AppRadio — the next generation

Pioneer's innovative AppRadio platform moves forward with their SPH-DA120 AppRadio 4 receiver. This versatile Pioneer builds upon the impressive capabilities of the AppRadio 3 receiver by adding some new features, including compatibility with Apple CarPlay, an improved graphical user interface (GUI) that makes it easier to access and use your apps, along with dual USB inputs, an auxiliary input, and a complete set of preamp outputs — front, rear, and subwoofer.

Pioneer SPH-DA120 AppRadio 4

Control your apps from the large 6.2" touchscreen.

Apple CarPlay®

Pioneer's the first on deck with CarPlay in aftermarket car stereos. CarPlay integrates your iPhone into the driving experience in a new, seamless interface, putting iPhone content at the driver's fingertips with minimal distraction. That means easy access to your music library, your phone, messages, navigation, and many third party streaming music apps, too. Learn more at

AppRadioLIVE makes it easy

Pioneer's innovative AppRadioLIVE streamlines your app info and functions into one easy-to-use interface. You'll enjoy quick access to your music, media, calendar, and other sources you subscribe to, just by downloading the AppRadioLIVE app and syncing your services. AppRadioLIVE works with your apps to provide visual map guidance and access to points of interest, as well as the ability to search for concerts, shows, and other local events of interest. And you can show several sources of information simultaneously, quickly shifting from one to another with a touch of your finger.

And what apps can you take advantage of? You'll find plenty to enjoy, including MotionX-GPS Drive, INRIX® traffic, AUPEO! Personal Radio, Pandora® Internet radio, and Pioneer's MIXTRAX, with more coming down the road. The apps will look great on the 6.2" capacitive touchscreen, which recognizes all zoom, swipe, and pinch gestures just as if you were using your smartphone.

Note: AppRadio Mode and AppRadioLIVE are currently not compatible with iOS 8 due to stability and display issues. Please see "Details" for more information.

Siri® Eyes Free

If you have an iPhone 4S or 5, you'll hear Siri's voice prompts through your vehicle's sound system, and you can make commands or ask questions through the microphone that's included with this receiver. You can set reminders, ask for songs, request directions, or anything else you'd normally do with your iPhone.

Works with Android™ phones and features MirrorLink™ connectivity

The AppRadio 4 doesn't leave Android by the wayside when it comes to features, either. Not only will its App Mode support many Android phones, but this receiver takes it to the next level with MirrorLink support.  MirrorLink allows certain Nokia and Samsung smartphones (with more to come in the future) to display their interface on the AppRadio 4, so you can make phone calls, access map services, or check out music with ease. If you don't have a MirrorLink phone, you can still download a free Pioneer app that enables voice commands with your Android phone.

Talk hands-free and stream audio wirelessly with Bluetooth®

Built-in Bluetooth adds to the versatility of this cool receiver — pair your phone, and you'll be able to talk hands-free and access your phone book from the touchscreen. You can even stream audio from your smartphone to the receiver.

Want to keep your steering wheel controls?

In most cars, you'll need an adapter to retain those controls with this car stereo. Connect a few wires, then  program the adapter for your particular car and radio, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. You'll see the adapters that work with your vehicle when you add this receiver to your cart.

Bluetooth note: Use of this receiver's Bluetooth features will depend upon your phone's Bluetooth capabilities. Learn more in our article explaining Bluetooth profiles.

iPod/smartphone note: If you're going to use your iPod or smartphone with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for compatibility information.

Complement your setup with a phone mount

The AppRadio 4 requires input from your iPhone from time to time — most notably when running the MotionX GPS Drive app. It's a good idea to mount your iPhone where it's easy to reach. Check out our selection of Pro.Fit mounts.

    Surprisingly Happy with Apple CarPlay

Car: 2003 Toyota 4Runner with JBL and RDS Phone: iPhone 5s with iOS 8.4

This was my third install of a Crutchfield radio and by far the most difficult. Mostly this was because the 4Runner requires removing the gear shift trim panel, the console trim, the driver's knee panel and the climate control panel before you can remove the receiver trim panel.

