Our take on the Pioneer AVIC-Z140BH

by Ken Nail
Pioneer

Why install a car stereo with built-in GPS?

Imagine taking a trip as your car's receiver gives you directions, finds the best restaurant for dinner, and plays movies for your back seat denizens. Navigation receivers cover all the bases, with GPS guidance, DVD playback, and a host of other useful features. You can search through millions of points of interest to locate gas stations, restaurants, museums, and other interesting spots, wherever you are. Most receivers offer Bluetooth capability for hands-free calling, along with the ability to search through your iPod playlists with touchscreen controls.

Flagship performance

Pioneer's AVIC-Z140BH — their flagship navigation receiver for 2012 — puts it all together — outstanding navigation capabilities, serious app compatibility with many mobile devices, and comprehensive A/V capabilities. And you'll control all of this from a sharp 7" touchscreen that'll really make a statement in your dash.

Wide-ranging navigation and traffic capabilities

The AVIC-Z140BH guides you with detailed Tele Atlas® maps of Canada, Puerto Rico, and the entire U.S.A. — maps that feature over 12 million points of interest to guide you to the services you want when you're on the road. And the included TMC traffic tuner offers quick access to fast, free traffic information in over 90 major metropolitan areas — info that helps you avoid tie-ups well before you get caught in a jam.

Pioneer's Lane Guidance feature helps eliminate the pain of getting caught in the wrong lane at a busy interchange by directing you to the correct lane for upcoming turns. And Pioneer's AVIC FEEDS add a whole new level of fun and functionality, giving you the ability to transfer destinations from Google Maps, download points-of-interest from the Internet, and more.

App compatibility with your phone

This versatile Pioneer offers a high degree of compatibility with apps and mobile devices. With the free Aha Radio app, you can use your iPhone® or Android to tap into a wide variety of personalized, on-demand content while you're behind the wheel. Aha Radio provides audio streams of information like status updates and Tweets, so you can catch social media updates from Facebook and Twitter while you drive. Best of all, you never have to take your eyes off the road to check out your iPhone's screen.

Aha Radio's features extend beyond updates, and lets you search reviews of restaurants and coffee shops listed on Yelp with Aha Radio's "Hungry" and "Coffee" stations. Aha Radio also filters, sorts, and prioritizes the content you get based on your location, so you can even tap into traffic info for first-hand reports of road conditions in your vicinity. And Aha Radio has news updates, podcasts, and even comedy — so there's always something to listen to.

Pandora® Internet radio control

You can connect your iPhone with Pioneer's CD-IU51V cable, or pair your Android through Bluetooth and enjoy control of your Pandora® stations from the receiver's touchscreen, including "thumbs up" and "thumbs down" song ratings. And you'll see album art, plus song and artist info on the big screen as well.

Advanced App Mode

Once you plug in your iPhone with Pioneer's iPod cable, you'll also be able to watch YouTube, Netflix, and other online video content when you're parked, or send it to backseat monitors while you're driving. Thanks to dual-zone A/V control, you can even listen to music from another source while the crew in the back enjoys video.

Hands-free phoning with voice control

The AVIC-Z140BH's built-in Bluetooth lets you make hands-free calls easily with your compatible phone, and keep your attention on the road. The built-in Bluetooth also supports audio music streaming (A2DP) so you can stream music wirelessly from compatible mobile devices to the receiver.

Plenty of audio/video options

You'll have plenty to listen to when you take a trip. This receiver plays music from CDs, plus CDs and DVDs loaded with music files. And listening to your iPod® or iPhone is as easy as plugging in to the rear USB port — you'll take control of your music from the receiver's touchscreen. If you need more audio options, check out the SD card slot and the rear A/V inputs. Again, you can play video content from DVDs on the main screen when you're parked, or send the video output to rear-seat screens when you're traveling.

Want to keep your car's steering wheel audio controls?
In most vehicles, you can use an adapter (not included) to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this Pioneer stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and the Pioneer, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls.

Bluetooth note: Use of this receiver's Bluetooth features will depend upon your phone's Bluetooth capabilities. Learn more in our article explaining Bluetooth profiles.

Note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check Hands-on Research for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver or its optional iPod adapter.

    Touchscreen Display

7" TFT LCD Touchscreen Color Display: The Pioneer AVIC-Z140BH features a 7" TFT Active Matrix, 16:9 widescreen touchscreen display. The resolution of the display is 800 x 480, for a total of 384,000 pixels. The touchscreen display allows you to control this unit and a paired Bluetooth device, or a connected component such as an iPod/iPhone, Satellite radio receiver, or USB Flash memory. Menus appear on screen for making function choices, audio adjustments, and setting up the system.

Motorized Display: The unit's touchscreen display is motorized. The 7" touchscreen display electronically slides down to load and eject your DVD/CD discs. The angle of the motorized touchscreen display can also be adjusted to five different positions (0-22°) to meet your viewing needs in the car.

Start Up Time: The Pioneer AVIC-Z140BH has a start up time of approximately 18.1 seconds from Off to the "Caution" screen. Once the "Caution" screen appears, you can tap the "OK" button on the head unit's touchscreen to go instantly to the Navigation screen or press the "Mode" hard-key to access the Source menu.

10-Bit Video DAC: The Pioneer AVIC-Z140BH utilizes a 10-bit video DAC for excellent video playback of your movies/TV shows stored on disc, flash memory, or your iPod/iPhone.

Multilingual Display: The Pioneer AVIC-Z140BH offers English, French, and Spanish text.

Video Adjustments: You can store numerous video settings for each source and the optional rear view camera; including brightness (adjusts the black intensity), contrast (adjusts contrast) color (adjusts color saturation), temperature (adjust the color temperature), and Dimmer (adjusts brightness).

Widescreen Modes: You can choose from the following widescreen modes when playing back video:

    • Full: A 4:3 picture is enlarged in the horizontal direction only, enabling you to enjoy a 4:3 picture without any omissions.
    • Just: The picture is enlarged slightly at the center and the amount of enlargement increases horizontally toward the ends of the picture.
    • Zoom: A 4:3 picture is enlarged in the same proportion both vertically and horizontally; ideal for a 16:9 screen.
    • Cinema: A picture is enlarged by the same proportion as Full or Zoom in the horizontal direction and by an intermediate proportion between Full and Zoom in the vertical direction.
    • Normal: A 4:3 picture is displayed as it is.

