Portable XM2go technology is changing the way people enjoy XM Satellite Radio — and you can join in the fun with Pioneer's AirWare. Its built-in antenna gets reception wherever you go, as long as the signal's not completely blocked by things like buildings or trees. That means you can take it with you jogging, hiking, or wherever you go in the great outdoors. You'll also find a belt clip, a protective case, and a set of earphones in the package to round out the personal portable experience.

The AirWare also comes with the accessories you need to transfer it between your car and home stereos. Home and car cradles provide docks for the radio and let you make the necessary power and signal connections.

In the car, you can mount the AirWare in a convenient spot on your dash or center console with the included hardware. The easiest way to play XM over your car's FM stereo is to use the AirWare's wireless FM transmitter. It'll "broadcast" the signal over an unused FM frequency; just select one of 12 frequencies from the AirWare's menu. If your car stereo has an auxiliary input, you can also use an optional audio cable to connect the AirWare directly and get the best sound. A cassette adapter is also included.

At home, the included audio patch cable lets you plug the radio right into your stereo's input. The desktop cradle holds the AirWare in a convenient spot. A signal-strength meter helps you position the indoor/outdoor antenna in just the right spot for prime reception.

When you're listening to XM, with the press of a button you can store up to five hours of XM content, then play it back anytime you like — a single button lets you toggle between "Live" and "Memory" modes. This is great when you want to listen to XM content in an area where the satellite signal is blocked, like in the subway or the gym.

Whenever you hear songs or artists you like, save them in TuneSelect. It'll let you know anytime one of up to 20 of them is playing anywhere on XM. On top of that, the AirWare will also save the names and artists of up to 20 more songs (no alerts), so you'll remember them next time you hit the music store. To get to your favorite channels quickly, you can also store up to 30 of them as presets.

You'll like the view the 6-line display affords you. It shows you song, artist, and channel information, and gives you options for browsing through XM content. You can also set up scrolling InfoExtras, such as a customizable stock ticker or sports scores.

Features

Overview: The Pioneer AirWare XM2go receiver works as both a portable player and a plug-and-play receiver. This package includes everything you need for in-car, in-home, and on-the-go XM reception. The car kit includes a magnetic roof-mount antenna, a docking station (where all connections are made), three mounting brackets, a DC power adapter, and a cassette adapter. If your in-dash receiver has an auxiliary input, you can connect the AirWare's docking station directly to it with an optional minijack-to-RCA cable. For receivers that have neither a cassette player nor an auxiliary input, the AirWare features a built-in wireless FM transmitter. The home kit includes an indoor/outdoor antenna, a docking station (where all connections are made), an AC power adapter, and a minijack-to-RCA audio patch cable. The AirWare also features a built-in recording dock that can capture up to five hours of XM programming.

Note: In many areas, XM has a network of terrestrial or ground repeaters to help increase signal coverage. If you are not in range of a repeater, the antenna should have an unobstructed view of the XM satellites in the southern sky. If not, you will experience service interruption.

XM Satellite Radio: XM Satellite Radio programming offers more than 150 digital radio channels including channels of commercial free music, plus news, sports, talk, comedy, and other entertainment programming from coast to coast.

Backlit Display: While tuned to an XM channel, the LCD screen contains the following information: listening mode, channel selection mode, channel number, channel name, song or program title, artist name, clock, alarm indicator, battery level and charging status, signal strength indicator, and additional info (volume/playback bars, Stock Ticker, and Info Extras).

Dial: The dial can be used to scroll through channel or menu options. Pressing the dial allows you to select the current channel or menu option.

Direct Entry: Using the numeric buttons on the face of the receiver, you can directly access XM channels.

Direct Tune: This feature changes the functionality of the dial so that it automatically selects a channel each time it is rolled, without having to press the dial in.

Channel Presets: The receiver can store up to 30 preset channels. They are organized into three different groups, or memory banks: Preset A, Preset B, and Preset C. Each memory bank can store up to 10 channels.

Channel Preview: You can use the dial to preview the artists and songs currently playing on other channels without having to tune away from your current channel.

Artist Name and Song Title Memory: You can save the artist's name and song title on the current channel for future reference. Up to 20 different artist names/song titles can be saved at once, after which any new information that is saved will replace the oldest information in memory.

Tune Select: Using this function, you can program the receiver to alert you with a tone and display change when a favorite song is played again on a channel other than the one you are listening to.

