Pioneer

Our take on the Pioneer AVIC-D1

If you have a double-sized 4" tall dash opening in your vehicle, think about filling it with Pioneer's AVIC-D1 CD receiver. It offers advanced, accurate GPS navigation, playback of your CDs, MP3s, and WMAs, touch-screen system control, and a big 6.5" screen — all in a package that fits perfectly in your dash.

To navigate, just slide the map DVD-ROM into its slot, then use the touchscreen controls to enter your destination. Enter a specific street address, an intersection, or choose from nearly 11 million points of interest, such as hotels, restaurants, and gas stations. As you drive, the map on the display shows you where you are and when you need to make your next turn. Voice prompts also assist, telling you exactly when you need to make a turn. Should you miss a turn, the system will recalculate your route automatically.

Two DVD-ROM discs include all the maps you'll need. Because the receiver is double-sized, it has room for two slots behind the fold-down faceplate: one for your CDs and one for the DVD-ROM disc. You won't have to remove the DVD-ROM to enjoy your music while the navigation system is working.

Add a compatible tuner (see Accessories) and subscribe to XM's innovative NavTraffic™ service, and you'll receive continuously updated traffic information in many major metropolitan areas. This includes traffic accident alerts, road closure info, plus the average speed of traffic on the roads along the route you're navigating. You'll be prepared for traffic snags well in advance, and can adjust your route accordingly.

The Roadside Assistance package lets you store emergency contact information and access it simply by pressing a single button. The screen shows you exactly where you are, including latitude and longitude readings, so you'll be able to direct emergency personnel. And Pioneer includes an offer for a year's worth of free roadside assistance service from a national auto club.

The AVIC-D1 is a great performer, too. It'll play your standard CDs, plus the MP3 and WMA files you've burned on disc. Its audio/video input lets you add an external DVD player, videocassette player, or game console, and enjoy video while you're parked. Pioneer's iPod™ interface adapter lets you play your iPod through the AVIC-D1, and control it using the touch screen. It'll also control a compatible XM or SIRIUS radio.

You can also have the AVIC-D1's screen display several of your vehicle's performance specifications, including acceleration, lateral G-force, and speed). It's a fun way to explore your car's capabilities.

A strong internal amplifier puts out plenty of power for a full, rich sound. And you can use the interactive touch-screen menus to adjust the extensive tone controls, so the sound is just right for your vehicle.

To see if the AVIC-D1 fits your vehicle, please click "your vehicle" above.

General Features

Disc Compatibility: The AVIC-D1 is compatible with DVD-ROM navigation map discs only and cannot play standard video DVDs.

Motorized Video Display: This unit is equipped with a motorized 6.5" color TFT active matrix, widescreen LCD that serves as a video monitor and system information display. The display has a 16:9 aspect ratio, and a resolution of 1440 x 234 for a total of 336,960 pixels.

Touch Screen Controls: This unit has touch screen controls with interactive video graphics, making menu navigation easy. The screen is non-glare and smudge-resistant.

Display Angle Adjustment: You can adjust the display's angle for better visibility. The display tilts forward and backward, allowing you to choose one of 6 tilt positions.

Display Adjustment: You can adjust the display's brightness, contrast, color, and hue.

Display Dimming: The brightness of the LCD screen adjusts automatically according to the ambient light. The ambient light sensor is located on the top edge of the LCD panel.

Widescreen Modes: You can choose from the following widescreen modes:

  • Full: a 4:3 picture is enlarged in the horizontal direction only, enabling you to enjoy a 4:3 picture without any omissions
  • Just: the picture is enlarged slightly at the center and the amount of enlargement increases horizontally toward the ends of the picture
  • Cinema: a picture is enlarged by the same proportion as Full or Zoom in the horizontal direction and by an intermediate proportion between Full and Zoom in the vertical direction
  • Zoom: a 4:3 picture is enlarged in the same proportion both vertically and horizontally; ideal for a 16:9 screen
  • Normal: a 4:3 picture is displayed as it is

MOSFET50 Internal Amplifier: This receiver is equipped with a 50 watts x 4 (peak) MOSFET amplifier for low distortion, high power output. The amplifier is strong enough to power small subwoofers to moderate volume levels in compact cars and pickups. For higher volume levels from subwoofers, an optional amplifier may be connected to the preamp outputs.