Splash Screen: You can change the splash screen of the head unit to one of six pre-installed images (Black, Curves Light Blue, IC Gold, Ripple Blue, or Spotlight Green). You can also change the splash screen to custom images stored on an inserted SD memory card. These custom images must be JPEG or BMP files (2592 x 1944 or smaller).

Shortcut Menu: You can register your favorite menu items in the head unit's Shortcut Menu so you can quickly jump to your favorite menu items. Up to 15 menu items can be registered.

Front-Panel Controls With Adjustable Illumination: In addition to the touchscreen controls, the unit includes frequently used buttons along the bottom edge of the screen. The color of the button illumination can be set to white, green, blue, purple, yellow, orange, red or scan (constantly cycling through the color spectrum). You can also create a custom color using the unit's three primary colors (red, green, blue) and a 0 to 31 color-level adjustment.

Anti-Theft Security: You can set a password for the Pioneer AVIC-Z140BH to deter theft. If the back-up lead is cut after the password is set, the navigation system prompts for the password at the time of next boot up.

Dimmer: To prevent the display from being too bright at night, the display is automatically dimmed when the car's headlights are turned on. You can turn the dimmer on or off. The automatic dimmer function only works when the orange/white illumination wire in the wiring harness is connected to the vehicle's headlight circuit.

Parking Brake Interlock: This unit has a parking brake interlock system that prohibits viewing of video programming and operating certain controls when the vehicle is in motion. In order to watch video on the in-dash monitor, the vehicle must be parked with the parking brake engaged. Many of the head unit's menu functions will also be disabled; such as Navigation, System, Map, and Bluetooth settings. The head unit's light green wire must be connected to your vehicle's parking brake detection circuit.

Note: The head unit's touchscreen will display "Attention! Viewing of front seat video source while driving is strictly prohibited", if you try to watch a video when your vehicle is in motion.

2-DIN Chassis: The Pioneer AVIC-Z140BH has a 2-DIN chassis (also known as "Double DIN" or size DD), and will fit in many vehicles with a large dash opening. The unit can be ISO-mounted using factory brackets. There is also an optional double-DIN sleeve (130ADTV133, sold separately) available for this unit that will allow you to Euro-mount or custom mount the Pioneer head unit in your vehicle. As always, please consult Crutchfield's Outfit My Car to verify fit with your vehicle.

    Onboard Navigation

Built-in Navigation (from NAVTEQ): The Pioneer AVIC-Z140BH offers a comprehensive map database from NAVTEQ stored on its built-in 4GB flash-memory. The pre-loaded map database covers the entire United States (including Alaska & Hawaii), Canada, and Puerto Rico enabling users to route to millions of destinations including more than 12 million points of interest (POIs).

Note: Car navigation maps are frequently updated. While this database was judged to be as accurate as possible at the time of its release, a map database can never be 100% accurate. Road information that is maintained in the map databases, such as turn restrictions or road names may change over time.

Map Updates: Map updates via a SD memory card can be purchased at Pioneer's online store. Pioneer will release one update per year.

GPS Technology: The AVIC-Z140BH accurately measures your current location by the Global Positioning System, a network of satellites orbiting the earth to give you time and position information. The accuracy of the GPS information depends upon how good the reception is. The unit has a 32-channel GPS receiver with a magnetic antenna included. The AVIC-Z140BH also features a speed sensing cable for better accuracy of your vehicle's movement.

Note: The car speed signal cable (Pink) should always be connected to your vehicle's speed detection circuit. Failure to make this connection will increase errors in the vehicle's location display.

On-Screen Map: As you travel, the AVIC-Z140BH guides you to your destination with voice prompts, arrows on the map, and directions at the top of the map. At the bottom of the screen is your current street, while the top of the screen shows your next street; the upper-left corner indicates the distance to your next maneuver. A magnified view of the map can be displayed when approaching your next turn. If you depart from the original route, the navigation system recalculates the route and provides new directions. Your route is marked with a green line, while your vehicle is marked by a red arrow on the screen, and checkered flag marks your destination. You can adjust the following map settings.

    • View Modes: Various types of screen displays can be select for navigation guidance; 2D View (displays a normal two-dimensional map with North or your direction at the top of map screen), 3D View (displays three-dimensional map with your direction at the top of the map screen), Street View (information on the next 4 guidance points closest to your current location appear in order from top to bottom on the left side of the map screen), Rear View (displays the rear view image on the left side of the map screen), or Eco Graph (displays a graph for eco-driving on the left side of the map screen).
    • Day/Night Modes: You can also select between brightness modes; Day (for a bright background), Night (for a black background) or Auto (to automatically switch between the two).

Voice Guidance/Text to Speech: In addition to graphical on-screen directions and maps, the AVIC-Z140BH provides voice guidance and turn-by-turn directions. You can choose a male or female voice in English, French, or Spanish. Some of the voices are capable of text-to-speech, announcing the street names along with the turn directions.

Lane Guidance: In certain locations of a freeway, lane information is available, indicating the recommended lane to be in to easily maneuver the next instruction. While driving on the freeway, freeway exit numbers and freeway signs may be displayed in the vicinity of interchanges and exits.

Destination Search: The Destination Search menu provides several different categories for you to use when searching for addresses, cities, and other locations. The detailed map loaded in the navigation system also contains millions of points of interest to choose from.

    Destination Search Description
Browse Map Allows you to search for a destination by touching and dragging the map.
Return Home Store one home location to allow you to calculate a route home from any current location.
Address Input your destination address by house number, street, and city.
Points-of-Interest Allows you to search for over 12-millions points of interest by specific Name or Category (Accommodation, Automotive, Business/Community, Entertainment/Finance, Medical, Restaurant, Shopping, Sports, or Transportation). POI searches can calculated for places near your current location, near your destination, or around a certain city.
City History You can search the cities (up to 50) from the history of your recent searches.
Recent The places that you have set as destinations or waypoints in the past are automatically stored. Up to 100 locations can be saved and searched for later.
Favorites You can save all of your favorite places (up to 400 locations) in the navigation system, so you can quickly navigate to them later.
Coordinates Allows you to search your destination by longitude and latitude values.
AVIC Feeds Search customized POIs created from AVIC feeds software.

