Overview

Our take on the Pioneer AVH-P8400BH

Have it all
The AVH-P8400BH sits at the top of Pioneer's DVD receiver lineup for 2012, offering a 6.95" touchscreen display, customizable display colors, built-in Bluetooth®, and an HD Radio™ tuner, along with some cool new features that'll really enhance your car audio and video experience. Plus, you can remove the AVH-P8400BH's detachable face — an unusual feature on DVD receivers — when you leave the car, giving you peace of mind when you've parked in a questionable spot.

Plus, you can remove the AVH-P8400BH's detachable face — an unusual feature on DVD receivers — when you leave the car, giving you peace of mind when you've parked in a questionable spot.

The MIXTRAX experience
Pioneer's MIXTRAX technology adds DJ-inspired audio and visual effects to your music. Once you use the included MIXTRAX PC software to analyze your music, the AVH-P8400BH will create non-stop mixes, complete with visual effects. You can also use MIXTRAX as an app with your iPhone® or iPod touch®. Load it up and control the app from the receiver's touchscreen to get the party started.

Pioneer AVH-P8400BH

Advanced App Mode
The Advanced App Mode adapts technology originally developed for Pioneer's AppRadio™ to this receiver. When you've connected your iPhone with Pioneer's CD-IU201S cable (not included), you'll be able to control apps like MotionX GPS Drive, INRIX traffic, Rdio, and PANDORA®, along with new apps as they're developed.

Impressive A/V capabilities
Think of this Pioneer as a music hub for your car. Play your store-bought and home-burned CDs and DVDs. Or connect your iPod® or iPhone, then take control from the receiver's big touchscreen. Plug in your iPhone with the CD-IU201S cable and take charge of your Pandora® account from the touchscreen, complete with thumbs-up and thumbs-down controls — you can view video content from your iPod or iPhone, too. Your iPhone will charge up fast when the battery is low, thanks to the 1-amp USB port.

detachable face

If you're into video, you'll love the big 7" LCD screen. You can watch DVDs in bright, clear detail when you're parked, and the dual-zone output allows you to send video content to screens in the back of your car, so the kids can enjoy a video while you listen to a different source up front.

Sound advantages
The receiver's built-in amp has the horsepower to keep up with the receiver's great looks, delivering crisp, clean sound that you can tailor with the 8-band equalizer. To get the perfect sound, use the auto-equalization feature to tune your system (microphone required). If you'll building a system, the three pairs of preamp outputs send a 4-volt signal to your external amps.

Stay on track and stay safe
Pioneer's AVIC-U220 navigation module gives the AVH-P8400BH full-fledged navigation capabilities. And you can add a rear-view camera to the receiver's cam input — it'll make backing up larger vehicles a lot safer in tight spots.

Want to keep your car's steering wheel audio controls?
In most vehicles, you can use an adapter (not included) to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this Pioneer stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and the Pioneer, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls.

Bluetooth note: Use of this receiver's Bluetooth features will depend upon your phone's Bluetooth capabilities. Learn more in our article explaining Bluetooth profiles.

Note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check Details for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver or its optional iPod adapter.

iPhone® 5 Note: You'll need to update this Pioneer receiver to enable Bluetooth control and metadata display for the iPhone 5 or other Apple iOS6 devices. This update requires a laptop with Bluetooth running Windows 7.

I installed this stereo into my 2005 Toyota Tacoma and It's one of the best stereos I have ever purchased. And improve the sound quality of my factory system. Highly recommend this product to anybody wanting a touchscreen's car stereo.

This is my second Pioneer double DIN and I love it. Sound quality is superb, internal amp powers factory speakers very nicely, the display looks great and love the removable face. My only complaint sometimes searching songs and other navigation can be slow and jittery, minor issue with the other positives above. All I will buy is Pioneer head units from now on.

Pros: Fit and Finish, great screen, great sounding amp, internal DAC vs iPod DAC, HD radio built in

Cons: Menus can be slow at times. At the bottom of the radio is a bar that sticks out with volume, menu, track up down, and is not that attractive.

First, I installed this in a 2004 Nissan Frontier XE King Cab (non Rockford Fosgate system) - my truck only has the door speakers and two tweeters, stock. I wanted, Bluetooth, iPhone 4 support, USB connectivity and especially important to me was a tilting screen. In the Frontier, the radio is a little low and I was concerned that the angle would be hard to read. The titling takes care of that. What is really nice is when you set the tilt, and power off the truck, when you start the truck, the screen will return to the tilt angle you originally set. Adjusting the tilting angle also helps make it visible depending on where the sun is shinning in from. I have tinted windows so the sun isn't really an issue. I opted for this model over the 2013 model because I wanted the dual USB ports over the HDMI port. Prior to the radio being delivered, I went ahead and installed my Alpine speakers (I had a gift card to a different retailer, sorry Crutchfield). The speakers sounded great at the store (amped) but sounds terrible in my truck (un amped). Once the HU arrived, man of man did these speakers come alive! I mean holy wow! I was going to run an Alpine amp to them but I don't think I need to now. Instead I'll run the amp to the sub. Between the EQ, Loudness, and low and high pass filters, this unit does everything I wanted. Oh, some reviewers have had issues with detaching the face. I can't imagine what they are doing wrong, its dirt simple. Slide switch and lift up. I would buy again.

