Now, my son has hands free calling in his car with voice dialing / music over bluetooth with his iPhone. All he has to do is press one button on his phone and tell his phone what he wants. The rest happens automatically between the iPhone (3gs) and this unit. I shopped for over 90 minutes trying to find a better package of install kit and head unit - I could have saved maybe $5, but I would never have had the confidence that all the pieces would work together - nice job Crutchfield.
    Pros:
Easy install, good sound, HANDSFREE Calling and Bluetooth Music Streaming!!!
    Cons:
You'll need to read the instruction manual to take advantage of all the settings, but this unit does almost as much as the $700 unit I put in my father's truck about 8 months ago.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This player plays music wonderfully and the tuner is outstanding. However, I put it in my 96 Ford truck and the display is completely unreadable duting the day. The high gloss plastic face works better as a mirror to see out the passenger window. This is true even after I have taken off my sunglasses. I can choose thousands of colors of text and buttons that I can only see at night. I am serious about not being able to change stations, pick songs or see the time. If it's more important to play with text colors at night you'll love this player.

Great radio, easy install with Crutchfield Instructions

Written By BruceE, Omaha NE on Tuesday, September 18, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed in 2004 Ford Explorer when factory radio just quit. Installation was easy with the Crutchfield kit. Install took less than an hour. Radio is excellent and sound is much better than premium factory radio. The Pioneer manual is pretty much useless and it took a lot of playing around to figure out how to configure various options. Main volume button is too small and difficult to rotate. Controls are not obvious. External mic, bluetooth, usb on front, good tuner, cd player, simple pushbutton presets make it a good value.
    Pros:
Easy install, excellent sound. Great features for the money.
    Cons:
Useless Pioneer manual, controls are not obvious, menu system is arcane and not intuitive. Main volume control is too small to easily turn.

Lacks support for Android, no USB playlists

Written By Jim V., Montreal, QC, Canada on Monday, September 17, 2012

Does NOT play *.m3u playlists off a USB key. Does NOT play from Android phones through USB (Pioneer Connect app for android is USELESS). Flawless USB connectivity with the iphone 4 I used to have, though. Bluetooth audio and calls work well with both iOS and Android, which saves this deck from a 1-star rating.

Ipods are not the only mp3 players out there, Pioneer! If they fixed their Android connect app, this would be an easy 4-star deck.
    Pros:
Good iOS connectivity, good Bluetooth connectivity.
    Cons:
LACKS Android support for USB (Pioneer Connect app for Android does not work for anyone according to the Google Play store), NO playlist support from a USB key.

    Pros:

Very nice head unit. we have them in three of our cars now and are very satified with them all. One con is that the BTHF does not always hook up right away, but it's only about 5% of the time. Sound quality is good when matched with a quality pair of speakers.
    Pros:

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This unit was an exceptional addition to my smart phone usage while driving. I know the features included in my Galaxy II Epic Touch are responsible for many of the slick features like dimming the streaming audio sound for navigation directions, but the stereo cuts off the audio program for phone call usage and then resumes after the call is done. Very cool. I am a loyal Pioneer guy, and this head has all the features I have grown used to from the Pioneer line. The high functionality of the unit is great, and the low price was a pleasant bonus.... stop messin around and GET ONE!!!
    Pros:
Affordable, easy to install with Crutchfield's install guides and adapters, interfaced well with my Galaxy II Epic Touch
    Cons:
Display is kinda dim, and the Bluetooth does not connect microphone on the first try, menu is cumbersome with the single button operation

Bluetooth with a seperate mic in a stereo of this quality is just what I'd been looking for. And at this price point, its outstanding. It's given new life to my factory speakers. I can hear bass. Tried a unit with mic built into the front cover and it was crap. The seperate mic is a huge improvement. It's not as good as a wired headset, but it works well enough to call the wife on my way home from work (she's not listening anyway).
    Pros:
    Bluetooth streaming. Sound quality. Cheap.
    Cons:
Limited Bluetooth controls. No smart phone app support. Display can be tough to see on sunny days (make the color white for best results).

It's a stupid looking thing that has small buttons which makes it harder to use while looking at the road. The volume knob is hard to use because it's too tight and too close to the other buttons. The initial demo mode is a pain. The instructions are somewhat poor. Installed quickly and fit properly. Sound is fine.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Overall a good product with a few user interface issues that are a bit annoying. Not a problem for me because I'm a techno-dweeb, and an old geezer, but for those who are not, it may be a bit more of an issue and will take time getting used to. Background: this replaced the factory radio in a 2003 Ford Taurus wagon - so it is a major upgrade in performance. 1st, the display: In bright sunlight you must have the brightness turned all the way up and it still isn't quite enough. I'd give up the gazillion colors for one that is bright enough. Then at night the display is too bright if you have it set for bright sunlight. It has a dimmer function but it doesn't dim anywhere near enough for night driving. 2nd, On/Off. You don't press the volume control for on/off, you press the little "source" button at 2 o'clock from the volume control and you have to hold it in for a second for it to understand that you are turning it off. Bad choice. 3rd, seek buttons. The default mode is seeking by preset stations. Should default to manual. I love the USB input. It remembers where you left off if you remove it and plug it back in later. Overall: a good value with some user interface issues that may give the techno-challenged some frustration
    Pros:
    Performance Value
    Cons:
    User interface, setup

A LOT of Receiver for the Price!

