Our take on the Pioneer DEH-P5000UB

by Ken Nail
Pioneer

Why replace your factory radio?

Two good reasons - sound quality and cool features. A new car stereo offers power that's superior to most factory radios, along with more sophisticated tone controls. And most car stereos offer built-in or optional features that add safety and fun to life in your car, including inputs for your iPod or MP3 player, Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free cell phone calls, satellite radio or HD Radio reception, and connections for building an audio system in your car.

Pioneer's DEH-P5000UB CD receiver sports sharp looks, an informative, easy-to-read display, and plenty of options for playing all of your media. You can connect and control an iPod® or a variety of other devices through its built-in USB input. The clean-looking face features a 2-line display, with 16 characters per line for artist and title information, while the prominent control knob makes it easy to scroll through your music files and access the receiver's menus.

You'll find plenty of other audio options. The receiver plays MP3, WMA, and AAC files that you've burned to a disc, and you can connect other audio sources to the rear auxiliary input. Add satellite radio to the dedicated input and tap into the wide variety of music, news, talk, and sports that XM and SIRIUS offer. Make your drive safer by connecting Pioneer's optional Bluetooth® adapter — take your calls through your stereo, rather than fumbling around for a phone.

Adjust the sound with Pioneer's Easy EQ — it offers six preset sound curves for quick fixes, plus adjustable bass, midrange, and treble controls for custom tone shaping. The amplifier delivers plenty of power for accurate sound from your speakers, with built in high- and low-pass filters to optimize speaker performance. If you want to really get your ride rocking, use the stereo's three sets of preamp outputs to connect external amplifiers.

Note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver.

    Features
    External Device Controls

    Features

Overview: The Pioneer DEH-P5000UB is an AM/FM/CD receiver that can also play MP3, WMA, WAV, and AAC files on disc as well. It has a rear panel 3.5mm auxiliary input for portable devices, as well as a rear panel USB input for your iPod or other USB-based portable audio player or USB memory device. Additional accessories that are compatible with this unit include Bluetooth Audio and Bluetooth Telephone (when the optional Pioneer Bluetooth adapter is connected), XM or SIRIUS Satellite Radio (with an optional satellite radio tuner and antenna), and a multi-CD player. See section below on External Device Controls for details on compatibility.

CEA2006 Compliant: The power specifications for the DEH-P5000UB are compliant with the CEA2006 Mobile Amplifier Power Testing and Measurement standards from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). These standards were developed as a way to equitably compare power specs from model to model and between manufacturers. The power output specs for the DEH-P5000UB are as follows:

    • CEA2006 Specs: 14 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20Hz-20kHz, 1% THD-N)
    • Continuous Power Output: 22 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 50Hz-15kHz, 5% THD)
    • Maximum Power Output: 50 watts x 4 channels (or 50 watts x 2 channels at 4 ohms + 70 watts x 1 channel at 2 ohms for subwoofer)

MOSFET Amplifier: The DEH-P5000UB is equipped with a MOSFET amplifier. Compared to conventional power supplies, the MOSFET amplification circuit is smaller and more efficient, and it delivers increased power with less distortion and absolutely zero on/off switching noise. More power means louder and cleaner music at higher volumes because you're not pushing the limits of the amplification circuit.

Supertuner IIID AM/FM Tuner: The Supertuner IIID features Feed Forward Control, which avoids multi-path interference. This pre-detection of interference enables quick filter control and results in less distortion. In addition, the Supertuner IIID creates enhanced stereo during multi-path interference, unlike conventional tuners that collapse to mono. Digital processing reduces distortion, and improves Signal-to-Noise Ratio and stereo separation. Advanced analog technology improves signal processing sensitivity.

BSM (Best Stations Memory): The BSM (Best Stations Memory) function lets you automatically store the six strongest stations under preset buttons 1-6 of the currently tuned band. The tuner has 3 FM banks and 1 AM bank. You can store 6 presets for each bank giving you a total of 18 FM presets and 6 AM presets.

Local Tuning: Local seek tuning lets you tune in only those radio stations with sufficiently strong signals for good reception. There are 4 level of sensitivity for FM and two levels for AM. The higher settings allow reception of only the strongest stations, while lower settings let you receive progressively weaker stations.

MP3/WMA/WAV Playback: This unit can play MP3/WMA/WAV files recorded on CD-ROM, CD-R, and CD-RW discs in ISO9660 Level 1/Level 2, Joliet, and Romeo formats. MP3 files with a bit rate from 8-320 kbps, WMA files with a constant bit rate from 48-320 kbps, and WMA files with a variable bit rate from 48-384 kbps are supported. The unit is compatible with ID3 Tags and will display artist, folder, file, and album name, plus comments. Up to 8 directories, 99 folders and 999 files per disc are recognized by this unit.

AAC Decoding: This unit will playback AAC files encoded by iTunes recorded onto CDs, however files purchased from the iTunes Music Store (.m4p file extension) are not compatible. Tracks recorded at transmission rates of 16-320 kbps are playable on this unit.

Advanced Sound Retriever: The Advanced Sound Retriever automatically enhances compressed audio and restores the original richness of the recording. When Advanced Sound Retriever is on, the high frequency range is compensated to match the frequency response curve to the original sound. There are two available levels of the Sound Retriever effect.

EEQ (Easy EQ): The DEH-P5000UB is equipped with a 3-band parametric EQ with 6 preset EQ settings. You can boost or cut each frequency band by +/- 12dB at 2dB intervals. Features of the Easy EQ include:

    • Selectable Center Frequencies:
      • Low: 40, 80, 100, or 160 Hz
      • Mid: 200, 500, 1k, or 2k Hz
      • High: 3k, 8k, 10k or 12k Hz
    • Preset EEQ Settings: Powerful, Super Bass, Vocal, Natural, Custom, and EQ Flat
    • Selectable Q Factors: 2 Narrow, 1 Narrow, 1 Wide, and 2 Wide

Selectable Loudness Levels: Loudness compensates for deficiencies in the low and high frequencies at low volumes. You can choose from three levels of loudness:

    • Low: +3.5dB (100Hz), +3dB (10kHz)
    • Mid: +10dB (100Hz), +6.5dB (10kHz)
    • High: +11dB (100Hz), +11dB (10kHz)

List Button: The List button on the front panel allows you to the track title list, folder list, file list, preset channel list, or disc title list, depending upon the source. Once the List button is pressed, you can turn the multi-control knob to view each item on the list. To select the highlighted item, you can press the multi-control. This allows you to quickly make selections from most any source.

Auxiliary Input: The DEH-P5000UB is equipped with a rear panel 3.5mm stereo minijack auxiliary input for connecting external components, such as a portable MP3 player, DVD, or VCR. Once AUX 1 is selected as a source, you can change the source display of the input to any 10-character name. A second auxiliary device can be connected to this unit when an optional adapter is connected to the IP-Bus connector on the rear panel. Both Aux 1 and Aux 2 must be turned on in the setup menu in order to be selected as a source. See below for more information on the 2nd Auxiliary Input.

2nd Auxiliary Input Ready: In addition to the rear panel minijack Aux input (AUX 1), you can connect a second auxiliary component by connecting an IP-Bus/RCA connector. The CD-RB10 lets you connect one auxiliary component, and the CD-RB20 lets you connect an auxiliary component and a CD changer via the IP-Bus connector on the back of the head unit. The 10-character name of the connected auxiliary component can be entered into memory, and will appear as you cycle through the sources.

Subwoofer Output: The unit has a pair of dedicated non-fading RCA subwoofer outputs with a low-pass filter, phase adjustment, and output level. When the subwoofer output is turned on, you can select the frequency of the 18dB/octave low pass filter (50, 63, 80, 100, or 125 Hz), select the subwoofer phase (normal/reverse), and the subwoofer gain (+6 to -24).

Switchable Rear Channel/Subwoofer Output: The rear speaker outputs can be set to provide full range output with full fading capability, or they can be set to provide non-fading subwoofer (low-pass) output. When the rear speaker outputs are set to subwoofer mode, the rear preamp outputs also switch from full range to subwoofer outputs. When set for subwoofer operation, you can connect the rear speaker leads directly to two small 4-ohm passive subwoofers or a dual voice coil sub with 4-ohm voice coils. If you prefer to use a single 2-ohm subwoofer, you can connect the woofer to one set of speaker leads, leaving the other set of rear leads disconnected. The maximum output provided when a 2-ohm load is connected to one set of leads is 70 watts.

High Pass Filter: If you do not want low frequency sounds to play from the front or rear speaker outputs, you can turn on the 12dB/octave High Pass Filter. The HPF has a selectable cutoff frequency (50, 63, 80, 100, or 125 Hz). Only frequencies higher than those in the selected range are output through the speakers.

Bass Boost: The Bass Boost function raises the level of sounds lower than 100Hz. You can select a desired level of bass boost between 0 and 6.