The wiring adapter hook up was a little confusing but two quick calls to Crutchfield cleared that up.

Otherwise the install was smooth if a little time consuming.

    Some things you should know:

If you want to use CarPlay, you must attach the supplied USB cable to USB 1. This is also the USB interface used to update the firmware if needed. If you want to use AppRadio you must attach your HDMI cable (not supplied) and then also connect that to Lightning Digital AV Adapter that you must purchase from Apple (not included). There is a Parking Brake sensor wire that must be connected to the parking brake switch. This is to prevent you from watching videos from the head unit while driving. It is also required for updating the firmware (which was not required as I already had the latest version out of the box). There are several YouTube videos describing how to bypass this but it will void your warranty.

Since I did not have the required cables for AppRadio, I set the unit up for CarPlay and am very happy with it. In combination with Siri it is very easy to use and mostly hands-off allowing better attention on driving.

    Pros: CarPlay

Cons: Missing cables required for AppRadio

    Great for our vehicle.

This radio works like a charm. Plays mp4 and avi video files off of a 64gb flash drive I installed in the rear of the console so the kids are happy. App Radio & Car Play make iPhone integration fantastic for my wife and I. Is a great radio and much appreciate the rebate offer.

Pros: Awesome interface, tons of features.

Cons: Can't use Car Play, and USB2 as source for rear output at the same time.

The head unit works great. Only issue was with Crutchfield service. I ordered it off of the phone and I clearly spelled out my email address but he recorded it incorrectly. Since I didn't get the email confirmation I called to get the tracking number. I was given the incorrect tracking number so I had to call back. Then I installed the unit and the wiring harness adapter sent for my vehicle did not work properly and caused very poor sound output. It would pop, sometime not work and had static. One of the harnesses that is suppose to fit my vehicle fit but would not lock in with my factory harness so it came loose. I called tech support to find out what happened. The tech asked if I read the instructions about having to set my factory radio fader and balance to zero and the volume at 3/4 volume. I told him I did not receive the instructions related to that. He sent me a new wiring harness out which eliminated the sound issues. The one harness still does not lock together with my factory harness so I taped the two together....Ghetto!!! Very poor service all around by Crutchfield. I will not make any further purchases from Crutchfield due to the service.

I replaced an older Pioneer headend with the Pioneer AppRadio 4. Easy replacement and what a great upgrade! Just like having my iPhone in the dash of my car (supported apps). I like Apple maps and have been happy with the Siri integration. I was able to program all important functions to work from my steering wheel (4Runner). Very happy.

Pros: Apple car play Ease of use

I'm very happy with my Pioneer radio. I purchased it primarily for the CarPlay features and have not yet used it extensively with any of the AppRadio features outside of Pandora. I love having my incoming notifications read to me via the speakers in the car, and Maps integration is excellent. I did have some initial issues with obtaining the right accessories to retain steering wheel controls, but Crutchfield support was outstanding. It took getting one of the interface modules replaced (which Crutchfield advance shipped to me) and a couple of calls in to their support center, but now everything is working perfectly. Crutchfield support is amazing - I'm so glad I shopped with them and won't go anywhere else in the future.

Pros: CarPlay integration is spot on, works exactly as you'd expect it to with my iPhone 5S. Being able to use the OTA radio and Apple Maps for GPS at the same time is amazing.

Cons: Setup was a bit of a chore requiring several calls in to Crutchfield support - this is not a knock on the unit but rather the documentation for the Aftermarket interface modules.

The Appradio 4 is to date the best Pioneer deck I've ever owned. It has amazing sound and super easy to use. Work wonderful with my iPhone 6.

Tip: install the USB cable near where you dock your phone for ease when updating the firmware.

Pros: Great sound. Adjustable sound levels for multiple passengers Easy to use navigation Takes away the desire to want to constantly check the phone while driving.

Cons: When using a jump drive for firmware updates make sure it has nothing else on the drive. Needs compatibility with rideshare apps like Lyft or Uber.

