About the Pioneer TS-WH500A

Bob Bihlmayer

New technology

Pioneer comes up with a new entrant in the continuing contest to build the smallest, most effective subwoofer. This subwoofer features a 50-watt amp and two 7"x4" speakers in a seriously small enclosure that'll surprise you with its powerful bass response. The surface area of the two drivers is equivalent to that of an 8-1/4" subwoofer, so it'll move some air.
Pioneer TS-WH500A Powered 8-1/4" Subwoofer

The latest Pioneer speaker technology gives you powerful bass from an enclosure that's a little over 2 inches tall.

Pioneer came up with a new take on woofer construction, converting the horizontal movement of the motors and magnets on either side of the driver into force that drives the speaker up and down. This Horizontal Vertical Transforming speaker technology creates a unique woofer that takes up very little space. One woofer fires up and the other fires down in this compact enclosure, allowing this compact sub to deliver superior performance and sound quality.

Easy fit

This compact enclosure allows for installation in a wide variety of vehicles including compact and subcompact cars, trucks, and SUVs, without compromising performance or sound quality. The TS-WH500A produces less noise and vibration than a typical sub, and offers broad low-frequency response for well-balanced bass. If you've been thinking about adding some bass to your space-challenged vehicle, you owe it to yourself to check out this Pioneer powered sub.

Product Research

Features

Product Overview: The TS-WH500A amplified subwoofer features a built-in amp (50 watts RMS, 150 watts peak) and two oval woofers (7" x 4"), housed in a compact enclosure.

Mounting: The brackets are mounted on opposite corners (diagonal) of the enclosure. Each bracket can be mounted to extend from the side or the end of the enclosure, or at an angle. They add approximately 7/8" to the width or length.

Signal Input: The female RCA inputs on the included harness can be used with a line level or speaker level signal. A 15" male RCA to speaker wire adapter is included.

Wiring Harness: The included wiring harness covers power, ground, remote turn-on, and signal input. The wire length varies by function:

  • Signal Input: 26" (terminated with female RCA jacks)
  • Ground: 60"
  • Power: 16-1/2'
  • Remote Turn-on: 16-1/2'

Wired Remote Control: The wired remote control provides fingertip control over the subwoofer. You can adjust the volume, crossover point (50-125 Hz), and switch the phase from 0° to 180°. The remote control can be mounted using the supplied adhesive hook and loop fastener. There are no controls on the subwoofer. The remote cable is terminated with an RJ-14 plug, which connects the subwoofer chassis.

  • Width: 1-3/8"
  • Height: 1"
  • Length: 4"

Mounting: The subwoofer, under 2-1/2" tall, can be mounted flat under a seat in the passenger compartment of many vehicles.

Customer Q&A

Q
Can this be used to replace the pioneer subwoofer under the passenger seat of a 1999 Lexus RX300?

This is for all of the available compact subs, I would recommend to contact an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. They will be able to pull up your vehicle, compare the different subs available and give you the details on if they will fit and what you will need for an installation in your vehicle.

Q
Can I wire the power straight to the battery with an in line fuse or do I have to use the supplied power cables?

Aloha Kyle K, Yes, you can and it was suggested to me by Crutchfield to wire it strait to the battery. Also, the yellow wire already has an inline fuse, which I had to nip off to get through my firewall rubber grommet near foot pedals(gotta love wire coat hangers and tape) and then reconnect inline fuse holder near battery. In the photo with the wire bundle, it's tough to make out, but you can just barely see the black rubber inline fuse holder peaking out from under the wad of wires. Good luck with your install. By the way this is a great lil' sub, won't win any sound competitions but will fill in the low frequencies and is fairly loud. I love the gain and frequency wired remote, which I have Velcroed near my steering wheel by my headlights knob and fog lights buttons. Easy to reach with my left hand and make quick adjustments without taking my eyes off the road.

That would probably be best for several reasons. One the sub would get good clean power. Second, if you decide to tap into another wire make sure it has nothing to do with the engine computer. The engine computer is very sensitive to voltage drop. This is how it measures engine temp, air temp, load, etc. So the safest is directly to battery. Depending on how far it is to your battery use a wire of sufficient gauge to handle the load. The longer the wire the more resistant it is to current flow. Hence the need for a larger wire. These are nice subs and I like mine a lot. The ground wire can be grounded to the body anywhere. Make sure the ground is clean. If needed scrape off any paint, grunge etc.

Yes wire direct to battery with in line fuse. It's supplied. I have always wired amps direct to battery and not the fuse box. Very easy install. Power, ground, remote turn on and rca cables.
jeff  May 07, 2016
A
you can wire it directly to the battery, it just needs a constant 10 amps.

I personally do not know if you can go straight to the battery and I would advise against that since your battery could possibly drain that way; I was able to use the supplied power cable and find a live wire, when the car was in the on position, from my interior fuse box and drill a hole in the frame and attach the wire as a ground.

Q
There appears to be two speakers: one on the top and one on the bottom. If I place this sub on the floor under a seat wouldn't it kill the sound from the bottom speaker? Should there be some type of spacers to allow at least some clearance?

I installed this unit vertically in the trunk area of my Jeep. The raised edges provide an offset to allow for the sound to escape through the middle. I am very please with the bass response from such a small unit. Hope this helps.

I wondered about that also. I just laid it on the floor under the jump seat in my truck though. I does not appear to inhibit the sound at all. I hypothesize that because of the low frequency of the sound waves from a sub that it is not affected by this. I do remain curious if spacing it up an inch or so might help. I am very happy with this unit. I am an older audiophile and wished only to flesh out my sound, not get thump ah, thump ah. For what I wanted it works perfectly. Perhaps it was designed with being mounted flat on the floor in mind with no spacers. After all that is what the instructions call for.

I had two speakers like that and I bolted them both to the floor In my truck and they sounded fine. Having the bolted to the floor didn't affect how they sound I think it actually help to make the bass sound a little deeper.

What type of RCA cables do I need in order to complete the install? If anyone who has bought this or something similar knows please let me know!!

I bought the efx series of cables that Crutchfield recommended for the sub when I bought it. My sub is mounted under the rear jump seat in an extended cab P/U. I am very happy with my purchase.

Q
Which under seat subwoofer would give me the best balance of punch and sound quality to restore some bass in my truck? I'm looking mostly at the kicker 11hs8 and pioneer ts-wh500a but am open to suggestions. Thanks!
