Elevate your home theater experience with Pioneer Elite and Dolby Atmos
Here's a terrific combination — Pioneer's Elite home theater bookshelf speakers and Dolby Atmos surround sound. Designed by world-renowned speaker engineer Andrew Jones, the Elite SP-EBS73-LR speakers are ready to deliver a new and more thrilling home theater experience with Dolby Atmos soundtracks. Not familiar with Dolby Atmos? This new home theater technology creates a "height" layer above the listener for more immersive and realistic surround sound.
When Andrew Jones demoed these bookshelf speakers for us in a recent training at our Charlottesville headquarters, they projected a huge rear soundstage and placed effects overhead with pinpoint accuracy.
The SP-EBS73-LR's outstanding clarity and performance make them an excellent choice for front and rear speakers in your Dolby Atmos home theater. Or use them in back with Pioneer Elite SP-EFS73 floor-standing speakers in front. Either way, you can count on these Atmos-enabled speakers to make your movies and music come alive. Complete your Elite home theater system with the matching SP-EC73 center channel and SW-E10 powered subwoofer.
Bounce sound off the ceiling for enhanced surround effects
How do they work? Along with their forward-firing drivers, each speaker features a built-in two-way driver on top of the cabinet. These drivers are angled facing up and feature controlled dispersion, so they can reflect sound off of your ceiling and back down to your listening position. And by using identical drivers for both the top and front positions, the SP-EBS73-LRs achieve an exceptionally seamless, multi-dimensional space that puts you inside the action.
Arriving on time for better sound
The Elite CST driver places its tweeter at the center of its midrange cone for maximum clarity.
Conventional speaker designs typically place the tweeter and midrange in different locations on their front baffles. This physical separation means the sound from each driver reaches our ears at slightly different times, creating an effect that can smear subtle details and reduce intelligibility. Pioneer's Elite bookshelf speakers take a different approach.
The key to the SP-EBS73-LR's clear, detailed sound is its CST (Coherent Source Transducer) Concentric Driver. This sophisticated design starts by placing a 1" soft dome tweeter directly in the center of a 4" aluminum cone midrange. Aligning the tweeter and midrange in the same axial and vertical plane ensures that all of the frequencies arrive at your ears at precisely the same instant. This eliminates timing distortion to provide more coherent sound.
To further enhance clarity, the CST driver combines a horn-shaped ring around the tweeter plus a specially curved midrange cone. Together, they create a smooth, continuous surface that acts as a waveguide, precisely controlling sound directivity into the room. This dramatically reduces interference between the midrange and tweeter for seamlessly integrated mids and highs.
Tight, dynamic bass
The SP-EBS73LRs use a long-throw 5-1/4" aluminum cone woofer to supply tight, articulate bass that blends in precisely with the CST driver. The woofer's integral aluminum dust cap adds to the driver's stiffness, reducing cone breakup for greater accuracy. A rear-firing port extends bass performance, but keeps it tight and tuneful.

Features
Dolby Atmos-Enabled: Designed by world-renowned speaker engineer Andrew Jones, the Pioneer Elite SP-EBS73 bookshelf speaker employs state-of-the-art Dolby Atmos technology bringing new life to movie and music soundtracks. The Elite bookshelf speaker from Pioneer is equipped with a vertically-firing Dolby Atmos-enabled driver. To maximize the performance capabilities of Dolby Atmos, the Elite bookshelf speaker utilizes a Dolby-enabled top-firing concentric driver that uses Pioneer's Coherent Source Transducers (CST) technology to achieve the highest performance for the most accurate, uniform sound. In concert with Dolby Atmos, the CST driver fires sound upwards and reflects the sound off the ceiling for an heightened overhead surround sound experience. System requirements needed for Dolby Atmos are as follows:
- Equipment Requirements: In addition to a Dolby Atmos compatible speaker setup, you must have a Dolby Atmos compatible receiver, and Blu-ray Disc Content encoded for Dolby Atmos (all sold separately).
- Room Requirements: The listening room ceiling should have a horizontal flat hard surface (for audio reflection) and a height of 8' to 14'.
