Our take on the Pioneer DEH-P4800MP

Bring some style to your dash with Pioneer's DEH-P4800MP CD player. Its flip-down face features a big, bright LCD display with a multicolor design that's easy to see, day or night. And if hands-on control is your thing, you'll love the rotary volume knob.

Pioneer's Easy EQ offers six preset sound curves for quick fixes, plus adjustable bass, midrange, and treble controls for custom tone shaping. The built-in amplifier delivers plenty of power for powerful, accurate sound from your speakers. If you want more thump from your system, use the stereo's three sets of preamp outputs to connect your external amplifiers. High- and low-pass filters allow you to tailor the sound to match your system.

And you'll never run out of entertainment options with the DEH-P4800MP. It'll play your MP3- and WMA-loaded discs, and its auxiliary input makes it easy to connect a portable player or other external source. You can even add Pioneer's optional iPod interface and control your digital music library right from the stereo. Satellite radio controls allow you to add an optional XM or SIRIUS radio.

CD Changer Controls

Features

Supertuner IIID AM/FM Tuner: The Supertuner IIID features Feed Forward Control, which avoids multi-path interference. This pre-detection of interference enables quick filter control and results in less distortion. In addition, the Supertuner IIID creates enhanced stereo during multi-path interference, unlike conventional tuners that collapse to mono. Digital processing reduces distortion, and improves Signal-to-Noise Ratio and stereo separation. Advanced analog technology improves signal processing sensitivity.

BSM (Best Stations Memory): BSM lets you automatically store the six strongest stations under preset buttons 1-6 of the currently tuned band.

Digital Speedread2: The DEH-P4800MP is equipped with Pioneer's Digital Speedread2 CD mechanism, which provides fast performance, especially for reading and playing discs with MP3/WMA/WAV files. It also shortens the audio gap between files during random playback.

MP3/WMA/WAV Playback: This unit can play MP3/WMA/WAV files recorded on CD-ROM, CD-R, and CD-RW discs in ISO9660 Level 1/Level 2, Joliet, and Romeo formats. MP3 files with a bit rate from 8-320 kbps, WMA files with a constant bit rate from 48-320 kbps, and WMA files with a variable bit rate from 48-384 kbps are supported. The unit is compatible with ID3 Tags and will display artist, folder, file, and album name, plus comments. Up to 8 directories, 99 folders and 999 files per disc are recognized by this unit.

EEQ (Easy EQ): The DEH-P4800MP is equipped with a 3-band parametric EQ with 6 preset EQ settings. You can boost or cut each frequency band by +/- 12dB at 2dB intervals. Features of the Easy EQ include:

  • Selectable Center Frequencies:
    • Low: 40, 80, 100, or 160 Hz
    • Mid: 200, 500, 1k, or 2k Hz
    • High: 3k, 8k, 10k or 12k Hz
  • Preset EEQ Settings: Powerful, Super Bass, Vocal, Natural, Custom, and EQ Flat
  • Selectable Q Factors: 2 Narrow, 1 Narrow, 1 Wide, and 2 Wide

Selectable Loudness Levels: Loudness compensates for deficiencies in the low and high frequencies at low volumes. You can choose from three levels of loudness:

  • Low: +3.5dB (100Hz), +3dB (10kHz)
  • Mid: +10dB (100Hz), +6.5dB (10kHz)
  • High: +11dB (100Hz), +11dB (10kHz)

Auxiliary Inputs: The DEH-P4800MP is equipped with a 3.5mm stereo minijack auxiliary input for connecting external components, such as a portable MP3 player, DVD, or VCR. This "AUX 1" input must be turned on in the Initial Settings so it can be selected as a source. Once AUX 1 is selected as a source, you can change the source display of the input to any 8-character name. A second auxiliary device can be connected to this unit when an optional adapter is connected to the IP-Bus connector on the rear panel. This auxiliary input (known as AUX 2) must also be turned on, and an 8-character name for the input can be stored in memory. See below for more information on the 2nd Auxiliary Input.

2nd Auxiliary Input Ready: In addition to the rear panel minijack Aux input (AUX 1), you can connect a second auxiliary component by connecting an IP-Bus/RCA connector. The CD-RB10 lets you connect one auxiliary component, and the CD-RB20 lets you connect an auxiliary component and a CD changer via the IP-Bus connector on the back of the head unit. The 8-character name of the connected auxiliary component can be entered into memory, and will appear as you cycle through the sources.

