Our take on the Pioneer TS-A6871R

by Ken Nail
Pioneer

Pioneer's A Series speakers have what it takes to rev up the excitement in your system's sound, thanks to a potent combination of high power handling and accurate sound reproduction.

The TS-A6871R 6"x8" speaker sports a polyester dome tweeter for comprehensive high-frequency coverage that's smooth as glass, while a polyester fiber midrange speaker ensures the vocals have realistic warmth and texture. Pioneer reinforces the woofer cone with Aramid fibers for strength and couples it to a butyl rubber surround for standout bass and long-term speaker life.

The TS-A6871R speakers fit perfectly in many Ford and Mazda vehicles — no adapter ring is required.

Features

Woofers: Each speaker features an interlaced Aramid fiber-reinforced IMPP (Injection Molded Polypropylene) cone woofer. With long Aramid fibers interlacing together inside, this IMPP cone design provides the strength and rigidity powerful bass notes require. The high-density compressed internal architecture is resilient and stands up to high power, transferring sound very quickly. The result is full-bodied, rich sound.

Midranges: Each speaker uses a 1-5/8" polyester balanced dome midrange with magnetic fluid and a neodymium magnet.

Tweeters: Each speaker uses a 3/8" polyester soft dome tweeter for crisp, clear highs.

Surrounds: For durability and a smoother response, each speaker uses a butyl rubber surround.

Pretty bad

Written By Chris, Cleveland,TN on Monday, January 31, 2011

Bought these to replace my factory speakers in an ex-cvpi,after I managed to
kill the stock speakers.

Took me about 30 minutes of install time to get them in,and after testing
them,it was "lacking". While the mid's and high's sound great, when you turn it
up to any reasonable volume with a song that has bass in it,all you get is
distortion. As in stock speakers put these to shame. In an old cop car. I hope
I'm getting the point through.

Only good thing is the warranty on them.

Horrible

Written By Jared, Buffalo, NY on Friday, November 23, 2007

When I was looking for new speaker to replace my factory ones I looked around the site for a good pair, for both front and back, in my 99 ford ranger. I found these and read the reviews and then bought them thinking that they were gonna sound great. I was truly dissapointed when I put these into the front door of my truck.

They sounded very distant and there was absolutaly no bass. I will have to say that the highs were very nice but if you turn these speakers to any kind of loudness they sound terrible so even putting in a sub you wouldn't be able to listen to it loud.

I also about a pair if Sony XS-V680HP speakers to replace the rear speakers. I would reccomend these Sony speakers to anyone looking to buy them. I am replacing the pioneers with the sonys as soon as my return gets filled.

Also, if it matter at all, I have an Apline CDA-9883. (really nice)

Great!

Written By Tyler, Baton Rouge, LA on Saturday, October 27, 2007

I've been researching these speakers a lot lately, mainly because of the good reviews and the low price.

The speakers sound GREAT! I had trouble removing my door panels without the usual instructions that you recieve from ordering from Crutchfield, so the installation took me a good 2-3 hours. After I put each speaker in I reconnected my battery to make sure it worked properly, and the speakers sounded really low and soft compared to my factories, but after I put the 4th speaker in my Ford f-150 I hopped in and turned it up. I was incredibly awed by the clarity for some cheap Pioneers, they really make my factories sound like garbage. I would definitly buy these speakers again.

Better than factory

Written By Pete, Colorado on Sunday, August 12, 2007
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These speakers were replacements of Pioneers 6x8 2 way speakers (TS-G6841R). They are a big improvement over both the factory speakers and the model listed above. They still aren't "steallar" speakers, but sound good compared to others. They are a good priced speaker to upgrade your factory ones without breaking the bank. Lows are improved quite well, and highs are very bright. If you are looking for budget speakers, spend the extra money and get these over the base Pioneer model.

Early 2000 Toy Tacoma Xtra cab owners - get ready to take apart most of the back seat panels! Install instructions from Crutchfield were very good, but alot of work, especially when I had to replace the speakers again to pull the first set put in!

First time Crutchfield user - would use again. They did a good job, and didn't give any problems about returning set that I didn't care for. Prices are fair, and technical support was knowledgable, and really wanted to help.

