Our take on the Pioneer CD-IU201S

by Ken Nail
Pioneer

Why would I need an iPod® adapter?

An iPod adapter allows you to connect your iPod to your car stereo, then access your playlists with your stereo's controls - a great idea for several reasons. One, you can scroll through your song titles on your stereo's larger display, instead of squinting down at your iPod. Two, you can route the adapter cable to your glove compartment or center console, so your iPod stays safely out of sight. Three, the iPod adapter keeps your iPod fully charged, so it's ready to rock when you leave your car. And last of all, some adapters bypass your iPod's internal digital-to-analog converter, using your stereo's superior DAC to turn your files back into music.

The CD-IU201S interface cable lets you enjoy Pioneer's Advanced App Mode when your compatible iPhone is connected to select Pioneer DVD receivers, so you'll enjoy onscreen control of the latest available apps with an intuitive interface. It also lets you access your iPod's audio and video content with the receiver's touchscreen controls. You'll see information like song and album titles, artist names, and track length — all conveniently displayed on the receiver's screen. The cable's design ensures maximum charging speed for your devices. Warranty: 1 year.

Features

Overview: The Pioneer CD-IU201S iPod interface cable permits direct control, audio/video playback, advance app mode, information display, and charging of your iPod/iPhone through select Pioneer multimedia head units. A compatible Pioneer multimedia head unit can be connected with an iPod/iPhone via this dedicated adapter by attaching the cable's USB type-A and proprietary RGB connector to the head unit's rear-panel USB and proprietary RGB ports, and plugging the cable's dock connector into your iPod/iPhone's dock connection.

iPod/iPhone Control: The CD-IU201S lets you control your iPod/iPhone from the head unit's touchscreen or from the iPod/iPhone's touchscreen or clickwheel.

  • Head Unit: From the head unit, you can search your iPod/iPhone's audio/video content by Video Playlist, Movie, Music Video, Video Podcast, TV Show, Playlist, Artist, Album, Song, Podcast, Genre, Composer, or Audiobook (your iPod/iPhone's clickwheel or touchscreen will be locked). Once you have selected a category, you can search each category alphabetically (A-Z). In addition, the head unit offers Link Search, which allows you to play songs related to the currently playing song. Link Search lets the head unit create an album list of the currently playing artist, a song list of the currently playing album, or an album list of the currently playing genre. You can also select Random & Repeat functions for a certain song or specific folder.
  • Passenger Control: The Passenger Control mode allows you to navigate stored audio/video content from your connected iPod/iPhone's clickwheel or touchscreen. This is very useful for the person riding in your passenger seat.

Compatible Pioneer Head Units: The Pioneer CD-IU201S iPod adapter supports the following Pioneer multimedia head units (as of 11/13/2012).

  • AVH-P: 8400BH
  • AVH-X: 2500BT, 3500BHS, 4500BT, 5500BHS, 8500BHS

Advanced App Mode: Using the Pioneer CD-IU201S cable to connect the Pioneer multimedia head unit to your iPhone 4/4S (iOS 4.2+) loaded with Pioneer's free AppRadio application from iTunes, you can enjoy full on-screen access and control of your contacts, calendar, maps, and more with an intuitive interface, formatted and designed specifically for safer in-vehicle operation. Pioneer has teamed up with app providers to offer compatibility with many of today's most popular in-vehicle apps, while also developing an expanding catalog of compatible apps for future use that can be easily & seamlessly added.

iPod/iPhone Display: When connected via the Pioneer CD-IU201s cable, your compatible Pioneer multimedia head unit will display your iPod/iPhone's stored music file information, as well as metadata from Pandora, Aha Radio, and Advance Apps; including Track number, Folder number, Elapsed playing time, Song/Album title, Artist name, and Album art. There is no music information displayed when this unit is set to 'basic App mode'. Instead, all music information will be displayed on your iPod/iPhone's LCD screen.

iPod/iPhone Charging: The CD-IU201S lets you charge your iPod/iPhone when connected to the head unit's USB (type-A) port. This cable will charge the Apple iPad.

iPod/iPhone Compatibility Chart: The Pioneer CD-IU201S cable is "Made for iPod/iPhone" compatible and supports the following iPod/iPhone model functions (as of 9/27/2013):

works great, only minor complaints

Written By JimboX, Sacramento CA on Thursday, May 08, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The cable works great, does exactly what it is supposed to...my only complaints are... 1.the I-phone connector is a little big...i had to change my phone case to one with a bigger opening to get it to stay connected (plugs in through my "Spek" case, but pops right back out) 2.its a bit expensive....but, it does as advertised..

all in all, it does what i want it to, so don't hesitate (as long as the price does not scare you off)
Pros:
cable is long enough (was worries about that) cable is heavy duty cable has usb connector in-line, so i can connect a usb flash card easily
Cons:
large plug, made me switch cases to keep it pluged in price $$$$

Pioneer CD-IU201S

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this harness with my new head unit to replace the RF transmitter I previously had been using. The install was a simple plug and play while installing the new head unit. The cable works great and is crazy long if you need to route it pretty far from your head unit.
Cons:
The price was pretty high for the cable but is worth it considering it is about as a nice RF transmitter.