Subwoofer Output: The unit has a pair of dedicated non-fading RCA subwoofer outputs with a low-pass filter, phase adjustment, and output level. When the subwoofer output is turned on, you can select the frequency of the 18dB/octave low pass filter (50, 63, 80, 100, or 125 Hz), select the subwoofer phase (normal/reverse), and the subwoofer gain (+6 to -24).

Switchable Rear Channel/Subwoofer Output: The rear pair of preamp outputs are located on a 6" pigtail, and can be set to "Rear" for full range output with full fading capability, or a non-fading "Subwoofer" output. When the rear preamp outputs are set to "Subwoofer", the rear speaker outputs also switch from full range to subwoofer. This enables you to connect the rear speaker leads directly to a small subwoofer without an external amplifier, either to dual 4-ohm voice coil sub, or bridged into a single voice coil, 4-ohm sub. The bridged output is 70 watts max.

High Pass Filter: If you do not want low frequency sounds to play from the front or rear speaker outputs, you can turn on the 12dB/octave High Pass Filter. The HPF has a selectable cutoff frequency (50, 63, 80, 100, or 125 Hz). Only frequencies higher than those in the selected range are output through the speakers.

Bass Boost: The Bass Boost function raises the level of sounds lower than 100Hz. You can select a desired level of bass boost between 0 and 6.

Front Image Enhancer (FIE): The Front Image Enhancer attenuates mid- and high-frequency sounds from the rear speakers at selectable crossover points, so that most of the vocals will come from the front speakers, giving you better image staging. You can select from the following cutoff frequencies: 100Hz, 160Hz, and 250Hz.

Compression and BMX Functions: Using the "COMP" (compression) and "BMX" (Bit Media eXpander) functions, you can adjust the playback quality of the CD player. Each function may be set to one of two levels or off. The "COMP" function compresses the audio signal to eliminate distortion caused by the imbalances between the loudest and softest sounds when played at high volumes. The "BMX" function controls sound reverberations to give playback a fuller sound.

Rough Search: You can switch the search method between fast forward/reverse and "Rough" in which the unit searches every 10 tracks. If there are less than 10 tracks on the disc, the unit will jump to the last track.

AGC (Automatic Gain Control): The CD mechanism has a built-in Automatic Gain Control, which adjusts 7 different settings each time a CD is inserted to prevent the disc from skipping.

Source Level Adjustment (SLA): This function lets you adjust the volume level of each source to prevent radical changes in volume when switching between sources. Settings are based on the volume level of the FM tuner, which remains unchanged. Each source can be independently adjusted from -4dB to +4dB.

Disc Naming: You can use the disc title input feature to store up to 48 CD titles in the unit's memory. Each title can be up to 8 characters long.

16-Character Display: The DEH-P4800MP features a multi-color, 16-character display, which takes advantage of MP3, WMA, iPod, XM Radio, and Sirius, plus CD Text-encoded discs. This large display makes it easy to read and cycle through the song title, artist, and other text used by these sources.

Function Confirmation Tones: The receiver emits an audible beep tone each time a button is pressed. These function confirmation tones cannot be turned off.

Display Illumination/Clock Display: When the Clock Display has been turned on, pressing and holding the Source button turns off audio output, but the clock display and face/button illumination remain on. When the Clock Display has not been turned on, pressing and holding the source button turns the unit off completely. This unit's illumination and clock are "keyed" only when the Clock Display has been turned on.

Detachable Face Security: This unit features a "flap-face" front panel with Detachable Face Security. If the front panel is not detached from the head unit within five seconds of turning off the ignition, a warning tone will sound. The warning tone can be turned off in the menu, if desired. Two face-fixing screws and holders are supplied for making the face non-detachable, if desired. Note: No face case is included with this unit.

Remote Control: The DEH-P4800MP comes with a wireless remote control (CXC5719). The remote allows you to control the volume, switch between sources, pause the CD, change the display, and adjust the audio. The attenuator button allows you to quickly lower the volume by about 90%, a function that cannot be performed from the front panel. In addition, the head unit has a 3.5mm minijack on the back panel for connecting an optional wired remote control, such as the CD-MR70 or CD-MR80 (130CDMR70 or 130CDMR80).

