Overview

Our take on the Pioneer DEH-X4600BT

Add Bluetooth® to your ride

Pioneer's DEH-X4600BT CD receiver stretches the capabilities of your car's audio system with built-in Bluetooth. You can answer a phone call with the push of a button, then talk as if your caller is sitting next to you, freeing up your hands and letting you concentrate on the drive. The DEH-X4600BT supports Bluetooth audio streaming too, so you can stream music wirelessly from compatible devices to the receiver, plus control basic functions like "track up" or "track down."

Your music in your car

The front-panel USB input lets you hook up your iPod® or iPhone®, then access your playlists from the receiver's controls. You'll also enjoy control over your favorite Pandora® stations from the receiver when your iPhone is connected. You can use the USB input to tap into the music stored on many Android devices, while the front aux input handles just about any other audio source. If you're into your CD collection, you'll enjoy excellent playback of your store-bought and home-burned discs.

Find your perfect soundscape

Pioneer's MOSFET amplifier delivers plenty of power to your speakers, while the 5-band EQ lets you tweak the sound to match your taste. Two pairs of preamp outputs let you add external amplifiers or a powered sub.

Want to keep your steering wheel controls?

In most cars, you'll need an adapter to retain those controls with this car stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and radio, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. You'll see the adapters that work with your vehicle when you add this receiver to your cart.

Note: Bluetooth compatibility with this device may vary, depending on your phone and service provider.

iPod/smartphone note: If you're going to use your iPod or smartphone with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for compatibility information.

But a terrible owners manual!! The instructions for operation should be on page one not thirteen and fourteen in micro font print. The initial setup follows?? on page 16. They should have a letter size page for operation and adjustment added to all pioneer radio product. This is a HD radio display. not mentioned.

The price has just come down, for the cost you'd be stupid not to buy this. Easy install in my 2001 Jeep GC LTD, Crutchfield adapters and support second to none. If you want to use the steering wheel buttons you'll need an adapter (which costs as much as the radio) but it works

Pros: Bluetooth and iPhone iPad ipod a match made in heaven

Cons: Pioneer menus not intuitive and hard to navigate, wish I'd paid an extra $10 for the 4700 to get the variable-color illumination. Slightly annoying for instrument panel light color not to match the radio

This Radio was recommended by the Crutchfield team to meet all the my Needs. The radio sound itself is great and the display makes operation easy. I would recommend this radio to anyone looking for an economic price, with a great sound, and easy to use.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This head unit is a huge upgrade over my factory radio. The bluetooth works great. I was concerned because the advertised RMS watts were lower than the competition. But it sounds great, and is no less powerful than any other brand name head unit in this price range. My only real complaint is that the display is too bright at night. Overall, I am very happy with my purchase.

Pros: inexpensive, bluetooth, good sound quality

Cons: overly bright display, even with dimmer turner down

Very good product at an attractive price. Installed in a 2004 F150. Fairly easy install. My wiring questions were answered by Crutchfield tech support. Did have to remove installed radio when I realized microphone plugs in back. Dial and controls are not intuitive but it is a quick learning curve. Phone sync was a tad frustrating until i click yes on both the phone and the unit. Overall it is all that i expected and maybe a bit more.

    2001 Chrysler PT Cruiser
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

We bought the Pioneer DEH-X4600BT to replace the deceased factory stereo in our Chrysler PT Cruiser. The installation went without a hitch. The improvement in sound quality (even using the OEM speakers) was impressive. The bass is tight and the high end is clean even at high volume. You'll want to spend some time in the garage with the manual; the receiver is feature-rich, and you'll want to spend some time going through configuration options.

Pros: Excellent audio quality. Works well with iPhone 5s. FM receiver quality is excellent even in the crowded D/FW metro.

Cons: The manual could do a better job of explaining receiver features and options.

