Maximize the movie and music experience of your Pioneer Elite home theater setup with the company's flagship Blu-ray player, the BDP-88FD. Like their BDP-85D model, this player boasts a rigid, double-layer chassis and premium video processing. It goes a step further though, with even sturdier construction and audio capabilities that reach a higher level.

Aluminum side panels and a steel top panel provide a solid foundation and practically eliminate unwanted vibrations. The 29.5-pound BDP-88FD sports three separate chambers — one for the heavy-duty power supply, one for the digital video processing, and one for the audio circuitry. Each isolated area is framed with copper, which has been coated with anti-resonance paint. It's all designed to give you the purest sound and picture possible.

Sound true to Pioneer's recording studio roots

Pioneer engineered the BDP-88FD to make movies and music sound amazing. A large-capacity power supply transformer is mounted to a cast-iron chassis. It delivers clean, rock-solid power to boost sound performance.

High-res audio

Your music will sound natural and dynamic, thanks to the dedicated analog audio section. It includes an 8-channel audio digital-to-analog converterthe acclaimed ES9018 ESS Sabre DAC. Since not all digital audio content is encoded at the same sample rate, Pioneer added two separate crystal oscillators for both 44.1kHz- and 48kHz-based music. This optimizes the player for different types of audio files or streams, for even greater timing precision.

Bring on any disc, file, or format

The BDP-88FD handles high-resolution discs and lossless FLAC files from a thumb drive or external hard drive. You'll find both front and rear USB ports. Connect to your home network via Ethernet, and you can play tunes from compatible networked PC or smartphone via DLNA. You can even use the audio direct feature to shut off video circuitry, minimizing interference when you're listening to music.

When you're watching a movie, The BDP-88FD has built-in support for the highest-quality surround sound formats, like Dolby® TrueHD and DTS Master Audio™. It also plays Dolby Atmos®-encoded discs (just set the HDMI audio output to "bitstream" when connected to one of the Pioneer Elite Atmos-capable receivers).

Make the most of your TV or projector's display

Of course, your movies will look spectacular too. Pioneer's video engine, called their "Precise Pixel Driver," features an advanced 4K upconverter. 1080p content goes in, and 4K Utra HD resolution comes out at 60 frames per second. In other words, it can deliver maximum picture quality with the finest Ultra HD TVs on the market. If you don't have a 4K TV just yet, no worries. The advanced Qdeo™ video processor makes sure your movies look their best on your current screen.

Smooth streaming and speedy scanning

Pioneer's Stream Smoother feature cleans up YouTube® clips and other Internet videos, while optimizing them for larger screens. (This player connects to your home network via a wired Ethernet connection.) Streamed content also runs through the same video processor as discs, helping it look its best. Plus you can scan through Blu-ray discs rapidly — the "1.5x View Scan" function breezes past boring scenes and keeps voices intelligible, so you can get right to the good part.

Push your phone display to the big screen

Phone screens keep growing in size, but some activities call for "the big picture." Maybe you want to share a video or photo with a group of people. Wirelessly "push" the display to your TV's big screen. Miracast™ technology mirrors the screen of your compatible mobile device, tablet, or computer screen for everyone to see. The BDP-88FD also works with YouTube's "Send to TV" feature. Push a button on your mobile device to send YouTube clips right to your TV.

Easy control with your smartphone or tablet

Download the free iControlAV5 app to your smartphone or tablet for touchscreen control of this player's basic features. The app is available for Apple or Android™ devices. If you have an Elite receiver in the mix, you can control it with the same device too.

