If you want a lot of features but don't want a big price tag, take a look at Pioneer's DEH-P2900MP CD receiver. It delivers MP3 and WMA playback, includes a powerful amplifier, and sports the station-grabbing Supertuner IIID for stellar radio performance. But that's not all.
The handy front-panel auxiliary input on the detachable face makes it a snap to connect a portable music player or a plug-and-play satellite radio. If you want to go beyond a basic audio connection, add Pioneer's iPod® adapter to control your iPod from the receiver while track information is displayed on the face. Or, add a Pioneer satellite radio to enjoy the same ease of control and display. Take hands-free phone calls with the optional Bluetooth® adapter.
Pioneer's Easy EQ lives up to its name, thanks to the six preset tone curves. If you like tweaking the sound a bit more, you can adjust the bass, treble and midrange to your liking, or employ the high- and low-pass filters to specify which frequencies your speakers or subs receive. You'll also find two sets of preamp outputs for adding an amp or a powered subwoofer.

- plays CDs, CD-Rs, and CD-RWs (including discs loaded with MP3 and WMA files)
- detachable face
- remote control
- Easy EQ 3-band equalizer with six preset tone settings
- high- and low-pass filters and subwoofer level control

Why replace your factory radio?
Two good reasons - sound quality and cool features. A new car stereo offers power that's superior to most factory radios, along with more sophisticated tone controls. And most car stereos offer built-in or optional features that add safety and fun to life in your car, including inputs for your iPod or MP3 player, Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free cell phone calls, satellite radio or HD Radio reception, and connections for building an audio system in your car.

Intermittent Display Issues
1998 Jeep Cherokee
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)
The unit itself has impressive features, including subwoofer output and controls. If you want a nice, inexpensive deck to run your amps, this is great bang for your buck. However, I cannot recommend this particular unit due to the fact that after about a month of use it started acting flakey. The front LED readout will disappear intermittently when using the volume control knob. You can usually get it back by switching the input, but it will then sometimes cut out the left channel audio, and it doesn't always come back. I will be returning it.
Great headunit for a great price!
This unit is packed with features if your an audio enthusiast. High pass filter works BOTH on the RCA outs and the internal amp that powers the speakers. Big plus on the RCA outs if your running seperate amp like me to power your speakers. High pass filter goes from 50hz to 125hz. The low pass filter works fine as well. I have my speakers and subwoofer crossover at 63hz. 3 Band EQ works great and also they have preset settings if you want a quick change. I was surprised this unit has such clean sound and its even comparable to more expensive units. The internal amp is rather powerful at 22watts RMS if your not using a seperate amp.
The bulid quality of this unit is solid but not the best. The screen is small so it is sort of rather hard to read the abbreviation of things when your changing/tuning the settings. Buttons are small as well but that does not bother me at all. Just one thing that annoys me is at night, the buttons light up but do not light up what kind of function it has, Besides the Audio or Function button. The unit itself takes some time to get totally used to how to use it. The screen can get scratched easy and they do not include a faceplate case so be careful. Another thing for some is this unit looks factory-ish so if you don't want flashy.
I think this is a great headunit if you want good amount of function, flexibility, and sound quality without the "flashy" faceplates or screens.
Or if you just want something that works and is basic.
2001 Chevrolet Silverado 1500
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)
I put one of these in my 2001 Chevrolet Silverado along with four of the $49.00 Pioneer speakers. Took me about two hours for the whole job. I am happy with this system. In fact, I just ordered the same system for my wife's Honda Accord. Much better sound than stock. Like everyone else has written, the volume knob is kinda small. I find myself riding down the highway with the remote in my hand. Crutchfield is number 1!
Fantastic unit worth way more than the price!
