Take your home theater above and beyond with Dolby Atmos and DTS:X™

A technology that just made its debut in home theater receivers last year, Dolby Atmos creates the most lifelike, captivating surround sound of any audio format we've heard to date. If you're watching a plane take off onscreen, your ears will follow it down the runway along with your eyes, and as it roars directly overhead you might swear your hair is blowing back. If you're ready to explore this new dimension in home theater sound, you'll just need to add one or two pairs of in-ceiling speakers to your five- or seven-channel system, or pick up some Atmos enabled upward-firing speakers to project sound off your ceiling and create the height effects that make an Atmos system so riveting.

Here's a breakdown of all the Dolby Atmos speaker configurations this receiver supports:

  • 7.1.2 - seven conventional surround speakers, one powered subwoofer, and two overhead or height speakers
  • 5.1.4 - five conventional surround speakers, one powered subwoofer, and four overhead or height speakers
  • 5.1.2 - five conventional surround speakers, one powered subwoofer, and two overhead or height speakers
  • 7.1.4 - seven conventional surround speakers, one powered subwoofer, and four overhead or height speakers (requires an external stereo power amp)
  • 9.1.2 - nine conventional surround speakers, one powered subwoofer, and two overhead or height speakers (requires an external stereo power amp)

You can use one or two subwoofers with any of these configurations.

Pioneer will release a firmware update that will give this receiver DTS:X surround sound, an upcoming format which will use object-based processing similar to Dolby Atmos and overhead speakers for immersive home theater.

Connections you can put to good use

The SC-99 has outputs for 11 speakers and can power up to 9 speakers at once, so you can customize your system to suit your needs. If you're waiting for more Atmos and DTS:X content before setting up height speakers, the receiver's height channels can be used to send audio to a pair of speakers in another room. If you're happy with 5.2-channel surround sound in your living room, you can use the extra speaker outputs to power two pairs of speakers in two different rooms. Or, if you don't have designs on extending your system beyond your living room, you can get killer sound from a 5.2-channel setup by bi-amping your front and surround speakers.

Two additional HDMI outputs add to the SC-99's multi-room flexibility. HDMI Out 2 can send the same video content from the main HDMI output to a projector in the same room, or to a TV in a different room. HDMI Out 3 can send separate video content to a screen in a different room. Don't want the kids distracting you while you catch up on your Netflix shows? Pop in a Blu-ray for them to watch in the playroom while you enjoy your favorite shows in the living room.

Class D3 Amplification: The Pioneer Elite SC-99 AV receiver is equipped with a discrete 9-channel Elite Class D3 amplifier rated at 140 watts (into 8-ohms, at 1kHz, with 0.08% THD, driving 2 channels). The Elite Class D3 amplifier is 4-ohm certified, so it safely powers low-impedance speakers that many other receivers aren't made to handle. Thanks to its Elite Class D3 amplification, the SC-99 reproduces your music and soundtracks with uncompromising authority and realism, exploiting the full dynamics from any media source. Class D3 amplifiers also run cooler than conventional Class AB designs, using just a fraction of the energy while delivering more power with all channels driven.

Amplifier Assignment: The SC-99's nine discrete amplifier channels can be configured to accommodate your type of home theater setup.

