Pioneer

Our take on the Pioneer DEH-33HD

Pioneer puts HD Radio™ right where you want it — built into the tuner of the DEH-33HD CD receiver. You'll enjoy the unparalleled sound quality and extra features that distinguish HD Radio from regular broadcasts. And this stylish receiver covers almost every other base in the digital media ballpark too, with simple controls that can whip through your music files and menus in a flash.

HD Radio sounds better
You'll hear the difference when you tune in a station that's broadcasting HD Radio signals — FM broadcasts approach CD-quality sound, with no static or audio distortion. But that's just part of the story. You'll also have access to the additional programming offered on the extra channels broadcast by HD Radio stations, choices that aren't available to regular radio listeners.

Great versatility
The DEH-33HD also includes auxiliary and USB inputs on its front panel, so you can enjoy your music from a variety of sources. And it's compatible with your iPod and iPhone — just plug them into the USB port for direct control.

Pioneer's famed MOSFET amplifier delivers high-fidelity performance with plenty of "real world" power. You'll experience better sound when you listen to your MP3 and WMA files, as the Advanced Sound Retriever reverses the compression process to add back some of the sonic info that's lost in the digital conversion.

Note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver.

Display Features

Detachable Face Security: This unit features Detachable Face Security. A face-fixing screw is supplied for making the face non-detachable, if desired.

Note: No face case is included with this unit. An optional soft face case (142DFC1X, sold separately) can be purchased for this unit.

White OEL Display: The DEH-33HD features a bright white OEL Display (1-line/10-Character) that can display upper- and lower-case characters. This display makes it easy to read and cycle through song titles, artists, and other texts.

Ever Scroll: When the Ever Scroll feature is set to On, recorded text information scrolls continuously on the display. It will auto-scroll up to 64 characters. Set this feature to Off if you prefer the information to scroll only once.

Display Illumination/Clock Display: When the Clock Display has been turned on, pressing and holding the Source button turns off audio output, but the clock display remains on. When the Clock Display has been turned off, pressing and holding the source button turns the unit off completely. Even if you have turned the radio completely off you can view the clock display by pressing the clock button. The clock will then remain On until you turn it back Off. When the unit is On you can select between the clock display or the audio track/tuner display.

Audio Section

MOSFET Amplifier: The DEH-33HD is equipped with a MOSFET amplifier. Compared to conventional power supplies, the MOSFET amplification circuit is smaller and more efficient, and it delivers increased power with less distortion and absolutely zero on/off switching noise. More power means louder and cleaner music at higher volumes because you're not pushing the limits of the amplification circuit.

CEA2006 Compliant: The power specifications for the DEH-33HD are compliant with the CEA2006 Mobile Amplifier Power Testing and Measurement standards from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). These standards were developed as a way to equitably compare power specs from model to model and between manufacturers. The power output specs for the DEH-33HD are as follows:

  • CEA2006 Specs: 14 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20Hz-20kHz, 1% THD-N)
  • Continuous Power Output: 22 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 50Hz-15kHz, 5% THD)
  • Maximum Power Output: 50 watts x 4 channels (or 50 watts x 2 channels at 4 ohms + 70 watts x 1 channel at 2 ohms for subwoofer)

3-Way Rotary Commander: The Pioneer DEH-33HD features a 3-Way Rotary Commander for easy control. You can scroll through your music and audio settings with greater ease using the 3-way rotary commander.

Sound Retriever: The Sound Retriever automatically enhances compressed audio and restores the original richness of the recording. When Sound Retriever is on, the high frequency range is compensated to match the frequency response curve to the original sound. There are two available levels of the Sound Retriever effect.

EEQ (Easy EQ): The DEH-33HD is equipped with a 3-band EQ with 6 preset EQ settings: Powerful, Dynamic, Vocal, Natural, Custom, and EQ Flat. The Custom band can be adjusted as follows:

  • Bass: +/- 6dB at 100 Hz
  • Mid: +/- 6dB at 1 kHz
  • Treble: +/- 6dB at 10 kHz

Loudness: The Loudness feature compensates for deficiencies in the low and high sound ranges at low volume. You can set the Loudness feature to Low, Mid, High, or Off.

