Our take on the Pioneer DEH-P5000UB

Pioneer's DEH-P5000UB CD receiver sports sharp looks, an informative, easy-to-read display, and plenty of options for playing all of your media. You can connect and control an iPod® or a variety of other devices through its built-in USB input. The clean-looking face features a 2-line display, with 16 characters per line for artist and title information, while the prominent control knob makes it easy to scroll through your music files and access the receiver's menus.

You'll find plenty of other audio options. The receiver plays MP3, WMA, and AAC files that you've burned to a disc, and you can connect other audio sources to the rear auxiliary input. Add satellite radio to the dedicated input and tap into the wide variety of music, news, talk, and sports that XM and SIRIUS offer. Make your drive safer by connecting Pioneer's optional Bluetooth® adapter — take your calls through your stereo, rather than fumbling around for a phone.

Adjust the sound with Pioneer's Easy EQ — it offers six preset sound curves for quick fixes, plus adjustable bass, midrange, and treble controls for custom tone shaping. The amplifier delivers plenty of power for accurate sound from your speakers, with built in high- and low-pass filters to optimize speaker performance. If you want to really get your ride rocking, use the stereo's three sets of preamp outputs to connect external amplifiers.

Note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver.

Features

Overview: The Pioneer DEH-P5000UB is an AM/FM/CD receiver that can also play MP3, WMA, WAV, and AAC files on disc as well. It has a rear panel 3.5mm auxiliary input for portable devices, as well as a rear panel USB input for your iPod or other USB-based portable audio player or USB memory device. Additional accessories that are compatible with this unit include Bluetooth Audio and Bluetooth Telephone (when the optional Pioneer Bluetooth adapter is connected), XM or SIRIUS Satellite Radio (with an optional satellite radio tuner and antenna), and a multi-CD player. See section below on External Device Controls for details on compatibility.

CEA2006 Compliant: The power specifications for the DEH-P5000UB are compliant with the CEA2006 Mobile Amplifier Power Testing and Measurement standards from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). These standards were developed as a way to equitably compare power specs from model to model and between manufacturers. The power output specs for the DEH-P5000UB are as follows:

  • CEA2006 Specs: 14 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20Hz-20kHz, 1% THD-N)
  • Continuous Power Output: 22 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 50Hz-15kHz, 5% THD)
  • Maximum Power Output: 50 watts x 4 channels (or 50 watts x 2 channels at 4 ohms + 70 watts x 1 channel at 2 ohms for subwoofer)

MOSFET Amplifier: The DEH-P5000UB is equipped with a MOSFET amplifier. Compared to conventional power supplies, the MOSFET amplification circuit is smaller and more efficient, and it delivers increased power with less distortion and absolutely zero on/off switching noise. More power means louder and cleaner music at higher volumes because you're not pushing the limits of the amplification circuit.

Supertuner IIID AM/FM Tuner: The Supertuner IIID features Feed Forward Control, which avoids multi-path interference. This pre-detection of interference enables quick filter control and results in less distortion. In addition, the Supertuner IIID creates enhanced stereo during multi-path interference, unlike conventional tuners that collapse to mono. Digital processing reduces distortion, and improves Signal-to-Noise Ratio and stereo separation. Advanced analog technology improves signal processing sensitivity.

BSM (Best Stations Memory): The BSM (Best Stations Memory) function lets you automatically store the six strongest stations under preset buttons 1-6 of the currently tuned band. The tuner has 3 FM banks and 1 AM bank. You can store 6 presets for each bank giving you a total of 18 FM presets and 6 AM presets.

Local Tuning: Local seek tuning lets you tune in only those radio stations with sufficiently strong signals for good reception. There are 4 level of sensitivity for FM and two levels for AM. The higher settings allow reception of only the strongest stations, while lower settings let you receive progressively weaker stations.

MP3/WMA/WAV Playback: This unit can play MP3/WMA/WAV files recorded on CD-ROM, CD-R, and CD-RW discs in ISO9660 Level 1/Level 2, Joliet, and Romeo formats. MP3 files with a bit rate from 8-320 kbps, WMA files with a constant bit rate from 48-320 kbps, and WMA files with a variable bit rate from 48-384 kbps are supported. The unit is compatible with ID3 Tags and will display artist, folder, file, and album name, plus comments. Up to 8 directories, 99 folders and 999 files per disc are recognized by this unit.