Great media player. It was exactly what I was looking for to use my android phone to the fullest in my car. I tried several others and this was the first one to implement Mirrorlink successfully to me.

Cons: Only real con is I wish they kept the 7" screen.

This is an awesome head unit I got it open box for less then the new price and I was ecstatic, installation for my '05 mustang was very easy I got everything I needed for free. My only complaint is I don't know how to dim the screen and at nights it's slightly annoying, also for my mustang the antenna needs an extension to reach the input which is on the opposite side of the factory unit. Finally I didn't know where to plug the parking brake wire to as the colors didn't match but no big deal. Overall I love it, looks good feels good and the bass in my car became very full sounds like the stock subs had an upgrade! Crutchfield also is awesome with letting me pay on two cards!

Pros: Great quality Improved bass and all sound Easy install for mustang Looks amazing

Cons: Can't dim the screen Apple maps sucks Imo anything above 250 is expensive (tho worth it just would appreciate a lower price)

I am not particularly handy and so had some trepidation about installing this unit myself, but it could not have been more straightforward. Crutchfield made sure I had all the parts needed and the whole process took about 2 hours. I was amazed when the steering wheel controls worked.

CarPlay is, as other reviewers have noted, still a work in progress. But in general, it is exceeding expectations. The navigation and music apps are pretty much flawless. Siri has the usual challenges.

Pros: Install couldn't have been easier

Cons: Carplay still a work in progress.

Others have tried but Pioneer (and Apple) have done it right. Honestly, I can't provide any input on "AppRadio" apps because I've used it with Apple CarPlay exclusively. I've Loved It! The system has glitches a couple times requiring a restart. But it's not clear if that's Pioneers fault or Apples. I'm thinking Apple tho.

I've been able operate this fully without opening the users manual once, except for installation which was also easy.

Pros: Easy to use, great interface, easy to install, supports Apple CarPlay

Cons: No way to turn off or "reboot" except by turning vehicle off, a little expensive too

I really want to like this product, but it just does not work properly without a lot of effort every time you restart your car. The sound quality is good, but if you are looking for a product that works and is easy to use, look elsewhere. Every time I use it I must jump through some hoop to make it work, such as a hard reboot of my phone, killing and restarting apps, or even restarting my truck. Having to fiddle so much to get this thing to work negates the benefit, which is supposed to be a safer user interface while driving. I would not buy again and would not recommend to anyone else until the technology is truly ready.

Pros: - Sound quality is very good - Aesthetically good

Cons: - Extremely buggy - You have to hit "OK" to dismiss a warning screen every time you restart your car. I would not purchase again due to this issue alone - Appradio mode just does not work well, and does not work at all with most of the best apps - Poor interface from the Pioneer side (Carplay is OK when you get it to work) - Too expensive for what you get - There are no physical knobs or buttons, which makes hitting the correct virtual buttons difficult - Apple Maps is the only Nav App tha

I've owned a few other Pioneer receivers, which were also very good products, but this takes the cake by far! It is extremely easy to use, works wonderfully to integrate iPhone into a dashboard receiver, looks astounding in my 2005 Volvo V70R dash, and sounds incredible! I was excited to find a head unit that could seemingly "do it all" by combining the usefulness of my cell phone's apps directly on the screen, and have the 'Pioneer sound' quality that we've come to love. I'd like to preface the following review, by saying that I'm a fairly knowledgeable individual that works in IT... so using and configuring electronics, in general, come quite easily to me.

I've had this unit installed for less than a day, and sadly, it's been been a huge let-down. What's the point of a product called an "Appradio" if you're not actually able to listen to the radio while using, for instance, a navigation app? You heard that right... you can't listen to the radio while using an app / appmode. You must listen to MP3's on your device while using apps. This is an egregious oversight by Pioneer. Surprisingly, they've had 4 units now where, somehow, no one has thought that 'that' might be a good idea. Aside from that, connecting to your phone is like playing the lottery. Enter/Exit the car and turning the system on, sometimes it works. Sometimes it doesn't, requiring a reboot of the phone or shutting the car off and back on -- cause you know, that's practical.

