Why replace your factory radio?

Two good reasons - sound quality and cool features. A new car stereo offers power that's superior to most factory radios, along with more sophisticated tone controls. And most car stereos offer built-in or optional features that add safety and fun to life in your car, including inputs for your iPod or MP3 player, Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free cell phone calls, satellite radio or HD Radio reception, and connections for building an audio system in your car.

Very Good Overall

Written By Dave, Easton, MD on Monday, January 08, 2007

My fiance purchased this reciever for me for Christmas. This was the first time that I had ever put a cd player in a vehicle before, and I must say that it was a breeze, thanks to Crutchfield!! I put this unit into my 04 Chevy Colorado, and loved the looks and sound of it. My only complaint about this reciever is that it was a bit confusing figuring out all of the features that it has. For a lower priced Pioneer, it sure has alot to offer. For me personally, it was just a bit too confusing, so I sent it back without any problem at all. I am now awaiting another Pioneer unit, which I am sure will arrive in another day or so. I definatly recommend any Pioneer product, which in my opinion, offers very affordable, high quality items for all. A very, very special thanks to Crutchfield for all of your help and OUTSTANDING service!!!! You are #1, and I will always do business with you! Thanks again! Dave D

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed this unit in my wife's 96 Dodge Dakota. For a unit in this price range it is an excellent replacement for a factory unit. Unit sounds and fuctions great with simplicity of operation. The remote is a handy option also. I recommend this radio for anyone who wants a better than stock quality sound without spending major bucks. I also believe that with the addition of upgraded speakers and amp, this unit would still perform to most expectations.

Perfect Fit for Car & Driver

Written By Gerhard, Minneapolis, MN on Friday, November 24, 2006

First the Unit is great, install was so so and operation is excellent.
You should know that my criteria's where as follows:
- easy no look operations (day and night)
- easy min 6 Radio bottoms
- easy CD - Track and Radio Scanning
- easy pre & custom Equalizer setting

These where my personal 4 Goals, I first went to local shops and felled out the knobs and buttons.
All main buttons and the Big Knob are on correct Site for the Driver, no look required - easy excellent operations.
The sound is great as well, it's a great pick and I'm very happy about it.

Negative; you needed to Solder or crimp on the converter harness to the Unit itself. Their where 20 plus dangling leads urrrhh &^%@$. Not good, easy to crimp but the fact I had to make another trip out, read the installation material to match all leads was not mentioned at all on their site.

Also the installation for my Honda was not even correct, ohh well I finally installed it after almost 3 hours including extra trips to the store. Also the Unit template doest not lock the unit solid into the frame. It snaps in and it is somewhat ok, but not rock solid. Maybe I'm asking too much.

I haven't purchased an aftermarket stereo in years; was a little leery of doing so in an older 95 Lumina (which is in good shape). Had the unit three days from order to door, took 60 minutes to install due to the awesome instructions on the Crutchfield Master Sheet. Now I'm waiting on the SIR-PNR2 unit I ordered from Crutchfield to get here now that I've had this unit for 6 months with no problems whatsoever.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Okay, so I have a Saturn. It gets 40 mpg, no joking. The 4-cyl engine has about as much oomph as a hamster and a squirrel chasing each other for a nut. But I can't kill the car. 137k miles and never had a serious repair. I want a new car but can't justify it (40 mpg!) My one complaint? The factory radio is terrible! With that pitiful deck and tiny speakers, it makes all FM radio sound like a congested Rush Limbaugh. It only had a tape deck, and that was dodgy.

So pardon me for being THRILLED with this Pioneer unit. I paired it with some Alpine fronts and Kicker backs and it sounds terrific. I didn't buy a sub because I wanted to see how the four 6 3/4" speakers handle... I don't think I'll need one. The loudness button plus the EQ and other settings on the deck let me get some very nice bass. I think any more thumping and my poor Saturn might fall apart!

The CD player is a champ and doesn't skip. I also like to test a disk after an hour or so playing to see if it gets hot... I know, I know the laser doesn't heat the disk... but the CD picks up the internal heat of the unit, which can indicate if your installation allows it to "breathe." Heat kills electronics. Anyway...Kind of a thermometer for the inside of the deck, and this one stays cool as a cucumber.

I might add on a sub in the future, but for a total system price of $269 (deck, four 6 3/4" speakers, free shipping, free Crutchfield install gear, free wire harness!) you CAN'T BEAT IT!!

Looks like I'll be stuck driving the Saturn a while longer, but at least I'll be jammin!

Good Receiver. First one I received may have had a manufacturing issue

Written By Larry, Dayton Ohio on Friday, November 10, 2006

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed this receiver in a 2004 Chevy Venture van. Installation instructions were right on. Only problem was on the Van you had to dismantle the whole front cargo area to access the radio slot (not crutchfield's fault). Installed the receiver and noticed after a couple hours of use the receiver was pretty hot. The receiver was also kicking out a burning plastic smell. The smell wasnt continous (occured about 3-4 times and hour) and was noticeable because it leaked through the air vents right above the receiver. I contacted crutchfield and they sent me out a new receiver which allowed me to keep the din bracket and wiring in place (this saved me and hour at least). The new receiver went in and it still has a hot plastic smell but the burning smell isnt noticeable so I am assuming the first receiver was a manufacturing issue. The receiver has alot of tweaks. I have no subwoofer so all I can review is the non woofer items. Being a newbie with installing receivers I was used to the old stock bass/treble adjustments. It is not straightforward on this receiver to adjust bass/treble but the finetuning it allows is better off in the long run. The ability to drop the low bass sounds was a plus since all I have is 4 fullrange speakers. This kept from having the bass sounds too distorted.
Overall I am very pleased with the receiver. I mainly bought this receiver to add MP3 capability. The service by Crutchfield on the replacement was fast so buying things from them is a plus because they back their products very well

Sounds great, but a bit less featured...