This radio was very easy to set up. For the Bluetooth pairing at least on my iPhone, all I needed to do was plug in the USB cord and it did the rest. This radio meet and exceeded my wants for an aftermarket radio. If you are thinking about getting a radio with Bluetooth, just stop and get this one. The phone calls are clear and the music streaming is outstanding.

Pros: Bluetooth for phone calls and music streaming Not to bright at night Very easy set up Best bang for your buck

    Great stereo to start out

JenksinsJ from Culpeper, VA on 12/1/2014

Bought this for my daughter's first car and it works great and does all she wants. Hook up for her iPhone, excellent reception for the radio, removeable faceplate for security while she's in school, and looks great. Installation was a breeze as well. Paired with the Pioneer speakers we got her, it sounds incredible for a somewhat entry level stereo. Haven't tried the microphone for the hands free blue tooth, but hands free for a teenager is great no matter how it sounds.

Pros: Looks great. Sounds great. Excellent reception. Easy installation.

Cons: Would be even better if it had a rear USB input.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this product to go into an old 'classic car' a 1980 Chrysler New Yorker that we found that had been in storage for years. My wife fell in love with the way it drove, and desided that she would make it her part-time daily driver. It had a state of the art 1980 radio that didn't work. I chose this radio because it seemed to have the best bang for buck. She wanted a radio with CD and ipod included in it. She also wanted hands free bluetooth phone in the car. This unit filled the bill on all fronts. It has more features than she will ever use. The install wasnot to bad, I did have to call Crutchfield tech support a couple of times for direction since I couldn't find any help online with a couple of wiring questions. I must say that Crutchfield tech support was very helpful and had the answers to all my questions.

Pros: Has all the components in one small and neat package. I'll be back for another for my truck.

Cons: Some of the installation instrution in the Pioneer manual could have been better.

    2000 Chevrolet Tahoe
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this receiver for my 2000 Chevy Tahoe (new body, without Bose, with factory subwoofer) as I wanted to replace the factory receiver. Most importantly, I wanted something that wouldn't break the back, was highly rated, had bluetooth, and was easy to install considering I've never changed a receiver before. Install was very easy - had one issue with no sound coming through, but one call to customer service and I was able to fix it quickly and easily. With the kit provided by Crutchfield, the receiver looks great considering it's narrower than the factory receiver. Bluetooth was easy to set up and pairing to my phone was very simple. Sound is 100X better than factory and it also helps that I installed new speakers and sub. I forgot to mention that the mic is a nice added touch and was very easy to install. Instead of attaching it to the visor, I attached it on top of the steering wheel column and has worked out just fine - tested it and my voice goes through clear to the receiver. This receiver delivers more than I expected....very happy with the purchase and highly recommended. BTW, I highly recommend using the wire caps when splicing the wires of the harness together. They're available from Crutchfield.

Pros: Easy install, bluetooth, mic, great sound, detachable face

Cons: None thus far after about a month of use

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was shopping for the same stereo model in the local shops and the estimate was around $350 for fixing it along with steering wheel integration. But all I spent in Crutchfield was just a bit over $200 in total and 2 hours of my time fixing the stereo. I was a little skeptical about whether I can fix it by myself. But I took the risk and ordered it. Worst comes, I would take this to a local sound shop and get it fixed from them. Still saving a lot of money. But boy I was surprised with the customer support. I was totally clueless when I opened the box and was blinking what to do. I called the customer support center and those guys walked me through each step very patiently when I was asking the same questions again and again. Kudos to tech support. 2 weeks now, I am happy with the stereo. But I can give only 4 star, because when I was talking to some representative before buying the product, I asked if the BT mic was built into the stereo and they guy said yes. Later found out that I had to fix it outside the system and it is hanging on my dashboard rather ugly.

Pros: Slick product and fittings. Easy to do it yourself. Great technical support.

    Cons: None so far.

I had the Pioneer installed in my 2010 Civic and so far I love it. It has everything I need: radio, mp3, USB, AUX (not used yet) and hands-free phone. Sound quality is great, MC button menu is quite easy to use and the remote comes in handy for passengers. Overall an excellent product. Illumination feature would have been nice though for the price of this stereo as the display is very bright.

