Pioneer 6 1/2 speakers

Pros: Good mids and highs

Cons: No lows

6 by .5 fronts

Written By Soaupplysa, Dallas,Tx on Tuesday, January 30, 2007

Ive always been crazy about pioneer front speakers. These speakers are great when you have a good 6 by 9s on your rear.

Thanks to best buy, they fitted me with infinity 6 by .5s on my rear aswell, instead of the 6 by 9s that i bought. Why? cause they dont modify. **** BB dont go there for installation

Result : Lack of bass all round.

Dont expect huge bass from these, cause the bass comes from 6 by 9s from rear or subs. These simply provide clarity and a little thud saying it works.

4/5 cause the highs crack @ high volumes.

HU : pioneer deh 3800

no amp yet.

Major loss of bass!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I'm by no means a stereo expert. I installed these in the front doors of a crew cab Chevrolet truck on an otherwise stock stereo. I expected it to be at least as good as the stock speakers (one was blown). What little bass the stock speakers have is GONE. Voices and high notes sound slightly more clear, but the total lack of bass is disappointing.

I played the same songs right before and after the install to compare.

I wish I had just replaced the one blown speaker with a factory replacement now. Live and learn I guess.

Great speakers!!!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I just received my pair of Pioneer TS-A1671R speakers right on time and installed them in the rear of my crx which did not have speakers back there from the factory. I must say these are awesome sounding speakers right from my Pioneer head unit. Its a pretty good quality head unit, but nonetheless not powered by an amp yet. They put out great midrange, pretty good bass, and good highs. I could turn it up so loud it was starting to hurt my ears without getting distorted, Overall awesome sounding!!! I also installed baffles to make sure it wasnt open air so that improved the midrange/bass a bit. But in conclusion these are amazing sounding speakers for the price, i cant wait to plug an amp into them and get even more crisp mid's. Thanks Crutchfield I will always get my car audio through you.

Small speaker BIG punch

Written By Marc, North Jersey on Friday, December 01, 2006

I'm running these speakers on a 1995 GMC Jimmy in the front doors (no adapter plate needed) with an older Aiwa head unit (45x4 max) and I am impressed with these speakers. Yeah they won't rattle your brain with bass but the mids and highs are real clear and they put out just as much if not more bass than my stock 6x9s in the back. Definitely worth the upgrade from stock speakers.

Great Value!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought these speakers to replace the stock speakers in my Stratus. The speakers were very easy to install and sound fantastic. I installed a Kenwood HU (532U)at the same time and the total package works great together! I was looking for a good HU w/ good speakers to match and I am very satisfied with these speakers the new features of the HU.

Sounds good in 2000 Durango

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

They have pretty good sound and the bass isnt bad for the size they are.. I would recommend that you dont run them with a stock head unit cause thats what I did when i first got them and they sounded pretty bad.. When I put in my Sony head unit I noticed a huge difference.. For anyone that is inexperienced with installing speakers like me, you have to use the spacers that are attached to the stock speakers in a Durango or ur windows won't be able to go down all the way..

Great Valie

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These speakers are a great value. The install was simple and the sound is clear. I paired them up with the 6x9 version of these and they sound great. I have the Dual 220 head unit and it only puts out 17 watts butt they sound great. I used the baffels to increase bass response although you can only get so much bass from a 6 inch speaker. The highs and lows are great.

good with a couple add-ins

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have not been too impressed with Pioneer in the past, but I have never really done anything fancy with them before. In the past, I just put them in the factory speaker mounts and let the head unit power them as best possible. This time, in my '92 Paseo, I put this pair in the rear deck and a 2-way 4" pair of Pioneers in the front doors with foam bafflers and bass blockers on both pairs. I knew that the bass would distort a little at high volumes from my head unit if I didn't use the bass blockers. I have a couple of 10's in the trunk, so I don't need much bass output from them anyway. Once installed, I was very impressed. I can turn them up louder than I can stand without any distortion in the bass, mid, and high range. I would recommend going with this setup if you purchase these speakers to run just off your head unit. They compliment the subs very nice. You can get the bass blockers and foam bafflers from Crutchfield as well. They were very helpful in my purchasing process.

Ehh not so hott

Written By session, Cherry Hill NJ on Thursday, December 29, 2005

Yeh i just bought these for the front doors of my 95 Chysler Cirrus. I purchased the car with an amp already installed so the stock speakers sounded decent. I recently replaced the Rear Decks wit 6x9 Infinty Refrences which were incredible. Pioneer has always made a good name for itself, and I liked the idea of 3 way speakers in the doors. However, Pioneer dissapointed me. Speakers are so so, the tweeters sound decent but don't be fooled, Infinty 2 ways out perform these by a mile. And the bass on these, well, I know that im comparing them to 6x9s but I know these should handle better. Flat out very early. But Im a guy whos very easily pleased and overall these will stay in my doors.