Note: Your vehicle must be stopped and the parking brake will need to be engaged to enable certain navigation functions; such as Address search, Return Home, AVIC Feeds, and Coordinates.

Total Traffic Network Tuner: The Pioneer AVIC-Z140BH comes with an external Total Network Traffic tuner module. Partnering with Clear Channel Broadcasting Inc, the included Total Network Traffic tuner provides real-time traffic data for over 90 major cities in North America, including Canada. When the AVIC-Z140BH receives updated traffic information, the navigation system will overlay the traffic information on the on-screen map and also display detailed text information when available. When you are traveling along a route and there is traffic information on your current route, the system will detect it and ask you if you would like to be re-routed, or suggest another route automatically.

Route Calculation: The AVIC-Z140BH calculates the route based on your preferences. You can have the navigation system calculate your route based on the following selections.

    • Route Method: You can choose from 2 different route methods (Fastest Time or Shortest Distance)
    • Road Types: To let the route fit your needs, you can also set which road types (Main Road, Ferry, Freeway, Toll Road) are to be considered for or to be excluded from the route if possible.
    • Time Restrictions: This setting control whether streets or bridges that have traffic restrictions during a certain time should be taken into account.
    • Learning Route: The system learns the travel history of your vehicle for each road. You can choose whether or not this travel history should be taken into account.

Current Itinerary: The Current Itinerary is a detailed list of the route events or driving instructions.

Waypoints: During an active route, you can insert additional waypoints (intermediate destinations) preceding the destination. You can insert up to 5 waypoints. Every time a new point is added, the route is recalculated automatically and you can start navigating right away.

Travel History: The Track Logger feature enables you to record your driving (travel) history to the unit's built-in flash memory or an inserted SD card.

Intelligent Reroute: If you deviate from the set route, the system will recalculate the route from that point so that you remain on track to your destination.

Route Simulation: A simulation drives you through the route, following the driving instructions.

Eco-Driving Function: This navigation system is equipped with an Eco-driving function that can be used to estimate whether you are driving in an environmentally friendly way.

    • Echo Graph: This function estimates approximate fuel mileage based on your driving, compares that with your average fuel mileage in the past, and displays the results in a graph. The ECO Graph feature provides a view in addition to 2D and 3D, which divides the map view screen with a new graph to provide drivers with a visual representation of their environmental impact.
    • Gas Mileage: You can estimate the fuel cost to your destination by entering in approximate fuel price per gallon.
    • Eco Drive Level Guidance: This navigation is equipped with the Eco Drive Level function that estimates how well you have driven in an environmentally friendly way based on your Eco Score. When a route is set, the unit will calculate a Drive Score based on driving efficiency which factors abrupt stops and accelerations and idle time. Your Eco Score is calculated from the following:
      • Speed: indicates the speed detected (this indication may be different from actual speed of vehicle)
      • Acceleration/Deceleration: indicates acceleration or deceleration velocity of your vehicle
      • Distance: indicates driving distance
      • Incline: indicates the degree of slope of the street that you are currently on
    • Sudden Start Alert: If the speed of the vehicle exceeds 25.5 mph within 5 seconds from the time it is started, a message appears and a warning sound beeps.

Note: The fuel mileage calculated is based on a theoretical value determined from vehicle speed and position information from the navigation system. The fuel mileage displayed is only a reference value, and does not guarantee the mileage displayed can be obtained.

AVIC Feeds PC Application: AVIC FEEDS creates a link between your Pioneer AVIC Navigation system and your Windows PC. It allows you to bring content from your PC and the Internet to the Pioneer navigation head unit. Using Pioneer's free AVIC FEEDS PC software, the unit can estimate the fuel cost of trip routes as well as the vehicle's CO2 emissions through detailed Drive Reports. Through a proprietary fuel consumption algorithm, AVIC FEEDS can also log and archive driving data and analyze driving habits to generate various reports with suggestions to improve fuel efficiency. You can also create custom Points of Interest (POIs) by using the AVIC Feeds utility program. Once created, you can store the POI on an external storage device, such as a SD card, and upload the information to the unit.

AVIC Feeds for Smartphones: Start planning your route before you even step in the car with the free AVIC FEEDS app for smartphones; available now for iPhone or BlackBerry. Now you can simply find your destination using the built-in Google Maps interface, or from a Geo-Tagged photo, and transfer it via Bluetooth for easy, turn-by-turn directions. Destinations created from a POI search or geotagged photos are converted as a phone contact to the navigation system via Bluetooth. Once the phone book is synchronized, the routable contacts are identified by a unique icon that appears next to the contact in the navigation system. By selecting that contact, Pioneer's navigation system will calculate a route and provide turn-by-turn guidance to that location.

    Built-in Bluetooth

Bluetooth Technology: The AVIC-Z140BH is equipped with built-in Bluetooth ver. 2.0+EDR (powered by Parrot) allowing to make and receive phone calls wirelessly through the receiver; as well as stream music wirelessly from your smartphone to the head unit. In order to use Bluetooth wireless technology, your phone must also be Bluetooth compatible and be able to interpret certain profiles. This unit is compatible with the following Bluetooth Profiles:

    • Hands-Free Communication: HFP (Hands Free Profile), HSP (Head Set Profile), OPP (Object Push Profile), PBAB (Phone Book Access Profile).
    • Audio Streaming: A2DP (Advanced Audio Distribution Profile), AVRCP (Audio/Video Remote Control Profile).

Phone Pairing: Up to 5 Bluetooth-compatible devices can be registered to this head unit. Only one device can be used at a time. Due to the differences in Bluetooth technology, some Bluetooth enabled devices may be incompatible, function improperly, or may not support all features when used with the Pioneer AVIC-Z140BH.