Source Level Adjustment (SLA): This function lets you adjust the volume level of each source to prevent radical changes in volume when switching between sources. Settings are based on the volume level of the FM tuner, which remains unchanged. Each source can be independently adjusted from -4dB to +4dB.

Disc Naming: You can use the disc title input feature to store up to 48 CD titles in the unit's memory. Each title can be up to 10 characters long.

OEL Display: The DEH-P5000UB features a black background with a two-line blue Organic EL display, which takes advantage of MP3, WMA, iPod, XM Radio, and Sirius, plus CD Text-encoded discs. This large display makes it easy to read and cycle through the song title, artist, and other text used by these sources.

Ever Scroll: When the Ever Scroll feature is set to On, recorded text information scrolls continuously on the display. It will auto-scroll up to 64 characters. Set this feature to Off if you prefer the information to scroll only once.

Function Confirmation Tones: The receiver emits an audible beep tone each time a button is pressed. These function confirmation tones cannot be turned off.

Display Illumination/Clock Display: When the Clock Display has been turned on, pressing and holding the Source button turns off audio output, but the clock display remains on. When the Clock Display has been turned off, pressing and holding the source button turns the unit off completely. Even if you have turned the radio completely off you can view the clock display be pressing the clock button. The clock will then remain On until you turn it back Off. When the unit is On you can select between the clock display or the audio track/tuner display. When the unit is off but the ignition is on, the button illumination will light up when the vehicle's headlights are turned on.

Dimmer: To prevent the display from being too bright at night, the display is automatically dimmed when the car's headlights are turned on. You can turn the dimmer function On or Off. The orange/white illumination wire must be connected to the vehicle's headlight circuit in order for this feature to work.

Detachable Face Security: This unit features Detachable Face Security. If the front panel is not detached from the head unit within five seconds of turning off the ignition, a warning tone will sound. The warning tone can be turned off in the menu, if desired. A face-fixing screw is supplied for making the face non-detachable, if desired.

Note: No face case is included with this unit. An optional soft face case (item #142DFC2C) can be purchased for this unit.

Remote Control: The DEH-P5000UB comes with a wireless remote control (CXC8885). The remote allows you to control the volume, switch between sources, pause the CD, change the display, and adjust the audio. The attenuator button allows you to quickly lower the volume by about 90%, a function that cannot be performed from the front panel. The head unit also has a 3.5mm minijack on the back panel for connecting an optional wired remote control, such as the CD-MR70 or CD-MR80 (130CDMR70 or 130CDMR80). In addition, the PAC SWI-PS steering wheel remote interface is compatible with this head unit.

    External Device Controls

iPod Interface: The DEH-P5000UB can control and playback songs on an iPod. This unit supports only iPods with a standard Dock Connector. (Please see compatibility list below for your model and software version.) You can connect the iPod using the unit's USB input (a dock connector to USB cable, such as the one supplied with your iPod, or the optional 130CDIU50, is required). When connected via USB, you can choose to control the iPod from the head unit or the iPod itself. (This function only works on iPod classic, iPod touch, and 2nd and 3rd generation nano only. You can still change songs from the head unit, even when you are controlling the iPod manually.) You can perform multiple search functions, including playlist, genre, artist, and album searches. While connected and the ignition switch is set to ACC or ON, the USB connection will power and charge your iPod. The DEH-P5000UB is compatible with the following iPod models:

    • iPod video (5th generation)
    • iPod classic (80/120/160GB)
    • iPod nano (1st/2nd/3rd/4th generation)
    • iPod touch (1st/2nd generation)
    • iPhone/iPhone 3G

USB Input: In addition to connecting an iPod, the rear panel USB input allows you to connect a USB portable audio player or USB flash memory that is USB Mass Storage Class compliant.

Optional USB Adapter: If the head unit's built-in USB input is being used, you can connect a USB adapter (130CDUB100, sold separately) to the IP-Bus port to playback audio from a portable audio player that features a USB interface. This USB adapter features a IP-Bus pass-through for daisy chaining another IP-Bus compatible component.

Satellite Radio Ready: You can connect and control an external satellite radio tuner from XM or SIRIUS. The head unit is compatible with the GEX-P920XM (item number 130P920XM) Pioneer XM receiver. For Sirius there are two options; connect the SC-C1 SiriusConnect Universal Vehicle tuner and the CD-SB10 Pioneer Sirius Satellite Radio interface (package item number 700SIRPION), or use the Pioneer Sirius Satellite Radio interface (item number 130CDSB10) and the SIRIUS dock-and-play adapter (item number 607SCVDOC1) along with a compatible portable SIRIUS radio. A subscription to XM or Sirius, plus the proper antenna is required in order to receive satellite radio programming. The satellite radio tuners connect via the IP-Bus connector on the back of the head unit.

HD Radio Ready: This unit is compatible with the optional Pioneer GEX-P10HD HD Radio tuner (item number 130GEXP10H), allowing you to tune available HD Radio stations. HD Radio features high quality audio, FM multi-casting, and data services. The GEX-P10HD connects through the IP-BUS interface.

Optional Bluetooth Adapter: In addition, you can use this unit to control a CD-BTB200 Bluetooth adapter (130BTB200, sold separately) for your compatible Bluetooth mobile phone or Bluetooth portable audio player. The Pioneer CD-BTB200 Bluetooth Adapter allows you to make and receive calls wirelessly and hands-free on your Bluetooth-equipped cellular telephone through this Pioneer "Bluetooth Adapter Ready" head unit. The CD-BTB200 comes with a microphone for making and answering your calls. You can hear the other party through the vehicle's speaker system. The unit connects to the head unit via the supplied IP-BUS cable, and has an IP-BUS pass-through for daisy chaining another component.

Optional TV Tuner: You can use this unit to control an optional Pioneer TV tuner (sold separately).

IP-Bus Changer Controls: You can add an IP-Bus-compatible 6-disc or 12-disc Pioneer CD changer, and control it from the head unit. The unit feature the following CD-changer features.

    • ITS (Instant Track Selection) Programming: The ITS function can be used to program automatic playback of up to 99 tracks per disc for up to 100 discs. With changers sold before the CDX-P1250 and CDX-P650, up to 24 tracks can be stored in the playlist.
    • Direct Disc Selection: You can directly select discs 1-6 by pressing the corresponding button number on the front panel or remote. Discs 7-12 can be selected by pressing and holding the corresponding button number, such as button 1 for disc 7, etc.
    • CD Track Scan: The beginning of each track on the selected disc plays for about 10 seconds before moving onto the next track and continues until you make your selection.
    • CD Text Display: When used with a CD Text-compatible Pioneer CD changer, this unit will display the titles of CD Text encoded discs that are played in the changer. When playing a CD Text disc on a CD Text compatible changer, you cannot switch to the Disc Title Input mode. CD Text disc titles, artist names and track titles longer than 8 characters may be scrolled once to reveal the entire string of text by holding down the Display button.
    • CD Sound Quality Adjustment: Using the "COMP" (compression) and "DBE" (dynamic bass emphasis) functions, you can adjust the playback quality of the changer. Each function may be set to one of two levels or off. The "COMP" function compresses the audio signal to eliminate distortions caused by the imbalances between the loudest and softest sounds when played at high volumes. The "DBE" function boosts bass frequencies to give your music a more full sound.

Note: For these functions to work, they must be supported by the Pioneer CD changer.

    It sucks

Written By KrisO5000, Houston, TX on Wednesday, November 30, 2011

I enjoyed this system, although it was hard to navigate. I don't know if I would ever buy another Pioneer product because their customer service was horrible when I first started having problems with it. It sure would be nice if a company would stand behind a product that they sell, even if the product is a little over the warranty period. They could at least be helpful in troubleshooting, or at least refurbish it for a fraction of the cost.
    Pros:
I loved that this stereo had the rear USB port and it looks sleek.
    Cons:
This stereo worked great for the first couple of years. Then all of a sudden, the buttons don't work. I can't turn it off, I can't set my clock, etc. I also hated the preset feature of the radio, the difficult navigation of the iPod controls, and the difficult menu.

    What happened to preset buttons?

Written By Hugo, Folsom, Ca on Saturday, March 07, 2009
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

At first the unit looked great in the car. The sound was impressive, then I asked, "how do I preset my FM stations?" You simply click the list button, scroll the knob to the dired preset number, then click the center button. But wait, while I am driving? The knob is so sensitive, if you click it in any direction other than center, it resets. Very annoying. Plus, if you want to "channel surf" you have to click the List button, scroll the dial to the preset number, then click enter. For each and every one. VERY ANNOYING! I looked around and it turns out that this is now the "popular" thing. I guess everyone wants to look like an iPod. Stupid. I used to be able to simply click numbers 1-6 for my preset. To set the preset, I simply held the number 1-6 for 3 seconds. That's it. I can do it while driving with my eyes closed (well, not with eyes closed, but you get the idea).

