Overview

Our take on the Pioneer AVH-P4400BH

Step up to the big screen
Pioneer's AVH-P4400BH DVD receiver gives you more to enjoy. It's the lowest priced model in their current DVD receiver lineup to feature a 6.95" touchscreen — that means bigger video displays and a more driver-friendly menu. And that big expanse of glass will look pretty sweet in your car's dashboard — especially after you choose from five display colors and 112 key panel illumination options to create the perfect look.

Bluetooth® and an HD Radio™ tuner — built in
This receiver also sets high marks for in-car convenience and upgraded sound. Once you pair up your compatible mobile device with the AVH-P4400BH, you'll enjoy the convenience of hands-free calling with Bluetooth, along with the ability to stream music from your phone to the Pioneer. And a built-in HD Radio tuner brings you the upgraded sound quality of free, over-the-air digital broadcasts from participating radio stations.

Pioneer AVH-P4400BH

A wealth of audio and video options
You can connect your iPod® or iPhone® to control of your playlists from the receiver, with handy tools like Alphabet Search that'll help you find the tracks you want quickly. Once you connect your iPhone to the receiver with Pioneer's CD-IU201V cable, you can take charge of your Pandora® account from the touchscreen, complete with thumbs-up and thumbs-down controls. And the 1-amp USB port will charge your devices fast if you're low on battery, so you can hit the ground ready to go when you leave the car.

That big 6.95" LCD screen is perfect for video playback, playing DVDs in bright, clear detail when you're parked. Again, Pioneer's CD-IU201V cable allows you to view video content from your iPod or iPhone. Set up some video screens for your backseat passengers, and they can watch movies or other video content, whether you're on a long trip or just shuttling them around town.

Sound Advantages
The receiver's built-in amp has the horsepower to keep up with the great looks, delivering crisp, clean sound that you can tailor with the 8-band equalizer. To get the perfect sound, use the auto-equalization feature to tune your system (microphone required). If you'll building a system, the three sets of preamp outputs deliver a solid 4-volt signal to your external amps.

Stay on track and stay safe
Pioneer's AVIC-U220 navigation module gives the AVH-P4400BH full-fledged navigation capabilities, along with access to over 12 million points of interest. You can also add a rear-view camera to the receiver's dedicated cam input — it'll make backing up larger vehicles a lot safer in tight spots.

Want to keep your car's steering wheel audio controls?
In most vehicles, you can use an adapter (not included) to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this Pioneer stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and the Pioneer, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls.

Bluetooth note: Use of this receiver's Bluetooth features will depend upon your phone's Bluetooth capabilities. Learn more in our article explaining Bluetooth profiles.

Note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check Details for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver or its optional iPod adapter.

iPhone® 5 Note: You'll need to update this Pioneer receiver to enable Bluetooth control and metadata display for the iPhone 5 or other Apple iOS6 devices. This update requires a laptop with Bluetooth running Windows 7.

Item met and exceeded expectations, the 50W pre-amp is fairly stout and the touch display is fairly responsive. Out of the box recognized my Iphone 5, I know that it is limited pre-download but very cool suprise that it does work both blue tooth and wired.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This radio is easy to use. iPod control is very good, though sometimes very slow. For instance link search for a particular album takes a while. The real deal breaker is the screen resolution. 480x240 is pitiful for this radio which was supposed to be second from top of the line in non navigation units. I listened mostly to my iPod and displayed the album art. Most of it looked terrible. Like a smudge. All of pioneers 2013 models have better resolution 800x480 which makes a big difference.

    Pros: Ease of use.

Cons: Screen resolution is too low. Looks terrible.

Major improvment over the stock head unit. I only wish it came with full steering wheel control features volume control in particular. With the free adaptor mounting bracket and wire harness installation was a snap. I soldered the wire harnes to my head unit and used heat shrink as I don't fully trust crimp connections.

Pros: Great sound quality. Bluetooth functionality is awesome, both phone and audio playback.

Cons: Glare on the faceplate. Having someone with a light colored shirt ridding shotgun often times overpowers the display.

    Great Deck

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Buy this deck! You won't find a better deck for the money, especially if you're hooking it up to external amps. I only buy Alpine and Pioneer decks and this model was the only one to over 4 volt preamp outs for the price. Works well with my JL amp and sub. Lots of adjustability and options makes for perfect tunning.

Pros: Value to cost ratio, 4 volt outputs, mute button, interface with phone.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This stereo does everything it says it will do fairly well. Its my first touch screen, double din and I'm very impressed. I don't know if its normal but it takes about 15-20 seconds after the car is started for the music on my phone to start playing through Bluetooth. Again, this could be normal, I don't know. Other than that, I'm very happy. It comes with a USB cord because the USB port is in the back. Don't be a dummy and buy a separate one before the stereo comes in the mail like I did.

    Pros: Price, screen size, features

Cons: Bluetooth takes a while to connect.

Wish it was even a little android friendly, but apparently Pioneer only likes Apple. Anyways, thats not even that big of a deal. Bluetooth works GREAT. Value: This unit for this price can get you transfer Navigation(compatible apps only, this has Basic App Mode) watch videos and stream internet radio such as pandora. Not to mention this unit boasts a 7in screen, however its not HD quality by any means and if that is an issue for you look at models x4500bt or newer which are a TFT active matrix display at 800x480. This unit has many features to satisfy those on a budget, Just buy the appropriate cable for your phone and be ready to easily and quickly access your entire library of music and video. Sound Quality: I can't really necessarily say that installing this unit has made a significant really noticeable difference, (My car has less than 8000miles) but nonetheless it has. Ease of use: As long as you cross reference Pioneer's wiring instructions and the adapter harness, you're good to go. If I remeber correctly all colors matched up together but do not rely on this CROSSREFERENCE! As soon as I start up my car the receiver boots up in less than 5 seconds. period. This unit is fast and quick, menus are logically laid out and easy to access, not to mention navigating through via Iphone or receiver is very smooth and quick no hiccups. Coolness Factor: Quality gloss plastic and buttons make this a seamless blend into your dash..Also customization button colors! Build quality: Solid feeling unit, High quality plastics I fully recommend this unit if you are on a budget, look no further. Pioneer is synonymous with quality.

Pros: Inexpensive, boasts many features, easy install, wireless audio with bluetooth,

Cons: Screen resolution may be a downside to some, Limited app mode (Basic App Mode)

I bought this for my 2013 Subaru wrx. It looks amazing and the trim kit fits PERFECT. The sound quality is excellent and there are many options for subwoofers, eq's, etc. there are many ports in the back for external monitors, back up cams, etc. the only thing that I did not like is that the display could be a little more clear and less pixelated.

Pros: Great sound quality. Works great with iPhone. Bluetooth works awesome!

Cons: Screen could be clearer and more high def.

Hard to ask for more, has so many additional features that can be added too.

Pros: Easy to install, added backup camera, iPhone connectivity, Pandora and iTunes plus so much more!

Cons: Pandora sometimes glitches and needs to be restarted at the phone. Backup camera works great, but wish it would automatically switch from normal screen to backup camera when you put it into reverse. Maybe there's a setting I haven't found but current options are camera on, which shows normal screen for a few seconds then defaults to a "may be closer than they appear" notification on a blank screen, or camera off.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed this in a 2006 Mustang GT after the stock 6-disc changer died a noisy, slow, battery draining death. This is a massive upgrade! Most Fords which are pre-sync, 2009 or so, don't have iPod/iPhone integration or bluetooth, etc so this was a big step up. The sound quality is fantastic through stock Shaker 500 speakers. I really wanted this for the AppRadio functions with iPhone - you can use Pandora through the iPhone (Pandora is commercial free through any Pioneer head unit through 2013, so basically a free subscription to Pandora One) and you can use certain Apple Navigation apps like GPS Drive, play YouTube videos, etc. I also checked with Crutchfield before hand to ask if the unit could multi-task, like could it bluetooth a phone call while the iPhone GPS Drive was navigating the car and the Crutchfield advisor said yes the unit can do that. The only downside is, and I did not think you cannot use both at the same time.... For instance, to use Navigation you have to click the source over to iPod/iPhone, which means you can only listen to music which is actually stored in iTunes on your phone. The antenna radio or Pandora won't work with Navigation because you can only have one app open at a time. But still worth the significant savings ($300+) over a unit with standalone navigation.

Pros: Great look, great sound, great price

Cons: I wish the Pioneer App Radio could run multiple iPhone apps at a time (like using Pandora and GPS Drive at the same time) or at least run one app like GPS Drive, and also let you listen to the antenna or a CD.

    Upgrade!

Brandon from Owings Mills, MD on 4/8/2013

    2010 Ford Fusion
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The only reason I couldn't give this unit a 5 star review, is the screen resolution is a little lacking. The install went very smooth, simple bypass for parking break (so one can watch video while in drive); it is feature rich with easy add ons for navigation, SiriusXM, and a backup camera. Sound quality has greatly improved since the install, and the EQ that this puppy has is more than enough to set the audio to exacting specifications. The Bluetooth works well & syncs automatically when entering the car & staring it up. All in all, I am most pleased with this unit and would recommend it highly. This unit will work with an iPhone 5 using iOS 6.1.3, but only via Bluetooth audio. I haven't tried a wired connection yet.

