Our take on the Pioneer AVIC-8000NEX

Meet Pioneer's flagship navigation receiver

Pioneer's 2014 lineup of navigation receivers spotlights the NEX interface, which provides drivers with intuitive, responsive fingertip command of the action onscreen. They also offer a wealth of entertainment and integration options, including some impressive real-time, smartphone-connected navigation extras that are coming down the road.

Pioneer AVIC-8000NEX navigaiton receiver

Smoooth, multi-touch control

The AVIC-8000NEX DVD/navigation receiver boasts a glass-like 7" capacitive touchscreen interface, giving you interactivity and control like you have with your smartphone or tablet. And that's just the beginning of a wealth of advanced features that'll have every other owner of a 4" tall receiver green with envy. You can pinch-and-zoom map displays, swipe menu items, and touch slide through screens quickly with fingertip gestures rather than searching for specific areas on the screen to find the "next" or "back" arrow. And the display is motorized so you can find the perfect angle for interacting from your driving position.

The NEX interface lets you choose musical sources with ease, and you can integrate your smartphone to get the most out of your travel-friendly apps. Like to talk to Siri®? You can communicate with her through this Pioneer without taking your eyes off the road. iPhone and Android™ smartphone users also get Pioneer's AppRadio mode for in-dash command of several important apps, while Android owners can employ MIrrorLink™ technology to navigate a car-friendly version of their phone's display right on the receiver's screen (optional interface cables required for smartphone connections).

Pioneer's innovative AppRadioLIVE streamlines your app info and functions into one easy-to-use interface. You'll enjoy quick access to your music, media, calendar, and other sources you subscribe to, just by downloading the AppRadioLIVE app and syncing your services. AppRadioLIVE works with your apps to provide visual map guidance and access to points of interest, as well as the ability to search for concerts, shows, and other local events of interest. And you can show several sources of information simultaneously, quickly shifting from one to another with a touch of your finger.

Note: AppRadio Mode and AppRadioLIVE are currently not compatible with iOS 8 due to stability and display issues. Please see "Details" for more information.

Apple CarPlay™

Pioneer's the first on deck with CarPlay in aftermarket car stereos. CarPlay integrates your iPhone into the driving experience in a new, seamless interface, putting iPhone content at the driver's fingertips with minimal distraction. That means easy access to your music library, your phone, messages, navigation, and many third party streaming music apps, too. Learn more at A firmware update is required — now available at Pioneer's website.

Guidance you can count on

The AVIC-8000NEX provides stellar door-to-door navigation, with maps of the entire U.S., Canada, and Puerto Rico, plus nearly 8 million searchable points of interest.  A built-in traffic tuner presents timely reports on congestion along your route in most metropolitan areas, while text-to-speech voice prompts announce actual street names at turns. You'll also have 3D representations of landmarks and buildings keeping you oriented in urban areas.

Built-in Bluetooth®

Like most navigation receivers, the AVIC-8000NEX gives you a reliable Bluetooth connection to your compatible smartphone. You'll be able to carry on hands-free conversations using the receiver's included external microphone. And it'll work with most phones for wireless streaming audio, thanks to its advanced Hands-Free Profile technology. You'll also get smartphone app control through your devices:

  • iPhone: With a separate cable, you'll get control of your Aha Radio app through the receiver's touchscreen when connected. App Mode also gives you limited control over other select apps on your iPhone. You can control your iPhone's Pandora® app wirelessly with a Bluetooth connection, including station creation.

  • Android: You'll get control of your smartphone's Pandora (with station creation) and Aha Radio apps through Bluetooth, so no cable needed.

HD Radio® tuner

HD Radio

The AVIC-8000NEX also features an HD Radio tuner. You'll enjoy much-improved AM/FM sound quality when you're tuned into a local participating station, and there's no subscription required — just tune it in like a regular radio station.

Connections and A/V options galore

No matter how you want to enjoy your media, the AVIC-8000NEX has you covered. It's got an HDMI input for Android connectivity, plus two rear USB inputs and an SD™ card slot for your favorite digital tunes, including FLAC lossless files. This receiver will also play all your CDs and DVDs, including discs loaded with music files, while a rear A/V input offers a connection for any other audio/video sources.

The high-resolution 7" WVGA screen is perfect for viewing video from DVDs or other sources when you're parked. You can tap into video content on your iPod or smartphone with the help of the correct cable (not included). When you're on the road, you can play movies through a rear-seat monitor for your passengers, so they can stay entertained during long road trips. Dual-zone capability lets you enjoy the radio or another audio source up front while your passengers watch their favorite movies in the back. Pioneer's MIXTRAX technology gives your digital files unique DJ treatments with effects and nonstop blends that'll turn your car into a mobile dance party.

No matter what you're listening to, you can count on exceptional sound from the AVIC-8000NEX, with its a fingertip swipe-enabled 13-band graphic equalizer, plus built-in Auto EQ and Time Alignment for optimized listening. Use the high- and low-pass crossover's adjustable points and slopes to fine-tune the sound to your tastes, and engage the Advanced Sound Retriever to fill in the missing "gaps" in your compressed music files to restore them to CD-like clarity.

Expand your system

Why struggle with stations fading away as you travel? You can hook up a satellite radio tuner (not included) to this receiver and access the wide variety of entertainment, sports, news, and commercial-free music satellite radio provides — and your favorite stations are always there. You can also connect up to two cameras, so you can see more of what's near your vehicle when getting in and out of tight spots. If you're looking to add subs and amps, you can take advantage of three sets of high-voltage preamp outputs.

Want to keep your car's steering wheel audio controls?

In most vehicles, you can use an adapter to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this Pioneer stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and the Pioneer, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. Check the "Accessories" tab for compatible adapters.

iDatalink Maestro lets you keep your factory extras

If your vehicle comes with factory add-ons like Ford SYNC®, GM OnStar®, or Chrysler Uconnect™, you don't have to worry about losing your favorite conveniences to get navigation and better sound — the AVIC-8000NEX offers compatibility you won't find in many other aftermarket radios, thanks to the iDatalink Maestro module (not included).

For Ford SYNC systems, you'll be able to retain voice-controlled features, steering wheel audio controls, and factory audio functions. For GM vehicles, you'll keep your steering wheel audio controls, your factory amp, safety warning chimes, and OnStar, if present, while Chrysler owners will get to keep all their Uconnect functionality.

iDataLink Maestro note: A firmware update from Pioneer (available here) may be required to utilize iDataLink features.

iPod/smartphone note: If you're going to use your iPod or smartphone with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for compatibility information.

Bluetooth note: Use of this receiver's Bluetooth features will depend upon your phone's Bluetooth capabilities. Learn more in our article explaining Bluetooth profiles.

I really like this deck. It does just about everything and is easy to use. It sounds awesome and was not very difficult to install. Only thing lacking is there was no remote. The new AVIC-8100NEX does have this feature.

I really like this deck. It does just about everything and is easy to use. It sounds awesome and was not very difficult to install. Only thing lacking is there was no remote. The new AVIC-8100NEX does have this feature.

Pros: Everything. Easy of installation and the amount of features this deck has. HD radio works great and the picture quality while playing a DVD is great! It is a ultimate deck

    Cons: None what so ever

Cool features, bluetooth works great, mirror mode for the HDMI input awesome feature, only wish we didn't need multiple lightning cables for the iPhone. Need one for the apple carplay and another for the HDMI mirror mode also. The HD radio signal are pretty weak in my opinion. Overall very pleased with the radio. Could've brought a small cloth to wipe the screen from the finger prints.

    Pros: Navigation, EQ, Apple Carplay

Cons: Multiple cables needed for using all its features(iPhone)

Hi everyone well to tell you the true this is the best radio I've every had.....its no comparison to the radio I uninstalled which was an online special (which are the worst radios on the market)so far I like the simplicity of going from one venue to another, I know their are many audiofileres that will break down the little increments but lets be honest are you really going to use every detail on any product if you think so....... your lying to yourself lol. Bottom line this a great radio for the price........actually awesome!! . I don't want to get out of my car lol!!!

Pros: easy application maneuverability, very user friendly

Cons: no remote.......but who cares lol, but if there are any I will update

Pros: Easy to operate, very user friendly and customizable.

Cons: Would be great if they had a screen protector included.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I can't give this 5 stars yet since I've only had it installed for about 2 weeks. I will say it's running great without any major issues. Touchscreen is VERY responsive. Only small issue i've had is that the GPS takes up to a minute to find a signal at my house (roof mounted antenna). Embedded GPS that came with my Mazda 6 has a signal within seconds, same with my portable Garmin GPS. Other than that it does really well once it has a signal.