I returned the product to get the ONLY name brand unit that has preset buttons, the Alpine.

If you NEVER listen to the radio, or if you only listed to one radio station, then this receiver is perfect for you.

    Amazing sound quality!

Written By Joey in TN, Harrogate, TN on Thursday, February 26, 2009
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I replaced my old Kenwood KDC-316s cd player in my 2001 F-150 with the Pioneer DEH-P5000UB, and there is a night and day difference in the sound quality. I have some Infinity 5x7's in the doors with Dynamat, and a 150W 8" RS Bazooka bass tube behind the seat. I thought my Kenwood sounded good, but boy was I surprised when I installed the Pioneer HU and cranked it up! Just amazing sound quality. I am very impressed. My bass tube hits harder and cleaner thanks to the 4V pre-outs, and my door speakers project mids and highs with alot more detailed clarity and punch. I attribute that mostly to the built-in adjustable high/low pass filters which makes it possible to "tune" your speakers to your liking. I also ordered a Transcend 2GB thumb drive from Crutcfield to store all of my mp3 music files on. It connects directly to the USB plug on the back of the HU. I have close to 100 songs on it right now, but it will hold alot more. It does take some time to fiddle around with this HU to find out how everything works, but it's very easy to learn. It tells you how to do everything right there in the owner's manual, like how to turn demo mode and the faceplate security beeper off. All in all, this is the best car stereo I've ever had. Thanks Crutchfield!

This is a very user friendly head unit. The USB controls are just what I was looking for. I am easily able to control my Flash Drives as well as my Ipod using this radio. The sound is very clean and the sound adjustments this unit offers is great. It did take me a few minutes to figure out the eq but once I did the sound is excellent. I have it paired with 4 Rockford Fosgate 6x8 speakers a Rocfkord amp and Rockford 10" Sub. I can't imagine needing anything more as far as sound.

    WORST STEREO EVER!

Written By psylabs, wisconsin on Monday, February 16, 2009

my first complaint is, if a song comes on that you really like, you want to crank it up right? well with the way this stereo is set up, your thumb accidentally hits that nasty little "random" button! so there goes your song that you wanted to crank up. this has happened countless times to me. and if you hit the random button to shut it off. . . oh no, it just randomizes again. you have to get out the remote to shut off random. and the navigation is horrible! also, every time you shut off your car, this stereo beeps at you. why?! if there is a way to shut it off, i cant find it. and! when you shut off your car, it pauses your ipod but does not shut if off. so your ipod stays on pause for some reason and just drains its battery. lovely. . .
if i could rate this as a zero i would. more of a headache than it's worth.

I just had this radio installed. The FM tuner works great, it plays MP3s from USB and CD. -Sounds great. I saw that some people gave the radio bad reviews based on sounds. Mine sounds terrific. I don't know what planet they live on, just glad its not mine. ;-)

Great value, easy to use. Used install card. -no wait, they did a great job in Raynham, Ma.

I just replaced my stock radio in my 98 civic, and this head unit made my speakers sound alot better. I'm gonna stick with the speakers I've got, and see if they work for me (or until i blow them, lol). Before i got this i was really convinced i needed new speakers, but the head unit was pretty shot. First stereo I've ever bought, and I'm impressed. They gave me everything i needed (except the antenna adapter), so i popped it right in. The dash mount kit even matched the color of my dash. I heard people say that they don't get clearance to pop it down, and put CDs in, but mine has just enough clearance. Not to mention I'm mostly gonna be using my ipod. The remote is confusing at first, but it's setup pretty well once you figure out how to work things. If you have playlists setup on your ipod, you won't have to worry to bad about scrolling through songs.

    Great unit, with caveats

Written By Ron, Lincoln, NE on Wednesday, February 04, 2009
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is my first Pioneer deck, after nothing but Sony for the past 10 years. I've had this installed for a couple of weeks now. It is a full-featured unit, and I have the ability to select multiple audio settings. When an ipod is your main source, this is a major plus.

The caveats: One, it's a little more difficult to get this up and running. There's a lot of functionality. It's not overly intuitive and the instruction manual is only average. Two, the ipod functionality works well, but it's difficult with a large music collection to get from album to album or artist to artist. There's no quick search feature, so I'll likely need to set up different playlists to accommodate that.

I like the deck, but the caveats prevent me from rating it five stars.

I have been using Pioneer products in my home and car for about 10 years. everything they make is great and this is no exception. This took me about 20 min. (35 with soldering the wiring harness) to install, and it couldn't work any better. controls my Ipod just like it should, and it has plenty of in and outs to connect anything else you have or want. and as always Crutchfield, makes it easy. With the best extras, instructions, and the very best support I've ever had.

I have been a Pioneer customer for many years and their decks just keep getting better and better. I also own a vehicle with Alpines iDA-X100 and I like this deck better. This deck makes it so easy to get to the song you want to listen to and the best part is you can do this with the included remote. The last Pioneer I owned only had 8 charaters on the screen and this one has two lines and 16 characters. Did I mention it looks awesome as well. A must buy for any IPod owner.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Overall i have been pretty happy with the unit. This is the first one ive ever
bought so im not sure whats normal or what to expect, but there were a
couple things i was dissapointed with. I think that there is a little bit of a
problem with the high frequencies being too loud sometimes, and even
adjusting the equalizer didnt seem to help. and also its a little bit of a
hassle when you are trying to scroll through the ipod menu, like for artists,
b/c there is no way that i know of to skip through letters or search or
anything, so it takes forever to get to ones in the middle. other than that i
think its really nice, it look awesome and is mostly easy to operate after
    you've read the manual.

    Another great product from Pioneer

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Recently bought this model to upgrade my factory system in my car. Produces a lot of power and contains a lot of cool features. Have gotten rid of the use of cds with this, just bought a 16 gb thumb drive and had the adapter that comes with the stereo ran to my glove box so no wires are in the way. The display is very slick and will put the title and artist of any song on your thumb drive right on the screen. The only drawbacks i see with this model is that there is no mute button on the faceplate but there is one on the remote. And the random feature won't let you skip to another song it just goes to the next song in that album, but these are all lil things. The blue looks really cool at night and I am able to turn my sub off whenever I want with the push of a button. The only difference between this one and the 7000 model is really just the bluetooth built in.

    Regret buying it

Written By Just call me, Moreno Valley, CA on Wednesday, January 21, 2009

Well unlike most reviews on here this is a real review.

I hate it. I installed it and it looks great. I bought it because I deliver pizzas and my oem stereo in my altima obviously couldnt play the ipod so I bought this stereo which said it was made for it. Well I come to find out that I can only navigate my music choice through the stereo which is no where near the ease of the ipod, im sure they were thinking aestheticly about it but its a hassle. The knob is huge and yet its so sensitive, every time i try to press it to choose an option it slightly tilts and goes into anther option and presses that, then i have to go back and try more carefully to push it down exactly in the center which is stupid for such a big knob.

But the worst thing is the sound quality. I'm no expert but I've tried messing around with the sound settings and nothing. They have too many options which for somebody like me means i can only mess up the sound. Even when I put it on "flat" I still get a stinging feeling in my ears like they wanna bleed from listening to it and thats in low volume. So I assume some high pitch frequencies are much louder than the rest. If I could do it again I wouldve just bought the radio adapter. This is the second pioneer product that sounds bad so Im never buying again.

TACOMA 2006 INSTALL - WORKS GREAT!

Written By dustin, Long Beach, CA on Thursday, January 08, 2009
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Install works great regardless of what the kit says on this stereo in a 2006 Tacoma. Just make sure you don't put the stereo mounting sleve in all the way, it needs to sit outside the black rim a little.

Stereo is easy to read with lots of characters, definitely bright enough in sunlight and the joystick is great once you get used to it a little bit. Bass and Treble controls could be a little bit easier to use and navigate.

Flip down face is easy to remove and install, but the Tacoma kit could be a little more stable as far as mounting goes. It's all plastic. Hope it holds up with dirt roads and lots of 4x4 use.

Installation was a snap in my 2005 Dodge Ram 1500. This is the second vehicle in which I have installed a stereo from Crutchfield and they make it, if not fool proof, then at least fool-resistant :-)

Navigation of the unit is straightforward after reading the manual and doing the obligatory head scratching for the first couple of days.

This unit will play virtually all file types from a USB flash drive--nice feature--but navigation between songs and albums takes some work.

Ipod navigation is straightforward and is probably the best way to go if you want to spend the additional $$$.

I would happily buy this unit again--it is one of the best out there.

The bluetooth kit is also a great item to add to this. Overall, if you don't want to spend alot of money on a headunit but, still want to get amazing features and awesome looks you should go with this pioneer.