Dual HDMI 2.0 Outputs: The Pioneer Elite Blu-ray player is equipped with dual HDMI 2.0 outputs for separating audio and video signals. HDMI simplifies A/V connections by carrying video and digital audio all in one cable. You can choose to use the dual HDMI outputs to send video only to your HDTV and audio only to your A/V receiver, or output audio/video to two separate TVs. The HDMI output resolution can be set to 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i, 1080p, 4K, or Source Direct. HDMI output mode settings:

  • Dual: Video and audio are output simultaneously from the two HDMI out terminals. Select this mode when you want to output audio/video to two different TVs simultaneously (the same source will be output to both TVs)
  • Separate: Select this mode when you want to output the video and audio separately; the video from the HDMI Out (Main) terminal and the audio from the HDMI Out (Sub terminal).
  • Pure Audio: Select this to enjoy music only with a better sound quality when devices are connected to both HDMI output terminals. With this setting, music is output from the HDMI Out (Sub) terminal only, and video signals are only output from the HDMI Out (Main) terminal when the remote's "Display" button is pressed.
  • Single: This mode should be selected when connecting a device (TV, Receiver, etc.) with the HDMI Out (Main) terminal and transmitting both audio/video via a single HDMI cable.
Note: This player does not offer any analog video outputs.

Qdeo High-Quality Video Processor: The BDP-88FD Elite Blu-ray player incorporates Marvell's award-winning Qdeo video processing technology to deliver consistently high-quality video despite the source. At the core of Marvell's digital entertainment processors, Qdeo uses a suite of "quiet video" technologies to produce video at up to full high-definition 1080p resolution with superb clarity and accuracy. Conventional video processing can actually produce noise and distortion that are distracting on today's high-quality displays. With Qdeo, video is rendered clearer and more natural, without the typical noise and artifacts. Qdeo video processing can be classified into three main stages:

  • Noise Reduction: Most video material contains analog and/or digital noise. Noise Reduction refers to the process of reducing this noise while minimizing any side-effects. 3D per-pixel motion-adaptive Video Noise Reduction (VNR) completely removes flickering dots from a stationary background and in moving areas without causing side-effects like blurring, ghosting (double imaging) or loss of detail. Per-pixel content-adaptive Compression Artifact Reduction (CAR) removes the block and mosquito noise without causing side-effects like blurring or loss of detail.
  • Format Conversion: Most video material needs to be converted from its original resolution to match the native resolution of the display. 3D per-pixel motion and edge adaptive de-interlacing produces full-resolution in regions where there is no motion and smooth and clean edges for moving objects. Vector Interpolation calculates the direction of the edge to interpolate in that direction, thereby rendering a smooth image without objectionable jagged edges. Qdeo Film Mode does inverse telecine of the film-originated material by identifying the correct film cadence and weaving together the appropriate fields. In addition, Qdeo de-interlacing is able to correctly identify video and film material when they are mixed together (as sometimes occurs in broadcast TV) and handles the content appropriately to avoid the introduction of feathering artifacts in the video content.
  • Enhancement: Qdeo enhancement is the process of enhancing the appearance of the image by improving the contrast, bringing out the detail, making the colors more vivid, and creating a greater sense of depth. These enhancements can be done once the inherent noise is removed and the image has been converted to the desired display format. Adaptive Contrast Enhancement (ACE) expands details in the shadows without crushing the mid-tones or highlights. Intelligent Color Remapping (ICR) enables vivid colors in outdoor scenes without causing hue shifts or loss of detail or changes in skin tones. It provides the ability to enhance certain colors in the spectrum while leaving other colors untouched. And Natural Depth Expansion (NDE) brings out fine details in textured regions like walls and grass and sharpens boundaries of objects like windows and grills, without introducing side-effects like halos and ringing.

4K Upscaling: The BDP-88FD Elite Blu-ray player reproduces exceptional 4K video quality by utilizing Pioneer's new advanced video engine consisting of the Precise Pixel Driver image processor and Pioneer's new 4K Reference Converter that upscale existing disc-based or network content to Ultra HD 4K resolution (4K/60P/4:4:4/24-bit) providing the finest picture quality possible when used with a compatible display. The upscaled video is output via HDMI 2.0 utilizing its full 18GBPS bandwidth.

Note: To enjoy 4K, you must have a compatible 4K television.