Pros: Great look/feet, responsive touchscreen, well worth the cost! Crutchfield support is amazing if you need help installing!

Cons: Locating GPS signal takes up to 1 minute (roof mounted antenna). Portable GPS and embedded Mazda 6 GPS find it in seconds in the same location

    Amazing deck

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I had to give the product 4 stars, even though I'd love to give it 5, but there is one annoying issue I can't resolve. I load videos on the SD card and can play them to the rear seat entertainment system and that works great, until I plug in my iPhone, then the video stops and the SD option is greyed out in sources. So, in essence, one can't play videos from an SD card for rear seat viewers and use Carplay or any other iPhone options at the same time. Interestingly enough, you can play music from an SD card while your iPhone is connected. Go figure. That one issue aside, I love this deck. Amazing features. Incredible functionality and customization. It does EVERYTHING. I connected steering wheel controls, OEM controls to Onstar, rear seat entertainment, and the backup camera. I could have connected another camera, auxiliary input, second camera input, etc.. Installation: I don't think Crutchfield did a good job here. Sure, there was a one page document explaining how to dismantle my dash to remove the old stereo, but the problem is, there were 5 sets of instructions for each of the integration pieces I ordered. Dash kit, Stereo, Wiring Harness, Steering Wheel Control, and OEM Integration. Attempting to put all of the directions together and figure out all of the connections (30-40), was an absolute nightmare. I consider this very complex. Not plug and play at all. No instructions for removing panels of your car required for USB Cable or GPS antenna installation.

Pros: Install Support: I have to say, I called Crutchfield tech support 4-5 times and every time got quick and knowledgable answers to my questions. I just wish the install instructions were so good I didn't have to call at all. Ability to play video from SD cards Carplay - AWESOME! Nav is absolutely great Screen clarity is fantastic and touch response is the best I've seen on touch screen car stereo's Sound is great Ability to customize options and configurations is fantastic. Value! SD card

Cons: Install - Support: Crutchfield needs a method to build a custom install document based on all of the information I entered about my vehicle and what I purchased. As an example, I had to call Crutchfield during the installation to find out if I had an external amplifier and if it was analog or digital. I also got a message about renewing XM on my dash after install. Another call to Crutchfield to find out how to disconnect the factory XM Can't play video from an SD card while iPhone is connected

Nice Unit Can't use all capabilities

James R from Washington on 7/5/2015

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Initial impressions of this unit are favorable. It is pretty, HD Radio works great, navigation works well, ties to iPod well, intuitive to operate. I just wish the unit was designed to be simpler and cleaner to install. I can't use the back up camera or the Bluetooth calls. I did not want take the interior apart to run the wires.

Pros: Pretty, intuitive to operate, HD Radio, navigation, iPod connectivity

Cons: Overly complex installation to use full connectivity.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great stereo all the bells and whistles. I love car play and android auto. Display is sharp and responsive. One thing I didn't realize but you cannot use Bluetooth connections when car play is enabled. So if you want to charge a second phone and stream music from another over Bluetooth you would have to shut the phone your charging off to disable car play. Not a huge problem but something I didn't realize. All in all this is a great unit.

Pros: CarPlay, android auto. Accurate and easy to use gps.

Cons: Can't use Bluetooth streaming and CarPlay at the same time.

    Great Features, Excellent Interface

    2013 Toyota Sienna
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I previously have had high end Kenwoods, but I bought this unit because of CarPlay (which works well). Both the Kenwood and the Pioneer units have lots of great features. The Pioneer interface, however, seems like it was designed to be used while driving at full speed on the highway, unlike the Kenwood units. For example, the buttons for the radio stations on the Pioneer are along the left side, closer to the driver. The unit's settings can be accessed quickly at any time and you can easily create Favorite settings to get to the ones you use often more quickly. The hard buttons along the bottom are designed so that you can feel them, without having to look at them. Whatever else you want to do can be reached quickly using just a few taps. I always thought that the Garmin maps on the Kenwood were great but the Pioneer's are equally good. Using any of the features on the Kenwoods always required lots of scrolling, swiping, several menu selections and several taps. The hard buttons all felt the same, so you had to look at them before using them. While dealing with all of this wouldn't have been a big deal if I were sitting at a desk, going through all of this to make any small change was a major distraction and pain in the you know where while I was driving. I'm glad I chose Pioneer.

Pros: CarPlay, fast and clear interface for all other features

Cons: No additional downloadable voices for Navigation.

    2008 Chevrolet Silverado
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is my first time purchasing a double din radio. I put it in my Silverado by myself. The first unit they sent me was faulty but they replaced it without question. Their tech support was great, they helped sort out a few minor wiring issues that I had done wrong. After I got it mounted it fired up like a charm. The Navi works good. I have an Android so I don't use the car play but it still works great with bluetooth calling and pandora. I hooked up an SD card and Ipod also. Sound quality is great (hooked up to after market pioneer speakers). I did put an anti-glare screen protector on mine.

    Pros: Great display. Great sound.

Cons: It a big ol' mess of wires to try in fit in that small space behind the unit.

    A disappointment.

    2011 Volkswagen Golf
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was looking for an upgrade to my 2011 Volkswagen Golf TDI's stock 6-disc touchscreen, to add navigation as well. I decided to take the plunge on the 8000NEX. I regret my decision and not doing further research. I've had the unit for three months now, and it's riddled with issues. Random reboots while driving, sometimes the unit doesn't power on, sometimes it powers on quickly while other times it's slow. If CarPlay is enabled (in other words my phone is plugged in), there's about a 25% chance the touchscreen on the unit will become unresponsive. CarPlay is very new, and as such I expected bugs; however the other parts of the unit are also buggy. The Nav maps Cannot be updated. Period. If you go through the website and download the newest maps, per the instructions, they don't upload to the unit. It's an admitted bug from Pioneer. I am running the most current firmware (v1.08 as of 5/10/15...firmware released Oct 2014). I think Pioneer really dropped the ball on QA with this unit, especially for the price. Another item of note...the unit was not fully functional out of the box. It came preloaded with v.1.08 firmware (the latest), but I needed to load it again with the same version off the website for the unit to work. It would randomly bring up the bluetooth voice control. I'm guessing Pioneer will not be putting any more time into this unit given they released the 8100, which is unfortunate.

    Pros: Display quality.

Cons: Numerous software bugs, no ability to upgrade Nav maps (as of 5/10/15), lack of value for the price paid.

    Not perfect, but pretty good

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After watching the videos online about this unit I was really excited to get my hands on it. I ordered this with the iDatalink Maestro RR and the accompanying VW adapter. The installation went fairly well but I never got the functionality of the iDatalink to work fully. The Pioneer unit didn't sync up and gave me an "Unsupported Version" error on the connection with iDatalink. The navigation was really spotty as I am driving around, the display would skip all over the place and put me off on side streets. From what I have seen, this unit is more suited to someone with an iPhone and without the iDatalink system.

Pros: Great display, multiple options for input, easy to use, great sound

Cons: Navigation isn't that good, didn't interface with iDatalink, poor Android support

Lots of features but many are extremely buggy...

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I got an open box special here. I was disappointed because it was missing a few items and some of the wires were cut off. They sent me some new wires but it cost me with installation delays. The unit has lots of features and some of them are great but some of them are very buggy. Carplay doesn't work well enough to use every day. Blame it on Apple or Pioneer, doesn't matter. It was okay but nothing I couldn't do with my phone mounted on the dash. I primarily listen to Beats Music and Apple says it's Carplay ready but it doesn't show up on the screen. About a week of using Carplay and now the interface is broken (screen cut off like it's frozen). Resetting the head unit did not solve it. So I went back to using the bluetooth audio instead. The unit has audio level issues. The music sounds great but when you get a navigation alert or when Siri talks, it's usually completely distorted and loud, like it's at maximum volume. And yes, I adjusted the alert volume level all the way down to 1, same problem. It's not specific to bluetooth or Carplay because it also happens with the built-in nav. Tilting display did not work correctly - it needs a few mm space to move up at top but install didn't allow for space so it won't open or close. After about 2 weeks of using, the audio turned off completely. Speakers tested good, wiring was good. Resetting didn't solve it. Guess it was a bad unit but given the cost I was surprised Crutchfield resold something so obviously used and abused.

Pros: Has some nice customization features. Display looks good. Dims down low or turns off for night. Lots of connectivity options. Touch screen responsive. Music sounds good. Fairly painless to install. Decent interface. Able to upgrade firmware.