This unit went into a 91 Toyota SR4 4x4 Pickup with (4) factory 4" speakers (I know! But wait!) The speakers are in the front dash and rear panels behind the seats (extended cab). I assumed like anyone would, that Id have to replace the speakers to get any real quality sound, and when I installed the deck and turned it on, I was even more convinced. BUT, that was before I played with the numerous settings! Anyone who says this deck doesnt deliver bass didnt configure it correctly. If there is anything negative to say, its only that you have to read the manual if you arent familiar with newer decks. In this case, I adjusted it as if there was a SW, turned on the HPF to create some freq. separation between F/R speakers, boosted bass to the HI setting for the EQ, and adjusted the high end to hit that sweet spot. COMP setting off but I set BMX to 2. Tom Petty classics came alive, bright yet booming with bass I could feel in my chest! Clear mid range filled out the belly for am economical deck that provides all around sound imaging that will more than please anyone who isnt into spending <$500 on a sound system w/ amps and woofers to make the car jump. Im a die hard rock fan, so I cant comment on rap, but if you like your boom inside the car rather than out, you will be crazy happy. This deck has so many sound options, you can tweak it to make any speakers sound fantastic. Im an audiophile (just not willing to put an expensive system in this older truck), and I swear this deck makes these 4" speakers sound like top of the line 4-way 6x9s. It blew me away! All that with an MP3 jack, multi-CD controls & more! You cant beat this unit for the price and quality! 10 STAR
WASNT BAD HOOKING THE HU UP PIECE OF CAKE...GOOD NATURAL CRISP SOUND.KICK OUT A LOT OF BASS SO HAVE GOOD SPEAKERS.TOOK ME A WEEK TO GET TO KNOW ALL THE FUNCTIONS BUT U REALLY ENJOY THIS HU.IT LOOKS GREAT BUT HAS TO MANY FUNCTIONS TO TOY WITH. OVERAL:VERY NICE,GREAT SOUND BUT TO MANY FUCNTIONS
One button, to many functions
I guess this radio is ok, but it set up to be used with remote instead of face plate, which means if you driving down the road and wish to change anything you use one knob, and if you push it instead of turning it you get differant functions.
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)
I bought this HU for my 2000 4Runner. First off, the installation directions Crutchfield supplied were right on and easy to follow, installation was a breeze. This is the first aftermarket HU I've owned, and the difference was amazing. I ran this thing with 2 pairs of 6 1/2 inch Alpine Type-S door speakers and i get a loud, crisp, heavy sound. Great buy.
I want to start off by saying that crutchfield is the best ever! Better than a store. At first glance this is a very simple, yet elegant radio. It is fairly easy to install and that is about where all of my hopes and dreams for this radio were shattered. I have been installing radios for 5 years now and I have used them all from Sony to Kenwood to Panasonic. I have had one pioneer before, but it was very cheap. The manual for this thing does not help. Like in the last review, it is short and does not explain anything. The radio has to be on to work some features and off to work others!?! Why they did this I don’t know and why they made it so cluttered I don’t know. It sounded fine, after about an hour of toying with it and finally figuring out how to set each thing up correctly. All the menus seem to be in different places and it all just seems a little too complicated for a $120 unit. With Panasonic all of the features are under one button and very easy to use. Also, with this pioneer unit, the display (which I really liked the look of) just would not scroll. And every time the song changed, I would have to hit the display button again to see the time. I could not get the time to stay, which is what I like. So, overall I really liked the look and it does have a lot of great features if you are willing to take the time to work with it and even then, it still doesn't have that great of sound quality. These are just my opinions and I would not say not to buy this unit because it is nice, but it is just not for me.
Clean looks, clean sound. Superb.
90 Infiniti Q45, 4" Bose 1.5ohm front, 6"x9" Alpine 4ohm rear.
Too many options are buried in menus which take some time to get used to. Mute is only available on the remote, as is pause. To pause from the head unit, you have to press FUNC until PAUSE comes up, then press down to enable PAUSE: ON.
Fortunately, once your settings are made, theres little reason left to go back into the menus. Theres a separate button for quick access to bass and subwoofer settings.
Manuals are brief and severely lacking in detail. I had to use Google to find out what COMP and BMX were [sound enhancement for compressed audio].
It will display song title, artist, bit rate, album, etc, but will not scroll the text until you press and hold the scroll button each time.
The optional Pioneer iPod interface is excruciatingly slow to the point of being useless. I ordered a Harman Kardon Drive+Play instead.