I have been solving my audio needs by coming to Crutchfield.com. So far I have bought three sets of speakers and this CD unit from them and all I can say is thanks. This unit is great. Installation took me under 45 minutes to complete. Great display and sound output. I have been creating CDs through iTunes and my original CD unit was unable to play the AAC files from iTunes, I bought this unit to solve this problem and so I could display the disc title and song title while playing the disc. I also like the ability to add-on, such as an iPod, thumb drive, and Blue Tooth. Crutchfield.com is the only place I have gone to solve my audio needs and will be the only place I will go to in the future. Thanks Crutchfield.com!

    Takes Some Time To Learn

Written By PMHIII, Moultrie, GA on Tuesday, November 04, 2008
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this unit several weeks ago. I was instantly impressed with Crutchfield's customer service during the install. Not that it was very difficult, but I did need a few questions answered as I was installing the unit. After that, WOW! I have read some of the reviews concerning a lack of features such as pause buttons, FM presets, and Ipod shuffle modes. All of these are present in the receiver, if you figure out where to look. I will say the receiver is much easier to navigate through with the remote (which I mounted on my steering wheel with a little black Velcro for easy access). After about two weeks of using the unit I have figured everythging out and the sound quality I get from my Ipod is amazing. However, I will say that navigating to a specific artist is difficult when you have over 3000 songs, but I solved this by setting the genre on all of my songs to an alphabetical sequence (A-Z according to artist) and this made navigating with the head unit much easier using the genre listing. Overall, great looks, great price, great functions, and amazing customer service. I will be ordering again from Crutchfield (I gotta have a sub). Thanks Crutchfield!

    Nice Head Unit

Written By William, Biloxi, MS on Thursday, October 30, 2008
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this unit as a replacement for the stock radio/cd player in my truck. What really got my attention was the USB interface. I have a 4 gig Creative Zen with a 16 gig SD card. I set the MP3 player up as an external hard drive for this unit and was impressed. Especially with all of the settings (loudness, EQ settings) this unit offers. The only downside to that was I needed to unplug the MP3 player everytime I turned the truck off. That got annoying really fast. So I decided to look at the external hard drives. I found a 120 gig external hard drive. Loaded it up with about 25 gigs of music and replaced the MP3 player with the hard drive. It takes about 10 seconds to read the hard drive but eventually boots up. Now all I have to do is cycle through the source button until I hit the USB when I turn the truck off instead of removing it everytime. Installing this unit was a breeze. The most time consuming thing was crimping the wires together from the harnesses. In all it only took about an hour to install this bad boy...

Great Replacement for my stock unit

Written By Buknoy, Arlington, VA on Tuesday, October 28, 2008
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The stock CD player in my car ('05 Saab 9-2x; same as in same year and newer Subaru Impreza; Clarion stock) conked out and I needed a replacement ASAP for a long car trip. Ordered on a Saturday, head unit was at my office on MONDAY...I know I'm already in VA, but still, that was really, really fast (thanks Crutchfield!!!).

I will say this head unit is difficult to understand at first. It is "iPod-esque" with its knob and selecting under-menus through a jog-wheel then selection, more jogging, etc...it took over a week to understand, but I am used to it now.

Wasn't sure if this would work with iPhone as compatability is not listed; it definitely does! You can even leave it on phone mode, instead of airplane mode. When someone calls, the music pauses, and feedback isn't bad or often. I like the long USB cord that is included, and I also chose this cause the USB port isn't oddly sticking out of the front. To control either thru head unit or iPod is a nice touch.

I'm somewhat tech savvy, but I still feel like some of the features and settings are too complicated and unnecessary. I haven't even messed with the EQ, other than to turn down the bass, and really, even my stock speakers sound fine and don't really need to mess with it.

All in all, I really like this head unit and I think anyone who's looking for something iPod ready or the ability to read off a thumb drive, this is a great option. Great price, easy to install, clean look, great sound!

    Somewhat disappointing

Written By Ryan, Cincinnati, OH on Monday, October 20, 2008

    Pros:

    - Looks very nice especially at night.
    - Has lots of menu options and extensive custom equalizer.
    - I love that when using my iPhone I can choose between controlling the music via the iPhone itself or the head unit.
    - If you have a sub, you'll appreciate the high- and low-pass filters and the dedicated "SW" button that gives quick access to the sub controls.

    Cons:

    - NO PAUSE BUTTON. The biggest, most unforgivable flaw. I can't imagine how the designers decided to exclude this obviously important button, and instead slapped some of the most useless buttons around the knob instead (a button for the sound retriever? Really?). You have to fumble around for the non-backlit remote or dive into the menu to pause my music.
    - The screen glares like a mirror.
    - When the faceplate is pressed on near the top, it pushes in slightly (because it's a fold-down face). Not a problem, really, but it makes it feel somewhat cheap.
    - No preset station buttons. I don't listen to the radio much anymore, but it still would be nice to have them there.

This unit just really needs more buttons overall...

    Very Expandable Receiver!

Written By Chris, La Verne, CA on Sunday, September 14, 2008

Bought It 2 days ago after much research. Already a Pioneer owner, wanted to upgrade. It is Pretty cool. Very expandable. With my SAT/Ipod adapter(which puts both through one cable), The USB input is free for my 8GB Flash Drive which works great(tons of music). There are 2 additional aux inputs in back (For dvd audio or another indy controlled Ipod/mp3 player, let passenger control music). If you include the CD player and the Radio, that's 7 DIFFERENT SOURCES! Unit looks GREAT in my dash, Love the blue light. Controls are actually easy to use once you read and play with them. I figured it out without the manual for most stuff..No skipping through random tracks with Flash drive my only complaint. Otherwise....I LOVE IT!!!

    Try a portable hard drive....

Written By James, Jarrell, TX on Sunday, August 31, 2008
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I own a 2004 Tahoe without Onstar and no Bose. Thanks to Crutchfield
once again for letting me know about the Metra VT-GMRC-01. The chime is
extremely loud and I wrapped it in electrical tape twice instead of cutting
the connection on the circuit board.
I reformatted my Western Digital 60GB portable hard drive for FAT32 as I
found this head unit does not like NTFS. If you set your folders up well on
your drive, searching (with the remote control or the big button on the face
plate) is very easy. The 59inch USB extension allowed me to route my drive
to be hidden in the glove box.
I also learned when you switch sources from tuner to USB, it will pick up
    where it left off playing.
I did do some light manual reading as I found that you need to turn
your sources off to change time and turn AUX1 off since I am not using
it. If you plug in the USB, it will automatically read it. I did find
that when swaping from an 8GB flash drive to my 60 GB drive, the read
time was slower, but not enough to complain about. It obviously had more
    data to read.
The biggest down side for me was the random function. While it has no
problem with as many folders as you want to make looking for the next
random song, if it plays a song you don't care to listen to at that time,
when you forward to the next sing, it will go to the next song in the folder
instead of the next random song. I do love that pushing one button turns
random on and off. It is a fantastic unit.

    Nice HU, Nice Price

Written By Jeff S., FWB, Fl. on Friday, August 29, 2008

This is a very nice, sleek, quality Pioneer product. I cannot comment on all its functions such as USB and other specialty capabilities,,,, Nor what this unit is capable of without the use of an amp, sub, etc....I simply wanted a quality Tuner/CD player with lots of "sound-shaping" abilities and quality/clarity of sound.....well this is it- and more. I have been a Pioneer fan since my teens. This unit should solidify Pioneers commitment to making "The Good Stuff" to anyone who has not purchased Pioneer in awhile. There is a very wide range of EQ, Custom EQ, 'Loudness', Bass boost, MP3 "frequency boost", Subwoofer connectability, Etc, Etc.....AND, it looks super sharp in my trucks dashboard-----it functions AND sounds great! I also felt the need to write a review to share my views on what appears (according to some reviews) to be the downside of this model-------- ease of use......as mentioned I don't use the USB connection or other such functions, BUT, after spending approx. 1 hr. with unit and manual, I feel confident navigating through the menu(s)........Read the manual OR be confused for days------ its no more simple OR complicated than that with this model. I would also mention briefly that if you happen to have a system that incorporates amps, subs, etc., this is compatible straight out of the box......just spend time with the various built in shaping capabilities. Would (and have) recommend to friends.

First off all, Pioneer is one of the best brands on the market now. The installation process was simple enough. I like the sub and sound options that come available with it. You can't beat this CD deck. The 3.5 mm and USB option are great. I tend to not even use the 3.5 mm jack. The only down side is shuffeling through the USB files, but it good.

Always been a Pioneer fan, and this unit is no letdown, either. I bought it for my 2K Sebring JXI convertible, and is pretty much perfect. Only thing to remember - if you are using the usb to hook up to your flash drive, make sure the drive is formatted FAT32, or else you will get very erratic behavior. Other than that, no flaws!

Lots of Features, Complicated to Master

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought one of these for my twenty year old son. I Liked the way it looked and sounded. So I bought one for myself. It was not compatible with my 4th Generation iPod. So I bought a new iPod classic. The unit works great with the new iPod. The feature are many and the sequence for controlling the features is somewhat complicated. I have a challenge to learn to use all of them efficiently. When I get all the features mastered I am sure I will be very happy with it.

