Our take on the Pioneer SPH-DA110 AppRadio 3

by John Pollard
Pioneer

Why replace your factory radio?

Two good reasons - sound quality and cool features. A new car stereo offers power that's superior to most factory radios, along with more sophisticated tone controls. And most car stereos offer built-in or optional features that add safety and fun to life in your car, including inputs for your iPod or MP3 player, Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free cell phone calls, satellite radio or HD Radio reception, and connections for building an audio system in your car.

Enjoy your smartphone apps on the big screen

Face it, you can't live without your smartphone and the apps that help make your life easier. Pioneer's AppRadio 3 receiver lets you view those apps on its big 7” screen so it's easier to control them while you're on the road. You'll check out your favorite apps on a simplified menu that's designed for mobile use, so you can keep your eyes on the road instead of fumbling around with your phone.

The AppRadio 3 works with iPhone® 4, 4S, and 5, as well as select Android™ models, so you can enjoy compatibility regardless of what platform you're into. In order to enable all of these cool features offered by this Pioneer, you'll need to make sure that your smartphone's compatible with the AppRadio 3, and then pick out the right connection kit for your smartphone (sold separately).

Control your apps from the large 7" touchscreen.

Navigation, music streaming, and web browsing

AppRadio 3 has you covered by supporting some of the most popular apps available. You'll find plenty of apps to enjoy right now, including MotionX GPS Drive™, INRIX® traffic, AUPEO! Personal Radio, Pandora® Internet radio, and Pioneer's MIXTRAX, with more coming down the road. You'll have the advantage of a sleek app interface, and the apps will look great on the 7" capacitive touchscreen, which recognizes all zoom, swipe, and pinch gestures just like if you were using your smartphone.

Siri® Eyes Free

If you have an iPhone 4S or 5, you'll hear Siri's voice prompts through your vehicle's sound system, and you can make commands or ask questions through the microphone that's included with this receiver. You can set reminders, ask for songs, request directions, or anything else you'd normally do with your iPhone.

Works with Android™ phones and features MirrorLink™ connectivity

The AppRadio 3 doesn't leave Android by the wayside when it comes to features, either. Not only will its App Mode support many Android phones, but this receiver takes it to the next level with MirrorLink support.  MirrorLink allows certain Nokia and Samsung smartphones (with more to come in the future) to display their interface on the AppRadio 3, so you can make phone calls, access map services, or check out music with ease. If you don't have a MirrorLink phone, you can still download a free Pioneer app that enables voice commands with your Android phone.

Talk hands-free and stream audio wirelessly with Bluetooth®

Built-in Bluetooth adds to the versatility of this cool receiver — pair your phone, and you'll be able to talk hands-free and access your phone book from the touchscreen. You can even stream audio from your smartphone to the receiver.

Bluetooth note: Use of this receiver's Bluetooth features will depend upon your phone's Bluetooth capabilities. Learn more in our article explaining Bluetooth profiles.

iPod/smartphone note: If you're going to use your iPod or smartphone with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for compatibility information.

Complement your setup with a phone mount

The AppRadio 3 requires input from your iPhone from time to time — most notably when running the MotionX GPS Drive app. It's a good idea to mount your iPhone where it's easy to reach. Check out our selection of Pro.Fit mounts.

This smartphone receiver will not play CDs. If you want to play discs in your vehicle, Pioneer's SPH-DA210 AppRadio 3 receiver will play CDs and DVDs.

    • MyPV (iOS only): The MyPV app for iPhone uses an up-to-date music video ranking system from eight countries across the world, so you can select your favorite promotional videos and create playlists. You can put videos registered on your playlists on continuous playback. Because you can also register search results from YouTube for playlists, you can easily create lists using your favorite videos. You can also repeat and loop videos registered on your playlists.
    • MIXTRAX (iOS only): Pioneer's proprietary MIXTRAX app from iTunes analyzes the music in your iTunes library to create custom playlists for non-stop song mixes with added DJ effects.
Note: The AppRadio 3's music apps can run in the background while you are using a navigation app.

Videos & Photo Apps: The Pioneer AppRadio 3 supports video & photo viewing from your iPhone 4/4S, iPhone 5/5C/5S, and Android smartphone.

    • Video Apps: With your vehicle parked and the parking brake fully engaged, stored movie downloads (from iTunes or GooglePlay) can be viewed on the AppRadio screen. You will control the video or movie with your iPhone 4/4S, iPhone 5/5C/5S, or compatible Android smartphone, not the AppRadio.
    • Photos: You are able to view photos stored on your iPhone 4/4S, iPhone 5/5C/5S, or Android smartphone on the Pioneer AppRadio's touchscreen display. You're able to access albums and camera rolls, and even view a slideshow.

    • CarKeyboard (Android only): The CarKeyboard app for Android allows you to input text directly from the 7" capacitive touchscreen display of the AppRadio 3 . CarKeyboard is a customizable multi-language keyboard that works in conjunction with the AppRadio app and can also be used as the default keyboard on your Android device.

