Our take on the Pioneer GEX-P920XM

by Matt Freeman

Have an XM-compatible Pioneer in-dash stereo? Connect the GEX-P920XM radio to it, and enjoy the programming variety of XM Satellite Radio in your vehicle. With your Pioneer stereo, you can then surf XM's content by channel number or category, view artist and song titles on the stereo's display, and save up to 18 channels as presets.

The package includes the cable you'll need to connect the GEX-P920XM to your stereo, plus the XM antenna you'll need to mount on your vehicle's roof in order to receive the signal.

Note: A subscription to XM is also required — learn about XM's programming. Limited Display

Written By Jerry_L, Las Vegas, NV on Sunday, April 14, 2013

First the rebate is only for new subscriptions! Please note this before purchasing.

The display is terrible........ it is limited to 16 characters, but does not scroll. Very dated.

Works well, but would not buy except for it matched my new receiver. I would not purchase again.
Pros:
Matches my Pioneer Receiver
Cons:
Limited display, rebate is for new subscriptions only.

Excellent product!!!

Written By Marty W, Huntingdon, TN on Saturday, March 30, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After installing my wife's AVH-P3400BH Reciever, she was unhappy with her Starmate 8 Sirius unit hanging from her vent and the wires running to the cigarette lighter and auxilary input. I decided to order this XM unit to eliminate the Starmate. This unit did the job. Works flawlessly and it is so much nicer to have your controls all inside the Reciever itself. I ended up installing the unit under the passenger seat of her trailblazer. There was plenty of wire length to route wiring through the console and under the seat. I mounted the antenna on the roof behind the windshield. Antenna wire was not long enough to mount it in the rear of the roof like the Starmate did. Overall, awesome product. Could not be happier. Works flawlessly and eliminates the bothersome wires of the stand-alone type radio.
Pros:
Allows clean install. Works flawlessly. All wiring except the antenna wire generous length.
Cons:
Too large to mount behind the Reciever. Antenna wire a little short to allow different mounting locations.

Installation is very easy. A must for anybody that is tired of the same songs all day and commercials. Once you get satellite radio you never go back to plain ole commercialized radio!
Pros:
Easy to install, unit is very small, and price.
Cons:
Should come with all new stereos that are satellite ready.

Cons:

Dedicated XM works with older head units!

Written By Dan, Simi Valley, Cali on Wednesday, December 26, 2012

Always wanted a "built in" satellite receiver to replace my original plug & play Sportster 4. I have a standard cab ranger pickup & space is at a premium. I mounted it behind the passenger seat. I still have room for an amp if I choose to add one later. This unit is easy to mount & the included control cable was plenty long for my mounting location. After all was said & done, the reception is great! Way better than the dock & play. I wish I had done this years ago!!
Pros:
Easy to Install. Easy to setup! Easy to use. What can be better?
Cons:
None at all!

This product was advertised with a $50 rebate from SiriusXM. This was a replacement for the XM receiver add on for my old radio that would not work with the Pioneer AVH-P2400BT. The rebate was for a new activation not a transfer. Disappointing.

Works well

Rebate that did not apply

Impressive

Written By geekypete, Worcester, MA on Friday, November 16, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I knew this was a dated design, and I hesitated as the satellite radio in a lot of the cars I rent has failed to impress me. Lot of dropouts and digital noise, but the wife wanted satellite in the minivan so I just put this in. It's connected to an AVH-P2400BT head unit, there is plenty of control cable and plenty of antenna lead. Maybe in a very small car it could be tough to find space - in the van I had several options. Quite simply this thing is awesome, and I completely understand why they haven't fooled with it for so long. Reception and sound are excellent and it tunes quickly when changing stations. The head unit allows storing three groups of six stations. Definitely money well spent, thank you again Crutchfield.
Pros:
Easy Install, solid reception - can't emphasize that enough.
Cons:
None - Pioneer nailed this a long time ago.

Great device and perfect for your Pioneer

Written By KevinP, Pullman, WA on Saturday, October 20, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great device, antenna is very small, lots of wire to place it just about anywhere. Plugs into your IP bus, Yellow wire ties into your wire harness, and that is about it. That easy. Great reception, have not had any problems with dropped signal and I live in the Palouse with lots of hills.
Pros:
small antenna, smaller than most you see on the install videos. Easy install when used with your Pioneer stereo. Works great on hills and dips.
Cons:
Will lose signal in long tunnels. Not a built in product so you will need to find a spot under the dash.