Satellite Radio Ready: The AVIC-D1 can control optional XM or SIRIUS satellite radio tuners. You can add one of two optional Pioneer XM Satellite Radio tuners, GEX-P910XM or GEX-P10XMT, or a SIRIUS SIR-PNR1 tuner. Subscriptions to XM or SIRIUS are required.

TV Tuner Controls: If desired, you can add a compatible Pioneer TV tuner to this unit, and the unit will be able to control various functions of the tuner.

Easy EQ Curves: This model features 6 preset EQ curves: Super Bass, Powerful, Natural, Vocal, Custom, and Flat. The Custom curve allows you to create and store EQ settings in memory. A separate Custom curve can be created and stored in memory for each source.

EQ-EX: This feature smoothes the effects of each equalizer curve.

3-Band Parametric Equalizer: This unit includes a 3-band parametric EQ with Selectable Q Factor. You may select a low (40Hz, 80Hz, 100Hz, or 160Hz), mid (200kHz, 500kHz, 1kHz, or 2kHz) and high frequency (3.15kHz, 8kHz, 10kHz, or 12.5kHz) to boost or cut within a range of -6dB to +6dB. The Q factor (slope of the boost or cut) may be selected from one of the following four options: 2N (narrow), 1N, 1W and 2W (wide). Selecting a narrow (steep) Q factor results in frequencies around the center frequency to be affected less by the boost or cut than they are with a wide Q factor. This feature is useful for taming frequency response problems caused by the dimensions, materials and speaker locations of a vehicle.

Adjustable Loudness: You can select one of three different levels of loudness compensation. A "low" loudness contour provides a +3.5dB boost at 100Hz and +3dB boost at 10kHz. A "mid" boost is +10dB (100Hz) and +6.5dB (10kHz). A "high" loudness contour is +11dB at both 100Hz and 10kHz.

Note: These Loudness contours use a reference volume level of -30dB.

Source Level Adjustment (SLA): This function lets you adjust the volume level of each source to prevent radical changes in volume when switching between sources. Settings are based on the volume level of the FM tuner, which remains unchanged.

High-pass Filter: When you don't want sound in the subwoofer frequency range output from the front and rear speakers, you may activate the built-in high-pass filter. You may select a filter frequency of 50Hz, 80Hz, or 125Hz.

Subwoofer/Non-fading Preouts: In addition to the front and rear preamp outputs, there is one set of outputs that may be set for "subwoofer" or "non-fading" output. When set to "non-fading", the signal is full-range and the output level is user selectable from -6 to +6. When set to "subwoofer", the outputs are non-fading, and they may be set for normal or reverse phase, 50Hz/80Hz/125Hz low-pass output, and the level is user selectable from -6 to +6.

Supertuner IIID AM/FM Tuner: The Supertuner IIID features Feed Forward Control, which avoids multi-path interference. This pre-detection of interference enables quick filter control and results in less distortion. In addition, the Supertuner IIID creates enhanced stereo during multi-path interference, unlike conventional tuners that collapse to mono.

MP3/WMA Playback: This unit can play MP3/WMA files recorded on CD-ROM, CD-R, and CD-RW discs in ISO9660 Level 1/Level 2, Joliet, and Romeo formats. MP3 files with a bit rate from 8-320 kbps, WMA files with a constant bit rate from 48-320 kbps, and WMA files with a variable bit rate from 48-384 kbps are supported.

Optional Aux Input: When used with item 130CDRB10 (sold separately) or item 130CDRB20 (sold separately), this unit can accept input from an auxiliary source, such as a portable CD or MD player. When item 130CDRB10 is used, a CD changer cannot be connected to this unit. Item 130CDRB20 allows you to connect an optional Pioneer CD changer and an auxiliary source to this unit.

Cellular Mute: This feature mutes or attenuates the unit's audio output when a cellular call is received, then restores the level once the call is over. To use this feature, you must have a cellular phone with a muting output that can be connected to the muting input wire (yellow/black lead) of this unit.

iPod Adapter Ready: If you have an iPod, you can control it from the AVIC-D1's touch screen with the optional CD-IB100 iPod Interface adapter. The adapter is compatible with iPods that include the Dock Connector.