    MirrorLink

MirrorLink (for Samsung & Sony): MirrorLink technology offers seamless connectivity between your compatible smartphone and the Pioneer AppRadio 3 receiver using the Pioneer CD-MU200 MirrorLink Cable (130CDMU200, sold separately). Compatible smartphones included the Samsung Galaxy S 3/Note 2 and the Sony Xperia Z smartpphones (w/ Android iOS). MirrorLink duplicates your smartphone's display on the head unit's touchscreen monitor, so you can operate MirrorLink compatible applications that have been optimized for in-car use on your smartphone from the head unit's touchscreen controls for a safer driving experience.

    • Drive Link for Samsung Galaxy S 3 (Android): To use MirrorLink with your Samsung Galaxy S 3 or Note 2, the free "Drive Link" application must be downloaded from Samsung Apps and installed on your compatible Samsung Galaxy S 3/Note 2 smartphone. Once downloaded, individual apps are grouped into three categories (Music, Location, Phone) for easy access.
    • Sony Xxperia Z: The Sony Xperia Z (with latest firmware update) does not require an additional app download.
Note: Compatible Samsung and Sony phone models, their launch timing, as well as app compatibility will differ by country or origin.

MirrorLink Apps: The MirrorLink smartphone app lets you quickly access specific apps for music playback, car navigation and maps, as well as hands-free telephone communication directly from the Pioneer AppRadio 3's touchscreen.

    • Music: You can listen to every music file stored in the smartphone. You can search for your music files by Favorites, Playlists, Artists, Albums, or All Songs.
    • Location (Drive): You can navigate via Google Maps. You are able to speak and type destinations. The app provides you with an on-screen map screen and audible directions.
    • Phone (Call): The app retrieves all contact information stored in the smartphone. You can make and answer phone calls from the head unit's touchscreen, just as you would normally do on your smartphone. The head unit will even read aloud text messages and let you reply.

    Built-in Bluetooth

Bluetooth Technology: The Pioneer AppRadio 3 is equipped with built-in Bluetooth v.3.0 (powered by Parrot), allowing you to make and receive phone calls wirelessly through the receiver; as well as stream music wirelessly from your smartphone to the head unit. In order to use Bluetooth wireless technology, your phone must also be Bluetooth compatible and be able to interpret certain profiles. This unit is compatible with the following Bluetooth Profiles:

    • Hands-Free Communication: HFP (Hands Free Profile), HSP (Head Set Profile), OPP (Object Push Profile), PBAB (Phone Book Access Profile).
    • Audio Streaming: A2DP (Advanced Audio Distribution Profile), AVRCP (Audio/Video Remote Control Profile).
Note: Due to the differences in Bluetooth technology, some Bluetooth enabled devices may be incompatible, function improperly, or may not support all features when used with the Pioneer AppRadio 3.

SPP (Secure Simple Pairing): With Secure Simple Pairing (SSP), you can easily pair a Bluetooth enabled phone to the AppRadio 3 without having to enter pin codes or go through complicated settings. When a registered Bluetooth device is in close proximity to the receiver, the auto connection function automatically pairs the two units. Up to 3 Bluetooth-compatible devices can be registered to this head unit. Only one device can be used at a time.

Hands-Free Communication (w/ external Mic): The AppRadio 3 supports wireless hands-free communication (HFP/HSP/OPP/PBAB) for your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone. The head unit will display the caller's information and an audible ring tone will be heard through your vehicle's speaker during an incoming call. You can manually answer an incoming call or have the unit automatically answer the call. The AppRadio 3 allows you to carry on a phone conversation from your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone using the head unit's external microphone and your car audio speakers. During a conversation you can adjust the volume, as well as switch between the Private Mode (talking directly on your cell phone) and the Hands Free Mode. Using the AppRadio 3, you can dial a phone number in one of the following ways:

    • Entering a Phone Number: You can make a call by entering the phone number using the head unit's on-screen keypad (0-9, *, #, +, C).
    • Speed (Preset) Dialing: You can easily store up to six phone numbers as presets for speed dialing.
    • Phone Book: The phone book in your Bluetooth enabled cellular phone will be transferred automatically when the phone is paired to this unit (up to 1,000 phonebook entries can be transferred). After finding the number you want to call in the phone book, you can select the entry and make the call. If a lot of numbers are registered in the phone book, you can search for the phone number by alphabet search mode.
    • Call History: The 80 most recent calls dialed, received, and missed are stored in memory. You can browse them and call numbers from these lists.
    • Voice Control: If your Bluetooth-enabled mobile phone is equipped with the voice control feature, you can use voice commands to make calls.
Note: Advanced phone operations that require attention, such as dialing numbers on the monitor or adjusting Bluetooth settings, are prohibited while driving. The vehicle's parking brake must be engaged to access these functions.