Super frustrating, and a complete loss of my time and, more importantly, my money at the install shop. I now have to pay even more money to replace this unit, that in my opinion, is nothing more than a poorly executed great idea (for the 4th time).

Pros: It's a Pioneer, so when you actually are able to listen to the radio, it sounds good.

Cons: Cannot listen to the radio while using apps... must use the device mp3's. Poorly executed User Interface and in general, switiching between modes is an exercise in patience. Color Gamut / Image Quality of the Screen is poor. Buggy Connectivity to Devices in both AppRadio and MirrorLink (I was not able to get MirrorLink to work on any device)

I upgraded from an App Radio 3 to incorporate the CarPlay feature and overall I'm a little disappointed. Using the iOS 8.1.1 will not work with many previous apps until an upgrade becomes available from Pioneer. The screen is slightly smaller than the 3 and the features just did not justify the premium price. My advice would be to wait till Pioneer gets it figured out then make the purchase if this is the radio you are looking for.

    Pros: CarPlay features

Cons: Overall price for a unit that won't run previous App Radio 3 apps with iOS 8.

I purchased the Pioneer SPH-DA120 AppRadio 4 after its announcement. I needed a replacement radio for my wife's Nisson Versa that supported her iPhone 5S and this fit the bill well.

The radio arrived well packaged and a day early! The radio itself is complete with mounting hardware, remote microphone, remote GPS antenna, Pioneer's wiring connector/pigtail, and installation/operator's manual. Crutchfield also supplies an universal car connector pigtail and car radio antenna adaptor...thanks!

Installation was fast and easy and I had no issues. The radio connects to the iPhone through the USB port and lightning cable and displays CarPlay on the phone. The radio mimics the key features of the phone and seems to work well. I suspect it will only get better as Apple refines it and Pioneer provides firmware.

The biggest issue was the "Hey Siri" Eye's free system. It is a hit and miss with Siri, depending on your signal strength. Most of the time, SIRI fails and I have to hit the SIRI button on the radio or phone. Other than that, the music playlists, contact lists, Spotify, and Map works well. I did have problems with the map not transferring completely at time, only the turn directions. I think this is an Apple Carplay issue, which I hope will be resolve in future updates.

The sound quality of the radio is much better than the OEM radio. My wife can easily operate the radio as well as use the all the features of Carplay, so I am happy.

Pros: Easy to install, easy to operate, implements Apple's CarPlay. Crutchfield provides all the necessary plugs and provides excellent support!

Cons: Apple's CarPlay is not quite ready for primetime yet. I am hopeful that Apple will continue to improve the implementation as they do other aspects of their IOS.

We're early adopters, so give it some time to fully bake. Fotunately, it only needs firmware updates to get the latest. You get a lot of functionality with this radio. What you don't get, you really don't need: Sattelite radio, disc-based anything, movies or videos. What you do get is Pandora or Spotify, your iPod music, Apple Navigation with Siri, Bluetooth audio and phone.

Pros: I had to call Crutchfield 4 times and had to email them another 6 more. Each time, they were knowlegable. This free tech support is great. The features are great too, at least compared to my old OEM system. It honestly lengthens the life of my car.

Cons: Bluetooth takes about 30 seconds to start. There is a logon banner when using the lightning cable, that you have to acknowledge each and every time. Why can't I just acknowledge it once, you it remembers? Installation took hours, so if you'd rather not spend the time, check the geek squad. The steering wheel integration adapter was a real pain to install.

First, Crutchfield technicians in Harrisonburg installed my Pioneer AppRadio 4, so I have no feedback as to the ease of self installation. Second, this unit looks as if it was factory installed by Subaru in my 2010 Legacy. It fits perfectly in my dash. And the coolness factor is definitely high! Third, if you have an iPhone (I have an iPhone 5s) this unit is a perfect fit for your car audio and communication needs. As the literature states it mirrors your phone: contacts, Pandora stations, texts, etc perfectly.