Rear View Camera: The head unit features a function that automatically switches to the rear camera image (Rear View Camera In jack) when a rear camera is installed on your vehicle. When the shift lever is in the reverse position, the screen automatically switches to the rear view camera. You can also see the image of the rear view camera during normal driving, allowing you to keep an eye on a trailer or boat you may be towing.

Navigation Features

Disc Compatibility: The AVIC-D1 is compatible with specific DVD-ROM navigation map discs only and cannot play standard DVD-ROM discs.

DVD Navigation Maps: The unit comes with the AVIC-D1 (East) Version 1.0 and AVIC-D1 (West) Version 1.0 DVD-ROM discs, which cover the entire United States (including Alaska and Hawaii) and portions of Canada. These discs include a massive "Tele Atlas" database, which enables the units to provide the largest network of turn-by-turn routable roads. The discs provide nearly 11-million points-of-interest throughout the United States and Canada.

XM NavTraffic Ready: XM NavTraffic, powered by NAVTEQ Traffic, allows the unit to monitor real-time traffic conditions and routes the driver to the destination avoiding traffic congestion, using the optional GEX-P10XMT XM NavTraffic Satellite Radio tuner. The traffic information is provided through a continuous satellite broadcast with data from leading commercial traffic data providers, government departments of transportation, police and emergency services, road sensors, cameras, and airborne reports. Separate subscriptions to XM Radio and XM NavTraffic are required.

Stock Prices: In addition to XM NavTraffic, you can receive stock price, sports, news, horoscopes, and other information and display it on the screen when the unit is connected to an XM Satellite tuner. You can display the prices of up to 12 stocks.

Voice Guidance: In addition to graphical directions, the AVIC-D1 provides voice guidance and turn-by-turn directions.

Display Modes: There are three types of map display and two additional view modes:

  • Map View: displays the standard map

  • Guide View: the standard map of your surroundings is overlaid with the name of the street you will turn onto next, and 2 arrows: the larger one to the left indicating the direction of your next maneuver and how far you are from approaching it, and the smaller one to the right indicating the direction of your second to next maneuver and how far you are from approaching it.

  • Route View: displays the name of the street you will next travel along and an arrow indicating the direction of travel

  • Vehicle Dynamics Display: displays three instruments that indicate the status of your vehicle. You can change the values displayed by the instruments on the left and right of the Sensor View, allowing you to choose from the following: voltage, acceleration, side acceleration, angular velocity, slope, direction, or clock

  • Rear View: if you have installed a rear view camera, and the camera is set to "On", the rear view image is displayed on the left-hand side of the screen, while the map of your surroundings is indicated on the right

Enlarged Map of the Intersection: When "Close-up of Junction" in the Settings menu is On, an enlarged map of the junction appears while driving.

Display During Freeway Driving: In certain locations of the freeway, lane information is available, indicating the recommended lane to be in to easily maneuver the next guidance. When driving on the freeway, freeway exit numbers and freeway signs may be displayed when in the vicinity of interchanges and exits.

City Map: When driving in a city, the detailed city map is indicated if the map scale is set to 0.05 mi (50 m) or lower (only those cities whose detailed city maps are registered in the map disc).

Scroll Mode: Touching anywhere on the map for at least 2 seconds changes the map to Scroll mode and the map begins scrolling in the direction you touched. The scrolling stops when you remove your finger from the screen. At this time, the cross pointer appears at the center of the screen. Also, a line connecting between the current location and cross pointer appears.

Location Information: An icon appears at registered places (home location, specific places, address book entries) and places where there is a POI icon. Place the cross pointer over the icon to view detailed information.

Destination Input: The Destination Menu gives you many different ways to choose your destination:

  • Point Of Interest (POI): you can search for a Point Of Interest by selecting the category or entering the Point Of Interest name. Additionally, selected Points Of Interest in a certain category can be shown on the map, and you can check the location on the display while driving.
  • Freeway Search: you can set the entrance or exit of a freeway as your destination
  • Telephone Search: if you know the telephone number of your destination, you can quickly search for your destination by specifying the telephone number
  • Return Home and Go To: if your home location is registered, the route home can be calculated by a single touch of the touch key from the Main menu. Also, you can register one location, such as your workplace, as your favorite location, and the route is calculated in a similar way.
  • Destination History: any place that has been searched before is stored in the Destination History
  • Address Search: you can input your destination's address by house number, street name, and city
  • Vicinity Search: allows you to search for Points Of Interest in your surroundings on the map
  • Address Book: places that you have registered manually, such as your home, are stored in the Address Book. Simply select the place you want to go to from the list and a route to that place will be calculated.