Written By DickF, The Triangle, NC on Saturday, August 25, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The sound quality on this is great - far superior to the original factory unit (that was supposedly made by Alpine according to the Honda parts listing). I kept the factory speakers and even with those the clarity of the music and sharpness of the voice is excellent. I can hear highs that I couldn't before and the lows have some energy so you can really hear it. This thing would probably be truly exceptional with upgraded speakers. I chose Pioneer as I'd had good experience with Pioneer car audio many many years ago and I must say that I am not disappointed now. From my point of view it would be hard to get a better unit for the money.

Works great with my iPhone, easy to use and can control from the receiver, remote or the iPhone - how cool is that? The Bluetooth audio streaming is great, but I'm not planning on using the phone feature at the moment so I can't say.

The controls are fairly easy to use - so many options to choose from! The icons on the main controls are clear and large enough to be legible from the drivers seat. Getting to the main options menu is only a push of a button away - just be safe and don't do it while you're driving! I really like the remote, it's relatively small and gives you good control of the receiver. It's laid out nicely and you can move through the presets, change to the next song or adjust the volume without taking your eyes off of the road.
    Pros:
The sound it great, the price is excellent.
    Cons:
The manual is marginally useful (aren't they all anymore?). The preset buttons could be larger.

I looked at a few receivers on the site and this one was one of the top ones I had to choose from. Mike (my advisor) suggested this one as a sure hit. And that it is! I had it installed by a family friend in less than an hour and I was up and running. The sound is WONDERFUL. Crisp highs and clean lows. Right now I have my bass set to -2 and it's STILL very powerful. The bluetooth is awesome! Very clear phone calls and love the ease of playing music from my iPhone through the controls. The remote control is another handy feature. I highly recommend this receiver.

    Awesome deck overall

Written By Dan Q, Los Angeles, CA on Wednesday, August 22, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've been using the deck for about a week now and I'm overall impressed. I normally use BT streaming for my spotify app and everyone sounds crisp and clean. It almost sounds like I added new speakers to the already existing OEM set I have in my Civic. I live in CA where it's normally sunny and this posses a problem for the deck in terms of display. It's extremely hard to read anything that going on in the deck, and if you plan to change the station, you best have your presets already in place. Otherwise, once setup, BT controls like pause, play, next, back, can be handled from the deck as well as phone calls as well as auto connecting as soon as you turn on your ignition (assuming you've let your phone do so). I haven't actually received a call via BT so I can comment as to how good it works. I found reception on the radio tuner great and no problems picking up stations. I've used the USB mostly for charging and can't comment as to the plug and play feature of the device nor te iProduct sync. I installed this deck myself and for a first time, with a little patience and the right tools this was a 1.5 hr task.
    Pros:
Great BT streaming w/ no hiccups whatsoever. Radio tuner sounds great Great customization
    Cons:
Super hard to read display in the daytime but who's going to be looking at their deck while you drive

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought this unit to replace a factory unit that had seen better days. Easy to install and sounds great. Been thinking about upgrading stock systm for some time and am now glad that I did, what a difference. Now I can hear my music over the road noise. The sound is richer at a much lower volume.
    Pros:
Good quality built unit. Easy installation with Master sheet. Advisor was helpful with the questions that I had.
    Cons:
Pioneer's instructions were somewhat vague. Many wires to splice out for my installation, even with the new power cord from Crutchfield. This installation was not done at home and done on a time schedule, had vto drivre home with the unit in demo mode - very distracting. To program it I finally had to pull the fuse and start over, no problems then.

BT streaming sounds great. Too often the bluetooth streaming of music is not rich, this deck fixes that! Phone works well to. Pioneer quality!
    Pros:
    Great sound
    Cons:
lots of features that are intimidating at first, you will get it though.