Wireless Audio Streaming (with Meta Data Display): The Pioneer AppRadio 3 supports wireless audio playback (AD2P) and control (AVRCP) of a Bluetooth enabled audio player or smartphone. The AppRadio 3 will be able to control your stored music's basic playback functions; such as Play/Pause, Previous/Next Track, Fast-Forward/Reverse, and Repeat/Random. The head unit will also display your stored music's song information; such as Artist name, Song title, and Album Art. The AppRadio 3 also supports audio streaming of music apps (metadata display and control will depend on music app). When an incoming call or outgoing call is in progress from your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone, audio streaming will be paused so you can take your call. Once the call is finished, your streaming music will resume.

Smartphone Voice Control: The AppRadio 3 offers a voice recognition function for your Bluetooth paired iPhone 4S/5 (running iOS 6.1+) or compatible Android smartphone.

    • For iPhone 4S/5: Users of the iPhone 4S and iPhone 5/5S/5C devices can take advantage of Siri Eyes Free functionality with a touch of the AppRadio 3 touchscreen. When activated, Siri voice prompts play through the vehicle's speakers and the user's questions and commands are received and transmitted using the external microphone provided with AppRadio 3. Siri Eyes Free provides access to many iPhone functions, such as music selection, listening to and composing text messages, Maps, calendar information, reminders, and more.
    • For Android: Users of compatible voice-enabled Android smartphones can utilize voice recognition using Pioneer's free of charge CarMediaPlayer app. Users can simply touch the voice icon on the display of the receiver and speak into the included microphone to activate many of the most commonly used commands.

    iPod A/V Playback

iPod Audio/Video Playback: In addition to full support of the iPhone 4/4S and 5/5C/5S, the Pioneer AppRadio 3 also supports playback of stored music and music apps (but not AppRadio app) from your other 30-pin or Lightning connector Apple devices. The AppRadio 3 will even display video from 30-pin Apple devices that support video transfer. Plug your compatible Apple device into the head unit's rear-panel proprietary port using Pioneer's CD-IU201N cable (130IU201N, sold separately).

    • 30-Pin Apple Device: Using Pioneer's proprietary CD-IU201N cable (130IU201N, sold separately) you can enjoy audio playback of your stored music, podcasts, and audiobooks; plus video playback of your stored movies, TV shows, video podcasts, and music videos from your 30-pin Apple device through the Pioneer AppRadio 3. You can also listen to music apps and watch video apps streamed to your Apple device through the Pioneer head unit.
    • Lightning Connector Apple Device: If you have an Apple device with the new Lightning connector, you will need the Apple Lightning to 30-pin adapter (472LTN230P, sold separately) in addition to the Pioneer CD-IU201N cable (sold separately) to connect the Apple device to the Pioneer head unit for audio playback only (video not supported).

Head Unit Control: You can control your 30-pin or Lightning connector Apple device from the AppRadio 3's touchscreen. From the head unit, you can search your Apple device's audio content by Playlist, Artist, Album, Song, Podcast, Genre, Composer, or Audiobook; and your video content by Video Playlist, Movie, Music Video, Video Podcast, or TV Show. Once you have selected a category, you can search each category alphabetically (A-Z). In addition, the head unit offers Link Search, which allows you to play songs related to the currently playing song. Link Search lets the head unit create an album list of the currently playing artist, a song list of the currently playing album, or an album list of the currently playing genre. You can also select Random & Repeat functions for a certain song or specific folder. Most iPod/iPhone device's clickwheel or touchscreen will be locked during connection (Apple devices w/ iOS 6.0+ will stay unlocked).

Information Display: The Pioneer AppRadio 3 will display the following iPod music information; Track #, Time Elapsed, Time Remaining, Artist Name, Song/Album Title, and Album Art.

Battery Charging: The head unit's USB connection provides 1A of current to power and charge your connected Apple device when your vehicle's ignition switch is set to the 'ACC' or 'On' position. This unit will not charge the Apple iPad. If your Apple device has no initial battery charge, then the unit will not recognize it.

Apple Device Compatibility Chart: The Pioneer AppRadio 3 supports the following iPod/iPhone model functions (as of 9/19/2013):

    • **You will need the Apple Lightning to 30-pin adapter (472LTN230P, sold separately) in addition to the Pioneer CD-IU201N cable (sold separately) to connect the Apple device to the Pioneer head unit for audio playback only (video not supported).
    • *Requires the Pioneer's proprietary CD-IU201N cable (130IU201N, sold separately) for audio/video playback; iPhone 4/4S also support AppRadio apps.
    • Apple iPod/iPhone software updates may change functionality results. If you download a newer software version, you may need to reset the head unit and your iPod/iPhone to regain functionality. If this doesn't work, you may need to wait until a newer software update is available.