Written By juliobro, Guaynabo, Puerto Rico on Friday, November 10, 2006

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Looks nice and sounds great. It has cleaner sound than previous models and more sound settings, the low pass and high pass filters work particularly well. There's better functionality because of the rotary volume and solid buttons. Also radio reception is better. MP3 playing is flawless and, although no "skip protection" is listed, the CD player doesn't "jump" with the car.

Now, there's a thing from previous models that at this price range are missing. Audio settings are the same for all sources, when they used to be saved for each source. This was a great feature for people that don't stick for long with one source, it gives more work to the user and could be potentially deteriorating for the EQ and Audio buttons.

2 features that you find on other radios and I've never seen on Pioneer is a Mute and Pause button. Mute is available only on the remote, which I don't use, and to get a Pause you have to get on the settings menu.

So, in the future, I would expect the individual audio settings to come back and would like to see Mute and Pause buttons on the face of the unit.

Besides that, a great sounding, CD/MP3/Radio unit...highly recommended.

Great receiver.....Not so great install. instructions from Crutchfield

Written By Glen, Denham Springs, LA on Wednesday, November 08, 2006

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a great receiver. I installed it in my 2006 Xterra and the sound quality is miles above the factory unit, even with the factory speakers. But it took alot of fine tuning to get there. The last Pioneer receiver I bought was years ago and it had simple bass, treble, and loudness controls. I also connected an amplified Bazooka sub.

If you are installing any aftermarket radio in a late model Xterra, Fontier, or Pathfinder be aware that the installion instructions provided by Crutchfield omit a very important step. DO NOT turn the key to any position while you have the airbag harness unplugged from the back of the receiver/climate control trim panel. This will cause an interrupted circuit fault code in the vehicle's ECM and cause the airbag light to blink continuously. The dealer told me that the airbags still work in this condition but the ECM had to be cleared of the code to stop the blinking light. It's not covered under the vehicle's warranty. I tested the receiver before reconnecting everything like the instructions say to do and this is the result. This is probably good advice for the Titans and Armadas.

Pioneer DEH-P3800MP for Mercury Grand Marquis

Written By John, Leonardtown, MD on Sunday, November 05, 2006

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This unit replaces a failed factory receiver/CD in a 2003 Grand Marquis. Install was very easy using the supplied harness adapters and install kit for Ford radios. The adapter is a kind of press in / friction (or maybe sort of snap in) fit. This unit has no the orange wire is not used. There were also two additional unused connectors from the old radio, I'm assuming they are for factory CD changer and remote controls (I had neither). It looks very nice, but not quite as good as the factory unit. The display looks nice day or night, and is easy to read. It's not loaded with lots of swoopy blinking lights. It's one of the few high power units with a non motorized front and direct access to the cd slot. As for sound, the unit sounds as good or better than the factory unit in the Grand Marquis. It has lots of headroom and is quite punchy. -nice unit-

Crutchfield Tech support is great!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Crutchfield support is excellent!

I installed the radio and new Pioneer speakers in my 1999 Mazda 626. Installation was easy and the directions that Crutchfield supplied are 1st rate.

After about 2 or 3 days, I noticed that the rear speakers did not sound very good. They had some static, even when listening to a cd. I adjusted the HPF and bass, but it did not help.

I called Crutchfield tech support. They walked me through a few steps to make sure the radio was set up right. We then swapped the wires for the front and back speakers to try to determine if it was a radio or speaker problem (I had already thrown away the factory speakers, it would have been easier to reinstall those to test). Anyway, the front speakers then sounded bad.

Crutchfield has sent me a replacement radio and did not give me any hassles or problems. I will install this weekend and hopefully the radio and speakers will sound great.

I have owned other Pioneer equipment and have always been pleased.

This unit is AWESOME! Ordered it on Tues. it got here on Fri. Took about 30 mins to install in my 2001 Dakota, and its sounds great, even with factory speakers. Love that you can adjust the unit to achieve just about any sound that you are looking for. Had one minor problem in the install, called Crutchfield tech support, and in about 2 mins we had the problem fixed. Buying the unit was real easy too. The sales rep. answered any and all questions and was real helpful. Looking to buy aftermarket speakers to maybe enhancing the sound. You also get free install kit, wiring harness, and installation instructions. For the price and the customer service you can't beat the Pioneer DEH-P3800MP or Crutchfield!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After looking for a Few Weeks for a replacement HU for my 2007 Aveo I decided on the Pioneer P3800MP. What an Excellent Choice it was. I was going to go all out and get the HU, Speakers and Amp BUT after getting a $600 Plus Quote by a professional I decided to get the HU and go it alone. WOW, after installing this HU my speakers took on a whole new life and my car has become an exstension of my musical tastes!! First and foremost DO NOT waste your time looking elsewhere, buy it from Crutchfield with the utmost faith as they provide EVERYTHING to get you running right out of the box. I installed it in about one hour and everything has a "AS Stock" look which is just as important to me as the sound and function!! I would not hesitate to recomend this HU to anyone, it is a GREAT value and a GREAT replacement to the stock unit!!

I will add only one Negative about the HU and that is the Volume Knob is also the Selector Knob and that can be a hassle sometimes when adjusting the volume while driving. Sometimes you tap it and it changes to the radio or cd function. That's my ONLY gripe and can be easily solved by using the Remote while driving!!

I researched for about two weeks, and i feel i made the best choice for the amount i wanted to spend with the pioneer deh-p3800mp.I was looking for a simple to use "(while driving)" system
but with the option of upgrading if i would like to.the button layout is great, the large volume knob makes it easy to adjust while driving, the sound is great, the preset e-q,settings are good although you can fine tune
if you wish.the cd/mp3 plays great with hardly any delay time at all,and most impressive i haven't had a skip yet, that's saying alot with pennsylvania highways!!i almost bought my radio elsewhere to save on shipping time and i'm grateful i chose crutchfield, they go above and beyond making sure the install will be quick and painless,,i would surely buy from crutchfield again, thank you!!!