This is the second DEH-X4600-BT I have installed in our cars. The unit sounds fantastic with factory speakers. It has all the functions I wanted for an inexpensive replacement for the stock stereo. The Bluetooth works great. Always recognizes my iPhone5. I don't have to take my phone out of my pocket to listen to music. Very happy and would recommend this to anyone looking for an inexpensive stereo.

Pros: Plenty of basic functions. Bluetooth works well. Sounds great with my factory speakers.

Cons: Volume is not as responsive as I would like.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have had this unit install for about 1 week and so far I am very impressed. I wanted a inexpensive (< $200) aftermarket radio that could replace my stock radio in a 2008 Lancer ES. I chose this unit because I was looking for a unit that had BT capabilities for calling and at least an AUX input for music streaming. To my surprise, I was able to find a unit within my price range that has BT capabilities for most music apps that I use (Pandora, Amazon Prime, Google Music Player). I have a Nexus 5 and I couldn't be happier with the 4600BT built in features for BT music streaming. I place my phone in the car charger and never have to touch my phone again. Phone Calling: Missed, Incoming and Recent calls are all available through scrolling on the unit. Press and hold the phone button and you can use Google's voice command to make a phone call through the pioneer microphone that comes with this unit. (mine is placed on the driver side sun visor and everyone says they can hear me fairly well.) Music Apps: I have used Amazon Prime, which is a little slow to initalize but once that happens no issues with moving tracking forwards or backwards, pause and play through the 4600BT, Same with the standard music player on the phone and Pandora. You can also thumbs up or down using the folder buttons on the unit. Sound: Plenty of power over my stock unit, 2 custom EQs, Bass Boost, and two different general volume adjustments for compensating for road noise or different sources

Pros: Bluetooth capability for music applications and calling Comes with a microphone and plenty of cable to put it anywhere Able to be integrated with steering wheel controls Price Sound quality vs stock radio decent interface for most features, some I still need to reference the manual to understand I also use Torque App to get data from my BT OBD2 module and I can connect to that and my radio at the same time via BT

Cons: Only con so far is that the display is a bit dim even with the dimmer option 'OFF'. It is somewhat difficult to see on the drive home ~5pm on a sunny day.

This is an excellent unit for the price. Went in easy with Crutchfield's supplied harness. Sound quality is good. Love the Bluetooth and USB access which is why I put this unit in. The factory unit in my car was very good but in an 05 vehicle was lacking the ability to even play an MP3 file. This unit gives me comparable quality to the factory unit ( separate amp in the car ca not be overridden easily), so it still uses the same amp. I now have an up to date unit as far as features goes, for a little over a hundred bucks. I am very satisfied with this purchase.

    Pros: cost features value

Cons: Blue tooth mic.could be better.

I have just had the radio installed in my car for about 1 week. I am very pleased with its operation so far. I have only tried the Bluetooth phone process a few times, and the process was quite easy. The reception was quite good and I was told the same on the other end of the call. I am not very savvy re: computer stuff, so I am still learning how to set up and use the various capabilities in the radio.

Pros: The ease of ordering the radio, the speed and packaging of the product and the apparent quality of the radio itself. I'm still learning the various functions of the radio and how to use them.

    Cons: None so far.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I had high expectations from this radio after all the positive feedback I have read, The main reason for my purchase was the blue tooth feature. I loved the idea of hands free calling with the push of a button, but the sound quality is diminished from that of listening to the radio, and sometimes cutting out. The same low quality sound is heard when listening to xbox music through my phone and blue tooth. The radio and cd player is great, but the player does take a little getting used to navigating through the features. I would probably go back to alpine or jvc players again if I did it over.

Pros: looks good out of the box - cool features - radio and cd player works great

Cons: blue tooth sound not as good as radio sound- digital display is impossible to read on sunny day, even at its brightest level.

