Our take on the Pioneer DEH-P4800MP

by Tim Sprinkle
Pioneer

Why replace your factory radio?

Two good reasons - sound quality and cool features. A new car stereo offers power that's superior to most factory radios, along with more sophisticated tone controls. And most car stereos offer built-in or optional features that add safety and fun to life in your car, including inputs for your iPod or MP3 player, Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free cell phone calls, satellite radio or HD Radio reception, and connections for building an audio system in your car.

Bring some style to your dash with Pioneer's DEH-P4800MP CD player. Its flip-down face features a big, bright LCD display with a multicolor design that's easy to see, day or night. And if hands-on control is your thing, you'll love the rotary volume knob.

Pioneer's Easy EQ offers six preset sound curves for quick fixes, plus adjustable bass, midrange, and treble controls for custom tone shaping. The built-in amplifier delivers plenty of power for powerful, accurate sound from your speakers. If you want more thump from your system, use the stereo's three sets of preamp outputs to connect your external amplifiers. High- and low-pass filters allow you to tailor the sound to match your system.

And you'll never run out of entertainment options with the DEH-P4800MP. It'll play your MP3- and WMA-loaded discs, and its auxiliary input makes it easy to connect a portable player or other external source. You can even add Pioneer's optional iPod interface and control your digital music library right from the stereo. Satellite radio controls allow you to add an optional XM or SIRIUS radio.

Features

Supertuner IIID AM/FM Tuner: The Supertuner IIID features Feed Forward Control, which avoids multi-path interference. This pre-detection of interference enables quick filter control and results in less distortion. In addition, the Supertuner IIID creates enhanced stereo during multi-path interference, unlike conventional tuners that collapse to mono. Digital processing reduces distortion, and improves Signal-to-Noise Ratio and stereo separation. Advanced analog technology improves signal processing sensitivity.

BSM (Best Stations Memory): BSM lets you automatically store the six strongest stations under preset buttons 1-6 of the currently tuned band.

Digital Speedread2: The DEH-P4800MP is equipped with Pioneer's Digital Speedread2 CD mechanism, which provides fast performance, especially for reading and playing discs with MP3/WMA/WAV files. It also shortens the audio gap between files during random playback.

MP3/WMA/WAV Playback: This unit can play MP3/WMA/WAV files recorded on CD-ROM, CD-R, and CD-RW discs in ISO9660 Level 1/Level 2, Joliet, and Romeo formats. MP3 files with a bit rate from 8-320 kbps, WMA files with a constant bit rate from 48-320 kbps, and WMA files with a variable bit rate from 48-384 kbps are supported. The unit is compatible with ID3 Tags and will display artist, folder, file, and album name, plus comments. Up to 8 directories, 99 folders and 999 files per disc are recognized by this unit.

EEQ (Easy EQ): The DEH-P4800MP is equipped with a 3-band parametric EQ with 6 preset EQ settings. You can boost or cut each frequency band by +/- 12dB at 2dB intervals. Features of the Easy EQ include:

  • Selectable Center Frequencies:
    • Low: 40, 80, 100, or 160 Hz
    • Mid: 200, 500, 1k, or 2k Hz
    • High: 3k, 8k, 10k or 12k Hz
  • Preset EEQ Settings: Powerful, Super Bass, Vocal, Natural, Custom, and EQ Flat
  • Selectable Q Factors: 2 Narrow, 1 Narrow, 1 Wide, and 2 Wide

Selectable Loudness Levels: Loudness compensates for deficiencies in the low and high frequencies at low volumes. You can choose from three levels of loudness:

  • Low: +3.5dB (100Hz), +3dB (10kHz)
  • Mid: +10dB (100Hz), +6.5dB (10kHz)
  • High: +11dB (100Hz), +11dB (10kHz)

Auxiliary Inputs: The DEH-P4800MP is equipped with a 3.5mm stereo minijack auxiliary input for connecting external components, such as a portable MP3 player, DVD, or VCR. This "AUX 1" input must be turned on in the Initial Settings so it can be selected as a source. Once AUX 1 is selected as a source, you can change the source display of the input to any 8-character name. A second auxiliary device can be connected to this unit when an optional adapter is connected to the IP-Bus connector on the rear panel. This auxiliary input (known as AUX 2) must also be turned on, and an 8-character name for the input can be stored in memory. See below for more information on the 2nd Auxiliary Input.

2nd Auxiliary Input Ready: In addition to the rear panel minijack Aux input (AUX 1), you can connect a second auxiliary component by connecting an IP-Bus/RCA connector. The CD-RB10 lets you connect one auxiliary component, and the CD-RB20 lets you connect an auxiliary component and a CD changer via the IP-Bus connector on the back of the head unit. The 8-character name of the connected auxiliary component can be entered into memory, and will appear as you cycle through the sources.

Subwoofer Output: The unit has a pair of dedicated non-fading RCA subwoofer outputs with a low-pass filter, phase adjustment, and output level. When the subwoofer output is turned on, you can select the frequency of the 18dB/octave low pass filter (50, 63, 80, 100, or 125 Hz), select the subwoofer phase (normal/reverse), and the subwoofer gain (+6 to -24).

Switchable Rear Channel/Subwoofer Output: The rear pair of preamp outputs are located on a 6" pigtail, and can be set to "Rear" for full range output with full fading capability, or a non-fading "Subwoofer" output. When the rear preamp outputs are set to "Subwoofer", the rear speaker outputs also switch from full range to subwoofer. This enables you to connect the rear speaker leads directly to a small subwoofer without an external amplifier, either to dual 4-ohm voice coil sub, or bridged into a single voice coil, 4-ohm sub. The bridged output is 70 watts max.

High Pass Filter: If you do not want low frequency sounds to play from the front or rear speaker outputs, you can turn on the 12dB/octave High Pass Filter. The HPF has a selectable cutoff frequency (50, 63, 80, 100, or 125 Hz). Only frequencies higher than those in the selected range are output through the speakers.

Bass Boost: The Bass Boost function raises the level of sounds lower than 100Hz. You can select a desired level of bass boost between 0 and 6.

Front Image Enhancer (FIE): The Front Image Enhancer attenuates mid- and high-frequency sounds from the rear speakers at selectable crossover points, so that most of the vocals will come from the front speakers, giving you better image staging. You can select from the following cutoff frequencies: 100Hz, 160Hz, and 250Hz.

Compression and BMX Functions: Using the "COMP" (compression) and "BMX" (Bit Media eXpander) functions, you can adjust the playback quality of the CD player. Each function may be set to one of two levels or off. The "COMP" function compresses the audio signal to eliminate distortion caused by the imbalances between the loudest and softest sounds when played at high volumes. The "BMX" function controls sound reverberations to give playback a fuller sound.

