Wireless music options from computers and smartphones

When you connect the VSX-1124 to your home network, you'll open up lots of music options. If you have a networked computer, you can stream tunes wirelessly over the network for playback in your home theater. Apple AirPlay makes it easy to stream music from Apple® devices like an iPhone®, as well as from iTunes® on your computer. Pandora® and vTuner Internet radio offer endless hours of free online music. If you subscribe to Spotify®, you can play their huge library of tunes wirelessly using your Android™ or Apple device. You can even download Pioneer's free remote app to your phone or tablet to control the receiver via Wi-Fi®. AirPlay and the Pioneer remote app require a wireless home network and a wired connection between the receiver and network.

Audio and video in two rooms

Most of us want music and video in more rooms than just the home theater. You can use the VSX-1124 to feed audio and video signals to a second room. There is a second HDMI output that can send signals to another TV. You can even watch content from different sources simultaneously, so the kids can watch a movie in the playroom while you watch the game in the home theater. This receiver can also power speakers in a second room — perfect for a bedroom, kitchen, or porch.

Pioneer helps you get connected

Setting up the VSX-1124 is easy when you use Pioneer's AVNavigator. You can use your computer, smartphone, or tablet to follow step-by-step instructions for making connections and tweaking settings. One of the most important setup processes is calibrating your speakers. Sound complicated? The receiver does it for you with Advanced Multi-Channel Acoustic Calibration. Just plug the included microphone into the front-panel jack, and receiver will optimize its output based on your speakers and your room setup. It will also calibrate your powered subwoofer, for consistent, accurate bass response throughout the room. AVNavigator requires that the receiver be connected to the same home network as the computer, smartphone, or tablet used to run it.

Praise for the Pioneer VSX-1124 from Sound & Vision

"While Pioneer is not the only manufacturer that can make an AVR sound great for $600, it has had the knack longer than most. The VSX-1124 not only lives up to that standard but exceeds it a little. Even break-in listening, before I ran the MCACC auto setup and room correction, was a pleasure. In the formal demos, this little receiver hit one home run after another, with midrange voicing just a little on the warm side of neutral."

Discrete Direct Energy Amplification: The Pioneer VSX-1124-K AV receiver is equipped with a discrete 7-channel amplifier rated at 90 watts (into 8-ohms, at 20Hz-20kHz, with 0.08% THD, driving 2 channels). The Discrete Direct Energy Amplifier design creates a wide range frequency response that makes it ideal for reproducing new high resolution audio formats. With this proprietary amplifier design, Pioneer's engineers have found the key to managing the wide fluctuations in heat that can significantly alter the overall audio performance of each of the discrete amplified channels. By utilizing a new temperature compensation circuitry of the temperature fluctuations are effectively minimized between channels to maintain high quality audio from all connected devices. The Direct Energy amplifier also features a low impedance, high current, and compact circuit design to maximize performance in the critical output stages.

Amplifier Assignment: The VSX-1124-K's seven discrete amplifier channels can be configured to accommodate your type of home theater setup.

    • Surround Back (7.2ch): The AV receiver's amplifier channels can be configured as Front Left/Right, Center, Surround Left/Right, and Surround Back Left/Right for Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD, and Dolby Pro Logic IIx 7.1ch playback.
    • Front Wide or Height (7.2ch): The receiver's amplifier channels can also be configured as Front Left/Right, Front Height (Wide) Left/Right, Center, and Surround Left/Right for Dolby Pro Logic IIz 7.1ch playback.
    • Bi-Amp (5.2ch): Five speakers are powered in the main room (Front L/R, center, and Surround L/R) with the surround back amplifier channels reassigned to bi-amp the front speakers. A bi-amplification connection uses two amplifiers for one speaker. One amplifier is connected to the woofer section of a loudspeaker while the other is connected to the combined midrange and tweeter section. With this arrangement each amplifier operates over a limited frequency range, making its job easier.
    • Speaker B: The VSX-1124-K's amplifier channels can be configured as Front Left/Right, Center, Surround Left/Right, and Speaker B for Dolby Digital, DTS, and Dolby Pro Logic II 5.1ch playback in the main zone and 2ch PCM playback of the same source in the second zone.
    • Zone2 (5.2ch + 2ch): In addition, the AV receiver's amplifier channels can be configured as Front Left/Right, Center, Surround Left/Right, and Zone 2 for Dolby Digital, DTS, and Dolby Pro Logic II 5.1ch playback in the main zone and 2ch PCM playback of a different source in the second zone.
Note: Both the surround back and front height/wide speaker channels can be connected at the same time. In this case sound will be output from either the front height or surround back speakers based on the type of surround format.