Below Expectations

Written By jeff, Arlington, TX on Saturday, May 12, 2007
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed these speakers in the front of my 2006 Grand Marquis, replacing the factory units. After a week, I put the factories back in.

The Pioneers did have some advantages such as lower lows, cleaner highs and superior imaging, but they also had some distinct disadvantages. Music sounded dull and lifeless if the mid frequency response on my head unit's equalizer was increased, and speech sounded like it was coming from the bottom of a well. If I decreased the mid response, and moved the bass and treble center frequencies out, speech/voice performance improved, but then the music sounded thin.

I tried everything I could think of to see what might be wrong with my new Pioneer speakers. I isolated left/right and front/back as a quick check to see if something was reverse polarized. I used a test tone CD to check for holes across the frequency range. And, I tried a huge array of equalizer adjustments, all to no avail. No matter what I did, music on the Pioneers sounded, at best, like music on the radio. Music on my factory speakers always sounded like it was being performed in the car.

While these Pioneers aren't horrible speakers, they just didn't meet my expectations.

Got 2 pair of these for a 98 Ford F-150 extended cab. Paired up with a Sony CDX-GT510 HU. They sound great, much better than the stock speakers, better bass and crisper highs.

Excellent value for a 3-way speaker in this price range.

I have a 2007 F150 and wanted improved audio quality without replacing the entire sound system. I replaced the stock speakers with the Pioneer TS-A6871R's and noticed dramatic improvement immediately. The bass was much less muddied, and the mids and highs were much more clear and distinct. I am pleased to get such range from such a simple setup. These speakers are a great choice if you plan to keep the factory head unit.

I upgraded some Clarions that were about 6 years old to these. They perform well on low and high volume levels. I listen to rock, hiphop, and even jazz and each sound great. Plenty of thump for some 6x8s and all the highs and whatnot sounds great.

Replaced my factory speakers with these in a 2005 Mustang. Sound difference is quite signifigant in the highs. Good amount of bass is increased as well. Only thing I noticed is I need to raise the decibles more to equate the same amount of sound with the factory speakers.

Great For the Price

Written By wes, Conway, AR on Wednesday, December 27, 2006

MY SETUP:
2001 Toyota Tacoma Ext Cab SR5 TRD
Kenwood Excelon KDC-X790
Pioneer TS-A6871R (in doors and rear panel)
Factory door tweeters
Alpine MRP-F250 (under driver seat)
Kenwood KSC-SW1 (under passenger seat)
Dynamat Extreme (100 sq ft - floors, doors, & panels)

MY THOUGHTS:
Came together beautifully. GET THE DYNAMAT! Believe it or not, it is the foundation for all else; works amazingly well! Road noise is dramatically decreased. The 6x8's are loving the amp! Great bass response and super-crisp highs, although too powerful of mids can muddy up the music, so adjust as necessary. The amp is super-clean and gets those 6x8's LOUD! Often too loud for my liking, so the gain stays at half. The sub mounted perfectly under the seat and was CRITICAL for balance. It outperforms what I hoped for without upsetting the neighbors. Sometimes strains with rap, hiphop, techno, etc., but performs very well with all else. Finally, the head unit is loaded with options, including mp3 player input - 'nuff said.

If I could do it all again, I think I'd do components in the doors for add'l bass response and the tweeter upgrade (and may end up anyway). But, all-in-all, I am VERY pleased with this setup. 15+ hours of install, but completely worth it. People can't believe how great my truck sounds, and better yet: they can't see a thing! Stealth rules.

Thanks Crutchfield for all your goodies and your help!

I bought these for my mustang and they went in the front doors easy. They sound good at lower volumes but when loud they dont sound clean. The bass is ok but what do expect from a 6x8. The highs are good mids average overall i would purchase the speakers again for my applacation but, if you want a great 6x8 then go Infinity or Kicker.

great speaker, low $$$$$

Written By John, Columbus, Mi. on Wednesday, October 11, 2006

First I have to say that crutchfield has been great! I have been a long time customer, and everybody is so friendly and helpful. Now cut to the chase; I have a Y2K ford ranger and I installed a kenwood H.U.(22 watts of power) and replaced the stock speakers with the pioneer TS-A6871R s. I listen to alot of hard rock and metal also some hip-hop and pop music, and I was blown away on the highs, mids and even the bass compared to the stockers. Keep in mind they're 6X8" speakers; don't expect subwoofer bass out of them. I have tried alot of speakers out there and the pioneers are among the best sound and quality for the $$$. I had the speakers installed in under 45 min. Thanks again, pioneer and crutchfield.

