Disc Compatibility

Multi-format Compatibility: The Pioneer BDP-430 supports a number of disc formats, including the following.

Disc Type Disc Description
Blu-ray BD-ROM, BD-RE (ver.2.1), BD-R (ver.1.1/1.2/1.3)
DVD DVD-Video, DVD-R (DL), DVD-RW, DVD+R (DL), DVD+RW
CD CD-Audio, CD-R, CD-RW

Blu-ray Disc Overview: Blu-ray Disc (BD) is a new high-definition disc format designed to take advantage of today's high quality HDTVs. The resolution is up to 1920 x 1080 (1080p) and the data transfer rate is up to 54 mbps. Blu-ray Disc discs and players offer several advantages over the standard DVD format:

  • Better Picture Quality: Blu-ray Disc is a true high-definition format offering video at 720p, 1080i, or 1080p resolution. While standard DVDs look very good on an HDTV, they don't provide a high-definition signal (not even when you use an up-converting DVD player). Blu-ray Disc delivers an extraordinarily sharp, clean, detailed picture, with deeper, richer colors.
  • Better Sound Quality: In addition to the same multi-channel sound formats you're accustomed to with DVD (Dolby Digital and DTS), Blu-ray Disc offers Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Digital Plus, DTS-HD Master Audio, DTS-HD High Resolution, and uncompressed 7.1 channel PCM.
  • Much Greater Storage Capacity: What makes Blu-ray Disc's superior picture and sound possible is the much higher storage capacity of Blu-ray Disc discs. A single-layer Blu-ray Disc can hold 25 gigabytes of data, over five times the amount a standard DVD can hold. Dual-layer Blu-ray Discs hold 50 gigabytes, which equates to nine hours of High Definition or 23 hours of Standard Definition video, plus high-resolution multi-channel audio and the added features and material that require multiple discs with standard DVD.
  • Backward Compatible: To ensure backward-compatibility with your existing library of discs, Blu-ray Disc players use a dual-laser mechanism: a blue laser for playing high-definition Blu-ray Discs, and a conventional red laser for playing DVDs and audio CDs.

Note: Like DVD, BD uses region codes. The region code on your disc must match the region code on your player, otherwise the disc will not play. The player is Blu-ray region A and DVD region 1. Blu-ray Disc uses the Advanced Access Content System (AACS) to prevent unauthorized recording of copyrighted material.

Firmware Updates: As Blu-Ray technology continues to evolve, new disc types with enhanced functionality will become available. In order for you to enjoy this new functionality, you will likely be required to update the firmware in your player. These firmware updates will become available for downloading from the Internet via the rear panel Ethernet terminal. Auto Firmware Notification automatically notifies you of firmware updates when they become available. Simply download them via the Ethernet connection (or wireless, if enabled).

Note:  The unit tested contained firmware version - PC11022801.  Go to http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/PUSA/Home/Blu-ray-Disc-and-DVD/Pioneer-Blu-ray-Disc-Players/BDP-430 for the latest firmware update.

AVCHD Compatible: AVCHD (MPEG-4 AVC/H.264) is a high definition digital video camera format used to record in high definition or standard definition on DVD, using an efficient data compression coding technology. The format is designed to compress video and audio (Dolby Digital or Linear PCM) data, enabling a high definition video signal shot on a digital video camera recorder to be recorded on DVD discs, in the same way as it would be for a standard definition signal.

MKV Compatible: MKV is a file format allowing multiple audio and video files to be held in a single file. This player can support up to 1280 x 720 MKV audio/video files recorded onto BD-R/RE, DVD-R/RW, DVD+RW, and CD-R/RW discs.

DivX Compatible: The Pioneer supports DivX playback from BD-R/RE, DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW, and CD-R/RW discs. DivXcompresses lengthy video segments into small sizes while maintaining relatively high visual quality. The unit supports DivX video with a resolution up to 1920 x 1080 pixels.

WMV Playback: WMV files recorded onto BD-R/RE, DVD-R/RW, DVD+RW, and CD-R/RW discs are supported; files must be encoded using the Windows Media Encoder 9 series. This unit supports WMV files with a resolution up to 1280 x 720.