Quality XM Receiver fo my 2009 Toyota Tacoma

Written By Tom S, Bowie, MD on Friday, September 14, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great receiver that fits under the front passenger seat. I coupled this receiver with a Pioneer AVH-P33000 BT receiver I had purchased last year. I was using an XM MyFi but just got tired of all the little extras that I had to do for the XM to work. Now it is just start up the Tacoma and up pops the XM. . The Install was very straight forward and easy to accomplish. Installation is a lot easier with the passenger seat removed and the shifter console removed. Just make sure the battery cables are disconnected before starting any work and to reinstall the seat prior to bringing the battery back on line. The Tacoma is blessed with a large open wire raceway in the console to the instrument cluster that houses the radio, My 2009 Tacoma already has the XM roof antenna installed and I had already purchased the Toyota Lexus cable that goes from the Tacoma wiring block to the existing MyFi. I did have to cut the end off of that cable and the antenna off of the supplied cable and solder the splice of the cables to obtain one cable that went from the wiring block to the Pioneer XM receiver. This is necessary because both connections require a unique cable end.

The sound quality is excellent and the information displayed on the receiver screen is a big improvement. I also like how the presets are available with one touch of the screen.
Pros:
Easy navigation of XM channels Easy to read XM song and artist information Easy install even for a non do it yourself owner. Great sound and channel receiving.
Cons:
Non so far. Wish I had done this last year when I bought the Pioneer receiver.

09 Mustang coupe install!

Written By Bill, Chesapeake, VA on Tuesday, July 31, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Just finished installing this unit in my 09 Mustang Coupe. I located it in the trunk on the right hand side where the OEM Sirius receiver is at. I used the OEM antenna as well by removing the plastic plug from around the antenna connector and it then fits fine in the GEX-P920XM. I ran all the HU connections down the passenger side under carpet and trim moldings. Everything works like a champ!
Pros:
Easy Install, great sound quality!
Cons:
Unit is rather large

Pioneer GEX P920XM

Written By Jim C, Gautier, MS on Tuesday, July 10, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Equipment is top quality. Comes with adequate length of cable to allow installation in the trunk or rear of the vehicle. If purchased with the Pioneer Radio the pictorial installation kit will get you through the job pretty good. Installation is more challenging due to the fact that you will have to find a location to mount the radio, run the cables through the paneling and trim and find a good ground. Recommend you follow the drawings and remove the panels as directed. Some components may look like you can pop them out but actually has screws inside. You may want to opt for a professional install or just cover the cord with a protective floor cover.
Pros:
Pretty self contained install. Plugs in back of Pioneer radio and the SirusXM receiver. Mount bracket included to secure to the vehicle with screws. Sufficient cord to allow installation in trunk or rear of vehicle.
Cons:
The dash area is minimal so you will have to mount under a seat or run the cabling through the panels and trim to the trunk/rear section. That can be intensive but the pictorial is included in the radio package. The unit cable contains the control wires and the hot voltage lead. A ground lead runs from the unit cable jack and you will have to find a good ground point to affix to near the receiver. Knowledge and use of a multimeter is recommended.

-just a tad short GEX-P920XM tuner-

Written By NeilT, Tulsa on Friday, June 29, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Wondered where to install it...solved by a short antenna lead... under the RH front seat in my Toyota 2004 4runner, where it performs very well, matched with a FH-P8000BT head unit. Easily installed, great quality, the very satisfactory result of an eight week search and installation involving other head units and tuners, coupled with step by step tech support.
Pros:
Great quality, ease of installation.
Cons:
Short antenna, about ten feet in fact compared to a previously tried Sirius.

GEX-P920XM

Written By Ben C, RI on Saturday, June 23, 2012

Easy to hook up, antenna wire was not long enough to go to the center of the car, I put the box in the passenger foot well but had plenty of wire to move it back if I wanted to so I am not going to take a star off for that. I have been using a external xm receiver for years now and this is by far better than any of them. Connected to Pioneer AVH-P2400BT.

It's 2012, time to invest in some R&D

Written By Rob B, NJ on Thursday, May 24, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I think it's time Pioneer redesigns their interface. This box has been around nearly 5 years and electronics have become a bit smaller and less power hungry. Take a look at the satellite tuner that Alpine/JVC/Kenwood use. It's smaller than a deck of cards and gets everything done with a single cable (plus an antenna wire, of course).
Pros:
It works like it should.
Cons:
Flipping through channels is slow. It's the size of a VCR. You need to hard wire it. Uses the old style XM antenna plug with the red clip, so I had to run a second antenna in my car.

