About the Pioneer GM-D1004

Buck Pomerantz

Double the power, double the fun

Pioneer's GM-D1004 4-channel amplifier will power your front and rear speakers with 45 watts RMS each — that's almost three times the power of a typical factory radio or aftermarket receiver. Even better, this compact amplifier runs so efficiently that it can often get its power from the same circuit as your receiver, saving you some wiring hassles. And its tiny size means you can install it almost anywhere, even behind the dash in many vehicles.

You can bridge a couple of the GM-D1004's channels together and drive a subwoofer with 90 watts while still powering a pair of front speakers. Universal harnesses let you get signal from an aftermarket receiver's RCA outputs or a factory radio's speaker wiring.

Important note: If your car receiver's power circuit is protected by a 15-amp or larger fuse (check your fuse box or owner's manual), you can tap into it to power your GM-D1004. Otherwise, you'll have to run a power wire to the battery. Be sure to add a 15-amp inline fuse as close to the battery as possible.

Features

CEA 2006 Compliant: The Pioneer GM-D1004 4-channel amplifier power ratings are measured according to the Consumer Electronics Association's CEA-2006 standards. These standards allow you to accurately compare the rated power output of all CEA-2006 compliant amplifiers, even from different brands. Manufacturers who adhere to the standards can display the CEA-2006 logo on their products and packaging. CEA-2006 Specifications:

  • Power Output:
    • 45 watts x 4 at 4-ohms with <1% THD+N
    • 45 watts x 4 at 2-ohms with <1% THD+N
    • 90 watts x 2 at 4-ohms with <1% THD+N (bridged)
  • Signal to Noise Ratio: 74 dBA

Class-FD Amp: A Class-D amplifier offers higher power in a smaller chassis than conventional Class-AB amp designs. Pioneer's Class-FD design not only delivers full-range Class-D amplification, but is more efficient than other designs. The compact design provides many installation options.

Channel Layout: The GM-D1004 is a 4-channel amplifier; both halves are bridgeable, so it can be wired as 4-channel, 3-channel, or 2-channel.

Auto Turn-on: When using a speaker level input, a signal sensing circuit will automatically turn the amp on and off along with the source unit.

Input Select Switch: The amplifier's input select switch allows you to choose between 4-channel and 2-channel mode. The 2-channel mode only requires connections to the front inputs.

Gain: The amplifier gain is fixed:

  • RCA input: 28 dB (1.0 volt max input)
  • Speaker level input: 8 dB (10 volt max input)

Crossovers: The front and rear amplifier sections have independent crossover controls; each has can be set to low pass, high pass, or off (full range). The crossover points are fixed at 80 Hz and the slope it 12 dB/octave.

Power/Output: The power, ground, remote turn-on, and speaker output wires are housed in a single harness.

Signal Input: Use one of the included input harnesses, line-level or speaker-level.

Dimensions: The approximate amplifier dimensions are:

  • Width:
    • 7-1/4" (chassis)
    • 7-3/4" (including wiring)
    • 8-1/8" (including mounting brackets)
  • Height: 1-1/2"
  • Depth: 2-1/2"

Q
Will this pair well with the Alpine SPS-610c? I know tweeters are sensitive and I dont want to put too much power to them. I have a kenwood KDC 168U deck.
gerall  Jul 08, 2018
1 answer
A
The Pioneer GM-D1004 amplifier would be a solid addition to pair with your Alpine speakers and Kenwood head unit! The Alpine SPS-610C are designed to handle plenty of power so I wouldn't be concerned with the amp being too much. For more personalized assistance, please feel free to contact an Advisor directly by phone (888.955.6000) or online chat. Hope that helps! :)

Q
Does a 2ch high input (limited by my vintage HU output) result in 4ch output from amp, if the 2ch switch input is selected?
john  Apr 16, 2018

Q
Is this appropriate for a boat if the amp is hidden? Also, I was told this is digital and does not produce much heat and could strap it to the top of my radio unit, thoughts?
todd  Mar 23, 2018
3 answers
A
Mine is in a car, not a boat. It works great and does not get too hot, but I would not mount it on top of a radio. Give it space, keep it dry and use all watertight marine conditions. You can mount them 10 feet away from the radio. Pick a good dry location
joe  Apr 03, 2018
A
I think it would work for the boat if there was no way of getting it wet, also this unit does produce a lot of heat, I had it mounted near one of my trucks floor vents and the unit shut down, after I moved it, no problems, I hope this helped.
sean edward  Apr 03, 2018
A
I would say yes for a boat as long as it is in a watertight compartment. While the unit gives off heat, I don't recommend strapping two components together as the head unit typically gives off heat and may cause issues for both. The unit is very light. I zip tied it to the dash frame with no issues.