Pioneer to iPhone 4s cable

Written By msh, Texas Gulf Coast on Sunday, February 16, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I thought this was a little pricey for just a cable. There are aftermarket cable available at a lot less of a price. But, this was guaranteed to do what I wanted to do - navigation apps from my phone, and Pandora - so I put out the extra money and it has performed flawlessly.
Pros:
Works without a hitch.
Cons:
A little pricey.

Pioneer iPhone connection

Written By Stephen, Ridgefield NJ on Monday, December 16, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Nice product but cable is doubled up and very stiff. I could not get the iPhone to stay in one position because of the stifness. I ended up buying a white single male to female cable which is more flexible. The functionality is good when controlling the iPhone but with my receiver I'm finding that it is only marginally better than the included streaming BlueTooth. I probably would have had the same functionality if I bought a iPhone cradle and used that instead. The app Mode that it is used for is kinda worthless and not developed fully yet and I rarely use it because you have to pull over and apply the parking brake for it to be functional. In my opinion don't spend your money on it.
Pros:
Controls iPhone with the receiver.
Cons:
Stiff cable, app mode for Pioneer is not fully developed, need to apply parking brake, BlueTooth streaming and normal USB iPhone hook up are sufficient.

Great Wire at a High Price

Written By CK808, Hilo, HI on Tuesday, October 22, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This cord works pretty well but the cost is really high and is really fat. Since its the only way to play videos from an idevice,I didn't have much of a choice. Also, this cord still uses the USB input, which doesn't allow for any other input options with the idevice. Should either be included with the deck, cost less, or use a plug other than the USB plug.
Pros:
Works pretty well
Cons:
Costs too much, is too fat to hide easily, and takes up the USB port.

Worthless!!

Written By GolfEngr1, Fort Worth,TX on Monday, June 17, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This product is not even worth 1 star. I understand the need to have a seperate cable not sold with the radio, not everyone uses an iPhone. I don't mind spending money when it is something that will solve for what I want. My intent was to use my iPhone with the Pioneer DVD reciever and display my maps from my phone (Will review that function with the DVD reciever review). In order to do that you need to buy this cable. THIS IS THE ABSOLUTE WORST PRODUCT I HAVE EVER BOUGHT! When I spend $$ I have expectations that this cable will be everything I think it should be. The adapter to the iPhone is comparable to some of the worst / cheap connections I have ever used with the phone. It will barely go into the phone and when it does the clips will often times not release. You can not use a case with this adapter. I have a very minimum size cover for my phone and I had to take it off. The adapter fit better but then would not release. THIS PRODUCT IS SO BAD THAT I CAME VERY CLOSE TO TAKING MY PIONEER RADIO OUT OF MY TRUCK AND SWITCHING BRANDS! If I didn't have to go through all of the effort I probably would. APP RADIO IS HORRIBLE ANYWAY! Simply use a standard iPhone cable plugged into the USB on the back of your receiver. This will work well for everything including Pandora. I saw some negative reviews of this cable and looked past them. I am writing this so buyers can be fully aware. Pioneer should be ashamed of this product, the quality and the price!
Pros:
The cable is black
Cons:
Adapter to phone is horrible Does not work with phone case adapter gets stuck in phone Separate USB cable has to plug in and not integrated with 1 cable Cable is very bulky Is not needed to control Pandora and use voting thumbs up / down App Radio is the awful I think this product was developed for the 1st iPhone ever and not updated!! Read the other "positive" reviews of this - you can read between the lines very easy - Thank you Crutchfield for a 60 day return policy.