Satellite Radio Ready: You can connect and control an external satellite radio tuner. The head unit is compatible with the GEX-P920XM (130P920XM) Pioneer XM receiver. In addition, it is compatible with the XMDirect XM Radio package (item # 700XMPIONE). For Sirius, you can connect the Pioneer Sirius Satellite Radio tuner (130SIRPNR2). A subscription to XM or Sirius, plus the proper antenna is required in order to receive satellite radio programming. The satellite radio tuners connect via the IP-Bus connector on the back of the head unit.

Optional iPod Adapter: The Pioneer CD-IB100ii iPod adapter (130IB100ii) allows you to play and control your iPod, iPod mini, or iPod nano, and view album, artist, and other information on the head unit's display. The adapter allows you to perform multiple search functions, including playlist, genre, artist, and album searches. While connected, the iPod adapter also charges the iPod's battery. The adapter works with all "Dock Connector"-equipped iPods, and connects to the head unit via the IP-Bus connector.

Note: This head unit operates the iPod adapter as an "External Unit", which has some limitations in functionality and display capability (8-characters) compared to headunits with "Full" compatibility.

CD Changer Controls

IP-Bus System Controls: The DEH-P4800MP is equipped with IP-Bus control, which allows you to connect and control other Pioneer components. You can add a multi-disc CD changer, a satellite radio receiver, an auxiliary input adapter, or an iPod adapter.

CD Changer Controls: You can add an IP-Bus-compatible 6-disc or 12-disc Pioneer CD changer, and control it from the head unit. It is also compatible with Pioneer's 50-disc changer.

  • ITS (Instant Track Selection) Programming: The ITS function can be used to program automatic playback of up to 99 tracks per disc for up to 100 discs. With changers sold before the CDX-P1250 and CDX-P650, up to 24 tracks can be stored in the playlist.
  • Disc Title Memory: Titles of up to 8 characters each can be entered into memory for up to 100 discs.
  • Disc Title List: This feature allows you to display disc titles that you have entered. From the list, you can select a disc for playback.
  • Direct Disc Selection: You can directly select discs 1-6 by pressing the corresponding button number on the front panel or remote. Discs 7-12 can be selected by pressing and holding the corresponding button number, such as button 1 for disc 7, etc.

CD Text Display: When used with a CD Text-compatible Pioneer CD changer, this unit will display the titles of CD Text encoded discs that are played in the changer. When playing a CD Text disc on a CD Text compatible changer, you cannot switch to the Disc Title Input mode. CD Text disc titles, artist names and track titles longer than 8 characters may be scrolled to reveal the entire string of text.

CD Sound Quality Adjustment: Using the "COMP" (compression) and "DBE" (dynamic bass emphasis) functions, you can adjust the playback quality of the changer. Each function may be set to one of two levels or off. The "COMP" function compresses the audio signal to eliminate distortions caused by the imbalances between the loudest and softest sounds when played at high volumes. The "DBE" function boosts bass frequencies to give your music a more full sound.

Note: For these functions to work, they must be supported by the Pioneer CD changer.

Pioneer DEH-P4800MP

Written By Joe, Columbus, OH on Sunday, December 24, 2006

This head unit is great! I went from an older pioneer (about a year old) with no mp3 playback to this one. This one is a lot better, has a remote, mp3 playback, full control of sub woofer, says the track titles and has XM capability.

I am running this head unit in my 2000 Celica GTS with stock speakers and rockford fosgate subs and 1500 watt amp. Sounds great!

Great features, Small price

Written By Dane, Sunrise, FL on Saturday, December 23, 2006

Great buy! Let me start by saying I was a little skeptical about this head units' price. I was looking to spend around $300 for an upgrade. The DEH-P4800MP happened to have all the features I was looking for i.e, iPod connectivity, built in low and high pass filters, Front+Rear+SUB outputs, decent power, multiple AUX inputs, etc.

I went against my initial gut feeling and purchased this one, instead of a higher price pointed model. I absolutely couldn't be happier with my decision. If you want a flexible HU with some cash left over for speaker, amplifier, or any other upgrade, look no more. I used my extra dough and purchased the "iPod to Pioneer" cable.