192kHz/24-bit ESS Sabre DACs + TI Aureus DSP Engine: The Pioneer VSX-1124-K receiver is equipped with 192kHz/24-bit ESS Sabre Preier digital-to-analog converters (DACs) to decode and playback high-resolution recordings with clearer sound. The VSX-1124-K AV receiver is equipped with a Texas Instruments (TI) Aureus Digital Signal Processor (DSP) Engine for better surround sound reproduction.

PQLS Jitter Reduction: PQLS (Precision Quartz Lock System) is a digital audio signal transfer control technology using the HDMI Control function. It offers  higher-quality audio playback by controlling audio signals from the receiver to a PQLS compatible Pioneer Blu-ray player. This enables removing jitter that has a negative effect on the quality of the sound and is generated upon transmission.

Multi-Channel Decoding Formats: The Pioneer VSX-1124-K AV receiver supports the following multi-channel (Dolby Digital, DTS, Dolby Pro Logic) decoding formats.

Note: Dolby Digital and DTS listening modes can only be selected if your audio source is connected to the A/V receiver via a digital audio connection (HDMI, optical, or coaxial). To enjoy true 7.1ch Dolby Digital TrueHD and DTS-HD surround sound, the receiver must be connected to your Blu-ray player via HDMI.

Advanced MCACC: Advanced MCACC incorporates Pioneer's Multi-Channel Acoustic Calibration, Subwoofer EQ, and Phase Control to create the optimum acoustic environment for movies and music in any room in the house. The advanced MCACC system comes complete with a auto-calibration microphone.

    • Multi-Channel Acoustic Calibration (MCACC): The VSX-1124-K features Pioneer's exclusive Multi-Channel Acoustic Calibration system (MCACC), providing an optimized multi-channel listening experience by measuring every speaker's connection, noting its size and distance from the listening point, sound levels and timbre in order to calibrate, customize and maximize performance specifically for your room. An auto-calibration microphone is included.
    • Subwoofer EQ: Subwoofer EQ determines the distance and characteristics of your subwoofer, and makes adjustments using four different frequency parameters and an extremely low-latency DSP to reduce phase and timing errors that are often found in other room calibration systems.
    • Phase Control: The AV receiver's Phase Control feature uses phase correction measurements to make sure your system's sound arrives at the listening position in phase, preventing unwanted distortion and/or coloring of the sound. Phase Control technology provides coherent sound reproduction through the use of phase matching for an optimal sound image at your listening position.

Stream Direct Modes: You can use the receiver's two Direct Modes when you want to hear the truest possible reproduction of a source; all unnecessary signal processing is bypassed.

    • Direct: Sources are heard according to the settings made in the Manual Speaker Setup (speaker setting, channel level, speaker distance), as well as with dual mono settings. You will hear sources according to the number of channel in the signal.
    • Pure Direct: Analog and PCM sources are heard without and digital processing.

Advanced Surround Modes: The Advance Surround Modes create a variety of surround effects. You can choose from Action, Drama, Advanced Game, Sports, Classical, Rock/Pop, Front Stage Surround, Extended Stereo, or Headphone Surround.

    • Front Stage Surround: Allows you to create a virtual surround effect using only front speakers and a powered subwoofer.
    • Extended Stereo: Allows you to listen to multi-channel stereo through all 7.1 speakers.
    • Headphone Surround: When listening through headphones, you can still get a virtual surround sound effect.

Audio Enhancements: The Pioneer VSX-1124-K offers several audio enhancement settings to improve your listening experience.

    • Tone Controls: You can adjust the receiver's Bass & Treble independently.
    • Advanced Sound Retriever: Even compressed audio such as WMA, MP3, and AAC is enhanced with another Pioneer exclusive, Advanced Sound Retriever, by filling in areas where subtle details were left out during the compression process. When audio data is removed during the compression process, sound quality often suffers from an uneven sound image. The Sound Retriever feature employs new DSP technology that helps bring CD quality sound back to compressed 2-channel audio by restoring sound pressure and smoothing jagged artifacts left over after compression.
    • Hi-Bit 24: This feature creates a wider dynamic range with digital sources; like CDs, DVDs, or BDs. Smoother, more delicate musical expression can be achieved by converting 16-bit PCM or 20-bit compressed audio signals to 24-bit.
    • X-Curve: Most soundtracks mixed for cinema sound too bright when played back in large rooms. The X-Curve setting acts as a kind of re-equalization for home theater listening, and restores proper tonal balance of movie soundtracks.
    • Dialogue Enhancement: Localizes dialog in the center channel to make it stand out from other background sounds in a TV or movie soundtrack. By moving from UP1 through UP2 and UP3 up to UP4, you can make the sound source seem to relocate upwards.
    • Up Mix Function: In a 7.1ch surround system wi h surround speakers place directly at the side of the listening position, the surround sound of 5.1ch sources is heard from the side. The Up Mix function mixes the sound of the surround speaker with the surround back speakers so that the surround sound is hear from diagonally to the rear as it should be.

