Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Purchased these Pioneer TS-G1644R Speakers to replace the factory door speakers in my '98 Camry. The old speakers seemed fine so I wasn't expecting much of a difference but I am thoroughly impressed with the way these speakers deliver. A noticeable upgrade with much more powerful and crisp sound. Well worth the price and installation was straightforward. Crutchfield does it again!

Pros: Great mid-range distinction - more power than the factory speakers.

Cons: None - very pleased with my purchase.

Fresh Sound in 07 Forester

Written by: Jan from SLC, Utah on March 30, 2015

2007 Subaru Forester
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great bang for buck if your trying to improve the audio of your stock system. I learned that Subaru sound systems are the cheapest out and you can improve the quality of sound greatly by buying a pair of speakers just for the front 2 spots, even if they are on the cheaper end. I also have a Pioneer head unit so the combined power made a huge difference from the bone stock system. I simply drilled new holes for the speakers and installed them. Make Sure To Do Your Installation With Your Windows Down. This was the only real issue I had "post-install". I had connectivity problems after the first time I did it because the window was pulling the wires all over the place. Plug and play installation with the harnesses Crutchfield provides which was great! A common theme on here is the speakers not putting out enough bass. Compared to stock Suby sound this was an improvement in all audio categories: bass, mids and highs. If you want your car to rattle, man up and get a sub. These speakers will provide clear, crisp sound when cruising on the highway at 75 mph with the windows down. I also Did Not purchase baffles for the back of the speakers, it seemed like the inside of my doors didn't really get penetrated with water or debris, this may be different for your car, but that is all the baffles will do for you, They Will Not Improve Sound Quality. So that may save you some extra money. If you're 'ballin on a budget' these are the speakers for you.

Pros: Low cost, clear sound at high levels, easy install, Crutchfield provides harnesses

Cons: Can't complain with a price like that.

Probably best speakers for this price range

Written by: Slugbait from Washington on March 22, 2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Went to a national chain store, which had this model, so I could compare before committing. Other speakers they had under $100/pair had very bad balance between bass/mid/treble, these speakers had at least adequate balance. A lot of people reviewing these speakers complain about a lack of bass, but to get as much bass (or more) as these Pioneers, I would have to move up to the cheapest set of Focal speakers (well over $100/pair). I was especially surprised that more expensive Kickers and Quinn had Less bass than these Pioneers. Of course, the speakers were all mounted in the wall, but I made sure these was no outboard amp enabled, and no sub, and used the same head unit for all comparisons. I was quite impressed by the sound quality at this price. I bought two pairs for my wife's 2000 Rav4. Since I would have all the interior panels off, I took the opportunity to Dynamat in the areas directly behind the speakers and also the first couple of inches (back and front) of the mounting area metal. Once installed, they sounded VERY good...until we got on the road. Above 40mph, the road noise makes sure that all we really hear is the bass. Need to set the head unit's loudness to "low" to hear other instruments while driving. There's just too much bass otherwise when road noise kicks in...really glad I used all that Dynamat, pretty sure it helped. Also went with a new Pioneer head unit (X7600HD). I can finally hear the speakers from the back cargo area!

Pros: Good balance between bass/mid/treble and very good bass for this price, Dynamat can improve it a little more. Install PDFs from Crutchfield were perfect, I would have broken something without them.

Cons:

Replaced 1 ohm 8" Bose double speakers in both doors eliminating separate tweeters. These 4 ohm speakers are mounted on a masonite ring to fit in existing spot, connected to original wiring with crimp splices. Results are superior sound. Great!

Pros: Replacement for paper speakers which were rubbing coil to armature - awful distortion.. The impedance match not a problem and operates with the existing front and rear speakers carrying a nice balance and volume level at about 1 point in 30 total range higher.

1999 Suzuki Esteem
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Compared to my blown factory speakers, these are a huge upgrade. Overall, nothing too special though. Highs and mids are relatively clear. It took a lot of EQ adjustments on my head unit to make the bass sound decent. Basically, I minimized all the bass settings. The lack of bass is probably due to these speakers being so shallow. They were one of the few that fit my Suzuki. And they fit PERFECTLY, just like Crutchfield said they would. The new speaker even used the factory mounting holes, no drilling required.

These speakers are nothing special, but for the price I paid, I am very happy. With a crossover and a decent sub, they could be part of a pretty solid system. Guitars seem to sound especially good on these speakers. Most rap music sounds bad because the bass distorts or has to be turned down. But if I had to pay full price, I'd get a pair of sony xplod speakers for the same money.