I am running the front and rear speakers with the built in high pass filters without an amp, and a sub with it's own separate amp. Nothing too elaborate, but it plenty loud and suprisingly clean.

As always, Crutchfield supplied all harnesses and a bevy of info for an easy and quick installation for my model car, as well as fantastic service with a quick turnaround. Crutchfield does it again! You're the best...Thanks!

A new Pioneer fan

Written By Chris, Augusta, Ga on Friday, December 15, 2006

WOW.... This this unit rocks!! This is my first Pioneer and now I'm kicking myself for not buying pioneer before. The best parts of this stereo for me are:

Awesome internal crossovers for your highs and lows. Aux in jack for MP3 players, remote, Great price, Satellite ready, strong internal amp. Very clean sound. I don't think I've ever owned a stereo that sounds this good. YOu can even hook a rca plug from DVD players, VCRs, etc into this stereo.

The bad, yes there are a few but nothing major. The display is tough to read in bright sunlight. The volume and source button are the same (sometime while adjusting the volume I'll accidentally change the source too) although using the remote instead prevents this.

All in all it can be summed up into 1 word "WOW". Don't be fooled into buying pretty motorized face plate system that will stop motorizing after a year and have crappy sound like I did. Buy this Pioneer you, won't regret it.

Only one bad thing...

Written By dani, Denver, CO on Thursday, December 14, 2006

This HU is awesome, amazing sound, great display...

The only problem I have with it is the random feature. When you set it to randomize (shuffle) tracks, it only stays on random if you let the CD play and don't touch anything. If you try and press the ">" button to go to the next song, it goes back to numerical order. No good!

For use with the ipod adapter

Written By Donny, Colorado Springs, CO on Thursday, December 14, 2006

This unit has great sound, but the use with ipod is amazingly horrible - it is slow and impossible to navigate - you might as well just use the aux in, there is no title of the songs or artists displayed or anything - just IPOD 0001 on the screen - that's rediculous - I returned it and got the Alpine 9856 instead and it is amazing! Crutchfield was awesome about handling it.

Multiple great options

Written By Wade, Ogden, UT on Wednesday, December 13, 2006

I have owned a Pioneer unit in the past (DEHP 7400MP), but this time around I couldn't afford as much so I settled with the 4800MP. And I haven't been disappointed.

Great accessibility with many functional options. The SubSelect allows all freqencies to pass to a Sub while the HP filter keeps all the low frequencies out of the main speakers. 3-band equalizer separates frequencies well enough to fine tune to your personal taste. Power is more than adequate for after-market speakers. Display is clear and easy to see even in direct sunlight. Simple, yet functional, controls both on the head unit and remote allow for easy programming and access.

Highly reccomend to anyone trying to build a budget car audio system but not wanting to sacrifice quality. If you are a first time installer, the instructions and kits that come from Crutchfield make you feel like a pro by the time that you are done. I put it in my 1998 Dodge Stratus in under 2 hours for all connections and running.

Great Sound for the $$$

Written By abartron, Arvada CO on Wednesday, December 13, 2006

Just installed in my 2003 Explorer with the Pioneer TS-G6841R speakers. What a difference!!

I tried the Pioneer TS-G6841R speakers with the factory radio and there was a big improvement. Then I installed the new HU (4800) and it was like WOW!!! I can hear all the highs, mids, & base that I was missing with the stock equipment.

Speaker installation was cake with the instructions and included adapters. The HU was pretty easy too; I just didn't have crimpers to connect the two wiring sets together. I had to run to Checker Auto right before they closed to finish the job that night.

Cons - Pioneer's documentation is somewhat confusing. Had difficulty setting the clock and turning on the AUX1 input for my XM Rody & iPod.

I love this deck!

Written By Anonymous, Augusta, GA on Tuesday, December 12, 2006

I could not decide between the pioneer 4800,5800, and 6800. The only difference between the 3 is mainly the screen appreance. The 5800 is the way to go. It's equalizer functions are great! You have to do a little reading of the manual, but it tuned my factory speakers and they sound great. Also, if you want to upgrade to an amp, subs and addt'l speakers, the 3 preamp outputs are great and make installtion very easy. For the price, it rocks!!!