    • 9.1.2ch (Dolby Atmos): A 9.1.2ch  surround system can be configured in the main zone by assigning the receiver's nine amplifiers to power Front, Center, Top Middle, Surround, and Surround Back speakers; while two of the receiver's pre-outs send audio to an external amplifier for the Front Height/Wide speakers.
    • 7.1ch: A 7.1ch surround system can be configured in the main zone with Front, Center, Surround. and Surround Back speakers.
      • Dolby Atmos (7.1.2ch or 7.1.4ch): You can assign the receiver's amplifier to power two more speakers (Top Middle) to create a 7.1.2ch Dolby Atmos surround system in your main zone. You can even add Front Height/Wide speaker's using the receiver's pre-outs and an external amplifier for 7.1.4ch Dolby Atmos surround.
      • Zone 2: In addition to 7.1ch playback in the main zone, you can assign the receiver's amplifier to power a pair of speakers in a second zone (Zone 2).
      • Front Bi-Amp: During 7.1ch playback in the main zone, you can assign the receiver's amplifier to Bi-amp the Front speakers for improved bass & treble performance.
      • Speaker B: In addition to 7.1ch playback in the main zone, you can assign the receiver's amplifier to power a pair of "B" speakers.
    • 5.1ch: A 5.1ch surround system can be configured in the main zone with Front, Center, and Surround speakers.
      • Dolby Atmos (5.1.2ch): You can assign the receiver's amplifier to power one more pair of speakers (Top Middle) to create a 5.1.2ch Dolby Atmos surround system in your main zone.
      • Zone 2 & Zone 3: In addition to 5.1ch playback in the main zone, you can assign the receiver's amplifier to power a pair of speakers in Zone 2 and Zone 3.
      • Bi-Amp: During 5.1ch playback in the main zone, you can assign the receiver's amplifier to Bi-amp the Front & Center speakers, the Front & Rear speakers, or the Center & Rear speakers for improved bass & treble performance. Or, you can choose to Bi-amp a pair of "B" speakers.

High Quality Construction: The Pioneer Elite SC-99's extremely rigid chassis and low-leakage flux power transformer aids in its high-quality sound with little distortion.

    • 3D Space Frame: This AV receiver comes with Advanced 3D Space Frame structure, featuring precise framework design, separating the power supply block, and isolating the analog video/audio and digital functional blocks into specific compartments. This reduces interference by flat cables between the blocks and improves the operating characteristics to accurately reproduce even the most delicate signals.
    • Low-Leakage Flux Power Transformer: The receiver's power transformer features minimum leakage flux, ensuring low noise with increased S/N ratio.

AIR Studios Monitor Certifications: The Elite SC-99 has been certified at London's legendary AIR Studios, whose work is respected worldwide for award-winning motion picture soundtracks and peerless digital CD recordings. AIR Studios understands the artist's craft, and like Pioneer, believes that faithfully reproducing what the artist originally created in the studio is the critical objective of the finest home theater system.

Sabre32 Ultra DACs + TI Aureus DSP Engine:: All channels of the Elite SC-99 employ ESS-DAC SABRE32 technology, the world's highest performance 32-bit audio DAC solution, delivering spectacular sound with a minimum of harmonic distortion. The SC-99 AV receiver is also equipped with a Texas Instruments (TI) Aureus Digital Signal Processor (DSP) Engine for better surround sound reproduction.

PQLS Jitter Reduction: PQLS (Precision Quartz Lock System) is a digital audio signal transfer control technology using the HDMI Control function. It offers  higher-quality audio playback by controlling audio signals from the receiver to a PQLS compatible Pioneer Blu-ray player. This enables removing jitter that has a negative effect on the quality of the sound and is generated upon transmission.

Multi-Channel Decoding Formats: The Pioneer Elite SC-99 AV receiver supports the following multi-channel (Dolby Digital, DTS, Dolby Pro Logic) decoding formats.

Note: Dolby Digital and DTS listening modes can only be selected if your audio source is connected to the A/V receiver via a digital audio connection (HDMI, optical, or coaxial). To enjoy true 7.1ch Dolby Digital TrueHD and DTS-HD surround sound, the receiver must be connected to your Blu-ray player via HDMI.

Immersive Surround Sound: The Pioner Elite SC-99 AV receiver goes beyond regular surround with the latest immersive surround sound formats - like Dolby Atmos, Dolby Surround, DTS:X, and DTS Neural:X.