AAC Decoding: This unit will playback AAC files encoded by iTunes recorded onto CDs, however files purchased from the iTunes Music Store (.m4p file extension) are not compatible. Tracks recorded at transmission rates of 16-320 kbps are playable on this unit.

Advanced Sound Retriever: The Advanced Sound Retriever automatically enhances compressed audio and restores the original richness of the recording. When Advanced Sound Retriever is on, the high frequency range is compensated to match the frequency response curve to the original sound. There are two available levels of the Sound Retriever effect.

EEQ (Easy EQ): The DEH-P5000UB is equipped with a 3-band parametric EQ with 6 preset EQ settings. You can boost or cut each frequency band by +/- 12dB at 2dB intervals. Features of the Easy EQ include:

  • Selectable Center Frequencies:
    • Low: 40, 80, 100, or 160 Hz
    • Mid: 200, 500, 1k, or 2k Hz
    • High: 3k, 8k, 10k or 12k Hz
  • Preset EEQ Settings: Powerful, Super Bass, Vocal, Natural, Custom, and EQ Flat
  • Selectable Q Factors: 2 Narrow, 1 Narrow, 1 Wide, and 2 Wide

Selectable Loudness Levels: Loudness compensates for deficiencies in the low and high frequencies at low volumes. You can choose from three levels of loudness:

  • Low: +3.5dB (100Hz), +3dB (10kHz)
  • Mid: +10dB (100Hz), +6.5dB (10kHz)
  • High: +11dB (100Hz), +11dB (10kHz)

List Button: The List button on the front panel allows you to the track title list, folder list, file list, preset channel list, or disc title list, depending upon the source. Once the List button is pressed, you can turn the multi-control knob to view each item on the list. To select the highlighted item, you can press the multi-control. This allows you to quickly make selections from most any source.

Auxiliary Input: The DEH-P5000UB is equipped with a rear panel 3.5mm stereo minijack auxiliary input for connecting external components, such as a portable MP3 player, DVD, or VCR. Once AUX 1 is selected as a source, you can change the source display of the input to any 10-character name. A second auxiliary device can be connected to this unit when an optional adapter is connected to the IP-Bus connector on the rear panel. Both Aux 1 and Aux 2 must be turned on in the setup menu in order to be selected as a source. See below for more information on the 2nd Auxiliary Input.

2nd Auxiliary Input Ready: In addition to the rear panel minijack Aux input (AUX 1), you can connect a second auxiliary component by connecting an IP-Bus/RCA connector. The CD-RB10 lets you connect one auxiliary component, and the CD-RB20 lets you connect an auxiliary component and a CD changer via the IP-Bus connector on the back of the head unit. The 10-character name of the connected auxiliary component can be entered into memory, and will appear as you cycle through the sources.

Subwoofer Output: The unit has a pair of dedicated non-fading RCA subwoofer outputs with a low-pass filter, phase adjustment, and output level. When the subwoofer output is turned on, you can select the frequency of the 18dB/octave low pass filter (50, 63, 80, 100, or 125 Hz), select the subwoofer phase (normal/reverse), and the subwoofer gain (+6 to -24).

Switchable Rear Channel/Subwoofer Output: The rear speaker outputs can be set to provide full range output with full fading capability, or they can be set to provide non-fading subwoofer (low-pass) output. When the rear speaker outputs are set to subwoofer mode, the rear preamp outputs also switch from full range to subwoofer outputs. When set for subwoofer operation, you can connect the rear speaker leads directly to two small 4-ohm passive subwoofers or a dual voice coil sub with 4-ohm voice coils. If you prefer to use a single 2-ohm subwoofer, you can connect the woofer to one set of speaker leads, leaving the other set of rear leads disconnected. The maximum output provided when a 2-ohm load is connected to one set of leads is 70 watts.

High Pass Filter: If you do not want low frequency sounds to play from the front or rear speaker outputs, you can turn on the 12dB/octave High Pass Filter. The HPF has a selectable cutoff frequency (50, 63, 80, 100, or 125 Hz). Only frequencies higher than those in the selected range are output through the speakers.

Bass Boost: The Bass Boost function raises the level of sounds lower than 100Hz. You can select a desired level of bass boost between 0 and 6.

Source Level Adjustment (SLA): This function lets you adjust the volume level of each source to prevent radical changes in volume when switching between sources. Settings are based on the volume level of the FM tuner, which remains unchanged. Each source can be independently adjusted from -4dB to +4dB.