Pros: cheap, shallow mounting depth, decent mids and highs. fit my car perfectly. can play loud without distortion if bass is lowered

Cons: lack of bass is an issue, even for a 6.5"

Sound is good for what these cost. The people complaining about no bass should understand these aren't meant to blow out windows. Mine are running off factory amp and put out a fair amount of bass for a door speaker. Not amped they won't blow your socks off, if you want bass, get subs! Duh. They are good for mids and highs which they are intended for.

These are great speakers, especially if you are wanting to replace your stock drivers with something a little more powerful. Good definition and range for the price.

Pros: Box comes with everything you need to ensure a seamless installation. Speakers sound real nice.

Cons: As others have already mentioned, the bass is not too defined, but that is what you get a sub for anyway. The installation was very tight for my Dodge Stealth as far as the stock grills go. There was only about 2 mm of space between the face of the tweeter and the back of the stock grill. It 'fits' fine, just be careful not to accidentally kick the grill or you may damage the tweeter.

I got these to replace some blown stock speakers. I wasn't expecting anything spectacular, but they are ok. They are just good basic stock replacement speakers for a good price. Don't expect loads of bass, but the mids and highs come through nicely. These are 6.5" speakers after all, if you want bass, go get a sub. Over all, if you want to save some money and just need good stock replacement speakers with a slight upgrade these are it.

Pros: Sound decent, better than most stock speakers.

Cons: Don't handle bass well, but they are a 6.5" 2-way, not a subwoofer.

2001 Hyundai Santa Fe
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These speakers sounded worse than stock in my 2001 Hyundai Santa Fe, although they appear more durable. The tonal balance was fine in the mids/highs, but the bass had an unpleasant peak in the "upper bass" range with a sharp dropoff on the low end- even when compared to other speakers in this size and price range. Trying to compensate for the lacking bass by using tone controls resulted in the woofers quickly reaching their limits. I swapped these out for Kicker DSC65s, which were well worth the additional money for a much more solid bass presentation and almost as good balance in the mid/upper range.

Pros: Decent performance to price ratio for mid and high frequency response

Cons: Slightly harsh sounding, and lack bass quality- even when compared to similar size/price speakers

I purchased four of these for my wife's 2005 VW Golf. After almost years , my wife's stereo was sounding a little shabby. No bass to speak of, and just sounded tinny. I purchased a JVC KW-R710as well and that helped tremendously. However, when I saw the quality of these speakers and the VW speakers, I had to act. I installed the Pioneers and it was evident. The music was everywhere and it was amazing.

Pros: Beautiful build quality and great bass response. Let me be up front here. I know most people nowadays like that thumping bass, we don't. So, when I say great bass response, this in reference to normal listening volume.

Great Factory Replacement Speakers!

Written by: 1994jgclaredo from Baltimore, MD on April 9, 2014

First let me start off by saying that I wasn't originally planning on replacing the stock speakers in the doors of my 1994 Jeep Grand Cherokee, and was just planning on replacing the radio. Shortly after installing my new radio, I realized that my factory speakers did not sound great. I was on a budget, and these were great for almost $80 for two pairs. They fit well into my Jeep's doors (just used self-tapping screws and spliced in the factory speaker wiring), and sound great as compared to my stock speakers. They don't have booming bass, but work great for factory speaker replacement. They have 250 watts maximum power, and would sound great, even when paired to a factory radio. Another goal was to get speakers that you couldn't tell I replaced them from behind the door panel grills, and these fit the bill. (:

Pros: Hide behind factory door panels, Fit well into doors, Sound awesome, Great factory speaker replacements!

Cons: No booming bass, but still sound great!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I replaced the factory speakers in my Toyota Matrix XR since I was updating the factory stereo to a Bluetooth unit. These sound pretty nice with my new Alpine. Turns out, my factory speakers weren't blown at all and still quite tight. The factory speakers weren't two-way, which might have lent to their slight deeper bass response. But, now with these 2-way speakers, I actually here voices in music and talk radio much better. They're tight sounding, not muddy, just not super deep as far as bass.

