Dolby Atmos adds a new dimension to home theater

Dolby's latest surround sound technology was designed to bring a new level of immersion to your home theater. By employing in-ceiling speakers or special Dolby-enabled upward-firing speakers that reflect sound off your ceiling, Dolby Atmos offers a greater sense of space for sound that's more three-dimensional. Already at work in film production studios and many movie theaters, Dolby Atmos represents a huge step in putting more "theater" into your home theater. Firmware update required.

The Elite SC-87 lets you add as many as four overhead or Dolby enabled speakers (sometimes called "height" or "top" speakers) to a conventional five-channel system — this is referred to as a 5.1.4 Dolby Atmos setup. Here's a breakdown of all the Dolby Atmos speaker configurations this receiver supports:

  • 7.1.2 - seven conventional surround speakers, one powered subwoofer, and two overhead or height speakers
  • 5.1.4 - five conventional surround speakers, one powered subwoofer, and four overhead or height speakers
  • 5.1.2 - five conventional surround speakers, one powered subwoofer, and two overhead or height speakers

You can use one or two subwoofers with any of these configurations.

Wireless music options from computers and smartphones

I'm always looking for more ways to enjoy more music from more sources. When you connect the SC-87 to your home network, you'll open the floodgates to a vast musical library for endless exploring. There's built-in support for Pandora® and vTuner Internet radio, for free online music and radio streams from around the world. If you're a Spotify® subscriber, you can play their huge library of tunes wirelessly using your Apple® or Android™ device. Speaking of Apple, the SC-87 has AirPlay, so you can stream tunes from your iPhone®, iPad®, iPod touch®, or a computer using iTunes®. There's also DLNA support for streaming music from networked PCs and music servers, as well as wired options for MHL-compatible Android smartphones and tablets. AirPlay requires a wireless home network and a wired connection between the receiver and network.

Sweet sound for movies and music

How good does the Elite SC-87 sound? Good enough to earn certification from world-renowned AIR Studios in London — a truly impressive distinction. Why does the SC-87 sound so great? First, it uses audiophile-quality ESS SABRE digital-to-analog converters, which bring more detail out of digital music and movie soundtracks from sources like Blu-ray players and music servers. Digital music files like MP3s and FLACs are up-sampled to higher resolutions, adding depth and spaciousness to all your favorite tunes. Movie and TV sound benefits from Pioneer's Class D3 amplification, which does an excellent job of maintaining this receiver's impressive power output even when driving a multichannel speaker system. That means you'll get punchy, dynamic surround sound for movies and TV.

Multi-room audio and video options

Most of us want music and video in more rooms than just the home theater. You can use the Elite SC-87 to send music to as many as four rooms at once. A second HDMI output offers music in a fourth zone, or video in a second room. Let the kids watch a movie in the playroom while you watch the game in the home theater. This receiver can also power speakers in a second and third room — perfect for a bedroom, kitchen, or porch — while allowing simultaneous 5.2-channel surround sound in the main room. There's even a preamp output for adding a subwoofer to Zone 2, so you can get plenty of bass along with your bookshelf speakers.

Pioneer helps you get connected

Worried about making all the necessary connections to this receiver? Pioneer makes it easy with their AVNavigator. You can use your computer, smartphone, or tablet to follow step-by-step instructions for making connections and tweaking settings. For Apple® and Android™ devices, you'll need to download the free iControlAV5 app. Not only does it give you access to AVNavigator, but it also lets you use your device as a Wi-Fi® remote once you're ready to start enjoying music and movies with this receiver. AVNavigator requires that the receiver be connected to the same home network as the computer, smartphone, or tablet used to run it.

Class D3 Amplification: The Pioneer Elite SC-87 AV receiver is equipped with a discrete 9-channel Elite Class D3 amplifier rated at 140 watts (into 8-ohms, at 1kHz, with 0.08% THD, driving 2 channels). While lesser amplifiers' output diminishes as channels are added, the SC-87's Class D3 amps have the power to drive multiple channels simultaneously with no significant drop in per-channel output, recreating the full impact and dynamic range of high-resolution multi-channel audio. With a direct signal path and no EMI filters, feedback loops or current limiting, these amps are true engineering art, and unlike traditional designs, Pioneer Class D3 amps have the durability to handle multiple low-impedance speaker loads where other receivers lose power dramatically. Class D3 amplifiers also run cooler than conventional Class AB designs, using just a fraction of the energy while delivering more power with all channels driven.