Hands-Free Communication: The AVIC-Z140BH supports wireless hands-free communication (HFP/HSP/OPP/PBAB) for your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone. The head unit will display the caller's information and an audible ring tone will be heard through your vehicle's speaker during an incoming call. You can manually answer an incoming call or have the unit automatically answer the call. The AVIC-Z140BH allows you to carry on a phone conversation from your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone using the head unit's external microphone and your car audio speakers. During a conversation you can adjust the volume, as well as switch between the Private Mode (talking directly on your cell phone) and the Hands Free Mode. Using the AVIC-Z140BH, you can dial a phone number in one of the following ways:

    • Voice Recognition: The AVIC-Z140BH features voice recognition for hands-free Bluetooth calling. Now, you can call any of your phonebook contacts simply by using your voice and their name. The voice recognition feature not only performs in-car tasks with greater speed, but helps you keep your eyes (and attention) on the road ahead.
    • Entering a Phone Number: You can make a call by entering the phone number using the head unit's on-screen keypad (0-9, +/-).
    • Call Home: You can save your Home phone number for quick & easy dialing.
    • Phone Book: The phone book in your Bluetooth enabled cellular phone will be transferred automatically when the phone is paired to this unit. After finding the number you want to call in the phone book, you can select the entry and make the call. If a lot of numbers are registered in the phone book, you can search for the phone number by alphabet search mode. A maximum of 1,000 phone book entries can be transferred per cellular phone. Each entry can hold up to 5 phone numbers.
    • Call History: The most recent calls dialed, received, and missed are stored in memory. Each call history saves up to 30 calls per registered cellular phone. You can browse them and call numbers from these lists.
    • Favorite Locations: You can make a call to an location stored in the unit's Navigation Favorites list.
    • POI Dialing: You can make a call to a point-of-interest which contains phone number data.
    • Map Dialing: You can make a call by selecting the icon of a registered location or a POI icon from the map (must contain phone number data).

Note: Advanced phone operations that require attention, such as dialing numbers on the monitor or adjusting Bluetooth settings, are prohibited while driving. The vehicle must have the parking brake engaged to access these functions.

External Microphone: During your wireless phone call, you can talk into the head unit's included external microphone, and listen to the other party through the vehicle's speaker system. The external microphone provides better performance in noisy environments than the integrated microphone found on the front-panel of many aftermarket or factory radios. The microphone features a 13' cord that plugs into the back of the radio, and comes with an adjustable visor-mount clip. The microphone measures 0.475" (diameter) x 1.445" (depth). The unit is not equipped with an integrated microphone. The external microphone must be installed for Bluetooth hands-free communication.

Echo Canceling w/ Noise Reduction: This function reduces echo and noise when using the multimedia-navigation's Bluetooth hands-free communication feature.

Wireless Audio Streaming: The Pioneer AVIC-Z140BH also supports wireless audio playback (AD2P) and control (AVRCP) of a Bluetooth enabled audio player or smartphone. The AVIC-Z140BH will be able to control basic playback functions of your Bluetooth device's stored music; such as Play/Pause, Skip Next/Previous, and Fast Forward/Rewind. The head unit will also display your stored music's song information; such as Song and Album title. The AVIC-Z140BH also supports audio streaming of select music apps from your Bluetooth enabled smartphone, but without control or metadata. You will continue to use your Bluetooth enabled smartphone to view and control streaming music apps. HD Radio + XM Ready

HD Radio: The Pioneer AVIC-Z140BH's built-in HD Radio tuner lets you listen to the radio with the same fidelity as your digital music. HD Radio features high quality audio, FM multi-casting, and data services. With HD Radio, your FM stations offer near CD-quality sound, AM stations provide FM-like sound, and there is crystal-clear reception with no audio distortion. Best of all, HD Radio is 100% subscription free. The unit's tuner also supports analog AM/FM broadcasts. HD Radio is the system for digital AM and FM broadcasting in the U.S. More than 2,000 radio stations are broadcasting their primary signals in digital HD Radio technology, as a free service. Go to HDRadio.com to check for HD Radio stations in your area.

Multicasting: In addition to conventional broadcasts, with HD Radio broadcasting it is possible to choose from up to 3 multicast programs (HD1 to HD3, and analog). There are also data programs for each program.

RDS: The Radio Data System (RDS) feature displays radio broadcast information such as artist, title, and album when listening to compatible analog or HD AM/FM stations.

iTunes Tagging: It is possible to save the song's information (tag) from a HD Radio broadcasting station to your USB-direct connected iPod/iPhone. The songs will show up in a playlist called "Tagged" in iTunes the next time you sync your iPod/iPhone. Then you can directly buy the songs you want from the iTunes Music Store.

Supertuner IIID: The Supertuner IIID features Feed Forward Control, which avoids multi-path interference. This pre-detection of interference enables quick filter control and results in less distortion. In addition, the Supertuner IIID creates enhanced stereo during multi-path interference, unlike conventional tuners that collapse to mono. Digital processing reduces distortion, and improves Signal-to-Noise Ratio and stereo separation. Advanced analog technology improves signal processing sensitivity.

Reception Blending: If a digital broadcast reception condition gets poor, this unit automatically switches to the analog broadcast of the same frequency level. If this function is set to "On", the tuner switches between digital broadcast and analog broadcast automatically. If this function is 'Off', reception will be conducted within an analog broadcast.

BSM (Best Stations Memory): The BSM (Best Stations Memory) function lets you automatically store the six strongest analog or HD stations under preset buttons 1-6 of the currently tuned band. The tuner has 3 FM banks and 1 AM bank. You can store 6 presets for each bank giving you a total of 18 FM presets and 6 AM presets.

Local Tuning: Local seek tuning lets you tune in only those radio stations with sufficiently strong signals for good reception. There are 4 level of sensitivity for FM and two levels for AM. The higher settings allow reception of only the strongest stations, while lower settings let you receive progressively weaker stations.

XM Satellite Radio Ready: You can connect and control Pioneer's GEX-P920XM satellite tuner (130P920XM, sold separately). A subscription to XM, plus the proper antenna is required in order to receive satellite radio programming.

    • Continuous Power Output: 22 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 50Hz-15kHz, 5% THD)
    • Maximum Power Output: 50 watts x 4 channels (or 50 watts x 2 channels at 4 ohms + 70 watts x 1 channel at 2 ohms for subwoofer)

EEQ (Easy EQ): there are seven stored equalizer curves which you can easily recall at any time. You can choose from - Powerful, Natural, Vocal, Super Bass, Flat, Custom 1, or Custom 2.

