Our take on the Pioneer CD-iU50 iPod Connection Cable

by Ken Nail
Pioneer

Why would I need an iPod® adapter?

An iPod adapter allows you to connect your iPod to your car stereo, then access your playlists with your stereo's controls - a great idea for several reasons. One, you can scroll through your song titles on your stereo's larger display, instead of squinting down at your iPod. Two, you can route the adapter cable to your glove compartment or center console, so your iPod stays safely out of sight. Three, the iPod adapter keeps your iPod fully charged, so it's ready to rock when you leave your car. And last of all, some adapters bypass your iPod's internal digital-to-analog converter, using your stereo's superior DAC to turn your files back into music.

Use the optional CD-iU50 cable to connect your iPod to select Pioneer stereos with "uBus" USB control. You can leave your original iPod USB cable in the house, and keep the CD-iU50 cable in your car at all times. This cable only supports audio playback — it will not transfer video to your receiver. Warranty: 1 year.

Compatibility Note: Be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this iPod adapter.

Note: Apple iPod/iPhone software updates may change functionality results. If you download a newer software version, you may need to reset the head unit and your iPod/iPhone to regain functionality. If this doesn't work, you may need to revert to the older software version or wait until a newer software update is available.

Connector Cover: The dock connector end of the cable has an attached cover to protect the connector from dirt or damage.

Piece of Junk

Written By PeterH, Jacksonville on Monday, January 30, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This cable did not work well at all. The cable is too stiff and the connector was flaky. Because the cable was stiff, if the iTouch or iPhone moved, the connection would disconnect and reconnect making it nearly unusable. Replaced it with a $$ Apple cable and all is well.

Product is fine, however, the cap that covers the one end is cheaply made. Will not stay
on . It is made of a very thin plastic. It should be made of rubber so it would stay on the
plug better.

Nicest iPod cable I ever had - but that all it is!

Written By Anonymous, Portland, OR on Friday, January 29, 2010

Its a nice, strudy iPod cable with a dust cap on the iPod adapter. But thats all it is! If it were not free with my stereo I would be pretty angry about the price! You can use any USB iPod cable with an iPod compatible Pioneer that connects by USB...

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a great product but pretty short if you are installing a receiver in your car. I had to get an extension in order for the cord to be long enough to fit into my ipod which I hold in a cupholder mount just below the receiver. I was lucky enough that my installer had a short USB extension and he put it in without me being aware that I needed one. It functions just as advertized.

You get exactly what is in the description...

Written By Chad, Gadsden, Alabama on Friday, October 24, 2008

The item description clearly states exactly what you will receive...it tells you that the adapter is just like the OEM one that comes with your iPod, but this cable allows you to use it in your car, while leaving and using the OEM cable at home...that way, you don't have to constantly switch-out the cables. And since most head-units have the USB socket in the rear, you only want to have to hook the cable up once.

Now...if you need a longer cable, all you have to do is either go buy a simple USB extension-cable, or go buy a simple male/female-cable in whatever length you need.

Ehh its a cable

Written By Chad, Lakeport, Ca on Tuesday, October 14, 2008

yeah it works fine, even for my Ipod touch. But im not too happy spending this much for it really. But, with my P4000UB pioneer stereo, it makes my life a whole lot easier.

Pioneer CD-iU50 iPod Connection Cable

Written By Brian, Garner, NC on Sunday, August 17, 2008
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It's a cable, it either works or it doesn't. I have eyes and can see the picture, and have enough education to be able to read so I know that it's just an iPod to USB cable and wasn't expecting anything more. If anything I would have wanted less cable. I routed the cable into the cubby under the stereo and just plug the iPod in there.

USB-iPod Dock cable comes up short

Written By Jack, Bridgewater, MA on Wednesday, February 27, 2008
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I ordered this cable to use as a permanent installation component for a new double-DIN (still on backorder) Pioneer in-dash car receiver with the USB port on the BACK. This cable is less than 2 feet long (based on rough estimate, since I'll probably return it and therefore did not open the package). It's is at least a foot shorter than the docking cable that came with my iPod. For $30 I was expecting a bit more.

As a practical matter, I'm wondering how I would be able to reach the end of this cable to plug in to the iPod, unless I plan to have it dangling down near the gas pedal somewhere. Definitely not a good fit for my installation. Information about the length of this item in the "hands on research" section would have been very useful.

Not bad, but $30?

Written By Dr. Mark, Sioux Falls, SD on Monday, February 25, 2008
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this thinking it would be a special cable to hook my iPod up to my new Pioneer stereo. It's just the same as the cable that came with my iPod, except it doesn't seem as sturdy.