Rough Search: You can switch the search method between fast forward/reverse and "Rough" in which the unit searches every 10 tracks. If there are less than 10 tracks on the disc, the unit will jump to the last track.

AGC (Automatic Gain Control): The CD mechanism has a built-in Automatic Gain Control, which adjusts 7 different settings each time a CD is inserted to prevent the disc from skipping.

Source Level Adjustment (SLA): This function lets you adjust the volume level of each source to prevent radical changes in volume when switching between sources. Settings are based on the volume level of the FM tuner, which remains unchanged. Each source can be independently adjusted from -4dB to +4dB.

Disc Naming: You can use the disc title input feature to store up to 48 CD titles in the unit's memory. Each title can be up to 8 characters long.

16-Character Display: The DEH-P4800MP features a multi-color, 16-character display, which takes advantage of MP3, WMA, iPod, XM Radio, and Sirius, plus CD Text-encoded discs. This large display makes it easy to read and cycle through the song title, artist, and other text used by these sources.

Function Confirmation Tones: The receiver emits an audible beep tone each time a button is pressed. These function confirmation tones cannot be turned off.

Display Illumination/Clock Display: When the Clock Display has been turned on, pressing and holding the Source button turns off audio output, but the clock display and face/button illumination remain on. When the Clock Display has not been turned on, pressing and holding the source button turns the unit off completely. This unit's illumination and clock are "keyed" only when the Clock Display has been turned on.

Detachable Face Security: This unit features a "flap-face" front panel with Detachable Face Security. If the front panel is not detached from the head unit within five seconds of turning off the ignition, a warning tone will sound. The warning tone can be turned off in the menu, if desired. Two face-fixing screws and holders are supplied for making the face non-detachable, if desired. Note: No face case is included with this unit.

Remote Control: The DEH-P4800MP comes with a wireless remote control (CXC5719). The remote allows you to control the volume, switch between sources, pause the CD, change the display, and adjust the audio. The attenuator button allows you to quickly lower the volume by about 90%, a function that cannot be performed from the front panel. In addition, the head unit has a 3.5mm minijack on the back panel for connecting an optional wired remote control, such as the CD-MR70 or CD-MR80 (130CDMR70 or 130CDMR80).

Satellite Radio Ready: You can connect and control an external satellite radio tuner. The head unit is compatible with the GEX-P920XM (130P920XM) Pioneer XM receiver. In addition, it is compatible with the XMDirect XM Radio package (item # 700XMPIONE). For Sirius, you can connect the Pioneer Sirius Satellite Radio tuner (130SIRPNR2). A subscription to XM or Sirius, plus the proper antenna is required in order to receive satellite radio programming. The satellite radio tuners connect via the IP-Bus connector on the back of the head unit.

Optional iPod Adapter: The Pioneer CD-IB100ii iPod adapter (130IB100ii) allows you to play and control your iPod, iPod mini, or iPod nano, and view album, artist, and other information on the head unit's display. The adapter allows you to perform multiple search functions, including playlist, genre, artist, and album searches. While connected, the iPod adapter also charges the iPod's battery. The adapter works with all "Dock Connector"-equipped iPods, and connects to the head unit via the IP-Bus connector.

Note: This head unit operates the iPod adapter as an "External Unit", which has some limitations in functionality and display capability (8-characters) compared to headunits with "Full" compatibility.

CD Changer Controls

IP-Bus System Controls: The DEH-P4800MP is equipped with IP-Bus control, which allows you to connect and control other Pioneer components. You can add a multi-disc CD changer, a satellite radio receiver, an auxiliary input adapter, or an iPod adapter.

CD Changer Controls: You can add an IP-Bus-compatible 6-disc or 12-disc Pioneer CD changer, and control it from the head unit. It is also compatible with Pioneer's 50-disc changer.

  • ITS (Instant Track Selection) Programming: The ITS function can be used to program automatic playback of up to 99 tracks per disc for up to 100 discs. With changers sold before the CDX-P1250 and CDX-P650, up to 24 tracks can be stored in the playlist.
  • Disc Title Memory: Titles of up to 8 characters each can be entered into memory for up to 100 discs.
  • Disc Title List: This feature allows you to display disc titles that you have entered. From the list, you can select a disc for playback.
  • Direct Disc Selection: You can directly select discs 1-6 by pressing the corresponding button number on the front panel or remote. Discs 7-12 can be selected by pressing and holding the corresponding button number, such as button 1 for disc 7, etc.

CD Text Display: When used with a CD Text-compatible Pioneer CD changer, this unit will display the titles of CD Text encoded discs that are played in the changer. When playing a CD Text disc on a CD Text compatible changer, you cannot switch to the Disc Title Input mode. CD Text disc titles, artist names and track titles longer than 8 characters may be scrolled to reveal the entire string of text.

CD Sound Quality Adjustment: Using the "COMP" (compression) and "DBE" (dynamic bass emphasis) functions, you can adjust the playback quality of the changer. Each function may be set to one of two levels or off. The "COMP" function compresses the audio signal to eliminate distortions caused by the imbalances between the loudest and softest sounds when played at high volumes. The "DBE" function boosts bass frequencies to give your music a more full sound.

Note: For these functions to work, they must be supported by the Pioneer CD changer.

Pioneer DEH-P4800MP

Written By Joe, Columbus, OH on Sunday, December 24, 2006

This head unit is great! I went from an older pioneer (about a year old) with no mp3 playback to this one. This one is a lot better, has a remote, mp3 playback, full control of sub woofer, says the track titles and has XM capability.

I am running this head unit in my 2000 Celica GTS with stock speakers and rockford fosgate subs and 1500 watt amp. Sounds great!

Great features, Small price

Written By Dane, Sunrise, FL on Saturday, December 23, 2006

Great buy! Let me start by saying I was a little skeptical about this head units' price. I was looking to spend around $300 for an upgrade. The DEH-P4800MP happened to have all the features I was looking for i.e, iPod connectivity, built in low and high pass filters, Front+Rear+SUB outputs, decent power, multiple AUX inputs, etc.

I went against my initial gut feeling and purchased this one, instead of a higher price pointed model. I absolutely couldn't be happier with my decision. If you want a flexible HU with some cash left over for speaker, amplifier, or any other upgrade, look no more. I used my extra dough and purchased the "iPod to Pioneer" cable.