    Touchscreen Display

7" Capacitive Touchscreen Display: The front of the unit features a clean & simple aesthetic look with only five physical buttons (Home, Volume up/down, Menu, Back) combined with a high-resolution WVGA (800 x 480) 7" capacitive touchscreen display. This capacitive touchscreen requires less pressure, responds faster, and can recognize multiple touch points simultaneously; all advantages when compared to traditional resistive touchscreen displays.  The AppRadio's 7" capacitive touchscreen offers touch, swipe, pinch, and zoom gestures. Touchscreen control is used for all functions including the app interface, MirrorLink, AM/FM radio, and Bluetooth. All of the AppRadio 3's controls have been designed specifically for in-vehicle operation to promote a safe driving experience.

Parking Brake Interlock: This unit has a parking brake interlock system that prohibits viewing of video programming and operating certain controls when the vehicle is in motion. In order to watch video on the in-dash monitor, the vehicle must be parked with the parking brake engaged. The head unit's light green wire must be connected to your vehicle's parking brake detection circuit. The head unit's touchscreen will display "Attention! Viewing of front seat video source while driving is strictly prohibited", if you try to watch a video when your vehicle is in motion.

Favorites: You can register the desired menu items on the AppRadio 3's "Favorites" menu screen. Registering your favorite menu items allows you to quickly jump to the registered menu item by a simple touch on the favorites menu. Up to 12 menu items can be registered as a "Favorite".

Display Adjustments: The Pioneer AppRadio 3 offers the following monitor display adjustments.

    • Widescreen Modes: You can choose from the following widescreen modes when playing back video - Full (4:3 picture is enlarged in the horizontal direction only; enabling you to enjoy a 4:3 picture without any omissions), Zoom (4:3 picture is enlarged in the same proportion both vertically and horizontally; ideal for a 16:9 screen), Normal (4:3 picture is displayed as it is).
    • Picture Adjustments: You can store numerous video settings for the head unit's video source and rear-view camera; including brightness (adjusts the black intensity), contrast (adjusts contrast) color (adjusts color saturation), temperature (adjust the color temperature), and Dimmer (adjusts brightness).
    • Backgrounds: You can select from 4 background images (Black, Gray, Sunrise, Space) for the head unit's LCD touchscreen.
Note: If you do not operate the unit for 30 seconds, demonstration images are displayed. You can turn this function Off.

2-DIN Chassis: The Pioneer AppRadio 3 has a 2-DIN chassis (also known as "Double DIN" or size DD), and will fit in many vehicles with a large dash opening. The unit can be ISO-mounted using factory brackets. There is also an optional double-DIN sleeve (130ADTV133, sold separately) available for this unit that will allow you to Euro-mount or custom mount the Pioneer head unit in your vehicle. As always, please consult Crutchfield's Outfit My Car to verify fit with your vehicle.

Installation Angle: For optimum playback performance, the unit should be installed at an angle of less than 60-degrees.

    Audio Section

MOSFET50 Internal Amplifier: The AppRadio 3 is equipped with a 50 watts x 4 (peak) MOSFET amplifier for low distortion, high power output. The amplifier is strong enough to power small subwoofers to moderate volume levels in compact cars and pickups. For higher volume levels from subwoofers, an optional amplifier may be connected to the preamp outputs.

    • CEA2006 Specs: 14 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20Hz-20kHz, 1% THD-N)
    • Continuous Power Output: 22 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 50Hz-15kHz, 5% THD)
    • Maximum Power Output: 50 watts x 4 channels (or 50 watts x 2 channels at 4 ohms + 70 watts x 1 channel at 2 ohms for subwoofer)

Note: The power specifications for the Pioneer AppRadio are compliant with the CEA2006 Mobile Amplifier Power Testing and Measurement standards from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). These standards were developed as a way to equitably compare power specs from model to model and between manufacturers.

2.0-Volt Preamp Outputs: The Pioneer AppRadio 3 features two pairs of 2.0-volt preamp outputs. The unit's rear preamp output can be configured as a fading rear-channel output or a non-fading subwoofer output with a low-pass filter, phase adjustment, and output level control.

Subwoofer Control: When configured as the subwoofer output, you can select the frequency of the 18dB/octave low pass filter (50, 63, 80, 100, or 125 Hz), select the subwoofer phase (normal/reverse), and the subwoofer gain (+6 to -24).

High-Pass Filter: The AppRadio 3 features a high-pass crossover for the front & rear channels when your front & rear speakers are connected by the unit's speaker-outputs or preamp-outputs. You can adjust the high-pass crossover from 50Hz, 63Hz, 80Hz, 100Hz, 125Hz, or Off. The "Off" selection is a full-range setting.

EEQ (Easy EQ) + 5-Band Graphic EQ: There are seven stored equalizer curves which you can easily recall at any time. You can choose from - Powerful (low- and high-frequencies are boosted), Natural (low- and high-frequencies slightly boosted), Vocal (midrange is boosted), Super Bass (low-frequencies are boosted), Flat (nothing boosted), Custom 1 (user adjustable), or Custom 2 (user adjustable). The Custom 1 and Custom 2 EQ modes allow you to manually adjust the level (+/- 12dB) of each band of the head unit's 5-band graphic equalizer (100Hz, 315Hz, 1.25kHz, 3.15kHz, 8kHz)

Audio Settings: The head unit provides further sound adjustments for your car audio system.