Pros: -Beautiful interface--just like your iPhone -Great sound and ability to customize the sound, even with the stock speakers in my car. There was no need for upgrade of speakers -Streams Pandora really well -Firmware updates via Pioneer's website make for easy upgrades to the unit

Cons: -Occasionally Siri does not read text replies and just repeats your previous sent text. This minor glitch may be a software issue -I wish the Pioneer unit would fade to black when not being used, similar to my iPhone and then wake up with a touch. --Although you can manually adjust the brightness, contrast, and dimmer features it would be nice if the brightness would automatically lower at night. -As with any touch screen device your finger prints will need to be wiped clean occasionally

Get Ahead of the Nav Game with this unit. Carplay is the future of driving, get in Early. I have a iPhone 6 and unfortunately all the Extra apps do not currently work, i'm sure a firmware update soon will fix that, but ALL the carplay features work, only other app I wanted was Waze, but since Apple maps finally works better, it's not really needed. What's awesome is that with the iPhone integration, I can hit maps and using my calendar, it already has the Destination of my Appointments, Spotify works great, Siri is great, reads out everything to you, just like it would your phone but everything is read to you instead, ask her stock prices, game scores, anything. Had a backup camera installed, my only issue was a local car stereo shop installed it wrong, I called Crutchfield for support, it's amazing how good their tech support is, I can't remember his name now, but the tech knew exactly what was wrong when I had a issue with all music working but not the phone audio, he knew that the speakers were connected wrong without me even telling him how they were connected. Also, Crutchfield knows exactly what you need with the stereo for your car, the right wiring harness, spacers if needed, extra gear like I needed to keep my steering wheel controls. On price, they don't cost more, but they offer soo much more, it's not worth risking buying from someone else. There is a reason this company has been around for soo long, I am most likely going to write a good review for the BBB

Pros: Carplay, Beautiful Screen, looks incredible,

Cons: Felt like that back fan/heatsink combo was getting pretty Hot, make sure no wires are touching it or blockage behind it, I think this thing gets a little hot.

    Excellent CarPlay unit

I installed this in a 2014 BRZ simply because I wanted a CarPlay unit. The installation was quite easy and it the fit is very good. Both the CarPlay and AppRadio are very easy to use with intuitive user interfaces. Audio is is very good with many nice customization controls.

    Very happy with the purchase.

Pros: CarPlay Easy to use Easy to install

Cons: Takes a bit too long to boot up.

I was just using the stereo for the CarPlay interface. It is the perfect solution. Simple interface with touch buttons gives it a modern, sleek look. The interface is also customizable. Customized the button colors as well as the splash screen.

As for sound quality. Music sounds great with the factory speakers. Would like to upgrade those next for the full effect. If you really want your SiriusXM radio, you may want to go the next Pioneer model up with CarPlay, this unit does not have built-in SiriusXM. Other than that I can't complain about anything.

Pros: - CarPlay - Customization - Sleek, modern look

    Cons: - No SiriusXM

    Excited until fit checked

I bought this from Pioneer direct and I was initially excited when I received my unit. I took it out of the box and was immediately a little let down. The build quality doesn't seem to be up to Pioneer's previous standards (i.e: NEX4000). The casing didn't seem as solid and the face plate seemed cheap. I expected more for the purchase price. There was also one more huge deal breaker (at least for my 2011 Dodge Nitro). The face of the radio (the chrome area on this unit where you would normally attach a trim ring or mount into a dash kit) is about 1/2 as deep as any other double din radio available. This resulted in large, unacceptable gaps when I fit checked the radio with my dash kit. I wound up requesting a return the same day This may not be an issue for others but I couldn't make it work and I wanted future buyers to be aware of it. I didn't even bother to unpack the wire harness and the other accessories because if it physically won't fit, it doesn't mater how well it works.

Pros: Apple CarPlay out of the box

Cons: Odd faceplate design with a shallower front panel than every other double din radio out there.

