It's all about the sound quality

You'll find plenty of good CD receivers on the market that offer solid sound quality, active displays, and lots of features. But if your sights are set on achieving ultimate sound quality, you need to look beneath the surface for a receiver that's built for SQ from the ground up. Pioneer's DEH-80PRS CD receiver goes well beyond most receivers with the quality of its internal components and architecture.

High-quality components

Pioneer starts with audiophile-grade components — components like a set of three Burr-Brown® 24-bit D/A converters, one each for the lows, mids, and highs, along with beefy, high-capacitance power supply capacitors that keep your sound clean and focused even when you push your system. A 4-layer circuit board design reduces internal noise by shielding vulnerable components with copper foil.

Pioneer DEH-80PRS

The DEH-80PRS utilizes a 28-bit binary floating-point digital signal processor, which provides incredibly precise control of the receiver's signal processing and tuning. What's this mean to you? You can adjust the time alignment and other acoustic parameters without degrading the original signal — the sound stays accurate and real.

Unparalleled sound controls

The DEH-80PRS boasts plenty of built-in power, and you can adjust the output with a comprehensive 16-band EQ that lets you set the left and right channels independently. But you'll really want to hook this receiver up to external amplifiers for its true genius to shine through. The DEH-80PRS boasts a sophisticated 3-way active crossover network that allows you to amplify and adjust the lows, mids, and highs separately. This unparalleled control ensures the most accurate sound reproduction — perfect for building your ultimate SQ dream system.

For further refinement of the sound you can use the receiver's Auto Time Alignment feature to get the perfect stereo sweet spot. You can also connect the supplied microphone to the receiver and it'll automatically adjust the equalization to your vehicle's interior.

Classic styling and a pin-sharp OEL display

This receiver's style keeps up with its performance. The clean, uncluttered design features a fold-down face with a crisp 3-line full-dot LCD display. And you can choose from over 200,000 colors for the display and buttons — you won't have any problem matching the colors to match your dash (or your taste).

Pioneer DEH-80PRS

Plenty of expansion opportunities

In addition to CD playback, the receiver is ready to handle your digital media. Plug in your iPod® to one of the two rear USB inputs, and you'll be able to use the receiver's controls to access your playlists, with handy tools like Alphabet Search to help you find the song or album you want in a snap. For your other music sources, you'll find front and rear aux inputs and an SD card slot, too. You can control Pandora® Internet radio when your iPhone® is connected, and Pioneer's App Mode offers display and limited control of many other music apps.

Built-in Bluetooth®

Although you won't want anything disturbing your listening session when you're behind the wheel, it's nice to know that the DEH-80PRS offers built-in Bluetooth for the safety and convenience of hands-free calling. You won't fumble for the phone when a call comes in — just press a button and talk like your caller is sitting next to you.

Want to keep your car's steering wheel audio controls?

In most cars, you'll need an adapter to retain those controls with this car stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and radio, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. You'll see the adapters that work with your vehicle when you add this receiver to your cart.

Bluetooth note: Use of this receiver's Bluetooth features will depend upon your phone's Bluetooth capabilities. Learn more in our article explaining Bluetooth profiles.

iPod/smartphone note: If you're going to use your iPod or smartphone with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for compatibility information.

iPhone® 5 Note: You'll need to update this Pioneer receiver to enable Bluetooth control and metadata display for the iPhone 5 or other Apple iOS6 devices. This update requires a laptop with Bluetooth running Windows 7.

I've installed this unit in my last 2 vehicles and I love it. Love having all of my songs on the digital media. I can keep my cds in the house.

Pros: Don't have to bring my cds in the car, have most of my library on digital media, no disk jumping

so i have owned this head unit for a few years now and first thing ive noticed is my bass is less punchy and my mids and highs less loud before and after setting up the auto eq with time correction i didnt swap out to the old unit because Bluetooth and ipod compatibility to high then a year after the faceplate has gotten a mind of its own usually if i leave it up when on its going into random menus and screwing everything up every once in awial i can get back in and fix things this has been a bad experience.

Pros: lots of color options, ,hi mid low preouts , ease of use, memory card can save some options would like to see radio stations saved though.

Cons: when lose of power radio stations are lost, poor signal strength from preouts.