Cons: Quality control issues. Audio amp bad. Display tilt mechanism needs more space than some installs allow. Carpal interface broken. App radio mode a joke. Glossy screen too reflective. Alert and voice volume sometimes way too loud despite lowering alert volume. No paper manual. Most rear connections need some reinforcement to stay put. Should have come with more cords and wires.

Apple Car Play - a farce

bizibill from New York on 3/22/2015

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have found more discussions on the failure of Apple Car Play then successful ones. I have spent endless hours reading all the bragging by Pioneer and Apple about this dog but the unit will be old before I ever see it work. I drove from NY to FL and back and for the most part had to use my iPhone to navigate. It lacks HFE (human factors engineering) being basically counter-intuitive on every step of the way.

Pros: You can tilt the screen to see it better.

Cons: You have to stop the car to make any changes, even to pair bluetooth - insane feature. And don't drive at night! There is no way to dim the thing - unheard of for any product in any cockpit, let alone in a car so it kills your night vision and is likely to cause an accident. Buy a cheap GPS and stick it to your windshield - and enjoy your stock radio. BTW - I believe everything that is wrong with it can be fixed in firmware but they need to hire someone over 12 to write it.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I shopped around for months trying to find the right radio to fit all my needs. This radio surpasses all expectations in what a car stereo should be. There are too many positives to list about this radio. If your an apple user this is the radio for you! I also purchased the sirius/xm tuner which is amazing on this unit! I basically decided on this unit over the others because of the dual camera inputs, and high end navigation system! Did I mention the sound quality and setup options are unlimited!!! The hands free calling is better than the factory installed unit in my wifes brand new high end car. The GPS is fast for recalculating a route in NAV mode. With the multiple inputs everyone in my Tacoma can plug in and listen to what they want. I absolutely love that people in the back seat can listen to something different than in the front. I didn't think i would use that feature but dual zone is awesome. The only issues I've had to far (in the month I've had it) the touch screen did freeze once... Not sure what to think but it eventually came back to life after key off and key on. hopefully, this was a fluke. A little pricey but worth it for tech savvy people! Great buy!!

Pros: Dual Camera inputs, Navigation, sound setting options, illumination customization, endless features!!!!

Cons: Pricey but worth it! Cooling fan a little loud & noticeable at low volumes, screen locked up once

    Great radio

Love it so far and have nothing major to complain about. Instillation was a little tricky with the wiring and requirement of the AUX plug and the stock AUX working together. The guys worked it out with me and it's all good now. System was just short of a true plug n play system and I say that only because of the AUX 1 not connecting to the stock AUX and not being able to use the Stock GPS antenna.

Pros: great display and easily connectivity via AUX, USB and BT.

Cons: Stock GPS not used updates not compatible with MAC

Do not buy any Pioneer avic if you have an iphone with ios 8. Carplay is not compatible. Pioneer recognizes this and does not plan on fixing the problem, per their website.

    Pros: nice sound

    Cons: no carplay

Crutchfield response on February 23, 2015 Pioneer has acknowledged that there is indeed a compatibility issue between AppRadio mode and iOS 8. The two systems just don't play well together in certain situations. They've identified the problem and a work-around, but it's still less than perfect. They're sure to get it fixed at some point.

Wow. I was excited to get this unit. I just got a new car, and I wanted a good navi to run in it. I use an iPhone, so I thought the CarPlay interface would be great, and worth the extra bucks. The current iteration of CarPlay is really not worth that much. I actually prefer the Pioneer iPod player, and the Pioneer Navi. About all Carplay is good for is texting. Carplay is just this interface that runs ON TOP OF the native operating system, so it just gets REAL confusion figgering where something is playing from; best to just use the Pioneer interface. The Navi is great, I liked it, pretty intuitive. The unit takers a LONG time to boot up... and it is a little on the sluggish side when switching from one area to another. The sound was GREAT! What I did not like and was VERY disappointing in was the Maestro RR interface. This was supposed to give me all the original functionality of my in car unit, plus all kinds of looks into the gauges and stuff like temp and oil pressure. I also thought it was supposed to simplify the hook up of the car stereo.Don't believe ANY of that! First off, the instructions DID NOT match the unit I have. Connectors were different (changed) on the unit shipped from what the instructions show. No explanation on how to hook up the new wires. Second, I still had to solder a LOT of wires. It may have simplified SOMEWHAT the soldering, but there is still a LOT more to do. I thought this was going to be plug and play. It is NOT.

Pros: I liked the navi (but it is too loud compared to other sources) Sound was Awesome Pretty

Cons: Carplay is not really all that great. HD Radio swicthes a LOT bewteen normal and HD... and I live in a big city. Yeck! Maestro RR interface SUCKS!

I bought this in July, only seven months ago. The first one was installed and replaced because the navigation did not work. Now my second one lost a speaker channel. I sure hope the third times a charm with this unit, as pioneer only warantees their product for one year and I'm past Crutchfield's 60 day warranty. (I'm running out if time for a dependable unit) I hope the third times the charm. If I could do it again, I would look at other brands. I will say it's easy to use, and the interface is awesome. Not so awesome when your uninstalling it to send it back to the manufacture though. I wouldn't do it again. Shop elsewhere.

    Pros: Usability, looks, features.

Cons: Money Pit. Reliability. Lack of Pioneer customer service.

I've had the radio for over 2 weeks and I'm loving it. I didn't pull the trigger on it until Apple Carplay was on it. I love the screen and it being capacitive. It's sharp for it being 480 and bright. I really don't have any negative to talk about. Maybe just that when it first starts up its a bit sluggish and when the navigation first starts up it takes a bit to load. But after that first minute it's good to go. Love most of the features. I'm not using appradio mode. I am using Apple Carplay and works like a charm. My main streaming service is iTunes Radio so of course I'm loving Carplay and everything that comes with it. SiriusXM is good too displaying album art and being able to rewind. Navigation is good and accurate. I also got a good deal here with the scratch & dent sale I got it on it saved me $200 and the only thing wrong I found was the box taped up. Can't go wrong with that got it for the price of the 7000 series.

    Pros: Screen. Apple Carplay. Navigation

Cons: Price. Slow the first minute of start up.

Boots up quickly and is user friendly. I never liked any of the navigation products that I've used outside of Garmin but have had no issues with the Pioneer nav. Android integration is limited, so make sure you check that out to see if it will work with your choice of smartphone. I use a Droid Maxx due to no other product's battery life coming even close. Unfortunately it is not comparable with the 8000 outside of Bluetooth connectivity.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Decent head unit but pioneer dropped the ball with this one. There were too many flaws with the cd changer. Using hands free was a joke. The thing I disliked the most was the change in volume when I'd get done with a call. The touchscreen was responsive and I have very few complaints with the functionality. However, the apps pioneer has were terrible and crashed all the time. I didn't like having to leave my phone unlocked to use the features. All in all it's a decent head unit but not for the price. Also, to all manufacturers please stop advertising apple car play until it is released. It's a big let down to constantly here people brag up car play when it's a long ways away from being here.

Pros: Interface is easy to understand and the screen is responsive.

Cons: No car play. Crappy phone apps and issues with sound.

Ive been using this product for about 8 months and I'm definitely disappointed with this head unit. for the price it should operate flawlessly and its far from that. Volume levels change when they want to up or down. Sometimes it will let me use Pandora sometimes it wont. And either way to use pandora you have to have a phone or other device connected by wire and bluetooth for it to work. I get feedback from the speakers that was not there before. Had to spend more money just to get the separate cables so that I could connect my galaxy s4. Then had to buy some other cable from Samsung because thats not included in the wiring set. There is no way to turn the unit off. To mute you have to use the volume button first then touch mute. Volume only works if sound is coming out. No remote at all. App radio is a joke. Expected alot better of a product for over 1000 dollars.

    Pros: Havent found one yet

    Cons: Overpriced underdelivered garbage

I own a 2004 Nissan 350Z that came with Bose system but without navigation. I wanted the best and after reading other reviews I decided to take the plunge. There are so many things you can do with this unit. I initially thought I might install this myself but came to see that it was above my pay grade. Common sense trumped my ego and I brought it to a professional for installation. It came out great. First the navigation. Easy to use and the touch screen is flawless. I've given it all sorts of descriptions to locate and destinations to get to. It took care of everything perfectly. Music? No problem. In addition to HD radio I also had the Sirius/XM option installed. Of course you have your CD player and Bluetooth. Also you can have music with the USB or SD HC. You can use your IPhone or or Android ( I have the Droid Razr ) for the built in App Radio. What you see and use on your phone you can see and use on your Avic-8000NEX. Of course, you can watch movies. Only when you are parked... ;-) Downside... That $ price tag.