Modifying the Route Calculation Conditions: You can change the route calculation conditions using the Route Options menu:

  • Number of Routes: This setting controls whether the system should calculate only one route, or several routes. You can select 1 (only one route judged as being optimum by your Navigation System is calculated) or Multiple (a maximum of 6 route options are calculated).
  • Route Condition: This setting controls whether the fastest or the shortest route should be calculated. When Fast is selected, the system calculates a route with the shortest travel time to your destination as a priority. When Short is selected, the system calculates a route with the shortest distance to your destination as a priority.
  • Avoid Freeway: This setting controls whether or not freeways may be included in the road calculation. You can choose On (calculates a route that avoids freeways) or Off (calculates a route that may include freeways).
  • Avoid Ferry: This setting controls whether or not ferry crossings should be taken into account. You can select On (calculates a route that avoids ferries) or Off (calculates a route that may include ferries).
  • Avoid Toll Road: This setting controls whether or not toll roads should be taken into account. You can choose On (calculates a route that avoids toll roads) or Off (calculates a route that may include toll roads).

Checking the Set Route: You can check information about the route between your current location and your destination. You can select three methods: checking the passing streets with a list, checking the shape of the route by scrolling the map along the route, or checking the entire distance of the route in a single screen.

Recalculating the Route: You can recalculate the route to avoid a traffic jam or road work ahead. You can set the length of the area, and avoid just that area, or you can even search a new route from the current location to your destination.

Adding Way Points to the Current Route: You can select way points (locations you want to visit on the way to your destination) and you can recalculate the route to pass through these locations.

Areas to Avoid: If you register Areas to Avoid, such as crowded intersections or congested areas, routes can be calculated that avoid those areas.

Address Book: The Address Book can store up to 300 registered locations. These can include home location, favorite places, and destinations you have already searched.

Emergency Information: The Emergency Info screen provides important emergency information pertaining to your vehicle, insurance, and current location, which could be useful in the event of an accident or breakdown. The Emergency Info screen includes the following:

  • "You Are Currently At": Your current position is indicated by the street name, and your latitude and longitude.
  • Personal Information: Your VIN number, insurance policy number, and the telephone number of your insurance company can be entered and displayed.
  • Emergency Tow Service Phone: The toll free number for the nearest emergency roadside assistance appears on the screen. This number is supplied by Signature's Nationwide Auto Club, and appears only if you have registered your unit with Pioneer and have signed up on-line with Nationwide Auto Club (1st year service is paid for by Pioneer). If you choose not to subscribe, or if your subscription has expired, you can enter your own roadside assistance telephone number.
  • Locate Car Service: In an emergency, you can search the Emergency Info screen for Auto Services in the vicinity of your current position, and set the current route. You can choose from three sub-categories: Automotive, Rental Car Agency, and Car Dealer.

Changing Background Picture: In the menu operation screen, you can indicate a picture you like on the background. Some pictures are already stored in the head unit and additional background pictures are stored in the Pioneer DVD map discs.

Changer Controls

ITS (Instant Track Selection) Programming: The ITS function can be used to program automatic playback of up to 99 tracks per disc for up to 100 discs. With changers sold before the CDX-P1250 and CDX-P650, up to 24 tracks can be stored in the playlist.

CD Text Display: When used with a CD Text compatible Pioneer CD changer, this unit will display the titles of CD Text encoded discs that are played in the changer.

CD Sound Quality Adjustment: Using the "COMP" (compression) and "DBE" (dynamic bass emphasis) functions, you can adjust the playback quality of the changer. Each function may be set to one of two levels or off. The "COMP" function compresses the audio signal to eliminate distortions caused by the imbalances between the loudest and softest sounds when played at high volumes. The "DBE" function boosts bass frequencies to give your music a more full sound.

Note: For these functions to work, they must be supported by the Pioneer CD changer.

DVD Operation: This unit can control an optional Pioneer DVD player or DVD changer.