Q
Will this automatically take a 2ohm input and switch to a 4ohm output?
cory  Nov 24, 2017
1 answer
A
No. Definitely not. Like most amplifiers, the Pioneer will operate at the presented impedance (within the acceptable range anyway)

Q
Can this plug into pioneer radio without wiring like the alpine version of this? I only have one rca input and my sub is plugged into that
bryan  Aug 06, 2017
1 answer
A
You can use rca inputs or speaker inputs (the wires that would normally run from your head set to the speakers). It Doesn't matter which you choose. You would want to choose the speaker inputs since your sub is connected to your only rca input. It is suggested that you run a separate power wire for the amp (instead of just using your radio power wire) if you choose to use the speaker inputs.
hunter  Aug 06, 2017
Q
Why does the 2 channel setting run my component speakers at full range but the 4 channel setting runs my front speakers as highs and my rear as mids?
juan  Jun 28, 2017
1 answer
A
It seems to me that this setting is in the audio unit and not that amp. Many give the option to set rear speakers as subs.if you scroll through the settings on screen, I think it's likely you'll be able to change it there.

Q
The Pioneer GM-D1004 has a max input voltage of 1V on the line in, and 10V on the speaker in, according to the specifications. Pioneer head units all seem output 2V on the line out (or 4V in the case of the DEH-X8800BHS), and 14V on the speaker out. Doesn't this mean that you can't turn the volume up all the way on these units or you'll get distortion on the amplifier? Doesn't this also mean that the noise floor will be raised since you can't optimize your gain structure? Doing some math, it seems like you lose 6 dB on most line outs (1V vs 2V), and 12 dB on the DEH-X8800BHS (1V vs 4V), which means your noise floor will be much higher than it could be if you could attenuate the level to match the amp input? I have an 8800, and 12 dB higher noise floor sounds pretty bad. I'm perhaps wishing I got the 7800 so it was only 6 dB higher. Alternatively, you could use the speaker inputs and lose only 3 dB (10V vs 14V), but I'm concerned about the audio quality of using both the internal amp on the head unit and the external amp in series. Is this amp even meant to work with their own head units (especially the 8800 with 4V line outs, which I happened to get), and if so, what's the best way to hook it up to get the best sound quality?

Q
I am looking to purchase this product, but am concerned with power always being at the amp, has anyone had any issues with it draining the battery? I plan on running it using the speaker inputs and not the rca route but without a remote turn on, is the amp constantly on if it is just getting a direct hot feed?
anthony del  Nov 24, 2016

A
The amp needs to be on a remote power or it will drain the power.
sean edward  Nov 26, 2016
A
Hi Tony, I installed this amp in my jeep about a year ago and have never had a problem with it draining the battery even when I haven't driven the vehicle for weeks at a time. I don't believe it is always on but admittedly haven't searched the documentation. Good luck with the system and Merry Christmas!
charles  Nov 26, 2016
A
It is switchable. If you wire it through acc power it does not draw when vehicle is off. It is a nice little amp. I used it to drive the speakers in my jeep tj.
tad  Nov 26, 2016
A
If you power the amp directly from the battery or a constant power source then the answer is yes, the amp will stay on powered all the time. This amp only requires a 12v 15amp circuit which is one nice feature. You can splice in any 15amp circuit that has KEY ON POWER. Use a multimeter or a test light if you have one or have access to one. A easy way to accomplish this is to look in your fuse box and find a 15amp circuit (minimum) and reference that to the fuse location in your owners manual to find this right wire to splice. And as always, if your not 100% confident in your abilities to do it. Take it to a pro. Its alot better than causing and fire or shorting out a component of your vehicle. I hope this helps. Good luck!

