Our take on the Pioneer DEH-P6000UB

You want a car stereo that plays your favorite media and offers easy control of your car audio system. Pioneer's DEH-P6000UB CD receiver fits the bill. It plays MP3, WMA, and AAC files on disc, features a USB input and built-in iPod® controls, and offers a rear auxiliary input, satellite radio controls, and other expansion options. You can even add an optional Bluetooth® adapter and use your compatible phone to take calls through your car's speakers.

But the DEH-P6000UB really shines in ease of control. You'll see system information, menus, and song titles shown on a bright Organic Electro-Luminescent (OEL) display that's easy to read at almost any angle. Pioneer's Rotary Commander interface allows you to find your favorite songs or change system settings with a touch of a button and a twist of the large control knob. The 10-key remote control gives you a level of control you won't find with simple 3- or 4-button remotes.

The 7-band equalizer allows extensive adjustment of your music's tonal balance, while the Sound Retriever breathes new life into flat-sounding music files by restoring information lost in compression. When your iPod is connected to the USB input, the receiver bypasses your iPod's built-in digital-to-analog converter, using its high-quality DAC to deliver your music files with the highest fidelity possible. High-pass and low-pass filters let you adjust the range of frequencies you send to your speakers. Connect amplifiers and subwoofers to the three sets of high-voltage preamp outputs if you're building a high-powered car audio system.

Note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver.

Features

Overview: The Pioneer DEH-P6000UB is an AM/FM/CD receiver that can also play MP3, WMA, WAV, and AAC files on disc as well. It has a rear panel 3.5mm auxiliary input for portable devices, as well as a rear panel USB input for your iPod or other USB-based portable audio player or USB memory device. Additional accessories that are compatible with this unit include Bluetooth Audio and Bluetooth Telephone (when the optional Pioneer Bluetooth adapter is connected), XM or SIRIUS Satellite Radio (with an optional satellite radio tuner and antenna), and a multi-CD player. See section below on External Device Controls for details on compatibility.

CEA2006 Compliant: The power specifications for the DEH-P6000UB are compliant with the CEA2006 Mobile Amplifier Power Testing and Measurement standards from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). These standards were developed as a way to equitably compare power specs from model to model and between manufacturers. The power output specs for the DEH-P6000UB are as follows:

  • CEA2006 Specs: 14 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20Hz-20kHz, 1% THD-N)
  • Continuous Power Output: 22 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 50Hz-15kHz, 5% THD)
  • Maximum Power Output: 50 watts x 4 channels (or 50 watts x 2 channels at 4 ohms + 70 watts x 1 channel at 2 ohms for subwoofer)

MOSFET Amplifier: The DEH-P6000UB is equipped with a MOSFET amplifier. Compared to conventional power supplies, the MOSFET amplification circuit is smaller and more efficient, and it delivers increased power with less distortion and absolutely zero on/off switching noise. More power means louder and cleaner music at higher volumes because you're not pushing the limits of the amplification circuit.

Supertuner IIID AM/FM Tuner: The Supertuner IIID features Feed Forward Control, which avoids multi-path interference. This pre-detection of interference enables quick filter control and results in less distortion. In addition, the Supertuner IIID creates enhanced stereo during multi-path interference, unlike conventional tuners that collapse to mono. Digital processing reduces distortion, and improves Signal-to-Noise Ratio and stereo separation. Advanced analog technology improves signal processing sensitivity.

BSM (Best Stations Memory): The BSM (Best Stations Memory) function lets you automatically store the six strongest stations under preset buttons 1-6 of the currently tuned band. The tuner has 3 FM banks and 1 AM bank. You can store 6 presets for each bank giving you a total of 18 FM presets and 6 AM presets.

Local Tuning: Local seek tuning lets you tune in only those radio stations with sufficiently strong signals for good reception. There are 4 levels of sensitivity for FM and two levels for AM. The higher settings allow reception of only the strongest stations, while lower settings let you receive progressively weaker stations.

MP3/WMA/WAV Playback: This unit can play MP3/WMA/WAV files recorded on CD-ROM, CD-R, and CD-RW discs in ISO9660 Level 1/Level 2, Joliet, and Romeo formats. MP3 files with a bit rate from 8-320 kbps, WMA files with a constant bit rate from 48-320 kbps, and WMA files with a variable bit rate from 48-384 kbps are supported. The unit is compatible with ID3 Tags and will display artist, folder, file, and album name, plus comments. Up to 8 directories, 99 folders and 999 files per disc are recognized by this unit.