8-Band Graphic EQ: The Custom 1 and Custom 2 EQ modes allow you to manually adjust the level (+/- 12dB) of each band of the head unit's 8-band graphic equalizer (40Hz, 80Hz, 200Hz, 400Hz, 1kHz, 2.5kHz, 8kHz, and10kHz).

Auto EQ (Optional): The auto-equalizer automatically measures your car's interior acoustic characteristics, and then creates an auto-equalizer curve base on that information. The Pioneer CD-MC20 Auto-EQ microphone (130CDMC20, sold separately) is required to use this function. The Pioneer CD-MC20 Auto-EQ microphone plugs into your compatible Pioneer A/V receiver's front-panel 3.5mm input. The Auto-EQ microphone should be placed in the center of your vehicle's driver seat headrest facing forward for EQ measurement.

Sonic Center Control: Sound that is suited for the listening position can easily be created with this function. You can adjust sound more toward the listening position left (7) to right (7).

Loudness: The Loudness function compensates for deficiencies in the low- and high-frequency ranges at low volume. You can set the Loudness to High, Mid, Low, or Off.

Bass Boost: You can easily boost the subwoofer bass level by using the Bass Boost function. The Bass Boost feature allows you increase the subwoofer level from 0 to +6 (12dB).

Advanced Sound Retriever: The Advanced Sound Retriever automatically enhances compressed audio and restores the original richness of the recording. When the Advanced Sound Retriever is on, the high frequency range is compensated to match the frequency response curve to the original sound. There are two available levels of the Advanced Sound Retriever effect.

Source Level Adjustment (SLA): This function lets you adjust the volume level of each source to prevent radical changes in volume when switching between sources. Settings are based on the volume level of the FM tuner, which remains unchanged. Each source can be independently adjusted from -8 dB to +8 dB.

4V/6ch Preamp Outputs: The Pioneer AVIC-Z140BH is equipped with three 4-volt preamp outputs (Front/Rear/Subwoofer). The front and rear speakers are fading with high-pass crossover filters, while the subwoofer output is non-fading with a low-pass crossover filter.

    • Front & Rear Preamp Outputs: If you do not want low frequency sounds to play from the front or rear speaker preamp outputs (or speaker outputs), you can turn on the 12dB/octave High Pass Filter. The HPF has a selectable cutoff frequency (50, 63, 80, 100, or 125 Hz). Only frequencies higher than those in the selected range are output through the speakers.
    • Subwoofer Output: The unit has a pair of dedicated non-fading RCA subwoofer outputs with a low-pass filter, phase adjustment, and output level. When the subwoofer output is turned on, you can select the frequency of the 18dB/octave low pass filter (50, 63, 80, 100, or 125 Hz), select the subwoofer phase (normal/reverse), and the subwoofer gain (+6 to -24).

Telephone Mute/Attenuator: Sound from your system is muted or attenuated automatically when a phone signal is received when you have hardwired your mobile phone system to the mute wire (yellow/black) of this unit.

Key Beep: The in-dash navigation-multimedia head unit provides an audible beep to confirm button operation. This function can be turned On or Off.

    AV Connections

Dual AV Inputs: The AVIC-Z140BH features two AV inputs. There is a rear-panel composite video/stereo RCA AV input for connecting a video component such as a DVD player or game console. The AVIC-Z140BH also has a 3.5mm minijack AV input for connecting a portable audio/video device. The AV 3.5mm input is provided by the included proprietary USB/minijack cable (this AV input also doubles as the unit's iPod USB/AV input).

AV Output (with Dual Zone): The AVIC-Z140BH features a rear-panel composite video/stereo RCA audio output that allows you to connect an external display to the unit. You can playback audio/video content from a Disc, your iPod/iPhone (not iPhone 5), and the AV 1/2 inputs in the rear zone; or your can simply have the rear AV output mirror the head unit's selected source. You can select the unit to output a 16:9, Letter-Box or Pan-Scan aspect ratio to match your external display's screen size. You cannot play DivX files on the unit's monitor and a connected external monitor at the same time.

Rear View Camera: The AVIC-Z140BH is equipped with a composite video Rear View Camera input. The unit features a function that automatically switches to the rear camera image (Rear View Camera input jack) when an optional rear camera (130NDBC5, sold separately) is installed. When the transmission is in reverse, the screen automatically switches to the rear view camera (the violet/white wire in the AVIC-Z140BH's harness must be connected to the vehicle's reverse lamp circuit for automatic video switching). Automatic video switching takes approximately 1.5 seconds. Pioneer recommends using a camera with a mirror image (reversed) output. Audio from your music source will continue playing, while the back-up camera is displayed.

    Remote Control

Steering Wheel Remote Compatibility: The head unit features an OEM steering wheel remote control input on the rear of the unit that lets you keep your vehicle's factory radio steering wheel remote controls when used with an optional steering wheel audio control adapter (sold separately). Please consult Crutchfield's Outfit My Car to see if your vehicle is compatible.

    An intelligent type-prompting system

Written by Ken Nail, Staff Writer - Creative, on 6/8/2012 10:55:00 AM

Some things just bug me. And one of those is working with a touch-screen keypad, like those you'll find on navigation receivers. Hunting and pecking to enter an address is a slow, somewhat painful process that inevitably seems to result in a mistyped city or street name.

Pioneer's AVIC-Z140BH is a welcome change. As you start to type in a street or city name, the on-screen keyboard automatically highlights the next possible letters, graying out the ones you don't need. This speeds up the process considerably for me. I don't have to scan the entire keyboard to find the next letter. When the receiver has enough letters to provide a short list of possible city or street names, it defaults automatically to it, saving even more time. It's simple, easy to use, and saves time when you want to get on the road to your next destination.

    The future-ready receiver

Written by Matt Freeman, Staff Writer - Creative, on 7/31/2012 2:27:00 PM

Clearly, Pioneer has an eye on the future. As more people use their smartphones, especially the iPhone®, for pretty much everything, Pioneer's begun thinking of receivers not only as sources of entertainment, but as interfaces designed to make using the iPhone in the car more fun. To see how well they're doing, I brought the AVIC-Z140BH navigation receiver into the Crutchfield Labs, hooked it up to an iPhone, and dove right in.

