Pioneer Stage 4 TS-W252PRS

Overview

Our take on the Pioneer Stage 4 TS-W252PRS

A stiff woofer cone is optimal for moving air to create powerful bass, but a cone that's too heavy loses control and introduces distortion into your music. Pioneer utilizes the properties of different materials to create a cone that provides reliable stiffness, yet is light enough to respond to rapid changes in your music. The cone features an Aramid fiber surface layer, a polypropylene core, and a glass fiber reinforcement layer — all three work in tandem to pump out great bass that's not dragged down by excess baggage.

Bass that hits hard and sounds great

Pioneer's Stage 4 Reference Series subwoofers add premium bass to your system — you'll hear accurate, lifelike low end that hits like a ton of bricks. Pioneer loads this bass powerhouse with a wide array of advanced features and technologies to make sure you get the most out of your music.

The right cone for the job

A stiff woofer cone is optimal for moving air to create powerful bass, but a cone that's too heavy loses control and introduces distortion into your music. Pioneer utilizes the properties of different materials to create a cone that provides reliable stiffness, yet is light enough to respond to rapid changes in your music. The cone features an Aramid fiber surface layer, a polypropylene core, and a glass fiber reinforcement layer — all three work in tandem to pump out great bass that's not dragged down by excess baggage.

Pioneer also primes their Stage 4 subs with a patented suspension system which utilizes progressive flexing to keep the cone perfectly centered during heavy play. A butyl-coated fiber surround also promotes the deep excursion that you need for strong performance.

Authoritative and accurate

The TS-W252PRS 10" subwoofer handles up to 400 watts RMS for high-impact bass. A die-cast aluminum frame adds strength and gives the sub stability over the long haul. Pioneer recommends using this sub in a sealed enclosure for accurate, powerful performance.

I bought the last Scratch-and-Dent subwoofer available. I'm currently running it in a 0.99 cubic foot box that I built myself. After the displacement of the sub, it comes out to 0.897 cubes. I'm running it off a Sundown SAE-600D at 4 ohms in my 1986 Toyota 4runner. The sound quality is great, best I have ever heard personally. Not crazy loud; if you want a lot of output, get more than one or look to a brand like Sundown Audio. Pioneer designed the W252PRS to play flat up to 2,000hz. This gives it a smooth response without any peaks. Group delay is low (in a sealed box).

Pros: Amazing sound quality Nice to look at Works well in a small sealed box Hits the lows with authority Hits all the way up to about 2,000hz Smooth frequency response (no peaks)

Cons: Sub is almost 8" in depth (though it need a few more for ventilation) If you want extreme SPL, keep looking

While the speaker seems extremely heavy duty, the amplifier that was sold as a package with it seems to be underpowered for this speaker. That is why I didn't give all five stars. I think this speaker should've been a two ohm model.

Pros: Looks heavy duty, very built!

Cons: Definitely not worth full price!

Great speaker

Requires Active X over

Shinigami from N.C. on 6/6/2011

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great material, displacement. And for the power output is reasonable for pre lite classification sub (Component Sub). However these need an active X over due to there output frequency range 20 to 2.4 KHz. This reasoning is that these are meant to cover the entire systems range to prevent a flat spot from occurring. Ect. if you to have subs that cut off at say 120 HZ. then your tone would climb then the sub falls off revealing the primary speakers (mids, fronts, rears ect) to try to produce a presence in range that you can no longer feel. However some subs go above their recommended range limit. An amp or a crossover should be used to prevent the amps built in limit regardless of amp from causing frequency distortion. Unless it has one built in (Amp). I know long winded right? Well the point is i had distortion occur due to the subs trying to match my lows. wasn't pretty. An X over let me drop the phase a bit to correct this in the subs. However when used in full range this was not a problem. About the component, Great sound from a 10" , reasonable sound. Can hit hard if liked. And Can fill that spot in the lows when needed. Mind you my door speakers can flex the sheet metal on my doors. 3000gt, just so you know its not thin metal. Sorry for the erratic memo, edited to fit from different parts of the whole opinion then compiled.