24p Output: Movies are typically recorded on film with a frame rate of 24 frames per second. When a movie is transferred to Blu-ray Disc at 24 frames per second the BDP-88FD will output that signal to the TV (if the TV will accept the 1080p/24 format) with no need for conversion.

3D-Ready: The Pioneer BDP-88FD lets you enjoy 3D Blu-ray disc movies in full HD 1080p. 3D viewing requires compatible 3D content, 3D-ready HDTV, 3D emitter and glasses, and a high-speed HDMI cable (supporting at least 10.2 Gbps) connection.

Deep/x.v. Color: The Pioneer Blu-ray player  faithfully reproduces all the colors inherent in today's most advanced image sources, such as Blu-ray Discs and DVDs. This player supports Deep Color technology via HDMI. This technology supports higher bit rates and more color possibilities than previous HDTV signals. The Blu-ray player's x.v.Color compatibility reproduces all of the vibrant color in images recorded by wide x.v.Color gamut compatible camcorders.

Stream Smoother Link: Stream Smoother Link is a function that improves picture quality of network video contents over HDMI. The Stream Smoother Link will enhance lower bit-rate content and reduce picture distortion. The Stream Smoother Link function allows you to enjoy a high quality picture with less noise.

Zero Signal Terminal: The BDP-88FD features a Zero Signal Terminal providing a reference ground for audio/video signals. When connected to a compatible display or AV receiver, the ground potential between the two devices is minimized resulting in a more accurate signal transmission.

Video Settings: The Pioneer Elite Blu-ray player also offers the following video settings.

  • TV Aspect Ratio: You can set the screen aspect ratio of your connected TV. You can choose from the following - 16:9 Normal, 16:9 Full, 4:3 Letter Box, or 4:3 Pan Scan.
  • Video Adjust: Choose between four video presets (Digital Cinema/Film Cinema/Live/Reference) or use the Custom (1-3) setting to manually adjust the Blu-ray player's video output. The Custom setting lets you manually adjust the player's Detail, Brightness, Contrast, Hue, Chroma Level, and Super Resolution.
  • Noise Reduction: The Blu-ray player provides Luminance (YNR), Chroma (CNR), Block (BNR), and Mosquito (MNR) noise reduction.
  • Progressive Motion: Adjusts the motion and still picture quality when video output is set to progressive.
  • Pure Cinema: This setting optimizes the operation of the progressive scanning circuit for playing film materials.
  • Film Grain: This feature adds small particles of noise to give the effect of a movie film.

BonusView: The BonusView feature provides picture-in-picture capability with select Blu-ray Disc titles. You can view addition content (such as director/actor commentary) in a small display window while the movie is playing.

Digital & Analog Audio Outputs: The Pioneer BDP-88FD is equipped with a coaxial (RCA) and optical (toslink) digital output which support Dolby Digital, DTS, and 2-channel PCM soundtracks. The Blu-ray also has a set of gold-plated unbalanced stereo analog outputs and a pair of balanced XLR analog outputs.

Direct Function Circuit: The BDP-88FD also feature a "Direct Function Circuit" for use in pure analog audio playback mode shutting off all video circuits and dedicating the processing power to the audio components.

Jitter Reduction: The Pioneer Elite BDP-88FD employs PQLS and a Precision Audio feature to prevent jitter and maximize signal transfer for the best overall audio performance.

  • PQLS (Precision Quartz Lock System): PQLS (Precision Quartz Lock System) is a digital audio signal transfer control technology using the HDMI Control function. The player's output signals are controlled from the compatible Pioneer Elite AV receiver to achieve high sound quality playback using the compatible receiver's quartz oscillator. This enables removing jitter that has a negative effect on the quality of the sound and is generated upon transmission.
  • Precision Audio: Jitter, which detrimentally affects sound quality, occurs when the transmission or processing of digital signals is performed. The effects of such jitter can be eliminated by processing signals with reference to a crystal oscillator, which is optimally suited to act as a standard for audio signals. Precision Audio is a function and technology which helps to eliminate jitter and improve sound quality.