Amplifier Assignment: The SC-87's nine discrete amplifier channels can be configured to accommodate your type of home theater setup.

    • 7.2.2 or 5.2.4 Dolby Atmos (Firmware Update Required): Assign all nine amplifiers of the receivers for playback in the main zone for Dolby Atmos 7.2.2 or 5.2.4 surround sound.
    • 7.2Ch + Zone 2: Assign the nine amplifiers for 7.2ch playback in the main zone and 2ch stereo playback of a different source in Zone 2.
    • 7.2ch Speaker B: Assign the nine amplifiers for 7.2ch playback in the main room and 2ch stereo playback of the same source in another room.
    • 5.2ch Bi-Amp + Zone 2: Assign the nine amplifiers for 5.2ch playback in the main zone with the front speakers bi-amped, and 2ch stereo playback of a different source in Zone 2.
    • 5.2ch + Zone 2 & Zone 3: Assign the nine amplifiers for 5.2ch playback in the main zone and 2ch stereo playback of different sources in Zone 2 and Zone 3.
    • 5.2ch + Speaker B Bi-Amped: Assign the nine amplifiers for 5.2ch playback in the main zone and 2ch stereo playback of same source in another room with speaker B bi-amped.
    • 5.2ch Center & Surround Bi-Amped: Assign 5.2ch playback in the main zone with the Front and Surround speakers bi-amped, the Front and Center speaker bi-amped, or the Center and Surround speakers bi-amped.

3D Space Frame Construction: This AV receiver comes with Advanced 3D Space Frame structure, featuring precise framework design, separating the power supply block, and isolating the analog video/audio and digital functional blocks into specific compartments. This
reduces interference by flat cables between the blocks and improves the operating characteristics to accurately reproduce even the most delicate signals.

Sabre32 Ultra DACs + TI Aureus DSP Engine:: All channels of the Elite SC-87 employ ESS-DAC SABRE32 technology, the world's highest performance 32-bit audio DAC solution, delivering spectacular sound with a minimum of harmonic distortion. The SC-82 AV receiver is also equipped with a Texas Instruments (TI) Aureus Digital Signal Processor (DSP) Engine for better surround sound reproduction.

PQLS Jitter Reduction: PQLS (Precision Quartz Lock System) is a digital audio signal transfer control technology using the HDMI Control function. It offers  higher-quality audio playback by controlling audio signals from the receiver to a PQLS compatible Pioneer Blu-ray player. This enables removing jitter that has a negative effect on the quality of the sound and is generated upon transmission.

AIR Studios Monitor Certifications: The Elite SC-87 has been certified at London's legendary AIR Studios, whose work is respected worldwide for award-winning motion picture soundtracks and peerless digital CD recordings. AIR Studios understands the artist's craft, and like Pioneer, believes that faithfully reproducing what the artist originally created in the studio is the critical objective of the finest home theater system.

Multi-Channel Decoding Formats: The Pioneer Elite SC-87 AV receiver supports the following multi-channel (Dolby Digital, DTS, Dolby Pro Logic) decoding formats.

Note: Dolby Digital and DTS listening modes can only be selected if your audio source is connected to the A/V receiver via a digital audio connection (HDMI, optical, or coaxial). To enjoy true 7.1ch Dolby Digital TrueHD and DTS-HD surround sound, the receiver must be connected to your Blu-ray player via HDMI.

Dolby Atmos Upgradeable (via Firmware Update): The Pioneer SC-87 AV receiver is upgradeable for Dolby Atmos via a firmware update. Dolby Atmos is one of the most significant home entertainment introductions since the launch of surround sound. Dolby Atmos adds height to the sonic landscape, creating a true 3D, multi-dimensional space that puts listeners inside the experience. Played through Atmos-enabled speakers like the new Elite Home Theater Speaker System or dedicated ceiling-mounted speakers (all sold separately), theatrical releases created in Dolby Atmos simply come alive. Dolby Atmos brings new life to traditional soundtracks, putting sounds into motion and delivering the full impact of the artist's work like never before. To enjoy Dolby Atmos, users must have Blu-ray Disc content encoded for Dolby Atmos, Dolby Atmos-enabled receiver, and new Dolby Atmos-enabled speakers, add-on modules, or at least two overhead speakers.

