Our take on the Pioneer AVH-P5700DVD

Pioneer's AVH-P5700DVD DVD player lets you break into mobile video without breaking your budget. It makes a fantastic foundation for your video system and a great overall in-dash stereo.

You'll love the convenience of touchscreen controls offered by the motorized, retractable 6.5" monitor — and your passengers will definitely love the flash it adds to your dash. The 'P5700DVD will play your DVDs (you can watch them only when parked), your CDs, and the discs you've loaded with MP3s and WMAs.

Of course, none of that would matter if it didn't sound great, right? Fortunately, Pioneer packed in a brawny MOSFET internal amp, a 24-bit digital-to-analog converter, and a 3-band parametric EQ — your music and movies will sound larger than life, perfectly tailored to match your vehicle's acoustics. EQ-EX gives the EQ curve you've selected a boost, especially helpful when you're switching between sources.

And you won't lack entertainment options with the AVH-P5700DVD. The audio/video input lets you connect another source, like a video game console. A video output lets you add an extra monitor so more people can join in on the fun. Have an iPod®? The AVH-P5700DVD works with Pioneer's iPod adapter; you get a convenient, single-cable connection, and touchscreen control of your iPod's functions. The adapter will even charge your iPod's battery.

If satellite radio is your thing, you've got options, too. The AVH-P5700DVD will connect to a compatible XM or SIRIUS satellite radio (antenna and subscription also required). You'll have over 120 channels of music, news, sports, entertainment, and more — right at your fingertips, from coast to coast. And the built-in Supertuner IIID still offers some of the best AM/FM reception around.

Craving more power? Three sets of preamp outputs let you connect external amplifiers for a rolling mobile theater that's second to none.

Features

Motorized 6.5" TFT LCD Touch-screen Color Display: The AVH-P5700DVD features a motorized 6.5" TFT Active Matrix, 16:9 wide screen touch-screen display with an adjustable viewing angle. The resolution of the display is 1440 x 234 for a total of 336,960 pixels. The screen has an anti-glare, low reflection coating for better visibility. The touch panel allows you to control this unit or a connected component such as a CD or DVD changer, or TV tuner. Menus appear on screen for making function choices, audio adjustments, and setting up the system.

Display Angle and Position Adjustment: You can adjust the display's angle and position for better visibility. The display slides forward and backward, allowing you to choose one of 2 slide positions. You can also choose one of 25 tilt angles.

Auto Open/Close: When this feature is active, the display automatically opens when the ignition switch is turned on and closes when the ignition switch is turned off.

Video Adjustments: You can store numerous video settings for each source, including brightness, contrast, color and hue.

Flip Down Mode: When an upright LCD panel hinders the operation of the air conditioner or dash controls, you can temporarily fold the panel down. After a few seconds in the folded down position, the panel returns to its original position after a couple of warning beeps.

Detachable Control Panel: To prevent theft, the control panel (the bottom half of the front panel) can be detached from the unit.

Note: There is no case for the detachable control panel supplied with this unit.

MOSFET50 Internal Amplifier: This receiver is equipped with a 50 watts x 4 (peak) MOSFET amplifier for low distortion, high power output. The amplifier is strong enough to power small subwoofers to moderate volume levels in compact cars and pickups. For higher volume levels from subwoofers, an optional amplifier may be connected to the preamp outputs.

iPod Adapter Ready: Pioneer's CD-IB100ii iPod adapter (item # 130IB100ii) permits direct control and playback of iPod through the touch-panel. The AVH-P5700DVD can be connected with an iPod via this dedicated adapter, and using the touch panel, you can play iPod-recorded songs, scroll through the music library on your iPod, or select from several functions like Shuffle and Repeat playback.

Satellite Radio Tuner Compatible: This unit can control an optional Pioneer XM or SIRIUS tuner (sold separately).

TV Tuner Compatible: With an optional Pioneer TV tuner (sold separately), you can watch over-the-air broadcasts on this unit.

DSP Controls: The AVH-P5700DVD has controls for an optional multi-channel digital signal processor (such as the DEQ-P8000). With a connected DSP unit, you can apply seat position, time alignment adjustments, sound field controls, speaker output level adjustments with a test tone, and set cutoff frequencies.