Sound is -exceptionally- clean with dozens of options for shaping bass, mid, treble, and subwoofer output. This makes it possible for the DEH-P2900MP to accomodate itself to a variety of speakers and environments.
A built-in adjustable high pass filter takes the load off speakers, allowing the sub to focus on bass output.
The unit itself draws little attention, a particularly good thing for a luxury car. Subtle green lighting matches my Infinitis LED displays perfectly.
It offers TWO AUXILIARY INPUTS, one front and one rear. This is perfect for me because I have an XM MyFi and an iPod Video. You have to read the manual to figure out how to turn on the rear input jack.

Overview: The Pioneer DEH-P2900MP AM/FM/CD receiver features a Mosfet amplifier, Super TunerIIID, Satellite Radio-Ready controls, iPod compatibility, two sets of RCA preamp outputs, a front auxiliary input and CD-changer controls along with a detachable face.
Mosfet Amplifier: The DEH-P2900MP delivers a full 22 watts x 4 channels RMS and 50 watts x 4 channels peak. Compared to conventional power supplies, the MOSFET amplification circuit is smaller and more efficient, and it delivers increased power with less distortion and absolutely zero on/off switching noise. More power means louder and cleaner music at higher volumes because you're not pushing the limits of the amplification circuit.
Supertuner IIID AM/FM Tuner: The Supertuner IIID features Feed Forward Control, which avoids multi-path interference. This pre-detection of interference enables quick filter control and results in less distortion. In addition, the Supertuner IIID creates enhanced stereo during multi-path interference, unlike conventional tuners that collapse to mono. Digital processing reduces distortion, and improves Signal-to-Noise Ratio and stereo separation. Advanced analog technology improves signal processing sensitivity.
BSM (Best Stations Memory): BSM lets you automatically store the six strongest stations under preset buttons 1-6 of the currently tuned band. The tuner has 3 FM banks and 1 AM bank. You can store 6 presets for each bank giving you a total of 18 FM presets and 6 AM presets.
Local Tuning: Local seek tuning lets you tune in only those radio stations with sufficiently strong signals for good reception. There are 4 level of sensitivity for FM and two levels for AM. The higher settings allow reception of only the strongest stations, while lower settings let you receive progressively weaker stations.
MP3/WMA/WAV Playback: This unit can play MP3/WMA/WAV files recorded on CD-ROM, CD-R, and CD-RW discs in ISO9660 Level 1/Level 2, Joliet, and Romeo formats. MP3 files with a bit rate from 8-320 kbps, WMA files with a constant bit rate from 48-320 kbps, and WMA files with a variable bit rate from 48-384 kbps are supported. The unit is compatible with ID3 Tags and will display artist, folder, file, and album name, plus comments. Up to 8 directories, 99 folders and 999 files per disc are recognized by this unit.
Note: When playing compressed audio, there is no sound on fast forward or reverse.
Digital Speedread2: The DEH-P2900MP is equipped with Pioneer's Digital Speedread2 CD mechanism, which provides fast performance, especially for reading and playing discs with MP3/WMA/WAV files. It also shortens the audio gap between files during random playback.
AGC (Automatic Gain Control): The CD mechanism has a built-in Automatic Gain Control, which adjusts 7 different settings each time a CD is inserted to prevent the disc from skipping
EEQ (Easy EQ): The DEH-P2900MP is equipped with a 3-band parametric EQ with 6 preset EQ settings. You can boost or cut each frequency band by +/- 6dB at 1dB intervals. Features of the Easy EQ include:
- Selectable Center Frequencies:
- Low: 40, 80, 100, or 160 Hz
- Mid: 200, 500, 1k, or 2k Hz
- High: 3k, 8k, 10k or 12k Hz
- Preset EEQ Settings: Powerful, Super Bass, Vocal, Natural, Custom, and EQ Flat
- Selectable Q Factors: 2 Narrow, 1 Narrow, 1 Wide, and 2 Wide
Selectable Loudness Levels: Loudness compensates for deficiencies in the low and high frequencies at low volumes. You can choose from three levels of loudness:
- Low: +3.5dB (100Hz), +3dB (10kHz)
- Mid: +10dB (100Hz), +6.5dB (10kHz)
- High: +11dB (100Hz), +11dB (10kHz)
Auxiliary Inputs: The DEH-P2900MP is equipped with a front panel 3.5mm stereo minijack auxiliary input for connecting external components, such as a portable MP3 player, DVD, or VCR. A second auxiliary device can be connected to this unit when an optional adapter is connected to the IP-Bus connector on the rear panel. This auxiliary input (known as AUX 2) must be turned on. See below for more information on the 2nd Auxiliary Input.