I got sick of AM/FM radio, hearing the 25th caller will get a prize, commercial after commercial. so i bought this unit. i have XM in my other car and thought i could live without it in my work car, but i couldnt take it anymore. the unit sounds a little thin but its better than radio. the bitter part.. XM uses overseas agents. when you have issues and ask for a manager they put you on hold... and never come back.. the FCC should get involved.
Pros:
straight music, no commercials
Cons:
unit has thin sound, so crank up the EQ. non-american customer support from XM.

Niasan 2008 Frontier CC 4WD

Written By Walter Wright, Colorado Springs on Sunday, April 15, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

When paired with the Pioneer AVH2400BT, it works OK. Crisp clear sound. No distortion. Removed front passenger seat and installed unit under seat carpet. Most of extra wiring was placed in right side panel under dash. Wiring was easy except for the antenna. This was a bit challenging. The high mounted stop light was partially removed by loosening (but not removing) the two nuts with an 8 mm deep socket wrench. The antenna wire was then snaked inside the vehicle, behind the headliner and along the inside of the right back panel and door weather strip down the floor. The rest is easy. A small amount of RTV silicone gasket maker was used to help seal the wire where it goes inside the high mounted stop light. The antenna is barely visible and reception is excellent. It would have been better if Crutchfield had an adapter to tap into the vehicles antenna system, but this seems to work well. We will check closely after the first rain to see if additional caulk or sealer is necessary. We used double sided sticky tape to secure the side brackets of the radio to the floor. Also, we placed a piece of cardboard under unit so that it was not directly touching the metal floor. The screws were not used.
Pros:
Good reception with outside antenna and fairly straight forward install.
Cons:
Having to run the antenna wire so that the install looks professional was a slight challenge.

Great with P8400BH

Written By Bill, Jamestown, NY on Monday, April 02, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Mounted behind the rear seats of my 2008 Colorado Crew Cab. Took my time running all of the wires so they couldnlt be seen and was done and activated in less than 90 minutes. I've had a dash mount XM for years and this unit absolutely puts those to shame! The sound, paired up with my P8400BH is amazing clear and loud! I no longer need to change FM stations in cities or look at wires connected to the front of my stereo. Simple, clean and really cheap after the current rebate - available with an online application.
Pros:
Awesome sound No volume loss that you experience with FM Modular units Clean installation Don't need to search for available FM stations when in cities No looking at wires attached to the aux port on the front of the stereo Enough Bus cable to find a good place in your vehicle to hide the unit
Cons:
Takes a little time to install securely and hide wires

Not the best XM radio, but it works

Written By Mark B, Chicago, IL on Monday, April 02, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It works, but that's about it. It's big and awkward. It uses a proprietary cables for everything, so it's useless without a Pioneer IP bus head unit. I've used this unit on two different radios, and it doesn't scroll artist or song names. My head unit (4400BH) scrolls names on MP3 CD's and USB sticks, but not on the XM unit. Occasionally when switching channels it looses signal and you have to turn off and on your head unit to make it work again.

Not the greatest XM receiver, but it's kind of the only game in town if you have a Pioneer unit and you don't want an extra display.
Pros:
XM radio.
Cons:
No scrolling of long Artist, song, etc. Big box Useless without pioneer head unit.

Works Perfectly

Written By Billy, California on Friday, March 09, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Worked perfectly with my new Pioneer DEH-P7400HD. Installed in 2006 Chevy pickup that had factory XM and was able to use the factory XM antenna with this adapter http://www.xm-radio-satellite.com/FAKRA_Adapter_Cable_for_SIRIUS_XM_SMB_Antennas_SMB_FKA.aspx it is a FAKRA Adapter Cable for SIRIUS XM SMB Antennas. This made the installation almost too easy. Would recommend to any one who wants to keep XM Satellite.
Pros:
Super easy install since I did not have to run another antenna. Small unit installed in same location as a factory XM tuner. Pioneer IP-Bus cable is very long is you need to mount far away from Radio.
Cons:
The hardest thing was removing the old XM tuner to make room for the Pioneer XM tuner. Pioneer IP-Bus cable is very long and I mounted very close to Radio so I needed to find a location for extra cable.