Stock Ticker: This feature lets you track up to 20 of your favorite stocks and indices. You can track any stock symbol and most indices listed on the NYSE, NASDAQ, and AMEX. The stock market index information on the AirWare is approximately 25 minutes delayed.

Info Extras: XM Satellite Radio will broadcast information such as sports scores and other features from time to time. This feature allows you to view the current Info Extras offerings.

Audio Level: You can adjust the receiver's audio level output if it is too high, causing distortion, or too low for your vehicle.

Sleep Timer: You can set the sleep timer to shut off your AirWare automatically after a period of time. The sleep timer can be set to 15, 30, 45, or 60 minutes.

Alarm: The alarm turns on your AirWare at a certain time; you can choose to be alerted by a beep or by XM programming.

Delayed Power Off: You can set the tuner to automatically shut off 60, 90, 120, or 180 minutes after it is turned on.

2go: The AirWare features a built-in recording dock that can capture up to five hours of XM programming. You can store what's currently playing, or you can schedule up to two different recording sessions.

Using AirWare At Home: The package includes everything you need to connect the AirWare to your home audio system: an indoor/outdoor antenna, a docking station (where all connections are made), an AC power adapter, and a minijack-to-RCA audio patch cable.

Home Antenna: The home antenna gives you interior or exterior mounting options, and features a hinged base for flexible positioning. The antenna can be placed on any horizontal surface or mounted vertically to an interior or exterior wall.

Using AirWare In Your Vehicle: The package includes everything you need to connect the AirWare to your in-dash receiver: a magnetic roof-mount antenna, a docking station (where all connections are made), three mounting brackets, a DC power adapter, and a cassette adapter. If your in-dash receiver has an auxiliary input, you can connect the AirWare's docking station directly to it with an optional minijack-to-RCA cable. For receivers that have neither a cassette player nor an auxiliary input, the AirWare features a built-in wireless FM transmitter.

FM Frequency: AirWare's internal FM modulator can be used to send the audio to your radio on an unused FM station. You can choose from 12 different stations: 88.1, 88.3, 88.5, 88.7, 88.9, 106.7, 106.9, 107.1, 107.3, 107.5, 107.7, and 107.9 MHz.

Car Antenna: The car antenna has a powerful magnetic base that allows you to mount the antenna on the roof or trunk lid of your vehicle. The antenna needs to be positioned in such a way that it will be free of mechanical and line-of-sight obstructions.

Mounting Vehicle Docking Station: The vehicle docking station can be mounted in one of three different ways in your vehicle:

  • Flush Mount: Using the supplied self-adhesive pad, the vehicle docking station can be mounted onto any flat surface in your vehicle.
    • Note: Do not install the mount on a leather surface. Doing so could permanently damage the surface.
  • Vent Mount: Using the supplied vent mount, you can attach the AirWare and vehicle docking station to any horizontal air vent that can support their combined weight.
  • Swivel Mount: The swivel mount can be attached to any flat surface using the supplied self-adhesive pad.
    • Note: Do not install the mount on a leather surface. Doing so could permanently damage the surface.

Using AirWare On The Go: The AirWare contains a built-in antenna that works best when the AirWare receiver is upright. Use the belt clip to hold the AirWare in the proper position; laying the AirWare down flat may weaken reception.

Note: In many areas, XM has a network of terrestrial or ground repeaters to help increase signal coverage. If you are not in range of a repeater, the antenna should have an unobstructed view of the XM satellites in the southern sky. If not, you will experience service interruption.

Belt Clip/Stand: The belt clip doubles as a table stand. The clip simply pulls out and locks into place, providing the "leg" section of the stand.

Rechargeable Battery: The rechargeable battery provides up to 5 hours of playback.

An excellent, versatile sat radio

Written By Bernie, Denver, Colorado on Sunday, March 19, 2006

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Pioneer Airware was my introduction into satellite radio and I couldn't be more pleased. This radio does it all. In the house I get superb reception with the antenna and the sound quality through my stereo system is excellent. In my truck, with the antenna installed, the reception is always strong and clear. I have had no problems using FM modulation to listen through the vehicle sound system. Since my dashboard doesn't have one flat place where I could mount one of the supplied brackets, I installed a bracket (from Crutchfield) specific for my truck model that places the Airware right where I want it with no interference with the truck's radio and climate controls nor with my brake controller unit below the mounting bracket.