I am running the front and rear speakers with the built in high pass filters without an amp, and a sub with it's own separate amp. Nothing too elaborate, but it plenty loud and suprisingly clean.

As always, Crutchfield supplied all harnesses and a bevy of info for an easy and quick installation for my model car, as well as fantastic service with a quick turnaround. Crutchfield does it again! You're the best...Thanks!

A new Pioneer fan

Written By Chris, Augusta, Ga on Friday, December 15, 2006

WOW.... This this unit rocks!! This is my first Pioneer and now I'm kicking myself for not buying pioneer before. The best parts of this stereo for me are:

Awesome internal crossovers for your highs and lows. Aux in jack for MP3 players, remote, Great price, Satellite ready, strong internal amp. Very clean sound. I don't think I've ever owned a stereo that sounds this good. YOu can even hook a rca plug from DVD players, VCRs, etc into this stereo.

The bad, yes there are a few but nothing major. The display is tough to read in bright sunlight. The volume and source button are the same (sometime while adjusting the volume I'll accidentally change the source too) although using the remote instead prevents this.

All in all it can be summed up into 1 word "WOW". Don't be fooled into buying pretty motorized face plate system that will stop motorizing after a year and have crappy sound like I did. Buy this Pioneer you, won't regret it.

Only one bad thing...

Written By dani, Denver, CO on Thursday, December 14, 2006

This HU is awesome, amazing sound, great display...

The only problem I have with it is the random feature. When you set it to randomize (shuffle) tracks, it only stays on random if you let the CD play and don't touch anything. If you try and press the ">" button to go to the next song, it goes back to numerical order. No good!

For use with the ipod adapter

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This unit has great sound, but the use with ipod is amazingly horrible - it is slow and impossible to navigate - you might as well just use the aux in, there is no title of the songs or artists displayed or anything - just IPOD 0001 on the screen - that's rediculous - I returned it and got the Alpine 9856 instead and it is amazing! Crutchfield was awesome about handling it.

Multiple great options

Written By Wade, Ogden, UT on Wednesday, December 13, 2006
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have owned a Pioneer unit in the past (DEHP 7400MP), but this time around I couldn't afford as much so I settled with the 4800MP. And I haven't been disappointed.

Great accessibility with many functional options. The SubSelect allows all freqencies to pass to a Sub while the HP filter keeps all the low frequencies out of the main speakers. 3-band equalizer separates frequencies well enough to fine tune to your personal taste. Power is more than adequate for after-market speakers. Display is clear and easy to see even in direct sunlight. Simple, yet functional, controls both on the head unit and remote allow for easy programming and access.

Highly reccomend to anyone trying to build a budget car audio system but not wanting to sacrifice quality. If you are a first time installer, the instructions and kits that come from Crutchfield make you feel like a pro by the time that you are done. I put it in my 1998 Dodge Stratus in under 2 hours for all connections and running.

Great Sound for the $$$

Written By abartron, Arvada CO on Wednesday, December 13, 2006
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Just installed in my 2003 Explorer with the Pioneer TS-G6841R speakers. What a difference!!

I tried the Pioneer TS-G6841R speakers with the factory radio and there was a big improvement. Then I installed the new HU (4800) and it was like WOW!!! I can hear all the highs, mids, & base that I was missing with the stock equipment.

Speaker installation was cake with the instructions and included adapters. The HU was pretty easy too; I just didn't have crimpers to connect the two wiring sets together. I had to run to Checker Auto right before they closed to finish the job that night.

Cons - Pioneer's documentation is somewhat confusing. Had difficulty setting the clock and turning on the AUX1 input for my XM Rody & iPod.

I love this deck!

Written By Anonymous, Augusta, GA on Tuesday, December 12, 2006

I could not decide between the pioneer 4800,5800, and 6800. The only difference between the 3 is mainly the screen appreance. The 5800 is the way to go. It's equalizer functions are great! You have to do a little reading of the manual, but it tuned my factory speakers and they sound great. Also, if you want to upgrade to an amp, subs and addt'l speakers, the 3 preamp outputs are great and make installtion very easy. For the price, it rocks!!!

This is a good stereo for its price. Overall quality of this unit is great. Only issue I have is the difficulty viewing the display in bright sunlight. The buttons on the unit is small but I hardly used them b/c I use the remote control all the time. I also purchased an IPOD adapter. If you have an ipod, you have to get the adapter.

Pioneer DEH-P4800MP

Written By Chad, Colorado on Thursday, November 30, 2006
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great receiver! I purchased this unit due to the price, and the functions that come with such a small price tag. In addition to all the great features, the best it being able to plug into the back of the unit with my MP3 player. Not many aftermarket units for this price come ready to hookup to the player without an adapter. (Unless you are part of the iPod crowd like everyone else)

Great unit!

A great all around unit.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this unit to install in my `99 Mazda Protege, replacing the factory AM/FM/CD unit. Of course Crutchfield was tops in customer service.
I had the unit installed over Thanksgiving holiday as part of my new system including a set of Infinity Reference series 2-way 6"x8"`s in the front doors, Infinity Reference series 3-way 6"x9"`s in the back deck, and an Infinity Basslink powered sub in the trunk. Both sets of full range speakers are powered only by the head unit with plenty of volume and clean punch.
I wanted a super simple system with the emphasis on sound quality rather than quantity. I listen to metal almost exclusively so didn`t need tons of boom. I needed thick, tight bass. I set the system up using the Pioneer`s internal high pass crossover and had the unit set up for killer tone in just a few days. I`m very impressed with the Pioneer`s power and performance. I would recommend this unit to anyone wanting to build a high quality but straight forward system. It has plenty of power to drive two sets of coaxial speakers and plenty of internal adjustability. You can easily customize your tone without getting lost in a sea of tech features. When matched with a good powered sub and using the receiver`s high pass feature the system really comes alive as all the internal power is used to reproduce mids and highs without distorting your smaller speakers. Letting your powered sub fill out the bottom end.

I highly recommend this unit. It sounds great, has multiple connectivity options(front, rear, sub outs), good internal tone adjustment/set up tools and a very nice mosfet power amp. Two thumbs up for the Pioneer DEH-P4800MP.

I couldn't ask for anything more from this product. It sounds so powerful and the futures are superb. I don't have any problems reading the display. The beep's it emits when pushing buttons are barely noticeable. I love the aux in, on my other radio I had to use an electric tape, which sounded awful. It those get a bit hot however.

Great Sound!!!