Mostly Happy

Written By BW, Georgia on Thursday, February 02, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installation was simple! and placement (under the passenger seat) was easy, I just took out four bolts, unplugged the Airbag sensor and boom.
Pros:
I am in my car an hour and 20 minutes ONE WAY every day. It is nice to have solid clear radio the whole time. Many channels, and genres to choose from. Limited chatter by the djs.
Cons:
Sometimes I catch the voice and speaking to sound a little 'digitized'. Not the fault of the product I'm assuming but there it is. Also, more frustrating and if it keeps happening I will return it, but three times since installation a month ago it has just gone silent. I have had to call XM to get them to send a refresh signal. A real pain in the rump.

Finally! A solid way to access XM!

Written By Jer, Las Vegas, NV on Thursday, November 24, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Does what it should! It doesn't feel like an add-on, it just "upgrades your head unit". Clean and clear sound, nothing like the FM modulation add-on units. If you like XM, get this. I installed 2 (one in my car, one in my wife's), and both antennas were installed INSIDE, near the bottom of the windshield (which works perfectly). And, as usual, Crutchfield's service was so good I actually laughed out loud a few times when I got a call or email before, during, and after the sale. They REALLY stick with you the whole way, it's uncanny.
Pros:
Ease of installation. Reliable. Comes with everything you need.
Cons:
The actual hardware box is BIG. Make sure to plan your install carefully, so you make room for it and plan your wiring (which Pioneer supplies in GREAT supply).

Over all this is a great product but be prepaired to come up with way to hide your antenna wire. Crutchfield will not send up an install guide for this product like they do for the speakers or Dash receiver. I just went to u-tube for ideals.
Pros:
Just plug & play, works great in my 2005 Ford F150 Crew Cab.
Cons:
The diagram just shows how to install it on a car, but I have a truck.

Matched with P2300-DVD

Written By Blues Man Z, Cary, NC on Tuesday, September 06, 2011

Excellent add on to Pioneer Head AVH-P2300-DVD. Very easy to install. Comes with plenty of cable and antenna wire for rear of roof mount on my Mustang. XM is a must have in North Carolina (unless you want to hear Elton John or Dream Weaver every 5 minutes. No Thanks!) I used to have a portable XM unit with the hanging input wires and antenna wires. This eliminates all that and the sound is so much better than thru an FM Modulator. Great job Pioneer. Buy now from Crutchfield! You get fast delivery, and tech support if needed.

It. Just. Works.

Written By Jeff W, Washington, DC on Monday, September 05, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I got this unit after fighting with a JVC head unit and the Audiovox XM tuner for JVC radios. Two different Audiovox units and both worked *once* with the headunit. I returned the JVC radio (which admitedly was fairly nice) and the Audiovox for a Pioneer AVH-P2300DVD and the Pioneer XM tuner.

No fighting, just plugged it in and viola!, XM satradio. A bit large, but the ease of installation (no d/l'ing firmware, no separate adapter cable) and the solid design with the metal enclosure more than makes up for the size. And a bonus, it costs less than the miserable Audiovox!

Major kudos to Crutchfield and their tech support crew for making an unpleasant situation into a painless transaction and successful install.

Connected to my 10 year old Pioneer stereo without a problem. Basically, plug and play. The supplied magnetic mount antenna is small and virtually unnoticeable. The unit has a very low profile and was easy to mount. I'm very impressed that Pioneer supports their equipment as they do.

Pioneer GEX-P920XM

This unit works great and was easy to install. I didn't use the supplied antenna but used one that I attached to the inside glass just in front of the rear view mirror. Surprisingly, it worked just as well as an external antenna I put the XM receiver under the passenger front seat and really the only dilemma I had was how to cleanly route all the cables. It does all that an XM radio needs to do for me . I'm very happy.

Pioneer XM Reciever

Written By JerryL, Sunset, UT on Thursday, June 23, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Easy to install. It took me a total of about two and a half hours until I was listening to Margaritaville. That included the time to remove the passenger and rear seats in my Mustang, fishing the cable under the carpet, mounting the unit, and putting everything back together. It also included half an hour on the phone to XM for a problem they couldn't solve. I called tech support at Crutchfield and Rudy immediately diagnosed the problem and I had it fixed in under five minutes. This kind of customer service will keep me coming back.