    • Loudness: The Loudness function compensates for deficiencies in the low- and high-frequency ranges at low volume. You can set the Loudness to High, Mid, Low, or Off.
    • Bass Boost: You can easily boost the subwoofer bass level by using the Bass Boost function. The Bass Boost feature allows you increase the subwoofer level from 0 to +6 (12dB).
    • Source Level Adjustment (SLA): This function lets you adjust the volume level of each source (AM, Pandora, iPod, Apps) to prevent radical changes in volume when switching between sources. Settings are based on the unit's FM volume level, which remains unchanged. Each source can be independently adjusted from -4 dB to +4 dB.

Switchable Rear Channel/Subwoofer Speaker Output: The rear speaker outputs can be set to provide full range output with full fading capability, or they can be set to provide non-fading subwoofer (low-pass) output. When the rear speaker outputs are set to subwoofer mode, the rear preamp outputs also switch from full range to subwoofer outputs. When set for subwoofer operation, you can connect the rear speaker leads directly to two small 4-ohm passive subwoofers or a dual voice coil sub with 4-ohm voice coils. If you prefer to use a single 2-ohm subwoofer, you can connect the woofer to one set of speaker leads, leaving the other set of rear leads disconnected. The maximum output provided when a 2-ohm load is connected to one set of leads is 70 watts.

    Convenience Features

Steering Wheel Remote Compatibility: The head unit features an OEM steering wheel remote control input on the rear of the unit that lets you keep your vehicle's factory radio steering wheel remote controls when used with an optional steering wheel audio control adapter (sold separately). Please consult Crutchfield's Outfit My Car to see if your vehicle is compatible.

AM/FM Tuner: The Pioneer AppRadio 3 features a built-in AM/FM tuner with RDS text information display. The Radio Data System (RDS) feature displays radio broadcast information such as artist, title, and album when listening to compatible AM/FM stations. BSM (Best Station Memory) lets you automatically store the six strongest stations under presets 1-6 of the currently tuned band. The AM/FM tuner has 3 FM banks and 2 AM banks. You can store 6 presets for each bank giving you a total of 18 FM presets and 12 AM presets. You can even enter an AM/FM frequency directly, using the unit's on-screen keypad (0-9).  Local seek tuning lets you tune in only those radio stations with sufficiently strong signals for good reception.

Rear View Camera: The AppRadio 3 is equipped with a composite video Rear View Camera input. The unit features a function that automatically switches to the rear camera image (Rear View Camera input jack) when an optional rear camera (130NDBC6, sold separately) is installed. When the transmission is in reverse, the screen automatically switches to the rear view camera (the violet/white wire in the 16-pin harness must be connected to the vehicle's reverse lamp circuit for automatic video switching). Automatic video switching takes approximately 1.1 seconds. Pioneer recommends using a camera with a mirror image (reversed) output.

Note: Audio from your music source will continue playing, while the back-up camera is displayed.

Own an iPhone 5s. I really am liking this radio.i believe this radio works best with the iphone. I have a manual transmission and it is working very well for me. Installation was a breeze and I have never done a radio install in my life. Everything works as it should. You don't need pioneer's $120 cable setup to get your phone to work. All I bought was a lightning adapter to hdmi and an hdmi cable I had lying around the house. Crutchfield is the way to go as they include all the install parts you need for free. Don't let nerd squad at local store hack up your car. Do it yourself it's easy
    Pros:
    Looks great. Dash command rocks!
    Cons:
Too many nav apps. Need more apps but I hear pioneer opened it up to developers. Hopefully I can keep this longer than I can keep a phone as they update way too frequently

I love this radio! I need to learn more about how to use it to get the full benefit of all it's capabilities. Better than my navigation system I have in my 2014 QX60...
    Pros:
Love being able to use my I-phone apps with it. Navigation works great.
    Cons:
My husband installed it and I know he had to call Crutchfield several times to get some additional help with installation.

The potential for this unit is unlimited. It's just not there yet. Pioneer has an opportunity to take full control of this market for years to come if they can figure it out. Inexpensive compared to other double din Nav units. Great sound and killer looks. The back up camera function works great and needs no changes. Bluetooth works great but they need to figure out how to get the album art to display on the huge screen (Come on Pioneer!).