    Great radio!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this unit because I play music from my phone through my car a lot, and I was looking for something that would do the job better than a cassette adapter could do. The hands free calling was a plus too, and it powers my Pioneer speakers a lot better than my factory radio does. I'm a college kid, so I can't quite afford the 600-700 dollar head units that they got on the market now, so I figured I would go with this unit. I am not disappointed at all by my purchase. Installation was cake thanks to Crutchfield and their awesome mastersheet. I ran into a few little bumps installing the unit but they were nothing I couldn't figure out myself after a bit of thinking and referring to the manual. Anyway, on to the features. The bluetooth works just as good, if not, better than my cassette adapter did. It is a lot more convenient too since I don't have to fiddle with my phone to change tracks, since my radio does it for me when I press the arrow buttons! After some tinkering, I got the sound the way I like it, and it sounds great. The only thing I can think of at the moment that would make it better is if the controls were a bit more user friendly. If it weren't for the manual, I'd be really confused on how to operate my radio and change the settings. I haven't seen any issues with daylight obscuring the screen yet, but we'll see eventually if that happens. This has made my old van one step cooler, Thanks crutchfield!
    Pros:
Awesome sound quality (I have high end speakers, I can't say if it sounds good on factory speakers or not) Lots of ways to customize how your music sounds The unit itself is highly customizable Hands free calling Bluetooth audio
    Cons:
Confusing to understand at first, but you'll get the hang of it if you look at the manual and get used to having it in your car

    Subaru Forest Installation

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I finally decided to upgrade the casette deck in my 2000 Forester. Rather than paying someone, I thought to do it myself. Installation of this receiver went well with the Master Sheet instructions and matching audio connector. I wanted to pay MP3 and Audible Books without the cassette input. I also figured to try a bluetooth connection with my cell phone to end the fumbling for a phone under a coat and seat belt.

The install went well and I am getting good FM reception, playing MP3 audio from two players and making cell phone calls. I decide not to go to high end receiver as this is a twelve year old car driven locally so I am living with a dot matrix display and individual preset buttons. There is no integration with steer wheel controls. I'm happy with the improvement and hope for a long run with the receiver and car.
    Pros:
Easy installation, Bluetooth connectivity to cell phone.
    Cons:
Dot Matrix display and small buttons.

Great 2001 Honda Accord factory radio replacment

Written By Pilot06-Accord01, Antioch, CA on Friday, August 03, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Replaced factory radio on 2001 Honda Accord. Radio trim panel removal was straightforward, but to install mic over the rear-view mirror, I had to remove the A-pillar panel, which was a little challenging. To remove A-pillar panel, first remove door weather stripping, then pull hard to remove A-pillar panel.

The sound quality is awesome using the factory speakers, I can hardly believe this is the same car. Bluetooth call and audio streaming quality is great. The iPOD and aux connections work as advertised. The radio controls take a little getting used to, but are fairly easy to navigate through once you get the hang of it.
    Pros:
Decent price. Sound quality. Hands free calling, bluetooth audio streaming, iPOD, and aux connections.
    Cons:
Does not include case for detachable face plate.

I installed this unit in a 2004 Toyota Celica GTS that had the JBL premium audio package. At first I was unsure about replacing the head unit and losing the factory amp fear of possibly losing sound quality. I was blown away by the over all quality of sound that this unit produced. My speakers actually sounded clearer and louder than before. The Bluetooth audio streaming works excellent as does the Bluetooth phone features. I also got the factory amp by-pass harness to go with this and it is something i highly recommend if you are installing in a 2004-05 GTS Toyota Celica with the premium sound system.
    Pros:
BT audio streaming, BT phone features, USB and AUX in the front and tons of audio options. Great for iPhone users.
    Cons:
Have not had the unit long enough to find anything major, but for the price and its features i cant complain.

This stereo is great one! Just installed it in my 2003 Nissan Sentra GXE. Awesome value for what it offers. This replaced my stock nissan stereo and it is 100x better. The sound quality and easy interface makes driving much more enjoyable. I would recommend this stereo to anyone wanted to not spend to much but still wants AWESOME song and the ability to use an iPod and hands free calling

I was very impressed with the sound quality of the stereo. I mainly purchased the radio for my 2001 Silverado; installlation went very easy and the system sounds better than the system that came with the truck. The Blue Tooth functions great and the system is well worth the price.
    Pros:
Blue tooth functions great, USB is great.
    Cons:
    None yet!

VERY HAPPY WITH THIS DEH 6400 BT ,INSTALLED IT MYSELF IN MY 2000 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE . SOUND VERY NICE WITH STOCK SPEAKERS. GOOD VALUE. NOW ,I CAN LISTEN TO MY IPOD WITH OUT A CASSETTE ADAPTER. I LIKE THE FACT THAT MY IPOD BATTERY WILL STAY CHARGED AFTER A LONG TRIP. THE INSTRUCTION MANUAL NEED TO BE IMPROVED,I HAVE TO USE A MAGNIFY GLASS TO READ THE INSTRUCTIONS.