I've had this deck for a while now and feel like I can give it a proper review. It took a while to learn how to use the different features and navigate through them, but after a few weeks I started to get the hang of it. Its definitely not a simple to use radio but the benefits of the tuning capabilities make it worth the extra effort. I have mine running fully active and after learning how to use the level matching, separate l/r eq, and time alignment features, I have a Very Good sounding system now! The auto eq does an ok job for most, but if you want it to sound incredible, learn to do it yourself. Overall, I am very satisfied with this unit, imo the only other deck that competes with this one is the P99 which cost over 3X as much as the 80prs. Well worth the money!

Pros: Tuning capabilities, clean signal, looks

Cons: Hard to navigate, build quality could be better

Bring back separate volume knob, bring back adjustable custom EQ curve

The previous model, the DEH-P880PRS, had two separate knobs one of which was a dedicated to controlling the volume when turned. It was simple and easy to use while driving as you could do it quickly and without looking. With this model if you are not in the top menu, turning the knob doesn't change the volume. Let's face it, audiophile or not, changing the volume is the most common adjustment the driver will make; why would you make it more complicated? Another annoying change took place prior to the previous model. The more recent models have two "static" custom equalization settings. They also have preset equalization curves, such as bass boost, which are not static because the intensity of the curve can be increased or decreased. In the older model now going on 15 years ago (I think it was DEH-P9000R) the intensity of the custom curve could also be adjusted up or down. Adjusting the custom curve all the way down would bring it to flat. Although this older model only had one custom curve, the up/down adjustment essentially gave you more than two custom curves. Moreover, it is much more pleasing to the ear to make the adjustments this way rather than switching between flat and custom 1 or custom 2 because the when you switch curves there is an interruption in the music.very annoying. There is no gap in the sound when changing the intensity.

Pros: Fantastic abilities to tweak sound

Cons: Should have a separate volume knob like prior model did. Pioneer also had a better custom curve years ago which had the ability to increase or decrease the intensity of your custom curve.

    VERY NICE sounding unit!

Installed this in my '08 Miata to replace the muddy sounding non-Bose factory system. No amp and left the factory speakers in. After I did the Auto EQ/Time Alignment programming I amazed. Everything sounds very clear even with the top down. The bass output is better than in my previous Miata with Bose system. The menus are a little difficult to navigate and I wish you could go either direction when selecting sources. I was able to adjust the colors to math the red-ish buttons and orange display of the Miata. Overall, a very good stereo.

Pros: Great sound, advanced features, makes the factory speakers sound great.

Cons: Menus are difficult to navigate at first, display is hard to see in bright light.

This radio will not disapoint you, one of the nicest head units I have used, alot of advanced option with a lot of adjustment. But still every easy to use and just looks dang good. I installed it with stock speakers first, the sound quality was very good with stock speakers. I then hooked up pioneer stage 4 components and really made the system come to life.

By far the best HU I have ever owned! Installation was fast and easy with all new mounting hardware and harness supplied by Crutchfield. Norman answered all of my questions over the phone and pointed me to this receiver - this after being badgered by local "Alpine only" dealer. The sound is spectacular - cymbals, snare, guitar, vocals and piano all at their proper frequencies. Woodwinds, brass and strings perfect! Auto TA/EQ did not sound good so I reset the sound mod and used 16 channel EQ. Bass slope is easy to use and attenuated the unwanted frequencies at around 100k. I have no amps or component speakers other than a powered 13 year old 8" Bazooka. Running on HU power only - is clean and imaging is studio quality. Running 13 year old Infinity 8x6 Kappa 2 way in front with stock in rear door. This unit replaced 13 year old Pioneer of similar quality when CD player failed. My immediate reaction after install and preliminary eq was that this thing kicked major ***. It took a few days to get things dialed in. Blue tooth phone and player is flawless paired with iphone5. Unit has major "coolness" with option for simulated vintage VU meter (love the color change too). Crutchfield service was impeccable. Unit was delivered on day promised.

Pros: Superior sound quality with studio grade imaging! Easy to use once it's learned and full of options. Great value for budget audiophile car sound without getting into expensive amps and components.

    Cons: No cons!