Pros: The enormous amount of ways to use the Avic!

I've had this new HU installed for almost a month and am blown away by all the features. I previously had the stock "Alpine sound system" installed. Not sure if the stock HU was made by Alpine. It had NAV, MyGIG, UConnect bluetooth, etc. but was never satisfied with the quality of sound output so I decided to switch to something aftermarket that was comparable in features and function. I have been building out the system with components, sub and amps and this HU provides all the flexibility to get things tuned in quickly. The options for external storage is great. There are SD card limitations you need to be aware of. 32GB is the limit due to 64GB and above being exfat format. No biggie .. plan to use one of the USB for other storage. Iphone 5 compatibility with the HDMI and AV adapter is what I expected. Now just waiting for CarPlay. I have not used the NAV on a trip yet but have browsed it and the interface looks better than previous stock version. The screen is bright and is comparable to most smartphone graphics quality.

Pros: Features and Functions Flexibility to build out custom sound system

Cons: Price ... it is expensive for a HU but you get what you pay for.

I've been a Kenwood Fan ever since I bought my first car. However, when Kenwood announced that they were on the fence regarding Apple's CarPlay interface I decided that it was time to make a change. Pioneer has definitely gotten my business. This unit is very nice. Purchased the unit with the SiriusXM tuner and love it. The system is fast. I believe that boot up is under 10 seconds. Starting the GPS takes a little longer, but I believe that is due to system trying to lock onto Satellites first. Virtually no lag going between screens, menu's or songs. The sound is crisp and clear. Sounds much cleaner then the Kenwood DNX 6160 I use to own. The bluetooth system is probably the best I have seen in any radio. Usually everyone complains that I sound like I am in a wind tunnel or I sound robotic, etc. With this unit, Everyone says that I sound crystal clear. I've read some people complain about the maps, but I have yet to see an issue. It is different compared to Garmin, but honestly, I like it. I get detour suggestions, traffic/constructions alerts...Of course once Pioneer gets the AVIC SYNC services online, the GPS should improve even more. Looking forward to CarPlay to be enabled soon, so I can comment too much on that, however that is more of Apple's implementation then Pioneer. All in all a great unit, bought one for my Pontiac Solstice and loved it so much that I bought a second one for my Toyota Tacoma.

Pros: Beautiful multi-touch Capacitive Screen. Simplistic layout and easy to use. Can shut the screen off at night time. Plenty of inputs being either USB, HDMI, RCA, etc. Excellent quality bluetooth. CarPlay (soon)!

Cons: Expensive. You really have to want all the features that this radio offers to spend this amount of money. There are a lot of wires if you connect hdmi, USB 1 & 2, backup camera, s/w control, SiriusXM, microphone, etc. If you have a small dash and install it yourself, be prepared to spend ample time properly routing cables and making it look neat so that the unit doesn't overheat. (not really a con, but just a warning. It was a pain to get all the wires behind the dash of my solstice!)

Touchscreen is very responsive, initial setup is a breeze, bluetooth connectivity & audio streaming is top notch. Have not used all the functionality of this unit yet (just nav, bluetooth, Iphone integration for now). Sound is amazing with my OEM Rockford Fosgate, made my subwoofer come alive.

Pros: Capacitive touchscreen display, intuitive GUI, great navigation with lane assist. Love the speed warning (annoying to my passengers but keeps me away from speeding tickets).

I had the alpine 928 in my tundra, but had problems with the faceplate binding when opening. I was going to wait for the new kenwood 991hd, but it was delayed forever. My wife has the kenwood 691hd, and it's nice. Since I came to the end of my 60 day return period, I had to pull the trigger on the pioneer, because the 991 still wasn't released. I'm glad I did, and it was a great decision. The alpine was nice, but the UI seems about 10 years old compared to the pioneer. The screen is beautiful, and this thing is fast! You can even put your own customized pics on for background and splash screens. I like the wife's garmin nav on the kenwood, but I'm equally happy with the pioneer. I especially like how it shows what addresses I'm passing on the right and left as I drive down the street. It takes some of the guess work out. Can't wait to get the new apple car play when it's released in a few weeks. Sound is almost infinitely adjustable, and it sounds great. Dare I say better than the alpine? In my truck it is. Buy it, you'll be glad you did.

Pros: Fast, crisp and responsive. Awesome screen

This was a replacement for my AVIC Z1. I like all of the improvements they have made and that it is all in one unit unlike the Z1 which needed separate bluetooth, nav and sat radio.

Pros: lots of features clear screen faster than the older system i had easy to navigate through the menus.

Cons: - There are a lot of wires in the back. I had my phone connected into USB 1 and for the controls i needed to switch it out to USB 2 so the unit had to come back out. A pain but it got done. - For the Samsung S4 to work you need Samsungs MDL cable. It has a short cord to plug your phone into. It would be nice if this was all built into the system so there was just one cable to connect instead of 2 going into the adapter then to your phone.

I have been researching replacing my factory radio with a NAV unit for some time. Many of the reviews of other manufacturer's systems complained of the systems being very slow and in general, not working well. This is not the case here. This receiver has great sound and phenomenal navigation. The intuitive user interface makes it easy to learn even though it has many sophisticated features. I coupled it with iDatalink Maestro and retained all of my steering wheel controls and UConnect features. The accessory package that comes from Crutchfield makes it easy to install and the end result is a "factory" look which was important to me. I highly recommend this unit!

Motorized 6.95" Capacitive LCD Touchscreen: The Pioneer AVIC-8000NEX features a 6.95" (16:9) capacitive LCD touchscreen monitor with a resolution of 800 x 480 (RGB); for a total of 1,152,000 pixels. The capacitive LCD touchscreen is highly responsive, powerful, and very intuitive for exceptional control. The capacitive touchscreen offers multi-touch gestures like pinch-to-zoom, plus simple swipe & scroll controls; similar to your smartphone's touchscreen interface. From the touchscreen you'll not only be able to control the head unit, but also a paired Bluetooth device, or a connected component such as your iPod/iPhone or Android smartphone. Menus will appear on screen for making function choices, audio adjustments, and setting up the system. The unit's touchscreen display is motorized; it electronically slides down to load and eject your DVD/CD discs. The angle of the motorized touchscreen display can also be adjusted to five different positions to meet your viewing needs in the car.

    • Favorites: You can register the desired menu items on the AVIC-8000NEX's "Favorites" menu screen. Registering your favorite menu items allows you to quickly jump to the registered menu item by a simple touch on the favorites menu. Up to 12 menu items can be registered as a "Favorite".
    • OSD + Backgrounds: The color of the on-screen display can be set to red, amber, green, blue or white. The background display can be selected from 8 different preset displays for the AV Operation screen and 5 different preset displays for the Top Menu screen. In addition, you can change the background display to other images imported from an external USB or SD/SDHC device.
    • Widescreen Modes: You can choose from the following widescreen modes when playing back video - Full (4:3 picture is enlarged in the horizontal direction only; enabling you to enjoy a 4:3 picture without any omissions), Zoom (4:3 picture is enlarged in the same proportion both vertically and horizontally; ideal for a 16:9 screen), Normal (4:3 picture is displayed as it is).
    • Picture Adjustments: You can store numerous video settings for the head unit's video source and rear-view camera; including brightness (adjusts the black intensity), contrast (adjusts contrast) color (adjusts color saturation), temperature (adjust the color temperature), and Dimmer (adjusts brightness).
    • Dimmer: To prevent the display from being too bright at night, the display is automatically dimmed when the car's headlights are turned on. The automatic dimmer function only works when the orange/white illumination wire in the wiring harness is connected to the vehicle's headlight circuit.
Note: The unit offers English, Chinese, French, Portuguese, and Spanish text.

Start-Up Time: The Pioneer AVIC-8000NEX will turn on to the last source selected or the navigation screen. The unit has a start-up time of approximately 12.7 seconds from OFF to the last Source selected, or a start-up of approximately 35.3 seconds from OFF to the Navigation screen.

Front-Panel Control w/ Custom Illumination: In addition to the touchscreen controls, the unit includes frequently used buttons along the bottom edge of the screen. The color of the button illumination can be set to red, amber, green, blue, white, or scan (constantly cycling through the color spectrum). You can also create a custom color to match your vehicle's interior lighting (112 colors to choose from).

Pass-Code Security: You can create a 5 to 16 character password that must be entered if the head unit is disconnected from power.