The pairing with my Galaxy S3 is somewhat cluttered and clumsy. I needed 3 cables. An hdmi cable plus a pioneer cable (that looks just like a usb cable) and a Samsung MHL adapter to get full mirroring. There are bugs that need to be worked out. If you don't root your phone and get ARU...you will only get a select few apps to work...I understand that liability is an issue here but this unit feels like a big tease and becomes frustrating with all the hoop-jumping that is required to get full mirroring. And even when you do get full mirroring...there will be bugs and kinks that need to be dealt with. Hopefully in the years to come they will have a true full-mirroring device with no limits and no glitches...
    Pros:
Inexpensive (compared to other units), sounds great, and looks great.
    Cons:
Limited to Apps that Pioneer has selected (unless you root your phone) and hardware required (at least for my Galaxy S3) can make hooking up somewhat cluttered.

Nice radio for a nice price

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I ordered this head unit for my 2000 Ford F350. I wanted something to bring the truck into this decade. After a lot of searching I came across the Appradio 3. I chose to purchase the DA-110 because I thought the DVR and CD feature was useless and the thought of a motorized screen seemed like a potential future failure point. Realistically with the iphone connected I could play netflix or any other video on my phone so DVR was a waste and CD's are almost extinct at this point. The price from Crutchfield was very fair especially when you consider that they included the the tool to remove the old radio, the wiring harness adapter and the trim kit. Also their support was top notch. When I called (many times) with installation questions they knew who I was, what radio I bought and what vehicle it was being installed into as soon as they answered the phone. I did end up ordering the extra wires I needed to link this head unit to my iphone 5. It was a little bit of a pain but I understand that its not really practical to include all the various wires that would be needed to connect the various phones to this head unit. At the end of the day the cost would just be passed a long to the consumer and you would end up with a bunch of wires that you didn't need. The installation went smooth and I added a license plate backup camera to link with the head unit. It took a few days to learn the different features of the appradio but all in all I like it and I am happy with it
    Pros:
Large screen, easy bluetooth link with phone, good sound, good price
    Cons:
HDMI and lightning wire to the adapter that plugs into phone to link it to appradio is pretty bulky and not very flexible. Would be nice to see more apps available and more online news as to what is in the works for new apps. Less warning screens when lauching into the apps section everytime.

    Pioneer App Radio

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Pioneer App Radio 3 is a great unit for someone who wants to experience all the bella and whistles of a expensive factory unit. The upside being adaptable and user friendly. I must say Crutchfield definetly has their knowledge of products and installation down to a science. It only took myself and a friend an hour to install the complete system including a backup camera. I definetly recommend buying from crutchfield if you want proffesional results, because everything you will need is provided.
    Pros:
Perfect install did not have to change or alter anything on my vehicle.
    Cons:
The App Radio's settings dont have a lot of options in them. Example. Dimmer, clock adjustment etc. it is very app dependent from your phone and doesnt store them on the radio.

    Pioneer SPH-DA110 AppRadio 3 Reviews

I think the AppRadio is a great step forward. Still needs some tweaks worked out. It can just be a bit slow to launch the apps when starting the car. Installed in an 11 wrangler, quite a bit cheaper than the factor nag and looked good in the dash. Overall does what it says. Some functions could be a bit faster.
    Pros:
iPhone screen in the car, I can see WAZE and other applications better than before. Nice multitouch screen, if you can run an iPhone this works the same way. Also good for the passenger, not a big learning curve for them either.
    Cons:
App takes a bit to start up. The radio mix function does not remember the last setup. if you use any of the function s on the iPhone the app radio needs to basically start again when you stop using the functions. No subwoofer output, not a big deal in my noisy wrangler, but could be a concern for some people.

Generally this thing is pretty cool. its a bit ridiculous that something called "app radio" work work out of the box with iphone5 with out spending another $100. More control over the iphone would be nice ( maybe some SMS function/siri/etc) the single thing that upset me to no end is the " BSM " button that lives under the 6th FM preset. Who uses this button more then a rare occasion ? Its intended use is to automatically find local stations and set the presets. Ive owned this radio for a few weeks and have accidentally hit this button no less then 5 times. This results in you loosing all your presets. I see no reason this function cant be moved someplace else or at least add a confirmation screen after you hit it. Speaking of confirmations. Do i really need to "ok" the legal junk EVERY single time i turn my car on ? AND ! every single time i connect my Iphone ?? And lastly.. the FM presets scroll whats playing across there respective buttons, a nice feature other then they only update when you are on the actual channel. If they updated in real time showing you whats on each station without you needing to tune to it. A trim ring would be nice too !
    Pros:
Decent gadget for a pretty good price
    Cons:
    Read above!