This is a seriously impressive deck. I'm using the 3 way network mode currently. I've got an alpine 50x4 RMS for highs and an alpine 125x4 rms for mids. These are two 6.5 inch infinity kappa component sets. There is also an infinity 1300x1 rms powering 2 infinity kappa perfect 12s. All is nestled in a 2000 GMC Sierra xcab behind factory grills and under the rear seat. I will say that it takes a moment to get the hang of the settings menu but once familiarized, it is a breeze. Auto eq and time alignment worked remarkably well. It provided a great starting place. Bluetooth and iPod interface are also very easy to use and navigate. All in all this is a fantastic hu if you plan to build an active setup. The faceplate is deceiving considering what is lurking behind it. It allows me to have a fantastic system hidden in a daily driver without the worry of someone breaking in to steal it. I highly recommend.

Coming from the DEH-9400BH, this is an incremental improvement over an already excellent head unit. In my wife's car, Chrysler Pacifica, we seemed to have a time adjusting the 5 band EQ of the '9400 to her liking. The 80PRS is a very similar head unit, so there wasn't much learning curve, and having the 15 band Stereo EQ was what I was going for to get her "peaky" car environment under control.

After twiddling around with the EQ I decided to try the Auto EQ. Lets just say I'm a believer. It flattened out all the peaks and gave us a good level ground to adjust the sound to our liking, and the time alignment is amazing.

Pros: Sound quality. The best you can get for under $400. 5v preamp outputs make the noise floor disappear, 15 band EQ and time alignment are downright amazing... It's worth it simply for these features alone. The Burr-Brown DACs and the highly adjustable 3 way crossover network built in make this a steal. To get these features normally you'd have to spend at least a grand in external EQs and Crossovers.

Cons: This radio isn't for everyone. It's simply the best value in a true audiophile headunit. If you're looking for something simple to use with your iPhone or mp3s, look elsewhere. This headunit means business. About the only gripe I have, I will say I'm not a big fan of every function being buried in a menu :/ But it does keep the faceplate looking really clean and sharp.

A review from a bass heads point of view. I run a pretty complex setup, 3 way active front stage plus sub. I kept it in standard mode since my amps control the crossovers. Hertz HSK XLs and JL ZR800s up front powered buy 800 watts of JL Slash amps. Digital Designs 9512s in the back powered by a Digital Designs modded M4. Roughly 6000 watts of clean power and I use it all. The auto EQ did not work for me at all. I tried it with the sub amp up and down, it's just to much for it to blend. I have a RTA and did it manual. It also did not get my TA right, once again it's just to much. I did it manual. Basically it took me a few days to dial it in and I was hating it the whole time. I ended up turning auto EQ off and resetting the deck. Luckily my car has always sounded very good with little to no EQ, due to months of equipment searching and proper placement. Do I like it? I don't know yet. It's better then the Alpine CDA-117 it replaced in sound but not function. Looks has to go to the pioneer. Mine worked with the iPhone 5S right out the box, no update needed.

Absolutely perfect stereo. I have owned everything from cd and tape players to pure media players and this is absolute perfection, before you start getting into the super high end SQ decks of course. Easy to install as most decks are, although this one has better preamps and the "highs -mids-lows" option as well as the "front-rear-bass" configuration. Bluetooth built in...no satellite radio but I've never used it so its not a big deal for me (I'll stick to the vastness of the internet podcasts and radio services). Auxiliary and 2 usb ports as well as an sd card slot that I don't use but I could see where it could be really cool to keep favorite songs on there at all times. Bluetooth streaming is seamless...I have the Moto-X and whenever I get into the car, it just pairs up on its own and starts playing Pandora its awesome, virtually no noise, no hissing, no popping, just beautiful clean sound. The EQ is freaking awesome and a sinch to set up especially after having a good foundation to adjust from with the auto eq it does for you. The menu took some getting used to but after the first set up, you'll have it down. Also, although this is a dot display, its not like a regular old cheap dot display you see in some buckets. It looks deep, crisp, and clean and the density is one of the highest ones ive seen, really HIGH QUALITY.

I actually ended up returning the whole system as I was not satisfied by the sound quality and performance output. Because there are so many other components and factors, I am not sure of this head unit was a contributing factor to the failure or not. So I am not sure what "star" rating to give it. It could have been many other things. I researched and tuned the system for a full week. Even though I spent a lot of money thinking I would get an extremely great sounding audio system, It did not sound all that much better than the factory bose system. At least not for the price I paid.