What impressed me most was how quickly and easily I was able to bounce around. I plugged in the phone, launched Pioneer's "AppRadio" app, and in seconds I was using the receiver's 7" touchscreen to surf the Aupeo!, Livio Radio, and Rdio Internet radio services. After that, I did a couple of searches on Google Maps, checked my calendar (no pressing appointments, thankfully), and pulled up a couple of photos I'd taken earlier. Then I popped over to Pandora®, took a dip in Aha Radio, and finished by playing some stored songs. Not once in all this did I have to touch the iPhone itself. One thing I particularly liked: the receiver's app menu screen showed me the availability of updated apps. That means that whenever new apps become available, it'll be easy to find out. And that makes this receiver ready for the future indeed.

    Horrible maps and interface

Written By z4me, San Diego on Sunday, February 02, 2014

The map data on this unit is horrible. Good luck going through a rural area using the navigation. It will most likely tell you that it cannot provide guidance in those areas. After taking an interchange, it sometimes looses track of your next maneuver, and that can go on for a couple hundred miles. You cannot switch between presets with the steering wheel. For some reason, it defaults to my iPod Touch for hands free bluetooth operation if my phone is not present when I start my car (which is really annoying cause I have a remote starter). I just found out the worst part, which is that it will cost big bucks to update the map. Its think it is time for me to get rid of this thing and get something else.
    Pros:
I have never noticed any glare.
    Cons:
Not worth the price that I paid to get it.

    Pioneer AVIC-Z140BH

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have installed this unit in a 2006 Mustang convertible. The non-glare screen is great in the bright light conditions of a convertible. I had purchased a Jensen VM9725BT that has a reflective screen. Could not see the screen if the sun was out. Crutchfield was great in allowing me to return the Jensen for the Pioneer unit. The unit was easy to install with the instructions from Crutchfield. ALso installed a back up camera that works well with the unit. Sound of HD radio is good. Pioneer apps function are not easily set up.
    Pros:
    Large bright non glare screen
    Cons:
The tuner does not show frequencies on the set screen. It also does not show the stations name or frequency on the tuning screen. The Jensen showed both. Not full text to speech on navigation. Give interstate routing numbers but not street names when making a turn.

    Amazing unit

I own this and the kenwood dnx9980hd... Both flagship units for 2012... This unit performs 10x better and processes twice as fast as the kenwood unit...the people that say this unit is hard to use haven't used the kenwood. You can't expect all the optionsthatthis unit has and it not taking a little time to figure out how to use it...
    Pros:
Every option for 2012 Fast processor Easy to use

    Pioneer AVIC GPS receiver

Written By Eric, Dublin, OH on Friday, August 09, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I upgraded my truck stereo to this GPS Tuner. I have the 7 speaker Bose system. I also have integrated my steering wheel controls. Upsides: BIg screen, backup camera are great.
    Pros:
Big bright screen and integrated backup camera. Hands free telephone is the best I've used (my microphone is on the visor). Traffic feed to GPS works well.
    Cons:
The Bluetooth connectivity isn't as seemless as my 2012 VW factory stereo but it does work. The GPS (Garmin based) got me lost last week and isn't nearly as nice as my Android smartphone. I wish it was easier to go from one preset to another with my steering wheel controls.

Good radio with realitively easy install especially using posi connectors. Minor problem with blue tooth set up, but all other functions work great. Crutchfield tech support was very helpful on the blue tooth issue. I recommend this product highly but really recommend Crutchfield.

Slow. Feels behind the times for the money.

Written By Jake, Royal Oak, MI on Wednesday, July 24, 2013

This unit is behind the times. I recommend get a Pioneer DEH-80PRS 1 DIN (which is AWESOME) and just put in a blank for the remaining dash space. The maps are terrible. Use your phone instead. Voice command doesn't work. BT audio nobody can understand me. Boot time is slow. BT connection time is slow. User interface for establishing and managing a BT connection is super confusing. There should be more explanation of what is going on. Only has one USB. Doesn't support bi-amplification / 3 way crossovers. EQ band count number is low. If you get the DEH-80PRS you get a much better EQ, 2 USBs, faster boot times, cleaner operation, cleaner sound, better DAC, on face analog connection, and you save a LOT of money. Again, just use your phone for navigation. I'd much rather have good quality fast smooth (iPad like or Google like) navigation in a 2DIN unit, but I have yet to find one that actually runs smooth and works good. Until such time, these 2DIN Navis aren't that great in my opinion (and this was the best one I could find in Fall of 2012).
    Pros:
It looks kinda cool...until you start to use it. Allows for very dim screen which is super nice for in your face installs and night time driving (other 2DINS I tried are WAAAY to bright at night even at the dimmest setting).
    Cons:
    As noted in the review.

This unit is a true delight. I hooked it to two headrest monitors and am able to show DVD movies as well as any from my iPod as well. The kids love it and it make the road trips go by faster and with less stops. I love the hands free calling features. If there is a draw back it is the large number of connectors and wiring that stick out the back off the unit. It's a lot to stuff out of the way and keep out of the way.
    Pros:
Shows DVD and iPod movies and music videos. Great hands free features, great screen.
    Cons:
Lots of wiring that has to tied up out of the way.

    Way more Negatives than Positives!!!