Apple CarPlay is compatible with Apple iPhone with Lightning-connector (iOS 7.1+). Your iPhone must be connected to the AppRadio's USB 1 port via the Lightning-cable that came with your Apple device or Pioneer's CD-IU52 Lightning Cable (sold separately). CarPlay supports Siri voice control and is specially designed for hands-free driving scenarios. It also works with the Pioneer head unit's touchscreen controls and offers functionality just like your iPhone with Lightning connector.

    • Maps: CarPlay delivers the power and simplicity of Apple Maps to your dashboard; complete with turn-by-turn direction, traffic conditions, and estimated travel time. You can enter a new destination or choose a favorite or recent destination using the head unit's touchscreen or by simply asking Siri. • Phone: CarPlay allows you to make and receive phone calls, as well as listen to voicemails from your connected iPhone through the Pioneer AppRadio 4. As soon as you tap the "Phone" icon, Siri will ask you who you want to call. You can also use the receiver's touchscreen to dial a phone number from its numeric keypad, or your Favorites, Recents, or Contacts. In addition, you get access to your voicemails. When a call comes in, simply tap the "Phone" icon to answer.
    • Messages: CarPlay also gives you access to your text messages through the receiver via Siri. Using Siri, you can send and reply to your text messages; so you never have to look at your iPhone while driving. Text messages cannot be read or typed from the head unit's touchscreen to prevent driver distraction.
    • Music Library: CarPlay lets you access your music in your iPhone's music library, plus iTunes radio from the AppRadio 4. You can browse your music by Playlist, Artist, Song, etc.. just like you would on your iPhone from the AppRadio 4's touchscreen. You can also use Siri to find and play back your music.
    • Now Playing: Tap the Now Playing icon on the AppRadio 4's touchscreen and see song, artist, album information with Album Art displaying in the background. Control them from the head unit's touchscreen or Siri just like you would from your iPhone. Current supported apps include Podcasts and Spotify (more supported Apps coming soon). Your iPhone's touchscreen remains unlocked during CarPlay connection, so you are able to access additional music apps and listen to them through the Pioneer receiver; however these apps offer no control or display information from the head unit's touchscreen.
    • Other Functions: Within the CarPlay's touchscreen menu is a circular icon which acts like the back button on your iPhone. In addition there is an "AppRadio" icon which exists CarPlay and takes you back to the AppRadio 4' Home Menu.

MirrorLink gives you a custom interface so you can access your music, map services, and your phone to make hands-free calls on-the-go. The Pioneer CD-MU200 MirrorLink Cable (130CDMU200, sold separately) is required to connect your MirrorLink-compatible smartphone (like the Samsung Galaxy S3, Note 4/Edge, Sony Xperia Z, or HTC One M8). Touchscreen & SWC

6.2" LCD Touchscreen Monitor: The front of the Pioneer AppRadio 4 features a clean & simple aesthetic look with only six physical buttons (Home, Volume up/down, Mode, Skip Previous/Next) combined with a high-resolution WVGA (800 x 480) 6.2" capacitive touchscreen display. This capacitive touchscreen requires less pressure, responds faster, and can recognize multiple touch points simultaneously; all advantages when compared to traditional resistive touchscreen displays. The AppRadio 4' 6.2" capacitive touchscreen offers touch, swipe, pinch, and zoom gestures. Touchscreen control is used for all functions including the AppRadio mode interface, CarPlay, MirrorLink, Pandora, AM/FM radio, and Bluetooth. All of the AppRadio 4's controls have been designed specifically for in-vehicle operation to promote a safe driving experience.

    • Favorites: You can register the desired menu items on the AppRadio 4's "Favorites" menu screen. Registering your favorite menu items allows you to quickly jump to the registered menu item by a simple touch on the favorites menu. Up to 12 menu items can be registered as a "Favorite".