Pros: Everything: display size, Bluetooth built in, hd radio built in, iPod/iPhone ready, add on feature ready, sound quality over stock, and ease of install

Cons: Display doesn't have the best resolution, but not an inconvenience because all text material is very legible and easily read.

    it works

fatty from Deep South on 4/2/2013

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Well it works, not as "cool" as I wanted. As someone else said the resolution is kinda crappy on pandora album art, you can tell the album by shape and color but forget the any detail. Movies look ok for a 7" screen. The display on the radio id\s a little cheesy. if you don't have HD or digital station you get 3 lines of "no information". iPhone and iPad control is a little clunky but works. Blue tooth setup is not as intuitive or simple as the factory Honda setup. I still like it thought. It's my first DVD double DIN. I just think it could have been a tad more customizable and cooler.

    Pros: Looks groovy, sounds good.

Cons: none really just wanted it to do everything.

Very impressed, looks like we spent a lot more, as with anything, once you figure out where everythings at very easy to navigate, a little trouble w/the wiring but nothing the helpful guys at Crutchfield couldn't help with. Time will tell if it will hold up, but I have no doubts (I've had other great pioneer sound equip. for years and it's still going strong). Best unit we've ever owned, just replaced the one in our other vehicle last year, now I'm wishing we put this one in that vehicle too!

Pros: The quality for the price, the ease of use, it's hard to find things that aren't pro's about it!

Cons: The only thing that was a bit of a bummer is, it sets facing upward in our Honda Civic and does not move to even out the screen, so anyone sitting in the back seats cannot view the screen & it looks black to them, but this is not a huge deal we can just put a back of the seat screen back there.

It took me a bit of time testing other systems to finally get to one the fit me the best. I have a galaxy s3 and I stream all my music from it. Some other units just would not keep a connection, or I'd have problems getting it to connect.

Pros: The blue tooth connection happens automatically when I turn the system on. The interface is intuitive and easy to learn didn't even need the manual, took me about 10 minutes to figure it out.

Cons: Wiring the parking brake sucked!

Pros: Great sound quality, appearance, and fit

Cons: the wiring was a bit of a feat. We had to call the company who made the connectors that we bought to have them help us wire it correctly. That was a LONG phone call. Of course this was the first system we have ever put in so...if you already know how to wire, I am sure it would be fast and easy!

Use mostly with the IPhone, boots up quickly & great sound. Really loved the IPhone functionality with IOS 5 - I really love how it auto-plays (no need to hit a single button) from the exact point that you left off when you start the vehicle. But then IOS6 came along - all that functionality & metadata was gone (with bluetooth)! Actually tried like heck to downgrade my IPhone to get this functionality back. To my surprise, the problem has been fixed! Pioneer released a bluetooth firmware update that fixes all these issues. Search the site for 'p4400bh firmware' or try this link: http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/PUSA/Car/UnAssigned-Content/Firmware+Updates/Optional+Bluetooth+Firmware+Update+for+Select+2012+Pioneer+CD+and+DVD+Receivers Thanks for the product support, Pioneer.

Pros: Easy to self install, setup & use. The bluetooth IPhone integration is just killer. When a call comes in, the music fades out, ringtone, touch 'answer', and there is no issue what-so-ever with the ability of either party being able to hear each other with the supplied hands free microphone. Music picks up right after the call. I have found this stereo to be well worth the price.

Cons: Would be nice to see the album artwork over bluetooth.

Be warned, with iPhone iOS6 you loose a lot of your bluetooth functionaility and app mode. Controls no longer work, metadata and other issues. Google is your friend here, research this first if you plan to use with an iPhone 5 or any iPhone on iOS6. I am surprised they still call this iPhone compatible the way they do. Compatability is very limited. I would hold out for a newer version if I were you.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed this in a 2010 GMC Acadia (w/o Bose Nav). Came with everything I needed to complete the install and keep my factory settings. Since I didn't have Bose Nav my backup camera wouldn't simply work by pluging in the appropriate connector that was behind the old unit. I had to tap into the rear view mirror camera display wiring to get it to work. Now I have backup displayed on the head unit AND the mirror which is awesome. The optional cable to interface your iPhone works great and I use the motion X GPS app with it (better than my old Tom Tom). Sound quality is good with EQ you can set custom settings to your listening preference. DVD works well with DVDs as well as with files off your iPhone or jump drive (thanks to the USB port). Bluetooth interfaces well. Pandora interface is excellent. OEM steering wheel controls work with the unit well. It took me a few times reading and re reading the various instructions to get the install complete and some of the stuff I had to either get clarity from Crutchfield staff (who were great) or from the Internet forums (camera issue) but it was worth the effort.

Pros: Great product for the money. Custom install looks and functions great! Has some iPhone app capability (wish it had more but an upgraded model does provide more I'm told).

Cons: Better instructions with larger print would be nice. Bluetooth microphone isn't the greatest.

I bought this product in May 2012. When i first got it, it was easy to install and use. (Installed it myself) I bought a separate piece that connects my iPhone 4s, at the time, there wasnt a ios6. Youtube came with the iPhone, if you have gotten one, YouTube use to work just fine in AppMode. After the new release in ios6 for my iphone 4s, you now have to purchase the YouTube app and only now you can hear but not see the video on the screen. I don't have Netflix, i don't know if it works still or not! But i'm pretty sure it does. If you have an iPhone, you pretty much have the new update ios6. (The trick. If you open YouTube on Safari, and play the movie on your iphone, turning the AVH4400 to AppMode it actually works. I do this now to show YouTube on my screen for my friends & family) It's the only way i figure out how to make YouTube still available to use for Pioneer 4400! Overall great product, after getting this stereo my speakers are much louder and sound a lot better, although i feel like i need stronger speakers. I would definitely recommend this if your looking for a quick upgrade from your stock radio.

I am pretty savvy when it comes to installation and setup, but there are so many features on this unit it's going to take a minute to figure everything out. Not compatible with 2012 Ford SYNC

Peter Dee from Vancouver, BC on 10/14/2012

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

2012 Ford F-150 with SYNC 542MSFRD1 Ford Interface 543SWRC Steering Wheel Interface iPOD interface The AVH-P440BH is not entirely compatible with 2012 Ford SYNC. Crutchfield technical support was quick and knowledgeable but despite their fantastic support, couldn't overcome the incompatibility. The Pioneer HU, at best, CO-EXIST with the Ford SYNC. Audio streaming via SYNC Bluetooth has to go through the Pioneer's 'AV' source input. That in itself isn't a train wreck, however, in the 'AV' mode the screen will go blank. The factory stereo provided the signal for the truck's clock. Once removed there's no clock on the factory LED display. With the Pioneer HU in the 'AV' mode, and the screen black, you now have no time displayed unless you touch the screen, and only then the clock on the touch screen will be displayed for a brief moment. All other source inputs have the time displayed on the screen. Alternatively, you can use the Pioneer HU's BT audio streaming, but you'll have to select your BT device manually to stream to the HU rather than through SYNC, or the steering wheel controls. Through the steering wheel controls you can switch from SYNC to non-SYNC mode, but you have to hold the "Media" button for an extended period to switch. The latter mode is required to set the HU into 'AV' mode, but it's necessary to switch back to control the Bluetooth Audio streaming. The HU also doesn't revert back to the previous BT audio streaming source once SYNC is done answering a call.

Pros: Nice clean appearance, lots of features, great sound. The icons are logically represented and organized. There are tons of settings to customize it to your heart's content. iPod interface is great.

Cons: Isn't compatible with Ford's SYNC. It's like having two separate systems and you'll have to manually switch between the two systems. This becomes a nuisance when a phone call comes in, and the SYNC overrides the audio. However, the HU doesn't revert to the source selections before the call came in. No display when in AV mode to use the SYNC BT streaming. Background pictures are not saved on the HU, instead must keep a flash drive connected in the USB plug, displacing the iPod connector.

Deviate from Portland, OR on 10/7/2012

You can't ask for much more for the price, really. 5 or 6 years ago I spent well over $2k on an AVIC-Z1 with all the add-ons; it had fewer features/modes than this thing does straight out of the box. Add in the U220 and you have a solid nav/DVD/radio combo for less than a grand. Can't beat that. The nav interface could be improved. I've used worse, but typing on the 4400 can be a bit of a pain sometimes. I'd also like to see it communicate a bit better with my Android. It'll show song information if I'm playing off of the phone's OEM media player, but nothing from Slacker/Pandora/etc. Still, the bluetooth connectivity is nice. I especially like that it doesn't require another module for that feature. Same with HD radio. I love the style of it. Very basic and clean. No shiny chrome or bright colors. I originally bought it for my '01 Mustang Bullitt then just recently moved it to my Magnum R/T; it looked perfectly at-home in both dashes. It didn't stick out like a sore thumb like a lot of aftermarket radios do. The almost infinite backlight color adjustment is nice, too. Perfect match with my OEM dash lights on both cars.