Written By Donny, Dallas, TX on Tuesday, November 21, 2006
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am extremely pleased with the 4800MP! I tuner is the most impressive. The sounds come across with CD quality sound. The highs, lows, and midrange really jump out of the speakers. The CD sounds very good as well but the improvement in sound quality in the tuner is a biggest difference as compared to my factory radio.

Cons - Not many. The instructions to set up the clock are somewhat confusing. Also the station pre-set buttons are small but I've found myself using the remote control more and more.

Returned after one week, poor radio reception, odd controls

Written By David, CA on Monday, November 06, 2006
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this receiver for my '04 Toyota Matrix because it was the highest rated receiver for the price that also had an auxiliary jack for my iPod. I returned it after a week for a more expensive Kenwood model and am very happy I did.

First off, the AM reception on this receiver (at least in my experience) is sub par. With my stock Toyota radio and my new Kenwood, I can get my two favorite local AM stations at my house and all the way to work on my commute. This Pioneer model would not pull in either station until I was half way to work. I actually pulled the unit out to make sure the antenna was connected (and it was).

The controls on this unit are strange. To get to the pause button, you have to switch to a menu mode first, and then scroll for pause, then select pause. That's nuts. The glare off the display is unreal. It looks good at night, but during the day it's very difficult to see, even when the sun is not shining on it. I also found the text to be small and difficult to see.

Also, for my taste, the 4-way rocker switch was not acceptable. I found its use inconsistent and would sometimes have to push up or down twice to get it to respond.

Lastly - the sound. While music sounded good, there was a noticeable "white noise" in the background during quiet passages in songs. This was not present in my original Toyota radio or my new Kenwood receiver. I called tech support at Crutchfield and they had me change the ground wire so it was screwed to the chassis instead of the ground in the harness, but it made no difference.

I realize that others are raving about this unit, but it's my opinion that it is not worth the price.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed this unit on 2000 Chevy Tracker. I highly recommend this head unit as well as Crutchfields service. Instructions, mounting bracket, and wire harness made installation a snap.

This unit meet all Five criteria that I set. I required it cost less than $150, I also need a remote control, I also need the unit play WMA files, I also need an Aux and I also need numbers of people reviewed the unit.

P.S. I ordered the unit on Tue mid-night and it showed up on Fri afternoon. Again, I'm very impressed on Crutchfields service.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The amount of features in this receiver is great. Sound quality it superb and even without an external amplifier it has plenty of punch. The only criticism I would have is the front panel display is not visible in direct sunlight. If you are on a budget and great sound is what you want, this is the receiver for you.

It also helps that a great company like Crutchfield is behind the sale! My fifth stereo from Crutchfield and counting.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

First lets start with the actual head unit itself, this thing is great! all the reviews that i read were dead on. But there is even more that this unit offers other then what has been mentioned. One of my absolute favorite things is the fine tuning that you can do with it to make it sound exactly how you want it too. I actually considered buying a seperate EQ, and to my suprise there is absolutly no use for that whatsoever. I have it hooked up to some polk 4x6's, kicker 6x9s and a kenwood 4-channel amp and it was super easy to get it all hooked up with the built in preouts.

As for crutchfield, perfect! gave me all the extras i needed and shipping was super fast. thanks guys you now have a customer for life!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

wanted a CD player stereo for my 98 grand marquis that wasnt equipped with one. Settled on this unit after reading the reviews. Was unsettled about doing myself. If you are too, no worries. The master sheet, the directions were followed to the letter and dead on. The install was simple, the wiring was a breeze. Was quoted $60-$100 for install of a radio at electronics stores. Could not believe how effortless it was. Everything was included, harness, bracket....Crutchfield i'm a customer for life!
Now the radio is great, crystal clear, great outputs, really rocks the stock speakers...great overall value and sound. but the display is poor. Very dim, and almost hard to see. Might attempt to call to see what can be done. But I love the sound and the ease of use. For the price, even with the dim display, how can you beat it!

I bought this unit expecting a lot from all the reviews, and it still surprised me. This thing is amazing. I have an old 89 Buick, and I was somewhat suprised that it actually worked. The speakers sound ten times better, the unit looks nice, and it's not very hard to use. Paired with all the features, this thing is spectacular. I couldn't be happier.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this product (Pioneer DEH-P4800MP) wanting to get rid of the stock HU of my Honda Pilot. I was a little bit apprehensive at first to do this install, but after reading tips and articles from Crutchfield on how easy to install this unit, I went ahead and ordered. I was not disappointed, I can now "hear" my music which was terribly absent in my stock HU. Install was very easy, following the instructions provided by Crutchfield. All accessories I needed are all included in the shipment. I can now also listen to my Ipod with the Pioneer Ipod Adapter I also purchased from Crutchfield. Overall I am very happy. Highly recommended.

Pioneer DEH-P4800MP in my 2003 Hyundai Santa Fe

Written By mouthbre, Wickliffe, OH on Thursday, October 12, 2006

I'm very pleased with my choice of new head unit for my 2003 Hyundai Santa Fe. Installation was a snap. The only complaint I have is that the trim ring provided by Pioneer is too big for the opening on the Santa Fe. The installation is solid, but lacks that "final" touch. It's not really noticeable, but I know it's not there. The sound from this unit is incredible, and is complemented well by the stock power amp in my Santa Fe. I've had this unit in my vehicle for three days now, and I'm very happy with it. I'm still doing a little tweaking...but, that's a good thing. Thanks, Crutchfield!

Very nice hu!

Written By chris, Michigan on Wednesday, October 11, 2006
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I received my hu within a few days, and although installing didnt go as smoothly as i had hoped (escorts need a dash kit with temp controls) i was very impressed. I really like the dedicated subwoofer outputs and the low pass filter, which is accurate. My only complaint is just as people before me had said, when in sunlight, the screen is nearly impossible to read. However, when you look straight at it, in comes the display, clear as day. Depending on where your location will be depends on how easy it will be to see in sunlight (if i look down i can see the display) The hpf is a nice feature as are all of the features. hooked up to a 15'' kicker cvr and mtx 421D, my components sound great. However without the hpf on, the fronts can start to distort, which isnt a problem if you amp your front stage. Overall i am very happy with my purchase because of the many features which compare with the other hu's of much greater value.

All of the important features of the most expensive models for less $$

Written By Cody, Klamath Falls, OR on Monday, October 02, 2006
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This deck has all of the important features of the expensive models. It has an auxillary input, 3 pre-amp outputs (including subwoofer), mp3 capability, remote, and high and low pass filters. The only thing it doesn't have is a graphic display that you get starting with the next higher Pioneer model. Instead you get a character LCD display. The only donwside to the character display is that you can only see one thing (track name, artist name, folder name, disc name, etc.) at a time. You can keep pressing the display button to cycle though the different fields. Too me, that was worth saving a little cash. Besides, I think a screen saver would be a dangerous distraction for me.