MIXTRAX Illumination: MIXTRAX features a club-style illumination that enhances the mood with a dynamic dance club-like lighting effect. As MIXTRAX begins, lights start pulsing to the beat of the music, adding an extra level of entertainment. You can choose among twelve patterns of lighting variations from sound pressure level or low-pass synchronization modes. The lighting effects work like a spectrum analyzer, reaching peak colors based on the intensity of the music.

Parking Brake Interlock: This unit has a parking brake interlock system that prohibits viewing of video programming and operating certain controls when the vehicle is in motion. In order to watch video on the in-dash monitor, the vehicle must be stopped with the parking brake engaged. The head unit's light green wire must be connected to your vehicle's parking brake detection circuit. The head unit's touchscreen will display "Attention! Viewing of front seat video source while driving is strictly prohibited", if you try to watch a video when your vehicle is in motion.

2-DIN Chassis: The Pioneer AVIC-8000NEX has a 2-DIN chassis (also known as "Double-DIN"), and will fit in many vehicles with a large dash opening. The unit can be ISO-mounted using factory brackets. There is also an optional double-DIN sleeve (130ADTV133, sold separately) available for this unit that will allow you to Euro-mount or custom mount the Pioneer head unit in your vehicle. As always, please consult Crutchfield's Outfit My Car to verify fit with your vehicle.

    Onboard Navigation

HERE Navigation: The AVIC-8000NEX offers a comprehensive map database from HERE covering the entire United States (including Alaska & Hawaii), Canada, and Puerto Rico enabling users to route to millions of destinations; including 7.9 Million points of interest (POIs). The map database is stored on the head unit's built in 8GB flash memory. Map updates via a SD/SDHC memory card will be available at later date.

Note: Car navigation maps are frequently updated. While this database was judged to be as accurate as possible at the time of its release, a map database can never be 100% accurate. Road information that is maintained in the map databases, such as turn restrictions or road names may change over time.

GPS Technology: The AVIC-8000NEX accurately measures your current location by the Global Positioning System, a network of satellites orbiting the earth to give you time and position information. The accuracy of the GPS information depends upon how good the reception is. The unit has a built-in GPS receiver with a magnetic antenna included. The AVIC-8000NEX also features a speed sensing cable for better accuracy of your vehicle's movement; this wire should always be connected to your vehicle's speed detection circuit.

Note: The navigation receiver took approximately 10.1 seconds to calculate directions from Virginia to California. It only took 7.7 seconds to calculate directions from Virginia to Maryland. These tests were done inside the Crutchfield Lab of the Crutchfield Headquarters. Results will vary based on length of calculated route and your surrounding area.

Real-Time Traffic Updates: Partnering with Clear Channel Broadcasting's Total Traffic Network, the built-in traffic tuner provides real-time traffic data for over 90 major cities in North America, including US and Canada. Check your commute route in advance or re-route to your destination to avoid traffic congestion. There is no subscription cost and no annoying on-screen advertisements.

    • Road segments affected by traffic incidents are displayed with an alternate color on the map and small symbols above the road show the nature of the incident.
    • When traffic information that may affect your route is receive, this system will warn you that it is recalculating the route and navigation will continue with a new route that is optimal considering the most up-to-date traffic conditions.

AVICSYNC App (Future Availability): With Pioneer's free AVICSYNC app and a connected iPhone (4 and newer) or Android smartphone (Galaxy series), users can access connected services that include traffic, local search, weather, gas prices and more, with key information/icons overlaid on the existing map screen information (subscription(s) required). With the AVICSYNC app, users have up-to-date and current information offering the benefits of the Latest Map Guarantee (LMG), where map data that becomes available within 90 days of the first use is updated on the receiver. It also includes highly accurate and the fast live traffic updates (every two minutes) from its High Density (HD) Traffic feature.

On-Screen Map: The Pioneer AVIC-8000NEX displays a real-time moving map illustrating your current position and intended route. It will show map scale and geographic details such as lakes, rivers, highways, buildings, and towns. Your route is marked with a green line, while your vehicle is indicated by a red arrow on the screen, and checkered flag marks your destination. As you travel the AVIC-8000NEX guides to your destination with arrows on the map and directions at the top of the screen. The map screen will also indicate the distance to your next maneuver. During your calculated route, distance to your final destination, timed need to reach the final destination, and estimated arrival time are all displayed on-screen. You can adjust the following map settings.

    • 2D/3D Map Mode: The Pioneer AVIC-8000NEX allows you to view its on-screen map in a 2D (two-dimensional) or 3D (three-dimensional) view. 2D View displays a normal two-dimensional map with North or your direction at the top of map screen. Similar to paper road maps, the 2D mode, shows you streets, roads, and elevation by color. In 3D mode, your direction is at the top of the map screen and you can see the altitude and elevations differences. You can distinguish between valleys, mountains, and elevated roads. In selected cities 3D landmarks and 3D buildings are also displayed.
    • Color Mode: You can switch between daytime and nighttime color modes or let the head unit's software switch between the two mode automatically a few minutes before sunrise and a few minutes after sunset.
Note: The on-screen map offers Smart Zoom. When you approach a turn, the map will zoom in and raise the view angle to let you easily recognize your maneuver at the next junction. If the turn is at a distance, it will zoom out and lower the view angle to be flat so you can see the road in front of you.

Lane Guidance & Signposts: The Pioneer AVIC-8000NEX's navigation map offers helpful lane information and signpost guidance, along with exit service.

    • Lane Guidance: When navigation on multilane roads, it is important to take the appropriate lane in order to follow the recommended route. If lane information is available in the map data, the map screen will display the lanes and their directions using small arrows at the bottom of the map. High lighted arrows represent the lanes you need to take.
    • Signposts: Where additional information is available, signposts substitute arrows. Signposts are displayed at the top of the map. The color and style of the signposts are similar to the real ones you can see above the road or by the roadside, They show the available destinations and the number of the road the lane leads to.
    • Junction View: If you are approaching a freeway exit or a complex intersection and the needed information exists, the map is replaced with a 3D view of the junction. The lanes you need to take are displayed with arrows. Signposts can also be present, if information is available.
    • Exit Services: While navigation a route, you can find gas, food, lodging, and restrooms near upcoming exits along major highways and freeways.
    • Tunnel View: When entering a tunnel, the map is replaced with a generic tunnel image so that surface roads and buildings cannot distract you.

Audible Alerts: The Pioneer AVIC-8000NEX offers various audible alerts and functions to help you get to your destination safely.

    • Voice Guidance (Text-to-Speech w/ Landmarks): In addition to graphical on-screen directions and maps, the AVIC-8000NEX provides voice guidance and turn-by-turn directions with Landmark indentification. You can choose a male or female voice in English, French, or Spanish. Some of the voices are capable of text-to-speech, announcing the street names along with the turn directions. You can adjust the the voice guidance volume independently from the head unit's main volume.
    • Safety Alert: This function can warn you when you approach road safety cameras, school zones, or railroad crossings (if available). You can also add your own alert points. Beeps or the spoken type of alert will be heard when you are approaching of these points.
    • Speed Limit Warning: Some maps may contain information about the speed limits of certain road segments. The AVIC-8000NEX provides an audible warning if you exceed the recommended speed limit.

Note: The unit will mute the audio of the other sources during navigation voice-prompts.

Where Am I?: This screen contains information about the current position (or approximately the last known position if GPS reception is not available) and a button to search for POIs and emergency assistance nearby.

Destination Search: The Destination Menu offers search tools to find your destination and play your route.

Note: Your vehicle must be stopped and the parking brake will need to be engaged to enable certain navigation functions; such as Address search and Coordinates.

Route Calculation: The Pioneer AVIC-8000NEX calculates your route based on your Vehicle Type, Route Method, and Avoidances.

    • Vehicle Type: You select what type of vehicle you are driving, so the navigation unit can determine the best route based on your vehicle type (Car, Truck, Emergency, Bus, or Taxi).
    • Route Method: You can choose which route method (Fastest, Shortest, Green, Economical, or Easy) the navigation unit should use when calculating your route.
      • Fastest: give a quick route, if you can travel at or near the speed limit on all roads. Usually the best section for fast and normal cars
      • Shortest: gives a route that has the smallest total distance of all possible routes. It can be practical for slow vehicles
      • Economical: combines the benefits of Fast and Short; calculates as if it were calculating the Fast route, but it takes other roads as well to save fuel
      • Easy: results in a route with fewer turns and no difficult maneuvers
    • Avoidances: You can tell the navigation unit to avoid certain types of roads along your calculated route, such as - Highways, Tolls, Carpool/HOV, Unpaved Roads, and/or Ferries.