This is a great stereo! The stereo arrived within two days and I could successfully install the product. I am very happy with the stereo!

Pros: -You don't need to purchase the tools to get the old stereo out because they are included in the box. They are located in the small plastic bag with the screws. - The bluetooth audio works great with my iphone. I am able to listen to music on my phone and read what is playing. I can change the song using the arrow keys on the stereo or the handy remote. -There is a phone button that you can push to be able to select people in your contacts you wish to call.

Cons: - It may be my old speakers in my car, but I am unable to have a great connection to hear what people are saying when I am using the bluetooth on a phone call. Like I said this may be my old car speakers.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Overall, this is an excellent buy. The fact that it comes will all of the installation gear free (although more of a comment on how great Crutchfield is) makes this well worth the money. The sound quality is noticeably improved on my stock speakers, especially when playing directly from a cd or ipod/iphone. The controls are fairly intuitive, and it takes no time at all to set up once you have it installed. The sound quality of the included microphone is quite good, if you have it installed in the right place. Bluetooth connectivity is easy to use and has not given me any trouble yet. The removable face-plate is convenient and fairly stylish. I am extremely pleased with this product.

Pros: Despite what some people say, the brightness is not an issue, it's just fine for me. Intuitive Controls All of the features work as advertised, and are easy to use. Decent quality microphone Great value for your money

Cons: Display suffers from some serious glare in the sun - only affects digital readout, all buttons still easily recognizable.

I unplugged the old unit and wired in the new one. The sound is great, but it's too much for factory speakers. The EQ settings are bit different in that adjustments are made by frequency rather than treble, mid, and bass. The Bluetooth feature works very well. Overall I'm very pleased with the unit. Installation went very well - the Crutchfield instructions and wiring harness were great as always. The included face plate / surround looks even better than I thought it would. Lots of ability to customize sound to your liking with EQ settings, loudness & bass boost. Paring with an iphone was a snap and hands-free calling works and sounds great. Definitely recommend this unit. PS - pay special attention to Crutchfield's instructions regarding the dome light wiring and the splice you need to make - a terrific help!

It is a little complicated to get used to because the giant volume knob does not turn volume off just up or down. I am used to pushing knob to turn off radio or cd player. This Pioneer head unit brought the car speakers back to life!! The power this stereo puts out is phenomenal. The looks and color adjustments of the head unit are great, overall, no complaints on this head unit. The remote and blue tooth capabilities are so easy to use. The biggest and best part of this stereo is the ability to use the blue tooth and the mic to answer and make calls while driving. Pioneer also made it to where, when your in the car, all calls come in thru the stereo regardless of being in blue tooth mode or not. Great feature. Of course you could disable this, that feature is also available. Two thumbs up!

Great price. Great sound paired with new speakers created a new experience for driving. Replaced factory system in 92 Mercury Marquis and I couldn't be happier. Install went well, only issues experienced were with the factory system, but this head unit fit perfectly. The menu system might take you a couple tries to get through it, but you'll get the hang of it quick.

Pros: Sound. Illumination. Ease of install. Affordable quality sound to replace your system. This head unit is pretty awesome for what we need without too many bells and whistles to manage.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It's has a good amount of features for the price. It sounds quite a bit better than the factory radio, even on the factory speakers. I do have one complaint that makes this radio kind of annoying, when switching between inputs it sometimes loses where it was on my iPod playlist and defaults to playing 'all songs' when I go back to my iPod. I've never had that problem with any other radio in any other car. If it weren't for that significant glitch, I'd probably give it 4 or 5 stars as it really is a highly feature packed radio for the money.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I wanted to upgrade my existing Pioneer that played MP3 from a CD to a radio with a USB. That way I wouldn't have to store all those CDs, just a couple of flash drives. Thought I wouldn't need the install kit but it turned out it was a good thing I got it. The place that installed the first radio didn't install it right and I had to change the mounting kit for the free one that came with my new Pioneer. It's easy to navigate the features of the DEH-X4600BT. The old radio I had to get the manual out ever time I wanted to change the time or adjust other features, now it's just one button and turn the control knob and push to select what you want. I shopped around and found that Crutchfield was very comparative on price, I could find it at a lesser price put trying to find the installation components and adding the price to the radio turned out to be a challenge and mostly would cost you more in the long run.