MP3/WMA Playback: The Pioneer BDP-430 supports MP3/WMA audio file playback from CD-R/RW, DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW, and BD-R discs. MP3/WMA audio files with a bit-rate of up to 320k kbps are supported (128kbps or greater recommended).

JPEG Playback: The Pioneer 3D Blu-ray disc player supports playback of JPEG still image files recorded onto CD-R/RW, DVD-R/RW, and DVD+R/RW discs. JPEG images with a resolution of up to 4,000 x 3,000 pixels (24-bits) are supported.

Video Features

Video Outputs: The Pioneer BDP-430 Blu-ray player is equipped with two High Definition video outputs (HDMI, Component) and one standard definition video output (composite).

  • HDMI: The Pioneer 3D Blu-ray player is equipped with an HDMI (v.1.4) output. HDMI simplifies A/V connections by carrying video and digital audio all in one cable. The HDMI output resolution can be set to 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i or 1080p when playing a DVD or Blu-ray Disc; also 1080/24p when playing a compatible BD.
  • Component: The Pioneer Blu-ray disc player features a single component video output. When playing Blu-ray the resolution can be set to 480i, 480p, 720p, or 1080i; when playing DVD the resolution can be set to 480i or 480p.
  • Composite: The Blu-ray disc player also features a single composite video output. The composite video output resolution is always 480i when playing Blu-ray Disc or DVD.

True24FPS/1080p: The Pioneer BDP-430 provides up to 1920 x 1080p resolution at 24 fps for unrivaled picture quality.

3D Compatible: The BDP-430 is fully 3D-compatible with the latest HDMI 1.4a standard, so you can enjoy current and upcoming 3D content.

Note: 3D viewing requires compatible 3D content, 3D-ready HDTV, 3D emitter & glasses, and a high-speed HDMI cable (supporting at least 10.2 Gbps) connection.

DVD Upscaling: When connected to your TV using the HDMI output, the BDP-430 scales the output of a standard DVD signal to HD-compatible 720p, 1080i, or 1080p. The unit also supports 480p and 480i output if your television is not HD-compatible.

Deep Color Support: The Pioneer Blu-ray player  faithfully reproduces all the colors inherent in today's most advanced image sources, such as Blu-ray Discs and DVDs. This player supports Deep Color technology via HDMI. This technology supports higher bit rates and more color possibilities than previous HDTV signals.

x.v.Color Compatible: The Blu-ray player's x.v.Color compatibility reproduces all of the vibrant color in images recorded by wide x.v.Color gamut compatible camcorders.

BonusView: Some BD-video disc copy data to other media (local storage) and then play the secondary video, secondary audio and subtitles (sub contents) simultaneously. These functions are known as BonusView. Sub contents are automatically recorded to other media from the disc prior to playing the virtual package. Playback methods vary depending on BD-discs. This player uses its USB port along with an optional USB memory device to copy data from applicable BD-video discs.

Simultaneous HDMI & Component Video Output: You can enjoy high definition video from both the HDMI and Component Video connections (Component Video is limited to 1080i resolution).

TV Aspect Ratio: You can set the screen aspect ratio of your connected TV. You can choose from the following - 16:9 Normal, 4:3 Normal, 4:3 Letter Box, or 4:3 Pan Scan.

Audio Features

PQLS (Precision Quartz Lock System): When used with a compatible Pioneer PQLS AV receiver via HDMI, Blu-ray Discs, DVDs and CD music are precisely reproduced with minimum jitter. PQLS (Precision Quartz Lock System) is a digital audio transfer control technology using the unit's HDMI control function. The player's output signals are controlled from a compatible Pioneer AV amplifier to achieve high sound quality playback using the amplifier's quartz oscillator. This eliminates the influence of the jitter generated during signal transfer which can adversely affect the sound quality.

Dolby Digital/DTS Decoders: The Pioneer BDP-430 features internal decoding of the latest high definition audio formats, including Dolby TrueHD and dts-HD Master Audio