Looks & sound, interface not bad

Written By Anonymous, Centennial, CO on Sunday, August 03, 2008
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Some are down on the interface of the Pioneers. My experience is that most things are intuitive. Even with the larger dial it can be a bit tough to navigate the menus. The remote makes the unit much easier to use on the road. One complaint: setting up station presets is very much not obvious to me. I can usually figure out most interfaces.

On the plus side, however, the unit looks fantastic, very clean and elegant unlike the train wreck designs of some modern head units. The iPod interface works beautifully, very easy to find & select music. This is much, much better than using iPod with aux cable which I was doing previously. Charging the iPod at the same time is an extra bonus. Had to buy the cable extra.

Sonically, it's a good unit tho I haven't done A B testing or anything. Clean, distortion free power up to higher volume levels enough to overcome my loud Jeep's noise floor. :) Tuner is quite good as well in terms of sound quality.

In all, I'm extremely happy with this deck and the money was well spent -- comparing all the features, you get more expandability and capability out of the box for same price as other units (e.g., Alpine).

Overall, I am happy with the look and layout on the unit. The setup is a little tricky. I had to read the manual. Once the setup was done, I found it
fairly easy to use. I like the 3x6 pre-sets for XM tuner in addition to 3x6 pre-sets for FM. The radio seems sensitive to outside interference signals.
Even my cell phone causes weird noises if held too close. The radio tuner is ok, but I believe my OEM radio had better reception. I was very pleased
    with Crutchfield service.

EXCELLENT STEREO, GLAD I TRUSTED PIONEER FROM THE PAST

Written By Victor, Cliffside Park, NJ on Wednesday, July 02, 2008
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It's been some 15 years since I've been in the market for a car stereo, and the last time I was interested enough, I had a Pioneer cassette deck and it was great then. So after blowing some capillaries between the Alpine 9884 and the Pioneer 5000UB, I decided to go with what I know.

Crutchfield not only promised this in 3 days, but it came in 2!! Everything I needed for installation was included and NOT ONE item missing. Had it professionally installed and the sound has me wishing I can replicate this in my home theater. I might have virgin ears, but this stereo gave my factory speakers new life. Probably the best fit for my 2004 Toyota Corolla.

SIRIUS satellite sounds as good as FM, no choppy sound or lost signals. One MINOR letdown is that I cannot pause or rewind live SIRIUS broadcasts, but that's something I should have researched further and this should not discourage anyone from considering this stereo.

iPod sounds great and SUPER LOUD with the volume at 20 (of 62). This aspect couldn't have been more important to me, as I've been a slave to those pathetic Monster iPod FM transmitter adapters for the last 6 years.

In summary, Pioneer DEH-P5000UB is an excellent choice for the price if you want a seemless integration of iPod, satellite radio and superior sound.

One question stays in my mind, however. How much better can the Pioneer FH-P8000BT and Pioneer DEH-P9800BT sound?

What can I say about this receiver that has not already been said? It's
unbelievably great! It was easy to install took about 2 hours and with all
the extras that Crutchfield provides you can't go wrong period. I am so
impressed with this company that without a doubt they will be my go to
place online for my electronic needs.
Let's start with service first. I ordered this receiver Sunday afternoon and
received an email later that day that it had already shipped.WOW and all the
extras that you'll need to install the receiver in your vehicle hardware and
wires provided. The only thing you'll need is the USB cable for your IPOD
hookup and you should have that from getting your IPOD in the first place if
not order it here, 4th was the shipping I received my package Tuesday at
    10am 1 ½ days not bad.
The Pioneer P50000UB has so many features and is so customizable that
you'll be playing with it a long time before you figure out all the functions. I
bought this mainly for my IPOD and maybe will listen to some talk radio. So
if you're in the market for a great receiver and have an IPOD then grab this
goodie you won't be sorry. It took 2 hours to install, but if I were more
organized I could have done it in 30 minutes it's that easy to hook up.
Thanks Crutchfield for great products and great service.

    Sleek Design, Awesome Sound

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Let me first start by saying just how amazing crutchfield is in their communication, relaibility, service, and products. There is no other site on the internet I would rather order from. They are just unbeatable all over. But anyway lets get to the merchandise......incredible. This is one of the first recievers I have bought even though I have been modifying my own sound system with the stock radio in my mustang. I understood how to install them but have never had the chance to finally buy one and put one in. There is such a difference in overall sound and acoustics. The difference in sound with my single Alpine Type-R 12" is incredible. Sounds as if I upgraded my amp and woofer. The look of this deck is uncomparable and it doesnt look cheap and plasticy. It is also darker than what I thought, which is definitely a plus with most vehicles. Two features that I love are all the different EQ's and audio tweakings with all the subwoofer settings and the high and low pass filters built in--an awesome idea and a very nice feature to have. One of the last things I loved about my order is how crutchfield includes the mounting kit and wiring harness adapter free! Would recommend to anyone!

    Great Product!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I use this unit almost exclusively to play WMA disks created on my PC. It works great except for two little nits:

    1. The 16-segment display will not display an ampersand (&) which occurs in a surprising number of album and song names. Since there is a distinctly recognizable 16-segment version of the ampersand, this must be an oversight.

    2. It does not have a "skip" function when playing tracks randomly. This should be a trivial addition to the whole range of Pioneer products (none of them seem to have it) to permit me to skip over the current randomly selected song and go to the next randomly selected song. Just nice to do sometimes...

Great sound, and easy to use once set up. Now every member of our family has Pioneer products in our vehicles.

Purchased this deck to replace a failing Sony Xplod. This deck is 100 times better than the Sony was. Sound is fuller, with more options for EQ.

iPod control is very nice. I have only listened to a CD once since purchase, just to test it out.

Would recommend this to anyone looking for good sound, a lot of features at a good price.

Love the radio, simple face awesome features. Easy layout easy to use, my only gripe is that it doesn't seem to pump enough power to my factory speakers. Don't think twice, get this!!!!

I own a 99 maxima with a Bose factory radio installed. It served me well till last year around september when the CD player died. So I went 8 months without a CD player. My amazing girlfriend, soon to be wife, bought me this on the 10th of May and I installed it on the 14th. Let me tell you that cannot go wrong with this radio! It blows the bose out of the water....100 times over!! The sound is incredible!! I have the sound adjusted to the way I always wanted it and the factory speakers sound WAY better!! I can't believe the sound I am getting! All the features you will need and it is simple and nice! It even reads the tracks on the cd if the cd has that information on it to display! The CD's sound amazing, as so the radio! You can even give your cd's title names, which I thought was cool.

Crutchfield tech support was really helpful. If you have a 99 maxima, make sure when you use the scosche amplifer gain control, to make sure that you connect the blue power antenna and system remote(blue/white) wire together and connect both to the blue wite on the pioneer wiring harness!! I did everything except that right and I had no sound! Thanks Crutchfield for your help!

If you need an awesome deck that can be expandable and not pricey, this is the deck to get! It even comes with a USB extension cable. You will not believe the difference in sound when you take that old Bose out!

Written By Shawn, Pasadena TX on Saturday, May 03, 2008
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a very nice receiver. The controls are a little different, but it didn't take long to learn. I added a 6.5" 200W Bazooka subwoofer to my truck a few days before I received this product. Changing from an average Sony CD Receiver to this Pioneer transformed the sound quality of the Bazooka and the factory speakers!! The iPod control is great. You can also switch back and forth between the receiver controlling the iPod or controlling the iPod from itself if you want. The high-pass filter is great blocking the bass from the factory speakers, and the low-pass filter is great for the subwoofer.

I would definitly recommend this unit!

    Great upgrade from factory stereo

Written By Mike, Boston, MA on Friday, April 18, 2008
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This replaced the stock Monsoon head unit from my '02 VW Golf and so far I'm very happy with the change. First thing I noticed was how much better the bass response and overall sound quality was. iPod integration with my iPod Touch is good but some features take a little getting used to. If you decide to control the iPod from the H.U. scrolling through artists is a little slow but tolerable. I also installed the Sirius tuner which is great. It's nice to have one unit capable of controlling multiple sources, it was a pain trying to find a place for the separate satellite radio, ipod, CD's etc. This clears up a lot of clutter which is good for me.

The biggest drawback for me is the menu navigation. Sometimes the menus are not exactly intuitive and the multi function knob can be a bit of a pain while driving. I find that I use the remote a fair amount if I need to do serious tweaking while on the road. Also, I wish there was a way to adjust the brightness of the display. It will dim when you turn on the lights but it would be nice to have a way to adjust it manually.

The install went well once I realized that my car doesn't have switched power on the factory harness. (VW has to make it hard sometimes) Once I figured out a way around that and ran a wire to the cigarette lighter for the dimmer all systems are a go.