Nice Head Unit With Room For Improvement

Written By DanielR, Queens, NA on Tuesday, March 04, 2014
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Buying everything from Crutchfield made the install on my Ford easy. I wired everything in my dining room and connected the Ford connector to the provided connector from Crutchfield, hooked up the antenna, GPS and mic and was all set to bolt back into car within the hour. It looks nice in my dash and the buttons on screen are the right size for me. There are a few things that Pioneer could do to make it a better unit. One is to make one cable that goes from the head unit to the iPhone 5. Currently, you have to use a HDMI and data cable . Also, allow iPhone 5 users the ability to use the built-in music app to play music off of the iPod. Currently that app is only for 30-pin iPhones. Another issue is that there needs to be more integration between the device and the head unit. Most of the apps still require you to operate the phone as well as the app on the head unit. Another big on is, with most of the apps you CANNOT turn off your screen. It will close down the app on the head unit. These can all be easily be fixed and I hope they are working on it. One last thing is the parking break issue. I know you should not watch videos in the car while driving (and I did not buy this for that) I mainly wanted it for GPS and music. You need to use your parking break to turn off the safety feature that disables the screen. I could not find my parking brake cable; so I had to YouTube how to bypass that. (that's all I'm going to say about that) :-)
    Pros:
With Crutchfield's help, I was able to hook this thing up with no problem (with the exception of the parking brake cable location. It sounded great with my stock speakers (but I upgraded those as well and it sounds even better) Like using a GPS from my phone on the big screen Like having my iTunes library at the ready (with the use of a
    Cons:
Lost the feature that muted the audio when my stock parking sensors goes off Need one direct cable from head unit to lighting iOS devices Still need to use phone in order to use some features Sunlight washes out the display at times Needs more apps The parking brake should not have to be used to use the GPS or music Trying to find your parking brake cable might be a pain (if you can even find it at all)

The AppRadio is compatible with the Galaxy Note, but it requires the Pioneer CD-AH200 connectivity kit. If the customer has the Galaxy Note II, then he also needs a 5-pin to 11-pin MHL adapter (not available from Crutchfield). a href="http:// www.crutchfield.com/p_130CDAH200/Pioneer-CD-AH200.html?tp=120">The kit.

Written By Mike, Herndon, VA on Monday, February 24, 2014
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Overall, I really like this unit. Out of the box, the mobile phone mirroring is somewhat lacking. It required a massive amount of research to determine how to mirror and charge my Galaxy S3 with this head unit. It also required a fair amount of research to determine what harness and steering wheel control module was needed in my '08+ Subaru.

After rooting my phone and installing AppRadio Unchained, I have FULL mirroring. I can play music while using Google Maps and running Torque, which is quite impressive.

The hands free calling works very nicely. The included microphone and GPS antenna work well.
    Pros:
Once you figure out what you need to achieve full phone mirroring, it's quite an impressive head unit.
    Cons:
There is a lot of convicting information on the internet. I ended up ordering my adapters and cabling correctly the first time, but it took days of research. A special 2008+ Subaru radio harness is needed as the Metra version doesn't include the 3 wires needed for steering wheel controls.

    AppRadio 3 is tops!

Written By RickT, Fredericksburg, VA on Monday, February 10, 2014

First most negative reviews are from people who don't know what they are doing. I have an iPhone 5S and this thing works GREAT! I didn't give top marks because yes there are some minor bugs, such as allowing apps, however, it's not as often as people elude to. Also regarding the issue of not being able to listen to the radio while in apps and switching between, well they haven't perfected the double click home button (on the radio not phone) it works just like on the phone and it works just fine. Yes sometimes there are some hiccups but not as much as some would lead you to believe. I installed this into my 2009 Corolla by myself and it was VERY easy. Best advice is PLAN YOUR INSTALL. If you have iPhone 5 with lighting cable I would get all the suggested DVI and HDMI cables it makes a major difference. Also there is a USB pigtail for Androids on the top right rear, I cut a small hole in my glovebox and I have access there. I then ran the primary cables for the iPhone 5 to my center console and cut hole in bottom.
    Pros:
Easy Install, looks great, nice sound upgrade for factory system. Voice command works great for iPhone can't comment on Android.
    Cons:
Considering other radio options and capabilities, I don't see anything on the market that compares. Minor bugs at times, but isn't that true of all technology, even the phones we use.

    Cool Idea Poor execution

Written By Andrewwe, Fountain Hills, AZ on Sunday, January 26, 2014
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I really wanted to like this radio. However, I soon found that there are may flaws and quite simply this radio is not ready for primetime. First, Crutchfield did tell me that not all Android phones would work with the radio, so we research it and found that my HTC One S was an approved device. However, only after I couldn't get Voice dialing to work did I discover that NO Adroid device support Voice Dialing (only Iphones work). Then I became annoyed with the BSM button. It's located right under the bottom preset button so it's easy to hit it by mistake which retunes all the stations to the strongest in the area. Then I found that Bluetooth wouldn't connect about 60% of the time, then I found my finger prints smudged the screen so bad that I couldn't see the screen when sunlight hit it just wrong... I live in AZ so that's always. Then I found that phone wouldn't charge when connected to the radio so I had to uninstall and reinstall. Then I used WAZE the nav app. WOW that's the worst Nav app ever created. It couldn't navigate anyone you out of a paper bag.
    Pros:
Cool Idea, maybe the execution is better on the Iphone. How Pandora works on the radio interface.
    Cons:
The app that installs on the Android Phone, the apps that interface between the radio and the phone. Managing phone contacts on the radio is cludgy. The screen can't be seen in the sunlight. The BSM button location. No Voice dialing on Android. Generally not ready for primetime.