Pros: Tons of features built-in, excellent value for the price, looks good in just about any car, nice EQ, tons of customization options.

Cons: Requires add-on module for GPS that's almost as expensive as the radio itself, limited communication with Androids, mediocre navigation input, screen quality could stand to be improved.

AllenO from Springfield IL on 10/2/2012

I purchased this unit in June along with all the necessary accessories to maintain my steering wheel controls on my 2010 Honda Ridgeline and my iPhone 4S. Everything worked perfectly including my steering wheel controls and all metadata was displayed correctly. However, less than 6 months later, I upgraded my iPhone from iOS5.1 to iOS6 and it has been a disaster ever since. I have lost almost all the steering wheel controls. The only thing I have left is volume control. No ability tp change tracks. In addition, there is no metadata displayed from anything playing on my iPhone either. Before, as soon as I would start up my truck, the previously playing track would start up immediately. Not anymore. You need to manually start it back up. Pioneer has been no help. Although they have come out with a firmware update for the 8800, they have nothing for this unit. When I wrote to customer service, all they said was that they were working on it and to keep checking back on the website. That was two weeks ago. The only thing I can sau about this is that it sounds good. If you depend on it to sync with your iPhone, DO NOT upgrade to iOS6 because your unit won't work and you'll be on your own.

    Pros: Sounds good

Cons: Does not work with iOS6. No support from Pioneer.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I needed a system with good bluetooth support. Initial pairing was a breeze and automatic connection each time I get in my car is as fast as any I have seen. phone book/call log info sync is quick as well. My only disappointment is that I cannot trigger my phone's voice recognition for making calls. I was originally leaning towards the 2400/3400 models, but I decided to go with this because of the larger screen. I also like the cleaner look once installed. File support is great, playing everything I have thrown at it. I didn't necessarily care about the HD radio, but to my surprise, there are some great secondary streams in my market.. The unit makes even my factory speakers sound great thanks to the wide amount of eq and parametric adjustments. The interface is quick with little lag. I was a little concerned with the screen resolution, but aside from movie credits, video playback looks great. I was able to tweak the color settings of the hardware buttons to get a virtually identical match to the rest of my controls. Ipod integration and Pandora support (from ipod/iphone) work fine. I was there was better Android audio/app support. My phone pairs and plays music - I can pause/play/skip tracks from the radio and steering wheel controls, but there is no information displayed on the unit.

Pros: Screen size, expandability, interface, file support. HD radio.

    Cons: Android support

    Upgrade from AVH P4200DVD

Backenst from Bethesda, Md on 9/19/2012

The AVH P4200DVD came out two years ago and was an excellent unit. The AVHP4400BH improves nearly every aspect of the 4200 and therefore is highly recomended to anyone thinking about the purchase. The aesthetics of this unit are remarkable. Beautifully designed and organized. Sound Quality - The 4400 includes the same basic sound tuning features as the 4200: 8band EQ, both High and Low Pass filters, the compression expansion feature for compressed music, a simplified time alignment feature (which works) and also three sets of 4V preouts which is appreciated if you are using amplifiers. I believe the DAC's have been improved and therefore the unit produces better sound from iPods and flash drives. iPod Integration - iPod features remain the same as the earlier model and are excellent. Big improvement in the load times of graphics and menus. Music menus load instantly and album art loads in less than three seconds once song is playing. Pandora - New to the unit is the integration of Pandora Radio into the main interface. Like the iPod music, when connected you can run Pandora directly from the unit: You see the station, artist info and graphics. You can change channel, bookmark and rate songs etc., Also, your sound shaping controls apply to Pandora. I have the Pandora One higher quality service and the sound quality is very good, similar to that of uncompressed downloads. HD Radio -- is OK, but remember that the better your stereo is, the worse HD will sound give

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I received this unit this morning around 9am. At around 12:30pm, I finally got to unbox everything which included the HU, iPod cable, wire harness adaptor, and steering wheel controls adaptor. I started with the chassis first. Easy bolt on assembly. Then came the wiring. It looked like an overwhelming plate of spaghetti, but if you keep to the color code you should not have a problem. I went out and disassembled the dash to remove the factory radio. Btw, I have a 2011 Santa Fe SE. I did a lot or research on Crutchfield, youtube and google. So preparation IS A MUST. Especially for the Steering Wheel adaptor. You must go online to the Axxess website and locate your vehicle wire code for it to work. Follow the instructions to the T. I didn't and it cost me a scare, then frustration then relief when I finally grounded a wire in step 4!!! After the SWC was programed and I verified that it worked, I reassembled everything into the dash and closed everything up, just around 4pm. I turned everything on and the unit powered up quickly and before I knew it, I was bouncing between the iPod, a DVD movie, a movie on my iPod, HD radio, streaming BT audio from my HTC Rezound and setting up all my preferences. This HU is so simple to use, you'd think is was a barebones receiver. It is an absolute powerhouse. My new Polk speakers and 8" Bazooka sound amazing. I played Starwars to demo for my 2 boys and they were freaking out at the sound.

Pros: Easy install, thanks Crutchfield. Good U/I on the Pioneer. Cant wait for XM to be delivered. Deceptively powerful unit. Looks awesome in the dash. All the other Pro's on the other reviews as well. You wont be disappointed if you buy this unit. HTC Android phone works well. Pandora is ONLY for iPhone, its in the description.

I fitted the radio into a 2007 Toyota Sienna van with a JBL speaker package. I also installed a rear view camera. Crutchfiled, vehicle specific instructions were well done. Tech support was outstanding during installation when I required clarification for Pioneer's installation instructions. Came with lots of special hook-ups for the premium speaker system and steering wheel controls. Auxiliary and USB connections were behind the unit and that took some doing to try to integrate those hook-ups with the dash aesthetics. Everything seems to be working fine and the radio itself, video and audio is outstanding. With all the TATO boxes and add-ons, what looked initially like a cavern behind the radio, soon became a very tight fit for final installation. All of the Toyota specific kits and the vehicle specific instructions from Crutchfield worked great. The final product looks like it belongs in the dash.

Pros: Great video screen and sound. Crutchfield installation instructions were straight forward and installation of the radio itself was relatively easy.

Cons: Pioneer's manual and installation instructions are not very good and the operation and set-up is not intuitive right away.

This HU is my 3rd and final attempt at getting a decent sounding "budget" system in my '06 Pilot. I paired it with 2 sets of the Infinity REF-6502ix for the front and rear door and for less than $650 I have a better than a "decent" sounding stereo. There are tons of options in the HU and an 8 band EQ to tweak the sound till it's just right for me. The price was a little higher than I wanted to go but I'm glad I bit the bullet and went with it... it's totally worth it! The Bluetooth syncs flawlessly (and very quickly) with my iPhone 4, other HU's that I've used in the past (Alpine) would take 3-5 minutes to sync my address book EVERY TIME they paired; the Pioneer is nearly instant even though it doesn't "store" the phonebook in it's memory. I purchased a back-up camera from a different retailer; it looks great and the HU doesn't know that it's not the ~$150 one they sell here. I was able to find my reverse circuit so when I put it in reverse it automatically switches the screen to the camera input and then back again when I put it into drive. The boot up time of the HU is very quick, by the time I start the car, put my seatbelt on and put it into reverse it's ready to go ( + or - a second or 2). The screen can be a little difficult to see when the sun is shining directly on it but it's still readable. I am a little disappointed that there aren't any screen brightness adjustments but so far I haven't really had a need to adjust anything.

I particularly like how the volume is saved from your last phone call......so if you are listening to your music quiet and someone calls it remembers what you had the volume on when you last talked to someone. I leave an iphone hooked up at all times in a compartment, and it works great.....really fast, no lag. I have tried the apps pandora, GPS drive motions, INRIX traffic and it works great...but I mostly listen to iphone or local radio stations, the HD stations works great also. This unit was a great buy for me.

Excellent receiver. Good sound, good looks, and everything works as it should. I put in a Kenwood dnx6960 for the wife couple years ago, and this receiver is much better than hers. The response time when changing songs or entering information is super fast, and the boot-up time is crazy fast compared to hers. It pairs with my phone flawlessly and the sound is pretty good when talking. I particularly like how the volume is saved from your last phone call......so if you are listening to your music quiet and someone calls it remembers what you had the volume on when you last talked to somebody and automatically adjusts....pretty neat. I was able to put a picture of my family on the unit and set it as the background, which is also really cool. I leave an ipod hooked up at all times in a compartment, and it works great.....really fast, no lag. I have tried the pandora, and it works...but I mostly listen to ipod or local radio stations. This unit was a great buy for me.

Pros: fast bootup time, fast response time, good sound quality, looks awesome, everything just works....