Q
What I dont understand is, crutchfield recommends 10 gauge power wire when attaching to the battery, yet the yellow power wire is only 14 gauge, how am i meant to change it?
dan  Sep 21, 2016
3 answers
A
Dan, The instructions for installation are written for several devices, specifically for your vehicle. A large power supply line from the battery, linked to a smaller incoming wire is a better situation than a small wire from the battery supplying a sip of current to a power hungry larger incoming wire. Just as the water line to the house is larger than the indoor pipes, a large supply line helps ensure adequate supply. With a water line, too small of a water supply line will only cause a low flow and not a hot wire fire in your dashboard. I ran the heavy gauge wire from the battery to the center console where I mounted the Pioneer amp. I mounted a wire block under the center console with the 10 gauge on the incoming side. I attached the 14 gauge to the other side of the block. Should I ever need another power supply, I now have a large 10 gauge feed running to a block with an open spot to attach another smaller wire.
joseph  Sep 28, 2016
A
That is their recommendation when you connect ANY medium power amp DIRECTLY to the battery. The GM-D1004 is a low draw amp which can even be connected to the same power source as the stereo (it doesn't have to be powered directly from the battery) If you decide to go all the way to the battery, there are "terminal blocks" which allow you to connect one large gage wire (10 gage) to two or three smaller gage (12,14,16,18 gage). It's a waste of time and money though.
sean  Sep 22, 2016
A
You can't. I ran 14ga wire. It would make no sense to run 10ga then drop to 14ga. It is important to run 10ga wire with a big amp. Hope this helps.

Q
If I'm powering this from the battery directly, where would I put my ground? Can I use the radio harness ground?

A
Try to ground as close as possible to the amp using a very good chassis ground I did mine to a bolt mount in rear area behind seat did clean off paint I did not use radio harness
allan  Sep 15, 2016
A
Hi Dan W. Yes you can. I just grounded mine behind the head unit. This is a really nice amp not over powering.
charles k.  Sep 15, 2016
A
Used the radio harness and sounds/works great
kenneth  Sep 15, 2016
A
From my memory, the harness can splice in to the head unit/factory harness. It also can just be grounded to the car frame. Both work. I suggest grounding to the frame. It's less wires to tuck behind the head unit.
daniel  Sep 15, 2016
A
I use the Power directly from the battery and it's OK to use the vehicle's harness groud for the ground.
abner  Sep 14, 2016
A
I don't recommend using the oem radio harness ground, find a chassis ground point close to the location of the amp and make sure to file away any paint for a good ground connection.

power 12 volt is the yellow wire and ground is black wire I ran mine to cigarette lighter socket just tied in wires to it the amp doesn't draw much juice no need to run to battery and all the leads are long if u use high input u don't need to hook up remote wire I fitted mine in glove box of a 91 dodge Dakota hope this helps.

Q
I am using this for a factory radio and upgraded Kicker speakers front and back. I also bought a powered bazooka sub. Can I use the powered sub along with this amp? How would I hook it up? Can the powered sub be hooked up directly to this amp or if not can I still splice the powered subwoofer to the factory speaker outputs?
kirk  Aug 11, 2016
1 answer
A
A powered subwoofer would have it's own built-in amplification so, no, you wouldn't connect it to an external amplifier. The Bazooka should offer "Speaker Level Inputs" so you can tap the factory amplified speaker wires to provide it with the audio signal. Many Bazooka models come packaged with their speaker level input harness and wire taps for this purpose specifically. I hope that helps! My Bio: http://www.crutchfield.com/Support/Bio.aspx?bio=5

Q
Do you have to splice into the factor harness to power the amp or speakers in a 2013 f150?
kevin  May 29, 2016

A
This will depend largely on the factory capabilities of your F-150 and other parts of your system. Splicing wires is often required to install this Pioneer amp, but for more specific details on your installation please contact an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. They will be able to give you the details on what you will need for an installation in your truck. My Bio: http://www.crutchfield.com/Support/Bio.aspx?bio=159

allan  Apr 08, 2016
A
This was what needed to upgrade my stock sound system. The pioneer has a inline input that is helpful to install this amp to a factory head unit like mine - Toyota Rav4 2015. Also it was very convenient to use the inline input where you don't need a remote line at all because inline input sensing to turn the amp on or off.
abner  Apr 08, 2016