Disc Naming: You can use the disc title input feature to store up to 48 CD titles in the unit's memory. Each title can be up to 10 characters long.

OEL Display: The DEH-P5000UB features a black background with a two-line blue Organic EL display, which takes advantage of MP3, WMA, iPod, XM Radio, and Sirius, plus CD Text-encoded discs. This large display makes it easy to read and cycle through the song title, artist, and other text used by these sources.

Ever Scroll: When the Ever Scroll feature is set to On, recorded text information scrolls continuously on the display. It will auto-scroll up to 64 characters. Set this feature to Off if you prefer the information to scroll only once.

Function Confirmation Tones: The receiver emits an audible beep tone each time a button is pressed. These function confirmation tones cannot be turned off.

Display Illumination/Clock Display: When the Clock Display has been turned on, pressing and holding the Source button turns off audio output, but the clock display remains on. When the Clock Display has been turned off, pressing and holding the source button turns the unit off completely. Even if you have turned the radio completely off you can view the clock display be pressing the clock button. The clock will then remain On until you turn it back Off. When the unit is On you can select between the clock display or the audio track/tuner display. When the unit is off but the ignition is on, the button illumination will light up when the vehicle's headlights are turned on.

Dimmer: To prevent the display from being too bright at night, the display is automatically dimmed when the car's headlights are turned on. You can turn the dimmer function On or Off. The orange/white illumination wire must be connected to the vehicle's headlight circuit in order for this feature to work.

Detachable Face Security: This unit features Detachable Face Security. If the front panel is not detached from the head unit within five seconds of turning off the ignition, a warning tone will sound. The warning tone can be turned off in the menu, if desired. A face-fixing screw is supplied for making the face non-detachable, if desired.

Note: No face case is included with this unit. An optional soft face case (item #142DFC2C) can be purchased for this unit.

Remote Control: The DEH-P5000UB comes with a wireless remote control (CXC8885). The remote allows you to control the volume, switch between sources, pause the CD, change the display, and adjust the audio. The attenuator button allows you to quickly lower the volume by about 90%, a function that cannot be performed from the front panel. The head unit also has a 3.5mm minijack on the back panel for connecting an optional wired remote control, such as the CD-MR70 or CD-MR80 (130CDMR70 or 130CDMR80). In addition, the PAC SWI-PS steering wheel remote interface is compatible with this head unit.

External Device Controls

iPod Interface: The DEH-P5000UB can control and playback songs on an iPod. This unit supports only iPods with a standard Dock Connector. (Please see compatibility list below for your model and software version.) You can connect the iPod using the unit's USB input (a dock connector to USB cable, such as the one supplied with your iPod, or the optional 130CDIU50, is required). When connected via USB, you can choose to control the iPod from the head unit or the iPod itself. (This function only works on iPod classic, iPod touch, and 2nd and 3rd generation nano only. You can still change songs from the head unit, even when you are controlling the iPod manually.) You can perform multiple search functions, including playlist, genre, artist, and album searches. While connected and the ignition switch is set to ACC or ON, the USB connection will power and charge your iPod. The DEH-P5000UB is compatible with the following iPod models:

  • iPhone/iPhone 3G

USB Input: In addition to connecting an iPod, the rear panel USB input allows you to connect a USB portable audio player or USB flash memory that is USB Mass Storage Class compliant.

Optional USB Adapter: If the head unit's built-in USB input is being used, you can connect a USB adapter (130CDUB100, sold separately) to the IP-Bus port to playback audio from a portable audio player that features a USB interface. This USB adapter features a IP-Bus pass-through for daisy chaining another IP-Bus compatible component.

Satellite Radio Ready: You can connect and control an external satellite radio tuner from XM or SIRIUS. The head unit is compatible with the GEX-P920XM (item number 130P920XM) Pioneer XM receiver. For Sirius there are two options; connect the SC-C1 SiriusConnect Universal Vehicle tuner and the CD-SB10 Pioneer Sirius Satellite Radio interface (package item number 700SIRPION), or use the Pioneer Sirius Satellite Radio interface (item number 130CDSB10) and the SIRIUS dock-and-play adapter (item number 607SCVDOC1) along with a compatible portable SIRIUS radio. A subscription to XM or Sirius, plus the proper antenna is required in order to receive satellite radio programming. The satellite radio tuners connect via the IP-Bus connector on the back of the head unit.