    Pioneer DEH-P5000UB

Written By Tom, Columbus, Ohio on Monday, April 14, 2008

    With buying my new
    (to me) '01 Blazer I
    knew from past
    experience with a
    factory CD player,
    it would need to be
    replaced. I chose
    this unit by
    plugging in my car
    info, and with
    advice from tech. I
    was wanting to
    install the
    DEH-P6000UB but was
    told it wouldn't
fit. Oh contrare! The 6000UB will fit
    with room in the
    back to plug in AUX,
    USB and RCA's. If I
had to do it over I
    would have gone with
    the P6000UB. No
    problems at all with
    the installation of
    the DEH-P5000UB.
    Learning to use the
    controller was a bit
    of a challenge. The
    manual is a little
    vague about some
    operations. But with
    repeated use it gets
    pretty easy to
    scroll through the
    menus. It works
    great with USB flash
    (thumb) drives, and
    with an older Sirius
    unit thru the FM.
    The previous owner
    had installed after
    market speakers so
    music sounds
    excellent! I was
    disappointed to see
    the reviews on
    Pioneer's CD-BTB200
    Bluetooth Adapter. I
    was hoping to be
    able to use my new
    LG Muzic as another
    source of tunes as
    well as having a
    hands free phone.
    Apparently that
    bluetooth adapter
    has a lot of
    problems with most
    phones. So that will
    wait until Pioneer
    builds a better
    bluetooth adapter.
    The DEH-P5000UB is a
    great buy for under
    $200.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I put it in my 02 Celica and it sounds good. I have a 6 inch bazooka with and it and its still thumping. Notice the blue is more of a turquoise then the typical LED blue. In some pictures it looks darker then others so I assumed that the light was just making it look more turquoise. I have had no problems yet, it takes a little time getting use to how the deck is set up, mainly because it diffrent from others. The dimming option is nice, but difficult to do if you have a small car. Good luck trying to connect the wire the dimming hook up/wire for your lights. The USB conection is great, I drilled a hole on the back of the extra plastic part and to feed it through the back so that I do not have a bunch of wires all over, looks nice.

Great Sound, Not Super Easy to Use

Written By Mike, Spokane, WA on Monday, March 31, 2008

I purchased this unit to install into my motorhome. I had replaced the stock
speakers with some Blaupunkt units last fall and was excited to mate them
to a decent reciever. The sound is spectacular. The improvement made
with the Pioneer unit over the OEM receiver is astounding.

Operationally, though, I'm more than disappointed. Two big drivers were
    (1) iPOD control and (2) Ease of use. For 1, I discovered after I recieved
the unit that it only controls iPODs post generation 5. Of course, I have a
gen 4 iPOD. I don't believe that this was obvious in the literature or the
writeups. Also, I find the control knob very hard to use. Push in and push
to the side takes some getting used to. After playing with it for a day, I stil
l haven't gotten the hang of it. Also, I don't think that the menus are all
that intuitive. A last grip is that it doesn't display RDS information from
the FM radio stations. Wow. A high end unit that doesn't do that shocks
    me.

Doing it again, I would've gotten the Pioneer because the sound is
spectacular and it has one of the best looks of any car reciever I have ever
seen. However, I would've gone ahead and gotten the '4000' instead of
the '5000'. The benefit of 2-line display is marginalized when there is no
RDS on radio and the iPOD limitations on the particular 4th generation unit
that I have force me to use the audio input only (unless I want to buy an
    additional expensive adaptor).

    Terrific Raido-Great Features

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I just installed one of these in my RAV4 two weeks ago. Sooooooooo...much better than OEM radio. Much better sound and sensitivity. And the joystick type rotating control knob is very handy after a little getting used to it. Displays and menus are very nice. And the face is relatively clean and does not have the juke box look of many of the car stereos I looked at.

Even with the stock speakers, the sound is great.

I used the Crutchfield kit and install was very easy. I brought the USB cable and AUX input cable into the little stowage compartment after I slightly enlarged an exiisting opening in the rear corner.

The Pioneer manual is a little clunky but useable. Took about 2 hours to do it all.

I don't have an iPOD but used a USB thumb drive to store ripped CDs and downloadeod music files. The radio works great with it and shows artist/folder/song/track info on the main display and works very nicely.

I thought the remote was overkill but after using it for a short time it really is great. Small, thin and very easy to use. Sits well in the little phone pocket in the center console area.

Crutchfield was great with info and I ordered it online on Sunday afternoon and it was on my front porch 47 hours later. Give them a look.

What a nice tuner. Very sharp, blended into the car dash easily, the directions were again impecable that came with the unit. This is now two that I have purchased and placed in cars for my kids since Christmas and I wouldn't want to get them from anybody else. Everybody else nickel and dimes you on the stuff you need to install the radio. Ths pioneer product keeps up with the current music storage products (i.e. Ipod) and my son had his working through the unit before I finished placing the dash trim back in place. Pioneer, Crutchfield, and Crutchfields customer support are second to none.

I bought a Pioneer car stereo because I wanted an excellent FM radio receiver, and I'm not disappointed. The "Super Tuner" is absolutely excellent. It was reasonably easy to install with using the supplied connectors and brackets - worked right away. I gave it 5 stars from my own personal viewpoint, but some may find this thing quite complicated to use. I work with computers all day and am comfortable with the zillion options on this thing, but I suppose it could be daunting to some persons. I'm very pleased with it, and it's a joy to use. The modular accessory concept is very cool too - I also have the HD radio adapter, and FM HD radio is amazing.

this unit is one of the best. it is a very sharp looking reciever and the ipod cable is tight. i hooked up an 800watt amp and 2 400 watt subs and this blows away any other system out there. it made the door speakers sound 100% better and the oel display does not wash out and is bright even in the sunlight. the remote controlls everything from subs to menue to ipod.
i would recommend this unit to anyone who is looking for a awesome radio for a great price. well worth every cent and crutchfield made installation a snap. it only took a half hour to install it. i had a few questions and called teck support and they gave me the instructions in a snap. again this is an awesome unit!!!!!!!!

Very good - a few complaints

Written By Martin, Baltimore, MD on Thursday, March 13, 2008
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a very good value for the quality of the system.

    Pros:
    Sound quality - clean, powerful.
Style - clean face, few buttons.
iPod interface - intuitive, great sounds.
Sirius - great sound, 18 available presets.

    Cons:
Display - not enough room to display all the necessary info on one screen. This is my chief complaint. In the Sirius mode, you get two lines of data - and the word 'Sirius' takes up one of the lines! I'd like to see Station and Artist, or Station and Song, or Artist and Song. But I get one field and have to toggle through the rest. I don't know if the extra $60 for the P6000 are worth it for just the display improvement, but I'd definitely consider it. Bass - the bass is strong, but I found it difficult to find a good balance - the available preset EQ settings either have too little or too much bass. It might require delving into the custom equalizer, but I haven't gotten around to that yet. I also only replaced the rear speakers, so I may be reacting to one set of good speakers, and one older (stock) set.

Conclusion: All is all, it's another quality Pioneer deck. It looks fantastic, and the iPod integration is better than I could have hoped. If the display showed more information, I'd give it 5 stars without question.

    Works with iPhone

    Installed my entire
    system myself in
    about 8 hours. When
    I plugged my iPhone
    in it gave me the
    option of
    controlling music on
    the receiver or on
    the iPhone. Very
    cool! It has plenty
    of power for my
    small pickup and
    sounds great. I
    also installed
    hands-free bluetooth
    with CD-BTB200 and
    that works great
    too! Many features
    are limited like it
    won't transfer the
    phone book or save
    numbers but at least
    my hands are free.

    I also installed the
    free-after-rebate XM
    radio kit. Now I
    have a fully
    featured mobile
    listening
    experience. It has
    only been in for a
    day now so I will
    leave another review
    if anything changes.

    Great Unit

Written By buddy, Milwaukee, Wi on Thursday, March 06, 2008
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have had my receiver in for about a week now and think it is a really nice
    unit.
It is nice to have my XM and iPod controlled from one place. It replaces my
    SkyFi2
    and Drive + Play.

    Pros:

Controls all my peripherals, iPod, XM, USB. It has an Auxiliary port in the
    back.

It has 3 preamp out puts (front, rear, sub), CD player plays mp3 WMA AAC
    files.

Lots of audio controls. Looks good and seems like I will be able to read the
    display
even with the top down. If you want it to play SD cards get a USB adapter
    and I
am sure you are good to go.

    Cons:

The biggest complaint I have so far is with the XM display.

The top line of text always says XM tuner. I would like it to print out the
    band on the
top and the song title underneath it. Also I can't punch in a number to pick
    an XM
station. That kind of stinks too. Really the only cons I can say are on the
    satellite
    radio side.

All in all it is a pretty darned nice radio for the price. I do hope some of the
    accessories
come down in price (blue tooth & steering wheel controls). All in all it is a
    nice radio.