Source Level Adjustment (SLA): This function lets you adjust the volume level of each source to prevent radical changes in volume when switching between sources. Settings are based on the volume level of the FM tuner, which remains unchanged. Each source can be independently adjusted from -4dB to +4dB.

Dual 2.0-Volt Preamp Outputs: The Pioneer DEH-33HD features two pair of 2.0-volt preamp outputs (Front & Rear/SW). The unit's rear preamp output can be configured as a fading rear-channel output or a non-fading subwoofer output with a low-pass filter, phase adjustment, and output level control.

Subwoofer Controls: When the subwoofer output is activated, you can select the frequency of the 18dB/octave low pass filter (50, 63, 80, 100, or 125 Hz), select the subwoofer phase (normal/reverse), and the subwoofer gain (+6 to -24).

Switchable Rear Channel/Subwoofer Speaker Output: The rear speaker outputs can be set to provide full range output with full fading capability, or they can be set to provide non-fading subwoofer (low-pass) output. When the rear speaker outputs are set to subwoofer mode, the rear preamp outputs also switch from full range to subwoofer outputs. When set for subwoofer operation, you can connect the rear speaker leads directly to two small 4-ohm passive subwoofers or a dual voice coil sub with 4-ohm voice coils. If you prefer to use a single 2-ohm subwoofer, you can connect the woofer to one set of speaker leads, leaving the other set of rear leads disconnected. The maximum output provided when a 2-ohm load is connected to one set of leads is 70 watts.

Radio Functions

HD Radio: The Pioneer DEH-33HD's built-in HD Radio tuner lets you listen to the radio with the same fidelity as your digital music. HD Radio features high quality audio, FM multi-casting, and data services. With HD Radio, your FM stations offer near CD-quality sound, AM stations provide FM-quality sound, and there is crystal-clear reception with no audio distortion. The unit's tuner also supports analog AM/FM broadcasts.

Note: HD Radio is the system for digital AM and FM broadcasting in the U.S. More than 2,000 radio stations are broadcasting their primary signals in digital HD Radio technology, as a free service. Go to HDRadio.com to check for HD Radio stations in your area.

Multicasting: In addition to conventional broadcasts, with HD Radio broadcasting it is possible to choose from up to 3 multicast programs (HD1 to HD3, and analog). There are also data programs for each program.

RDS: The Radio Data System (RDS) feature displays radio broadcast information such as artist, title, and album when listening to compatible analog or HD AM/FM stations.

Reception Blending: If a digital broadcast reception condition gets poor, this unit automatically switches to the analog broadcast of the same frequency level. If this function is set to "On", the tuner switches between digital broadcast and analog broadcast automatically. If this function is 'Off', reception will be conducted within an analog broadcast.

BSM (Best Stations Memory): The BSM (Best Stations Memory) function lets you automatically store the six strongest analog or HD stations under preset buttons 1-6 of the currently tuned band. The tuner has 3 FM banks and 1 AM bank. You can store 6 presets for each bank giving you a total of 18 FM presets and 6 AM presets.

Local Tuning: Local seek tuning lets you tune in only those analog and HD radio stations with sufficiently strong signals for good reception. There are 4 level of sensitivity for FM and two levels for AM. The higher settings allow reception of only the strongest stations, while lower settings let you receive progressively weaker stations.

Disc Playback

Compatible Discs: The Pioneer DEH-33HD supports playback of CD-Audio, CD-Text, CD-R, and CD-RW discs.

Great Improvement over Factory Radio

Written By Scott M, Jefferson, WI on Tuesday, August 09, 2011

Crutchfield Customer Review

The reviewer purchased this item from us, verified by the email address on the order.