Installed in 1997 Maxima

Written By Gary, Staten Island, N.Y. on Saturday, October 14, 2006

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I'll begin by saying that Crutchfield is incredible. Their delivery is super fast and their customer service is 5 star. This unit is superb for the money. Sound quality is exceptional for a head unit with no distortion or hiss. Installation however was a little tricky and time consuming for the Maxima (about 3 hours). The unit did not fit without a little trimming (I needed to file the trim of the car face plate to make the unit fit)and the face plate of the extra compartment that comes with the unit will not fit. I had to snip the hinges that hold in place and crazy glue it to the face plate. All in all, the unit is superb and the instructions that are sent make for an easy installment. I'll be buying again from Crutchfield!

Pioneer DEH-P3800MP

Written By mjk, saugerties, ny on Tuesday, October 10, 2006

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

So far very pleased with the sound and features of this receiver. I have only two minor complaints:
1) the volume knob is also the source selector; if you accidentally tap it when reaching to adjust the volume, (or if you hit any little bump while adjusting the volume), the unit abruptly switches source (ie, CD to radio). It's extra lame if you're cranking up a song you really like! The knob is fairly sensitive, so it's easy to press it accidentally at first- but once you learn the hard way a couple times, it's easy enough to avoid.
2) I would have liked the pre-set volume when turning it on feature (though there is about a 2 second delay to turn it down before the music starts)

These are relatively minor details though, overall it's a great receiver for the price.

Worth the time and money

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I looked for a radio for 4 weeks, Looked at every web site and superstore. I must tell you that Crutchfield has done there homework and they are very professional and very informative. If you are going to compare apple's to apple's you will not find a better unit for the price and better service. You might find this unit for maybe $7.00 to $10.00 cheaper but it will not include the wire harness, antenna adapter, install kit, or in dash installation sheets. As far as the DEH-P3800 very simple to use and is a sharp looking unit. It took me 15 min to install in a 1991 chevy caprice. I will never shop anywhere else for Car Audio & Video.
Great Job Crutchfield.

Pioneer DEH-P3800MP

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Purchased as a replacement for a cassette deck in a Windstar minivan driving factory speakers. The installation was relatively simple with the Crutchfield supplied instructions, mount kit, and harness.

The radio and CD both sound very good. Much better than expected considering the factory speakers are still installed. Several radio stations that would fade out on factory unit remain strong.
The sound of the CD is clear. The MP3/WMA feature was one the largest factors for purchasing this unit. Two CD's now take the place of ten. The random play feature is nice as well as the preset equalizer settings.
Operation of the unit is easy while driving.

This unit a an excellent buy overall when you factor in sound, price, features, and ease of use. I would not hesitate to purchase this unit again or purchase from Crutchfield.

Very Impressive

Written By Chet, Tampa, Fl on Thursday, September 07, 2006

In my '03 Intrepid I replaced my stock HU with the Pioneer DEH-P3800MP and I must say there is a marked improvement. It is driving 2 Boston S55, 2 Boston S95 and line out to a Pioneer 100 watt amp, and 10" Sub in a band pass box. I don't want overkill here, but I'll likely upgrade the sub and amp soon. The subwoofer controls on the head unit is a great feature. You can set volume, and frequency cutoffs from the face, or remote. The attenuator button is great for the drive thru or bank teller windows.

Regardless, the HU sounds incredible, and is extremely flexible and easy to operate. Everything is menu driven, and fully intuative. I notice another reviewer said there are no directions for setting the clock. Actually that is the very first thing in the extremely complete manual. MP3 'are super easy to navigate through, and the COMP settings normalize the volume, which is a great plus, since many files are at random volumes. Searching folders and files is as fast as standard CD's. No delays at all. The many display modes are clear and easy to read, with one button selection. You can set High Pass filters for the speakers, and low pass for the sub and remove any distortion or muddiness at super high volumes that stress the speaker limits.

The wiring harness, and mounting gear that came free with the unit worked, looks stock, and fit perfectly, and the whole install took under 45 minutes start to finish. I highly recommend this for cost conscious buyers, and anyone else that wants a good looking, clean sounding, easy to operate head unit that is equally easy to install. So far I have not found a single thing to dislike about this product.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I replaced my 2001 Civics stock radio with the Pioneer DEH-3800MP. Obviously, its 100 times more receiver than Honda OEM. I havent been a car-radio guy since the 1990s--back when a vibrating license plate didnt exist. But I am heavily into music production so I know the technical end of sound. This receiver satisfies my tweaking desires. The LowPassFilter is great, but including HPFs for the full range speakers is even better--much cleaner than a passive choke post amp. The parametric EQ is a nice touch. There are only 4 Q presets per band but in car audio, thats enough and far better than the typical 2- or 3-band EQ. I also installed a 150-watt power amp and sub, Pioneer 3-way speaks in back and Kenwood 3-way speaks in front- all stuff Ive had laying around since I salvaged them from my 87 Escort GT in 96 when I traded er in. The 22 watts RMS seems plenty sufficient.

A week prior to installing this Pioneer, I installed a JVC receiver in my wifes car. I like the JVC but its obvious that Pioneer has been in the car-audio market a bit longer. The sound adjustments in the Pioneer head are well thought out and complete - the kind of finish that only comes from years of specific R&D. I can tell the developers love their jobs and have spent a lot of time perfecting their products. The sound adjustments options are everything you should ever need.

Ive only had it for a couple days so I havent gotten my sound 100% dialed in yet, but my commute to work now contains a lot more smiles and I actually dont object to a red light - gives me a few seconds to edit the EQ!

Crutchfield Service is great. Got my package in less than 24 hours from ordering.