Easy EQ Curves: This model has "SUPER BASS", "POWERFUL", "NATURAL", "VOCAL", "CUSTOM", and "FLAT" preset EQ curves. The "CUSTOM" curve is one that you create and store in memory. A separate "CUSTOM" curve can be created and stored in memory for each source.

EQ-EX: This feature allows you to boost the current EQ setting for even more powerful sound.

3-Band Parametric Equalizer: This unit includes a 3-band parametric EQ with Selectable Q Factor. You may select a low (40, 80, 100 or 160Hz), mid (200, 500, 1k or 2kHz) and high frequency (3.15k, 8k, 10k or 12.5kHz) to boost or cut within a range of -6dB to +6dB. The Q factor (slope of the boost or cut) may be selected from one of the following four options: 2N (narrow), 1N, 1W and 2W (wide). Selecting a narrow (steep) Q factor results in frequencies around the center frequency to be affected less by the boost or cut than they are with a wide Q factor. This feature is useful for taming frequency response problems caused by the dimensions, materials and speaker locations of a vehicle.

Selectable Bass and Treble Cut-off Frequencies: The cut-off frequencies for the bass and treble controls can be set independently of the 3-band parametric equalizer adjustments. The bass cut-off frequency can be set to 40Hz, 63Hz, 100Hz or 160Hz. The treble cut-off frequency can be set to 2.5kHz, 4kHz, 6.3kHz or 10kHz. The bass and treble controls have an adjustment range of -6 to +6.

Adjustable Loudness: You can select "Low", "Mid" or "High" for different levels of loudness compensation.

Source Level Adjustment (SLA): This function lets you adjust the volume level of each source to prevent radical changes in volume when switching between sources. Settings are based on the volume level of the FM tuner, which remains unchanged. Each source can be independently adjusted from -4 dB to +4 dB.

High-pass Filter: When you don't want sound in the subwoofer frequency range output from the front and rear speakers, you may activate the built-in high-pass filter. You may select a filter frequency of 50Hz, 80Hz, or 125Hz.

Subwoofer/Non-fading Preouts: In addition to the front and rear preamp outputs, there is one set of outputs that may be set for "subwoofer" or "non-fading" output. When set to "non-fading", the signal is full range and the output level is user selectable from -6 to +6. When set to "subwoofer", the outputs are non-fading, and they may be set for normal or reverse phase, 50Hz/80Hz/125Hz low-pass output, and the level is user selectable from -6 to +6.

Rear Channel Output: You can choose to use the rear channel output (speaker and preout) for full-range speaker or subwoofer. If you select "subwoofer", you can connect a 4-ohm subwoofer directly to each rear speaker lead without using an external amplifier.

Supertuner IIID AM/FM Tuner: The Supertuner IIID features Feed Forward Control, which avoids multi-path interference. This pre-detection of interference enables quick filter control and results in less distortion. In addition, the Supertuner IIID creates enhanced stereo during multi-path interference, unlike conventional tuners that collapse to mono. Digital processing reduces distortion, and improves Signal-to-Noise Ratio and stereo separation. Advanced analog technology improves signal processing sensitivity.

MP3/WMA Playback: This unit can play MP3/WMA files recorded on CD-ROM, CD-R, and CD-RW discs in ISO9660 Level 1/Level 2, Joliet, and Romeo formats. MP3 files with a bit rate from 8-320 kbps and WMA files with a bit rate from 48-192 kbps are supported.

CD-R/CD-RW Skip Function: Some CD-R/W recorders allow you to assign skip ID tags to tracks that you never want to hear. When a track has been assigned a track skip ID, compatible units will recognize the skip ID information and skip over that track. This player recognizes track skip IDs, so CD-R and CD-RW discs with skip ID information will be played back as intended.

Disc Title Memory: Titles of up to 10 characters each can be entered into memory for up to 48 discs. When a compatible changer is connected, titles of up to 10 characters each can be entered into memory for up to 100 discs in the changer.