    System info:

I highly recommend picking this sucker up if you're interested in steering away from cds. I really like the fact that i can plug any usb thumb drive into it and it'll play the songs. I dont have an ipod so i cant comment on that. I also use the auxiliary input in the back with a mini stereo connector i've routed to the front of the dash. this allows me to play music off of my phone or my friend's ipods. The only thing i dont like about it is the control. Whenever i press the scroll button in the center it tends to press to the sides or top or bottom. Also the options in the menu are laid out kind of strangely. I usually just use the remote for controlling the stereo. I still really recommend this thing. I dont have to keep any cds in my car at all now.

    Awesome Stereo, awesome price.

Written By Lex, Baltimore, MD on Monday, March 03, 2008
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I Bought this deck to ease my custom stereo build. The factory stereo was great, but just didn't cut it for aftermarket ad-ons, Subs, amps, Ipods, Etc. I don't usually jump on new electronic products until they have proven their worth, but I decided to take a chance with the Pioneer DEH-P5000UB head unit seeing how I had a Pioneer Amp powering my Subwoofer, why not. Also I wanted a unit that would easily hook up, control, and charge my Ipod. It did the job well. Most Stereos listed require purchase of additional adapters and or cables. The Pioneer came already installed. Plug it in and go. You can even program what you want the display to refer to your plug-in as by name. Also, the extra audio inputs, USB plug-in, and subwoofer controls were icing on the cake. My only gripe is the USB slot only works with the IPOD...so far. There might be a way to program or change it, but I'm so satisfied with the Pioneer deck right now, that's not even a real problem. If you own an Ipod that you want to play in your car but dont want to break the bank, get yourself one of these. You'll love it!

The install was super easy i think i got it done in less than 45 minutes from start to finish with the included dash kit and wiring harness not to mention the step by step instructions!!!!!

This is very nice deck for the money. Lots of features ex. customizing sound, sub controls etc. The downfall of this deck is the degree of difficulty getting to each menu to make necessary sound adjustments. Nevertheless I am very happy w/ my purchase and it sounds great. Crutchfield's instructions made it very easy to install myself and saved me a lot of money.

    Pretty Awesome!

Written By Ahmad, Alexandria, VA on Monday, February 25, 2008
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

First deal done with crutchfield and first time installing a stereo, both done with great satisfaction and ease. Crutchfield is great with both its deals and products/servicies. The instruction sheet and additional supplies Crutchfield gave me with this stereo helped out a lot. I had no experience with all of this, but suprisingly, I was done in an hour.

The stereo itself is both good looking, and simple to use. No hassle of a million buttons or a million function stickers. Matches my '04 Honda Civic Sedan dash pretty well. Also, the lighting isn't too bright and comes with a handy remote.

The AUX input along with the USB input are great, but they are in the back. I was hoping for an extention cable for the AUX to come in the box but there wasn't any, although there was an extention cable for the USB. Since these connections are on the back, I bought the AUX cable from Monster and drilled a hole in the In-Dash-Reciver Kit thus allowing the cable to extend to the front where I could plug in my MP3 player. A little note for those who are picky about volume knobs, this one is a bit agitating since it feels weak when its used, but its well supported, and you can always use the remote.

Overall, great for people who don't want to deal with millions of buttons while driving, pumps good highs and lows in my speakers, and has expandability. Great buy!

Great sound and options for the price, difficult controls

Written By Jason, Seattle, WA on Sunday, February 24, 2008
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

    PROS:

    * Great sound quality
    * Clean look, no dancing colored lights or animations
    * Good EQ control, even if only 3 bands
    * Good AM/FM reception
    * Decent ipod controls (I have a 5th gen 30gb)
    * Remote is useful
    * The list and display buttons are useful
    * two line display is great for showing song information
    * nice price for quality and features

    CONS:

    * Minimum 3 knob pushes to pause?! (or use the remote)
    * Multifunction knob takes some getting used to
    * Even at "dimmed" light level, display is still quite bright (you can flip the face down, still listen to music and the display shuts off)
    * Ipod control is far from perfect...no fast scrolling through lists, very slight pause in many functions (such as skipping to the next song)
    * no HD radio or even the option for it (my favorite part of the JVC radio)
    * dedicated "shuffle" button will turn on "shuffle all songs" on the ipod but pressing it a second time won't turn off the shuffle but simply redo the shuffle

I purchased both this unit and a JVC KD-HDR1. I returned the JVC mainly because of very annoying noise the JVC was picking up from my ipod.

This Pioneer unit makes my stock 6.5" speakers sound GREAT! I can't believe my ears sometimes. It also controls my ipod fairly well, though I'll never be scrolling through the artist list (the 3000+ song list I wouldn't even do on the ipod itself).

Installation in my mk4 jetta wasn't too difficult. The hardest part was making room for the wires. I was able to shove most of them down into the lower compartment (where the air circ controls are). Crutchfield said I would have to cut out the radio support in the rear. I didn't have to but I did hacksaw a very small piece of the rear support to make room for the Pioneer's wiring harness (where it connects to the unit). It was a tight fit but it looks good now. Display colors don't match perfectly (a slightly different blue color) but it's good enough for me.

Note to VW owners: If you're removing the stock radio and also have a factory CD changer that you want to remove, be sure to eject the discs out of the changer before you disconnect the stock radio! Probably applies to other stock makes as well.

There are many other very small things I would enjoy being able to change such as renaming the EQ profiles. You can change the profiles (including one named "CUSTOM") but not the names of them. I wished the unit remembered where I was on a previous ipod menu (as the ipod remembers). I wish the ipod integration worked more like the ipod itself, but that seems to be a common complaint regardless of what brand or model of head unit. For the price I am more than happy with the product.

I don't plan to use the bluetooth (optional) feature so I can't comment on that.

Crutchfield continues to impress me with their service, return policy and installation freebies which is why I keep being their customer for many years now.

iPod deck I was looking for

Written By Hybridsol, Delaware on Sunday, February 17, 2008
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The last time I bought a stero was about eight years ago, so I was a little put off by some of the technology out there... having received a Nano as a gift, I needed a deck to play it without wading through menus, and one that would work without issues. This is IT! The unit is straightforward to install, nothing new... I don't have a sub or an amp, but the sound is still clean and powerful. I think it was 11 wires. The iPod controls are very easy as others have said. The "list" button brings up where you are (artist, album, etc.) and you either go into or out of the menu structure, just like on the iPod itself. Hit "list" again, and it starts from where you were last. There is a direct "shuffle" button on the face. When you turn off the car, it even picks up where you left off! The iPod can be controlled by the deck, or at the iPod. I have never experienced significant "lag" of the iPod, except when the unit first powers up (about 1 second until it reads the database). I can't express enough how easy this unit is to use with an iPod! It comes with a USB extension cord as well. The dial on the front is more raised than it appears in the pictures (good) and it has FIVE directions, up, down, left, right, and "IN"... it has a good feel, and I never push it the wrong way. The EQ adjustment is easy to use, mostly because of the front dial... just click over to the freq to adjust, and then turn the dial to set it. All of the settings and menus follow the same logic so you never feel lost. Add the remote which has direct access buttons, and it's even easier.

All said this blows away my expectations of how a deck works woth an iPod, I'll never use CD's in my car again!

Mounted in a 2001 Civic EX... pretty good but still testing

Written By Jamey, Washington DC on Thursday, February 14, 2008
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I took a leap of faith with this unit since it had only one review. I was looking for a similar unit with USB and Ipod control, but the Kenwoods and Sony's seemed to have too many complaints. Then Pioneer released this series with USB. I've liked Pioneer in the past, and I was hoping they read the compaints about their competition and improved upon them when they designed their latest. The sound is really nice even on my stock OEM speakers. Note that I have no amp or SWoofer. The multicontroller knob works smoothly once you get the hang of it. (I'd rather have individual knobs but those don't seem to be an option anymore). The look is simple and clean,,, not a Las Vegas light show...meets my taste... guess it depends on yours.

This unit went in easy enough although Crutchfields instructions were off a bit. First, there was no need to remove the center console around the shifter as they instruct. Popping out the bottom panel gives access to all the bolts that are needed. Secondly, the Civic Ex has a nice CD storage bin with a hinged cover under the radio but the Crutchfield mounting kit replaces it with a uncovered shallow cubby hole. Well I skipped using their replacement and just used the existing EX mount keeping the covered hatch. I routed the USB/Ipod and Aux In cable through the back of this bin so I could keep my Ipod in there.