    • Ceiling Mounted Speakers: Ceiling speakers are used for maximizing effects in Dolby Atmos listening mode. Install these speakers midway between the position just above the listening position and the position just above the front speakers, or simply install them just above the listening position.
    • Dolby Enabled Speakers: There are two types of Dolby Enabled Speakers; one is to be placed on the top board of other
speakers such as front speakers and surround speakers; the other is integrated within the front or surround speakers. Dolby Enabled Speakers are designed with their output facing toward the ceiling to create an elevated audio effect in the Dolby Atmos mode by providing sounds echoing off the ceiling.
Note: Globally, more than 100 cinema blockbusters have been released featuring Dolby Atmos soundtracks in the past two years, and many more are on the way. Major Hollywood studios are partnering with Dolby to create home video versions of both current box office releases and previously released favorites for release starting in 2014

Dolby Surround: Dolby Surround offers an enhanced cinema experience to your Dolby Digital (Plus/TrueHD) and DTS (ES/HD) movie soundtracks using your existing 7.1ch or Dolby Atmos speaker setup. Dolby Surround enhances audio definition by improving the spatial dimension and overall audio definition of movie soundtracks. It does this by using four distinct surround zones that provide greater control over the exact placement of each detail in a movie sound track, so audio can be matched more accurately to the video on screen; this means more depth and greater realism for your movies. As a result, individual sounds are clearer and more distinct. It also improves the surround sound experience across the entire theater by widening the listening "sweet spot".

MCACC Pro Room Calibration: MCACC (Multi-Channel Acoustic Calibration) is taken to a new level of performance with MCACC Pro. Designed by Pioneer for the Atmos-enabled Elite system, MCACC Pro calibrates sound output using a microphone to monitor the sound environment and an equalizer to optimize and precision-tune each speaker to the room. Pioneer engineers have even included dual independent subwoofer output tuning, each with individual EQ. Tailoring left- and right-channel low frequency response curves lets you achieve optimum subwoofer performance based on specific room placement, creating powerful bass response and seamless integration with your main speaker system. With the push of a button, it's like having a professional acoustical engineer fine-tune your home theater system.

    • Multi-Channel Acoustic Calibration (MCACC): The SC-87 features Pioneer's exclusive Multi-Channel Acoustic Calibration system (MCACC), providing an optimized multi-channel listening experience by measuring every speaker's connection, noting its size and distance from the listening point, sound levels and timbre in order to calibrate, customize and maximize performance specifically for your room. An auto-calibration microphone is included.
      • 3 Correction Curves: After a single calibration is performed, each of the following three correction curves can be stored separately in the MCACC memory. SYMMETRY implements symmetric correction for each pair of left and right speakers to flatten the frequency-amplitude characteristics. ALL CH ADJ is a 'flat' setting where all the speakers are set individually so no special weighting is given to any one channel. FRONT ALIGN sets all speakers in accordance with the front speaker settings (no equalization is applied to the front left and right channels.
      • EQ Pro & S-Wave: In addition to measurements at the listening position, you can use two more reference points for which test tones will be analyzed for standing waves. This is useful if you want to get a balanced 'flat' calibration for several seating positions in your listening area. Place the microphone at the reference point indicated on-screen and note that the last microphone placement will be at your main listening position.
      • Discrete Subwoofer EQ: The dual discrete subwoofer EQ determines the distance and characteristics of both of your subwoofers, and makes adjustments using four different frequency parameters and an extremely low-latency DSP to reduce phase and timing errors that are often found in other room calibration systems.
      • Full Band Phase Control: The AV receiver's Full Band Phase Control feature uses phase correction measurements to make sure your system's sound arrives at the listening position in phase, preventing unwanted distortion and/or coloring of the sound. Full Band Phase Control technology takes into account each speaker's high-, mid-, and low-frequency ranges respectively. As a results, the AV receiver provides coherent sound reproduction through the use of phase matching for an optimal sound image at your listening position.
    • Manual MCACC Setup: You can use the settings in the Manual MCACC setup menu to make detailed adjustments, after the Auto MCACC Setup has completed.
      • Fine Channel Level: You can achieve better surround sound by properly adjusting the overall balance of your speaker system. You can adjust the Channel Level of each speaker in 0.5 dB increments (+/-12dB).
      • Standing Wave: Acoustic standing waves occur when, under certain conditions, sound waves from your speaker system resonate mutually with sound waves reflected off the walls in your listening area. This can have a negative effect on the overall sound, especially at certain lower frequencies. Depending on speaker placement, your listening position, and ultimately the shape of your room, it results in an overly resonant (boomy) sound. The Standing Wave Control uses filters to reduce the effect of overly resonant sounds in your listening area.
      • EQ Adjust: Acoustic Calibration Equalization is a kind of room equalizer for your speakers (excluding the subwoofer). It works by measuring the acoustic characteristics of your room and neutralizing the ambient characteristics that can color the original source material (providing a 'flat' equalization setting).
      • EQ Professional: This setup minimizes the unwanted effects of room reverberation by allowing you to calibrate your system based on the direct sound coming from the speakers. Performing the Acoustic Calibration EQ Professional procedure is effective when the lower frequencies seem overly reverberant in  your listening room.