Cons: the pandora sticker on the top of the unit was a major pain to get off and left sticky glue all over the top of it. some of the menus when navigating through options could have been organized a little better. This is really nit picky..... and it's all I've got so far.

    Nice stereo, horrible instructions

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I'm very pleased with the overall performance of the stereo and everything else I got through Crutchfield. I bought this unit because I really needed a rear view camera for my truck, but I got SO much more! HD radio has been the biggest unexpected pleasures of owning this unit: not only do I now have more stations, but the old ones sound SO much better! The AUX and iPod input have been much appreciated as well. But as I mentioned in the title, the instructions for this stereo are horrible. To read about any single feature you must flip back and forth between several pages: one page will mention the button used for the feature, another page will tell you what it does, another page may explain how to use it, and sometimes another will contain special notes. That is absolutely ridiculous. Sit in the vehicle for awhile and play with the stereo and you'll figure it out; but do not count on being able to sit inside, read the instruction manual and come out with an understanding of how it works.

Pros: HD radio, AUX input, rear view camera input.

    Cons: The instructions.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I expected a top of the line type system. What I received was a poor effort by Pioneer. The installation was straight forward thanks to the Crutchfield tech support. The Pioneer manual is awful. The sound quality is acceptable and the control of the iPod is good with aftermarket cables. However that's where the good stuff stops. There are issues with Bluetooth sync with my phone. An internal phonebnook that you cannot modify apart from what is in the phone. And worst of all the unit does not even support CD Text recognition.

Pros: Good sound and the display is acceptable but nothing fantastic. Crutchfield support is alwasy top notch.

Cons: Poor owners manual and unclear instructions. High end unit that doesn't even support the options that a 5 year old OEM unit from my car supported. Put in a new CD and there is nothing but unknown and track 1 - whatever listed. The phone book is not able to be edited so you get lots of garbage that make it unable to be used effectively. For a unit thatc MSRP at $600 I expected more. Guess Pioneer is not the same as they once were.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this after a bad experience with a 2011 JVC Head Unit that I bought here in February 2012. Crutchfield customer service was the best, accepting my JVC unit for a complete store credit that I used to purchase this Pioneer. I'm extremely happy with this head unit - installed in a 2003 Toyota Camry using the stock JBL amplifier and Bose speakers and it sounds amazing - a real step up from the factory head unit. I'm using an iPhone 4S with it, so far have only tried out my SiriusXM and MotionX GPS apps and they both work great. You can listen to the SiriusXM app, or Pandora, or probably anything else that plays audio on the iPhone, and get turn-by-turn spoken directions from MotionX at the same time. The Bluetooth calling and audio features also work well with the iPhone and the bluetooth calling is head and shoulders better than the JVC unit I returned. I had already picked up a custom ProClip mount for my iPhone, in addition to the CD-IU200V cable, and the whole package looks great installed and works flawlessly. Of course Crutchfield service and support are second to none and they solved the few technical questions I had during the same call - try that with another company! (I did with JVC and they were horrible!). I highly recommend this to anyone with an iPhone and looking to upgrade their factory head unit.

Pros: iPhone integration, sound quality, boot-up speed, Bluetooth calling, nice clean display and installation.

Cons: I've only had it a week, so the only con I can come up with is having to "adjust" the installation to display the MotionX GPS screen while driving. Pioneer should really release a firmware update to fix that.

Some apps like Waze work intermittently. Trying to do things like listen to Pandora while putting Waze on the main display work intermittantly.

Pros: Pandora works well - most of the time. Nice interface. Great sound.

Cons: Gives strange USB errors periodically. Have to unplug and replug phone to get audio working again. Some apps like Waze work intermittently.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this unit for a '12 Jeep wrangler 2 door. Installed easily and looks great. The favorites feature is a much bigger help and has been used much more than I thought it would be. The backup camera works really well since it's hard to see past the spare tire mounted on the back. The 7" screen is really clear and displays all my iPod album art with no pixelation. I use a 160 gig ipod classic that is pretty full, there is less than 10 seconds of boot time when i plug it in every morning. I am using the CD-IU200V cable so i get all the video from my ipod and it looks great. Some features that I use that were not advertised are the ability to slow down and speed up podcasts while listening to them, so I can cut a 2 hr show into an hour and a half. The app mode is great for motionX GPS and I use it with my iPhone 4. XM mode gives you 18 presets which is a must for Sat radio. The bluetooth set up is hands down better than the Uconnect that came factory installed in the Jeep. The abilility to adust the "loud" feature from low, med and high is very conveinent. I was able to save a pic of me and my wife as a background, which got me a a lot of brownie points. The unit is very intuitive which is great since the manual was little to no help. Overall this HU is priced well for all the features

Pros: It's just a cool unit. Lot's of features

Cons: Being very nit picky here......was only able to save 1 pic to the unit at a time. Wish this unit had a detachable face since its in a Jeep with soft top.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was happy with the entire stereo package I purchased. The salesperson made sure I had purchased everything needed including the connectors shown in the Install Video. However, after checking out my purchase, I quickly learned that the harness had for me way too many wires for my level of DIY. So I went to a local shop to have them install everything. Sounds great and extremely easy to use.

Pros: Sound and choices for the screen are top notch

Cons: The harness I purchased carried the 'guarantee' that it would not only connect my steering wheel controls but also address the RSE (Rear Seat Entertainment) package. 2004 apparently is an exception to the rule for getting audio thru the speakers. It takes a special connection / harness that is not compatible for 2004 Tahoe. The RSE still functions however sound is limited to the headphones. I didn't purchase this receiver for the RSE system but rather the audio abilities.

Put this in my 2012 Tundra Crewmax. very nice for the money. you get a lot of features. easy to use for the most part. I've always been an Alpine guy but wasn't willing to shell out $1G for their version of this, and this unit sounds great. I'm using this with an alpine PDX-F4, PDX-M6, Audio Art 140.4, Audio Control 4XS, Focal door speakers and a JL Audio sub. Total system power of 1140 watts. Best system I've had yet, very clean, balanced audiophile sound, that will get very loud and remain clean and clear. Bought this for a discount due to scratch and dent, but couldn't find a mark on it.

Pros: lots of features , intuitive, easy to use for the most part.

Cons: Blue tooth call qualityat highway speeds is not great, but the factoryToyota system wasn't very good either. The parking brake wire must be hooked up for all phone features to work, and for the DVD player to work.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought this to replace my factory in my 2008 Nissan Versa. Install was very straight forward. The only issue I ran into was the fact the none of the instructions from Crutchfield showed how to connect it to the E break. A quick call to tech support was all I needed. The entire installation took about 5 hours. Getting the paneling apart to run wire down to the E break was very time consuming. Also, finding a good place for the iPod hookup took some time. Mounting the mic for the hands-free capability and running that wire was incredibly easy. (I put it on the steering column, which seems to be the most common place) I called tech support a second and final time just to go over everything before I powered it on. Since this was my first install without help from my car stereo-savy friend, I wanted to make sure I had everything correct and I wasn't going to fry the unit. It looks great and everything seems to function perfectly. I was looking at some of the lower end models and finally decided to just spend a few extra bucks and so far it seems well worth it. I didn't want a stereo that looked like it belonged in a 16-year-old's Civic DX. (not that there'es anything wrong with that but I think I've grown out of that stage) There are 2 issues: First, I have an Android, which means I cannot control Pandora from the unit. Not a dealbreaker by any means, Secondly, after inserting a disc, the screen gets stuck when trying to return to the default position. A little nudge fixes it.

Pros: Great unit, looks like you spent more than this on it. Improved quality of sound to the point where I am keeping the stock speakers. As always, every business in the world should take notes from Crutchfield's customer service.

Cons: Motorized screen gets stuck when moving into position. (Likely not a problem for all vehicles) User interface is a little confusing at first, but I'm sure it gets easier as you get familiar with it. Limited functionality when used with an Android device.

Had this unit installed to replace Toyota Factory unit since I had replaced all 4 door speakers with Crutchfields suggested Boston Acoustic coaxials. The factory unit didn't have the power to drive these speakers after all,the Pioneer does! The sound is very good, a dramatic difference.I had this unit and the steering wheel adapter, along with the Sirius YM radio adapter and an Infinity self enclosed sub woofer installed. The installer was able to use the factory rooftop antenae with the sirius radio. The Pioneer took a bit getting used too what with the prestation setting and all,but you can get used to it after reading the directions and playing with it.I would recommend this, even though the price is a bit high.

Pros: Great looking unit packed with plenty of extra features, sounds terrific.

Cons: A bit pricey, and it takes a bit to get used to the controls.Without the steering wheel kit,you would have to remember which controls are for the volume, that part of the face is rather small for the over 40 crowd.