Outstanding value!

Written By Mike, Kansas City on Tuesday, October 03, 2006
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought these for the front doors on my '98 F-150. The driver's side OEM speaker had begun to distort. This is a nice truck, used mostly as a daily commuter, but it's still a truck - not an ideal "listening environment." I wanted something nice, hopefully a little nicer than stock, but I wanted to stick with the factory head unit and didn't want to mess with amps, etc. Just nice sound for the environment described.

These speakers are perfect. My initial impression was that they sounded no different from the stock speakers. But after driving with them for a few minutes I began to realize that the highs were more distinct and the lows were cleaner. I was able to adjust treble up a few notches and bass down a couple to improve the sound, whereas the best I could accomplish previously was to put them both in the center. The sound is tremendous for a stock setup. I now hear nuances in soft vocals, for example, that I've never heard in the 9 years I've owned this truck.

Crutchfield included clear instructions on how to take the door trim apart.

I also used a sheet of Dynamat in each door, but note that in this generation of F-150 it probably isn't necessary - the vapor barrier in the doors is a thick plasticized sheet and I doubt the Dynamat is doing anything beyond what the barrier would be doing alone (although I'm sure it doesn't hurt).

I'm thrilled with them. The relatively low price is only a bonus.

excellent speakers

Written By Keith, Gainesville, FL on Tuesday, August 08, 2006

I got these to replace the rear factory speakers in my 04 Ranger. I already had an Alpine head unit. I am very impressed by how much quality sound I can get out of the head unit with these speakers. The highs and mids are clear, and it puts out a decent amount of bass for the size (don't expect them to be subwoofers). I also purchases a set of the 4-way version to replace the front speakers. They, of course, have crisper high-mids.

I've always heard that oval speakers are inferior to round speakers, but I cannot imagine that a round speaker of comparable size could sound any better than these!

I can't give these speakers a 5 out of 5 because they would need to be much more expensive. You get a great deal with these speakers; well made, good looks, and nice range of freqs. I have an aftermarket JVC headunit, and two subs for my bass, so these speakers along with the subs and headunit make a complete well rounded package.

I had never installed speakers before, but these were so easy to do, it took about 30 minutes for me to get them in.
They sound great! I don't know how else to describe it, but they give a great, full sound, and decent bass. I was surprised that these little speakers would sound that good.

I replaced all 4 of my door speakers in my Mazda with these and they sound far better than the stock speakers that the car came with. They have great mids and highs and I am running them off the factory deck. There is no doubt that these speakers would sound far better with an aftermarket deck and/or an external amp.

Great sounding speakers. Installed without a problem in my '03 Ford Focus ZX5, in both the front and rear. This was my first speaker upgrade, and I didn't run into any snags. After reading some other reviews, I was nervous that the it would be lacking bass... luckily, they produce more than enough to satisfy me. A huge improvement over the stock equipment.

I replaced all 4 of my stock speakers in my 1999 Taurus with these and also with a Pannasonic HU. They were loud, clear, and had good bass on the HU power. I now have them hooked up to a nice Pioneer 60W RMS Amp and these things hit highs great and have even more bass. Anyone that is looking to improve the sound in their car that fits 6x8s, I would reccomend these.

If I could give them zero stars I would. I've never liked Pioneer, but I decided to give these speakers a shot. Well, that was a mistake. I put 4 of these in my 2000 Ranger, and they are terrible speakers. The sound quality is aweful. I don't know, maybe they need to be amped to sound good. I bought the Kicker DS68 to replace these.

Nice sound, - install tips for Ford Ranger owners

Written By Graham, MA on Tuesday, May 09, 2006
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Purchased 4 of these to replace the factory 6x8s in a '02 Ford Ranger Reg. Cab. They are a vast improvement over the factory originals, especaily after installing a Kenwood KDC-MP5032 head unit to drive them. I agree with the previous poster about them sounding better with the high pass filter enabled (40 Hz to only rears in this application).