Detours & Alternatives: You can select "Route Alternative" to see the turn-list and map screen of four routes (Fastest/Shortest/Economical/Easy) with the selected route planning parameters, giving you the option to select which route to take. You can also choose to Detour around the road ahead, avoid a specific road, or around a section of the route.

Router Planner: The Route Planner feature lets you built your route usign the list of destinations you have chosen. You can modify the list as you like (adding or removing a destination (waypoint), changing a final destination, or setting a new starting position.

Itinerary w/ Route Simulation: The Itinerary page displays turn-by-turn instructions for your entire route and the distance between turns. You can preview all the route information and simulate travel along a projected route.

Auto Reroute: If you depart from the original route, the navigation system recalculates the route and provides new directions.

Trip Monitor: The Trip Monitor contains useful information about your trip. This information can be saved manually when you reach your destination or automatically along your route. Trip log data includes; Start/End Time, Avg./Max. Speed, Total/Driving/Stopped Time, Total Distance, and Min./Max. Altitude.

Off-Road Navigation: The difference between the on-road and off-road modes is the navigation itself. When you are on the Map screen with an off-road route, your position and heading is not aligned with the nearest road and there is no turn by turn navigation; just a recommended direction. You see a straight line drawn between your current position and the next destination to reach. The Turn Preview field in the top left corner shows an arrow with your bearing and the distance of the next destination.

HD Radio: The Pioneer AVIC-8000NEX's built-in HD Radio tuner lets you listen to the radio with the same fidelity as your digital music. HD Radio features high quality audio, FM multi-casting, and data services. With HD Radio, your FM stations offer near CD-quality sound, AM stations provide FM-like sound, and there is crystal-clear reception with no audio distortion. Best of all, HD Radio is 100% subscription free. The unit's tuner also supports analog AM/FM broadcasts.

    • Multicasting: In addition to conventional broadcasts, with HD Radio broadcasting it is possible to choose from up to 3 multicast programs (HD1 to HD3, and analog). There are also data programs for each program.
    • Station Text/Album Art + RDS: AM/FM digital stations can offer text and data such as artist names and song titles. The head unit also supports Album Art from select HD Radio stations. For analog FM stations, the Radio Data System (RDS) feature displays radio broadcast information such as song/artist information when listening to compatible RDS FM stations.
    • Supertuner IIID: The Supertuner IIID features Feed Forward Control, which avoids multi-path interference. Digital processing reduces distortion, and improves Signal-to-Noise Ratio and stereo separation. Advanced analog technology improves signal processing sensitivity.
    • Reception Blending: If a digital broadcast reception condition gets poor, this unit automatically switches to the analog broadcast of the same frequency level. If this function is set to "On", the tuner switches between digital broadcast and analog broadcast automatically. If this function is 'Off', reception will be conducted within an analog broadcast.
    • BSM (Best Stations Memory): The BSM (Best Stations Memory) function lets you automatically store the six strongest analog or HD stations under preset buttons 1-6 of the currently tuned band. The tuner has 3 FM banks and 1 AM bank. You can store 6 presets for each bank giving you a total of 18 FM presets and 6 AM presets.
    • Local Tuning: Local seek tuning lets you tune in only those radio stations with sufficiently strong signals for good reception. There are 4 level of sensitivity for FM and two levels for AM. The higher settings allow reception of only the strongest stations, while lower settings let you receive progressively weaker stations.
    • iTunes Tagging: It is possible to save the song's information (tag) from a HD Radio or RDS FM broadcasting station to your USB-direct connected iPod/iPhone. The songs will show up in a playlist called "Tagged" in iTunes the next time you sync your iPod/iPhone. Then you can directly buy the songs you want from the iTunes Music Store.

Note: HD Radio is the system for digital AM and FM broadcasting in the U.S. More than 2,000 radio stations are broadcasting their primary signals in digital HD Radio technology, as a free service. Go to to check for HD Radio stations in your area.

You can simultaneously enjoy the same or different sources in the front and rear of your vehicle. The unit's A/V output can be set to Mirror, Disc, AV-IN, SD, USB, iPod, or Off. The Mirror mode simply outputs the same audio/video signal which is playing on the head unit's touchscreen monitor to your connected rear monitor/headphone system.

HDMI Input: In addition to AppRadio mode for iPhone and Android, the head unit's HDMI input can be used to connect almost any external mobile AV source with an HDMI output; such as a TV tuner, Blu-ray player, or game system. The HDMI input will provide video and audio playback. Your vehicle's parking brake will need to be engaged to view video on the receiver's screen. Playback functions will need to be controlled from your HDMI-connected device (not the Pioneer head unit).

Rear-View Camera Input: The AVIC-8000NEX is equipped with a composite video rear-view camera input for the addition of an optional backup camera (130NDBC6, sold separately). When the vehicle's transmission is put in reverse, the screen automatically switches to the rear view camera (violet/white wire of the harness must be connected to the vehicle's reverse lamp circuit for automatic video switching). Automatic video switching takes approximately 0.75 seconds. The unit also provides four on-screen guidelines to assist you when backing up your vehicle. You can even select for the rear-view camera to stay on at all times, so you can keep an eye on the trailer you are towing. Audio from your music source will continue playing, while the back-up camera is displayed.

Note: The head unit's composite video AV input can also be used as a second camera input for a front-camera (sold separately). Automatic video switching and on-screen guidelines are not supported by the second camera input.

    OEM/Remote Control

OEM Integration: Via a firmware update, this Pioneer navigation receiver is compatible with the iDatalink Maestro RR (794ADSMRR, sold separately); a web programmable module that will permit the aftermarket Pioneer head unit to work with select Ford, Lincoln, and Mercury vehicles that feature the factory SYNC system; select GM vehicles with factory OnStar; select Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep vehicles with U-Connect; and select Volkswagens. The iDatalink Maestro RR lets Ford/Lincoln/Mercury, GM, Dodge/Chrysler, and VW owners to swap out their factory radio for this aftermarket Pioneer head unit; while retaining the Ford Sync system, GM OnStar system, Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep U-Connect system, steering wheel controls, USB interface, Bluetooth (Ford only), Satellite Radio, 911 assist, and more. You will need to flash the iDatalink Maestor RR readio replacement interface module with the correct firmware from iDatalink's website. In addition to flashing the iDatalink Maestro RR module, you will also need a vehicle specific harness (sold separately). The Pioneer head unit's OEM Setup menu must also be configured with your compatible vehicle's factory system before initial operation.

Note: Please consult Crutchfield's Outfit My Car to see if your vehicle is compatible and what additional installation gear you will need to complete the install.

Steering Wheel Remote Compatibility: The head unit features an OEM steering wheel remote control input (3.5mm) on the rear of the unit that lets you keep your vehicle's factory radio steering wheel remote controls when used with an optional steering wheel audio control adapter (sold separately). Please consult Crutchfield's Outfit My Car to see if your vehicle is compatible.