Surround Parameters: You can adjust the following surround mode parameters.

    • Dolby Pro Logic II Music Settings: While listening in the Dolby Pro Logic II/x Music format, there are three further enhancements you can adjust - Panorama (broadens the front stereo image to the surround speakers to provide a wraparound effect, especially effective when there is limited output from the surround channels), Dimension (allows you to move the soundfield forward or backward), and Center Width (allows you to adjust the width of the center channel).
    • Center Image: In the Neo:6 Music mode, the Center Image feature adjusts the output of the left and right channels relative to the center channel, allowing you to make the center channel more or less dominant as needed. This improves the image of the center channel, especially when the listener is off-center. Adjustment varies from 7 (nothing subtracted from the L/R channels) to 0 (L/R channel output is cut in half).
    • Height Gain: While listening in the Dolby Pro Logic IIz format, you can adjust the Height Gain which adjusts the volume of the Front Height channels. and
    • Virtual Settings: Choose between 4 Virtual Speaker Modes - V.Height (when you're not using front height speakers, selecting this mode allows you to hear a virtual front height channel through your front speakers), V.Wide (when you're not using front wide speakers, selecting this mode allows you to hear a virtual front wide channel through your front speakers), V.Depth (when this mode is selected, the soundfield expands virtually behind the display, resulting a soundfield with the same depth as the 3D picture to achieve a better sense of presence), orV.SB (when you're not using surround back speakers, selecting this mode allows you to hear a virtual surround back channel through your surround speaker)

Audio Level Controls: The Pioneer VSX-1124-K offers a variety of audio level controls to tailor your audio.

    • Auto Level Control: The Auto Level Control equalizes volume differences between portable audio tracks or television programming and eliminates jarring volume changes.
    • Dynamic Range Control: This function adjusts the level of dynamic range for movie soundtracks optimized for Dolby Digital/DTS formats. This feature is helpful when listening to Dolby Digital/DTS soundtracks at low volume levels.
    • Midnight Listening: The Midnight Listening mode allows you to hear effective surround sound of movies at lower volumes.
    • Loudness: The Loudness function is used to get good bass and treble from music sources at low volumes.
    • LFE Attenuate: Dolby Digital and DTS audio sources can include ultra-low bass tones. Set the LFE Attenuator as necessary to prevent the ultra low bass tones from distorting the sound from the speakers. The LFE attenuator can be set to 0, -5, -10, -15, or -20 dB.

Audio Connections: Here is a lists of some of the audio connections that you'll find on the VSX-1124-K AV receiver.

    • Digital Inputs: The Pioneer receiver is equipped with one optical digital input and one coaxial digital input.

    Convenience Features

On-Screen Display (via HDMI): If your home theater system is enclosed in a cabinet, it's often difficult to know the status of certain functions, such as current volume level. With On Screen Display (OSD), your receiver's basic information, such as volume, input, and surround mode, will overlay on screen as you make adjustments with the remote, so you don't have to switch to a blank screen background. Meanwhile, the GUI (Graphical User Interface) lets you easily navigate Internet radio and iPod/iPhone contents. Both the OSD and GUI operate via HDMI.

Note: If your TV is connected to the composite video or component video monitor output, you will need to use the AV receiver's front-panel display when changing settings.

Zone 2: In addition to the main listening room, you can also enjoy audio/video playback from a different source in another room of your home using the receiver's Zone 2 function. The receiver's Zone 2 function offers speaker level and pre-out level outputs, as well as HDMI connectivity.