Fantastic Value

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My daughter was complaining that her '99 VW Passat's stereo was "blown". So when she left me the car and went on a South American mission trip, I installed the Pioneer P3800. This head unit made her stock speakers (4F 2R) roar. All types of music I sampled (classical, hard rock, vocal pop, electronic, and ambient) sounded fantastic.

I enjoyed tweaking the FEI (front image enhancer) setting. With FEI, I was able to simulate a sub woofer feel. My daughter is not much of a gadget freak so the Easy EQ button really helped her out.

I am very happy with the FM tuner, power amp, controls, sound quality and feature set. I only have two negatives:

1) The CD has a higher than normal noise floor. (I noticed it but my daughter did not)
2) There is no "power on" volume setting.

For the money I paid, this was a fantastic value. Thank you Crutchfield!

Pioneer Head Unit an excellent value.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After weeks of research I finally settled on a Pioneer 3800 to go into my Honda S2000. This head unit provides everything and more that I was looking for- mp3/WMA capable, excellent EQ controls, and RCA outs to add an amplifier, not to mention a great price, free shipping, and everything I needed for an easy install.

A convertible sports car is the worst possible listening environment but the EQ presets are tuned so that any type of music is easily improved, and the Custom setting allows me to tweak the sound exactly the way I want it. I also added new component speakers at the same time.

The controls are simple to learn and use and I've found the 3800 provides enough power to make my new speakers sound great. Certainly much better than the original stock system. I had planned to add an amplifier but am holding off as things have worked out very well running the speakers off the head unit.

I had planned to spend much more for a head unit but found that the 3800 provided everything and more I was looking for. I should add that I tried a Kenwood (didn't like it) and ordered an Alpine deck, and then changed my mind for the Pioneer. Crutchfield's Customer Support staff was extremely helpful and cooperative every step of the way, and were sincerely concerned that I get exactly what I was looking for. I did, and I highly recommend the Pioneer 3800 as an excellent value, full-featured head unit.

I give it a 10. Plus the installation kit and wire harness that come free with purchase it make installing so easy.

Great centerpiece to a mid-level system

Written By Pimpmyody, Snoqualmie, WA on Saturday, July 22, 2006

I am 'pimping my minivan' - yes, suburban guys have to have great sound, too - and this is a perfect setup for my Honda Odyssey. I have it connected to Polk Audio db5250 5-1/4" Component System speakers in front, Kenwood KFC-1060S 4" 2-way Speakers in the back, and an Audiobahn ATB8AT 8" subwoofer enclosure with 100-watt amplifier behind the back seat. The head unit easily powers them all and it sounds awesome! The install was a snap with the Crutchfield harness and instructions - and the support team was right there even through the weekend. Pioneer gives you a range of ways to control the sound - front-to-back, subwoofer crossover, built-in equalizer, and a simple remote that includes a cool feature that basically mutes the unit which is great when the phone rings. For a low-priced, great quality system, this is one sweet tune.

I installed it wish an ease thanks to awesome instructions for my Car Honda Civic Coupe 97 Dx. the system pumps awesome bass and treble notes. My radio can pick signal it never could, I discovers tens of new stations. Amazing advanced features and expansion possiblities for the price and beats any other brand by miles. Best value for money. Go for the 4800 if you use ipod. Now I need to install better front speakers as the stock ones can't handle the bass and crackle. I am very happy

I installed this receiver into a 2003 Camry SE originally equipped with a single disk JBL/Dolby stereo. Thus far, I am pleased with the P3800, though the free installation accessories leave a bit to be desired. The unit does not fit well into the free installation adapter. I had to shave the adapter frame with a knife to allow the removable faceplate to detach and attach smoothly. Crutchfield's online tech support correctly addresses JBL but identifies the wrong location for the cables to bypass the factory amp. Thus the install takes more time than it should. However, the sound difference between my factory unit and the P3800 was startling. The P3800 is a decent sounding rig for an inexpensive unit.

Great Radio - Almost

Written By Roswell, Charlottesville, VA on Monday, July 03, 2006

This radio lives up to the copy printed about it...however, the instruction manual for it leaves a whole lot to be desired - i.e., 'basic instructions' - clock...push button two....that's great if you install the radio at exactly twelve midnight - as NOWHERE in the manual does it state how to set the time....Everything else works and functions as described.

Decent unit.....for the price

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I recently purchased this unit from crutchfield. Unfortunately, after having the unit for a couple of weeks, certain characteristics began really annoying me. First off, the buttons feel cheap, and I felt myself having to press "hard" sometimes just to get the unit to switch a song. The buttons lack feel and are very loose to the touch. Second, The unit will scroll the title of a song only once....and then display the first 16 characters. Again this is not a major issue but after a while it got on my nerves. Last and most certainly not least, I did not like the sound output of the unit one bit (Although its not for lack of sound settings, this player has a ton!). For some reason my subwoofer would sound great, but the sound coming from my infinity reference speakers, no matter what the setting, always sounded like they were being drowned out. In the end I wound up returning the unit and buying a more expensive model.

That being said, the unit is feature packed for the price. You will be hard pressed to find a cheaper cd player with this many features/options. In addition, the display is easy to read and showed up great during the daytime. This is why in the end I give the pioneer a 3-star rating. Its got the goods for cheap, but numerous nags and cheap build quality bring down the overall experience.

ok, first of all, if you're even looking at this stario you already did something right. this head unit is not only good looking but beautiful sounding. i just bought one to replace the factory cd playr in my 1999 mazda millniia, and i love it. pioneer did a great job with the powr put into this unit, 50w doessn't sound like much, but push some 6by9's with it and you'll have a booming system. the controols are easy to use(espeecially the METAL volume/source controol, very nice) and with the free instalation gear, putting it in took only an hour. if you buy this, you'll love it, if you don't....pff whatevr. Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am loving this mp3 player. I had bought a MP3 player for my daughter last Chrismas and wanted one for myself after I heard how good her unit sounded. Installation was a breeze. This stereo sounds great and I love being able to have hundreds of songs availible on just a few cds. I now get excellent FM reception on distant stations in spots where I would experience severe fadeout on my original stock nissan radio. Simple navigation of the folders is uncomplicated but you will need to read the manual for more advanced tasks. I like having a big round knob for the volume. I really don't have much need for the remote but it was included in the price of the unit.(it works!)
The one con that I have is that I didn't buy speakers when I purchased the head unit. This is an amazing head unit and I wouldn't hesitate to recomend it to anyone. Kudos to Crutchfield for continuing to offer free shipping.