Pioneer GEX-P920XM

Written By Robert In Branford, Branford, CT on Tuesday, May 10, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The unit functions about the same as the little add on receivers from XM. It's
made to be mounted under a seat I believe because of the very long wires to
connect to the Pioneer radio and the antenna. I had room to mount it behind the
radio in the dash, which left an awful lot of wire to connect to the radio,
which I coiled. However, the antenna wire was not long enough from this location
to reach the rear of the roof on my Sonata. I had barely enough wire to mount it
on the trunk lid. I could have mounted it on the front of the roof but I opted
not to. Also, there is no buffer or it's very small as I loose signal for a
second or 2 on the highway when I go under a bridge. It's also a little pricy
since the Pioneer radio is set to receive XM signals. I found that the best
price is at Crutchfield.

I've had the unit for about 5 years now and it had been fine. Recently it stopped
operating. The head unit recognizes the 920 but the display reads "No Signal" including
for the preview channel. I have tried reseting the 920 as well as reseting my XM account.

I am about to buy another one, but only because I cannot afford to replace the whole
system right now.

Frustrating to say the least!

Worked for a Year

Written By JoeH, Concord, CA on Thursday, October 21, 2010
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am about to purchase another one of these units, but unfortunately not because I'm adding one to another vehicle; instead, I have to replace the one that just malfunctioned in my car.

It worked fine for about 10 mo.'s or so, but then just randomly shut off one day. It turned back on after a while, and worked for another day or so, then shut off again. It turned back on again, but only to shut off after only an hour + of use. The time periods during which it would function normally between shut-offs became less and less, until it stopped working all together.

I called Pioneer, and they needed my original sales receipt (which I didn't keep - I know, stupid) in order to exchange it for a new one, an outcome that I was expecting, but what caught me by surprise is that they don't even make parts for repairs for this unit. I guess they just figure that customers would rather just go buy a new product rather than having it fixed. Anyway, I thought that was weird.

Suffice to say that I will DEFINITELY be keeping my sales receipt from my next purchase of this unit, so that in case it suffers the same fate as my last one, I'll at least have a chance at not being forced to buy a third one...

This unit is a lot of things : easy to install , relatively inexpensive , but my biggest rave for it is that it makes XM use seamless . No separate controllers hanging off of the dash . Everything contained in the Pioneer head unit. I think it will make XM safer to use for my 16 year old daughter , who is receiving this in her birthday gift from her aunt.

I love this unit. I have installed 2 of these units and have found it to be extremely easy. The
sound quality is excellent and the reception is the same. I love the fact that I don't have an
extra control panel cluttering up my car which having a '97 Toyota Carolla is very limited on
space. I have been using my original unit for 6 years and just recently installed a second in a
GMC Jimmy. I would recommend this unit to anyone who likes to keep things looking clean and

Pioneer GEX-P920XM

Written By Mike, Allentown, PA on Sunday, January 31, 2010
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Sound quality of this unit is very good... better than any of the external solutions I've
listened to. It's display is a bit limited compared to a native XM receiver, but the head unit
I have is only 16 characters, so that may be the limiting factor there. One downside of
this unit is the use of older style antenna connectors... I can no longer use my "through
the windshield" antenna, which for reasons I won't go into here is a real problem for me.
The other is reliability. I've had to press the reset on the unit twice now. It displays the
station you're listening to, but the sound fades out like you've lost the station - only it
never returns. The only way to get the sound back is to hit the reset (I've checked
connections, mounting position, ground and antenna placement) which also wipes your
presets. I've been using the unit for two weeks now, and this has happened twice.

Works great-NOW

Written By Steve, Columbus, Ohio on Sunday, January 24, 2010
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Initially it didn't work and I thought I had it grounded on a threaded stud
under the passenger front seat. I guess the stud had paint or some coating on
it. When I decided to put a bolt on the stud to secure the ground wire it must
have worn off the paint (I had a hard time finding the right bolt and used one
that I had to ratchet on). Then I checked and the XM tuner now worked.
Crutchfield was going to send me a new receiver and tuner so I had to get on the
phone in a hurry and have it canceled. Hope this helps others avoid this same
situation.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Easy to install and works just fine. Miles ahead of using an FM modulator. If you enjoy XM radio and have a Pioneer head, this is the way to go! I have one in each of my pick-ups and always install them behind the front dash, so I never run anything back to front. The easy way to do the antenna is just run the lead behind the weather deal on the door. That way leaves only an inch of two of antenna lead visible and the antenna sits on the front corner of the roof on the driver's side. If you have a head with Bluetooth capability, run your mike lead at the same time.