Pros: Low price Good sound Quality assembly - no dents in cones, good soldering, no scratches, nothing off-center Quality packaging All pieces were there Mounting bracket kit included by Crutchfield Great packaging and shipping by Crutchfield

Cons: A bit weak on bass (but I guess I should expect on a low-profile 2-way 6.5" speaker)

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this for my 2014 Honda CRV. This vehicle has an integrated AV system so I only wanted to upgrade the speakers, but am not interested in buying a sound processor, an amp, and a subwoofer. That being said, I specifically chose this Pioneer model because it (supposedly) can reproduce frequencies down to 31 Hz. Well, turns out that was a lie. The mids and highs sparkle, but there is no bass whatsoever. I have Polk Audio LSi9 speakers in my living room, and those produce deeper bass at it's low end of 38 Hz. Heck, the awful stock speakers in the CRV produced better bass. Either Pioneer's specifications have a typographical error, or the claim of being able to dig down to 31 Hz is an outright misrepresentation.

Buy this model of speaker if you want a reasonably priced, well-made speaker to provide clarity over stock speakers. But don't make the same mistake I did and buy them for their purported range. You'll be disappointed and like me, will never trust Pioneer specifications ever again.

Also, be warned: Crutchfield does NOT have a mastersheet for the 2012-2014 Honda CRV. This is NOT specifically mentioned anywhere on the website. If you are buying equipment for this vehicle, you are on your own when it comes to installation. Very disappointing purchase experience overall. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.

Pros: Great mids and highs. Good price. Reasonably well made.

Cons: No bass. None whatsoever. No really. It's not there.

With the Pioneer DEH-P4100UB receiver I also purchased form Crutchfield I now have a nicely balanced system. I highly recommend these speakers. Now I actually have bass coming from my front doors. Pros: Crutchfield supplies all necessary components for an easy install. Great communication with the seller.

Cons: Mounting bracket sent with the speakers needed some modification. No big deal though.

Got them installed with few issues. The front set had mounting hardware, this set of back speakers did not. About 10 minutes of searching through my nuts and bolts found what I needed. They sound great. Now I can listen with the volume closer to 20 percent rather than 80 percent. Also glad I ordered the speaker baffles. Followed one suggestion in the reviews that said to cut the whole bottom our for the best sound. He was right.

Pros: Fit in the existing factory speaker holes, Appears to be a quality speaker for the price Included wiring harness eliminated any soldering/splicing

I installed these speakers in the doors of a 1972 MGB . They really shouldn't fit. I needed to purchase some 1/2" spacer rings to bring the speakers out from the door panels to get clearance. I had already cut the door panels for a previous install and just figured that I could make it work. Hey, it's an open cockpit MG! There should be a balance between "tunes" and exhaust note. I love my tunes, but I'd take the sound of the exhaust every time!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought these speakers to replace factory fronts in a 2008 impala, I was looking for something as good or a bit better than the oem speakers. They showed up fast, great price, and with the free mounting kit, it was a great deal. This was the first time I had ever put speakers in a car, so I don't know if there all the same or not, but the factory speakers in my car, were built in to the mounting bracket, with no way to take them apart. the mounting kit that came with these fit perfectly, easy to install, sound great, the whole thing took me about an hour. For the reviews that say they don't have enough bass, or range, I would tell them to either learn how to use their equalizer, or if you want your car to sound like it's shaking apart, spend more than $50 on your sound system. The sound is great, way better the the factory setup. I did have to call customer support, but it was my fault, didn't realize the instructions were e-mailed, but they were very helpful, fast and friendly, and I was even able to understand what they were saying

Pros: Good price, perfect mounting kit, great sound, customer support was very helpful, and they even speak english as a first language :)

Cons: None

Speakers look nice, but sound like Crap. Total down grad from factory speakers. My 2002 Trailblazer factory speakers blow these away big time. Do not buy these speakers if you don't have a Sub-woofer. These speakers output absolutely no Bass at all. Even if I Max out the Bass setting on my radio. The bass on these speakers sound like a "thong" sound as if you were to bang your hands on a empty spastic bucket. After a week, I couldn't get used to it, I replaced them with Kickers - Way much better. There should be a note on these stating: Bass tube or sub-woofer required and not included. I don't know what happened to Pioneer with this one.

Pros: They look nice. Mid and high range sound ONLY - good for AM radio only

Cons: No Bass at all. Zero, I wouldn't install them in my car even if they were free. Item has been retuned.

So happy to have front speakers again! Excellent price; They sound great and were a snap to install. Thank you again to Crutchfield for making it possible for me to get what I needed.

Pros: Easy to install and sound great in my Civic.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Good price; however it was recommended through my vehicle finder as a sure fit. It does not fit significantly smaller in size as well sound. The quality and sound of my blown stock sound much better than what was provided. Otherwise shipping was adequate, price was fair. Overall though highly displeased.