2nd Auxiliary Input Ready: In addition to the front panel minijack Aux input (AUX 1), you can connect a second auxiliary component by connecting an IP-Bus/RCA connector. The CD-RB10 lets you connect one auxiliary component, and the CD-RB20 lets you connect an auxiliary component and a CD changer via the IP-Bus connector on the back of the head unit.
Switchable Subwoofer/Rear Channel Output: The pair of subwoofer preamp outputs and rear speaker outputs can be set to "Full" for full range output with full fading capability, or a non-fading "Subwoofer" output. This allows you to either use your 2nd set of preamp outputs or rear speaker outputs for a pair of full range rear speakers, a subwoofer or both. It also enables you to connect the rear speaker leads directly to a small subwoofer without an external amplifier, either to dual 4-ohm voice coil sub, or bridged into a single voice coil, 4-ohm sub. The bridged output is 70 watts max. You can select from the following settings for the rear speakers and preamp outputs.
- R-SP:Full: When the rear
speakers are set to "Full" you can hook up a pair of full-range rear
speakers to the CD player and set the subwoofer preamp output to the
- P/O:Full: subwoofer preamp output used for full-range speakers
- P/O:S/W: subwoofer preamp output used for lowpass subwoofers
- R-SP:S/W: When the rear speakers are set to "SW" you can hook up a subwoofer directly to the rear speaker leads of the CD player. In this mode you cannot adjust the subwoofer preamp output.
Note: The Subwoofer preamp output must be turned "ON" to use it either as a full-range or subwoofer output in order to hear any audio from that output.
Subwoofer Settings: When the Subwoofer outputs are set to "Subwoofer" you have control over a built-in low-pass filter, phase adjustment, and output level. When the subwoofer output is turned on, you can select the frequency of the 18dB/octave low pass filter (50, 63, 80, 100, or 125 Hz), select the subwoofer phase (normal/reverse), and the subwoofer gain (+6 to -24).
High Pass Filter: If you do not want low frequency sounds to play from the front or rear speaker outputs, you can turn on the 12dB/octave High Pass Filter. The HPF has a selectable cutoff frequency (50, 63, 80, 100, or 125 Hz). Only frequencies higher than those in the selected range are output through the speakers.
Bass Boost: The Bass Boost function raises the level of sounds lower than 100Hz. You can select a desired level of bass boost between 0 and 6.
Front Image Enhancer (FIE): The Front Image Enhancer attenuates mid- and high-frequency sounds from the rear speakers at selectable crossover points, so that most of the vocals will come from the front speakers, giving you better image staging. You can select from the following cutoff frequencies: 100Hz, 160Hz, and 250Hz.
Compression and BMX Functions: Using the "COMP" (compression) and "BMX" (Bit Media eXpander) functions, you can adjust the playback quality of the CD player. Each function may be set to one of two levels or off. The "COMP" function compresses the audio signal to eliminate distortion caused by the imbalances between the loudest and softest sounds when played at high volumes. The "BMX" function controls sound reverberations to give playback a fuller sound.
Rough Search: You can switch the search method between fast forward/reverse and "Rough" in which the unit searches every 10 tracks. If there are less than 10 tracks on the disc, the unit will jump to the last track.
Source Level Adjustment (SLA): This function lets you adjust the volume level of each source to prevent radical changes in volume when switching between sources. Settings are based on the volume level of the FM tuner, which remains unchanged. Each source can be independently adjusted from -4dB to +4dB.
10-Character Display: The DEH-P2900MP features a black background with a white 1-line, 10-character LCD display, which takes advantage of MP3, WMA, iPod, XM Radio, and Sirius, plus CD Text-encoded discs. This large display makes it easy to read the song title, artist, and other text used by these sources. CD Text, iPod and Satellite Radio Artist, Song and Station information will be displayed with 8 larger characters for the names and 2 smaller characters for the track number.