My last cd deck was a Pioneer (DEH-1000) and has lasted for over 10 years! In fact it still works perfectly, but I decided I needed some more features. Pioneer is the only brand I will purchase for a cd deck. The quality and longevity is superb!

Reasons for upgrading: auxillary input, dedicated sub woofer output, and mp3 capability. The aux in is essential for a portable music player which can hold gigs compared to the 700 megabytes of mp3's on a cd. My old deck only had a rear speaker pre-amp output. So when I started cranking up the volume, my so-so rear speakers would get distorted from the bass just when my subwoofer started thumping. This baby has a built in low-pass filter for the dedicated sub pre-amp output and a high pass filter for the front/rear speakers. Now I can crank the volume and everything is crystal clear!

I highly recommend Pioneer CD decks and think this is the perfect price/feature combination.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was hesitant to purchase this unit, but the Crutchfield rep recommended this over the much more expensive unit I was going to buy. All I have to say is WOW! This unit bangs. I installed & instantly my system sounds 100% better. Things to consider... this unit has great ipod interface (which I am lovin'), aftermarket steering wheel control cheaper & easier than other units, 3 pair of preamp outputs, aux input (awesome), best radio tuner on the market... the list goes on. if your considering this unit, buy it. It is the best unit in this price range (and then some).
This was my first purchase with Crutchfield & I can guarantee it will not be my last. I have never had such awesome customer service in my life. Mad props to Trip, Adam, Jackson & all the people at Crutchfield that made this the best consumer experience ever. I will be back!

I purchased this unit for a 2000 Honda CR-V. IT ROCKS. This unit is perfect for the HI's and LOW's. I like the flip down face plate because, I think it helps keep the unit clean. My factory cd's left side basicly quit and I wasn't going to replace with factory or get it fixed. The DEH-P4800MP from pioneer is more than I need. It sounds great with the factory speakers. Be careful if you don't have speakers that can handle the power this unit puts out they may blow. If anyone is planning on buying this unit don't hesitate you won't go wrong. The price and the options of this unit are awesome. You can't buy this unit new without buying a kit or wiring harness for what you pay at Crutchfield. I've checked it out. Very pleased excellant purchase and service. Thanks Crutchfield.

Bought the most popular receiver and happy

Written By K, CA on Friday, September 22, 2006
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The following are nice things about Pioneer DEH-P4800MP

1. It has a stereo aux input on the back for ipod, computer audio, or external dvd player.
2. Pioneer has the best reception for FM/AM radio.
3. Wireless remote is nice.
4. "Best Station Memory" is useful to find strong radio signals.
5. There are multiple Local signal level settings.
6. "Front Image Enhancer" does the job to cut down mid/high frequency of rear speakers to improve front sound image.
7. "Source Level Adjustment" can adjust aux input level to match radio sound level.
8. The performance/price ratio is high.

Things need improvement,

1. The display are not as easy to read under bright light because of the contrast of color LCD is not high enough and the surface is too glossy and reflective.
2. This receiver cannot play AAC.
3. Cannot change display and key button colors.

Great radio for the price

Written By richie, Yakima, WA on Thursday, September 21, 2006

Got this for my new 06 F-350 as a replacement for the factory 6CD radio. Works great with the XM Pioneer tuner while still providing great FM.

One thing not mentioned and advertised as a plus is that it is hard to read because of glare. Today was the first time in three weeks I was able to read it easily (because of heavy cloud layer).

All in all though I'm very pleased with this purchase and the excellent customer service from Crutchfield.

Hard to beat the value of this one

Written By Mark, Cinnaminson, NJ on Saturday, September 16, 2006

I upgraded the deck in my Nissan a few months ago to a 3800 and it sounded so good I decided to do the same to my Ford with a 4800. The biggest difference between the two is the face plate flips down to access the CD player in the 4800 while it's exposed on the 3800, but both sound great.

Crutchfield, as usual, provided in 1 day virtually everything I needed for a quick, professional looking installation including very clear step-by-step directions. I really like the aux input feature of the deck that allows easy connection of an iPod or Sirius radio (make sure you order the cable for that though).

The only down side of the unit is that there are a lot of features and the initial settings for all of them can be a bit confusing, but once you get it set up once you're not likely to change them very often.

There are lots of upsides to the unit though. It is fairly powerful, the tuner is excellent, and it has a nice clean look in the dashboard. For the price this has a lot going for it.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This unit has tons of controls and sounds great! The menus are not very user friendly, but once things are set up initially you shouldn't have to fiddle with it much. The directions from Crutchfield were superb and accurate. It took me an hour to get it installed taking my time. Watch your bass levels though...I've had this unit less than a week with my stock speakers and blew the fuse! Normally this wouldn't be a major problem but this radio doesn't come with an extra one, not to mention you have to uninstall the unit to get at the fuse located on the back of the radio. They should have put it behind the control head in my opinion. Bottom line, it's good bang for the buck can't be ignored.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Purchased this Pioneer a couple of month ago and had it installed into my 1992 SL300 M.B.. Purchased an "Install Card" along with it. Had problems with the first installation as the installer didn't know how to install it. Called Crutchfield and talk with Brian, my Sales Rep about the problem. Brian took the ball and before I knew it, I was talking with one of the mangers from the Install Card company. He had me take to another installer and got the job done. No hassle from anyone. Was very pleased with how it was handle. The stero works perfectly and am very happy with it. The display is hard to read in the sun light but I really do not consider this to be a problem. Great stereo. This was my first purchase with Crutchfield but won't be my last. I found them to be really great to do business with.

I installed this unit in my 2005 Dodge Caravan and the only bummer is that i couldn't connect it to my factory DVD entertainment system(don't use it anyway) I've been buying Pioneer equipment for every vehicle I've owned for over 10yrs(My older DEH-P6600 is retired to my bedroom). The AUX mini jack in the rear is a long time comming,I'm glad pioneer desided to add one to give the buyer more choises to add more things. Some people seem to have problems setting the clock, but everything seemed to be straight forward, besides I guess because I've only dealt with pioneer,I've never had any problems setting up any reciver that came out. Good price, looks good in the dash, added the DEQ-7600 Digital Signal Processor,XM tuner, factory speakers are Infinity preimium sound,so no need for and amp,the sound is hevenly.Great unit for the price, thanks Pioner and Crutchfield.

I love this Pioneer DEH-P4800MP, excellent performer!