Pros: Price, shipping

Cons: Wrong size, quality

Great Factory Replacement Speakers (:

Written by: 94zjowner from MD on April 1, 2013

I purchased two pairs of the Pioneer TS-G1644R speakers to replace four factory speakers in my 1994 Jeep Grand Cherokee. I have owned these speakers for a little over a year, and couldn't be happier. The sound quality is excellent, better than my factory speakers ever were. The power output is 250 watts max, so they can handle a lot of power. Plus, they fit well behind my Jeep's door panels, and they are barely noticeable, until you hear them, of course, which you will then be able to know they're there. I just used self-tapping screws and spliced the factory speaker wiring into them, and that saved me money in the long run. If you need replacement speakers and either don't feel like trying to track down factory speakers or don't want to spend a lot of money, then these speakers are for you! (:

Pros: Great Bass and Treble Response, Great Midrange Response, 250w Max Power Output, Barely Physically Noticeable, Sound Great, Low Price (:

Cons: Bass is a Bit Lacking :(

Pros: Nice sound

Cons: Did not fit application as I was told they would. That was my main concern. Had to build speaker boxes for them.

ok for the money but the specs are deceiving

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These speakers sound pretty good. They are a bit tinny and the bass response is not what I expected from the specs. What the specs don't tell you is that the bass response is at -30dB not -3dB like most manufacturers use. So the actual response is down to only about 100Hz at -3dB. A bit disappointing but not bad for the price because the quality makes up for it a bit. Next I will spend the extra $30 and get the Polks. I know for a fact they are speced correctly and sound awesome in my friends car with the same setup I have.

Pros: Price. Quality

Cons: Tinny. Misleading specs.

Great Factory Replacement Speakers!

Written by: ZJ Owner from MD on February 15, 2013

Shortly after I installed a new radio into my 1994 Jeep Grand Cherokee, I discovered that my factory speakers were blown (I had the standard four-speaker system, NOT the Infinity premium sound system with six speakers and an amplifier). I needed a relatively low-priced and good-sounding option from a reputable manufacturer. I saw these, and their low price and good sound quality was attractive. They have a high power rating, so they can handle any amplifier up to 250 watts, though I used my radio's built-in high-power amplifier to power them. I purchased two pairs of these, one pair for both front doors, and one pair for both rear doors. They installed easily (I used self-tapping screws and drilled new mounting holes in the doors of my Jeep for my new speakers, and I cut off the factory speaker wiring harnesses and spliced my Jeep's factory door speaker wiring right into my new speakers). They sound awesome, and I can turn up the volume on my radio without having to worry about crackling or watery-sounding speakers. Plus, they're barely, if at all, noticeable at all, behind my Jeep's door panels, so you can't always see them, but you can most definitely hear them. All in all, a great purchase for people looking to replace their vehicle's factory speakers! Highly recommended! (:

Pros: Barely noticeable, look great, and sound even better, cheap to buy, sound better than they cost

Cons: Not enough bass, but still better than stock (:

Good for the price

2001 Subaru Forester
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed this in a 2001 Subaru Forester. Choose these speakers over the Kenwood and JVC due to the product reputation. All three of these speakers were an "exact fit" according to the Crutchfield online vehicle speaker guide. Installation took 20 minutes for both speakers. The speaker grill on my vehicle can be popped out in a few seconds which made the install fairly simple. Installation time could have been quicker but I let my teenage son install both speakers with a ratchet screwdriver instead on my 18v Makita.....didn't want to strip the screws. The harness kit fit perfect and 3 screws holding the speaker was a breeze to install. The TS-G1644R has decent bass with the highs having more of a midrange dominance. I prefer more of a flatter midrange and crisper highs instead. With that being said these speakers are a huge improvement over my stock ones! I'm running a Pioneer head unit with no amp. Might also want to consider Alpine or Polk speakers because in my opinion sound a little better but at 2x the price. My main goal was to purchase good speakers at a reasonable price due to my car being 12 years old. Just passed this car to my teenage son. Going to miss this car!

Pros: Reasonable, easy install, good sound and Pioneer. 2nd day air shipping.

Cons: More midrange tones and lacking more of a punchy bass. An amp may help.

2012 GMC Sierra
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought these to upgrade my factory system and because of their low price. As the saying goes, you get what you pay for. I bought 4 and returned them to Crutchfield. Thankfully Crutchfield has an excellent return policy. I installed these in a 2012 GMC Sierra and they were no improvement over the factory speakers. In fact, the factory speakers had much better bass. These did not have much bass at all and the highs were no better than factory. They played all midrange sound and would be great for talk radio but that's about it. Spend just a little more money and get a lot more speaker.