    • Speaker Level Outputs: By using the receiver's Zone 2 speaker-level outputs on the VSX-1124-K, you can directly connect a secondary pair of speakers in another room of your home, allowing you to listen to 5.2ch surround sound in your main room and play a different 2ch audio source in the other room. The volume of Zone 2 can be controlled from the receiver's front-panel control or included IR remote.  Only AM/FM tuner, Network, Internet Radio, USB/iPod, and analog input audio sources can be sent to Zone 2 in this setup.
    • Preamp Level Outputs: When using the receiver's preamp output terminals for the second room you need an additional integrated amplifier to power those speakers, and the main zone of the receiver remains 7.2-channel. The volume of Zone will need to be controlled by your external integrated amplifier. Only AM/FM tuner, Network, Internet Radio, USB/iPod, and analog input audio sources can be sent to Zone 2 in this setup.
    • HDMI Output: The Pioneer receiver also provides a Zone 2 HDMI output, so two different HDMI audio/video feeds can be sent to two different displays (Main Zone & Zone 2) at the same time directly from the receiver's HDMI inputs. HDMI Zone 2 will output up to 4K video and 2-channel audio for the HDMI input source selected. Only the receiver's HDMI 1-6 input signals can be sent to Zone 2 with this type of setup. Volume will be controlled by your connected TV or receiver in Zone 2.
Note: When Internet Radio, Network, or iPod/USB is selected in the Main Zone, it is only possible to select the same input as in the Main Zone for Zone 2. When listening to AM/FM radio, you cannot select different stations for the main room and Zone 2. Optical/coaxial digital audio sources and analog video sources are not output to Zone 2.

Gapless Playback: The Pioneer AV receiver offers Gapless Playback for AIFF, Apple Lossless, WAV, FLAC, AAC, and MP3 music files. The silent section between tracks are skipped when playing music files, eliminating the interruptions that usually occur when playing live or convert contents.

Display Dimmer: You can dim or brighten the receiver's front-panel display. The brightness level can be controlled in four steps.

Sleep Timer: The receiver's Sleep Timer function can be set to 30, 60, or 90 minutes.

Auto Power Down: This function automatically turns off the power when the receiver has not operated for 2, 4, or 6 hours.

ECO Mode: The new, energy-saving ECO Mode found on all 2014 Pioneer AV receivers goes far beyond the conventional wisdom about "green" electronics, with a standby power consumption of only 0.1 watt when enabled. Pioneer's ECO Mode offers all of the convenience features of today's modern AV receivers, including Network Standby and HDMI CEC support, while reducing power consumption in both on and standby modes, you can feel better about your entertainment experience without sacrificing power or features. The intelligent ECO Mode analyzes your sources in real time, adjusting power consumption accordingly to meet your needs, or you can choose the power-saving settings that are right for you.

Firmware Updates: You can download firmware updates from the Pioneer Website for the Pioneer AV receiver using either a network or USB connection. The tested Pioneer AV receiver had firmware version 1-247-005-010-116 (s9691.5003.116); as of 11/5/2014. Visit Pioneer's AV Receiver Support Site for the latest firmware updates.

    Remote Control

Multibrand/Learning Remote Control: The supplied wireless remote is a multibrand/learning remote. The remote is pre-programmed to operate popular brands of equipment including Blu-ray/DVD players, Blu-ray/DVD recorders, CD players, TVs, and Satellite/Cable boxes. Also, the remote can learn specific commands from infrared remotes of other components.

HDMI Control: The Pioneer VSX-1124-K supports the HDMI Control function. With HDMI Control, you can synchronize operation between the Pioneer AV receiver and your HDMI CEC-compatible TV or Blu-ray disc player (equipment must be connected via HDMI). HDMI Control Functions included:

    • Synchronized Amp Mode: The receiver's volume can be set and the sound can be muted from the TV's remote control.
    • Power Synchronization: The receiver and your connected TV will power On/Off at the same time.
    • Automatic Switching Inputs: The receiver's input switches over automatically when the TV's input is changed or your Blu-ray player starts playback.

Note: Not all HDMI CEC-compatible components will be supported by this receiver.

iControlAV5 App: Download Pioneer's free iControlAV5 App (from the Apple App Store or GooglePlay Store) onto your Apple iOS or Android device for control of the AV receiver from your smartphone or tablet device. You'll be able to power on/off receiver, select input sources, choose listening modes, and control volume from the iControlAV5 app on your Apple iOS or Android device. You can even wirelessly stream music stored on your smartphone or tablet to the Pioneer AV receiver from the app.

IR Input/Output: The AV receiver offers minijack (3.5mm) input and output jacks for use with an optional IR repeater system (sold separately).

Do I need a wireless adapter to get air play to work? Can use my smart tv to stram pandora ... Or should I just buy the wireless adapter? Thanks

There is no built in wifi. If your receiver is close enough to your router you can connect the receiver to the network with a cat 5 network cable. Or you can run the audio out from your smart tv to the receiver to access pandora and other audio services. The user interface will be better on the smart tv.

You need the receiver either hard connected by Ethernet or the wireless adapter in or for AirPlay to work.