Pros: Amazing sound, built in amp drives my Alpine 6.5 just fine, menu navigation is straight forward but there is a little bit of a learning curve but just getting more familiar with the system and the location of the controls and it'll become more intuitive.

Cons: My truck is bouncy so when using the touch screen, you may have a couple of times to get the right button (no fault of the radio) .I find myself using the remote quite a bit to adjust volume and change presets. This is where a physical volume knob like other units have is really a plus. Lack of a physical control knob is MY ONLY ISSUE and I can live without it since it does everything else so well. Manual lacks examples of why one might use a feature. Otherwise, manual is just a manual.

This unit has probably the most features of any other unit you'll find at this price. 2 USB slots, an SD card slot, HD radio, etc. I am upgrading from the factory Bose head unit in my 2006 Sierra and the sound of this unit, even with the equalizer on flat, completely blows away the factory one. I ended up not keeping it, though. The number one reason for this was because you cannot turn off the beep sound for the buttons or touch screen. Every time you adjust the volume, change the station, or do anything else, the unit makes a beeping noise. While this may not sound like that big of a deal, I don't like it and it gets very old pretty quickly. The second thing I didn't like about it was the graphics of the unit. Pioneer really pushes the MIXTRAX feature, which is really not my style. I prefer a clean screen without much going on in the background. However, if you don't mind the beeping every time you touch the screen or a button, the unit is top notch. Great buy, overall.

Pros: Sound quality. Features relative to price.

    Cons: Beeping

I bought this unit to replace the factory stereo in my 2011 Ford F150. I also wanted a unit with a back up camera and HD radio. This unit is great, I love being able to use Pandora, I-Heart Radio, and my GPS apps. My only complaint is the instructions are not very well laid out. You really have to hunt to find something. I'm still playing with the brightness and contrast adjustments, it's kind of hard to see in bright sunlight.

Pros: Easy to use, well laid out. Pandora, I-Heart Radio, Iphone 4 app use

Cons: Instruction manual needs an index

Great radio. The value is only diminished by the need to spend hundreds more an cables. THREE additional expensive cables (and four firmware updates) are required to get this to work with the iPhone 5. Additionally, there is NO reason my passenger cannot enter Nav data while I drive.

    Pros: Very versatile

    Cons: Additional cables required.

Nice radio, good quality, only issue is I have a iphone 5 which the adapter kit for this particular model cost extra. Plus you have to do the update thru pioneer which seems easy enough, but attempted it today and now my radio won't turn on. Pioneer offers to do the update for a fee so I'd you do have these wants I would opt to pay instead of DIY.

Pros: Clear screen, options for days

Cons: iPhone 5 compatibility hoops I have to jump thru.

This unit is a pretty good choice for a 2012 left over. My main problem with the head unit is that the Pioneer CD-IU201S iphone/ipod connection wire and the Pioneer AVIC-U250 GPS use the same port/plug. So if you bought both of those products, you can only use 1. I'm pretty sure the Pioneer XM option also plugs into the same plug. I opted to not use the special iphone adapter wire, and stick with the GPS. I have not upgraded the firmware yet. I still have the iphone4 (for now) and can use the USB wire or Bluetooth to listen to Pandora, Spotify and my playlist, with full control of the app. So, I a little confused as to what that wire would have really given me. I use the other USB port for an external 1TB hard drive. The unit seems to have some minor problems with that setup. Sometimes mp3's will not show up to play, for those files I have to delete from the harddrive then re-pull them back in and the unit will recognize the mp3's. Also, when the unit first turns on, it has problems connecting/mounting the harddrive and I get the error message to retry and connect. It never reconnects using that prompt, but will automatically connect after a minute. That issue could be from having such a large hard drive, but I can't be sure. Video looks good, but it's not HD video. The sound coming from a DVD is awesome, almost as good as a home theater when testing with the DVD Kill Bill. Overall, I happy with my purchase and Crutchfield had the best price w/ install kit

Pros: Rear view camera option, 2 USB inputs, front memory card slot

Cons: Display can be hard to see in the daytime, Display can not dim at night, 1 port for multiple addons

I had HIGH HOPES for this unit based on the other reviews. I bought it and received it and I tried to upgrade its firmware to the latest version so that it would be compatible with iOS 6.1.3 (iPhone 5, basically). I tried for HOURS to get the firmware to upgrade, but every attempt resulted in an error. If you search & google, you'll find many people in the same boat as I am. In a nutshell.... this unit will not accept Pioneer's firmware upgrade. If you have an iPhone 5, you're screwed......

    Pros: Totally nice looking

    Cons: Firmware upgrade nightmare.............

My 2006 crossover lacked USB connection, Bluetooth, rear view camera, Pandora, IPOD connectivity, DVD and straight audio sound quality. This unit not only brings my car's features up to spec with my wife's new infinity, but it even looks factory installed. It was simple to install, provides a removable face and even mixes songs on my playlists. The digital tuner brings out the best out of local stations and phone calls are a breeze to channel through with good Apple iphone connectivity and microphone. Now, my wife's 10 speaker Infinity's factory Bose system does not sound half as good as my old Pontiac and it has the same bells and whistles for a very cool price. Thanks Crutchfield.