Written By Anonymous, Austin, TX on Tuesday, January 29, 2013

Bought my Pioneer AVIC-Z140BH b/c of good reviews read here and other sites but they are W-A-Y off. Here is what I WISHED I had known BEFORE I bought it, spent $$$ for install, parts, time, planning and energy. Hopefully this helps somebody!!!! -Buttons on screen are either too small or too large (turner SEEK). -Tuner set buttons do not label the stations at all. And don't try to set them b/c any misguided tap of screen (when hitting a bump in the road) erases everything. -Tuner is HD but you have to decide to either show the station, song name or artist b/c there is only 1 line you can adjust, yet there is still 2/3 available black screen that could have been used. -12million POI's are broken into one hundred groups and subgroups but you can view only 10 on the screen at a time. There are 3 dozen restaurant sub-groups alone. -On my 2006 factory Honda Pilot navigation, when I want to see a POI, I touch it anywhere on the screen and a window gives me the data. On this, you must navigate the POI by touching the screen and move the entire map into a very small red cursor box located in the center of the screen to bring up the info. Very hard to do while driving!!!!! -Half the addresses I tried to look up are not found. There are more small things that I was displeased about and unfortunately all these small things make 1 large disappointment. If this was priced at $300-$500 I would give it 3 stars, maybe, but to be so expensive and such a fail!
    Pros:
2D/3D Navigation landmarks. Real-time traffic, good video quality
    Cons:
Tuner interface, limited POI, can only costume splash screen

    Not pleased

Written By Den, Houston, tx on Saturday, January 12, 2013

Went to get a Kenwood DNX7190 but my local auto stereo guy was out and suggested Pioneer Z140. Oh hey, Pioneer has been good in the past so I had it installed, big mistake. 1st the sound is terrible. I can hear the music and very little voice, I have adjusted the EQ almost every way possible. It you turn up the volume it's not too bad but if you want to talk to someone setting next to you you are not going to hear much singing. The BIGGEST problem is the Navigation, I live in Houston and I input something like Walmart and I get two or three pages of Walmarts all of them in Houston. It gives you mileage, no direction, the first three are 4.8 miles away, the next two are 5.1 miles. I don't know if I'm suppose to go back, forward, left or right. I choose one and it may be in the wrong direction, who knows until you select it, push the back screen and you have to retype Walmart again, absolutely no address. I'm setting right in front of a Mexican restaurant so I look up POI to see what it has to say. After 3 screens and paging down to Mexican food, what do ya think? Not listed. I went to Pioneer's web site and told them the problem because maybe i had it setup wrong, nope they wrote back and said it doent do addresses. I called my stereo guy and believe me he got an ear full, all he could tell me was wait until Feb. 2013 the new Kenwood's are going to be great. Well I can wait, I just hope he doesn't wait on me to come back.
    Pros:
None, the cons out weigh anything good to say
    Cons:
All of the above. I took a four day trip and had to use my phone to find addresses and accommodations because navigation had me going in circles.

using the Avic 140BH is an auto accident waiting to happen

Written By Gerrym, Ridgefield, CT on Saturday, December 22, 2012

I bought this radio for my car after doing much research on the best car receivers available. It was highly recommended. HOWEVER, the user interface is simply horrible, not designed to be used by a driver in a moving vehicle. One of the most important features I was looking for was voice activated hands free phone calling as I spend a lot of time in my car. The voice activation simply just does not work. It cannot recognize any of my contacts, even with the car off, parked, the windows up and engine off. I called Pioneer and they were very helpful but said that I had to speak more clearly. I had 4 other people try to use it and we ended up hysterical laughing at the names it selected. Not even close. The user interface is dangerous to use while driving. Lots and Lots of small icon buttons that are easy to miss when you are driving unless you take your eyes off the road for way too much time. When using the radio you can preselect your preferred channels but the interface does not show you the names of the channels, It simply lists the channels as channel 1, 2,3, etc. so you have to know which channel you want by the radio's assigned number. The GPS will get you there, but forget trying to figure out the features that are unique to Pioneer. The technical people at Crutchfield were very helpful and offered to let me return the unit for a full refund but I opted to keep it because it was over $200 to install and another $200 to reinstall my old radio. 2 bad!
    Pros:
the unit does sound nice with stock speakers
    Cons:
The user interface is dangerous to use in a moving vehicle. Please take the time to watch the Youtube video by an independent person who evaluated the unit in great detail. I wish I had found this in advance of buying it. Then you can decide if the unit is right for you.

I have owned many of the later pioneer DVD players over the last five years. I love them all. That being said I hate this unit with a passion. This is the biggest user interface failure I have ever experience. I can't say enough about this loser of a deck. Why do I have to press three times to get the screen to go black? I love Pioneer and I will continue to use their products but do not buy the 2012 version of this garbage.

    Returned and bought Kenwood 7190

Written By So bad I had to get rid of it!!!, Woodbridge, CT on Thursday, November 22, 2012

I absolutely hate this radio and returned it for a Kenwood DNX 7190 after 6 months of trying to get it to work. The controls are difficult to use while driving, the voice recognition with the windows rolled up is terrible. When you search for restaurants while on the highway you need to select them by individual catagorysuch as American, Fast Food, Italian etc and when they come, it gives you all of the restaurants in that catagory, including the ones behind you. My inexpensive Gamin Nuvi is much more user friendly than this radio. The only thing good I can say is that it does sound very good with the stock speakers in my 2011 4Runner. Another big issue is the size of the user manual, Its ridiculous that the manual is 3 inches thick printed out on 81/2 x 11" paper. Any electronic device that is used in your car, just should not be that complicated to use. The Kenwood manual is 64 pages and thats it!
    Pros:
    Sounds good!
    Cons:
Everything else, don't buy this radio.

    Beyond disappointed. Absolute garbage.

Written By Dale H, Eau Claire, WI on Friday, November 16, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Not even deserving of a full star. It has OK stereo functionality but nothing that models 1/4 the cost can't handle.

The User interface is clunky. I wish I had believed other reviewers claiming this was five years behind everything else before I paid to have it professionally installed; I certainly believe them now.

I was so excited to get this installed as we were leaving on a road trip. Now I am looking up maps on my Android instead of my pricey head unit, which is pathetic by comparison. It is terrible at auto rerouting. It simply attempts to have you turn around every few seconds instead of actually rerouting. However, don't cancel your route or you will need to pull over on the shoulder to do anything after that.