I can't believe this unit. I should of installed this a long time ago. It was very easy to install. Sound is amazing, clarity is awesome, reception is outstanding, and it just works. I previously had the Sirius Connect hardware in my Colorado. It kept locking up, sound was not that great, and the volume was much lower than any other audio source. The 920XM cured all of my problems. If you have a Pioneer head unit and are trying to decide between XM and Sirius, go XM all the way. You will not be disapointed!

Written By Bob, Blythewood, SC on Wednesday, August 05, 2009
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased the Pioneer sat-ready head unit for my Ford Ranger mostly for the bluetooth but the XM capability was an EXCELLENT bonus! I found the Pioneer GEX-P920XM and was immediately impressed with the ease in which it was to install. Once hooked up, I was exponentially impressed with the reception that this receiver got. I had an old SkyFi2 unit in the truck before and lost signal under most bridges and even over-hanging trees. This unit has only lost the signal if I'm in a tunnel or stopped under a bridge for an extended amount of time. I would recommend this unit to ANYONE that has a sat-ready head unit!

Had to get this to go with my new Pioneer receiver. Installation in my GMC
Sierra was pretty easy. I installed under the rear seat on the drivers side.
Installing the antenna was a little more involved. I ran the cable under the
kick panel to the front door and went out around the boot that connects
the wiring to the front door. From there, it was easy to run the cable in the
weatherstripping to the top of the windshield. Getting the boot out was
easy, but putting it back took some effort. All in all, probably easier than
going through the 3rd brake light. Sound and station choice is excellent.

I installed the receiver effortlessl under the rear seat carpet of my 2000 Chevy Siverado Extended Cab. The ONLY 'difficulty' I saw was in running the antenna wire from the centerline of the roof through the 3rd brake light. It was going to be pretty much a major job. I took the truck to a local electronics sales store that sold XM antenna's. They installed the antenna for me for $40. It took two technicians 3 hours to remove everything and put it all back together. Best $40 I ever spent. The unit works flawlessly, excellent reception and I couldn't be happier. I have XM in another vehicle and my home and wanted it in my 2-month old truck.

Simply amazing

Written By Russell, Sacramento, CA on Wednesday, January 28, 2009
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I knew when I bought this that it was tops as far as sattelite receivers go. I didn't realize how good it was until i got it installed. The installation itself wasn't too bad. I installed it in a 2005 Nissan Xterra with a Pioneer AVIC 900FT head unit. Since I was installing the NAV and back up camera at the same time it took a little while but I had everything installed in 1 day. The reception is simply ridiculous. The biggest thing is how much better it was than the factory XM system that was installed in my 2008 Chevy Colorado. I actually get reception in my garage, while it closed. My Colorado didn't get reception with the antenna being just inside the door with it open. The clarity and quality is everything I've come to expect from a sattelite system. I can only say that it's simply amazing. I don't think my wife listens to her AM/FM receiver anymore.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Routing wires and running leads to make a professional accessory installation is never a quick project if you are a do-it yourselfer like me. Pioneer simplifies the process by supplying long wires and plug and play compatibility. Great product with good sound. The only reason o give it a 4 is really a function of he deh-p4000ub receiver. The information displayed when in xm mode is either the channel number, station name, or program title, but never a combination of the group. With so many channels on xm this can be a pain when browsing, because one must tap the display button to change the search mode (channel, category, ect). A minor issue though.

Superior to predecessor

Written By jetfuel, Elk Grove, CA on Tuesday, January 20, 2009
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This unit replaced a GEX-P910XM because the 910 wasn't compatible with the new receiver I decided to install.

The 920 is much faster to change channels -- the display data appears and the music plays in about 30% the time as the 910.

I noticed that the antenna (included with this model!) is the single-connector type, unlike the 2-connector type of the 910.

Installation was a breeze: it's tucked up between the rear speakers of my 2002 Mustang. You have to really look for it to find it!

My daughter and I installed the Pioneer GEX-P920XM with her new Pioneer DEH-P4000UB into her 1999 Honda Civic. The install was easy, plug and play. It operates seamlessly with the Pioneer DEH-P4000UB. XM information is controlled and displayed in the Pioneer DEH-P4000UB. Really nice system. Crutchfield installation adapters and instructions are very good. I was very happy with the knowledgeable sales person who answered all of my questions and made good recommendations based on my requirements. I was also impressed with the knowledge of the customer service person who answered my questions about installation. This unit works great with my aftermarket radio (DEH-4000UB). It was easy to hook up. Only problem was I had to mount it under the rear bench seat in the middle. The mounting hardware only has short screws that only go into the matting, not the metal floor.

So far it has worked great, and I'm glad I put it in my truck.