    • Dolby Atmos: With Dolby Atmos, sound comes alive from all directions, including overhead, to fill your home theater with astonishing clarity, power, detail, and depth. The AV receiver has the processing power to run a more enveloping 5.1.2, 7.1.2, 7.1.4, or 9.2.2ch Dolby Atmos layout utilizing ceiling mounted or Dolby Atmos-enabled speakers (sold separately).
      • a 5.1.2 speaker configuration is based upon a traditional 5.1 speaker layout complemented by 2 overhead or Dolby Atmos-enabled speakers.
      • a 7.1.2 configuration is based on a 7.1 speaker layout with 2 overhead, or Dolby Atmos-enabled speakers
      • a 7.1.4 configuration is based on a 7.1 speaker layout with 4 overhead, or Dolby Atmos-enabled speakers (two of the speakers must be powered by an external 2ch amp
      • a 9.1.2 configuration is based on a 9.1 speaker layout with 2 overhead, or Dolby Atmos-enabled speakers (two of the speakers must be powered by an external 2ch amp
    • Dolby Surround: Dolby Surround offers an enhanced cinema experience to your Dolby Digital (Plus/TrueHD) and DTS (ES/HD) movie soundtracks using your existing 7.1ch or Dolby Atmos speaker setup. Dolby Surround enhances audio definition by improving the spatial dimension and overall audio definition of movie soundtracks. It does this by using four distinct surround zones that provide greater control over the exact placement of each detail in a movie sound track, so audio can be matched more accurately to the video on screen; this means more depth and greater realism for your movies. As a result, individual sounds are clearer and more distinct. It also improves the surround sound experience across the entire theater by widening the listening "sweet spot".
    • DTS:X (via future firmware update): DTS:X is the next generation object-based, multi-dimensional audio technology from DTS. Unbound from channels, DTS:X conveys the fluid movement of sound to create an incredibly rich, realistic and immersive soundscape - in front of, behind, beside and above the audience - more accurately than ever before. DTS:X offers the ability to automatically adapt the audio to the speaker layout that best fits your space. DTS:X will be enabled through an online firmware update coming later this year.
    • DTS Neural:X (via future firmware update): Further, DTS:X incorporates Neural:X, the latest spatial remapping technology from DTS, which provides a fully immersive output for all types of source content; this includes DTS bitstreams and non-encoded (PCM) data. Neural:X delivers a thrilling sense of immersive sound to your speaker layout regardless of the original source format. DTS Neural:X will be enabled through an online firmware update coming later this year.

MCACC Pro Room Calibration: MCACC (Multi-Channel Acoustic Calibration) is taken to a new level of performance with MCACC Pro. Designed by Pioneer for Atmos-enabled receivers and speaker systems, MCACC Pro calibrates sound output using a microphone to monitor the sound environment and an equalizer to optimize and precision-tune each speaker to the room. Pioneer engineers have even included dual independent subwoofer output tuning, each with individual EQ. Tailoring left- and right-channel low frequency response curves lets you achieve optimum subwoofer performance based on specific room placement, creating powerful bass response and seamless integration with your main speaker system. With the push of a button, it's like having a professional acoustical engineer fine-tune your home theater system.