Great product for it's price range. I bought this along with a set of Boston Acoustics Speakers for the front and rear of my car. Great sound quality and it powers my speakers perfectly. With the volume only on 20 it sounds like my old on did when it was on 45. The only problem i see with it is the equalizer settings are not very straight-forward or easy to understand.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

In February I bought a 97 firebird. The factory Monsoon CD player didn't work so the first order of business was to work on a sound system. I bought this Pioneer head unit, a Profile amp and 6 Audiobahn speakers. The install took a little longer then usual since I decided to run all new speaker wire, but it was worth it. Everything works flawlessly and the sound is fantastic. Once you get familiar with the audio menu you find that it is really easy to custom set your sound for any type of music. The one big plus for me is the fact that I just can't get this CD player to skip. Firebirds have really stiff suspensions and you can feel every bump in the road. I can even cross railroad tracks and the CD never misses a beat. I highly recomend this CD player to anyone working on a budget.

I bought this cd player for a couple reasons: 1) the price was right 2) it had a pair of pre amp outputs designed for a subwoofer with subwoofer controls built into the unit. right now i dont have the subs installed yet because I want to get a capacitor but the head unit is installed pushing some speakers i bought at the same time (Sony 5x7/6x8s and a pair of Sony 6x9s). The sound is great. The controls take a little getting used to though because they are hard to tell what is what especially at night. Great buy especially for the money. I would recommend it.

This is the second pioneer deck I have purchased from crutchfield, and I couldn't be more pleased with the service and products i have received! Crutchfield by far has the best deals going on car audio! free install kit, wiring harness, and another great deck from pioneer at a great price. You really can't go wrong with this deck! It is basic, but has all the necessary features needed for a great music experience.
The instructions are easy to follow, and install is a snap! Installed in my 98 explorer sport in about an hour and a half. Great sounding deck even without an amplifier. Plenty of power! Room for expansion with aux input, and 2 amp hookups. For the price I paid, I feel very comfortable with the quality of deck I received, and would recommend crutchfield to anyone looking for a great deal and great service on thier car audio needs! The unit is well lit, reads/catalogs MP3 discs extremely quickly, and picks up FM radio better than most.

The factory installed radio in my 2001 Neon would only work when the outside temperature was less than 40 degrees, so I needed to replace my radio if I wanted to listen to it this summer. I investigated car radios locally and on the internet and it appeared Crutchfield supplied the complete DIY package at no additional charge. Received my radio in two days via Federal Express. Using the Crutchfield instructions, adaptor cables and mounting kit the installation was a snap.
Everything fit perfectly and the insallation looks like it was done by a pro.

Very good unit for the price. The display is very visible in bright daylight and good sound quality. Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Just got the 3800 and it is replacing the Alpine 9841. Reception is a lot better on the Pioneer and the EQ functionality gives me tones and sounds I never knew my Infinity speakers could produce! Deep Bass and high notes of cymbals! The Alpine just could not pull in radio signals..AM & FM. The 3800 is doing a much better job.. Only problem with 3800 is that the station buttons are difficult to see with sun glasses on. May just be getting used to the unit layout.
All in all, quite pleased and it unquestionably blows away Alpine!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Looking to add a radio with a CD player to my 2000 Concorde and decided to do it myself. A great deal from Crutchfield with free harness, shipping and no tax!

Some minor annoyances...

1. To remove the dashboard trim on the Concorde, you need to disconnect the plugs going to the AC/heat switches. The instructions don't mention this. One of them has a plug lock that took some time to figure out.

2. If you have an in the glass antenna, you must connect the aux power lead to power the antenna amplifier. The harness instructions do not make this clear, but the helpline knew what was wrong right away.
And I called at 10 PM on a Friday ! Great service !!

3. My old OEM radio displayed station ID and song titles on stations using the RDS system. I thought all new units would have this standard. They do not. If you are used to seeing RDS info, check the features on the unit before you buy, this Pioneer model does not have it.

4. The free harness will require soldering or crimp connectors. Not really made clear during the order process.

Definately Getting the Bang for Your Buck

Written By Andrew, Harrisburg, PA on Saturday, May 20, 2006

You can't go wrong for the price. The features are many, and while it may take a few minutes to learn the options, it has the diversity that higher priced heads carry, such as line out options, etc.

A quick install (about an hour and a half for a 06 Chev Express) with the supplied kit and purchased harness.

Thats the nice thing about Crutchfield, they make it all so simple!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

What a great company and what a great product! I ordered and installed this head unit with 4 polk audio 6 and halves in my suzuki and wow are they clear! The display is great and plenty of sound. There are more adjustments on this unit than I know how to use.

I bought an XM skyfy2 unit as well with the intent of using the built in FM transmitter. After installation I wasn't really impressed with the sound coming from the XM unit and considered returning the head unit for one with a CD and cassette player to use the adapter. When i came back to the site to check out other head units i noticed this Pioneer had dropped in price $20 bucks from what i paid in one week. I decided to call the customer service to find out if they do a price garantee and sure enough they DO! Not only did they refund me the 20 bucks but the sales rep told me of an adapter that plugs into the back of this unit that adapts to RCA connectors so it can be hard wired to my XM unit. BAM! Now i can keep this great unit and not have to use the FM transmitter on my skyfi2! Not only that but with an RCA to mini audio connector (head phone jack) that plugs into my XM unit can plug into a portable MP3 player too. Just disconnect it from the XM and plug it into the MP3 player (even though this unit plays MP3s). I love crutchfield! You have a customer for life! The player gets 5 stars..the company and their support staff gets 10!