Pros: USB, Simple controls, Easy installation

Cons: The face trim is thin and doesn't want to stay on

    2006 Hyundai Azera
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought the receiver on Friday and was scheduled for delivery yesterday, but I got it Monday. Bonus points for Crutchfield. I have to say the DEH-X4600BT is very sleek and quite the upgrade to the factory unit on my 2006 Hyundai Azera Limited. The factory Infinity system was outdated and I wanted to have access to my iPhone and Pandora without all the wires. Bluetooth syncing was a breeze. I also purchased the iDatalink Maestro to maintain my steering wheel controls and I like that with one touch I can bring up Siri on my phone. The microphone is small enough to be hidden from view and they provide you with enough lead to put it just about anywhere you want it in the cabin. The mic picks up everything, so rest assured you will be heard. The DJing of MixTrax is a neat little feature that I'm enjoying as it mixes my songs together almost seemlessly. I had a couple of small wiring issues, but two calls to Tech Support (one for each issue) cleared it right up and I had my car audio up and running in no time. This receiver is like a Swiss Army Knife. It's got functionality for just about anything. Hands free calling for your phone for safety, you can control Pandora from the unit, there's a variety if EQ and sound controls for every listener and every music style, and the display will show everything from track titles to just the clock. I completely recommend this receiver. Great huge bang for the buck.

Pros: * Sound quality - makes my factory speakers sound like more expensive name brand speakers * Value - all of that for very few pennies * Nice design * Options, Options, Options - there are so many ways to personalize how you use this machine * Bluetooth capability should be the standard these days, but to have it at such a great price? Amazing!

Cons: It's only been one day so there isn't much to complain about, but if I were to be nit-picky I think the Pioneer wiring harness (not the one that Crutchfield provides but the one that comes with the receiver) needs to have more substantial wires. While they do the job efficiently, pairing them with the wires on the Crutchfield wiring harness seems like it won't hold, but it does. Minor gripe, but hey...it's a great unit. Not much to complain about!

I bought this one on accident thinking it was the next model above it but I'm completely satisfied with this unit. The BT was easy to set up and use and the supplied mic has more than enough wire to go through the dash, up the pillar, across the headliner and to the overhead console in a full size truck. It sounds better than the stock GMC stereo and the supplied installation hardware was quick and easy to use.

Pioneer has made a great product. In years gone by, I have spent thousands on various systems using some of the best components available at the time. The price and feature set on this stereo blow them away. Works really well with my iPhone 5. Very east to install. Cannot say enough good things about the Crutchfield team in helping me through the process.

Pros: USB player works well with iPhone 5 running latest iOS. Added plus of charging the phone. Bluetooth audio is great. Bluetooth phone connection is good with excellent call clarity and quality. Easy to install. Crutchfield's support staff is phenomenal.

Cons: The instructions for connecting the iPhone via Bluetooth were a little off. So many buttons and options it can be overwhelming. I keep the manual in the car just in case. Bright blue display is a little too bright during night driving even with the dimmer enabled.