AAC Decoding: This unit will playback AAC files encoded by iTunes recorded onto CDs, however files purchased from the iTunes Music Store (.m4p file extension) are not compatible. Tracks recorded at transmission rates of 16-320 kbps are playable on this unit.

Advanced Sound Retriever: The Advanced Sound Retriever automatically enhances compressed audio and restores the original richness of the recording. When Advanced Sound Retriever is on, the high frequency range is compensated to match the frequency response curve to the original sound. There are two available levels of the Sound Retriever effect.

EEQ (Easy EQ): The DEH-P6000UB is equipped with a 7-band EQ with 6 preset EQ settings. You can boost or cut each frequency band by +/- 12dB at 2dB intervals. Features of the Easy EQ include:

  • Center Frequencies: 50Hz, 125Hz, 315Hz, 800Hz, 2kHz, 5kHz, 12.5kHz
  • Preset EEQ Settings: Powerful, Super Bass, Vocal, Natural, Custom 1, Custom 2, and Flat

Selectable Loudness Levels: Loudness compensates for deficiencies in the low and high frequencies at low volumes. You can choose from three levels of loudness:

  • Low: +3.5dB (100Hz), +3dB (10kHz)
  • Mid: +10dB (100Hz), +6.5dB (10kHz)
  • High: +11dB (100Hz), +11dB (10kHz)

List Button: The List button on the front panel allows you to the track title list, folder list, file list, preset channel list, or disc title list, depending upon the source. Once the List button is pressed, you can turn the multi-control knob to view each item on the list. To select the highlighted item, you can press the multi-control. This allows you to quickly make selections from most any source.

Auxiliary Input: The DEH-P6000UB is equipped with a rear panel 3.5mm stereo minijack auxiliary input for connecting external components, such as a portable MP3 player, DVD, or VCR. Once AUX 1 is selected as a source, you can change the source display of the input to any 10-character name. A second auxiliary device can be connected to this unit when an optional adapter is connected to the IP-Bus connector on the rear panel. Both Aux 1 and Aux 2 must be turned on in the setup menu in order to be selected as a source. See below for more information on the 2nd Auxiliary Input.

2nd Auxiliary Input Ready: In addition to the rear panel minijack Aux input (AUX 1), you can connect a second auxiliary component by connecting an IP-Bus/RCA connector. The CD-RB10 lets you connect one auxiliary component, and the CD-RB20 lets you connect an auxiliary component and a CD changer via the IP-Bus connector on the back of the head unit. The 10-character name of the connected auxiliary component can be entered into memory, and will appear as you cycle through the sources.

Subwoofer Output: The unit has a pair of dedicated non-fading RCA subwoofer outputs with a low-pass filter, phase adjustment, and output level. When the subwoofer output is turned on, you can select the frequency of the 18dB/octave low pass filter (50, 63, 80, 100, or 125 Hz), select the subwoofer phase (normal/reverse), and the subwoofer gain (+6 to -24).

Switchable Rear Channel/Subwoofer Output: The rear speaker outputs can be set to provide full range output with full fading capability, or they can be set to provide non-fading subwoofer (low-pass) output. When the rear speaker outputs are set to subwoofer mode, the rear preamp outputs also switch from full range to subwoofer outputs. When set for subwoofer operation, you can connect the rear speaker leads directly to two small 4-ohm passive subwoofers or a dual voice coil sub with 4-ohm voice coils. If you prefer to use a single 2-ohm subwoofer, you can connect the woofer to one set of speaker leads, leaving the other set of rear leads disconnected. The maximum output provided when a 2-ohm load is connected to one set of leads is 70 watts.

High Pass Filter: If you do not want low frequency sounds to play from the front or rear speaker outputs, you can turn on the 12dB/octave High Pass Filter. The HPF has a selectable cutoff frequency (50, 63, 80, 100, or 125 Hz). Only frequencies higher than those in the selected range are output through the speakers.

Bass Boost: The Bass Boost function raises the level of sounds lower than 100Hz. You can select a desired level of bass boost between 0 and 6 (Gain: +12dB to 0dB).