Optional Aux Input: When used with item 130CDRB10 (sold separately) or item 130CDRB20 (sold separately), this unit can accept input from an auxiliary source, such as a portable CD or MD player. When item 130CDRB10 is used, a CD changer cannot be connected to this unit. Item 130CDRB20 allows you to connect an optional Pioneer CD changer and an auxiliary source to this unit.

Dimmer: You can select the brightness level from three settings: daytime, evening, and nighttime viewing. After setting the brightness level, the unit uses an ambient light sensor, located on the top of the monitor frame, to automatically adjust the brightness to an optimum level within the setting range you've selected.

Display Illumination/Clock Display: When the Clock Display has been turned on, pressing and holding the source button turns off audio output, but the clock display and screen illumination remain on. When the Clock Display has not been turned on, pressing and holding the source button turns off audio output, but the screen illumination remains on. In each case, the button illumination turns off. If the Illumination Switch option is set to on in the Initial Settings menu, the button illumination will remain on when the unit is shut down.

Warning Tone: If the front panel is not detached from the head unit within 5 seconds of turning off the ignition, a warning tone will sound. This feature can be turned On or Off.

Optical Digital Output: The optical digital output (proprietary connection) on the rear of the head unit allows you to connect an optional Pioneer digital audio processor.

Rear View Camera: The head unit features a function that automatically switches to the rear camera image (Rear View Camera In jack) when a rear camera is installed on your vehicle. When the shift lever is in the reverse position, the screen automatically switches to the rear view camera. You can also see the image of the rear view camera during normal driving.

DVD/Video CD Features

Multi-Angle Display: This function allows you to choose the viewing angle of scenes that were shot from a number of different angles.

Note: This function is limited to DVDs recorded with multiple camera angles.

Widescreen Modes: You can choose from the following widescreen modes:

  • Full: a 4:3 picture is enlarged in the horizontal direction only, enabling you to enjoy a 4:3 picture without any omissions
  • Just: the picture is enlarged slightly at the center and the amount of enlargement increases horizontally toward the ends of the picture
  • Zoom: a 4:3 picture is enlarged in the same proportion both vertically and horizontally; ideal for a 16:9 screen
  • Cinema: a picture is enlarged by the same proportion as Full or Zoom in the horizontal direction and by an intermediate proportion between Full and Zoom in the vertical direction
  • Normal: a 4:3 picture is displayed as it is

Scan Search: When playing a DVD or Video CD, there is one fast-play speed in both directions.

Slow Motion: When playing a DVD or Video CD, there are four slow motion speeds in both directions (1/16, 1/8, 1/4, and 1/2).

Repeat Play: When playing a DVD, you can repeat the current chapter or title. When playing a Video CD, you can repeat the current track or the entire disc.

Bookmark: The Bookmark function lets you resume playback from a selected scene the next time the disc is loaded.

Changer Controls

ITS (Instant Track Selection) Programming: The ITS function can be used to program automatic playback of up to 99 tracks per disc for up to 100 discs. With changers sold before the CDX-P1250 and CDX-P650, up to 24 tracks can be stored in the playlist.

Disc Title Memory: Titles of up to 10 characters each can be entered into memory for up to 100 discs.

Disc Title List: This feature allows you to display disc titles that you have entered. From the list, you can select a disc for playback.

CD Text Display: When used with a CD Text compatible Pioneer CD changer, this unit will display the titles of CD Text encoded discs that are played in the changer. When playing a CD Text disc on a CD Text compatible changer, you cannot switch to the Disc Title Input mode. CD Text disc titles, artist names and track titles longer than 19 characters may be scrolled to reveal the entire string of text.

CD Sound Quality Adjustment: Using the "COMP" (compression) and "DBE" (dynamic bass emphasis) functions, you can adjust the playback quality of the changer. Each function may be set to one of two levels or off. The "COMP" function compresses the audio signal to eliminate distortions caused by the imbalances between the loudest and softest sounds when played at high volumes. The "DBE" function boosts bass frequencies to give your music a more full sound.

Note: For these functions to work, they must be supported by the Pioneer CD changer.

DVD Operation: This unit can control an optional Pioneer DVD player or DVD changer.