My advice, purchase the Infity Refernence 6 1/2". I know they are 2 ways, but they outperform in highs, mids, and they destroy the pioneers in lows.

good for the money

Written By David, MA on Saturday, December 03, 2005

I agree with whoever said you can't expect much bass from all-arounds. I think you get what you pay for too.

I'm very pleased with these speakers in my 1990 Honda Accord. I put a pair in the rear deck and left the front stock. The highs and bass are a large improvement from the factory.

The only negative thing i found with these was the distortion i hear at high levels with just the head unit. I fixed this with a 4channel amp, and then i decided to add a sub to get those low tones i wanted. They mix in perfectly with the 8" sub, even though the tweeters are soft.

Do your reasearch

Speakers are very good. I have them in an '01 Silverado. 3 ways make a difference over 2 ways.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased a pair of 1671R's for my 2005 Chevy Colorado. They provide clear mids & highs, but when you really crack them they can get a little distorted. My truck only has 2 factory bays for speakers, so I'm sure a set of 4 would make a huge difference (I'm already planning on integrating 2 more when I build the sub & amp box).

Bass is pretty good, but I never expect much from door speakers. If you want real bass get some subs to complete the package. Don't complain because you don't feel yourself vibrating from a set of 6.5" speakers.

As with ANY aftermarket speaker the base never sounds quite as good as those paper cones you remove (it's amazing what a $2 speaker can do, too bad the highs and mids are all muddy). It's hard to get good base in a "free air" setup. This is mainly due to the lack of packing in the door.

I did get better base by doing 2 things. 1) I took the speakers back out, removed the factory plastic backing/baffles (sort of super glued to the back of the OEM Colorado speaker), and put the baffles on the new pioneers. I guess this sort of cuts down on the "free air" effect. And 2) I put a sound dampening mat around the speakers.

Crutchfield is the best! Some people say they can be a little pricey at times, but when you figure in all the free adapters they give you and the time you save sorting through wiring diagrams, splicing, and crimping wires it's well worth it. Plus 9 times out of 10 they'll have some type of deal that will make them have the best price (Free shipping, $20 off with purchase of CD receiver, %15 off when you buy from 3 categories, etc.) [EDITOR'S NOTE: This promotion has since ended]

very very very good choice

anybody who said this speaker is a bad investment is retarded. these speakers kick @$$. awesome for the price. good quality sound.

Great overall!

Written By Chris, Louisville, KY on Tuesday, July 19, 2005

I recently purchased 2 pairs of these speakers. They are being powered just by the 22wrms of my Pioneer Premier 470 head unit. They get so loud and clear it hurts my ears almost worse than the subwoofers. Great speaker for the price, highly reccommended

Terrible, Bad Investment

Written By Bernie, Penns Grove, NJ on Friday, May 06, 2005

I have four of these speakers front and back. They are terrible. Yes, they handle power without distortion when increasing the volume but the sound quality is awful. Bass is nonexistent, Mids-below average, Highs-average. I'm going to add an amp to see if any improvement in sound quality. Using just the head unit is worthless.

Not that impressed

Written By James, California on Sunday, April 10, 2005

So, I decided to upgrade my door speakers in my 2-door Civic and decided on these guys. The install was easy and within a few minutes I was done. Cranked up the music (22x4 RMS Pioneer) and the difference between my stock setup and the setup with the Pioneer's was minimal. The highs sounded a bit better, adding to my factory tweeter, but the mids/bass was about as good as the factory I ripped out.

Think next time I'll go the complete component route, but wanted a quick and cheap upgrade since I'll probably be selling the car in a year.

These were nice to hear after my factory speakers. They are running now off of an alpine cda-9833 and sound great.
they have crisp trebble and a deep full bass tone when the volume is up loud, but only provide good mids at lower levels.

Had a pair of these mounted in my '96 Lumina running off of a Pioneer P8200R head unit. They weren't meant to fit this car, but with removal of the speaker mounts in the doors and a little improvization, I got 'em in. They did pretty well on mid-range and had crisp highs. Great for the money!

Woofers: Each speaker features an interlaced dual Aramid fiber-reinforced IMPP (Injection Molded Polypropylene) cone woofer. With long Aramid fibers interlacing together inside, this IMPP cone design provides the strength and rigidity powerful bass sound requires. The high-density, compressed internal architecture is resilient, stacks up against high power and transfers sound very quickly. The result is full-bodied, rich sound.

Surrounds: For durability and a smoother response, each woofer uses a butyl rubber surround.

Midranges: Each speaker has a 1-5/8" laminated polyester fiber balanced-dome midrange for fast, accurate response with low distortion.

Tweeters: Each speaker uses a 3/8" PET silver film dome tweeter for crisp, clear highs.

Mounting: The speakers can be mounted in a 6-1/2" opening, or, using the four mounting tabs, the speakers can be mounted in a 6-3/4" opening.