Pros: Excellent features, great looks, awesome resolution, very cool motorized face action, equalizer is a hoot. Brings every hot hi-tech features into your old car.

Cons: Instructions for the factory amplifier connection were omitted from my order but a simple email got it solved within hours.

Really like the unit. Be sure to get a micro bypass if your wanting to watch movies while in motion. It made my stock speakers actually sound good. Very simple to install too. I had to drive 210 miles right after installing it, and two movies later I was very impressed with the picture and sound quality.

Pros: Almost everything is a pro about this unit. I'm a apple fan so that is the biggest pro to me.

Cons: The only real problem I have is the issues it has if you connect the cord to your iPhone before the Bluetooth connects. The blue tooth connects fast, so it's not really a issue until you leave your phone pluged in and shut the vehicle of to get gas ect.

I saved up for a while to purchase this unit for my vehicle. I've always been a fan of pioneer and their products so I figured investing this much would be worth it. Im soo disappointed! The unit wasnt even installed for a week before it started having issues engaging the face plate on to the unit. The main reason I selected this unit over others was because of the theft deterrent it offered, so spending 20-30 minutes trying to install the face plate on every time I got in my vehicle made me want to just leave it on and not remove it, which of course defeated the purpose. It didnt help that when I called "tech support", the guy was highly rude and talked down to me! I expected more from Crutchfield.

Pros: The screen looks amazing! It really does bring your stock speakers to life. Easy to use when it actually works. Pandora from android works via Bluetooth. And calls via Bluetooth work and sound very clear (android operating system).

Cons: You can't hide annoying music information when its playing, so your wallpaper is basically hidden all the time, unless you turn the head unit off. Wallpaper that you use has to have a specific format of JPEG or will not work! Pain to reattach the faceplate !!!

The unit is great, I installed in my 2003 matrix and programmed the color to red to match the dashboard lights. It sounds way better than the stock receiver. Most touch screens I have used in the past only worked if you touched it with your finger tips but this one even works if only your finger nail touches the screen. Very easy to navigate and adjust your settings

I love this receiver, and how it has upgraded the entertainment value of my 2005 Mustang convertible. I now have hands-free, bluetooth phone calling; audio streaming; full EQ control; USB access (2!), CD/DVD, AUX and much better sound. It's not perfect, as you can see in my Cons comments below. But it is well worth the replacement cost of my old Shaker 500 HU. The install is fairly easy, although I did get stumped at one point regarding wiring the Ford harness to the radio wires. A quick call to Crutchfield at 9:20pm, immediately speaking to a knowledgeable human being, and the question was answered. I love that. I would recommend this radio to anyone who really wants to upgrade a stock stereo. In the overall scheme of things, the Pros rule, and the Cons are minor considerations.

Pros: Bluetooth support Hands-free phone support; microphone works very well Streaming audio USB access Touch sensitive screen Changeable colors, backgrounds Equalizer settings: lots of choices and control HD radio Crutchfield support

Cons: Car battery drains quickly when used and the car is not running Auto EQ Measurement can give poor settings Can't use the phone dial pad if the car is in gear MixTrax: lame Special, obtrusive, expensive cable required if you want AppRadio support. I would rather be able to use my own TRRS AUX cable/jack and iPhone cable in order to run apps on the HU

No complaints, this unit exceeded all of my expectations. I installed a Kenwood DDX419 in a friends car last year, the Pioneer is superior in every way, there is just no comparison. I also purchased the GMOS-100 adapter which is somewhat tricky to install however when finished it too works well. It is critical to follow all the instructions and clear the can bus of any faults before installing otherwise you will lose some of the function such as chimes and steering wheel controls. If this happens, remove the module, clear the bus and re-install.

Pros: Great sound, HD radio tuner, Flawless hands free phone

Cons: motorized face-plate can be difficult to reattach

Pros: Love the Appradio mode and the fact that a lot of my existing apps on my phone works wonderfully with the receiver. Customizing the keys on the receiver to match my car's display is cool.

Very very excellent head unit. 2 draw backs to look at. Not android app capable. And in order to play videos while not in a parking brake you have to install a switch instead of a relay. It has a back up PB reader. Relay is to fast.

Pros: Bright. Beautiful interface. Fast. Responsive screen. Removable face. HD and BT. Also basically removes the need for a door speaker amp. Head unit is that powerfull.

Cons: NEED to use a switch not a relay. And not Andriod app capable.

Fantastic audio! Simple install using Scoshie dash kit for 2012 Tacoma. This unit required little manual reading to get to know its operation. I will pass on that the screen brightness can be found in "setup/picture adjustment" I have seen several people's comments that the display is too light - I guess they had not found the dimmer in setup. I too am an Android phone devotee and would like to see more support, but I bought this for the music not for the games. I have a 32GB mini SDHC nearly filled with music and don't miss the commercials. I know that I can stream music from my android (using the Blutooth connection) but why when the SDHC works sooo well. The hands free phone via blutooth works as good or better than most OEM installs. This unit not only sounds GREAT, it does everything I want a Head Unit to do.