The background display can be selected from 8 different preset displays for the AV Operation screen and 5 different preset displays for the Home Menu screen. In addition, you can change the background display to other images imported from an external USB device.
    • Widescreen Modes: You can choose from the following widescreen modes when playing back video - Full (4:3 picture is enlarged in the horizontal direction only; enabling you to enjoy a 4:3 picture without any omissions), Zoom (4:3 picture is enlarged in the same proportion both vertically and horizontally; ideal for a 16:9 screen), Normal (4:3 picture is displayed as it is).
    • Picture Adjustments: You can store numerous video settings for the head unit's video source and rear-view camera; including brightness (adjusts the black intensity), contrast (adjusts contrast) color (adjusts color saturation), temperature (adjust the color temperature), and Dimmer (adjusts brightness).
    • Dimmer: To prevent the display from being too bright at night, the display is automatically dimmed when the car's headlights are turned on. The automatic dimmer function only works when the orange/white illumination wire in the wiring harness is connected to the vehicle's headlight circuit.
Note: The unit offers English, Chinese, French, Portuguese, and Spanish text.

Front-Panel Control w/ Custom Illumination: In addition to the touchscreen controls, the unit includes frequently used touch-sensitive buttons along the left edge of the screen. You can also create a custom color to match your vehicle's interior lighting (112 colors to choose from).

MIXTRAX Illumination: MIXTRAX features a club-style illumination that enhances the mood with a dynamic dance club-like lighting effect. As MIXTRAX begins, lights start pulsing to the beat of the music, adding an extra level of entertainment. You can choose among twelve patterns of lighting variations from sound pressure level or low-pass synchronization modes. The lighting effects work like a spectrum analyzer, reaching peak colors based on the intensity of the music.

Pass-Code Security: You can create a 5 to 16 character password that must be entered if the head unit is disconnected from power.

Parking Brake Interlock: This unit has a parking brake interlock system that prohibits viewing of video programming and operating certain controls when the vehicle is in motion. In order to watch video on the in-dash monitor, the vehicle must be stopped with the parking brake engaged. The head unit's light green wire must be connected to your vehicle's parking brake detection circuit. The head unit's touchscreen will display "Attention! Viewing of front seat video source while driving is strictly prohibited", if you try to watch a video when your vehicle is in motion.

2-DIN Chassis: The Pioneer AppRadio 4 has a 2-DIN chassis (also known as "Double DIN" or size DD), and will fit in many vehicles with a large dash opening. The unit can be ISO-mounted using factory brackets. There is also an optional double-DIN sleeve (130ADTV133, sold separately) available for this unit that will allow you to Euro-mount or custom mount the Pioneer head unit in your vehicle. As always, please consult Crutchfield's Outfit My Car to verify fit with your vehicle.

Note: The power specifications for the AppRadio 4 are compliant with the CEA2006 Mobile Amplifier Power Testing and Measurement standards from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). These standards were developed as a way to equitably compare power specs from model to model and between manufacturers.

4V/6CH Preamp Outputs + Sub Control: The Pioneer AppRadio 4 features three pair of 4.0-volt preamp outputs (Front/Rear/Subwoofer). The unit's front and rear preamp output can be faded (front/rear), while the subwoofer preamp output is non-fading. The Pioneer AppRadio 4 lets you adjust the subwoofer preamp output's phase (normal/reverse) and volume (+6 to -24).

Crossovers: The AppRadio 4 employs high pass and low pass crossovers to tailor the head unit to your connected speakers.

    • HPF: The head unit's 12dB/octave high pass filter only allows frequencies higher than those in the selected range (50, 63, 80, 100, 125Hz) to your front and rear speakers through the unit's speaker-level or line-level outputs.
    • LPF: The subwoofer preamp output features an18dB/octave low pass filter so only frequencies lower than those in the selected range (50, 63, 80, 100, 125Hz) are output to your connected subwoofer.

EEQ (Easy EQ) w/ 13-Band Graphic EQ: There are seven stored equalizer curves which you can easily recall at any time. You can choose from - Powerful, Natural, Vocal, Super Bass, Flat, Custom 1, or Custom 2. The Custom 1 and Custom 2 EQ modes allow you to manually adjust the level (+/- 12dB) of each band of the head unit's 13-band graphic equalizer (50, 80, 125, 200, 315, 500, 800, 1.25k, 2k, 3.15k, 5k, 8k, and 12.5k Hz).