Don't be fooled by the misleading pictures above that show nice 3D mapping. That feature probably doesn't exist where you live. Driving along and need a place to eat? Be ready to put your parking brake on before you can get to that information. As a passenger in my wife's car, I have to go back to my Android phone for information like that. Getting this for voice activation? Keep on looking because it isn't half as good as my base factory model unit I was replacing. You can't control your hands free call volume through your steering wheel controls. That is a bug pioneer hasn't fixed in several models of this line. I have been a long time customer of Crutchfield and I feel duped by their reviews that sugar coat major issues. I think this will be my last purchase from them.
    Pros:
I can't see any area in which pioneer doesn't lag way behind ever other company.
    Cons:
Terrible voice control Terrible GPS Terrible user interface Slow boot time 18+ seconds Bug in steering wheel control (it isn't the interface, it is the Z140BH. Same problem in Z110BT, Z120BT & Z130BT. Terrible navigation system

    Z140BH

Written By Ron, Central NJ on Friday, October 05, 2012

Installed this in my 2012 VW Passat and couuldnt be happier. I used to have an AVIC Z2 which I loved, and was worried because Pioneer switched to some garbage mapping software after the Z2. Luckilly they switched back to some quality software for the Z140BH. After putting it through the paces for 6 months now, its PERFECT! I cant comment on the amp quality because I run the Z140 with a JL HD6004 amp.
    Pros:
Back to great mapping software! Great speed, accuracy, and all the features you could ask for!
    Cons:

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Not worth the $. I am returning it to Crutchfield. Very simple user interface, very little you can customize. For the price, I want menus, sub menus, and more sub menus, I want a MUTE button on the front, a dial pad on the phone display so I can enter stuff when I call customer services, I want a Bluetooth microphone sensitivity level adjustment option like the Kenwood (which I am trading it for), and the list goes on and on. It does sound nice. On the other hand, for over a grand wouldn't you at least include a remote like $99 receivers include? A remote is a big deal, for the passenger, or passengers in the back, or even the driver on bumpy roads or even non bumpy roads so he doesn't have to try and play bulls eye. Kenwoods flagship includes a remote. Why are onscreen buttons so small? For instance, when the phone rings, there is this little square in the middle with a red and green button to clear/answer the call, and the phone number of the caller. Why wouldn't it be the majority of the screen, with huge buttons? You are driving after all. The voice activation on this is a complete joke. My 2005 Acura RL (7years older) understands everything I say 99.5% of the time, from "dial 801-785-****", "call Mom", "navigate to 1255 Yorkshire Drive", "play disk 5", "FM preset 3", etc., etc., etc. Why during a phone call do I have to take my eyes off the road to aim for the tiny volume up/down buttons on the touchscreen? Why can't I use the volume buttons, logical!
    Pros:
MIGHT be an upgrade from factory cheap radio, will get you the basics like streaming Pandora, back up camera, entry level Bluetooth connectivity, iPod hook up, lame navigation that is difficult to use and very entry level.
    Cons:
Outdated 5 years ago, no remote, no mute button, not enough buttons in general on the bottom face, could fit twice as many like Kenwood did, very little control over features, and customizing. I really am disappointed in the graphical user interface that Pioneer included in this unit: it's just sad.

    Great Unit

Written By Ken, Anniston, AL on Monday, July 16, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a great unit. I installed it into a 2012 Chevy Silverado as stated by Crutchfield that some units may require some modification mine did. This unit was not plug and play as they say it required modification by removing the entire back of the back area where the radio mounts to allow it to fit. The unit has lots of options and has a steep learning curve but thats not a bad point only a pointer that you will probably be riding around with the manual for a week till you get it all down.
    Pros:
Great unit, lots of options and excellent sound.
    Cons:
Some modification may be required to get it to fit and some of the menus require getting used too.

    Pros:
Great Navigation and audio controls. Picture quality looks great

Great unit, but big interface flaws

Written By Justin, NJ on Monday, June 25, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this unit based on my experience with past Pioneer units and had high expectations. The unit has every feature you could want and looks great on paper, but is plagues by an abysmal interface design. In the short time I've had the unit I've been super happy with it's performance and incredibly frustrated with it's operation. I'm already praying that they put out a fw update to fix some of this.
    Pros:
Every feature you could want. Sounds great.
    Cons:
    1) Sirius station / info display is limited to small section of screen (need to push button to switch between station/track info) 2) Presets do not display any station info. Instead they just show P CH1, P CH2 ... This is a nightmare when you have 15 presets per input 3) Preset menu / side display is not always displayed / getting it onscreen is a huge pain

    pioneer avic 140bh

Written By Howard B, Randolph, NJ on Wednesday, May 23, 2012

Bought the Pioneer for my 911. The unit is great, does everything you would want. I took it back after two weeks. Very diappointed in not being able to see the preset menu, either for terrestrial radio, satellite, or ipod selection. Your presets can be set, 18 of them, once you select, its displays the station selected. The problem is you can't select a station from the preset menu, 18 selections, but who can remember where you placed what station. Very annoying. Called Pioneer about issue, hard wired, not a software issue, Tech said something about HD tuner. Since I listen to radio, wander through my presets as I drive, not have visual selection is VERY BAD. Returned unit, went for the Kenwood 9990hd.
    Cons:
Can't veiw preset selections as a group off selection menu. This was a killer for me. NEVER buy unit.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I waited about 2 weeks before writing review. this radio is really nice, very easy to use. i recently had the pioneer Avic D3 in my truck and i loved it, so i decided to replace it with another pioneer flagship system. the only thing i noticed was the sound did'nt sound as crisp as the D3 but sounds excellent. i feel very excited with it and would recommend it to anybody who can afford it .
    Pros:
    everything is excellent
    Cons:
    nothing

    Pioneer AVIC-Z140BH

Written By Mark H, NJ on Sunday, April 29, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This unit works great. Has a lot of nice features. I definitely like the maps much better than when I had owned the Kenwood Excelon DNX9990HD earlier before returning it to Crutchfield. If you read my review there you would see how picky I am. This unit is night and day difference.

I will give another review after 2-3 months after I get more hands-on time.
    Pros:
Great Navigation and audio controls. Picture quality looks great.
    Cons:
Bulky HD/FM Antenna box. Exterior of unit looks like from a low end model. The Kenwood Excelon DNX9990HD looks much better visually.

This deck has everything. I love the way they let you customize it. I can change the boot up screen, some of the icons, I can add points of interest to my Nav map and much more. The unit is fast and runs smooth. This thing has so many features, i just dont have the time to write it all down. If you can afford this unit I would recommend it for sure! This unit fit in the stock mount of a 370z Nismo
    Pros:
    Speed, features, user friendly!
    Cons:
none that I can think of.