Pros: Superb Sound! Unmatched display colors/resolution Fantastic sound reproduction throughout the frequency spectrum - Plenty of volume. Asthetically an eye catcher!

Cons: I-phone compatible in an Android market! When is Pioneer going to give us a firmware update? Sad that I didn't buy it sooner!

Hesitated on buying a month until pioneer put out the press release that it will sell an iPhone 5 cable and software update in march 2013. Couldn't be happier!

Installed in a 2004 Avalanche. I added nuts as spacers to the mounting screws for my situation to allow it to fit in my dash properly. The unit is well featured and was easy to learn to operate. The sound is great and is a 1000% improvement over my stock CD changer that is a bunch of GM Delco junk (went through two of them within three years). I installed the Pioneer with a Crutchfield supplied mounting kit and a CRUX SOOGM-15 to retain steering wheel controls. I added a Sound Ordnance B-8PT, also from Crutchfield, to give my system that extra bass punch! Sale pricing for the Pioneer and Sound Ordnance was icing on the cake! Great followup from my adviser, Dylan!!! Crutchfield is THE BEST RETAILER out there!!!!

Pros: Excellent equalizer and bass controls. Remote control operation. Nice size touchscreen display.

Cons: Instructions are not clear regarding faceplate removal, which will tilt out to remove it. I originally installed my unit protruding way out, until I later realized you can selectively tilt the faceplate out to remove it, requiring me to remount the unit (resulting in a more flush and agreeable installation).

After researching many similar units for my 07 Toyota Tundra, I decided to drop my hard earned money on this bad boy and I am sure glad I did. This is a gem of a unit and I was even told by Best Buy, who installed it that it was Pioneers top unit. I was thinking about replacing my stock speakers because they sounded horrible with the factory unit. But once this unit was installed, I was blown away the sound coming from the stock speakers. I was in the installation bay when they were testing it and they were cranking the volume and the stock speakers sounded awesome. I spent the extra money on the advanced iPod cable and it is great. The additional USB port is a plus too. The installers flush mounted the USB cable in to my top glove compartment in my truck. There are so many great things to say about this unit but so little time to name them all. You will not be disappointed with this purchase. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!

Pros: iPod control, DVD, Hands free phone feature, Advanced App capability, beautiful 7" display, SD Card slot, USB port, etc, etc!!!!

Cons: You are only able to save 1 picture to your unit if you want to use it as your background pic. Not really a con, but you will need to play around with it a while to fully feel comfortable using it. There are so many features to learn.

Bought this for hands free blue tooth, navigation, and ipod. Well having the iphone 5 really put a damper on my expectations. Every call I got people had a hard time understanding me. Since Apple's iphone 5 won't put out video, the navigation was no good. Then it would not charge my ipod over night, come on Pioneer, seriously? Thank God Crutchfield has an excellent return policy. They were very helpful in the installation too. Also the ipod cable you have to buy is only 3', which means it will barely make it to the glove box.

Pros: I learned that I should question my Apple purchases since they don't to want to play well with others.

For some reason, I do not know why, aftermarket head unit makers seem to have the idea that everyone loves Apple and all things that start with the letter "i". I used to love Pioneer products, but as my first line states, this unit is so tied into Apple ans iPhone and iPods etc, that all or most of the unique or awesome features require some sort of Apple product tie in. If you don't have an iPhone 4, I would not bother with this unit. The only thing that I have found to work is the bluetooth music streaming and answering phone calls, there is little support for Android phones. If you look closely at all the app center items, the GPS, all the little features that make you think how awesome this is, understand you have to have an iPhone to make 99 percent work. This will be the last expensive Pioneer DVD head unit I will buy. If I put a DVD in to watch, yes the sound is very nice as is the picture quality, if I listen to the radio, again great sound, good HD station reception. Nice amounts of pre outs and inputs. But for an Android user, just get a nicer much cheaper DVD head unit.

Pros: Good sound quality, good picture quality, nice adjustments that can be made for the eq. It does look nice in the dash.

Cons: Not worth the money if you do not have an iPhone 4, mostly all the fancy features require something Apple to make them work, zero Android phone support except streaming audio and blue tooth calls. Save your money and get a different model if you would like a better than stock DVD head unit, for the money and the phone in my pocket a lower priced Jensen would have done just as well.

I've been looking for a radio for five years that had all the functions I wanted with the price range I was lookin to spend. This one here has ment all my expectations. I'm very satisfied with my radio. Thanks!

Pros: I like that the Bluetooth is built in and also ready for XM. It's the full 7" screen I've been looking for. I'm able to connect back up camera. Best of all it's in the price range I was looking to spend.

Cons: The clarity of the music could be clearer. But this is a small issue that doesn't bother me. So far I've had no problems except a few times when I turned on my truck and the screen opened and would not let me turn it on. It's wanted me to take it off. By the way the screen is really hard to put back on. I've fought with it for 10 min trying to put back on with out breaking anything.

The AVH-P8400BH was everything I was hoping it would be, especially for the price. Two weeks after I purchased this unit however, Pioneer announced the release of the X8500BHS, which has integrated support for iPhone5 and Android for advanced app mode. Kinda wish I would have waited, but then chances are I would run into a similar iPhone 6 issue :-/. Other than that, the head unit is an amazing work of art.