Source Level Adjustment (SLA): This function lets you adjust the volume level of each source to prevent radical changes in volume when switching between sources. Settings are based on the volume level of the FM tuner, which remains unchanged. Each source can be independently adjusted from -4dB to +4dB.

Disc Naming: You can use the disc title input feature to store up to 48 CD titles in the unit's memory. Each title can be up to 10 characters long.

Full-Dot OEL Display: The DEH-P6000UB features a Full-Dot Organic EL display, which takes advantage of MP3, WMA, iPod, XM and Sirius Satellite Radio, plus CD Text-encoded discs. This large 160 x 48 pixel, 3-line display makes it easy to read and cycle through the song title, artist, and other text used by these sources.

Entertainment Displays: There are numerous Entertainment Displays to choose from, including 2 Background Visuals, 4 Background Pictures, 2 Simple Displays, a Level Meter, 3 Visualizer displays, 2 Spectrum Analyzers, a Movie, and an Entertainment Clock display.

Ever Scroll: When the Ever Scroll feature is set to On, recorded text information scrolls continuously on the display. It will auto-scroll up to 64 characters. Set this feature to Off if you prefer the information to scroll only once.

Function Confirmation Tones: The receiver emits an audible beep tone each time a button is pressed. These function confirmation tones cannot be turned off.

Display Illumination/Clock Display: When the Clock Display has been turned on, pressing and holding the Source button turns off audio output, but the clock display remains on. When the Clock Display has been turned off, pressing and holding the source button turns the unit off completely. Even if you have turned the radio completely off you can view the clock display be pressing the clock button. The clock will then remain On until you turn it back Off. When the unit is On you can select between the clock display or the audio track/tuner display. When the unit is off but the ignition is on, the button illumination will light up when the vehicle's headlights are turned on.

Brightness/Dimmer: The brightness of the display can be adjusted in the setup menu. In addition, the display is also automatically dimmed when the car's headlights are turned on. With the headlights off, the brightness can be adjusted between 0 and 15. When the dimmer function is on, the brightness can be adjusted from 0 to 10.

Note: The orange/white "illumination" wire must be connected to the vehicle's headlight circuit in order for the dimmer feature to work.

Detachable Face Security: This unit features Detachable Face Security. If the front panel is not detached from the head unit within five seconds of turning off the ignition, a warning tone will sound. The warning tone can be turned off in the menu, if desired. A face-fixing screw is supplied for making the face non-detachable, if desired.

Remote Control: The DEH-P6000UB comes with a wireless remote control (CXC9113). The remote allows you to control the volume, switch between sources, pause the CD, change the display, and adjust the audio. The 10-digit numeric keypad allows you to directly select a CD track, radio preset, or disc from a connected changer. The attenuator button allows you to quickly lower the volume by about 90%, a function that cannot be performed from the front panel. The head unit also has a 3.5mm minijack on the back panel for connecting an optional wired remote control, such as the CD-MR70 or CD-MR80 (130CDMR70 or 130CDMR80). In addition, the PAC SWI-PS steering wheel remote interface is compatible with this head unit.

External Device Controls

iPod Interface: The DEH-P6000UB can control and playback songs on an iPod. This unit supports only iPods with a standard Dock Connector. (Please see compatibility list below for your model and software version.) You can connect the iPod using the unit's USB input (a dock connector to USB cable, such as the one supplied with your iPod, or the optional 130CDIU50, is required). When connected via USB, you can choose to control the iPod from the head unit or the iPod itself. (This function only works on iPod classic, iPod touch, and 2nd and 3rd generation nano only. You can still change songs from the head unit, even when you are controlling the iPod manually.) You can perform multiple search functions, including playlist, genre, artist, and album searches. While connected and the ignition switch is set to ACC or ON, the USB connection will power and charge your iPod. The DEH-P6000UB is compatible with the following iPod models:

  • iPod video (5th generation)
  • iPod classic (80/120/160GB)
  • iPod nano (1st/2nd/3rd/4th generation)
  • iPod touch (1st/2nd generation)
  • iPhone/iPhone 3G

USB Input: In addition to connecting an iPod, the rear panel USB input allows you to connect a USB portable audio player or USB flash memory that is USB Mass Storage Class compliant. A 57" USB extension cable is included to allow you access to the USB connection after the receiver is installed.