Frustrated to the point of replacing it

Written By DuaneH, NoVA on Wednesday, January 01, 2014
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The AppRadio is definitely cool-looking, but that's where the fun stops. The software running it has some quirks and some outright bugs that have been driving me batty. Things like having to re-authorize the app to run on my phone after a phone call or changing sources to a non-App source - like FM radio. Quirks like not being able to listen to FM radio while running a navigation app. bugs like the screen blacking out and songs quitting, forcing me to pay attention to what's going on with the head unit whilst I am supposed to be doing something else - like DRIVING! Im at the point where I want to rip it out of the dash, take it out to a field, and shoot it to put me out of its misery.

P.S. - I can say it is built quite sturdily - I broke the dash mounting kit when I punched the screen, but the AppRadio itself appears no worse for the wear.
    Pros:
    KewlFaktor
    Cons:
Quirky, buggy, and requiring constant care and feeding.

    awesome radio

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Let me start by saying this was the first time I ever installed a radio into my car. Crutchfield did a great job with sending an instruction manual that was easy to follow. They also sent all the parts needed for the installation, so that was very convenient. As for the radio itself, it is simply AWESOME. Instantly, my sound quality improves 100 folds. the menus are very easy to navigate through. The toughest part was getting the mirror link to work. But after purchasing the hand brake override and connecting that to the radio, the mirror linking worked perfectly. The system also comes with a hands free mic for your bluetooth phone calls, which I use daily.

Overall, the system works well. Sound quality, picture quality, easy installation with easy menu navigation, and lots of extras, all rounds out to produce a great radio experience. Well done pioneer and clutchfied for carrying such a magnificent radio!
    Pros:
easy installation sound quality touch screen mirror link
    Cons:
having to purchase the handbrake override for a not so cheap price a little lag from touch scrolling a lil pricey screen gets a lil smudgy (but that's common with all touch screens)

    Great System...Sound is Amazing

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this system within the last 30 days and I am happy with my decision. I have a 2007 Hyundai Azera and I was looking for something that was modern but not gimmicky looking to put in my car. The installation took longer than expected which was mostly my fault for over thinking the process. Once the installation was completed; I was thrilled with the system responsiveness. I have told everyone that will listen about my SPH-DA110. I love it!! I do wish that a firmware update would be released to allow for a passenger to make use of the GPS functions if needed. It seems impractical to have to pull over on a highway in an area that you are unfamiliar with in order to access your GPS apps. It would also be nice to beable to update the background selections via bluetooth sharing. I would also like the funtions of changing the brightness. Great sound quality. I'm still learning all the functions but I am very happy so far.
    Pros:
Great Sound; off the scale "cool factor" ease of use! Creates endless options for music listening!!
    Cons:
Needs brightness control function. wishlist for changing backgrounds using photos from smartphone or web. Need GPS changes to be allowed without have o pull over and apply parking brake.

    Don't waste your money

The idea behind this receiver is great...if it worked easily and intuitively.
1.)You constantly have to hit buttons on the iphone and the receiver to get apps to work. It is far from "plug and play".
2.)if you're used to high quality touchscreens on your phone, you will be disappointed with the quality of this one. The screen on my 2008 Prius from the factory is more responsive.
3.) Switching between apps (music to navigation for example) is slow and distracting while driving.
4.) the cable requires a heavy HDMI cable and the iphone charger sort of bundled together, which is pain and doesn't move around easily.
5.) Rdio doesn't work if you have updated the app recently at all
    6.)iOs 7 caused problems.

Bottom line. If you like your music apps on your phone, buy a receiver that simply connects to the device and control the music from the phone. It will be faster to get music playing, less distracting, and you're not held hostage if Pioneer isn't compatible with future updates. Spend the saved money on a clean install that puts the cables where you want them.
    Pros:
    Bluetooth phone connection
    Cons:
Interface issues prevent enjoyment of any other features.

Pretty disappointed with this unit. The hands free function is not useful and is very difficult, if not impossible, to use. There are only two sets of RCAs which make it difficult to run a five channel amp. Bummer. I will be sending this back to crutchfield and switching it out with the AVH-X2500BT. Crutchfield was incredibly helpful and made the return simple.

Very cool product. Was a little difficult to figure out how each component worked, but in time it is all good. I ditched Sirius because it frankly costs too much. Now I get my entire music collection at my fingers as well as Pandora !!
    Pros:
Love the features and capabilities. Not more CDs to swap and Pandora !!
    Cons:
Would like to see more apps supported via the main panel icons versus connected via the AppRadio App. Also there should be a better way to connect the phone. Having the CD-AH200C and then adding the Samsung EPL-FU10BEBSTD for Galaxy S4 is crazy.