Cons: Lack of support for Androids and iPhone5. Lack of support for firmware upgrades to allow for things such as support for future phones.

This replaced the head unit in my STi. It was night and day difference between the two. I had a couple of bad units. Only reason I have it four stars is due to it's screen. It fades very easily in the sun. Other than that, this thing is loaded with features that I like: HD Radio, App Radio to use my MotionX GPS (have to pay more to MotionX) and plenty of adjustments to sound. My components are amplified but my rear speakers are powered by this head unit and it sends plenty of juice. Again, the display could be better for something advertising 1.3 million pixels-but hey, it's only $600-$650.

Pros: AppRadio (iPhone 4/4S enables Pandora free or Pandora One, several GPS apps, equalizer, too many pros to add.

Ok I was hesitant about purchasing this unit because of some negative reviews. I researched for a really long time & it came down to just deciding whether I needed the GPS or not. I decided to just go with this unit & if I needed a GPS I would just purchase the add-on...(which, in my opinion, is a bit expensive & didn't get good reviews). I don't mind using my Android for Google maps Ok first of all I installed this unit myself with a video bypass. It was a piece of cake. I also purchased the harness for my car.. It works awesome! Sounds amazing! looks beautiful, & it's a solid unit. It plays DVD-R movies which was a concern for me since I have many backup movies. The removable face is great because I have a convertible! The bluetooth is flawless with both the Samsung Galaxy Nexus & iPhone. I also purchased the CD-IU201V Cable to be able to plug my iPod or iPhone directly into it. This works great because you can just leave the iPod in your console/glove cmprtmnt & control it from the head unit.. Searching through songs takes a little bit of time though maybe like 3-5 seconds to give you the list but it works really well. **The bluetooth feature for androids will only be good for Phone use (contacts, calls etc) & streaming audio. That's it. Unless you have an iPhone this head unit is limited with it's connectivity & features. But if you have Pandora or any other audio running on your android it will stream it seamlessly..But it won't provide the audio info on the unit.

Pros: Solid Unit Removable Face Nice, bright screen Touch screen is great Bluetooth Advanced App Rear View Camera DVD Playback 2 USB Inputs Adds all contacts from phone automatically

Cons: This is another iPhone -made head unit. If you have an android it will only be good for bluetooth (calls & streaming audio). I would've gave this 5stars if it were android compatible Haven't figured out a way to completely shut off the screen (but this might be my issue) Really not many other cons for me... Great job Pioneer!!!

I purchased this HU based upon Crutchfield's claim that it is compatible with Motionx GPS Drive in advanced app mode. NOT! At least not when the car is moving, which negates the value of a navigation app (duh). I have since returned the unit to the licensed Pioneer dealer where I bought it - for a full refund. All of this venting is moot, I am sure, as I guarantee you that Crutchfield will not publish a review that is as critical of them as of the product. But at least I feel better that I didn't ultimately waste my money on a product that does NOT do as advertised. Come on, Crutchfield, tell it like it is if you want to sustain your credibility. You may not always be the vendor where final purchase is made, but a lot of people do visit your site for information and technical details.

    Pros:

    Cons:

Crutchfield response on November 13, 2012 Motion-X navigation can be displayed while the vehicle is in motion by using the optional CD-IU201S cable.

I bought the Pioneer AVH-P8400BH DVD receiver because I wanted and needed something that had a fully detachable face, and this is it. The receiver is expandable, so you can add navigation, and iphone control, It accepts USB and SD cards, although the 2 USB ports are in the back of the receiver. I also like the fact that you can change the color of the display to match your dash. The bluetooth works well and is very convenient, Be aware that you can only view video and pictures when the car is in park, meaning that if you choose not to hook up the park brake cable wire, then all you have is a music player but even then it's still looks good in the dash. I would recommend this receiver to anyone looking for features and security.

Pros: Looks good, sounds good, and has plenty of features.

Cons: Does not play music file on USB and SD cards in alphabetical order, plays it in some other order. The user guide say it plays by creation date, but I doubt that. However, this is a small issue.

I love the tag feature it has when listening to HD radio...Seen a review about it not showing info on radio stations...it does on the HD stations and now a days 95% of the stations are HD. I dont even have the iPhone cable just yet to get the most out of the radio, but the sound quality from my stock radio to this radio without new speakers was kinda mind blowing. I've had other aftermarket stereos in my vehicle (04 grand prix) and they didnt produce the quality this one puts out, and it looks as close to factory as you can get without being factory.

Pros: Sound, Looks, Easy Use, Not bank Braking, Makes everything better

Cons: Did need some slight help installing because i didnt have the bypass module for the parking brake. Older car problems

This is a great product and great buy. Couldn't be happier. I have a 2007 Saab 9-3, so it was difficult to find the appropriate parts for a double din basket, harness, etc. Worst Buy didn't offer anything, and the Dork Squad didn't want to touch the car, believing it had fiber optics. Crutchfield had the best prices for this radio and offered Excellent phone service. I tried to put it in myself after ordering several aftermarket parts overseas, but went to Abt. Abt is awesome. Their installers are experienced knowledgable, and efficient. Thank you Crutchfield for the great video reviews, details about the product, and write-ups. I felt like I already knew the product when it was received. Many people have negative things to say about the 8400BH regarding the AdvAppMode. It works fine. No glitches, only if you attach your iPod/Phone before the Bluetooth sync will you have issues. If there is a glare in the screen on a sunny day, be sure your staller has adjusted the dim mechanism with your headlights (daytime running lights) so that you can cure this issue. Abt did this without my prompting.