Fairly dissapointing

Written By RealPilotNow, Ocala, FL on Saturday, April 27, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Cable does what it claims, but the apps (maps) tend to take a bit of "disk" space on the iPhone. My biggest complaint would be that I could not multi-task, (Maps AND radio at the same time)... For such powerful hardware, (iPhone and Pioneer AVH-X4500BT) they should be able to work better together in my opinion, especially when they are connected. I use my vehicle for business and travel a lot. I need something that will entertain, and have the capability of GPS at the same time. Normally, Google Maps works great, (no display on the radio though) and will give directions even if the radio is playing and you don't need the cable for that! Cable is bulky and would be prone to wear if you cycled the connection on the phone several times a day (as in my case). My radio is a tool, NOT a toy! Perhaps the apps will improve eventually. Hope Crutchfield has a great return policy! A cradle with this cable might be nice, at least that would eliminate the hassle of what to DO with it to make it look good in the car. As it is, cable management with a cable this bulky leaves a lot to be desired.
Pros:
Does what it advertises. Had no issues running the apps.
Cons:
Simply did not meet my needs. Cable is bulky and difficult to manage. Very difficult for cable management if you care what your car looks like. WAY too expensive for what you get!

Pretty beefy cables, especially with the USB cord piggy-backed, but it works as advertised. Charges and interfaces with the iPhone fine. The plug is large and I had to grind some off to fit my wife's iPhone case. Also, I'm not sure why the separate USB cord versus housing them both in one case.
Pros:
Works as designed
Cons:
Bulky cable, 2 cords to feed (I attached mine together), large connector

Written By LBW, Raleigh NC on Thursday, March 07, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Caution! When I fist hooked this up, it did not work. After reviewing the Pioneer owner's manual, I found that you have to also use the USB cord that comes with your Receiver. So coming out to your phone/ipod is this big heavy combersome cord with 2 seperate cords attached to the phone plug. Very ackward! I tried my iphone charging cable in the rear USB port by itself and it worked perfectly! Why bother with this cable? Waste of money if you ask me.
Pros:
I don't see any
Cons:
Heavy, way to large, double cabling, expensive!

I have this connected to my AVH P8400BH to use the app radio and forgo bluetooth audio streaming. It's unnecessarily expensive and bulky BUT it's the only way to go if you want to use all of your Pioneer head unit's features. Maybe the bulk will pay off in longevity?

It Works

Written By Mr. Mike, Adamsville, GA on Wednesday, September 12, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I only use this cable to control my iPod and access my music files, and this cable works exactly as described. As another reviewer said, it is a bulky, so I hope you have plenty of space behind your radio. The only real problem I had with the cable is that I thought the USB part of the cable would detach from the rest of the cable so that I could plug another device into, but this not the case. The USB cable is made into the iPod connector, and it is much shorter than the rest of the cable, meaning when stretched all the way out; the USB cable is only about one third of the length of the rest of the cable. If you look closely at the picture you can see it. This made it difficult to plug both parts to the back of the radio, and keep enough length to put the iPod in the desired location.
Pros:
Works as described.
Cons:
Bulky, and the USB cable is not the same length as the iPod cable.

Wow, it works but...

Written By Shadmaxservices, Portland,Oregon on Monday, May 21, 2012

Ok, so its a very heavy duty cable and works very well for the iphone 4s (is what I have). However, Its very large and thick in size and buyer beware if your planning to put it in landscape mode or switching orientations. I ordered a second cable because I didn't realize how sensitive this cable was about being in landscape mode. I actually use it alot with setting the GPS program on my Iphone.

This appmode that is included with my AVH-P8400BH wants you to use MotionX or A Program called NavFree. Right now, there is a number of limited apps out there for use with this AppRadio Cable. I use an AV jailbreak program called Display Out so that what ever is on my Iphone can be used with this cable. So, I use the Navigon App for GPS. (It's not an app supported with this Appradio List) However, I do still use it. The touch screen is not usable on my headunit because Its being used as a mirror display only.

Overall, Pioneer has the right idea with this cable add-on however, keep it in portrait mode or else you will wear it out much faster than it's intended to last.
Pros:
Thick Cable Works with the AppRadio Enabled Head Units from Pioneer Only Has a protective Ipod/Iphone Connector Plug when not in use. Allows 3rd party Video Programs to output VGA RGB Signals to Headunit.
Cons:
Cable cant take alot of Orientation switching. Portrait to Landscape (Visa Versa)

  • In order for the head unit to pull info from the phone it needs to have it opened and show that app mode screen or else it will not work kinda like when you use pandora it changes to the black pandora screen and then you can control pandora through the radio same thing [ ANDREW S   Jun 25, 2014 ]