Suffered with the factory "fleet vehicle" radio in the 2007 Impala for years. Not even RDS. Decided to try this Pioneer, but not mess with the factory speakers because removing seats and trim panels is a pain. Also, wanted single DIN instead of factory double DIN for use in my other vehicles when Impala goes away.

HUGE IMPROVEMENT! The factory sound is improved by about %150, the AM now sounds like FM (when the signal is reasonably strong), the HD is great, and the USB is a real treat - no CD's to fidget with.

Installation was a breeze, including the GM chime adapter, and the DIN adapter assembly with cubby hole looks and fits perfect.

As usual, can't say enough about ordering from Crutchfield.

Love HD radio, love the features of this HU

I live in an urban area and the HD radio is awesome. Takes approx. 5 seconds for it to switch from analog at which time you often hear a "skip" in the audio and then all the static vanishes. It's hard to say if the analog radio has more static than my factory unit; I believe I had learned to tune out the static from my analog factory radio. The ipod control function is pretty good. I spent about an hour in the drive way with the manual in my lap, getting to know the ins and outs of this head unit, and a week later, I can navigate the various options relatively easily. I've owned Kenwood, JVC and Pioneer - while I had features and "nit-picks" with each one, I'd be hard pressed to say any one is superior to the other. I'm very pleased with the features, sound and options of this unit. Get the time to know the unit's functions and menus and I don't think you'll regret purchasing this unit. My biggest complaint is that the lights don't dim with the headlights (but as it's night-vision-friendly red I don't find it a real problem).

The instruction booklet is inadequate, confusing. I suppose that this radio works, but I am unable to test all features due to the poor owner's manual.

im very pleased with the unit. I installed it myself, I only had to make one call to technical support and they were phenomenal. The Pioneer manual isn't as organized as it might be but after a week or so, I had all of the controls down.

Directions were fairly easy to understand, though the remote isn't consistent with the controls on the radio - requires a bit of trial and error to get used to, but all seems to work as advertised. This is my first radio install, so I may not know what I am missing, but all went well. When I had a couple a skips on the CD, the radio did well to recover quickly.

Sound, power, HD and reception all great. IPOD through USB is a little clunky, but it works and charges at the same time. Well worth the cost in features and value.

Works great. Used the included adapter kit and harness to replace the factory CD in my F150 pickup. Sound is excellent. Takes some playing around to get used to the controls but overall very easy to use. I just plug a USB thumb drive in the port on the front and put it on shuffle and I have commercial free tunes for days.

Awesome Tuner!

Crutchfield Customer Review

The reviewer purchased this item from us, verified by the email address on the order.

I namely bought this for the HD tuner, USB in and RDS and it has definitely delivered. The tuner is very selective, meaning when I'm next to an FM translator at 101.5 that I pass frequently, I can still hear 101.7, one of my favorite stations that is only 2kw and at least 30 miles away. The digital AM is amazing since I can pick up WBZ-AM all though my 80 mile commute and it sounds like FM. The USB in is awesome too since I can dump a song that I have stuck in my head onto a flash drive, then hop in the car and go. I also have an Olympus 710m Voice Recorder that I can plug directly into the USB port on the radio to listen to class lectures, audio books, or study guides that I have recorded for myself. (This was my excuse to buy the radio in the first place!) The interface takes getting used to, but it makes sense once you do. HD radio is inherently flawed, so you can't blame this radio on that one. The broadcast engineer for the radio station needs to tune their audio so the switch from HD to Analog isn't terrible. This means both the audio itself (many HD stations sound 'brighter') and the timing, since it takes a second for the transmitter to encode the digital signal, so the analog has to be delayed enough so the both signals come out at the same time. So if this is a problem, complain to the radio station, since HD radio isn't that popular yet, the station engineer might not even know there is a problem.

Just bought the Pioneer DEH-33HD and really like the crisp sound through my '96 Honda Accord's factory speakers! The radio was easy to install. I was up and running in less than 45 minutes. Your customer service is second to none!! Thank you Bill Crutchfield!!