    Pros: ALL

Cons: Screen seems a bit soft. Keep your nails trim.

First, the positive: -This unit really sounded much better than my previous Pioneer Premier F90BT. There was a notable clarity once I switched to it. -I can connect two ipods to it rather than just one. -The G.U.I. was also very appealing. -Not having a bunch of harnesses in the back of the unit was also a plus and made installation a lot easier. -Most of the issues with the head unit appear to be software based, and hopefully will be fixed soon -The screen has a very vivid and clear resolution. It is definitely one of the nicer screens I have seen. -Very quick load up time. Unit is ready to go in seconds from turning the car on. The Negative: -The screen goes dead and does not respond to any touches intermittently. Considering so many features are controlled by touching the screen, this is a bad deal. -If you're using an iphone, the iphone alert sound effects come though when listening to Pandora or the ipod feature from the iphone. Im not sure if it's a head unit issue or a iphone issue, but when driving to music this is annoying. -The GPS apps are garbage. PERIOD. -If you connect the iphone before the Bluetooth connects, it causes all sorts of problems.

Pros: Crisp Screen, great sound, capable of being connected to two ipods at once! quick load up

Cons: App radio needs to be reworked, availability of good gps apps is almost zilch, bluetooth issues, gps is iphone based and if its connected before bluetooth is connected it will not function properly, almost not at all.

I bought this to replace the Stock stereo in my Mustang. Overall it is a VERY NICE stereo.. The BlueTooth is very easy to set up and my iPhone 4s links up with no problems at all. Don't have the Satellite hook up so nothing to say about that. The HD radio is really nice too. Great reception. DVD's look good too. Some have mentioned about glare. But, I don't have that with my car. Probably depends on the car.. I have the iPhone interface. That works good. Cable is a little bulky though. It is nice to be able to hook up the iPhone and control everything from the deck, like Pandora, and the music interface. The AppRadio apps for the most part are nice. There are a few glitches with the various apps. The NAV free app seems to work great. No need to get the nav unit from Pioneer.

Pros: As I mentioned above, most features on the unit are great and work fine. Bluetooth, Pandora, iPhone interface, DVD's and the HD radio.

Cons: The AppRadio apps are a little glitchy at times. If you are listening to the regular HD radio then decide to switch to the Apps, the HD radio still will play. You then have two different songs playing. You have to switch the radio to the iPod selection to get the radio to stop. Then it takes a bit for the CarMedia player to start and take over. The iPhone cable is a little bulky too.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This might be a great stereo. I do not know because mine isnt installed yet. I am very used to doing things on my own around the home and office. I worked Desktop support for many years and consider myself pretty good with electronics. Through the years I installed many radios in my own cars and friends. I just go around to hooking up the wiring harness. Bought everthing from Crutchfield needed to make this work. The problem is the instructions... I have a VW R32 08 (basically a suped up GTI) and for the most part the wiring seems straight forward. The problem is, the Pioneer came with NO instructions other then how to use it. Nothing tells you what color wire gos to what. I am not ASSUMING the yellow wire of the PAC unit goes to the yellow wire of the Pioneer 8400 or any other color for that matter. Beyond that, the steering wheel control actually has to be programed? Seriously? Its been a while since I installed a radio and maybe this is common place these days but I simply wasnt expecting this load of work. Not that I cant do it but honestly had I know before diving in, I might have opted to have a car stereo place install it instead. Maybe my review isnt fair but sorry, Pioneer did not include even simple install instructions and their website doesnt have anything either.

This unit replaced my JVC Arsenal 793 which recently died on me. I prefer the sound so far of the JVC as there was better bass response on it. However, the difference is negligible and I'm still adjusting all the settings. The Pioneer unit has an awesome ipod interface, getting to different albums/artists/songs/etc can all be done very quickly and is as close to the ease of actually using an ipod/iphone as I've seen. For example if you tap the album art it will bring up all songs for that album. HD radio is good, stations sound really crisp BT works well. My phone connects within 10 seconds automatically and the sound quality for calls is good. BT streaming works well too and sounds really good. Pandora controls are great but can be glitchy. Make sure your phone connects to the car via BT BEFORE you plug the phone in to the physical cable. The advanced app mode is cool in concept but it doesn't always work. When it does though it's pretty sweet. Having the maps display on your screen with full touchscreen control is nice. Overall it's a pretty nice HU and I'm not regretting the purchase. I'd recommend it. The flaws it has are tolerable and the good outweighs the bad.