  • This cable will allow you to select songs and most other functions from your phone. It also charges your phone while attached. [ GREG M   Apr 28, 2014 ]
  • Ye... You can absolutely use your handheld device for song selection! As well as from the head unit or it's remote. [ STEPHEN D   Apr 28, 2014 ]
  • I select songs from from both [ SCOT   Apr 27, 2014 ]
  • I just double checked, once connected, you can only use the head unit to control the iPod. [ MARK   Apr 27, 2014 ]
Can you use a lightning adapter to use to view video from iPhone 5? [ Doug  Mar 05, 2014 ]

  • No. There's a firmware upgrade required to actually get compatibility with iPhone five. And a new set of cables is required also have been looking into it. I noticed the tagging does not work with iPhone five as it did with iPhone 4. Go to the pioneer website and check out the model number of your unit [ SHAWN   Mar 07, 2014 ]
  • Yes. I bought this reciever when I had an iPhone 4S then since have upgraded to the 5S purchased the lighting converter and everything works like a champ no diff. [ CHARLES   Mar 05, 2014 ]
  • No. You will have to buy a driftnet kit and you will have to do a firm wear update. [ DAVID P   Mar 05, 2014 ]
Will I be able to see and access my AppRadio apps on the screen of the radio using this cable? [ Beatrice  Feb 16, 2014 ]

  • Yes and any video content from your iOS device, but remember your radio must be specially grounded to view any video formats. Many people ground to the handbrake or install a switch/button to their dash or console. [ GARRETT   Feb 19, 2014 ]
  • Yes you will be able to access it. It works better if you have a Iphone [ DAMONT   Feb 18, 2014 ]
  • Yes. AppRadio Apps will work. Cable is well made and reliable, however it is heavy duty and is too thick to fit through the opening of a Life proof case. [ Jeffrey   Feb 17, 2014 ]
  • I have not been able to access my apps using an iphone 4s. I self installed, so this could be the issue. Extensive internet research shows that the app function should work with any phone. So to answer your question, it doesn't work for me, but should. [ MITCHELL   Feb 16, 2014 ]
Will this cable work with a LifeProof case on the iPhone 4S? [ smhogan  Dec 30, 2013 ]
11 answers
  • yes, but you will need to get an extender. [ ERICH   Jan 02, 2014 ]
  • Unfortunately I can't give you an educated answer on this, I didn't have a LifeProof case. I can't picture it working though. I have an iPod with the typical thin cover and I have to uncover the port to allow the connection to fully seat. I would think the LifeProof case is way thicker that the soft case on my iPod, which wouldn't allow the connection to fully seat into the iPhone. [ MARK   Dec 31, 2013 ]
  • The 30 pin connection is approximately 1/8 inch wider on all sides than the iPhone slot. If the opening on the LifeProof case is at least that much larger, it should work. [ MITCHELL   Dec 31, 2013 ]
  • Sorry, but I don't use the case that you are inquiring about. [ SCOTT A   Dec 30, 2013 ]
  • No it will not [ BERTHA   Dec 30, 2013 ]
  • Put simple yes and no. Yes it will fit but because of the case you really have to push in, BUT it seems road vibration does at times allow it come loose. Works better with the Otterbox than Lifeproof version. [ GORDON   Dec 30, 2013 ]
  • I'm not familiar with that case so I'm not sure if it will work. I have an iPhone 4S with an otter box commuter case and it works just fine. The plug in is pretty much the same size as the iPhone 30 pin, just slightly thicker. But the plug size is the same. I hope that helps you. [ CHRISTIAN   Dec 30, 2013 ]
  • No it will not. I had a life proof case also when I bought the unit but had to switch to one with a larger opening at the charger for it to fit. It was just a pain having to take the case off every time I got in the car. [ ROGER   Dec 30, 2013 ]
  • Unfortunately it won't. But then again no cable does except the Apple supplied one. I end up taking my case off. I have the 4 and wife the 4S and both use that case. Wish they made a connector like they did for the headphones. [ ALEXANDER   Dec 30, 2013 ]
  • I don't think this cable will connect if you have a large case such as the LifeProof case. I solved this by removing the case entirely. The connection is very solid and you can even pick up the phone and look at it by holding the cable. I am very pleased with the interface and the Pioneer software easily picks up the iPhone input and plays anything you have in queue. So if you can part with your case, this is definitely a solid cable and a good buy. When I eventually upgrade my 4s phone to a 5s or a 6, I will experiment with one of those $30 adapters that Apple sells from a 30 pin to the smaller set. [ RYAN   Dec 30, 2013 ]
  • I have an Otter box case, and it works fine. The connector end is the same size as my Iphone charger, so I would guess that if your charger works with your Lifeproof case, then you should be ok. [ WILLIAM J   Dec 30, 2013 ]