After I installed everything and got the bluetooth connection working, I knew I had made the right decision. I have an iPhone 4s, and it synced up with the new receiver right away. Im streaming audio from Pandora and my iTunes library seamlessly. I've made a few phone calls already. and everyone on the receiving end can hear me clearly I can hear them clearly as well. Built-in Bluetooth

Bluetooth Technology: The DEH-X4600BT is equipped with built-in Bluetooth ver. 3.0, allowing you to make and receive phone calls wirelessly through the receiver; as well as stream music wirelessly from your smartphone to the head unit.  In order to use Bluetooth wireless technology, your phone must also be Bluetooth compatible and be able to interpret certain profiles. This unit is compatible with the following Bluetooth Profiles:

    • Hands-Free Communication: HFP (Hands Free Profile), HSP (Head Set Profile), OPP (Object Push Profile), PBAB (Phone Book Access Profile).
    • Audio Streaming: A2DP (Advanced Audio Distribution Profile), AVRCP (Audio/Video Remote Control Profile).
Note: Due to the differences in Bluetooth technology, some Bluetooth enabled devices may be incompatible, function improperly, or may not support all features when used with the Pioneer DEH-X4600BT.

SPP + USB Pairing w/ Guest Mode: With Secure Simple Pairing (SSP), you can easily pair a Bluetooth enabled phone to the DEH-X4600BT without having to enter pin codes or go through complicated settings (your phone must also support SSP). When your paired Bluetooth device is in close proximity to the receiver, the auto connection function automatically pairs the two units. Up to 3 Bluetooth-compatible devices can be paired to this head unit, but nly one device can be used at a time. You can also pair your Apple iPhone by simply connecting it to the Pioneer head unit via USB and following a single prompt on the head unit's display. In addition, the DEH-X4600BT features "Guest Mode", which allows you to add and replace a mobile device instantly to the receiver. Guest Mode is a great feature for a family vehicle with multiple drivers or a driver with multiple devices because it allows users to pair and delete devices easily without a lengthy registration or deletion process.

Hands-Free Communication (w/ External Mic): The DEH-X4600BT supports wireless hands-free communication (HFP/HSP/OPP/PBAB) for your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone. The head unit will display the caller's information and an audible ring tone will be heard through your vehicle's speaker during an incoming call. You can manually answer an incoming call or have the unit automatically answer the call. The DEH-X4600BT allows you to carry on a phone conversation from your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone using the head unit's external microphone and your car audio speakers. During a conversation you can adjust the volume, as well as switch between the Private Mode (talking directly on your cell phone) and the Hands Free Mode. Using the DEH-X4600BT, you can dial a phone number in one of the following ways:

    • Speed (Preset) Dialing: You can easily store up to six phone numbers as presets for speed dialing.
    • Phone Book: The phone book in your Bluetooth enabled cellular phone will be transferred automatically when the phone is paired to this unit. After finding the number you want to call in the phone book from the head unit, you can select the entry and make the call. If a lot of numbers are registered in the phone book, you can search for a phone number by the contact person's name alphabetically (A-Z).
    • Call Log: The most recent calls dialed, received, and missed are stored in memory. You can browse them and call numbers from these lists.
Note: The external microphone provides better performance in noisy environments than the integrated microphone found on the front-panel of many aftermarket or factory radios. The microphone features a 13' cord that plugs into the back of the radio, and comes with an adjustable visor-mount clip. The microphone measures 0.475" (diameter) x 1.445" (depth). The unit is not equipped with an integrated microphone.

Wireless Audio Streaming (with Song/Artist Info): The Pioneer DEH-X4600BT also supports wireless audio playback (AD2P) and control (AVRCP) of a Bluetooth enabled audio player or smartphone. The head unit can stream music stored on your Bluetooth enabled device or music apps you have downloaded on your device. The DEH-X4600BT will be able to control basic playback features; Play, Pause, & Skip Tracks (app must also support). The head unit will also display your  music's song information; such as Artist name and Song/Album title (app must also support). When an incoming call or outgoing call is in progress from your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone, audio streaming will be paused so you can take your call.

    Disc & USB Playback

Music files are listed first by Artist name, then by Album name, and finally by Song title. The Name List will also display the list of track titles on a CD Text disc.

Song/Artist Information: During MP3/WMA playback, the unit displays any recorded ID3 Tag (ver. 1.x/2.x) and WMA Tag information; including artist, song, and album name.