I'm not sure what you mean by level inputs, but it easily connected to my factory stereo and after-market speakers.
joshua  Apr 08, 2016

Yes it does. It has both speaker input and RCA inputs. It will work with either. It is a very compact amp.
louis  Apr 08, 2016
A
Yes it has speaker level inputs. Comes with 2 adapters in back one for rca input and one for speaker level
hunter  Apr 08, 2016
A
It does have speaker level inputs. My Dakota application is installed exactly the same as what you wish to do. Additionally, it has high and low pass filters, to limit highs or lows sent into the output, for a sub or to shunt your crossover points more efficiently. It also has a two or four channel input select switch, for ohms matching to either type of receiver. Comes with connector plug adapters and about 10" long wiring bundle to mate up the ends. It is extremely small and compact, making the install very easy.

Q
Is this amp capable of a bridge connection for the 2 frontal speakers?,specs say yes, but the manual doesn´t say anything about it or how to do it, i need some help on that regard
césar  Jan 10, 2016
1 answer
A
The Pioneer GM-D1004 is a 4-channel amplifier but both halves are bridgeable, so it can be wired as 4-channel, 3-channel, or 2-channel. The amplifier's input select switch allows you to choose between 4-channel and 2-channel mode and you can find detailed wiring instructions for bridged/2-channel mode on page 8 of the owner's manual.

Mounted mine on the back wall of my glove box. Easily accessible and looks great.
ian  Apr 08, 2016
A
I have not yet had the opportunity to install mine yet but I have looked at where Its going, and yes I am installing behind the radio, take into consideration what type of vehicle you have( I have a 06 f250), some smaller vehicles may have to have this placed somewhere else. I have also seen them mounted under the passenger side dash depending on heater core location
dylan  Dec 21, 2015
A
I tried in my Golf but there wasn't enough space. Also, to mount properly you'll need to have it against a flat surface with the ability to screw it down. Also, you'll lose the ability to change the HPF/LPF easily. I put mine in the glovebox and I couldn't be happier.
daniel  Dec 21, 2015
Q
according to the specs on this amp, it has a max input of 1 volt for the RCA inputs, does this mean my 4 volt RCA outputs from my head unit are gonna be too much for this amp ? and if that is the case, why does this amp not have the gain control on it, almost every head unit built today has more than 1 volt RCA outputs ?
della  Dec 17, 2015
2 answers
A
that's why they give 2 ops for hookup high input or rca attachments if you're head unit is more than 1volt the use the high input when use the high no need to use remote wire.

A
I jiust have a blue tooth JVC head unit and it works perfect with it, couldn't be happier. I wouldn't pay attention to the volts.
sean edward  Dec 18, 2015
Q
What type of speakers should be used with these? The manual makes it a bit confusing 45W or 100W if they're not subs, or if the HPF is used?
??????  Oct 07, 2015
3 answers
A
I'm going to answer this way...most speakers can handle either one so it just depends on what you're trying to accomplish. I use the front channels at 45W each to run a left and right full range speaker and I bridged the rear channels to 90W to run a single 12 inch sub. It sounds great.
darrin  Oct 13, 2015
A
The most important thing here is to use all 4 ohm speakers. This will elimate bridging and make the installation quick. Personally I would go with the 45 watt 4 ohm. For all four.

remote on this amp is two ways high input no need to hook up blue wire for remote. if u use rca attachment then u need the remote wire I found it easier to use the high input leads.
eric  Sep 14, 2016
A
I bought a dual amp kit from Crutchfield as I was hooking up a 1200W subwoofer, thus used an 8 gauge wire to the amp from a splitter. I wouldn't go much thinner than that. For remote power, 'simply' connect the blue remote wire from your source/head radio to the blue wire on the power/output wiring harness. Feel free to call tech support at Crutchfield. I've been on the phone with them for over an hour before to walk through wiring!