I gave this unit 4 of 5 stars. If the rating was based solely on this unit, and it's value, it would be 5 stars. If you are trying to cmpare it to the top of the line players, it would not be 4 stars. It is an excellent sounding head unit, which includes MP3/WMA playback, for a very reasonable price though. I have spent twice as much on other head units, that are no better than this one. I like the Low, Med, and High settings on the Loud function. Most of my past units had only Loud On or Loud Off. The EQ leaves a little to be desired for my tastes, but is excellent in it's price range. I like the Front Image Enhancement, Subwoofer, and Rear Speaker control options this unit provides. It even includes a High Pass Filter. This Pioneer is definitely a nice CD/MP3/WMA player for anyone looking for good sound at a great price.

I just installed this receiver in step-daughter 1996 Nissan Sentra. With the installation instructions Crutchfield provided. It went smooth as silk. It took less than hour. Great job Crutchfield!!!

Now for the receiver. This is a great product to replace your factory HU. Very clean look and sound. The audio options/features are fantastic. This HU is very easy to use (just read the owners manual). And if you have ever had a problem seeing your display when the sun shines on it you will not have it with this HU.

In the past I perfered Alpine and Sony HUs, but after setting up this HU and listing to it I'm going with Pioneer.

One last note: If you are planning to build a complete
system (Component Speakers, Subwoofers, and Amplifers for everything) go to atleast to the next HU up to the(4800mp) it has 3 sets of preamp outputs.

Replaced entire system in a 2005 Ford Five Hundred.

Started with the receiver and panel work first. This receiver replaced a factor CD deck.

Even before replacing the factory speakers, the sound was bright and alive! I was shocked at the level of difference, even with the stock drivers. The lows were more deep, and the highs were bright and alive. A world of difference!

Of course, the Pioneer speakers all around was another significant improvement, but I was just surprised at the improvement with factory drivers.

Features are excellent, exactly what I was looking for. Worked as expected, and expectations were high.

I just replaced the stock Ford HU with this, as the display on it went south. Obviously an improvement and only two complaints/ points to be aware of; When using the XM tuner, it only displays the channel # or the Channel name-no artist or song info. Also, I have this unit hardwired to a Pioneer GEX920 XM tuner, while this makes for a clear FM reception free signal, it made me realize that satellite radio is not in stereo! It is like a very clear AM broadcast.

Most bang for the buck. That's what we are all after. This car stereo has the features of higher end stereo without all the 'glitter'. It'll play your mp3, wma or cda files flawlessly. I loaded about 15 of my cd's onto one cd using .wma files and windows media player, that's about 14 hours of music per cd! The only thing that was a little obscure was how to do it. After a little research I figured out that you had to save it as a HIGHMAT type file. After that it was a breeze. The artist, album, track title all scroll across the easy to read display. The preamp/sub outputs allow for expansion and the controls are easy to figure out(for those of us that hate reading the manual). I highly recommend this. Most bang for the buck! Happy listening.

One word about the whole experience; AWESOME! The stereo is fabulous. The sales staff at Crutchfield is super nice. I have an '03 Tacoma, double cab. The instructions from Crutchfield made this a snap. Took me just over 2 hrs. The part that took the most time was figuring out where to hook up the ground wire. Wiring harnesses matched color for color. The only thing that the instructions didn't say was that there is a "basket" that encases the head unit itself which needs to be removed. I've read that other people say it was a big improvement over their factory systems even with their factory speakers; big isn't the word. It seemed like I doubled my output and sound. This unit has everything and sounds great. Props to Pioneer and Crutchfield. I'll definitely be buying all of my electronics from here in the future!

Also, for anyone reading this that might be skeptical about all of these rave reviews, these are 100% real. I was skeptical at first. This is my 2nd purchase through Crutchfield and it won't be my last. It's too bad Crutchfield doesn't have national retail stores.

I purchased this unit to go in my 1990 Ford F-150. The stock unit's display had gone dark many years ago. The Pioneer DEH-P3800MP was easy to install and the supplied harnesses and directions were spot on. As other reviewers have said, the Pioneer DEH-P3800MP did indeed make my stock speakers sound better. However, I replaced them anyway with Pioneer TS-G1641R and then purchased a Bazooka BT6024DVC to add lower end punch. Now my system sounds like I think it should. The only complaint I have about the Pioneer DEH-P3800MP is that the display is generally pretty plain. Obviously this is not a major beef and others may feel differently. A major plus is the supplied remote control. My daughter uses this to change CD tracks and radio stations from the passenger seat. She thinks that is really cool. I figured it would be best to get the latest and greatest technology and improvements. I am especially happy with the service and fast shipping delivered by Crutchfield.

Just had this unit put in a 99 Intrepid with the Infinity system. This unit sounds great with the factory speakers. All the functions you need in a radio. I plan on getting new speakers as soon as these give up. I can only imagine how good it is going to sound with new speakers. This is a very good unit, you will not be disapointed. My only draw back is, it is not a good fit in my dash. Looks as if something is missing. Going back to the installers and see if we can get a better fit.

Alrighty, I must say I was impressed with this model by Pioneer. I compared the deck with many others to make sure I was getting the best BANG for my BUCK. The battle was Pioneer vs. Alpine, and the Pioneer did it for me. This one was it. I recommend this for anyone looking for a great deck at a decent price. The look of the deck did it with the huge scroll button (good, since I have big hands), the buttons are not flimsy, and the CD opening in the front (no need to flip the deck open/close everytime to change a CD). I personally didn't feel like dropping $250-$350 for a fancy-shmancy deck that can flash pictures at me. And the colors of this deck are cool looking too.
Good deck, good price, thanks Crutchfield.