Pioneer AVH-P5700DVD

Written By Kara, Elkton, MD on Thursday, March 15, 2007

I actually bought this player at circuit city for a much higher price. This is a all around good player and i'm happy with it. Theres a few things i dont like about this player is that there is no remote, so when i'm using the touch screen im on the other side of the road without realizing it. And while its playing just music its just a plain blue screen, no graphics whatso ever.

This is a great deck. I would advise anyone looking in this price range to consider this deck. Crutchfield's price is on the high side, but with all the extras they give you(wiring harness, din adapter, ect.)I thought it was worth it. This is one of the best sounding decks I have ever heard, and so far been very reliable. It should come with a remote for the price, but it doesn't.
I had to purchase the remote. The remote is worth getting.

Good Deal

Written By Robert, Indio, Ca on Monday, July 24, 2006

I was pondering between the Alpine IVA-W200 and the Pioneer AVH-P5700DVD for sometime. Played with the Alpine IVA-W200 for sometime and wasn't feeling it. I also didn't want it to be fully exposed for anyone to see that I had it so I wouldn't be a target for theft. So I went with the Pioneer AVH-P5700DVD being that it goes in and not as noticable. Some downsides is that it does not have a display when in, 2, it has only one screen saver that is not the most eye catching and 3 is that it does not come with a remote. But all in all for what i got it for it was worth it. It offers a lot of different functions.

I've had it for a while now. I like it alot, because of all the features. Once I went Pioneer, I knew I'll never switch.... One thing though, it can't play SVCD. Not a big deal. It can be worked around. Other than that, it works great!

Pioneer AVH-P5700DVD

Written By Shaun, Texas on Thursday, March 23, 2006

I swapped the Pioneer unit for my previous Jensen 7" in-dash monitor. With a $900+ plus purchase, I was expecting to receive a reliable unit with some good visuals and performance. Why the visuals? Because you can't legally operate front seat DVD players with video on the screen, so while driving, its nice to see some cool screen savers/backgrounds to add some style to your dash.

THE BAD:

If youre a visual person like me, youre in for a quick dissapointment. The 6.5" screen is kind of small, but not too bad. All you get is a blue screen with text to display what source youre playing. The screen is very dull, although it is responsive. You can purchase several attachments including the iPod adapter, Navigation, Vehicle Dynamics, etc. but this will put you into the high $1500s so its best to pay for a better unit in the first place. After all, it is a 6.5" screen. I assume you would want to SEE something on the screen if youre moving up to this class of receivers anyway.

Also, the unit does NOT come with a remote. You have to order it seperatly and pay an extra $25. Pioneer.com does not carry the remote on their website. You have to find a local dealer, if they even carry it.

THE GOOD:

Outside of the poor visuals, the unit operates perfectly. I had no problems with it and it plays DVD/CD/MP3/WMA perfectly. It loads CDs quickly and the sound it produces is quite amazing. I was able to customize the sound I wanted from my speakers/subs perfectly. The unit doesnt have many bells and whistles, but basic operation is one of the best.

Overall, the unit is a good buy but certainly not worth $900 in my eyes.

OMG!!!

OK where to start, well the 3 band equalizer is great i thought it wouldnt be any good after using a 9 band on my panasonic but wow i was wrong. The picture is clean. the bass it puts to my L7 15 is great, sounds perfect. It hasent skipped once since iv had it even in my severly lowered car over bumps. The 1 thing that would make it better would be a knob for the volume but the push buttons are still nice it turns up quikly(if u got some bang then you know y that is a must)So if u are trying to find a nice moniter without sacaraficing good audio quality i would tell you to pick this item up

i bought this system from seeing it in my friends truck. what an easy install! only 2 complaints. on other pioneer cd players there are alot of screen savers or graphics if you will. this only has one and its very plain. and it doesnt have an external display like volume or what track # you are on. other than that this unit is awesome!

Lowest priced unit in class with tons of features.

Written By joeysocal, San Diego, CA on Tuesday, July 05, 2005

The front buttons are rather small due to small realistate on front panel. At $900, it should have came with a remote. The color of the buttons in the center are my biggest complaint. I like a system to look somewhat factory, but the center buttons are purple rather than blue as stated in the specs.