Exactly what you order

Written By Chris, Livermore, CA on Tuesday, October 28, 2008

I ordered this XM reciever to go with my Pioneer DEH-P7000BT CD Receiver. It arrived quickly and in great shape. Installation was pretty much plug-and-play and simple. I didn't take the time to screw down the unit under my passenger seat. It rests there well enough. I have a 2003 F-150 and guiding the wire from under the passanger dash to the back of the reciever unit was a bit tricky, the fuse box is a little big to be guiding behind airbag box. I got it through and the XM has worked beautifully since then. Much better than the unit I had before. For the price was kind of a bullet that had to be bitten, but free shipping from Crutchfield made it more tolorable. 4/5

XM Satellite Radio

I travel a lot with my job and constantly finding and tuning in new radio stations get to be a real pain. I rented a few cars with XM and liked it pretty good. So I took The plunge.
This unit could not have been easier to install and it works fine.
I would suggest doing research as to choosing XM or Sirius. This might influence the head unit you buy.
There's a lot of good music on XM and if you like sports you'll get plenty of that, but one satellite or the other may suit you better.

Pioneer GEX-P920XM

Written By Michael, Roseville, MI on Tuesday, June 24, 2008

I recently installed this in conjunction with a newly purchased Pioneer
receiver. Being the *true* integrated solution for the receiver, there really
is no other choice in my mind.

I am a bit disappointed in the reception of this unit. With my previous
receiver, I was getting XM through a universal add-on tuner. With the XM
antenna in the same location, the P920XM was frequently losing signal and
giving spotty reception. Even after moving the antenna around, the
reception is nowhere near that offered by the cheap (I actually believe it
was free with my XM subscription) add-on XM tuner.

easy installation, XM unit works perfectly and also lets you connect an IPod
adapter or CD changer through this unit. Cruchfield advisor's
recommendation was right on, thanks!

Great Unit

Written By Anonymous, Merrimack, NH on Saturday, May 31, 2008
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Integrates well with
my Pio 8000BT. This
puppy can receive XM
in the garage with
the door closed. My
Altima can't even
get a signal with
the door open!

The integrated wire
has power and sound
so you do not have
to run more than one
wire except to the
ground (seat
mounting bold) and
antenna. The
antenna wire just
barely made it from
the back of the van
to the driver seat.

Cons: You have to
mount this
somewhere. Although
small, I could not
find a place to
mount it behind the
dash on my 2001
Honda Odyssey so it
is under the driver
seat along with my
sub. I don't have it
secured yet, but it
has not moved, so I
kind of forgot about
it.

Just like my last xm unit this one works great. Having my vehicle stolen, this unit went in the new vehicle, and works just as good as the last one. No choppiness or black out spots, just pure crystal clear sound from any channel, anywhere, even in canyons and the complete middle of nowhere. Even parking garages! Awesome unit, and crutchfield always sends everything I need. Will definitely keep buying from here!

Instructions were easy to follow. The only difficult parts were snaking the wires through the dashboard and figuring out where to splice the XM tuner's power cable into the head unit's power cable. Other than that it was very straight forward and works great.

Pioneer GEX-P920XM

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installation was easy and the unit works as advertised. My only complaint is that this unit apparently only supports the 16-character XM mode. Hard to believe that a new receiver such as this can't decode the full artist/title supplied by XM.

Other than this limitation, it works fine.

Seamless installation. Works great. Only issue was choppyness when I was at the drive thru at the local Wendy's. Works great with my Pioneer DEH6900UB. I HIGHLY recommend this product. So worth it.

This is the first Satellite radio system that I have used. I installed it myself with no problem. I have a Pioneer DEH-P4900IB head unit. It interfaced with no trouble. The installation was quick and easy. All the cables are more than long enough. I installed the unit under the back seat in my 96 Jeep Cherokee. I would tell any one that is looking to get satellite radio to buy this unit.

Pioneer GEX-P920XM vs Roadie XT

Written By Robert, Manteca, CA on Monday, August 06, 2007

I was using a Delphi Roadie XT with my Pioneer DEH3900MP head unit. The sound was always grainy with static. Once i installed the GEX-P920XM wow what a difference. Crystal clear XM! The install in my 2005 Mustang was not difficult. I mounted the tuner box to the rear of the back seat in case i ever needed to reset the unit. All i would need to do is flip down the rear seat. The wires are more than long enough to reach my head unit with 2 feet of ip bus cable to spare and they are color coded to my pioneer head unit. Crystal clear sound with 18 pre sets on the head unit. What more can i say.