Auto EQ (Optional): The auto-equalizer automatically measures your car's interior acoustic characteristics, and then creates an auto-equalizer curve base on that information. The Pioneer CD-MC20 Auto-EQ microphone (130CDMC20, sold separately) is required to use this function. The Pioneer CD-MC20 Auto-EQ microphone plugs into your compatible Pioneer A/V receiver's rear-panel AUX 3.5mm input. The Auto-EQ microphone should be placed in the center of your vehicle's driver seat headrest facing forward for EQ measurement.

Audio Settings: The head unit provides further sound adjustments for your car audio system.

    • Listening Position & Time Alignment: For a better sound-stage you can select your optimal listening position. You can choose from All, Front Left, Front Right, or Front. You can also select to manually fine tune the sound stage, using Digital Time Alignment (DTA) by selecting the distance (0-200") for each individual speaker in the vehicle compared to your listening position.
    • Advanced Sound Retriever: The Advanced Sound Retriever automatically enhances compressed audio and restores the original richness of the recording. When the Advanced Sound Retriever is on, the high frequency range is compensated to match the frequency response curve to the original sound. There are two available levels of the Advanced Sound Retriever effect.
    • Source Level Adjustment (SLA): This function lets you adjust the volume level of each source (AM, Pandora, iPod, Apps) to prevent radical changes in volume when switching between sources. Settings are based on the unit's FM volume level, which remains unchanged. Each source can be independently adjusted from -4 dB to +4 dB.

MIXTRAX: Drawing from Pioneer's rich DJ heritage and passion for music, MIXTRAX delivers a unique DJ infused listening experience to listeners in the car. MIXTRAX is an innovative Pioneer technology that creates a non-stop mix of your music library complete with a range of DJ-inspired effects. MIXTRAX takes your typical music listening experience and creates a non-stop mix of your music with 9 random DJ effects and transitions, by removing the breaks and pauses normally introduced between tracks and replacing them with various beats. MIXTRAX is compatible with USB-connected iPhone, iPod, USB MSC device, and select Android devices. There is also a Short Playback option which limits the amount of time each track plays; select from 1, 1.5, 2, 2.5, or 3 minutes.

AV Output (w/ Dual Zone): The unit features a composite video jack and 3.5mm audio jack to output A/V signals to an optional monitor and headphone system. You can simultaneously enjoy the same or different sources in the front and rear of your vehicle. The unit's A/V output can be set to Mirror, AV-IN, USB, iPod, or Off. The Mirror mode simply outputs the same audio/video signal which is playing on the head unit's touchscreen monitor to your connected rear monitor/headphone system.

HDMI Input: In addition to AppRadio mode for iPhone and Android, the receiver's HDMI input can be used to connect almost any external mobile AV source with an HDMI output; such as a TV tuner, Blu-ray player, or game system. The HDMI input will provide video and audio playback. Your vehicle's parking brake will need to be engaged to view video on the receiver's screen. Playback functions will need to be controlled from your HDMI-connected device (not the Pioneer head unit).

Rear View Camera: The AppRadio 4 is equipped with a composite video Rear View Camera input to connecting an optional rear-view camera, like Pioneer's ND-BC6 (130NDBC6, sold separately).

    • Auto Reverse Switching: The unit features a function that automatically switches to the rear camera image when an optional rear camera is installed. When the transmission is in reverse, the screen automatically switches to the rear view camera (the reverse wire in the included harness must be connected to the vehicle's reverse lamp circuit for automatic video switching). Automatic video switching takes approximately 1.1 seconds.
    • Guidelines: The unit also provides four on-screen guidelines to assist you when backing up your vehicle.
    • Towing: You can even select for the rear-view camera to stay on at all times, so you can keep an eye on the trailer you are towing.