    • Multi-Channel Acoustic Calibration (MCACC): The SC-99 features Pioneer's exclusive Multi-Channel Acoustic Calibration system (MCACC), providing an optimized multi-channel listening experience by measuring every speaker's connection, noting its size and distance from the listening point, sound levels and timbre in order to calibrate, customize and maximize performance specifically for your room. An auto-calibration microphone is included.
      • 3 Correction Curves: After a single calibration is performed, each of the following three correction curves can be stored separately in the MCACC memory. SYMMETRY implements symmetric correction for each pair of left and right speakers to flatten the frequency-amplitude characteristics. ALL CH ADJ is a 'flat' setting where all the speakers are set individually so no special weighting is given to any one channel. FRONT ALIGN sets all speakers in accordance with the front speaker settings (no equalization is applied to the front left and right channels.
      • EQ Pro & S-Wave: In addition to measurements at the listening position, you can use two more reference points for which test tones will be analyzed for standing waves. This is useful if you want to get a balanced 'flat' calibration for several seating positions in your listening area. Place the microphone at the reference point indicated on-screen and note that the last microphone placement will be at your main listening position.
      • Discrete Subwoofer EQ: The dual discrete subwoofer EQ determines the distance and characteristics of both of your subwoofers, and makes adjustments using four different frequency parameters and an extremely low-latency DSP to reduce phase and timing errors that are often found in other room calibration systems.
      • Full Band Phase Control: The AV receiver's Full Band Phase Control feature uses phase correction measurements to make sure your system's sound arrives at the listening position in phase, preventing unwanted distortion and/or coloring of the sound. Full Band Phase Control technology takes into account each speaker's high-, mid-, and low-frequency ranges respectively. As a results, the AV receiver provides coherent sound reproduction through the use of phase matching for an optimal sound image at your listening position.
    • Manual MCACC Setup: You can use the settings in the Manual MCACC setup menu to make detailed adjustments, after the Auto MCACC Setup has completed.
      • Fine Channel Level: You can achieve better surround sound by properly adjusting the overall balance of your speaker system. You can adjust the Channel Level of each speaker in 0.5 dB increments (+/-12dB).
      • Precision Speaker Distance: For proper sound depth and separation with your system, it is necessary to add a slight bit of delay to some speakers so that all sounds will arrive at the listening position at the same time. You can adjust the distance of each speaker within a millimeter.
      • Standing Wave: Acoustic standing waves occur when, under certain conditions, sound waves from your speaker system resonate mutually with sound waves reflected off the walls in your listening area. This can have a negative effect on the overall sound, especially at certain lower frequencies. Depending on speaker placement, your listening position, and ultimately the shape of your room, it results in an overly resonant (boomy) sound. The Standing Wave Control uses filters to reduce the effect of overly resonant sounds in your listening area.
      • EQ Adjust: Acoustic Calibration Equalization is a kind of room equalizer for your speakers (excluding the subwoofer). It works by measuring the acoustic characteristics of your room and neutralizing the ambient characteristics that can color the original source material (providing a 'flat' equalization setting).
      • EQ Professional: This setup minimizes the unwanted effects of room reverberation by allowing you to calibrate your system based on the direct sound coming from the speakers. Performing the Acoustic Calibration EQ Professional procedure is effective when the lower frequencies seem overly reverberant in  your listening room.

Stream Direct Modes: You can use the receiver's two Direct Modes when you want to hear the truest possible reproduction of a source; all unnecessary signal processing is bypassed.

    • Direct: Sources are heard according to the settings made in the Manual Speaker Setup (speaker setting, channel level, speaker distance), as well as with dual mono settings. You will hear sources according to the number of channel in the signal.
    • Pure Direct: Analog and PCM sources are heard without and digital processing.

Advanced Surround Modes: The Advance Surround Modes create a variety of surround effects. You can choose from Action, Drama, Advanced Game, Sports, Classical, Rock/Pop, Front Stage Surround, Extended Stereo,  Headphone Surround, or Optimum Surround.

    • Front Stage Surround: Allows you to create a virtual surround effect using only front speakers and a powered subwoofer.
    • Extended Stereo: Allows you to listen to multi-channel stereo through all 7.1 speakers.
    • Headphone Surround: When listening through headphones, you can still get a virtual surround sound effect.
    • Optimum Surround: In the Optimum Surround mode, the receiver automatically optimizes sound balance in each scene based on actual set volume.

Audio Enhancements: The Pioneer Elite SC-99 offers several audio enhancement settings to improve your listening experience.