I can say, that this head unit sounded great when I hooked it up directly using its internal amp. It has tons of adjustable perimeters, It looks really cool, and has lots of expandable features.

Pros: Looks, very adjustable, very expandable and high quality sound.

Being an Eclipse and Alpine fan historically I have over the past few years been switching over my vehicles to Pioneer for the iPhone/MP3 ease of control. The interface is much more subtle and quicker than the other two brands mentioned. This unit in particular replaced a newer Pioneer unit from last year and it's night and day when considering the sound quality and adjustment control using the parametric EQ. There are some limits to customization on the display and I'm not really into the flash side of mobile audio but the simply setting works fine and when the signal runs through 6 channels of Alpine amplifiers into Focal separates and JL Subs. totally changed the overall system. I'll keep this baby

Pros: Fully adjustable, complete control over EQ and incredible processing for crystal clear sound. You couldn't pay me to take it out

Cons: Pioneer always gets really close on the volume knob design but doesn't quite hit the mark. This is the closest yet but could be 70% as big and that would make adjustments much easier.

This head unit is just incredible. I have it hooked up to 2 MB Quart Reference series 640.4 amps. 1 of them is running at 4 channel mode to Pioneer components in the front and Polk audio 4X6 plate speakers in the rear. The rms output is around 80 watts per channel x 4. The other amp is bridged to 2 channels and running a pair of kicker Solobaric 10s in a sealed enclosure. The output there is 320X2. I am completely blown away by the sound quality. I am stunned by how clean and clear the sound is without even a hint of "hissss" on the quiet parts of the music. I did spend some time tweaking the 16 band equalizer And I have the subwoofer output turned down and crossed over at 100 htz. The sound quality is absolutely amazing. As for people saying it's a very hard head unit to learn, I say nonsense!! It's menus are plentiful but very easy to learn. I highly recommend this head unit as the brains for any amplified system. Love it

Pros: Everything, but most of all, the sound quality. I have a very discerning ear for my music and even I was shocked by the new details in songs that I have heard many times before.

    Cons: None. Period!

Very nice stereo with more features than I can figure out.

Pros: Lots more than I can list...

Cons: My con is that the install kit contained everything except wire nuts, which the install instructions said I would need. So I'm sitting in a truck, with the dash apart, windows open, parts everywhere, and no wire nuts! I say, charge me $5 more and include them. Other than than, great stereo and install. Could've been done in 10 minutes.

i am a real person who purchased this hu through crutchfield even though their price is not the cheapest you can find. i did this because crutchfield is literally the only consistently reliable customer service that i have ever dealt with, which makes their prices worth paying for.

this is the only affordable hu with time alignment, 3 way active crossovers, 16 band equalizer and striking aesthetics. there is not a better choice out there for a daily driver than this hu as far as functions and aesthetics. this is the ultimate upgrade because you will likely never need anything more than what this hu can provide.

pioneer makes fantastic and user friendly hu's and I recommend them to everyone. I am in no way endorsed by the company, I just appreciate affordable quality and will give credit where it is due.

I have installed and won trophies with car systems I've installed in IASCA competition. Not a novice. Installed this in my Wife's Mach I. It is the most difficult head set to operate I've ever seen. She hates it. It also has a functionality problem. When she uses her Ipod Touch the unit always wants to bring up Pandora. Even if it's not playing Pandora when she plugs the Touch in or turns on the head unit. You can use the Touch to bring up I-Tunes and I-Tunes will then play through the head unit but the Pandora display stays up on the screen with an error message and you have no control over the Touch from the head unit or any sort of ITunes display. The "band" button does nothing and if you cycle through the inputs it goes right back to Pandora when you bring up the Touches USB input and the cycle begins again. This is especially stupid since the Touch isn't even connected to Pandora. It has no phone/internet capabilities. Very disappointed in this product. Unfortunately it is now past 60 days so I'm going to put her Alpine unit back in and use this one as a paperweight.

    Pros: It makes noise.

Cons: It has MAJOR flaws. Hard to use. Not user friendly AT ALL.

    Great sound..auto eq...meh!