This meant bolting the Pioneer in directly without using the DIN sleeve. Yes this leaves the Pioneer a little deeper than one might prefer, but then again it worked out perfectly if you don't want your radio being advertised to every thief around. There was some confusion over what wire to connect with the Dimmer function. I called Crutchfield and the techie was very nice, but I'm thinking that he got this one wrong since I'm not seeing the dimmer work after taking his advice.... I'll re-explore later. The ipod controller works well with my nano. It doesn't work with my older 2004 Ipod model even though it has an Ipod dock connector (crutchfield had not listed my ipod model but did say it worked with Ipods with dock connectors... so I gambled and lost... but can still play it through aux in). I cut off the old stock OEM Honda radio faceplate and I use that for a faux faceplate cover when I'm parked, since I really don't want to get ripped off again.

    not the best

Written By John, Chimacum, WA on Thursday, February 14, 2008
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I recently purchased two car radios from Crutchfield. The Pioneer model which fit in my GMC one ton truck (Pioneer DEH-P77DH) was vastly supeior to the Pioneer model which fit in my Elantra (DEHP5000UB). The GMC model has good AM and FM sensitivity and the controls are easy to use. In contrast, the AM sensitivity in the DEHP5000UB is marginal, which means that in this remote region it is barely useable. The new single button control is very difficult to operate and the entire face plate bounces in and out when the control button is pushed. The plastic face plate already is scarred and scratched and looks lousy. I would not recommend the Pioneer DEHP5000UB model but the DEH-P77DH is very good (if it will fit in your vehicle).

Nice receiver, iPod controls a little slow

Written By Josh, Seattle, WA on Tuesday, February 12, 2008
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

So overall I think this is a solid unit for the price. For me, it was a toss up between Pioneer and Alpine. This deck won out because it's sleeker and nicer looking than the comparible Alpine decks and had two lines of display compared to the one line of display on the Alpine of similar price.

For the reviewer that said you can't control the iPod through the iPod itself, I thought the same thing. I was peeved when I bought this deck and thought I couldn't do that. I, however, have found a way to do it. If the button on the lower left of the joystick knob is pressed (I think its the RND button) and held while the iPod is plugged in, it will eventually bring up a menu to swich it. I think this is the mode that other USB devices would use when plugged in. My only caveat is I am hooking up my iPhone, not an older iPod, so I can't test everything.

My biggest complaint of the deck is when controlling the iPod through the deck, there is a definite lag time when scrolling through anything quickly. If I turn the know too fast, the titles will disappear briefly before coming back up. For me, it's not THAT big of a deal, as there are only two lines of display, but it would be nice if it was a little bit more responsive.

I do, however, like how it maintains the iPod's full directory structure. Some units I played with wouldn't. For example, if searching for an Artist, I'd then pick Radiohead, and they would list ALL songs by that artist rather than showing the individual album names. The Pioneer shows the albums names as well as an ALL option.

Overall, a little room for improvement, but for the price, for 3 4V pre-amp outputs, in my opinion the best looking deck I've found, it's well worth the money.

    Great Head Unit

Written By Jacob, TX on Monday, February 11, 2008
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Very rarely do all the features, menus, list functions, sub and EQ functions meet or exceed all of my expectations - but this unit, for the money, can't be beat. Everything - all the menus, buttons etc are in the right place. When you're listening to any specific Ipod artist, the list button will bring up songs that are either in that specific playlist, or in that particular album (which is how it should be)- not back to the main menu list so you have to scroll through 4 more menus to just see the next song from that artist....The audio and other source buttons are equally as intuitive. I have this unit paired up to some pioneer 6x8's and 2 10" subs w/an external 800w amp, the unit powering the 6x8's - and it sounds amazing - clear, balanced, great SQ, and I love how the basic EQ functions are simple, easy to use and not overly complicated and in depth like I've seen before in other units. I just don't need a million EQ, crossover, and decibel slope adjustments for car audio...just let me set the EQ (this deck's "powerful" setting suits my needs well) and let me send 80+ hz to my door speakers and everything below to the woofers - and I'm set! This unit gets down to business. Its an attractive streamlined unit that I would recommend to anyone.

Crutchfield is a joy to deal with, they tell you what fits your car or truck, they supply the dash kits/adapters, misc install stuff you'll need, illustrated directions, and if something doesn't make sense, call or get online and live chat w/them for help. Great product and great service.

    Good Reciver

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I looked for months to replace my stock Toyota 6 CD deck in my 2007 Matrix and finally settled on this one. I bought it for the price and the ability to expand in the future. Here are the PROS...

Great sound - I already had the factory 6 speaker system but now it sounds three times better. You have to take some time to adjust the custom settings on the EQ but well worth the time.

I-pod connect - works as advertised. There is no need to purchase the CD-IU50 unless you just want an extra i-pod cable. We are a two i-pod family I and had no use for the extra one. I ran the USB extention cable to the small trap door under the shifter, plugged in the i-pod cable that came with my i-pod and it worked like a charm. You can navigate thru the menus fairly quickly once you get used to the navigation.

Remote - I kind of laughed at it at first but now I never put it down.

Crutchfield - I'll never buy anything locally again. I needed to return the CD-IU 50 and it took a 45 second phone call. It would of cost me $75 locally to do what Crutchfield did for free. As long as you can read, you should be able to install this yourself in about two hours.

I am going to purchase the XM reciever as soon as I get done typing...

Probably one of the best deals out there for an IPOD control stereo. I installed it flawlessly in my BMW 525i with the included wiring harness. Makes the factory premium speakers sound much better than the previous aftermarket stereo. The IPOD controls work very similar to the actual IPOD and make it easy while driving to listen to music. The included USB connection makes it nice to tuck your IPOD away from view of would be thieves. A great deck for any car and I will probably upgrade the deck in my truck to the same setup now!!

    Pretty Darn Good

Written By John, Houston, TEXAS on Tuesday, January 29, 2008
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I really like this unit because it allowed me to hook up my ipod and Sirius sportster4 through the back of the unit that way all the wires are not exposed. Installation was pretty easy for me. Everything and just a tad bit of custom work for the sat. radio it took me about 3 hours. The unit is fairly easy to use, however you should have just a bit of knowledge on the use of car stereo's and functions. The 2 drawbacks about this unit are 1 if you store a lot of music on your ipod it takes a long time to tune it to the song you want as it goes one by one in the menu, alphabetical order. 2 the sound gets louder and softer when you go from one source to another. EX. when I have it on Sirius I have to turn the volume way up but if I go to the ipod then it is blasting. Overall this unit fit my needs and I am happy with it's performance so far. 2002 Dodge Ram 1500

This is my first time installing a car stereo, and Crutchfield made it very easy for me. The reciever is great though. I am still getting used to it, but so far it is working out great in my 2002 Dakota Club Cab. The ipod setup takes some getting used to, but I am starting to pick it up. This HU puts out great sound from my stock 6.5"s. Overall I really could not ask for anything more. Provides all the functions I need for only 190 bucks. Great buy. Highly recommended.

    Pioneer DEH-P5000UB

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I mainly bought this receiver so I could listen to my iPod in my car AND have it charged. I was previously running the RCA audio cables to the back of my old receiver.

    Pros:

Overall the receiver is very aesthetically pleasing, functions well, great features, and the iPod scrolling and menus are easy to operate and displays artists, albums etc in a very decent time (1-2 seconds) and I have a maxed out 60gb video. Allows to have a very custom sound setup via control menu and super tuner is pretty cool.

    Cons:

The downsides... I bought with the usb cable for the iPod because I would be able to control my iPod through the iPod instead of the receiver. Realistically, who is going to have time to scroll through 50+ artists while driving? But this is not the case, after going through tech support, and calling Pioneer directly, the only iPod that allows this is the 2G nano, which I find ridiculous considering this is a newer unit and 2G is how old? hmmm... lets get it together Pioneer. So after spending the extra $$ for an iPod ready receiver, I am buying the other cable that attaches to the aux port in the back, that for sure allows direct iPod control and charges it. The only problem with that cable is that it does not send info from iPod to receiver.. Woohoo, not like your going to be staring at your receiver to figure out whats playing when you already know.

Also, the multi-control knob feels a bit flimsy and I sometimes feel like I am going to break it. It allows a 360 degree turn, push in, left right etc, But I can't help but feel that its going to snap if I don't watch myself.

Annoying beep when you turn off the car... Can be switched off though I believe.

Overall, I was going to send it back and get a cheaper receiver, but I really like how it looks, and for the price, its a great deal, especially if your ok with controlling your iPod through the receiver.

Someone get in contact with Pioneer to let them know 2G Ipods only exist in trash cans.

For the money this is a great receiver. I had an older Pioneer (that I gave to my girlfriend) and it switched right out since they didn't change the power harness plug. So all I had to do was set up her car. The unit itself has went well beyond my expectations. I have Sirrius and it shows the name much better than my older unit. It has the USB feature which ROCKS! It also comes with a 3 or 4 ft USB cable adapter which I was VERY suprised to see out of the box. The only drawback to MP3 player useage is that when you have it on random you cannot forward to another random track it just goes to the next one in the alphabet, but even that is ok.

Very easy to use. Multi wheel is much easier to manuever then I thought. Sound is awesome. Very clean look. Tons of set-up options.