Optional USB Adapter: If the head unit's built-in USB input is being used, you can connect a USB adapter (130CDUB100, sold separately) to the IP-Bus port to playback audio from a portable audio player that features a USB interface. This USB adapter features a IP-Bus pass-through for daisy chaining another IP-Bus compatible component.

Satellite Radio Ready: You can connect and control an external satellite radio tuner from XM or SIRIUS. The head unit is compatible with the GEX-P920XM (item number 130P920XM) Pioneer XM receiver. For Sirius there are two options; connect the SC-C1 SiriusConnect Universal Vehicle tuner and the CD-SB10 Pioneer Sirius Satellite Radio interface (package item number 700SIRPION), or use the Pioneer Sirius Satellite Radio interface (item number 130CDSB10) and the SIRIUS dock-and-play adapter (item number 607SCVDOC1) along with a compatible portable SIRIUS radio. A subscription to XM or Sirius, plus the proper antenna is required in order to receive satellite radio programming. The satellite radio tuners connect via the IP-Bus connector on the back of the head unit.

HD Radio Ready: This unit is compatible with the optional Pioneer GEX-P10HD HD Radio tuner (item number 130GEXP10H), allowing you to tune available HD Radio stations. HD Radio features high quality audio, FM multi-casting, and data services. The GEX-P10HD connects through the IP-BUS interface.

Optional Bluetooth Adapter: In addition, you can use this unit to control a CD-BTB200 Bluetooth adapter (130BTB200, sold separately) for your compatible Bluetooth mobile phone or Bluetooth portable audio player. The Pioneer CD-BTB200 Bluetooth Adapter allows you to make and receive calls wirelessly and hands-free on your Bluetooth-equipped cellular telephone through this Pioneer "Bluetooth Adapter Ready" head unit. The CD-BTB200 comes with a microphone for making and answering your calls. You can hear the other party through the vehicle's speaker system. The unit connects to the head unit via the supplied IP-BUS cable, and has an IP-BUS pass-through for daisy chaining another component.

Optional TV Tuner: You can use this unit to control an optional Pioneer TV tuner (sold separately).

IP-Bus Changer Controls: You can add an IP-Bus-compatible 6-disc or 12-disc Pioneer CD changer, and control it from the head unit. The unit feature the following CD-changer features.

  • ITS (Instant Track Selection) Programming: The ITS function can be used to program automatic playback of up to 99 tracks per disc for up to 100 discs. With changers sold before the CDX-P1250 and CDX-P650, up to 24 tracks can be stored in the playlist.
  • Direct Disc Selection: You can directly select discs 1-6 by pressing the corresponding button number on the front panel or remote. Discs 7-12 can be selected by pressing and holding the corresponding button number, such as button 1 for disc 7, etc.
  • CD Track Scan: The beginning of each track on the selected disc plays for about 10 seconds before moving onto the next track and continues until you make your selection.
  • CD Text Display: When used with a CD Text-compatible Pioneer CD changer, this unit will display the titles of CD Text encoded discs that are played in the changer. When playing a CD Text disc on a CD Text compatible changer, you cannot switch to the Disc Title Input mode. CD Text disc titles, artist names and track titles longer than 8 characters may be scrolled once to reveal the entire string of text by holding down the Display button.
  • CD Sound Quality Adjustment: Using the "COMP" (compression) and "DBE" (dynamic bass emphasis) functions, you can adjust the playback quality of the changer. Each function may be set to one of two levels or off. The "COMP" function compresses the audio signal to eliminate distortions caused by the imbalances between the loudest and softest sounds when played at high volumes. The "DBE" function boosts bass frequencies to give your music a more full sound.

Note: For these functions to work, they must be supported by the Pioneer CD changer.

Just hooked up my Verizon iPhone 4, and the system controls work!! Music fades on an

Wow

Written By Paul, Guam, USA on Tuesday, July 21, 2009

I gave it four stars because of the menu options, but i am fairly pleased at how the remote controls alot of the functions, without having to mess with the knob. But overall the sound in this thing is awesome. I bought it for my gf on her birthday and was really surprised at the quality coming out with just the stock speakers. And i am throwing in some mb quarts coaxials so then more sound will come out. I wish this product was not dc'd. I have an eclipse 3100 with an eclipse ipod adaptor module in my vehicle, and it is great, but i am surprised at how well this unit sounds

Great and very easy to install unit. Lots of features to figure out and although CD is modern technology, in the car, more printed set up instructions would be great. Unit looks very nice and has quality features.