This unit sounds great and has a ton of user controls for a single din unit. As with most single dins, it is a little complicated to use as they pack a ton into that tiny screen. This unit has the most source inputs I've ever seen & I was particularly drawn to rca inputs to retain Sync. I only have two beefs and only one involves the unit. The Auto EQ and time alignment features are not very impressive. I ran them several times with the mic in several locations and they always created a mix that was way too heavy in the back speakers. It's asking a lot for a built in unit. I think the really cheap mic has a lot to do with it but I bagged that and went through the arduous process of eq"ing" myself. I'm also a little annoyed at Crutchfield's ride suggestion software which for some reason says that this unit does not fit in my f-150 but every other single DIN does....well it fits just fine and thanks for the extra headache of buying something because this wasn't offered. This is a standard size single DIN unit and if that size fits your application this unit fits..regardless of what the suggestion software says.

Pros: Solid sound, great user control, a ton of source inputs,

Cons: Auto EQ & TA is a little off and the mic is kind of cheap. Crutchfield's product advisor says this doesn't fit in my vehicle, which is stupid as it is a single DIN the same size as every other single DIN produced. Trying to find this unit and get accessories for it was a complete pain.

This head unit replaced a high end flip screen Pioneer unit that the gears for the flip screen went out on. It also needed to mate well with my amps and other components of my existing system. The sound quality on this unit SURPASSES my previous head unit. It has the crispness and clarity of high end headphones with the addition of sub woofer that headphones lack. The hands free phone function is also exceptional. It pares very well with ALL the functions of my android razor allowing me to use the hands free function to it's fullest.

Pros: Superior sound quality. Great hands free phone function.

Cons: Owners manual on disc. It's information can also be a little difficult to decipher.

    Very tough to install

This is not as easy to install as you might think. And the technical support, though the wait wasn't bad, were not much help getting the heater cable unhooked in order to remove the old radio. Yes, they supply all the parts (I think, I've yet to finish the installation), but there is a lot of splicing. There are no easy shortcuts. I'm taking it to installer after spending several hours trying to unhook the heater cable in my 2008 Subaru Outback. And the "Master Sheet" they send you refers to the extra connectors that they send you and their instructions. I finally gave up on the phone support as he had never installed one of these in my model car and relied on photos that he sent me via eMail.

Pros: It will probably be nice.

Cons: ...if I can ever get it installed. Better to buy from a reputable company that both sells and installs their equipment. Crutchfield can't install it for you unless you live in Virginia.

The DEH-80PRS has a great sound and many options with which you can adjust the sound to your own preference. To me the manual for the radio could be better, I had to call Crutchfield's tech department to figure out a couple of items. The Tech from Crutchfield was great and took care of my problem. I really like that the unit offers USB, SD, and ipod hookup and control, all work great. The CD player in the unit also sounds great but I imagine I'll be using mostly ipod and SD's to hold all my music. I'm very satisfied with with the unit and glad I picked this one instead of a cheaper unit (you get what you pay for!) Highly recommend the unit.

Pros: Great sound - many music options from which to choose - looks great in my truck - The adapters that Crutchfield sends are great, it would have taken three times as long to install the unit without the adapters and wiring harness Crutchfield gives you!

Cons: Owners manual could be better and explain things in simpler terms Overall menu on the unit is kind of complicated and takes some time to get use too. Once you learn it you're ok. Would be nice to have some sort of re-set buttons to recall favorite radio stations. You can save your favorites but it's not as easy as having buttons.

This head unit really brings the excitement back into car audio sound quality. I've had this unit in my car for about 4 months now. Here are some things I learned about it: -The graphic equalizer seems to really perform, if you know what you're doing, small tweeks can make an incredible difference to the sound quality. Like most people have said, initially I thought it sounded just okay, but then in my case I just took the 8khz down a couple notches to smooth out my MB Quart tweeters, and the result is amazing, most music really comes to life now with just this minor tweek. -The onboard amp wouldn't cut it for my power hungry speakers, sound quality is way better once I hooked up an amp. For some reason on this deck, I have to turn my amp gains WAY up (like 3/4 to max) to get the best sound quality and volume level. Initially I had some noise when I did this, but then discovered that my RCA cables had intermittent faulty connections on the grounds. Found this with an ohm meter and pulling slightly on the cables. Once this was fixed, it is noise free, and then sound quality improved even more. -I have found that 192K WMAs sound really good to me on this deck. Sounds better than playing MP3s at higher rates to me. -90% of my music sounds better on this deck than any previous deck I've had. 10% of my music sounded better on an old school Alpine I had in a previous car. Could be car acoustics difference, or any number of reasons for that. I'm happy with 90%.