Display Illumination/Clock Display: When the Clock Display has been turned on, pressing and holding the Source button turns off audio output, but the clock display remains on. When the Clock Display has not been turned on, pressing and holding the source button turns the unit off completely. Even if you have turned the radio completely off you can view the clock display be pressing the clock button. The clock will then remain On until you turn it back Off. When the unit is On you can select between the clock display or the audio track/tuner display.
Detachable Face Security: This unit features Detachable Face Security. One face-fixing screw is supplied for making the face non-detachable, if desired.
Note: No face case is included with this unit. Optional soft face cases can be purchased for this unit. Part numbers 142FC2C or 142DFC2N.
Remote Control: The DEH-P2900MP comes with a wireless remote control (CXC5719). The remote allows you to control the volume, switch between sources, pause the CD, change the display, and adjust the audio. The attenuator button allows you to quickly lower the volume by about 90%, a function that cannot be performed from the front panel. In addition, the head unit has a 3.5mm minijack on the back panel for connecting an optional wired remote control, such as the CD-MR70 or CD-MR80 (130CDMR70 or 130CDMR80).
Satellite Radio Ready: You can connect and control an external satellite radio tuner. The head unit is compatible with the GEX-P920XM (130P920XM) Pioneer XM receiver. In addition, it is compatible with the XMDirect XM Radio package (item # 700XMPIONE). For Sirius, you can connect the Pioneer Sirius Satellite Radio tuner (130SIRPNR2). A subscription to XM or Sirius, plus the proper antenna is required in order to receive satellite radio programming. The satellite radio tuners connect via the IP-Bus connector on the back of the head unit.
Optional iPod Adapter: The Pioneer CD-IB100ii iPod adapter (130IB100ii) allows you to play and control your iPod, iPod mini, or iPod nano, and view album, artist, and other information on the head unit's 8 character display. You can scroll to the left of the text information by pressing and holding down the Display button. The adapter allows you to perform multiple search functions, including playlist, genre, artist, and album searches. While connected, the iPod adapter also charges the iPod's battery. The adapter works with all "Dock Connector"-equipped iPods, and connects to the head unit via the IP-Bus connector.
IP-Bus Changer Controls: The DEH-P2900MP is equipped with IP-Bus control, which allows you to connect and control other Pioneer components. You can add a multi-disc CD changer, a satellite radio receiver, an auxiliary input adapter, or an iPod adapter. You can add an IP-Bus-compatible 6-disc or 12-disc Pioneer CD changer, and control it from the head unit. The unit feature the following CD-changer features.
- ITS (Instant Track Selection) Programming: The ITS function can be used to program automatic playback of up to 99 tracks per disc for up to 100 discs. With changers sold before the CDX-P1250 and CDX-P650, up to 24 tracks can be stored in the playlist.
- Direct Disc Selection: You can directly select discs 1-6 by pressing the corresponding button number on the front panel or remote. Discs 7-12 can be selected by pressing and holding the corresponding button number, such as button 1 for disc 7, etc.
- CD Track Scan: The beginning of each track on the selected disc plays for about 10 seconds before moving onto the next track and continues until you make your selection.
- CD Text Display: When used with a CD Text-compatible Pioneer CD changer, this unit will display the titles of CD Text encoded discs that are played in the changer. When playing a CD Text disc on a CD Text compatible changer, you cannot switch to the Disc Title Input mode. CD Text disc titles, artist names and track titles longer than 8 characters may be scrolled once to reveal the entire string of text by holding down the Display button.
- CD Sound Quality Adjustment: Using the "COMP" (compression) and "DBE" (dynamic bass emphasis) functions, you can adjust the playback quality of the changer. Each function may be set to one of two levels or off. The "COMP" function compresses the audio signal to eliminate distortions caused by the imbalances between the loudest and softest sounds when played at high volumes. The "DBE" function boosts bass frequencies to give your music a more full sound.
Note: For these functions to work, they must be supported by the Pioneer CD changer.