Pioneer DEH-P6000UB

Written By josh, Branson, MO on Wednesday, July 08, 2009

When I was shopping for a new head unit I was needing three main things. Adjustable crossovers, a USB input, and compressed music file readability. This has it all. Seven band EQ, TWO USB inputs and it reads evrything I've thrown in it. All at a lower price than what a dealer friend of mine could get it for at his cost. You just can't beat it for that kind of money. If I ever had to I would buy another one. No questions asked!

All aspects of the receiver were great! Opening the box revealed all necessary items to install receiver. I purchased this receiver because my wife wanted to play the iPOD in car. Very easy. Installation instructions were precise and well organized. Receiver sounds great and controlling the iPOD is fantastic!

Great Product

Written By Harrelsen, Arizona on Wednesday, July 01, 2009

This was the first head unit I have installed. I bought this product so I can play music from my Ipod. But I went a different route and I bought a portable hard drive (250 GB)! I have it connected to the USB port on this receiver, it works great!

Installed on a 2006 Toyota Tacoma.

Sweeeeet

Written By Peaty, Sugar Grove, IL on Tuesday, June 30, 2009

I bought this receiver when looking to get something with a rear Aux plug to hide my XM and iPod cables. The USB hook up makes running the iPod a beautiful thing. The graphic displays are pretty cool as well, and there a lot to choose from. As with a lot of newer receivers however, in an attempt to make it slick and minimal, there are not a lot of buttons and it is tricky to figure out some things (how to display the time, for example)...but most things are easier with the remote. The sound is very customizable with a ton of a EQ options, so it makes this a very versatile unit as well. Overall, I'm very happy with it and would recommend it for anybody.

Unbelievable Product

Written By Jack, Indianapolis, IN on Monday, June 29, 2009

I bought a DEH-P4600 a few years ago and was stunned at the quality for the price. This year, I got my brother hooked up with this head unit and I am thoroughly jealous of the insane control this unit offers as well as the amazing quality that's bumping through his new kicker 6x9's. He figured out how to bring up a letter scroll just like the iPod does (Which was a problem mentioned in earlier reviews). Just click list while you're in the artists or song lists and a letter will pop up. Play with it a little and it becomes natural to scroll through the iPod effortlessly.

For the price, I couldn't recommend a better cd player. I'm honestly very confused as to how anybody could be unsatisfied with this unit because of the lack of control (as some people mentioned earlier). And btw, it doesn't start up at the iPod when you have it plugged in. It starts at whatever source you had it on when you last had it on.

This cd player is truly unbelievable for the price, quality, control, and potential. From what I understand, it can even be connected to your stock wheel controls. The display off button is one that I always wanted and now that I have seen one, I am in awe. At night it can be irritating to have the display on.

Pioneer, congratulations on making the most streamlined, capable, and affordable cd player I have ever gotten my hands on. If this cd player isn't enough for you, chances are high that your sound appetite is insatiable.

I love Pioneer

Written By Joshua, Durham NC on Saturday, June 27, 2009

I just wanna say thanks Crutchfield, I have been a loyal customer now for at least 10 years.... I got this Deck for a great price.... Come on, that's steal how are you guys making any money? I should have stock in this company. I love the service i always get from you guys.

I replaced my 3 year old DEH-8500 with this unit. It's amazing the deck is way ahead of my last one i spent well over $300 dollars for. I did buy it from you guys. I learned to be patient and you can get a deal.

Thanks alot, the Deck is awesome. It's pioneer... what can i say. wouldn't exspect anything less.

Love it

This unit is awesome! You'll need to play around with the controls for a little bit to get used to it, but it's actually very simple once you've got it down.
I will suggest to anyone with a Jeep Grand Cherokee with an Infinity Premium system that you don't use the harness that is supplied because it doesn't send enough power to the main speakers; the tweeters will take most of the hit so by using the supplied harness you WILL blow your speakers. you'll need to get a harness that has a low input cable attached to the harness.
anywho, great product, and awesome free shipping. i got the package in 2 days!!
I strongly recommend this head unit