Pros: Ipod controls Detachable face Image/screen quality

Cons: Advanced app mode Buggy software

The Pioneer 8400BH is the best unit I've been able to find for someone who does not keep a smartphone surgically attached to their body. The way I see it, a car head unit is an audio PLAYBACK device and the only additional component an audio PLAYBACK device should require is a music STORAGE device (i.e. flash drive, DVD-R/CD, HDD, SD card etc). I find it absurd for a music playback device to require another music playback device (i.e. smartphone, iPod, etc) in order to play music properly, and that's why the Pioneer 8400BH is so great: even without a smartphone the core features still work and work very well. Most manufacturers go out of their way to screw up this behavior, and the only real problem here is that things are sorted by their creation date instead of alphabetically. The tool DriveSort by Anerty's Lair fixes this so after editing your flash drive just run that utility and you'll be good. The UI is simple and intuitive without being spartan. Pioneer seems to understand that your eyes need to be focused elsewhere so they made it easy to do what you need to do. For example, to change your input source you press an arrow button on the upper left and a source listing pops open written in huge text. I have found a few places where things can be further streamlined but those are fairly minor.

Pros: 1. Aside from a lack of alphabetizing the contents, the device reads flash drives without the usual drama that lazy manufacturers create. 2. Multithreaded design: on startup the storage devices are initialized even if you are not using them. 3. Clean, simple, and intuitive UI 4. Has two rear USB ports and an SD card slot hidden behind the screen. 5. Contains a dedicated "mute" button. It's hard to believe, but some manufacturers actually omit this button from their head units.

Cons: 1. The media folder structure is sorted based upon the order the folders were created instead of alphabetical. 2. No built-in navigator. 3. Most settings are lost when the vehicle's battery is disconnected. 4. Parking Brake lock is too restrictive: I could not perform the initial setup of my phone due to this lock. 5. No playlist support 6. The date is shown in the backwards Day-Month format. There is no option to change this, and it drives me nuts!

The company that I purchased the system from, has replaced the radio three times and I am still have the frozen screen! The car voltage has been checked and reads normal, however, I am still having the same issue! Since I was informed that this was a new product for Pioneer, I would recommend that anyone thinking about purchasing this should wait until all kinks are removed!

Pros: Radio sounds great, when it works. There are a lot of great features.

Cons: The screen stops working at least 2-3 times a day. When this happens, you must pull off the road, turn the car off and the system appears to reset itself. If you reset with the use of a pen point, all of your tagged areas will be lost and you must reset everything again.

This unit is a great product and almost fully featured for everything you could want. Lots of add on options as well. Good price for what you get. Easy to use menus and options, fast user interface. It is geared more as an av receiver rather than navigation unit however the add on option is nice to have. Love the EQ settings. Haven't tried mixtraxx but looks cool, I don't like iphone so those features are not important to me. Really pleased with this unit!

Pros: Built in HD Radio works great, bluetooth with streaming audio, large 7 inch motorized detachable screen and many choices of sources as inputs and outputs. Dual usb ports. Cool feature called s.rtrv sound retriever which enhances compressed audio sources.

Cons: I would like to have seen better android support, particularly android Pandora control via bluetooth spp profile since the avic-z140bh has it. Also navigation is not built in and is $400 extra but not necessary. Id3 tags don't always display artwork on usb drive even though I have used several programs to make sure they is right.

This is my first aftermarket system and I have a mixed review. Ssystem sounds great just using the stock speakers in my 2006 Ford F150. My tech buddy installed for me while I watched, helped, and learned. The manual is a lot like instructions for doing your taxes..refer to such and such section for information..operation do do anything is never in one place. I still have not figured out how to use the apps features and plan to call Cruthfield to walk me through the process. The removable face is also a mixed bag. Love removing face to deter theft but the unit gets heated parked in the sun and faceplate then does not go back in smoothly. I got the top of the line of the Pioneer series to get all the bells and whistles but so far have been able to get some bells working and no whistles yet.

This radio blows away the factory unit in my Wrangler. I thought I had bad tweeters until I put this in. Now they sound crystal clear. I am having problems with the touchscreen locking up. I contacted Pioneer and their answer is it's the steering wheel control module. A google search shows this appears to be their canned response to the problem. I've disconnected the PAC SWI-PS and still have the problem. I can reset the unit or cut off my vehicle and turn it back on and the screen starts responding again. While it is locked up I can put the head unit in demo mode by holding down source. Once in demo mode I can touch the screen and it will make a beep while exiting demo mode. It will not respond to any touches once the radio turns back on though. Only in demo mode. I went a week with the PAC SWI-PS disconnected and the problem still exists. When I replied to Pioneer in depth of all of the steps I had taken they asked me to disconnect the unit (thanks...) or drive 40 miles to the repair facility. I did a Google search and I don't appear to be alone with this issue. YMMV.

Pros: Sounds great, love the iPhone connectivity, and all of the features.

Cons: The screen stop responding from time to time. It will start working again if you reset the device or turn your vehicle off and back on.

This is a wonderful product. the graphic equalizer that it has makes for some of the easiest tuning ive encountered. my stock speakers in my 2nd gen mazda 3 are hitting hard enough that i almost dont need a sub. i have been able to fine tune my sound better than any head unit i have had. as far as the appradio part goes, i love the interface. No problems connecting or getting it all going. the touch responsiveness is very precise and easy to catch on to. the only thing i have a problem with is that the manual and HU are a bit difficult to understand to find all the features. the manual makes you jump around a bunch but in the 48 hours its been installed i have figured it out on my own. all in all, great product, would recommend to anyone looking for this type of unit!