Okay, i'm not gonna lie. I am a pioneer man. I put brand new pioneer speakers in the front of my car to go with the HU. It was a pioneer DEH 2500. I recently got a pioneer 760watt amp and 2 12" 600 watt subs. I wanted to update my HU. I went to a store and they tried to sucker me into the DEH 3700. I decided the price was a little high. So i decided that if i can put in my own speakers, subs, and amp, i could install a HU. So i decided to check crutchfield first. When i looked for the DEH 3700 i found that that was an old HU and a new 3800 was out already. So why pay $170 for an older HU when i could get the new 3800 cheaper. I like the fact that the 3800 has a remote. And here's a weird fact. My old 2500 has a remote. I didn't realize that other newer HU's didn't. So i give the Pioneer DEH-P3800MP a five because that is the highest i can rate it. If u don't want to spend big bucks for a big HU with features u don't use, go with the new 3800. Especially with the free shipping, and installations gear.

Pioneer Hits a Home Run With this Unit!

Written By BS, Gladys, VA on Sunday, January 22, 2006

After studying over several models, and only being slightly enthused by the 3700, I had almost accepted that to have non-opening front panel with round volume control, I had to settle.
But then pioneer introduced the 3800, which upgraded to play MP3s, had a great control panel set up, and even included a WIRELESS REMOTE !!
The display is perfect without flashing lights, and other unnecessary distractions. The controls are very easy to use, and offer many different configurations from low pass and high pass filters(on both speaker leads, and pre-amp outs), to three band eq (instead of Bass & Treble controls) which are adjustable.

Hopefully pioneer will see high sales figures on this model, and realize there is a need for higher end features (important ones like extra sets of pre-amp outs, remote control, high, and low pass filters)WITHOUT bright light shows and hidden CD openings.

Its a steal at $150.00....especially when Crutchfield throws in extra instructions and wiring and dash kits!

Kudos to Crutchfield.

CD Changer Controls

Supertuner IIID AM/FM Tuner: The Supertuner IIID features Feed Forward Control, which avoids multi-path interference. This pre-detection of interference enables quick filter control and results in less distortion. In addition, the Supertuner IIID creates enhanced stereo during multi-path interference, unlike conventional tuners that collapse to mono. Digital processing reduces distortion, and improves Signal-to-Noise Ratio and stereo separation. Advanced analog technology improves signal processing sensitivity.

BSM (Best Stations Memory): BSM lets you automatically store the six strongest stations under preset buttons 1-6 of the currently tuned band.

Digital Speedread2: The DEH-P3800MP is equipped with Pioneer's Digital Speedread2 CD mechanism, which provides fast performance, especially for reading and playing discs with MP3/WMA/WAV files. It also shortens the audio gap between files during random playback.

MP3/WMA/WAV Playback: This unit can play MP3/WMA/WAV files recorded on CD-ROM, CD-R, and CD-RW discs in ISO9660 Level 1/Level 2, Joliet, and Romeo formats. MP3 files with a bit rate from 8-320 kbps, WMA files with a constant bit rate from 48-320 kbps, and WMA files with a variable bit rate from 48-384 kbps are supported. The unit is compatible with ID3 Tags and will display artist, folder, file, and album name, plus comments. Up to 8 directories, 99 folders and 999 files per disc are recognized by this unit.

EEQ (Easy EQ): The DEH-P3800MP is equipped with a 3-band parametric EQ with 6 preset EQ settings. You can boost or cut each frequency band by +/- 12dB at 2dB intervals. Features of the Easy EQ include:

  • Selectable Center Frequencies:
    • Low: 40, 80, 100, or 160 Hz
    • Mid: 200, 500, 1k, or 2k Hz
    • High: 3k, 8k, 10k or 12k Hz
  • Preset EEQ Settings: Powerful, Super Bass, Vocal, Natural, Custom, and EQ Flat
  • Selectable Q Factors: 2 Narrow, 1 Narrow, 1 Wide, and 2 Wide

Selectable Loudness Levels: Loudness compensates for deficiencies in the low and high frequencies at low volumes. You can choose from three levels of loudness:

  • Low: +3.5dB (100Hz), +3dB (10kHz)
  • Mid: +10dB (100Hz), +6.5dB (10kHz)
  • High: +11dB (100Hz), +11dB (10kHz)

Switchable Rear Channel/Subwoofer Output: The rear pair of preamp outputs can be set to "Rear" for full range output with full fading capability, or a non-fading "Subwoofer" output with a low-pass filter, phase adjustment, and output level. When "Subwoofer" is selected, you can select the frequency of the 18dB/octave low pass filter (50, 63, 80, 100, or 125 Hz), select the subwoofer phase (normal/reverse), and the subwoofer gain (+6 to -24). In addition, you can switch the rear speaker outputs from full range to subwoofer and connect the rear speaker leads directly to a small subwoofer without an external amplifier. The rear speaker leads can be connected to a dual 4-ohm voice coil sub, or bridged into a single voice coil, 4-ohm sub.

High Pass Filter: If you do not want low frequency sounds to play from the front or rear speaker outputs, you can turn on the 12dB/octave High Pass Filter. The HPF has a selectable cutoff frequency (50, 63, 80, 100, or 125 Hz). Only frequencies higher than those in the selected range are output through the speakers.

Bass Boost: The Bass Boost function raises the level of sounds lower than 100Hz. You can select a desired level of bass boost between 0 and 6.

Front Image Enhancer (FIE): The Front Image Enhancer attenuates mid- and high-frequency sounds from the rear speakers at selectable crossover points, so that most of the vocals will come from the front speakers, giving you better image staging. You can select from the following cutoff frequencies: 100Hz, 160Hz, and 250Hz.