HD Radio Ready: This unit is compatible with the optional Pioneer GEX-P10HD HD Radio tuner (item number 130GEXP10H), allowing you to tune available HD Radio stations. HD Radio features high quality audio, FM multi-casting, and data services. The GEX-P10HD connects through the IP-BUS interface.

Optional Bluetooth Adapter: In addition, you can use this unit to control a CD-BTB200 Bluetooth adapter (130BTB200, sold separately) for your compatible Bluetooth mobile phone or Bluetooth portable audio player. The Pioneer CD-BTB200 Bluetooth Adapter allows you to make and receive calls wirelessly and hands-free on your Bluetooth-equipped cellular telephone through this Pioneer "Bluetooth Adapter Ready" head unit. The CD-BTB200 comes with a microphone for making and answering your calls. You can hear the other party through the vehicle's speaker system. The unit connects to the head unit via the supplied IP-BUS cable, and has an IP-BUS pass-through for daisy chaining another component.

Optional TV Tuner: You can use this unit to control an optional Pioneer TV tuner (sold separately).

IP-Bus Changer Controls: You can add an IP-Bus-compatible 6-disc or 12-disc Pioneer CD changer, and control it from the head unit. The unit feature the following CD-changer features.

  • ITS (Instant Track Selection) Programming: The ITS function can be used to program automatic playback of up to 99 tracks per disc for up to 100 discs. With changers sold before the CDX-P1250 and CDX-P650, up to 24 tracks can be stored in the playlist.
  • Direct Disc Selection: You can directly select discs 1-6 by pressing the corresponding button number on the front panel or remote. Discs 7-12 can be selected by pressing and holding the corresponding button number, such as button 1 for disc 7, etc.
  • CD Track Scan: The beginning of each track on the selected disc plays for about 10 seconds before moving onto the next track and continues until you make your selection.
  • CD Text Display: When used with a CD Text-compatible Pioneer CD changer, this unit will display the titles of CD Text encoded discs that are played in the changer. When playing a CD Text disc on a CD Text compatible changer, you cannot switch to the Disc Title Input mode. CD Text disc titles, artist names and track titles longer than 8 characters may be scrolled once to reveal the entire string of text by holding down the Display button.
  • CD Sound Quality Adjustment: Using the "COMP" (compression) and "DBE" (dynamic bass emphasis) functions, you can adjust the playback quality of the changer. Each function may be set to one of two levels or off. The "COMP" function compresses the audio signal to eliminate distortions caused by the imbalances between the loudest and softest sounds when played at high volumes. The "DBE" function boosts bass frequencies to give your music a more full sound.

Note: For these functions to work, they must be supported by the Pioneer CD changer.

It sucks

Written By KrisO5000, Houston, TX on Wednesday, November 30, 2011

I enjoyed this system, although it was hard to navigate. I don't know if I would ever buy another Pioneer product because their customer service was horrible when I first started having problems with it. It sure would be nice if a company would stand behind a product that they sell, even if the product is a little over the warranty period. They could at least be helpful in troubleshooting, or at least refurbish it for a fraction of the cost.
Pros:
I loved that this stereo had the rear USB port and it looks sleek.
Cons:
This stereo worked great for the first couple of years. Then all of a sudden, the buttons don't work. I can't turn it off, I can't set my clock, etc. I also hated the preset feature of the radio, the difficult navigation of the iPod controls, and the difficult menu.

What happened to preset buttons?

Written By Hugo, Folsom, Ca on Saturday, March 07, 2009

At first the unit looked great in the car. The sound was impressive, then I asked, "how do I preset my FM stations?" You simply click the list button, scroll the knob to the dired preset number, then click the center button. But wait, while I am driving? The knob is so sensitive, if you click it in any direction other than center, it resets. Very annoying. Plus, if you want to "channel surf" you have to click the List button, scroll the dial to the preset number, then click enter. For each and every one. VERY ANNOYING! I looked around and it turns out that this is now the "popular" thing. I guess everyone wants to look like an iPod. Stupid. I used to be able to simply click numbers 1-6 for my preset. To set the preset, I simply held the number 1-6 for 3 seconds. That's it. I can do it while driving with my eyes closed (well, not with eyes closed, but you get the idea).

I returned the product to get the ONLY name brand unit that has preset buttons, the Alpine.

If you NEVER listen to the radio, or if you only listed to one radio station, then this receiver is perfect for you.