For you 02 Ford Ranger owners out there, these speakers drop right in. I have a few install tips: I found that the screws that hold the factory rear speakers to the grills will not fit with these speakers. I bought nylon spacers (1/4" long) and used them, along with the included sheet metal screws, to install.

Use sound dampening material for the doors. I laid in a 10" x 10" square over the speaker hole and then cut out the hole for the speaker (the material that was cut out can then be laid in behind the rear speakers to prevent the magnet from hitting the cab's rear wall). This eliminated about 80% of rattles in the door. Also, mount in the door so that the tweeter is on the top and use the included sheet metal screws. Do not use the factory screws for the doors, as they have a small washer that gets caught up in the trim around the speakers.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed these speakers in the front doors of my 99 superduty. Very simple and easy to do with the included instructions and wiring adapters. They fit perfectly in the factory location. No shimming, cutting or other modifications needed. The install time was well under 30 minutes.

I have the stock single CD/radio in the truck. These speakers are such a huge improvement over the factory ones that I can't imagine anybody not loving them. I am thrilled with the sound now. For me, I see no need to replace the rear speakers, or the factory radio. The stereo sounds great now and I retained the factory look (no thief bait). For cost, ease of install, and outstanding sound quality they have earned my 5 star rating.

Excellent full-range voice good bass and clear bright highs

Written By Steve Devine, Caribou, ME on Friday, May 05, 2006
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The speakers are excellent... more than I was expecting. The bass is pleasantly deep and string, excellent sound through the mids up to clear and bright highs.

These are connected direct to Pioneer 3800 head unit (purchased at same time). The bass seemed to actually sound a bit deeper and clearer with the 50 Hz High Pass Filter enabled, perhaps because some of the deep bass in some of the songs (diverse mix of rap, hip-hop, R&B, dance) cannot be reproduces by these drivers.

Still and all, nice clean deep sound all through the range specified, and pleasantly loud driven by 22W RMS from the deck.

Disappointed

I replaced my front door speakers in my 2006 Ford Ranger with the Pioneer. The Ford speakers represented the frequency range clearer than the Pioneer. The Pioneer speakers lacked "life". The bass response was not as defined (no real punch) and sounded muddy. I put one of the Ford speakers back in and compared the two. The Ford sounded much better, not great though. I was not using an amp but I do not think that would have mattered. My Sony cd player puts out 22w rms. In my past vehicles I have used Infinity kappa speakers which I really like. I was trying to save money with Pioneer. I returned the Pioneers and ordered Infinity Kappa 682.7cf.

Great Upgrade

Written By Steve, Phoenix AZ on Tuesday, April 18, 2006
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Talked with CSR Pete and he suggested four of these for my '05 F-150 Super Cab with the audiophile system. I wired in the factory tweeters in the front doors with the new Pioneers. Then I found out I did have the factory sub in the back. The salesman told me it had electronic ecm's and stuff in it. Anyhow, the front doors had 3 1/2" speakers which is stupid when the opening holds the 6 x 8 speakers. FORD???? Well back to the install. Great instructions on how the door panels and things come apart so you don't end up breaking anything and it was very easy. No problems and the upgrade is well worth it. Bass hits hard and clear and the highs are there too. For a stock factory system this was a great choice for speaker replacement. Good sound at upper volume levels and the rear view mirror now has a shake to it with the bass. This was a very good purchase and for a system not made to bend sheet metal with bass, these speakers are it.You won't be dis-appointed. Thanks Pete and Crutchfield. This is why I shop here. Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Got a set of 4 for my 03 Full Size Mercury. Improved the bass response of my factory sub and I get louder clearer volume.
Nothing like Toby Keith at full volume!!!
These speakers get my oakaly-doakaly for sure.

I puchased a pair of pioneers tsa 3ways and a pair of 4ways. The best decision i ever made. I have a mustang i put the 3ways in back and 4ways in front and there great i can pull up to kids at school with subs etc and i slap harder then them. I am amazed at the sound quality i got from these speakers. And im telling the truth no bs.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Just put a set of these in the front doors of my Ranger extended cab. Sound is AWESOME. With balance about 75% front and 25% to rear factory speakers, the sound is clear and full - and this is with the factory CD. Highly recommended. Installation took about 5 minutes per speaker. The included instructions are great and the furnished wiring harness fit perfectly.