Compression and BMX Functions: Using the "COMP" (compression) and "BMX" (Bit Media eXpander) functions, you can adjust the playback quality of the CD player. Each function may be set to one of two levels or off. The "COMP" function compresses the audio signal to eliminate distortion caused by the imbalances between the loudest and softest sounds when played at high volumes. The "BMX" function controls sound reverberations to give playback a fuller sound.

Rough Search: You can switch the search method between fast forward/reverse and "Rough" in which the unit searches every 10 tracks. If there are less than 10 tracks on the disc, the unit will jump to the last track.

AGC (Automatic Gain Control): The CD mechanism has a built-in Automatic Gain Control, which adjusts 7 different settings each time a CD is inserted to prevent the disc from skipping.

Disc Naming: You can use the disc title input feature to store up to 48 CD titles in the unit's memory. Each title can be up to 8 characters long.

Source Level Adjustment (SLA): This function lets you adjust the volume level of each source to prevent radical changes in volume when switching between sources. Settings are based on the volume level of the FM tuner, which remains unchanged. Each source can be independently adjusted from -4dB to +4dB.

16-Character Display: The DEH-P3800MP features a multi-color, 16-character display, which takes advantage of MP3, WMA, iPod, XM Radio, and Sirius, plus CD Text-encoded discs. This large display makes it easy to read and cycle through the song title, artist, and other text used by these sources.

Display Illumination/Clock Display: When the Clock Display has been turned on, pressing and holding the Source button turns off audio output, but the clock display and face/button illumination remain on. When the Clock Display has not been turned on, pressing and holding the source button turns the unit off completely. This unit's illumination and clock are "keyed" only when the Clock Display has been turned on.

Detachable Face: This unit features Detachable Face Security. Two face-fixing screws are supplied for making the face non-detachable, if desired. Note: No detachable face case is included with this unit.

Remote Control: The DEH-P3800MP comes with a wireless remote control (CXC5719). The remote allows you to control the volume, switch between sources, pause the CD, change the display, and adjust the audio. The attenuator button allows you to quickly lower the volume by about 90%, a function that cannot be performed from the front panel. In addition, the head unit has a 3.5mm minijack on the back panel for connecting an optional wired remote control, such as the CD-MR70 or CD-MR80 (130CDMR70 or 130CDMR80).

Satellite Radio Ready: You can connect and control an external satellite radio tuner. The head unit is compatible with the GEX-P920XM (130P920XM) Pioneer XM receiver. In addition, it is compatible with the XMDirect XM Radio package (item # 700XMPIONE). For Sirius, you can connect the Pioneer Sirius Satellite Radio tuner (130SIRPNR1). A subscription to XM or Sirius, plus the proper antenna is required in order to receive satellite radio programming. The satellite radio tuners connect via the IP-Bus connector on the back of the head unit.

Optional iPod Adapter: The Pioneer CD-IB100 iPod adapter (130CDIB100) allows you to play and control your iPod, iPod mini, or iPod nano, and view album, artist, and other information on the head unit's display. The adapter allows you to perform multiple search functions, including playlist, genre, artist, and album searches. While connected, the iPod adapter also charges the iPod's battery. The adapter works with all "Dock Connector"-equipped iPods, and connects to the head unit via the IP-Bus connector.

Note: This head unit operates the iPod adapter as an "External Unit", which has some limitations in functionality and display capability (8-characters) compared to headunits with "Full" compatibility.

Auxiliary Input Ready: You can connect an auxiliary component, such as an MP3 player, DVD player, or VCR, by connecting an IP-Bus/RCA connector. The CD-RB10 lets you connect one auxiliary component, and the CD-RB20 lets you connect an auxiliary component and a CD changer via the IP-Bus connector on the back of the head unit. The name of the connected auxiliary component can be entered into memory, and will appear as you cycle through the sources.

CD Changer Controls

IP-Bus System Controls: The DEH-P3800MP is equipped with IP-Bus control, which allows you to connect and control other Pioneer components. You can add a multi-disc CD changer, a satellite radio receiver, or an iPod adapter.

CD Changer Controls: You can add an IP-Bus-compatible 6-disc or 12-disc Pioneer CD changer, and control it from the head unit. It is also compatible with Pioneer's 50-disc changer.

  • ITS (Instant Track Selection) Programming: The ITS function can be used to program automatic playback of up to 99 tracks per disc for up to 100 discs. With changers sold before the CDX-P1250 and CDX-P650, up to 24 tracks can be stored in the playlist.
  • Disc Title Memory: Titles of up to 8 characters each can be entered into memory for up to 100 discs.
  • Disc Title List: This feature allows you to display disc titles that you have entered. From the list, you can select a disc for playback.
  • Direct Disc Selection: You can directly select discs 1-6 by pressing the corresponding button number on the front panel or remote. Discs 7-12 can be selected by pressing and holding the corresponding button number, such as button 1 for disc 7, etc.

CD Text Display: When used with a CD Text-compatible Pioneer CD changer, this unit will display the titles of CD Text encoded discs that are played in the changer. When playing a CD Text disc on a CD Text compatible changer, you cannot switch to the Disc Title Input mode. CD Text disc titles, artist names and track titles longer than 8 characters may be scrolled to reveal the entire string of text.

CD Sound Quality Adjustment: Using the "COMP" (compression) and "DBE" (dynamic bass emphasis) functions, you can adjust the playback quality of the changer. Each function may be set to one of two levels or off. The "COMP" function compresses the audio signal to eliminate distortions caused by the imbalances between the loudest and softest sounds when played at high volumes. The "DBE" function boosts bass frequencies to give your music a more full sound.

Note: For these functions to work, they must be supported by the Pioneer CD changer.