Installation wasn't too tricky, but contending the the host of wiring for this unit, the steering wheel control interface, and the adapter for the factory amp did require a quick call to tech support which easily cleared up. Very happy with this unit so far, sound is great especially with the factory JBL system. Here's a quick rundown of some of my favorite features - Bluetooth phone connection: you get access to all you phone contacts through Bluetooth and you can easily program favorites - Bluetooth audio let's you stream music direct from a bluetooth phone - IPod controls work just like you expect and search function. Is easy to use which is handy if you have a big music library - you can customize the color of the buttons to match factory - touch screen has good response, and while you get a lot of info on the screen it's not cluttered - because the screen is large you have one touch access to a lot of features without having to dig through lots of menus

I researched Double-Din Head Units for months, planning-out my entire audio system upgrade for my 2011 Honda CR-Z. With every comparison, I always came back to the Pioneer. SO many features for the money; I think this HU should cost about twice what it does. Incredible sound quality, strong pre-amp signals, very functional 8-band graphic EQ, very intuitive and responsive touch screen and ZERO lag time! The screen is absolutely beautiful, the colors are crisp and clear. You CAN set seperate dimmer modes for day and night, although you have to figure it out on your own because the manual DOES suck. Watching a DVD on the screen (just to test it out) rivals my home theater system. Some people have complained about the graininess of the Album Art Icons...well if you download poor quality album art, yes they will be grainy and pixelated. Go for at least 500x500 sizes and you should be good. The Bluetooth audio feature streams Pandora from my HTC EVO 4G Android Smart Phone. Bluetooth hands-free calling is loud and clear with the Mic affixed to the top of my steering column. I've never listened to HD radio before, but I'm impressed! Between the 8-Band EQ, adjustable high-pass filters, Subwoofer Level Control, Subwoofer Phase Control, Bass Boost, Sonic Center Control, and Auto EQ the list goes on-and-on for adjustability and sound-shaping. This head unit sounds amazing--flat out.

I'll put it this way: I couldn't leave my Ford Excursion for 2 hours after switching this unit on. The sound is incredible, and the clarity is exceptional. I'm hearing things I haven't picked up before on my home system. The IPhone/iPod interface is awesome, Bluetooth perfect, and the DVD? - I put on The Hunt For Red October and the inside of my Excursion turned into the inside of a sub. Crutchfield rocks!

Pros: It's intuitive, easy to use, does everything it claims to and to an extremely high level of performace at a very reasonable price. Well worth the hour and a half it took to trim my dash opening to fit it in. Looks fabulous - and the tilt screen is a plus.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I recently purchased this head unit for my '11 VW GTi and I ended up returning it because I could not play video on this particular unit with my VW. The main problem was that the pac can interface unit clearly states that the parking brake wire will output a negative trigger at all times until a speed of 3mph is reached, but the pioneer unit calls for a double pulse signal: i.e. engage parking brake, disengage, engage again. I was not able to do this because the pac unit only releases that one negative trigger. Needless to say I had other issues with the head unit. It had horrible resolution and it seemed to take a forever to even read a CD. Trying to view the display in direct sunlight was pretty much not possible. The wiring harness and additional cables that came with the unit were such thin gauge wire. The iPod cable you need to fully realize all the radio's options was such a ripoff, again it was thin and very cheap feeling. I had never owned a Pioneer before, as I pretty much have stuck with Alpine or Kenwood. I can honestly say that I will never buy a Pioneer again. The display and OS are so outdated. The car audio companies really need to work on getting a better resolution on these double din dvd/navigation units before I test the waters again. Who cares that the radio displays album artwork when it's so pixelated that you can't even see it.

Pros: Amazing bluetooth connectivity (really quick). Unbelievably quick with my iPhone 4. I carried on a conversation and the person listening on the other end said I sounded loud an crystal clear. I mounted the mic on top of my steering column, just in back of the steering wheel and angled it towards my head. Newer Pioneer models have a very nice fit and finish, close to OEM, which is what I like. If the video and app features would've worked I'm sure I would've kept it, but I'll look at other brands

Cons: Actual wiring (harness and additional cables) are extremely thin and cheap feeling. Display has a horrible resolution. Not impressed with sound at all. My factory radio (base model) actually sounded a lot better. Pioneer should not punish all users with the need for a double pulse from the parking brake wire to get the video to work. Just makes it harder for the average user to install the radio and get use of all it's features.

Sounds amazing in my RX8 with Bose.Very responsive. Not easy to install with the RX8 integration kit. However, once installed, wonderful. Awesome customer service provided by Crutchfield.

Pros: Love the Bluetooth controls for the Iphone. It even changes Pandora through Bluetooth. Incredible. Lots of features. DVD Playback is really crisp.

Cons: Bluetooth connection makes a slight noise when transferring data. To watch video on it takes a lot of work too.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

First off I want to Thank Crutchfield for making it easy to return my original purchase that I was not happy with, you now have a customer for life. First off this unit is designed for Ipod users, if you don't have an ipod or plan on buying one in the near future I would look for another unit. I did not own one till I bought this unit and it seems all the cool features were built to utilize the ipod or iphone. The sound quality is just amazing, fantastic through every option, bluetooth, ipod, USB, HD Radio. The user interface is nice, with a lot of options, great sound adjustability witht the equalizer and loudness option. Bluetooth phone calls are clear and pairs with the my Windows Phone well. This unit has a lot of features, some are only available through the iphone, like Pandora, and Motion X, but it is still a great unit. The only negative is the USB feature, if your using a USB flash drive you will be waiting minutes for it to load, and then there are no playlists unless you setup special folders....too much work. Just buy an ipod like I did. Video is nice , DVD's look great good reolution.

Pros: Ipod connection, Bluetooth Connection, HD Radio.

    Cons: USB Connection

Great stereo, saved me $30K +!!!!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This stereo completely satisfied my needs for having a quality bluetooth stereo. Before I bought this, I was ready to buy a new vehichle so I could have only 1/2 the features offered on this radio! It works great with iPhone 4s! I listen to a lot of pod cast on my commute to and from work. The bluetooth auto connects to my phone and starts the pod cast right were it left off last time I was listening. I love the fact that you can customize the lights to match your cars interior. I bought the extra iPod/iPhone cord (Pioneer CD-IU200V) which is very nice. I really can't say enough about this device, it is everything I wanted and more in a very affordable head unit. I haven't permanently hooked up my back up camera yet, but quickly checked it out while I had the unit out of the dash...it looked superb! The unit looks great, and actually looks like it came with the truck (2003 Tacoma). I would recommend this to anyone.

Pros: Bluetooth is great! You can stream anything on your iPhone with no problems and it connects automatically. I like the phone auto answer mode, it truly is hands free! Nice remote control. With the Pioneer CD-IU200V cord, you can listen to Pandora Radio and control it from the large 7" screen, the units integration is great! I like that you can upgrade to satellite radio, or GPS, just by purchasing each unit. Has capability of back up camera and out puts for other monitors for back seats!

Cons: I really don't have any but if I HAD to complain, I think it would have been nice if it came with the Pioneer CD-IU200V cord. Also, the screen is not 1080 HD quality but that is me really reaching for something to complain about. The touch screen and navigation of the controls is not as fluid as an iPod/iPhone. Like I said..they really aren't grips...I am completely happy with this until and if my wife's car didn't already have a NAV unit in her car...I would be buying a second one for her!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

So far I'm happy with my purchase. Great sound, WAY better bluetooth call quality (since it automatically switches to front speakers on a call unlike my old Kenwood). The one thing I hate is when you get into your car and you connect your phone to the usb cable and then it connects with the bluetooth also, your music automatically starts up then switches to bluetooth. So you have to go to your iPhone and switch from bluetooth back to dock connector or vice versa (which ever you prefer your phone connected to). Works great with iPhone 4S! Love the Motion X navigation app integration with the head unit! At first I hated how bright it was while driving at night, and read other reviews from others buyers on the net about not being able to dim this unit. But I'm here to let you know that you CAN dim this unit! Go into the settings for picture or video (can't remember) and you will see a setting for dimmer. I thought it was for watching videos but it's actually for everything! I wish Pioneer would have put this info into the manual. But hey there you go!

Pros: Sound Quality, Bluetooth Call Quality, & iPhone App Integration (varies)

Cons: Music starts automatically when you connect your iPhone. Taking almost two weeks to DISCOVER that you CAN dim the head unit!

    Great unit for the money!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

A great head unit for the cost! Boots almost instantly, and very little lag when dealing with my 32GB iPod. Great back up camera integration. Touch screen is amazingly sensitive, settings are intuitive, though navigating some USB or disc media can be a little tricky until you get used to it. Not a fan of having to wire it to the parking brake for the video features to work, but understand why (common sense and local laws)

Pros: Simple installation, great sound, boots quickly, stable software, big screen, HD radio built in sounds like my iPod.

Cons: Screen resolution a little lower than I'd prefer, videos a bit pixelated.