I agree with a previous reviewer that the on/off button and the wheel are a bit small. I find the on/off button only works the first time if I press it with a finger nail. It's just a little too deeply recessed for me. But this is my only criticism of this radio. The other controls are well laid out and easy to use. The buttons are all backlit for easy viewing in reduced light conditions. Documentation with the Airware is excellent.

The Pioneer Airware has exceeded all my expectations. I highly recommmend it to anyone who wants a portable satellite radio that they can use at home, in their vehicle, and walking.

Suprisingly good reception, even without a south-facing window!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

A bit anxious at first, as I could not obtain a strong signal with the antenna facing out my north window (only window in my 2nd floor home office), however a simple 180° rotation of the antenna on my desktop solved the problem. Now I have 3 bars, which is more than enough to either listen live or record the high quality digital sound. On the whole I found this product very easy to set-up and use, with the controls being highly intuitive. Now I can listen to XM73 (Frank's Place with Jonathan Schwartz) all day and all night, including while I work out at the gym. Only minor complaint is that the earbuds get uncomfortable after awhile, but I solved that problem with an inexpensive pair of stereo headphones. Hooray for portable XM radio, and three cheers to Pioneer for making a great product!

My new friend!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am new to XM. I researched porties since they came out. This Pioneer seemed to have the best options. Let me say it is awesome! I barely looked at the directions because it is user friendly.
The only cons I can think of is, like the other users say, you can't fast-forward or see what is playing on other channels like online and the thumb wheel can indeed be a little bigger.
These cons are petty because this portie rocks!
I really hope Pioneer makes some more "pioneering" accessories to stay ahead of the rest!

Best XM Yet!

Written By michaeltee, SF Bay Area on Friday, December 09, 2005

As a long time XM listener I've been wanting a portie for quite some time. I came very close to buying the original Delphi MyFi when it came out last year but looking back, I'm glad I held out for the Pioneer. Not only is it a great performer (not to mention better looking), but with the rebate the price has dropped by nearly 50% in recent months. That said, other XM models are seemingly less expensive but by the time you purchase the necessary accessories, the price difference isn't a factor. Why? Because the AirWave includes everything you need for home, mobile and portable listening. There is literally nothing else to buy.

True, when using the radio as a standalone portie there are those times (an area with many trees or tall buildings for example) when the reception might not be perfect but in the open (such as the beach, the playground, the average back yard, residential neighborhood, etc.) no worries. As long as you have a fairly clear view of the Southern sky you're good to go! For areas with poor reception, simply pre-record up to 5 hours of programming using the unit's built-in memory and you'll never be without something to listen to.

For music lovers who aren't familiar with XM's programming, you're in for a treat. There are so many genres and sub-genres of commercial-free music, the choices are virtually endless. XM is also big on live concerts, sports, news, talk, and many other forms of entertainment. In short, XM puts standard FM broadcast radio to shame!

Giving the Pioneer AirWave (and XM Radio in general) 5 STARS is definitely a no-brainer!

Pioneer AirWare

GREAT PRODUCT !
Way more than my expectations. Light years ahead of my original model SkyFi. I love the built in FM transmitter (although it is built into the unit itself NOT in the vehicle power supply as stated in the Crutchfield review). 5 hour battery life is true. I don't even use the in car power cord as 5 hours is more than enough play time for me in the car. By using the FM transmitter it means I only need to have one cord running to the vehicle docking station.
I use in my home as well. Great to be able to have it located on a table near a window to allow antenna placement and yet listen to it accross the room on my home tuner using the FM transmitter.
I love the 'time-shift' recording mode. I have the built in scheduler set to record 2 hours of fresh programming every night. I use the recorded content whenever i enter an area with signal drop out from the satellite. I have to comment that this signal loss is not a fault of this unit but a fact of life in satellite radio. XM has however added 'terrestrial' repeaters that cover almost all of my normal travel areas.
The only minor complaint I have is the thumb wheel on the side should be larger. Overall I am VERY impressed with this sleek, good looking product. Best looking xm2go radio on the market. I did not like the inconvient, wierd button arrangement on the other available models.

Nice looking, minus some features

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a great looking receiver. The best looking XM2go in my opinion. Like the other reviewers everything is great. One thing I did not know before hand though and I wish they would do something about it, is you cannot FAST FORWARD. You can skip tracks if the title of the song changes. But if you're listening to a recorded talk show, where the title stays the same, you have no option but to listen to the entire thing. Poor planning in my book.