Written By TL, Atlanta, GA on Saturday, September 02, 2006
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I teamed up this DEH-P4800MP with a Sirius SIR-PNR2 Satelite receiver to replace a 4 year old Sony Xplod unit that was stolen from my vehicle. The Sony was a nice unit but in my comparison (note I used same car, same speakers, same antenna for comparison) the Pioneer sounds better, has better audio/EQ control, and a much better FM/AM tuner built in. Controls are simple and easy to use. Sirius radio interface works flawlessly with nice controls & display. Having the AUX input built in worked out great for playing my iPod without needing to purchase separate adaptors. This unit is an excellent value. Only feature it could use to improve it would be: either 1) a TWO line display to simultaneously display ARTIST & SONG TITLE info OR 2) a mode that scrolls back and forth between ARTIST & SONG when using the satelite radio.

mp3 Dud

Written By Brian, Fairfax, VA on Friday, September 01, 2006
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I went with this radio based on the excellent specs and all these glowing reviews. Many aspects of this radio are quite good. I like the small volume control steps, and it does sound good. Radio reception is as good as any and the display is quite readable. Regular CDs or CDRs worked just fine. The 3-band "equalizer" is a nice function, since most others in this price range only have 2.

However, I found a fatal flaw: it skipped randomly when playing mp3-CDs. It would skip with the car turned off and sitting in my garage, so it was not bumps in the road that causing the skips. The second unit I tried was definitely better, but still skipped. I didn't give it a 3rd try, but went with a JVC which has been rock solid.

Another major annoyance was how it beeped every time I pushed a button. That got old fast.

If you never play mp3-CDs and don't mind the beeping, it's a good radio. Otherwise, get something else.

Excellent product! I have had this unit for about 6 weeks and haven't had a problem yet. This unit is the best in it's price category. As far as installation, you do not have to remove the mounting bracket for the old stereo (on wranglers). As a matter of fact you can atually use the bracket to fasten this unit from the rear, in addition to the 4 front screws used. All you have to do is find a nut that will fit the threading on the post in the back of the head unit. I installed this unit with 4 polk speakers and the highs and mids are phenominal.

I bought this to replace my factory cd player in my 06 F150 Supercab. I was torn between this and the Kenwood 2032. I have only had it for 2 days, and I LOVE this thing. It does everything one could possibly need. Haven't had an issue with the display being hard to see like others have said. The fit is perfect with the provided kit and wiring harness. I have installed many a car stereo's and even for the beginner, this is an easy install. Kudos Crutchfield!

Very good head unit for the price

Written By Bret, Tucson, AZ on Monday, August 21, 2006

Purchased this head unit to replace an older Poineer unit in a Toyota truck we just purchased for my wife. First off, let me say Crutchfield customer service is exemplary, and the inclusion of the dash kit and wiring harness with the head unit for free is something no one else does.

As for the Pioneer DEH-P4800MP, it is a good head unit for the price. It plays all of my MP3/WMA CD-Rs that I have without a hitch, and has proven to be immune to skips so far (the unit it replaced used to skip quite a bit). It has 3 pre-amp outs, which is a plus as I have a four channel amp running front door speakers and 2 8" subs in the rear. It also has built in high/low pass crossovers for the front/rear and subwoofer outputs, which seem to work well (I preferred it to the crossover in my Rockford Fosgate amp). The only thing I do not like about CD/MP3 operation is that there is no pause button -- you have to go through a set of menus to get to it.

As normal for Pioneer units, FM reception is very good (Pioneer is the king here). There is a parametric equalizer for low, mid and high settings which works reasonably well (I would like to have a greater degree of adjustment). As I said, the sound quality of the unit is very good for price, though it falls short of the Alpine CDA 7995 I have in my own car (again, considering the price, this is no surprise). My wife is very satisfied with the unit, and if you are looking for a solid sounding unit at a very reasonable price, I would recommend this unit.

I chose the 4800MP because It had 3 sets of RCS outs, it provides the sound Q that 90% of the market above it had and it was cheep.

CONs - It only has a 3 band EQ, though they can be set at different freq its only 3.

EX. low med & high with high being ither 8Khz, 10Khz or 12Khz same goes with the medium and low EQ. they can be moved around to 3 different freq.

good cd player for the money

Written By randy, Catlettsburg, KY on Sunday, August 20, 2006
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Absolutely love the glowing green from the cd player. It really put some life back into my speakers. Installation was a breeze with the supplied wiring harness and antenna adapter. The only flaw I have found is when you try to adjust the volume with the rotary knob, and you hit a bump you change the source from cd to radio. Kinda annoying, other than that I'd say give it a try and with Crutchfield, you can't go wrong.

For the money, you can't go wrong. Plenty of power and plenty of fine tuning adjustments. Alot of people say that you can't see it in bright sunshine? I have mine installed in a Ford F-150 Supercab and have no problems at all, Even with shades on. The C.D. player has not skipped a beat yet, nor do I expect it too. Pioneer and Crutchfield are the best in town. Thanks again !!!!

Excellent value

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I just installed this in my wife's Chrysler van to replace the stock stereo. She was looking for something to play MP3's and have a bit more "pop" than what was in there.

Needless to say, the stereo is great. She likes it because there aren't a ton of buttons to operate it. The remote works great and I was able to plug the overhead DVD player (not OEM) right into the auxiliary input.

So far we've experienced no issues at all. The display seems to work fine and is more than bright enough (must be where it's located in the vehicle) compared to some other reviews. The clarity and power is a huge improvement (even with stock speakers) and MP3's sound great. It even has builty in x-over's for front, rear and subwoofer RCA channels.

Great value for the money and is an excellent unit to build a basic multi-amp system around........got me thinking about my vehicle......

As usual, installation was flawless with Crutchfiled accessories (took less than an hour) and instructions.

Pioneer DEH-P4800MP

Written By Amanda, Hays, KS on Sunday, August 06, 2006
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

First of all, I'm never paying for installation again! Ordering from Crutchfield has been a wonderful experience.
I was skeptical about installing this unit, but all went well and it worked on the first try. Very easy to connect, all the instructions were easy to understand, and the install only took about an hour. I've never done anything like this before and had zero problems.
The unit works great, it sounds great! I really believe I got the best deal for my money and have everything I want and need out of this head unit.
I'm still playing around with all the functions though and learning what all the buttons do... but so far so good; my MP3s have never sounded better.
I was also skeptical about the display being dim during the day as others have described... but I have no problems seeing my display in broad daylight. I think it may very well have to do with the angle or height at which it is installed, as this unit does sit very low in my car (I have a 95 merc sable).
I've had great service, got a great deal, and the install was as easy as the sales rep said it would be.