3-Way Speaker Design: While most bookshelf speakers compromise performance with a two-way design that requires the bass driver to reproduce a range of frequencies beyond its capabilities, Andrew Jones has designed the Elite Bookshelf speaker to be a true, three-way design, so each major frequency band is represented with a separate high-, midrange and low-frequency driver. The Pioneer Elite SP-EBS73 bookshelf loudspeaker incorporates a two-way CST driver for the highs and mids, plus a 5.25" bass woofer for the low frequencies. That's in addition to the Dolby-enabled top-firing concentric driver used for Dolby Atmos.
Coherent Source Transducer (CST) Technology: The Pioneer Elite bookshelf speaker utilizes Coherent Source Transducer (CST) technology for its tweeter & midrange drivers, plus its Dolby-enabled top-firing driver assembly. This unique driver design dramatically reduces interference between the midrange and tweeter, precisely controlling sound directivity at all frequencies and ensuring that direct and reflected sound arrive at the listening position with identical timing and timbre. It does all this with a 1" tweeter positioned centrally at the apex of the 4" midrange driver. Unlike a coaxial driver, which positions its high-frequency driver further forward of a larger cone, the CST concentric design eliminates audible time domain errors that cannot be avoided when drivers are not aligned on the same axial or vertical plane. The CST drivers are mounted in there own individual enclosure, isolating them from the pressure waves in the main enclosure.
- 1" Tweeter: The 1" soft-dome tweeter delivers smooth, extended response and is positioned in the center of the aluminum midrange driver. A matching horn around the tweeter seamlessly integrates both drivers and creates a continuous surface for the expansion of sound waves.
- 4" Midrange: The 4" aluminum midrange cone exhibits true pistonic action and eliminates break-up within its range of operation. Its cone profile has been optimized for both midrange performance and waveguide directivity. The midrange cone terminates in a double-roll surround designed to minimize wave front disruption while also allowing maximum excursion of the midrange cone.
- Neodymium Magnets: Driving both transducers (tweeter & midrange) are dual Neodymium magnets that provide powerful and stable flux fields in their gaps.
5.25" Bass Woofer: The 5.25" aluminum cone and dust cap of the bass driver ensures true pistonic action, eliminating break-up modes within their operating range. A large diameter vented pole piece allows unrestricted airflow under the dust cap, reducing unwanted noise caused by turbulent air. An oversized magnet ensures greater bass control, while a 1.5" long throw voice coil improves power handling for full, dynamic bass.
Bass Port: The Pioneer Elite SP-EBS73 bookshelf loudspeaker features a Bass Reflex cabinet design with a rear firing port for greater efficiency and bigger bass response from a compact speaker. Two port plugs are included to insert into the speaker's ports if bass is too boomy.
Curved Cabinet Design: The cabinet of the bookshelf speaker is designed with gently curved sides to eliminate standing waves encountered in typical square-box designs. The black-finished cabinet integrates perfectly with contemporary and traditional interiors, while a small footprint allows flexible placement in the room.
Gold-Plated Binding Posts: The Pioneer Elite SP-EBS73 bookshelf speaker is fitted with two sets of gold-plated binding posts. One set is used for the "front-of-cabinet" drivers, while the second set is used solely for speaker's Dolby-enabled top-firing driver. Make sure to make the appropriate connections between the speaker and your AV receiver. The binding posts will accept bare wire (up to 10AWG), pin connectors, spade connectors and banana plugs (single or dual). The speaker's dual sets of binding posts are not bi-ampable or bi-wireable.
Placement: Whether the speakers are used in the front or rear surround channels, the tweeter (which is in the center of the midrange driver on the front of the speaker) should be positioned near ear level and the loudspeakers separated a distance approximately equal to the listening distance. Angling the loudspeakers inward towards the listener seated in the center will improve the image stability for non-central listeners. Close proximity to a side or rear wall will enhance the bass performance, although too close (particularly a corner location) and the bass may be unnaturally high and image performance may be degraded. Best results will be obtained when the loudspeaker is placed approximately 2 feet from the wall. If a corner location is unavoidable, try to position the loudspeaker so that the distance to the rear wall is not equal to the distance to the side wall.