    • Advanced Sound Retriever: Even compressed audio such as WMA, MP3, and AAC is enhanced with another Pioneer exclusive, Advanced Sound Retriever, by filling in areas where subtle details were left out during the compression process. When audio data is removed during the compression process, sound quality often suffers from an uneven sound image. The Sound Retriever feature employs new DSP technology that helps bring CD quality sound back to compressed 2-channel audio by restoring sound pressure and smoothing jagged artifacts left over after compression.
    • Hi-Bit 32 + Upsampling: This feature creates a wider dynamic range with digital sources; like CDs, DVDs, or BDs. Smoother, more delicate musical expression can be achieved by converting 16-bit PCM or 20-bit compressed audio signals to 32-bit, while also upsampling the audio source's sampling frequency.
    • X-Curve: Most soundtracks mixed for cinema sound too bright when played back in large rooms. The X-Curve setting acts as a kind of re-equalization for home theater listening, and restores proper tonal balance of movie soundtracks.
    • Dialogue Enhancement: Localizes dialog in the center channel to make it stand out from other background sounds in a TV or movie soundtrack. By moving from UP1 through UP2 and UP3 up to UP4, you can make the sound source seem to relocate upwards.
    • Auto Phase Control Plus: The LFE channel can be delayed on some recordings. This function automatically corrects phase shifting on such recordings. This feature is particularly effective when playing multi-channel music containing low frequency effects (LFE).

Surround Parameters: You can adjust the following surround mode parameters.

    • Dolby Pro Logic II Music Settings: While listening in the Dolby Pro Logic II/x Music format, there are three further enhancements you can adjust - Panorama (broadens the front stereo image to the surround speakers to provide a wraparound effect, especially effective when there is limited output from the surround channels), Dimension (allows you to move the soundfield forward or backward), and Center Width (allows you to adjust the width of the center channel).
    • Center Image: In the Neo:6 Music mode, the Center Image feature adjusts the output of the left and right channels relative to the center channel, allowing you to make the center channel more or less dominant as needed. This improves the image of the center channel, especially when the listener is off-center. Adjustment varies from 7 (nothing subtracted from the L/R channels) to 0 (L/R channel output is cut in half).
    • Virtual Settings: Choose between 4 Virtual Speaker Modes - V.Height (when you're not using front height speakers, selecting this mode allows you to hear a virtual front height channel through your front speakers), V.Wide (when you're not using front wide speakers, selecting this mode allows you to hear a virtual front wide channel through your front speakers), V.Depth (when this mode is selected, the soundfield expands virtually behind the display, resulting a soundfield with the same depth as the 3D picture to achieve a better sense of presence), or V.SB (when you're not using surround back speakers, selecting this mode allows you to hear a virtual surround back channel through your surround speaker)

Audio Level Controls: The Pioneer Elite SC-99 offers a variety of audio level controls to tailor your audio.

    • Input Volume Absorber: This feature is used to correct and balance out the differences in volume between different input sources.
    • Auto Level Control: Low and high frequency sounds, dialog, surround effects, etc. which are difficult to hear when the volume is low are automatically optimized for better intelligibility; great for watching movies late at night.
    • Dynamic Range Control: This function adjusts the level of dynamic range for movie soundtracks optimized for Dolby Digital/DTS formats. This feature is helpful when listening to Dolby Digital/DTS soundtracks at low volume levels.
    • LFE Attenuate: Dolby Digital and DTS audio sources can include ultra-low bass tones. Set the LFE Attenuator as necessary to prevent the ultra low bass tones from distorting the sound from the speakers. The LFE attenuator can be set to 0, -5, -10, -15, or -20 dB.

You still have two amp channels left for two ATMOS channels (a 7.2.2 setup). See page 22 of the manuals for pictures.

    Q
Will the SC-99 receiver output hdmi audio to all zones? E.g. No analog audio, but still listen to Dolby digital in the main room and stereo on the patio.

    A
A source that comes in on HDMI can only go out to other zones via the "Zone 2 HDMI" output. You will not be able to send stereo sound to your patio using the powered outputs or RCA preamp outputs on this receiver.