Pros: Sound Quality. Amazing amount of useful features and flexibility. Price is great considering what you get.

Cons: Nitpicks: can't turn off the key beep, faceplate is polished and can reflect sunlight easily (but I think problem is particular to my car mounting angle). Slightly difficult to operate and understand, but the manual is very well written and can guide you through it all.

First, let me say how great Crutchfield is. I ordered the p99rs by accident and I was able to send it back in exchange for this one and was refunded the difference...I love these guys! The 80prs is awesome! It has a calibration mic, auto time-alignment and auto eq just like their home receivers do. It can run a component speaker set without the need for the passive crossovers so you can tune them to your liking. It has several USB inputs, bt, pandora, mp3 playback, 5v pre-outs; I mean the list keeps going. Long story short, I love this receiver and highly recommend it. It can be confusing to use at first because of all the features but you'll get the hang of it.

    Pros: Has almost everything.

Cons: Can be a little difficult to use at first and the manual only comes on a disk.

I bought this unit to replace an aging Panasonic CDQDF583U, which replaced an Alpine and a Kenwood unit on my 25 year old ADS / US Amps /JL Audio system in my 96 Ram 1500. The system originally was powered by a Pioneer DEH 66 and Pioneer 1/2 DIN graphic equalizer in my 77 Mercedes. Old stuff, but great sound. The Panasonic sounded good, but not great, and it was getting sensitive to road shock and the graphic was dying. When I first installed the DEH-PRS80, it was a significant improvement in sound quality. I was a little skeptical, but used the auto-equalization feature to see if there would be an improvement. The auto EQ was nothing short of amazing. The system sounds better than ever. Superb clarty and spatial positioning. The auto EQ appears to reset the baseline EQ for all the selectable EQ settings. My only issue is that with a variety of music sources, I generally like a little more bass than the auto EQ provides, and some tracks need a little less bass boost. There is no quick access to adjust the subwoofer output. That requires slogging through the menu and is not something you want to do while driving. On the plus side, one of the two 'custom' EQ options offers the abilitiy to set up EQ and level for each input source individually...a big help with making the XM receiver sound better than it is. As with most removeable face units, the controls and faceplate don't feel solid to the touch, but the controls are easy to use.

Pros: Great sound. Auto EQ really works. Backlighting can be adjusted to match vehicle lights. Decent display legibility.

Cons: No easy way to adjust subwoofer level 'on the fly'.

I purchased this on 12/23/2012. At first I was not that impressed. I installed and played a song with default settings. I have Pioneer 6 1/2 TS-A1604C components up front and Scosche 5 1/4 3 way for rears.

Far from top notch speakers but way better than the stock in a 2003 L200 Saturn. The fronts are amped from a Boss CX600 4 channel 75 watt rms X 4. Haven't hooked up the rears to the amp yet. The gain for the front is adjuststed so I don't blow the speakers as will the rear even less when connected. Gain set at about 70% rear will be 60%.

After spending a lot of time learning how to fine tune this head unit and tuning it to the speakers I have it is phenominal. Can't imagine with a midrange set of speakers. I'm not a big base person. Can't stand hearing cars coming up the road that you can hear way before they get near your house. To me this drowns out the rest of the music.

This head unit with the speakers I have tuned to my liking puts out more than enough base for me. You wouldn't think but especially the 5 1/4 3 way Scosche's in the rear. It sounds as good as my Onkyo TX-NR609 home set up. I was thinking about maybe getting a small sub set up but I'm not so sure it will be of any benefit.

My ears are ringing when I listen to music at 45 out of 62 volume setting.

The amount of features you get with this head unit for the price is amazing. It is well worth your time to learn how to use all the features.

    Vinny in little Rhode Island

Pros: Phenominal sound quality for the price. As good as much more expensive head units. I like having my music collection on 1 usb stick and not carying a bunch of cd's around. usb music sounds as good as cd's.

Cons: Some say the build quality. I have no problems with it for the price.