Great Unit for price!

Written By Nelson, Atlanta, GA on Tuesday, August 01, 2006
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I ordered from Crutchfield on Friday and Tuesday morning I had my order on my doorstep; now thats fast! Wire install was a snap with the color code. You really didn't need to read the instructions for installation. The only thing that didn't work out perfectly was the dash kit. It might be a Maxima thing, since my last one didn't work either, but with a few slight modifications it looks professionally installed. LCD contrast is nice with the white on black, very easily seen in the day time. I was skeptical when I read feed back on how people can't view the LCD screen that well during the day. I guess it all depends on the angle when installing this unit. Great sounding, way to many features that I'll never really use unless I get into my system like that. Reads MP3's extremely fast. This is the best investment I have made in a head unit hands down.

Outstanding Experience from start to finish

Written By Loren, Sugar Land, TX on Tuesday, August 01, 2006

Chatted with sales rep who helped me choose my items and put them in my cart. No hurries to make the sale either. Finally made the purchase, unit arrived in good condition about 4 days later. My first install, so it took a few hours, but easy installation instructions with good illustrations. 2 weeks thus far, completely satisified. Cd-r mp3s work so well...may change discs once a month now since I listen to podcasts. Nice remote control, smooth display, and quality sound for the price. Thanks to Crutchfield for the service.

Display not bright enough

Written By Phil, Dalton, GA on Tuesday, July 25, 2006
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After buying and installing this unit, I noticed that the display is very dim. Otherwise, it is a nice unit, with good sound and easy to use contols. However, when driving down the road in the daylight, the display simply cannot be seen, even on an overcast day. I checked with Pioneer Tech Support, and they said there is no brightness adjustment of any kind. They sent me to a Pioneer repair center over 50 miles away, and that repair center does not repair automotive stereos. I then contacted Crutchfield, and they sent me a new unit. The new unit's display is no better. I gave up until I can afford to buy one with a bright plasma display instead of an LCD display like this one. This radio/CD player would be perfect for vampires (who only drive at night). However, as soon as the sun comes up, the display cannot be seen.

Great deal for the price.

Written By David, Fort Worth, Texas on Wednesday, July 19, 2006
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this to drive a set of Poli 675db's. There is plenty of power to provide a light kick in the base. I really like the flexability in the audio output controls. The fine control over the equalizer is really helpful.

The display is a bit light and can be hard to see in the glare of sunlight. There is a noticable hiss in the AUX input from the headphone jack from an iPod. I think the problem is in the iPod and can be corrected
with a line out from the bottom, but I'm not sure.

All in all, it is a great deal for the price.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a great head unit as it was easy to install and has great quality sound. I wish that the buttons could be changed in color but I think I can live with green. Ummm things I would change is its ability to eject CDs with out putting the key in. I also wish it would have came with a case for the face. But overall this is a great radio and I would definately recommend getting it... and make sure you only purchase from crutchfield because they have great service!

Pioneer DEH-P4800MP

Written By Bryan, Powhatan, VA on Tuesday, July 11, 2006

Overall, the 4800MP is a good, solid, reliable unit. The wired remote control input was what made me look at pioneer and the flip down face, mp3/wma support and 2 aux inputs of the 4800 had me sold.

Pros
Excelent sound quality
MP3/WMA/CD-RW support
AUX inputs
Wired remote input and wireless remote (great for if you have steering wheel controls and want to keep them with an adapter).
Cons
No way to change the front button colors (green only)
Menus for audio and inital setup can be a little difficult to learn to navigate through.

Above average Car Audio

Written By Richard, Stuttgart, Germany on Tuesday, July 11, 2006
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Pioneer DEH-P4800MP is powerful, with exceptional sound quality, and has more features than I can figure out. Crutchfield provides outstanding support and their kit and instructions are the best I've seen. I had the radio installed in about two hours in my Camry. Installation could have been quicker if I'd taken the time to splice the new connectors to the the Pioneer's cables - a lesson learned for me (this work can be done in advance of the actual installation).

I find the buttons are too small and confusing when you're driving. I have no idea what benefit the remote control is in my car.

Overall, a great product for the money.

Average head unit

Written By Pat, Maryland on Monday, July 10, 2006
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Let me start by saying Crutchfiled will be my only electronics supplier. While they may not have the best price, the extras and customer support are unmatched.

This is a very average unit.

The CD player is overly sensitive. My stock unit never skipped on a single cd while this unit skips pretty regularly. If you have kids that want to play their kids bop CDs they must be like new or they will skip. I sent one unit back and installed a new one. Unfortunately, the new one does the same thing.

Who knows what supertuner means? My stock GM stereo picked up stations more clearly.

Like I said an average unit with marginal performance. I should have bought an Alpine but was sucked in by this units price.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Pioneer DEH-P4800MP has plenty of power, sounds great, and is packed with features. The Crutchfield kit and instructions are top notch. I had the stereo installed in less than an hour in my Toyota T100. Using the high-pass filter will keep your smaller speakers from crackling under power.

The only things I don't like about the unit are:
Buttons are way too small and you can't tell which one you're hitting if you're driving.
The screen is not bright enough to see during daylight driving, especially if you have sunglasses on.

Overall a great stereo for the money.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

While searching for a new HU for s Father's Day gift to my husband, there were three things we were looking for: Good strong FM reception for him, MP3/WMA player (which would show titles) for me with clean hi/mid/low ranges and something that would look good in a double din opening on a 2005 Tacoma Prerunner. I am more than pleased with all! At setting of 27, the sound is comfortably loud, crisp and clean. We cranked it to 64 and though it was louder than we like, it was STILL clean and clear using the stock speakers! My husband is so impressed, he has to have everyone hear it's amazing sound quality. The reception is very acceptable on the FM and we can't believe how good the unit fits and how nice it looks with the faceplate provided by Crutchfield! I was a bit disappointed in the JVC installed in my car because it just didn't give a clean bass, but that may be because we need to replace the stock speakers. When it quits, I'm getting this unit to replace it. We love it! As usual the sales and tech support was supurb.

Great Features, Specs. Severe Learning Curve

Written By Cameron, St. Louis, MO on Monday, June 26, 2006
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed this and an amp/sub in my '06 Frontier pick-up. It took 2 people about 7 hours to get it all in, but most of the time was for the amp kit. Also, it was my first time installing both a deck and an amp kit, and I'm kind of picky about how things get done (for example, I don't believe in crimping so I soldered all the connections)

The deck is a great value for the money, and Crutchfield's install instructions were accurate and extremely helpful. I wouldn't have known where to start removing the old deck without them.