Great Product

Written By Cobalt, Miami, FL on Tuesday, April 24, 2007

I previously had a XM SKYFI2 radio installed in my car, but wanted something easier to manage. I had just installed some woodgrain in my car, and I could no longer keep the unit attached where it was anchored, so it would flail all over the place as I drove.

After reading the reviews on the Pioneer DEH P3900MP, I decided to go with this unit.

I could not have made a better, wiser decision!

The box handles the XM info seemlessly. The reception is far better than what I had before and the sound is incredible. I now have the added luxury of being able to control everything, iPod, satellite, etc from one unit and remote.

Trust me, you should go out and get this unit. Here in Miami, I would often run into interference, as the signal does not travel well down here, especially if you travel down into Homestead. Maybe it's a lack of repeaters, or perhaps it was the SkyFi2 itself, but whatever the reason, I no longer have this issue.

The only regrets I have is the inability to scroll down, see what is playing on all the channels, and then make my selection. Big deal. The other issue is the inability to record. I liked being able to record the station, then replay the broadcast while I drove.

This is a great product, why pass when you can purchase it through a great company like Crutchfield?

Take advantage of the price.

Excellent product, and provides all that is promised. The unit is small and easy to hide under a seat and so easy to install. One word of advise though, make sure you connect to a constant power source. I had to go online and reset the radio a couple of times till I figured out I'd connected the radio to the acc/on supply. Had I read the instructions more slowly, I would have picked up on my error.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've been an XM subscriber for a few years now. Started out with the "plug-n-play" Roady 2, but the audio out on it recently failed. I have a Pioneer DEH-4800MP head unit installed in my car, so I figured I'd replace the Roady 2 with the Pioneer XM box.

I couldn't be happier with it. Easy install if you've got a wire crimper and a drill lying around. Great sound, very good controls, and no compatibility issues with the DEH-4800MP whatsoever. I much prefer the integrated solution to the plug-n-play. I can't speak for the other XM plug-n-plays, but to me the Pioneer head unit controls are more intuitive and easier to differentiate than the Roady 2's, and I like that I no longer have the big gray box on my dash. The one thing I miss from my old receiver is the "Tuneselect" feature, which would alert me when selected songs were playing on a channel. It would be nice to see that feature on Pioneer's integrated XM receivers, but the pluses of the Pioneer unit far outweigh the loss of that feature.

Great Product

This is a great unit, very easy to install, small and easy to hide. I have a Pioneer DEH6700MP, and they work great together. Displays Channel name, artist, song title, and genre. Another great product by Pioneer. I am a die hard pioneer fan and they haven't let me down yet.

One piece of advice: There is a power source wire in the harness behind the Head Unit. I have heard people say in their reviews that you can use your remote wire for this. The tuner DOES work, but you can't save your preset stations. The directions DO say to use a constant power source, and they're right.

Excellent Add-On with one drawback

Written By budf15, Montgomery, AL on Saturday, December 02, 2006
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I added this module to a Pioneer DEH-9800BT and overall Im extremely happy with the setup.

PROS: This unit seamlessly integrates XM radio, and on my head unit it has a nice 2 line text display. It will show either channel name and artist, channel name and song title, or just channel name. However, it will NOT display both artist and song title at the same time, at least on my 9800BT. It's easy to cycle back and forth between the other displays though. Sound quality is far superior to the standalone Roady2 I had been using previously.

CONS: Not much to report here but Ive only been using it for a couple weeks. Main Gripe is what brings this down to a 4 star rating although it's fairly common for these integrated solutions. When listening to a specific channel, you can't cycle around to see what is on other channels while leaving the current song playing. You have to change channel by channel, song by song to surf around.

Very good quality

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am using this in conjunction with the Pioneer Avic Z1 head unit. The sound quality of this XM add-on is very good. I had a Nissan factory installed XM unit in my '05 Altima with the factory Bose stereo which I really liked, but the XM quality was not very good. To the point that I questioned keeping XM.
Now, in my '06 Nissan Titan with this P20XM and the Pioneer head unit, I can say there is a definate sound difference.
When I switch to the XM controls with the Z1, the station logos appear with the artist and song names. Then, I have the ability to add that song and artist to a favorites list which will notify me if those on my list are playing on other XM channels so I can switch to that channel and listen to my favorite songs! Great feature.
I recommend this XM add-on without hesitation.