    Totally Satisfied

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Pioneer AVH-P4400BH fullfilled all of my hopes and negated any concerns I had with purchasing a higher end unit. I first was leaning toward a lower cost brand, but was concerned with some issues that were reported. I decided on Pioneer because of past success with the name and am glad I did. I wanted rear USB (no cables hanging down my dash), ipod control with fast song retrieval, HD radio (vast improvement over analog), bluetooth (this pairs flawlessly and sounds great), and the 8 band equalizer that lets you fine tune the music the way you believe it should be. I am totally satisfied with this unit.

Pros: Tons of features, ease of navigation

Cons: Small buttons along base of unit, but with steering wheel controls I never use them.

The unit dose everything that I would want and I'm very happy with it for the price. Just wish it had some differnt design features to put up on the display.

Pros: Able to do everything any other unit is able to do. Bluetooth is amazing as well as the HD radio. Purchased a back up camera afterwards and I'm loving it too. I also have the XM radio installed and the DVD quality is great.

Cons: Not easy to use when your first get it. Takes some getting use too. Still not sure how to work every single feature.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased the Pioneer App Radio about two weeks before returning it because it was not the ideal unit (yet). I got this unit as a replacement, and boy am I glad I traded them out! This thing is awesome! It virtually has every type of input source you could ever want or need: DVD, CD, iPod, iPhone, Pandora, HD Radio, Bluetooth Audio, USB, and others. Sound quality is better than stock and the App Radio. The iPod user interface is great for iPods with tons of music. DVD looks great. Starts up fast, looks great. LOVE the home button with the "app" page. I also love how a white Apple USB/dock connector cable will work for the iPod (unlike Apline units). The only cons I can find are: Do not like how the unit does not dim when the headlights are turned on, no SD card slot like the older versions, screen display can get kind of "busy" with all of the info.

Pros: Great iPod interface, built-in Bluetooth, multiple input choices,

Cons: No dimming feature, No SD card slot, too much information on display at times

I was hesitant on purchasing the AVH-4400BH, and was more interested in the AVH-P3400BH because of the price. After reading several reviews and talking to Crutchfield Tech support, I decided to pay the extra $$. After installing the unit myself, (thank you Crutchfield! Your easy to follow Master sheets helped me install my stereo within a couple of hours which isn't bad for my first attempt), the quality of the picture, sound, and color were amazing! Very pleased with my choice and recommend this purchase

Pros: Blue Tooth streaming , HD Radio, Sound and picture

Cons: Takes a little practice to navigate the unit

I bought this unit to replace the Pioneer F90BT that I've had since 2008. I was tired of the slow boot times, the crashes, and the bad ipod gui. For the price I thought this unit had a lot of bang for the buck but was leary due to my previous head unit. Now that I've had the unit installed for a few days I'm glad that I gave Pioneer another chance, this unit is responsive and very functional. The colors and the sound of this unit are great and I've even streamed Netflix to it and am very pleased. The built in HD radio tuner is also a plus, I've actually listed to the radio again instead of my music or streaming Pandora.

Pros: No other head unit can offer this much at this price point! Very responsive display and easy to navaigate! Looks great in the dash of my 05 F150!

Cons: Does not come with Ipod cable (extra $$).

Simply the best unit for the price

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I'll start this review by saying I made the mistake of buying a Kenwwod unit because I was told this would not fit ina Hinda Ridgline, which it will. The Kenwood DDX-419 was absolutly terrible in every way. After the install the Kenwood unit was not functioning properly so I called crutchfield. Crutchfield's excellent customer service assisted me with replacing the Kewood with this Pioneer AVH-P4400BH with the XM unit and iPod cable/, I took it down to my local installer and after swapping it out I was blow away at the qaulity differance. The pioneer was superior in every way from the resolution and quality of the screen the UI, the blu-tooth handsfree sound, and the over all build quality. I would recomend this Pioneer AV revciever to anyone its a little more expensive than the Kenwood or Jenson units but the quality is so worht the extra price. If your on the fence just do it!!!

Pros: Screen/DVD picture, UI, Blu-tooth interface, built in HDradio, included remote, and last but not least build quality

Cons: Wish it had the advanced app mode.

After looking for months for a used headunit (I was originally looking for a single din) I finally decide to pull the trigger on the 4400bh and I have not regret it one bit!!! I was just looking for something with bluetooth and this has it, It works great. Boot up time is almost instant, my buddy has a new jvc and his takes close to a min to boot up. Another thing is that this indash made my subs sound AWESOME! The voice improved too but I now need to replace my stock 4x6 speakers. It looks real nice in my truck, almost looks factory. I have recommended this to all my friends, one of em already ordered it and also installed it, he too loves it. Another friend has the 4300 and this one looks sleeker and just nicer. If your looking for a double din DONT SETTLE FOR ANYTHING LESS THAN THE 4400bh. I just wish it was like the 8400 (yet to be released) in the form that the 8400 has a detachable face, and this one doesnt. NO BIGGIE! its already in my insurance policy LOL

    Pros: EVERYTHING!

    Cons: NONE!

    Improvement from the 4200

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I had a 4200 for 15 months when the touch screen quit working. Spent a lot of time looking around again for something else because I was a bit chapped at Pioneer. Saw they had the 4400 with BT and HD radio and went ahead and pre ordered. It is the same basic model as the 4200, but they did fix some problems from the 4200. The track buttons now change the radio preset instead of the freq, so my steering controls are now useful again. Song titles, etc. that are too long scroll when first displayed. Looks like they broke the random button when in iPod mode though. Once you select a song from an album it stays random on that album. It use to be that you could press the random button and it would reshuffle on all the songs. That does not seem to be the case any longer. Have not tried the BT phone yet, but did pair it to my BB 9930. Took a little messing around to get it so it would see the phone each time the radio was powered on though. Resolution on the unit is 480 x 240. That 1440 crap is just 480 times 3 for the RBG color. I don't care about DVD in my car so the resolution is fine. One thing they did not fix is the loudness control. I always thought that control was for low volume and it faded off as the volume increased. Not on this unit. The other issue with it is that when you change it, it cuts the sound out for like half a second. Seems like the interaction with the iPod is a little faster and the sound seems a bit better than the 4200; I am using external amps.

Pros: HD Radio seems to work great Great unit overall Fixes some quirks over 4200 Rear USB - others have said it, and I will say it as well. Front USB IS STUPID as the only USB port.

Cons: Radio presets are quirky to set. Worry about durability; 4200 touch screen died after 15 months. Loudness control

    Big thumbs up!

Fantastic unit, does everything you could want. Nav, just hook up your iPhone motion x displays on the screen. Play music from your iPhone, no problem you can hook it up and get a charge at the same time or just stream it via blue tooth. Boot up time of the unit is almost immediate. Bluetooth for phone calls is crisp and clear on BOTH ends. Can't say enough about the operating system pioneer made it easy to use and customizable looks like it is factory colors. True 8 band eq sounds great, hd radio is crisp and clear. Plenty of outputs for those adding amps and subs. Plays DVD, CD, you can load up a sd card too. Love it. The only ding I can give it is pioneer went with a very thin gauge wire on the harness and is was not pre-stripped, not a big deal everything hooked up with no problems.

Pros: Features Operating system Sound Bluetooth functionality - streaming audio and call quality Iphone compatibility - video, motion x, pandora HD radio built in Looks gorgeous

Cons: Thin gauge wiring harness, not pre-stripped - nit picking

Replaced my Alpine CDA-9887 which is a great HU, but wanted a large screen DD unit, I was about to pull the trigger on a 4300DVD but then saw this model was being released and luckily I found one online store that had them in stock. I am glad I was lucky enough to be one of the first to get my hands on one of these. Has all the features in it I was looking for, bluetooth, HD radio, option for navigation etc. Very nice touch screen, easily search your ipod to play what you want quickly.. Love the unit, highly recommended!

Pros: Great sound, tons of features, easy to use

Cons: none that I have found yet, have only had it for 5 days.

6.95" TFT LCD Touchscreen Color Display: The AVH-P4400BH features a 6.95" TFT Active Matrix, 16:9 widescreen touchscreen display. The resolution of the display is 480 x 240 x RGB, for a total of 345,600 pixels. The touchscreen display allows you to control this unit and a paired Bluetooth device, or a connected component such as an iPod/iPhone, Satellite radio receiver, or USB Flash memory. Menus appear on screen for making function choices, audio adjustments, and setting up the system. The touchscreen display is not removable.

Motorized Display: The unit's touchscreen display is motorized. The 6.95" touchscreen display electronically slides down to load and eject your DVD/CD discs. The angle of the motorized touchscreen display can also be adjusted to five different positions to meet your viewing needs in the car.

Multilingual Display: The Pioneer AVH-P4400BH offers English, French, Portuguese, and Spanish text.

Video Adjustments: You can store numerous video settings for each source and the optional rear view camera; including brightness (adjusts the black intensity), contrast (adjusts contrast), color (adjusts color saturation), hue (adjusts the tone of color), temperature (adjust the color temperature), RGB (adjusts phase shifting), and black level (emphasizes dark portions of images).