These things are to tempting for theives

Written By pauly680, Cambridge MA on Tuesday, March 14, 2006

As far as playing cds and sound quality this thing is an A+ , but the Navi sucks. If you live in any major city (im in the Boston / Cambridge area ) the maps are so out of date its ridiculous. You would have to ignore 90% of the directions it gave you. The nav is no where near as good as the stock factory nav that is in my friends acura.

Additionally , i just had this unit stolen out of my car......so i just want to give a heads up to anyone thinking about buying it. The fact that this thing has a touch screen in plain sight and cant be hidden in anyway is just a magnet for theives , especially if you have a nice car its doubly bad.It only took this guy a couple of seconds to steal it , he was in and out. If i had to do it all over again , and i do ! I would get a system that hides away in the dash and at least removes some of the temptations for theives......
Insurance doesnt cover anything for aftermarket stuff btw.......i ended up with about 500 for the loss of my avic

OK NAV, Terrible IPOD and Sirius interface

Written By spamryan, San Francisco, CA on Monday, February 13, 2006

Well this thing has a couple pluses, but mainly minuses. If you get it for just the NAV, I would give it a B. It doesn't work as well as the NAV in my Range Rover or my Magellan 700, but it does OK.
If you are thinking about using the IPOD adapter, or Sirius, please DON'T BUY THIS. The IPOD interface is a bad joke and is totally unusable. It cuts off your playlists and doesn't give the names of the songs.much less the artist etc. I really can't explain what they must have been thinking.
The Sirius interface is almost as bad, but it does give you the song playing.
The unit does look very factory and the screen is clear. Other than that.please keep looking.. I wish I did.

Great Product

Written By William, Long Island, NY on Monday, January 23, 2006

This thing works as advertised. Gives great directions, sounds great as a stereo and looks great as a direct replacement to the factory stereo in my Sequoia.
I got it with the 6 disc changer (which I hardly use) and XM radio.
XM is great, but I'm very disappointed with the Nav Traffic. When I'm sitting in the worst possible traffic it offers no alternate routes. When everything is moving fine it has a whole list of routes. I'm sure its just poor luck on my part though.
Getting back to the unit itself, the screen is great and it can handle just about everything. I do wish they had a remote for it though as not everything can be done from the steering wheel and I hate having to keep pressing a button on the screen while I'm driving to do such tasks as switch discs in the changer or change the source or switch between map view and the XM screen. I've gotten used to using remotes in my cars and although Pioneer offers remotes that will work with it, the majority of the buttons will not work with this unit since it is touch screen.
I've also really gotten a lot of use out of it because it plays MP3 discs. Who needs an Ipod when I can just throw 200 songs on a CDR. I just keep about 5 of them in the truck and switch them depending on what I'm in the mood to listen too.

Not a bad system, but could be better

Written By AC, Bay Area, CA on Monday, January 23, 2006

I have a solution for people who complaints the absence of mute/att button. Assuming your head unit is not hooked up with an AV like a dvd player, pushing the SRC (source) button (while you are listening CD or radio) to choose the AV input then you just got yourself a moment of silence.

However, my rip for this unit are:
1. During the random mode, if I want to skip to the next song, I suppose to push the >> (next) button then the HU will scramble all songs from all folders in the disc then select one for you. Too bad, this Pioneer will give you the very next song in the same folder regardless you are in the random mode for the entire disc.
2. I do want to see a graphical spectrum analyzer for the musical effect. I found it is very boring to have such a huge screen but not able to animate the music.

The rest of problem are very tiny to me, I think every HU will have its own problems just like this one. However, I do give a recommendation to this unit because it is very good deal considering it gives you a very decent NAV function and sound quality, Not to mention that the vehicular dynamic readout mode (angular acc, voltage, velocity, etc.) is very cool and I did hooked up an dvd player to the head unit so the passengers can watch movies while driving.

Written By Ivory, Babylon, NY on Tuesday, January 03, 2006

I recently purchased this unit and I was presently suprized with it's performance. The screen is absolutely beautifull and the navigation and audio features are very easy to understand and use. Now for 2 small complaints: 1)no mute button on the radio. 2) should have a direct interface hookup with a mp3 player, not having to buy any special adapters. With that said I would definately recommend this unit and purchase it with xm/radio and Nav traffic.

ugh..

