Pioneer

Our take on the Pioneer CDRB20

The Pioneer CDRB20 adapter allows you to add an auxiliary input to your Pioneer changer-controlling receiver and retain the use of your Pioneer CD changer. The CDRB20 accepts your IP-Bus changer cable and a patch cable from your auxiliary source (cassette, MP3, Minidisc, etc.) and allows your Pioneer receiver to play back either source. The auxiliary source must have a volume control or an output voltage of 1 volt or less. 1-year warranty.

Details:
  • aux in stereo RCA inputs
  • P-Bus input and output with a 36" IP-Bus cable to connect to the receiver
  • 3-1/2"W x 1-3/16"H x 5"D

Features

Overview: This unit allows you to input any device with RCA outputs, plus retain the P-Bus connection on any Pioneer head unit with an IP-Bus connection.

Connections: The unit has the following inputs and outputs:

  • Attached P-Bus output which is attached to the P-Bus of the head unit
  • A blue P-Bus input where the P-Bus component is connected (if one is being used)
  • One set of left and right RCA inputs to connect another unit, such as a portable satellite radio receiver or MP3 player.

Important Notes:

  • The device connected to the RCA ins must either have an output voltage of 1 volt or less OR have a volume control so its output can be lowered. With an input voltage greater than 1 volt, this unit will pass distorted audio and/or be damaged.
  • If the IP-Bus component and the source connected to the RCA inputs are played simultaneously, output from both will be heard, so only one source should be playing at a time. The head unit will not turn the power to the auxiliary source on/off, so that unit will have to be turned on/off manually.

Fixing the sound output over-lapping...

Written By Chad, Gadsden, Alabama on Friday, October 24, 2008

As it has been said below, there is a very easy method of fixing the little
problem of both inputs/outputs playing at the same time, and it will literally
only take you a second! If you want to listen to one output, simply turn the
other one off...it's as simple as that!

If you have an iPod on one, and XM on the other, just power-off the iPod
to listen to XM or power-off the XM to listen to the iPod.

   Seriously, it's THAT easy!

Pioneer CDRB20

Written By Brian, Seattle, WA on Thursday, June 02, 2005

Well, I can't complain too much because this unit does what it claims to do. I use this to control my iPod and an XM radio tuner through a Pioneer head unit. I don't have a CD changer. That said, it's really annoying that both input sources are passed through at the same time. In other words, the audio of the iPod and the XM radio are overlapped.

I'm going to have to either manually rig a switch to cut the power to the XM tuner when I want to play the iPod, or rig up a relay to do this automatically. This seems like a design flaw.

Same complaint as above, but a decent workaround is to tune your XM to channel "0" (the unit ID channel). Because it is a silent channel, it won't interfere with your auxilary. Be aware that at least on my radio it won't let you select XM channel "0" as a preset.

Having read the reviews that state the AUX input plays simultaneously to the other inputs, I was a bit worried. Thankfully, that's only partially true. I'm using the CDRB20 as an iPod aux in and I also have the SIRPNR1 Sirius tuner. The CRB20 works as it should when Aux is selected. Only the iPod is audible. When I select the Sirius source, I can hear them both, but all I have to do is turn off the iPod and then I only hear Sirius. Not a big deal. This works for adding an aux on older decks. At least with the Sirius tuner it does.

I installed this unit in my boat last spring (2005) which has a 12 disk CD changer. I had the same problems as the others have mentioned - the CD changer playing at the same time as the IPOD. It would work great if you just have a head unit without satellite radio or CD Changer.

I ended up returning mine. I decided that I'd wait and replace the head unit in a year or two with one that can control the IPOD versus just accepting the input.