Stream Direct Modes: You can use the receiver's two Direct Modes when you want to hear the truest possible reproduction of a source; all unnecessary signal processing is bypassed.

    • Direct: Sources are heard according to the settings made in the Manual Speaker Setup (speaker setting, channel level, speaker distance), as well as with dual mono settings. You will hear sources according to the number of channel in the signal.
    • Pure Direct: Analog and PCM sources are heard without and digital processing.

Advanced Surround Modes: The Advance Surround Modes create a variety of surround effects. You can choose from Action, Drama, Advanced Game, Sports, Classical, Rock/Pop, Front Stage Surround, Extended Stereo, or Headphone Surround.

    • Front Stage Surround: Allows you to create a virtual surround effect using only front speakers and a powered subwoofer.
    • Extended Stereo: Allows you to listen to multi-channel stereo through all 7.1 speakers.
    • Headphone Surround: When listening through headphones, you can still get a virtual surround sound effect.

Audio Enhancements: The Pioneer Elite SC-87 offers several audio enhancement settings to improve your listening experience.

    • Optimum Surround: In the Optimum Surround mode, this receiver automatically optimizes dialog, bass, and surround sound in each scene based on the set volume.
    • Advanced Sound Retriever: Even compressed audio such as WMA, MP3, and AAC is enhanced with another Pioneer exclusive, Advanced Sound Retriever, by filling in areas where subtle details were left out during the compression process. When audio data is removed during the compression process, sound quality often suffers from an uneven sound image. The Sound Retriever feature employs new DSP technology that helps bring CD quality sound back to compressed 2-channel audio by restoring sound pressure and smoothing jagged artifacts left over after compression.
    • Hi-Bit 32 + Upsampling: This feature creates a wider dynamic range with digital sources; like CDs, DVDs, or BDs. Smoother, more delicate musical expression can be achieved by converting 16-bit PCM or 20-bit compressed audio signals to 32-bit, while also upsampling the audio source's sampling frequency.
    • X-Curve: Most soundtracks mixed for cinema sound too bright when played back in large rooms. The X-Curve setting acts as a kind of re-equalization for home theater listening, and restores proper tonal balance of movie soundtracks.
    • Dialogue Enhancement: Localizes dialog in the center channel to make it stand out from other background sounds in a TV or movie soundtrack. By moving from UP1 through UP2 and UP3 up to UP4, you can make the sound source seem to relocate upwards.
    • Up Mix Function: In a 7.1ch surround system wi h surround speakers place directly at the side of the listening position, the surround sound of 5.1ch sources is heard from the side. The Up Mix function mixes the sound of the surround speaker with the surround back speakers so that the surround sound is hear from diagonally to the rear as it should be.

Surround Parameters: You can adjust the following surround mode parameters.

    • Dolby Pro Logic II Music Settings: While listening in the Dolby Pro Logic II/x Music format, there are three further enhancements you can adjust - Panorama (broadens the front stereo image to the surround speakers to provide a wraparound effect, especially effective when there is limited output from the surround channels), Dimension (allows you to move the soundfield forward or backward), and Center Width (allows you to adjust the width of the center channel).
    • Center Image: In the Neo:6 Music mode, the Center Image feature adjusts the output of the left and right channels relative to the center channel, allowing you to make the center channel more or less dominant as needed. This improves the image of the center channel, especially when the listener is off-center.