Pioneer should stick to making DVD players or TVs, this unit took the strangest routes and wanted to take me only via major routes. Ipod integration is bad, XM traffic was nice, but sometimes it would tell me there was a problem up a head and it wouldnt even display on the map.
Get the Alpine D310 with the NVE 875a, you will be much happier, and the unit actually works!

Great system, but not perfect

Written By Mattdude, Jacksonville, FL on Sunday, November 20, 2005

I've had the AVIC in the Audi for about 2 weeks now, and it's fantastic! The NAV system is very fast, and with 11 million POI's, it's got every resturant and gas station around you; not to mention the screen is BEAUTIFUL! There are 2 big problems with the unit (why I didn't give it 5 stars). 1- the CD player! Every CD I have skips in this unit, but plays in every other CD player that I own; and the FF and REW functions are very choppy and at full volume. Most players attenuate the volume to about 3/4 when FF'ing so if you have subwoofers, the system doesn't thump as it FFs. 2- there is no MUTE/ATT button anywhere. SOOOO, if your phone rings, or you go through the drive through, you have to a) go flip to the CD funtion screen and pause the CD, or b) hold the volume button down till you can hear yourself think, and without a rotory knob, the volume control is very slow, so there's no convienient way to turn the vol. down. A remote would be nice, since it would probably have a mute button.
There are lots of other hidden features of this unit that make it very cool. Like someone else said above, though, if you can import your own pictures on one model (AVIC-N2) why not on another one? (AVIC-D1)

Pioneer AVIC-D1

Written By EJ, New Jersey on Wednesday, November 02, 2005

The control lock-out features while moving is very inconvenient especially when a passenger is at the controls! This feature alone would have prevented me from buying the unit if I had known.

The routing makes sense only about 50% of the time leaving me to question any route provide by the unit.

Installing the unit in my 02 'Honda Accord required custom work which could have been addressed by better design. A couple extra holes in the bracket fixed the problem - Pioneer's job, not mine.

I bought the iPod controller and returned it. It seems no usability studies were conducted prior to design and release - it was likely rushed to market to compete with Alpine. The device is useless; the delay in controls is intolerance. It's almost like it was designed to keep the driver's focus off the road, fiddling with the touch screen. The integration with the 6.5" screen is horrible.

Good thing the Sirius service itself is great because the pioneer Sirius receiver is a joke. I have a 6.5" color screen and I only get a 10 character scrolling display. Presets do not store the channel name, just preset 1-6. Again, the integration with the 6.5" screen is horrible.

It's been over a month since registering and I have not received my update discs as promised.

Fantastic

Written By Jason, Clearwater, FL on Saturday, October 22, 2005

I purchased the AVIC-D1 and the GEX-P10XMT with XM NavTraffic for my 2004 Ford Mustang and it's fantastic.

It fits the dash perfectly, even when Crutchfield said it would not fit.

Make sure you activate XM NavTraffic or install the 1.2 Software update after you register. Otherwise you will get a full screen message saying "XM UPDATING PLEASE WAIT" that will not go away unless you activate NavTraffic, disconnect the XM Data Cable or install Software 1.2.

The XM Radio screen is nice, it shows the XM Logo's and the full artist/title names. The navigation is great too. It calculates the route in less then 3 seconds and is very acurate. The only complaint I have is the full screen "warning" when you turn your car on.

The Vehicle Dynamics screen is really cool to impress your friends.

I would highly reccomend the D1 and NavTraffic (if it's in your area).

Great NAV system

Written By Stephen, Texas on Tuesday, October 18, 2005

Pros: This is a very nice NAV system. Installation was super easy as long as you know where to find your wiring for parking brake, reverse, and VSS for speed. I knew those prior so it was a breeze to install, especially with the crutchfield kit. The sound quality and builtin power are very good. For the discounted price this is a good buy.

Cons: I don't like that it always presents the NAG screen the first time you switch to Map. The message is red letters on a bright grey background and it's bright and you have to touch OK for it to go away.... every time. I also don't like the startup time for the unit but it's not too bad. You have to wait about 10 sec for it, so if you startup and go reverse it won't show your backup camera until it had finished booting. I also don't like that they didn't include any graphics enhancements like a spectrum analyzer or something to make better use of the screen.