    Yes you do. [ Hiram  Jun 26, 2015 ]
No! But it's a must if you want to watch videos and stuff like that. CarPlay is done through the regular Apple USB lightening cable. Your just need a USB extension cord which I think the radio already provides [ Jorge  Jun 26, 2015 ]
yes, just update to last firmware and plug the iPhone into the usb port on the Avic 8000nex unit and that it. Firmware is at pioneer website. [ MARK  Jun 26, 2015 ]
I Never was able to get appradio to work with my note 4, even before it updated to lollipop. I actually don't have that head unit now...sorry that I couldn't help. [ Gregg  May 29, 2015 ]
Yes. The RCA's will still work when speakers are attached to the HU via the speaker leads. [ Jeff  Feb 24, 2015 ]  Staff
Yes It will use a video cam input with an rca plug. Most all will have this as a standard video connection. [ Carl  Feb 17, 2015 ]
It has a input for rear camera and reverse wire [ everett  Feb 16, 2015 ]
Yes it will along with a second camera. I installed a license plate backup and a second one on my 5th wheel [ Larry  Feb 16, 2015 ]
Yes it will. There are two AV connections, so there is options. My installer had to splice into the connection to get my stock back up camera to work. He also installed a camera on the front end. [ Jeffrey  Feb 16, 2015 ]
Yes it will support a back-up camera. It is packed with lots of features. Apple air play is great to if you are a iPhone4s or above user. If not with blue tooth you play music from your as well make and take phone calls threw this unit. It's worth every penny. [ Nate  Feb 16, 2015 ]
Yes, it supports the standard composite/yellow rca input. I am currently using with the pioneer nd-bc6 no problems [ Daniel  Feb 16, 2015 ]
Yes, In the back of the 8000nex there are 4 rca inputs. There is a brown one for back up camera's. The manual refers the pioneers own ND-BC6, but any back up camera with the yellow rca plug will work. [ Jonathan  Feb 16, 2015 ]
    Yes! [ VLADIMIR  Feb 16, 2015 ]
Yes it will. It even has built-in on-screen guides (that you can turn off if you want). [ David  Feb 16, 2015 ]
Yes it does and works perfectly [ Eric  Feb 16, 2015 ]
Yes. I've got one hooked up to mine. [ Matthias  Feb 16, 2015 ]
Hiya John, Yes, sure does. Overall a great unit. I have it in my 350Z Roadster [ Robert  Feb 16, 2015 ]
Absolutely. I have a Kenwood backup camera currently hooked up to my unit and have had zero issues. [ ann  Feb 16, 2015 ]
    Great [ FREDRIC M  Feb 16, 2015 ]
    It's great [ FREDRIC M  Feb 16, 2015 ]
The navigation on this unit is absolutely superb! Even better than my $90,000 lexus. [ ARVIN  Feb 16, 2015 ]
I don't own an android phone, so waiting was not worth my time. I have an iphone and I rarely use apple carplay. The reason I bought the NEX8000 is so that I have the option to use it without needing a phone and without requiring me to use an expensive data plan. [ khang  Mar 04, 2015 ]
Well I use the Apple play with the 8000 but am told that it wil work well with androids with certain adapters. There are good U-tube videos about this radio. So far I love it, still in the learning mode:-) hope this helps. Check out U-tube. George [ JANET E  Feb 10, 2015 ]
don't know about the 4100, but I like the 8000. The manual has 229 pages. every time I figure out how to do something else I like it more. Thanks, Ed [ Edward  Feb 09, 2015 ]
I guess if you need android auto? Car play is only cool because of Spotify. Siri sucks as usual. [ Michael  Feb 09, 2015 ]
The 8000 is a much better spec'ed (capacitive touch, etc) unit. Do the side by side comparison and you will see. I just put one in my truck and its works awesome. I have ZERO complaints. I wouldn't give up the 8000 for the 4100. Totally different units. Now if you were comparing the 8000 vs new 8100 coming out you would have to determine if saving $400ish is worth not having Android auto. For me and the way I use the radio the 8000 is perfect and I will have no regrets NOT having Android Auto on my 8000. Who knows Pioneer might roll out a firmware update for the 8000 to incorporate Android Auto but I wouldn't count on it... [ John  Feb 09, 2015 ]
What phone do you have? If you have an iphone, dont wait. If you have an android, I'd wait. FWIW, Carplay (the Iphone app) is useful for texting.... and that's about it. It may get better in the future, but the native player in Pioneer is more useful and better. Same with the Navi. Also, be aware that the car kist that Crutchfield sends with these DPO NOT work with existing mics in the car. CrutchfieldSupport just told me that the Maestro unit WILL NOT use the in car mic system and I have to put in the pioneer one. Which totally sucks! I will probably return the Pioneer because of this... [ Dave  Feb 08, 2015 ]

No. Pioneer models without the GPS navigation (such as the AVH-X4700 BS) do have a remote. Sitting right next to the unit in the driver's seat, I have never seen the need for a remote. [ John M.  Feb 03, 2015 ]
No it does not come with any remote. The closest this unit will get to having a remote, is through steering wheel control. There is no IR functionality or aftermarket wireless remotes that will work. [ Cody  Feb 03, 2015 ]
Does not come with a remote, nor can you add one. You can integrate steering wheel controls, however. [ Ryan  Feb 03, 2015 ]
No. It does not come with a remote and I don't think one can be used. [ J AND  Feb 03, 2015 ]

    Don't know. Don't have that [ ARVIN  Jan 10, 2015 ]
Sorry Christian, Hawaii does not have sirrusxm. [ MARK  Jan 10, 2015 ]
This unit does not have a digital output. However, there is an analog video A/V output: AV Output (w/ Dual Zone): The unit features a composite video jack and 3.5mm audio jack to output A/V signals to an optional monitor and headphone system. [ Jeff  Dec 23, 2014 ]  Staff

Just as fast as any other 1 amp charge rate. But if you charge your phone at a 2 amp rate this will seem slow. [ Jebbadiah A.  Nov 30, 2014 ]
    Charges quickly [ ARVIN  Nov 29, 2014 ]
Mine charges quickly while docked [ DALE  Nov 29, 2014 ]
It does a decent job charging wise. Its not as fast as plugging it in an outlet directly, but you're using the phone too so you have to give in a little. [ dion  Nov 29, 2014 ]
slow, but I can't get it to full charge unless you drive a long distance. [ MARK  Nov 29, 2014 ]
Great charging the phone. You have two options to connect the iPhone w/cord or Bluetooth. [ Andre  Nov 29, 2014 ]
Best way to research this is to download the AVIC manual from Pioneer. It's 212 pages, however it will answer every question. You need to use a Lightning Digital AV Adapter are sold separately by Apple. A USB cord and a Lightning cord, both connected to the back of the AVIC 8000NEX plug into this adapter. It's a bulky set up. The adapter is about a third the size of an iPhone, and it has a short 3 inch lightning cord that plugs into the iPhone. The USB cord in the lightning cord plug into the adapter. There's no way to easily hide it while plugged into your iPhone. Once you get over that, the video works fantastically. The whole unit is just cool. I don't particularly care for the bulky 2 cord set up, so I just use Bluetooth on mine. I don't play the videos. [ William  Dec 01, 2014 ]
GPS works, like any other its built into the HU. Has memory but its used for software upgrades etc, not storing your information on it. You could connect an external HD to access music from it. The radio only has a few apps that are compatible with it, they are built into the App Radio APP try Googling APP RADIO UNCHAINED. Yes it has BT no Wifi though. Did you read the info crutchfield provides? [ Brian  Nov 27, 2014 ]
Anthony , I believe it does have built in memory. I would think if you opporate through your phone through the HU it probably does use data plan. The GPS is just like a portable GPS which trianglizes between three satalites to give live time positioning. You won't need to connect to any external HD unit , since the Head unit has built in HD , WHICH SOUNDS AWSOME....I'm still learning the HU myself , everyday I learn it does something new.It does have bluetooth that will let you connect to multible devices. Also , you buy a comparable patch cord kit that will let you connect your phone, IPod,IPad, ext.I am very satisfied with this unit, and it sounds great.I highly recommend this NEX.8000. [ ROBERT S  Nov 26, 2014 ]
As far as I can tell, there is little to no internal memory. When the battery is disconnected, most everything has to be reset. Interestingly, not everything though. The Bluetooth settings remain intact, as well as a few other things. But most everything is set to factory. The unit comes (with the firmware update) all of the GPS maps installed, and I've found the Pioneer maps to be more than adequate, and no iPhone data plan usage is required for the built-in GPS system. Now, if you decide to use the CarPlay iPhone maps, you'll be using your data plan. I haven't found it necessary to use anything but the Pioneer loaded maps, although the iPhone maps may be slightly better in finding things, such as restaurants, etc., and Siri is pretty nice to have for some of the more unusual requests beyond gas stations, etc. I can't see how one could connect a hard drive to it, although it is possible to easily connect a USB thumb drive or an SD card. As far as apps - this is the easiest part. If you load a CarPlay compatible app on your iPhone, it is automatically available through CarPlay. No loading, transfers, or anything else. Finally - There is no WiFi capability on this unit; any WiFi would be through a "hotspot" created on your iPhone or iPad, but not through the AVIC itself. The Bluetooth works flawlessly - I've connected two iPhones, no problem. When you connect an iPhone through the Lightning connector (which you'll have to do if you want to use CarPlay), you'll lose the Bluetooth capability. Not sure why they would do this - I would like to have one phone connected for CarPlay and still be able to have the other iPhone available to receive calls, etc., through Bluetooth. Can't do it, though. One of the good things about this unit is that it has the capability to update the firmware. So, I expect that there are some other good things coming as CarPlay evolves and Pioneer provides corresponding firmware updates. [ Darrell J.  Nov 26, 2014 ]
The unit comes with maps installed, Bluetooth ready, you have to purchase the connection for the apple product you plan to use. When you connect via Bluetooth you're using your phone as you would usually, no extra data charges for using it.Also if you have stirring wheel controls, you have to purchase the controller unit to connect to the back of the radio. [ Hiram  Nov 26, 2014 ]
It has internal memory, used for updates to the map, and OS updates. External memory is needed for music/video through the two usb ports, or internal sd slot (standard sd, but adapters will work if you have a mini or microsd). It will use your data plan if you stream music from your phone through Pandora, or other music streaming. If you stream music from your phone from its internal memory, no data is used against your data plan. GPS works pretty good, and yes has maps preinstalled. Not enough power from the usb ports to power an external hard drive, but will support usb flash drives. I think it has wifi, but haven't been able to test that, and it has Bluetooth for hands free phone as well as Bluetooth music. Not sure on the apps, as my Android phone at the present time doesn't support that feature, I think the iPhone does, but I don't have an iPhone. [ Gregg  Nov 26, 2014 ]
Yes, it has internal memory for the GPS database, which is updatable via the USB or SD card. It will not use your data plan. You only use your data plan if you connect your phone via bluetooth or HDMI/Lightening- and in that case you are using data for the apps displayed like Pandora or the AppLink. You can mirror your phone on the screen and use your phone's GPS, and of course in that case you are using your data plan. There is no wi-fi, just Bluetooth for wireless. Apps are dependent on what phone you have and most must be run when your phone is connected. The Crutchfield Advisors helped me alot with pre-sale- I recommend you call or chat with them too- they know these things inside and out. [ Timothy  Nov 26, 2014 ]
Yes. I currently use the system with my iphone 6 plus. [ LUIGI  Nov 24, 2014 ]
Yes it supports iPhone 6 and 6+. You will require firmware 1.06 or later on the AVIC-8000NEX and the most current version of the firmware is 1.08 and you can download it from the Pioneer web site if the unit you purchase has an older firmware. The new firmware supports Apple CarPlay. [ David  Nov 24, 2014 ]
    Yes [ DEREK  Nov 24, 2014 ]
It should be as Pioneer has just recently released the software update to link IPhones with the receiver. I believe it's called CarPlay or something like that. I'm not an Apple user, so I can't tell you with absolute certainty but I'm 99% sure you're good. [ ann  Nov 24, 2014 ]
Yes it is and even a jail broken iPhone 6 or 6 plus [ Eric  Nov 24, 2014 ]
confirmed, 32gb, even with latest firmware. It will see a 128gb usb flash drive however. [ Gregg  Nov 26, 2014 ]