Amazing sound quality!

Written By Joey in TN, Harrogate, TN on Thursday, February 26, 2009

I replaced my old Kenwood KDC-316s cd player in my 2001 F-150 with the Pioneer DEH-P5000UB, and there is a night and day difference in the sound quality. I have some Infinity 5x7's in the doors with Dynamat, and a 150W 8" RS Bazooka bass tube behind the seat. I thought my Kenwood sounded good, but boy was I surprised when I installed the Pioneer HU and cranked it up! Just amazing sound quality. I am very impressed. My bass tube hits harder and cleaner thanks to the 4V pre-outs, and my door speakers project mids and highs with alot more detailed clarity and punch. I attribute that mostly to the built-in adjustable high/low pass filters which makes it possible to "tune" your speakers to your liking. I also ordered a Transcend 2GB thumb drive from Crutcfield to store all of my mp3 music files on. It connects directly to the USB plug on the back of the HU. I have close to 100 songs on it right now, but it will hold alot more. It does take some time to fiddle around with this HU to find out how everything works, but it's very easy to learn. It tells you how to do everything right there in the owner's manual, like how to turn demo mode and the faceplate security beeper off. All in all, this is the best car stereo I've ever had. Thanks Crutchfield!

Pioneer DEH-P5000UB

Written By , Nashville, GA on Friday, February 20, 2009

This is a very user friendly head unit. The USB controls are just what I was looking for. I am easily able to control my Flash Drives as well as my Ipod using this radio. The sound is very clean and the sound adjustments this unit offers is great. It did take me a few minutes to figure out the eq but once I did the sound is excellent. I have it paired with 4 Rockford Fosgate 6x8 speakers a Rocfkord amp and Rockford 10" Sub. I can't imagine needing anything more as far as sound.

WORST STEREO EVER!

Written By psylabs, wisconsin on Monday, February 16, 2009

my first complaint is, if a song comes on that you really like, you want to crank it up right? well with the way this stereo is set up, your thumb accidentally hits that nasty little "random" button! so there goes your song that you wanted to crank up. this has happened countless times to me. and if you hit the random button to shut it off. . . oh no, it just randomizes again. you have to get out the remote to shut off random. and the navigation is horrible! also, every time you shut off your car, this stereo beeps at you. why?! if there is a way to shut it off, i cant find it. and! when you shut off your car, it pauses your ipod but does not shut if off. so your ipod stays on pause for some reason and just drains its battery. lovely. . .
if i could rate this as a zero i would. more of a headache than it's worth.

USB Works great, Sounds great

I just had this radio installed. The FM tuner works great, it plays MP3s from USB and CD. -Sounds great. I saw that some people gave the radio bad reviews based on sounds. Mine sounds terrific. I don't know what planet they live on, just glad its not mine. ;-)

Great value, easy to use. Used install card. -no wait, they did a great job in Raynham, Ma.

Impressed

Written By Alan, Marietta, GA on Thursday, February 12, 2009

I just replaced my stock radio in my 98 civic, and this head unit made my speakers sound alot better. I'm gonna stick with the speakers I've got, and see if they work for me (or until i blow them, lol). Before i got this i was really convinced i needed new speakers, but the head unit was pretty shot. First stereo I've ever bought, and I'm impressed. They gave me everything i needed (except the antenna adapter), so i popped it right in. The dash mount kit even matched the color of my dash. I heard people say that they don't get clearance to pop it down, and put CDs in, but mine has just enough clearance. Not to mention I'm mostly gonna be using my ipod. The remote is confusing at first, but it's setup pretty well once you figure out how to work things. If you have playlists setup on your ipod, you won't have to worry to bad about scrolling through songs.

Great unit, with caveats

Written By Ron, Lincoln, NE on Wednesday, February 04, 2009

This is my first Pioneer deck, after nothing but Sony for the past 10 years. I've had this installed for a couple of weeks now. It is a full-featured unit, and I have the ability to select multiple audio settings. When an ipod is your main source, this is a major plus.

The caveats: One, it's a little more difficult to get this up and running. There's a lot of functionality. It's not overly intuitive and the instruction manual is only average. Two, the ipod functionality works well, but it's difficult with a large music collection to get from album to album or artist to artist. There's no quick search feature, so I'll likely need to set up different playlists to accommodate that.

I like the deck, but the caveats prevent me from rating it five stars.