I really like the high pass filter feature for the main speakers, and independent subwoofer controls.
The only complaints I have about the deck are:
- Sunlight readablility of faceplate is poor
- EQ is hard to use
- Only 1 custom EQ setting can be placed in memory
- Can't display clock and radio station (or CD info)simultaneously
- No faceplate case

this is a great system for a car audio beginner. with the instructions and crimping tool kit (just $13 more) that crutchfield provided for me, installation was incredibly easy. i agree that the EQ presets are useless except for "powerful" but i havent even started to play around with them yet. ive had this in my car for a week and it has been better than i even expected. the sound quality is amazing for the price and with the simple faceplate, it is user-friendly. i highly recommend this player to anybody who is looking to upgrade a cheap factory stereo.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This unit kicks! Installed in my 99 Cavalier with a little difficulty due to dash design, but other than that it's flawless. The kit looks nice, makes it feel like it belongs in the car!

Feature wise this thing is all I need. the HPF and LPF are the things that shine for me, as I am running an amp and two subs. Those with greater needs to adjust more sound options, such as slope, should get a higher-priced model that offers it.

Sound quality out of the MOSFET amp is awesome for what it is. I'm running two 4x6 Pioneer 3-ways in the front, and two 6x9 Pioneer 3-ways in the back, and I push them HARD due to having a convertible and mostly driving on the highway. I have no complaints whatsoever, it's loud enough for me.

Bottom line, for the price this is a great unit. If you like a lot of features and above average sound quality without all of the perks of a multicolor or organic display, this head unit should be yours!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I just installed this unit in my 1998 Mercedes-Benz E320 with Bose. The sound generated with this unit is amazing. I had it loud enough to make my ears bleed and there was no distortion, only clean sound.

With the Bose system, I needed an extra component, a PAC OEM-2. The Pioneer output is amplified and the OEM-2 attenuates the signal down to feed into the Bose amp. This was a simple connection between the Pioneer harness and the adapter harness. Wiring instructions are clear and I installed this in an hour.

This is my 3rd Crutchfield purchase and I am a believer in their quality and customer support. Grade A+++

Room to Grow

Written By smokey, Atlanta, Ga on Monday, June 19, 2006

Bad news first: With the Crutchfield supplied goodies the installation looks professional but I'm not impressed with the quality. I installed this in a '94 Accord and there's really only 2 screws and a tight squeeze holding this thing in place. Maybe that's all I need but I expected something more. As for the actual unit, it does have a ton of features but you'd have to be a sound tech to take advantage of all that's offered. The instructions say the features are not self explanatory and they're right...graphing EQ curves in the manual???? is that necessary?. Final complaint - the preset EQ curves are mostly worthless...to me, only one sounds acceptable. So, with that said, I still give the unit high marks because there are so many features. If you're into building a stellar system I suppose this is a good place to start. I plugged mine into the upgraded stock package, which sounds good but I suspect this unit really needs the amps, subs and upgraded speakers to shine. Truthfully I chose this model based on the Aux Input so I can plug in iPod and XM. I appreciate quality sound and this unit gives you that along with good looks but I think it may be a step above the average user. Hope that helps.

Possibly the best for the money...

Written By Will, Lehigh Valley, PA on Sunday, June 11, 2006

I just got this 4800 installed today. And although there's a lot of features thrown at you at once (especially if you're replacing a typical stock radio) playing with it for about 10 min. was all it took for me to figure out 90% of the controls. The other 10% is radio features but since I don't listen to radio I didn't bother with it. I also had two pairs of Polk DB650's and a Kicker 10 in. sub installed today and I did notice some hissing in the polks. I haven't really figured out if it's the head unit or the speakers that's amplifying the frequency noise but either way it's drowned out easily by music which is what the head units for anyway...playing music. I also take good use of the aux. input with my iPod. all around a very good head unit with a lot of ways to customize your audio output. And to show how lazy we all are it comes with a remote. (I'm not even sure why it's really needed cause I think it's harder to fumble around with a remote instead of just pushing the buttons on the head unit which can't be dropped on the floor) Plus it looks pretty sweet at night.

I had never really been a "Pioneer" guy for this level of gear. But, I kept looking at specs and features, knew that Crutchfield had an awesome return policy and went for it.

I am AMAZED at how good this unit sounds. The loudness control is a Godsend, the EQ makes me rethink my issues with digital EQ, the ability to balance source levels, the punch of the bottom end, the clarity of the top end.

Very nice... I'm very impressed.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is an excellent unit. Sound is very clear and bright, as well as being plenty powerful.

Driving front and rear directly from the head unit, 5x8 and 5.5" round Pioneers, with the high pass at 63hz, with an 8" MTX subwoofer to fill in the lows (sub crossover at 80) using the factory 80W-ish amp. Sounds excellent.

The tunability of the HPF/LPF, EQ, etc., make it REALLY easy to tune the unit to your vehicle's setup and personal taste. The HPF made the main drivers much less muddy when filtering the lows they could not reproduce, and I highly recommend using it, whether you have a sub or not.

Great deck for the price. Wiring harness and install kit (included) made it a "no worry" install. Many features that you would actually use. I especially like the 3.5mm aux. input. I think Pioneer should include a case for the detachable face because I'm afraid of scratching it when I take it off. Also, the remote is too big (almost the size of a credit card) which is probably a design to help you not lose it under a seat. You should definitely purchase!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Good: Sound quality, looks, and ease of installation.

The Bad: Come on guys give me a break! Include a face cover case! It's insane to have to buy this seperately!

I've had my Chevrolet Silverado for 5 years now and have always "tolerated" the factory stereo. I had to put a new battery in the truck and decided it was time to put in a new stereo as well.
This stereo ROCKS!; even with my factory speakers (which will be upgraded soon). It has everything I wanted/needed and more. The wiring concerned me when I went to install it but a quick phone call to Crutchfield and I knew what to do.
This is a great stereo for anyone who loves music but hasnt a clue about all the techie stuff. Sounds great in my truck!
Crutchfield has a new fan and I will be making my electronic purchases here from now on!

Now to order that face cover case......

I ordered this unit to replace the stock radio in a 1996 Corolla. Even before I replaced the sub-par stock speakers there was a huge improvement in the audio quality (especially the lows). I also noticed a very nice improvement in the radio reception. The Pioneer system has also done a great job driving my new speakers. So far this has been a perfect addition to my car audio system.