    I don't know the answer to that, I used a 32GB. [ MARK  Oct 29, 2014 ]

Im not sure. maybe you load them from a scan disk. Which iPhone are you using? I only have the 4s and I think it limits the capabilities. [ Matt  Sep 24, 2014 ]
Yes. The backgrounds and splash screen need to be loaded by sd or usb. I use one of the animated backgrounds for audio video mode and I imported a Toyota logo for the splash screen which shows briefly until the unit boots up. [ Gregg  Sep 24, 2014 ]
I have an Android phone so no help with your Apple. I will say there seems to be several things the unit is supposed to do that I can't figure out as well. I think there's a lack of software support at this time but is rumored to be available soon. All your questions at this time will need to be addressed directly with Pioneer to actually get any kind of reliable information do to this unit being so new to the market. [ ann  Sep 24, 2014 ]
I have not found using that feature to be very user friendly. Crutchfield tech support is good when I get around to calling them but mostly I have been underutilizing my system because it is easier to just set my Galaxy Note 3 GPS up and let it talk to me through the radio. I have tried setting them both up and comparing, and not been at all happy where the Pioneer GPS sent me. I don't think the Pioneer supports the note 3 for all the app functions anyway. [ NONA  Sep 18, 2014 ]
When you say "you now have a second screen for the phone" what exactly do you mean? Can you access Google Maps, or your phone contacts and calendars FROM the headunit, or do you have to do everything on the phone screen and it just shows up on the Headunit as well? This is where I'm a little confused, If mirror link works and I can control phone commands from the headunit screen (like using Google Maps on my phone, but controlling it with the HeadUnit), doesn't this make APPradio and all that unnecessary? [ C  Sep 18, 2014 ]
I just bought a Samsung mhl adapter at best but for 60 dollars. I haven't played around with it much but for the most part what I've noticed is you now have a second screen for the phone. On certain apps it controls the phone. But for the most part its just a second screen. (With a 1/2 second delay) [ Bryan  Sep 18, 2014 ]
Cannot speak to the S3 but I have tried Samsung Nexus is is claimed to be fully Appradio mode supported along with the S5. Both with the normal Appradio and with ARUnchained and have had horrible success. If you can get the stuff to connect then its fine but once you turn key off and back on its hit or miss on bluetooth connecting HDMI recognition, etc. Also iPod IPhone support is not reliable either although much better than Android. Even SD card support for MP3's is bad sometimes Mixtrax works right sometimes it does not. Navigation software on the system is so so. Pioneer has been promising firmare updates for Apple Carplay support all summer but to date no such firmware. The 8000 needs some serious firmware updates to fix all the bugs. Navigation software is not all that great either. Basically for 1400 bucks this thing should be solid and its not. I regret buying it and the only way I would change my mind is for firmware updates that actually fix all the flakey external apple and android device problems. [ David  Sep 18, 2014 ]
I'm using a PNY branded 128gb usb flash drive, sees it fine. [ Gregg  Nov 26, 2014 ]
Maximum is 32GB. There is no playlist support for MP3's on SD card so keep that in mind. Mixtrax is also very buggy and I would not recommend even bothering with it. [ David  Sep 18, 2014 ]
    I believe max is 32. [ ARVIN  Sep 14, 2014 ]
Single but with the Bluetooth connection I will probably use it very little [ Larry  Jul 09, 2014 ]
Single disk cd / DVD player. It also has an SD card reader behind the screen that you can load up with tons of music and it's pretty cool. [ Terrance  Jul 09, 2014 ]
This unit has a single disk slot. But with Pandora, Sirius XM, and HD Radio. Who needs CD's? [ Theo  Jul 09, 2014 ]
Single...but if you have itunes/iTunes Match or an iPod or any sort of media device you can plug it in...CD's are going to be obsolete... [ CHARLES  Jul 08, 2014 ]
It has a single. But I have yet to use it. I mostly use the blue tooth on my phone. And sometimes the sd card. [ Bryan  Jul 08, 2014 ]
    A single CD Sounds great though! [ Samuel  Jul 08, 2014 ]
Single disc. You can download the user manual and it has this as well as other information [ DALE  Jul 08, 2014 ]
    Single CD/DVD [ dion  Jul 08, 2014 ]
It has a single cd/dvd player. I have not used it yet since I put my music library on an SD card to play on the head unit. [ Jeffrey  Jul 08, 2014 ]

Don't know yet, haven't had to upgrade the maps yet. [ ARVIN  Jun 30, 2014 ]
Right now there's no way to update the maps, or use much of the functionality of the receiver that was promised. This is because the "AVICSYNC" app is NOT YET AVAILABLE from Pioneer, which is a complete scam if you ask me. Especially when you pay over $1000 for a unit -- you'd expect it to be ready to go out of the box. That's been a HUGE disappointment. [ MATT  Jun 30, 2014 ]

It does arrange by artist, song, album, etc. Navigation is decent too, if you want to jump down several letters of the alphabet, swipe down on the right edge of the screen and it will display which letter it will jump to when you release your finger. [ Gregg  Nov 26, 2014 ]

It's actually a full 7 inches. I just got done installing it in a brand new Subaru STI, with a full Focal system in it. There was an older pioneer touch screen in it before, and this NEX actually made the speakers sound way better somehow. I loved this deck so much I went and bought one! [ Luke  May 24, 2014 ]
I've not installed the unit yet so i can't answer your question. [ Alex  May 14, 2014 ]
On the lower end model 5000 and 6000 NEX the anti theft is only the detachable faceplate. The model 7000 and 8000 NEX software program on the unit. [ MARK  May 14, 2014 ]
To my knowledge the faceplate does not come off. [ ARVIN  May 13, 2014 ]
    I couldn't tell you. I'm a Mac guy. [ TERRY L  May 16, 2014 ]
I don't see a listing for the Operating system used on this model. I would recommend reaching out to an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. They may be able to help answer your question. [ Jeff  May 15, 2014 ]  Staff
You will want to contact an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat to discuss compatibility with your factory system. They will be able to pull up your vehicle and see if this will integrate. If it does not, then they will also be able to discuss other options with you. [ Krissy  May 02, 2014 ]  Staff
The info I am seeing shows that this unit does in fact support FLAC on a USB drive. FLAC: 8-/16-bit rate; 16-44.1k sampling rates I would recommend reaching out to an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. They should be able to help confirm the compatibility.