Widescreen Modes: You can choose from the following widescreen modes when playing back video:

    • Full: A 4:3 picture is enlarged in the horizontal direction only, enabling you to enjoy a 4:3 picture without any omissions.
    • Just: The picture is enlarged slightly at the center and the amount of enlargement increases horizontally toward the ends of the picture.
    • Zoom: A 4:3 picture is enlarged in the same proportion both vertically and horizontally; ideal for a 16:9 screen.
    • Cinema: A picture is enlarged by the same proportion as Full or Zoom in the horizontal direction and by an intermediate proportion between Full and Zoom in the vertical direction.
    • Normal: A 4:3 picture is displayed as it is.

On Screen Display Color & Background Adjustment: The color of the on-screen display can be set to red, amber, green, blue or white. The background can be set to one of four preset still images, one of three preset movie images, a stored JPEG image, a video image from the external input, the clock, or turned Off.

Front-Panel Control w/ Custom Illumination: In addition to the touchscreen controls, the unit includes frequently used buttons along the bottom edge of the screen. The color of the button illumination can be set to red, amber, green, blue, white, or scan (constantly cycling through the color spectrum). You can also create a custom color to match your vehicle's interior lighting (112 colors to choose from).

Dimmer: To prevent the display from being too bright at night, the display is automatically dimmed when the car's headlights are turned on. You can turn the dimmer on or off. The automatic dimmer function only works when the orange/white illumination wire in the wiring harness is connected to the vehicle's headlight circuit.

Parking Brake Interlock: This unit has a parking brake interlock system that prohibits viewing of video programming and operating certain controls when the vehicle is in motion. In order to watch video on the in-dash monitor, the vehicle must be parked with the parking brake engaged. The head unit's light green wire must be connected to your vehicle's parking brake detection circuit.

Note: The head unit's touchscreen will display "Attention! Viewing of front seat video source while driving is strictly prohibited", if you try to watch a video when your vehicle is in motion.

2-DIN Chassis: The Pioneer AVH-P4400BH has a 2-DIN chassis (also known as "Double DIN" or size DD), and will fit in many vehicles with a large dash opening. The unit can be ISO-mounted using factory brackets. There is also an optional double-DIN sleeve (130ADTV133, sold separately) available for this unit that will allow you to Euro-mount or custom mount the Pioneer head unit in your vehicle. As always, please consult Crutchfield's Outfit My Car to verify fit with your vehicle.

    HD Radio

HD Radio: The Pioneer AVH-P4400BH's built-in HD Radio tuner lets you listen to the radio with the same fidelity as your digital music. HD Radio features high quality audio, FM multi-casting, and data services. With HD Radio, your FM stations offer near CD-quality sound, AM stations provide FM-like sound, and there is crystal-clear reception with no audio distortion. Best of all, HD Radio is 100% subscription free. HD Radio is the system for digital AM and FM broadcasting in the U.S. More than 2,000 radio stations are broadcasting their primary signals in digital HD Radio technology, as a free service. Go to HDRadio.com to check for HD Radio stations in your area. The unit's tuner also supports analog AM/FM broadcasts.

Multicasting: In addition to conventional broadcasts, with HD Radio broadcasting it is possible to choose from up to 3 multicast programs (HD1 to HD3, and analog). There are also data programs for each program.

RDS: The Radio Data System (RDS) feature displays radio broadcast information such as artist, title, and album when listening to compatible analog or HD AM/FM stations.

iTunes Tagging: It is possible to save the song's information (tag) from a HD Radio broadcasting station to your USB-direct connected iPod/iPhone. The songs will show up in a playlist called "Tagged" in iTunes the next time you sync your iPod/iPhone. Then you can directly buy the songs you want from the iTunes Music Store.

Supertuner IIID: The Supertuner IIID features Feed Forward Control, which avoids multi-path interference. This pre-detection of interference enables quick filter control and results in less distortion. In addition, the Supertuner IIID creates enhanced stereo during multi-path interference, unlike conventional tuners that collapse to mono. Digital processing reduces distortion, and improves Signal-to-Noise Ratio and stereo separation. Advanced analog technology improves signal processing sensitivity.

Reception Blending: If a digital broadcast reception condition gets poor, this unit automatically switches to the analog broadcast of the same frequency level. If this function is set to "On", the tuner switches between digital broadcast and analog broadcast automatically. If this function is 'Off', reception will be conducted within an analog broadcast.

BSM (Best Stations Memory): The BSM (Best Stations Memory) function lets you automatically store the six strongest analog or HD stations under preset buttons 1-6 of the currently tuned band. The tuner has 3 FM banks and 1 AM bank. You can store 6 presets for each bank giving you a total of 18 FM presets and 6 AM presets.

Local Tuning: Local seek tuning lets you tune in only those radio stations with sufficiently strong signals for good reception. There are 4 level of sensitivity for FM and two levels for AM. The higher settings allow reception of only the strongest stations, while lower settings let you receive progressively weaker stations.

XM Satellite Radio Ready: You can connect and control Pioneer's GEX-P920XM XM tuner (130P920XM, sold separately).

Note: A subscription to XM, plus the proper antenna is required in order to receive satellite radio programming.

    Disc Playback

Disc Compatibility: The Pioneer AVH-P4400BH features a front-loading disc slot. The AVH-P4400BH supports playback of DVD Video, DVD-R/DL, DVD-RW, CD Audio, CD-R, CD-RW, and Video CD discs (12cm only).

JPEG Picture File Playback: You can play back JPEG still images (up to a resolution of 8,192 x 7,680) recorded on CD-R/RW discs. The slideshow interval can be set to 5, 10, or 15 seconds (or set to manual). JPEG images can also be rotated 90° clockwise.

DivX Video Compatibility: This unit supports DivX video file playback recorded onto DVD-R/RW and CD-R/RW discs. The AVH-P4400BH supports the following DivX formats (Home Theater ver. 3/4/5.2/6). The recommended DivX file size is 2 Mbps or less with a transmission rate of 2 GB or less.

    • Thumbs Up/Down: You can give songs a thumbs up or thumbs down to help Pandora personalize stations to suit your preferences.
    • Bookmarking: The song or artist currently being played can be bookmarked & stored in your Pandora account.

Note: Access to the Pandora service will depend on the availability of a cellular and/or WiFi network for purposes of allowing your iPhone to connect to the Internet. Pandora is not supported in Canada & only available in the United States.

iPod Charging: The head unit's USB connection provides 1A of current to power and charge your connected iPod/iPhone when your vehicle's ignition switch is set to the 'ACC' or 'On' position. This unit will not charge the Apple iPad. If your iPod/iPhone has no initial battery charge, then the unit will not recognize it.

Note: Apple iPod/iPhone software updates may change functionality results. If you download a newer software version, you may need to reset the head unit and your iPod/iPhone to regain functionality. If this doesn't work, you may need to wait until a newer software update is available.

MusicSphere: Pioneer's new proprietary MusicSphere technology allows you to enjoy your music in a new way by creating unique mood-based playlists via iTunes for your Apple iOS device. When installed on your Windows PC, the MusicSphere iTunes plug-in software will analyze the entire music library and create specialized playlists based on various musical attributes such as feeling (bright, energetic, gloomy, relaxing calm), rhythm pattern, beats per minute (BPM), year of the song and/or date added to the device. Additionally, through the MusicSphere, you can select preferred parameters of your music to create a "DJ Playlist". You can download MusicSphere directly to your Windows PC from the Pioneer website.

    Built-in Bluetooth

Bluetooth Technology: The AVH-P4400BH is equipped with built-in Bluetooth ver. 3.0 (powered by Parrot) allowing to make and receive phone calls wirelessly through the receiver; as well as stream music wirelessly from your smartphone to the head unit. Bluetooth Technology is a short-range wireless radio connectivity technology that was developed as a cable replacement for mobile phones and other electronic devices. Bluetooth operates in 2.4 GHz frequency range and transmits voice and data at speeds up to 1 megabit per second.

Bluetooth Profiles: In order to use Bluetooth wireless technology, your phone must also be Bluetooth compatible and be able to interpret certain profiles. This unit is compatible with the following Bluetooth Profiles:

    • Hands-Free Communication: HFP (Hands Free Profile), HSP (Head Set Profile), OPP (Object Push Profile), PBAB (Phone Book Access Profile)
    • Audio Streaming: A2DP (Advanced Audio Distribution Profile), AVRCP (Audio/Video Remote Control Profile)

Phone Pairing: Up to 5 Bluetooth-compatible devices can be registered to this head unit. Only one device can be used at a time. Due to the differences in Bluetooth technology, some Bluetooth enabled devices may be incompatible, function improperly, or may not support all features when used with the Pioneer AVH-P4400BH.