Pros: great interface, very responsiveness touchscreen, amazing resolution, easy install with crutchfield install gear.

Cons: a bit difficult to get the hang of, manual hard to follow.

I've had this in for a few weeks now and I have to say I like it way better than another brand I was looking at. The things I don't like about it is the CD track display is VERY small in the middle of the screen the colors aren't bad the one thing I haven't messed with is the background kind of cool. The EQ settings are a nice feature you can adjust to your liking or get the auto EQ mic and its will set it for you? Haven't got it yet. Over all I am happy with my purchase. One thing I did was shopped around for the best price and I have to say crutchfield had the best.

Pros: Good value not hard to use.

Cons: The CD track number is very small in the middle of the screen, Have a little feed back between tracks dont know if its a con though.

Previous reviewer is correct. With the top down on the Shelby, visibility is hindered. But that aside, this is a nice piece of equipment. So far, it's fast, does exactly what I wanted it to do, and sounds great with the other components that were installed. I put the BC20PA Advanced camera in as well. This is exactly what I needed for good clear rear view. Setting balance in a convertable is fast and easy, and quick to change between top up and top down. The 2 ipod ports are what made this selection for me. Keeping a normal ipod connected keeps my music there all the time, the advanced port for the iphone 4S is great for my GPS Drive app, and after the very easy Bluetooth pairing, I discovered (no, I didn't read the manual) it not only gives me hands free driving with the phone, but will also stream my music from there. Way cool. Perhaps someday I'll turn on the XM/Sirrus, but it'll be a while. What I haven't done, is watch a movie, so I can't attest to it's quality. But with 615HP, you don't much time sitting still. The only drawback as stated is the sunlight viewing, perhaps if the screen tilt could go "bottom in" slightly, that would help, but it would be that way with any large screen display. Volume and track controls are at your fingertips from an easy hand rest on the shifter. All in all, I'm glad I waited for this unit. We'll see how the long term is with it.

Pros: dual iPod ports, easy Bluetooth pairing, great with the crisp and clear BC20PA camera. Very easy balance adjustment for top up or top down driving.

Cons: As with every large screen display, direct sunlight does hinder visibility, but found it not to completely blind it.

Theres alot t.o love about the AVH P8400BH. Very cool, despite the occasional software glitch, I am glad I bought it. One important note though, I one a Jeep wrangler, and anyone with a convertible should be aware that the touch screen is iffy at best in direct sunlight. More often than not, I am stuck listening to whatever happens to be on when i decide its nice enough to take the top down. There is a physical source, skip track, and volume button, so your not stuck with the volume too low or too high. But it is an annoyance. Also, just FYI advanced app mode does not work with the Iphone 3GS. It is not advertised as doing so, but since it was not explictly ruled out I had hoped I could make it work. I really hope it is forward compatible with the Iphone 5!

    Pros: Very cool

Installed this radio in a 2006 Chevy HHR Crutchfield website said it would not fit, that is incorrect it fit very well only slight modification needed to the dash radio basket (well) in order to make room for the RCA wires. The GMOS_LAN-04 fits in center console easy. The user interface is very easy to use, straight forward and plenty fast. Background customizing is simple to do and adds your own touch. Made my factory Pioneer system come to life like never before! I would recommend this deck to an.y one that is looking for an excellent upgrade. 2006 Chevy HHR with on-star and factory Pioneer system with factory Pioneer subwoofer.

Pros: Can't beat the price, quality and features this deck has hands down. Easy to use and install works flawlessly as advertised in SEMA reviews.

Cons: Video definition could be better ,but is acceptable as it would bring the price up. No other cons found so far and probably wont find any.

This is my first Pioneer unit after 13 consequtive Kenwood Excelon Units. First of it is a BEAUTIFUL headunit. Ad for the most part the head unit is fast, super responsive, intuitive and incredibly capable. Even the sound quality is quite good for a head unit amplifier. I wish the sound cointouring were a but better but for a non SQ unit its not bad. The buttons are well layed out and the detachable screen is a nice touch. THe shining point here is the ipod.pandora control FIRST RATE!! The 4 in build quality is due to the HORRIBLE ipod cable. You charge me WAYYY TO MUCH for a cable that is WAYYYY TO HEAVY for the ipod/iphone receptacle THEN make me extend the usb stubby cable with a usb connector so loose i have to tape it together AND then shrink wrap 2 small sections and you call that a cable? HUGE dissapointment on that one. Anyway over all it is a great unit and i am happy with it. They seemed to learn a few lessons from the app radio 1 debacle but still have a few steps to take. One last thing i am kind of dissapointed then NO head units have the ability to see whats playing on my favorite channels simultaneously like the sirius app for smart phones.. that is a nice feature that i would pay handsomely for.

Pros: -BEAUTIFUL screen and unit -incredible iphone media/nav options -far better sound quality than i expected -stunning array of appearence options -fast and responsive save when exiting iphone

Cons: -INFURIATING USB CABLE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! -SIRIUS USERS BEWARE my 3 in ease of use comes from the fact that pionner HATES SIRIUS USERS. you only get one TINY line of text which a very ugly and misplaced lower cased 'i' in the middle of the screen make