Auto Sound Retriever + Sound Retriever Link: With the Auto Sound Retriever function, digital signal processing is used to compensate for the loss of audio data upon compression improving the sound's sense of density and modulations.  Sound Retriever Link is a sound quality correction control technology that automatically adjusts compressed soundtracks for a higher quality sound over HDMI.

Audio Delay & Sync: Some TVs have a slight delay when showing video, so the soundtrack will be slight out of sync with the picture. By adding a bit of delay (0-200ms), you can adjust the sound to match the presentation of the video. The player will automatically adjust the time of the video and audio when connected via HDMI.

Dynamic Range Control: You can activate the Dynamic Range Control (DRC) function to compress the dynamic range of the output signals when playing back DVD/BD recorded in Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus, or Dolby TrueHD.

Convenience Features

On-Screen Display: The Pioneer Elite Blu-ray player provides an OSD via its HDMI output. The on-screen text can be set to English, French, or Spanish. The unit also features a front-panel display.

Start Up & Playback Times: The Pioneer Elite Blu-ray player has a start-up time of approximately 21.5 seconds and a playback time of approximately 33.7 seconds.

Note: The Start Up/Playback Time tests were started with the Blu-ray player initially turned off and in standby mode. The Start Up Time test was stopped when the player displayed "no disc" and the on-screen menu displayed the "Pioneer" logo. The Playback Time test was stopped when the Blu-ray disc began playback.

Program Play + Bookmarks: The Pioneer Blu-ray player allows you to program playback order of audio disc tracks or DVD chapters. You can program up to 15 tracks/chapters. The Blu-ray player also allows you to set Bookmarks at specified points of a DVD video. After a Bookmark is set, you can move to the point you set a lot quicker. You can set up to 12 Bookmarks.

Title + Time Search: You can skip directly to the start of a title, chapter, or track by using the remote's numeric keypad (0-9). Or, you can use the numeric keypad on the remote to start playback from a specified time on a disc.

Quick View: The new 1.5x Quick View with Audio function is a very convenient feature that allows you to scan the contents of a Blu-ray or DVD disc, while the audio is still understandable. This makes it easy to locate the part of the program you want to watch.

Resume Playback: You can set whether this player remembers the last playback position of a disc when it is set to standby mode or the disc tray is opened.

Parental Control: Parental Control allows you to set a rating limit based on the age of the viewer (Kid Safe, G, PG, PG-13, PGR, R, NC-17, Adult, and Off), preventing your children from viewing inappropriate material. Playback will stop if the ratings exceed the level you set, and it will require your to enter a 4-digit password before the disc will play back.

Screen Saver + Auto Standby: The screen saver image appears when there is no video signal and you do not use the player for more than 1, 2, or 3 minutes. In addition, the power will automatically turn off if there is no video signal and no operation has been performed for more than 10, 20, or 30 minutes.

Remote Control

Wireless Remote Control: The Pioneer Elite BDP-88FD comes supplied with an IR remote control for wireless operation of the Blu-ray player, select televisions (via preset codes), and HDMI-CEC connected components.

HDMI Control (HDMI-CEC): When a TV and/or AV receiver supporting HDMI-CEC are connected to the Pioneer Blu-ray player via HDMI, it is possible to use one remote to control to perform system operations.

  • Playback Control: Some of the player's operations such as starting and stopping playback and displaying menus can be performed from your HDMI-CEC compatible TV.
  • Auto Select Function: The input switches automatically on the TV and AV system when playback is started on the Blu-ray player.
  • Power On/Off: Your TV and Blu-ray player turn on simultaneously from the power button on the Blu-ray player or TV's remote control.

iControlAV5 App: Download Pioneer's free iControlAV5 App (from the Apple App Store or GooglePlay Store) onto your Apple iOS or Android device for control of the Blu-ray player from your smartphone or tablet device. You'll be able controls basic playback functions such as Play, Stop, Forward, and Reverse.