Hands-Free Communication: The AVH-P4400BH supports wireless hands-free communication (HFP/HSP/OPP/PBAB) for your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone. The head unit will display the caller's information and an audible ring tone will be heard through your vehicle's speaker during an incoming call. You can manually answer an incoming call or have the unit automatically answer the call. The AVH-P4400BH allows you to carry on a phone conversation from your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone using the head unit's external microphone and your car audio speakers. During a conversation you can adjust the volume, as well as switch between the Private Mode (talking directly on your cell phone) and the Hands Free Mode. Using the AVH-P4400BH, you can dial a phone number in one of the following ways:

    • Entering a Phone Number: You can make a call by entering the phone number using the head unit's on-screen keypad (0-9, *, #, +, C).
    • Speed (Preset) Dialing: You can easily store up to six phone numbers as presets for speed dialing.
    • Phone Book: The phone book in your Bluetooth enabled cellular phone will be transferred automatically when the phone is paired to this unit. After finding the number you want to call in the phone book, you can select the entry and make the call. If a lot of numbers are registered in the phone book, you can search for the phone number by alphabet search mode.
    • Call Log: The 80 most recent calls dialed, received, and missed are stored in memory. You can browse them and call numbers from these lists.

Note: Advanced phone operations that require attention, such as dialing numbers on the monitor or adjusting Bluetooth settings, are prohibited while driving. The vehicle must be in park to access these functions.

External Microphone: During your wireless phone call, you can talk into the head unit's included external microphone, and listen to the other party through the vehicle's speaker system. The external microphone provides better performance in noisy environments than the integrated microphone found on the front-panel of many aftermarket or factory radios. The microphone features a 13' cord that plugs into the back of the radio, and comes with an adjustable visor-mount clip. The microphone measures 0.475" (diameter) x 1.445" (depth). The unit is not equipped with an integrated microphone. The external microphone must be installed for Bluetooth hands-free communication.

Wireless Audio Streaming: The Pioneer AVH-P4400BH also supports wireless audio playback (AD2P) and control (AVRCP) of a Bluetooth enabled audio player or smartphone. The AVH-P4400BH will be able to control basic playback features; such as Play/Pause, Skip Next/Previous, and Random/Repeat. When an incoming or outgoing call is in progress from your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone, audio streaming will be paused so you can take your call. Once the call is finished, your music will resume.

Note: The Pioneer head unit requires an optional Bluetooth firmware update (HW05-SW01.27.20) to enable Bluetooth AVRCP control and metadata display for the iPhone 5 or other Apple iOS6 device. If you do not own an iPhone 5 or iOS6 device, there is no need to install this update.

    Audio Section

24-Bit/96kHz DAC: For superb quality audio playback from DVDs, CDs, and flash media, the Pioneer AVH-P4400BH is equipped with a 24-bit/96kHz digital-to-analog converter.

MOSFET50 Internal Amplifier: This receiver is equipped with a 50 watts x 4 (peak) MOSFET amplifier for low distortion, high power output. The amplifier is strong enough to power small subwoofers to moderate volume levels in compact cars and pickups. For higher volume levels from subwoofers, an optional amplifier may be connected to the preamp outputs.

CEA2006 Compliant: The power specifications for the AVH-P4400BH are compliant with the CEA2006 Mobile Amplifier Power Testing and Measurement standards from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). These standards were developed as a way to equitably compare power specs from model to model and between manufacturers. The power output specs are as follows:

    • CEA2006 Specs: 14 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20Hz-20kHz, 1% THD-N)
    • Continuous Power Output: 22 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 50Hz-15kHz, 5% THD)
    • Maximum Power Output: 50 watts x 4 channels (or 50 watts x 2 channels at 4 ohms + 70 watts x 1 channel at 2 ohms for subwoofer)

EEQ (Easy EQ): there are seven stored equalizer curves which you can easily recall at any time. You can choose from - Powerful, Natural, Vocal, Super Bass, Flat, Custom 1, or Custom 2.

8-Band Graphic EQ: The Custom 1 and Custom 2 EQ modes allow you to manually adjust the level (+/- 12dB) of each band of the head unit's 8-band graphic equalizer (40Hz, 80Hz, 200Hz, 400Hz, 1kHz, 2.5kHz, 8kHz, and10kHz).

Auto EQ (Optional): The auto-equalizer automatically measures your car's interior acoustic characteristics, and then creates an auto-equalizer curve base on that information. The Pioneer CD-MC20 Auto-EQ microphone (130CDMC20, sold separately) is required to use this function. The Pioneer CD-MC20 Auto-EQ microphone plugs into the Pioneer multimedia receiver's 3.5mm mic input (located behind the motorized touchcscreen). The Auto-EQ microphone should be placed in the center of your vehicle's driver seat headrest facing forward for EQ measurement.

Sonic Center Control: Sound that is suited for the listening position can easily be created with this function. You can adjust sound more toward the listening position left (7) to right (7).

Loudness: The Loudness function compensates for deficiencies in the low- and high-frequency ranges at low volume. You can set the Loudness to High, Mid, Low, or Off.

Bass Boost: You can easily boost the subwoofer bass level by using the Bass Boost function. The Bass Boost feature allows you increase the subwoofer level from 0 to +6 (12dB).

Advanced Sound Retriever: The Advanced Sound Retriever automatically enhances compressed audio and restores the original richness of the recording. When the Advanced Sound Retriever is on, the high frequency range is compensated to match the frequency response curve to the original sound. There are two available levels of the Advanced Sound Retriever effect.

Source Level Adjustment (SLA): This function lets you adjust the volume level of each source to prevent radical changes in volume when switching between sources. Settings are based on the volume level of the FM tuner, which remains unchanged. Each source can be independently adjusted from -4 dB to +4 dB.

4V/6ch Preamp Outputs: The Pioneer AVH-P4400BH is equipped with three 4.0-volt preamp outputs (Front/Rear/Subwoofer). The front and rear speakers are fading with high-pass crossover filters, while the subwoofer output is non-fading with a low-pass crossover filter.

    • Front & Rear Preamp Outputs: If you do not want low frequency sounds to play from the front or rear speaker preamp outputs (or speaker outputs), you can turn on the 12dB/octave High Pass Filter. The HPF has a selectable cutoff frequency (50, 63, 80, 100, or 125 Hz). Only frequencies higher than those in the selected range are output through the speakers.
    • Subwoofer Output: The unit has a pair of dedicated non-fading RCA subwoofer outputs with a low-pass filter, phase adjustment, and output level. When the subwoofer output is turned on, you can select the frequency of the 18dB/octave low pass filter (50, 63, 80, 100, or 125 Hz), select the subwoofer phase (normal/reverse), and the subwoofer gain (+6 to -24).

Rear Channel Speaker Output: You can choose to use the rear channel output (speaker and preout) for full-range speaker or subwoofer. If you select "subwoofer", you can connect a 4-ohm subwoofer directly to each rear speaker lead, or a 2-ohm subwoofer to one of the rear speaker leads, without using an external amplifier.

Telephone Mute/Attenuator: Sound from your system is muted or attenuated automatically when a phone signal is received when you have hardwired your mobile phone system to the mute wire (yellow/black) of this unit.

    AV Connections

Dual AV Inputs: The Pioneer AVH-P4400BH has dual AV inputs to connect two external audio/video sources. The head unit has a 3.5mm minijack AV input for connecting a portable audio/video device. There is also a rear-panel composite video/stereo RCA AV input for connecting a video component such as a mobile TV tuner or game console.

Note: The rear-panel 3.5mm minijack input also serves as the A/V input for your USB-connected iPod/iPhone (using the proprietary Pioneer cable).

Video Output: The AVH-P4400BH features a rear-panel composite video output that allows you to connect an external display to the unit. You can play back the same video source which is being played on the head unit. You can select the unit to output a 16:9, Letter-Box or Pan-Scan aspect ratio to match your external display's screen size. You cannot play DivX files on the unit's monitor and a connected external monitor at the same time.

Rear View Camera: The AVH-P4400BH is equipped with a composite video Rear View Camera input. The unit features a function that automatically switches to the rear camera image (Rear View Camera input jack) when an optional rear camera (130NDBC5, sold separately) is installed. When the transmission is in reverse, the screen automatically switches to the rear view camera (the violet/white wire in the AVH-P4400BH's harness must be connected to the vehicle's reverse lamp circuit for automatic video switching). Automatic video switching takes approximately 1.7 seconds. Pioneer recommends using a camera with a mirror image (reversed) output. Audio from your music source will continue playing, while the back-up camera is displayed.

Navigation Ready: The Pioneer AVH-P4400BH allows you to connect the Pioneer AVIC-U250 add-on navigation unit (sold separately) through its RGB Input. This versatile hideaway unit allows you to switch to navigation mode with the touch of a button. Get to your destination by inputting an address or search through the POI library while enjoying whatever source is currently playing.

    Remote Control

Wireless Remote Control: The Pioneer AVH-P4400BH includes an IR remote control (CXE5116) for wireless operation of the multimedia head unit and your connected devices.

Steering Wheel Remote Compatibility: The head unit features an OEM steering wheel remote control input on the rear of the unit that lets you keep your vehicle's factory radio steering wheel remote controls when used with an optional steering wheel audio control adapter (sold separately).