Pros: They are cheap and easy to install.

Cons: Most everything else.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Hate to ping Pioneer...not really their fault, especially at this price point, but not the most robust speaker, but they are efficient. My biggest problem was with the Crutchfield description of "fits your vehicle". I could have installed a 1" component tweeter in place of the door speaker and it would have "fit" as well as this 6-1/2. The speaker would have completely fallen into the door if not for the tiny tabs meant for 6-3/4" mounting. There simply wasn't enough speaker to fill the hole. I had to make custom adapter plates to make these fit properly. Furthermore, the factory wiring plug was so far away from the speaker that the "free" adapters were way too short. I had to lengthen them by about 6-7 inches to plug these speakers in.

Pros: low price, attractive, efficient

Cons: on the wimpy side, but how can I complain at this price?

2008 Chevrolet Impala
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Very easy installation (2008 Chevrolet Impala) and great sound. I bought these speakers to replace the stock door speakers. The issue was the stock front door speakers would work intermittently, doing some research found that changing the speakers would solve the issue. These speakers have a lot better sound than the stock speakers. The supplied installation instructions covered everything needed to get the door panels off and speakers installed. Total time from start to finish was just under an hour. I read some reviews about the speakers have no bass sound, this might be true if someone is installing the speakers without the mounting adaptor kit. When I was testing the speakers I set the speaker in the speaker hole in the door to test that sound was coming out, the sound was tinny sounding, but once the mounting adaptor was installed and the speaker secured to the door the sound was amazing. There's one step in the installation instructions that says to remove the door release cable from the door panel. My doors the cable was really in there hard, and I didn't want to force / break the plastic retainer, there was enough slack in the cable that I was able to lean the door panel on the door and had adequate access to the speaker without issue.

Pros: Great sound, installation was easy (less than 30 minutes per door). Crutchfield installation instructions were spot on.

Cons: The sound is so good that now I need to find better speakers for the rear deck.

Upgrade from Bose

Written by: Steve-O from Charlotte NC on January 13, 2013

I put a pair of these in my 98 Cadillac STS to replace the 8" midrange woofers in the Bose sytem. These made a huge difference. The output level was pretty much the same but the clarity and depth was much improved. Install was simple, just used the stock baskets from the 8" woofers and drilled new holes for the Pioneers. As people have said the bass response is a bit weak, but it's just a 6.5" coax, there is only so much it can do. I'm running a sub anyway and my system sounds really well balanced.

Pros: Price Quality Easy of installation

Cons: Bass response Surround feels a bit thin

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I'm very happy with these speakers, nice clean sound, easy to install. Handles the power of the new receiver I installed with them. Perhaps I was warned by other reviews, or the fact that the original speakers were pretty crappy ('99 Subaru base model Forester stock speakers) to start with and one was blown to boot, but the base response is adequate if not overwhelming.... but I'm not listening to death grunge anyways. If you want great base response, I think you need bigger speakers and/or subwoofer, but these are fine. The point is, don't fret on the base response when reading the reviews, or think about spending real money if that is really important to you. Overall, great sound for the price (and size).

Pros: Good sound, easy install

Cons:

Cons: Low wattage may not be suitable for all situations. They seem a bit weak in the lower midrange but mids and highs sound good and a sub helps fill the gap

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

For the money you pay for these speakers they are a good value. Pioneer has been a quality audio provider for as long as I can remember and this is another quality product from them. These speakers were to replace some failed factory speakers, I would not say the bass is any better but the sound is clearer and you can tell this a better quality built product with just a visual inspection.

The one additional piece I would to add is Crutchfield is the way to go. They included the mounting bracket that worked perfect for our car that would have cost you $20 from another source. The install instructions lacked details in a few spots I needed them but in general were plenty good enough I could get the job done. The product shipped quickly, securely and arrived in perfect condition. Maybe if you tried you save a few bucks elsewhere but really not worth it and will probably cost you more in the end.

Pros: Quality speaker at a good price. Good clarity.

Cons: Bass not quite as strong as I would have hoped.

The first one I put in wasn't centered in the opening (it was too high) which prevented me from getting the door panel back on, but it was easy to re-do (I had to drill now holes in the enclosures since the speakers weren't exactly the same size as factory - this was easy to do)>