Yes, you will need a wireless adapter although I have mine hard wired. Works good for AirPlay as well, streaming right from the phone. Real good receiver, no doubt worth every penny

The Pioneer has a wired ethernet connection on the back. I have mine plugged into our home network, and I can airplay from any wireless device. If you want or need a wireless connection for the receiver, you'll need to use a usb/wireless adapter. btw - Pioneer's Control5 app can do much the same as airplay, and control the receiver as well.

I just purchased this and am wondering if its possible to do a 9.1 setup? I know you can wire 9 speakers, but only 7 channels are driven. if I use the pre out and amp the front speakers, will this drive the remaining 7? also,im a long time sony guy,so I feel like im cheating on her by going the way of pioneer. if you had to choose between the vsx1124 or the sony str dn1050,which would you choose? lastly, there are a fair amount of negative reviews regarding build quality with the pioneer. lots of this or that failed after a few months, and some this or that doesn't work like its supposed to.i realize some of these are user error, but am wondering if you have noticed any of these reports or experienced any issues first hand. thanks in advance.

    1. I don't know the answer for the 9.1 setup, I am a 5.1 user. 2. I don't buy SONY, I avoid SONY. 3. Before this receiver, I had a Pioneer VSX-D508 for 12 years. I replaced it because it was technologically outdated but it is still working. 4. I am please with Pioneer quality, no complaints.

Chris, I really can't answer your question as I have only set-up for 5 surround speakers, I have not even begun to tap the capability of this unit. this is my first unit so have no basis on which to compare.

I have tried both the sony 1050 and the pioneer 1124k and the pioneer wins on sound quality by a long shot. better defined bass, airy highs and more spaciousness to the sound overall. also the pioneer is much more adjustable sound wise. It also has pre outs which the sony lacks. the sony only betters it on the onscreen interface. your plan about using the pre outs would result in 9 speakers driven through 7 channels. build quality wise, the pioneer had a problem with volume consistancy out of the headphone jack. I solved this problem by using the pre outs to feed my headphone amp and it sounds amazing.

Chris, I have a 7.1 setup with my VSX-1124 and it works well. Movies sound especially good in surround mode. I don't know if a 9.1 setup would be possible with this unit? I've had this stereo for 5 months now and the only problem I've encountered is an occassional glitch with switching from DVD or Net Radio back to the Cable/Sat. mode. When this happens I turn the system off/on and the cable comes right back. Sony makes a good product, but I am happy with my Pioneer purchase. This unit has good AM/FM reception and the Apple AirPlay works great!--especially at this price range.

Hi Christopher. I have the VSX-1124. I don't believe this particular receiver is capable of more than 7.1 channels. You may be able to hook it up in the way you described using the pre-amp and duplicate the stereo channels or two of the surround channels but it wouldn't be true 9.1 of separate and distinct surround sound. Build quality seems to be excellent so far. I've had this for many months and no problems. From what I researched, the Sony equivalent suffered from more video issues than this model for what that's worth. I was personally intrigued by the review in Sound & Vision. It gave rave reviews on sound quality and mediocre reviews on video quality. The sound is superb. For me using a Sharp 53 inch TV, the video quality at first was troublesome. But after some adjustment playing with the contrast and brightness, it actually did improve an already excellent picture. I think is just requires some extra time adjusting in my opinion. Everything has worked well so far otherwise. Hope this helps you.

Hi, Pioneer makes both accessories but I've not seen very good reviews on either one. I connected my vac-1124 to my home network using an Apple Airpot Express. I set it up as an extended network & it works perfectly. Jeff

My understanding is that you will need an adaptor from Pioneer for both the Bluetooth and WiFi for those features to work properly. I connected an ethernet cable from my internet router to the receiver, which allows me to access internet radio stations and use the Apple AirPlay built into my I-Pad and the Pioneer receiver. This accessed station and song information is displayed on your TV Monitor thru the HDMI connection.

I purchased a wifi adapter. It was a Netgear wireless adapter. It hooked up right away and there was no problem with it. I also hooked up a chromecast to one of the HDMI ports and I can now stream video from my android phone. I'm able to pick up Pandora along with all internet radio stations with the wifi adapter. I also can play my iPad music on 11:24. It hooks up wirelessly and you don't really have to do anything to get it to come up just turn on your iPad start playing your music and the 11:24 will couple and start playing it. This is an amazing piece of electronic equipment. Very well worth it.

Can Airplay go to Zone 2 (pre-amp) while another source is being used for the main listening area? Some receivers won't do this.

I forwarded your question to an Advisor and they responded with the following: Yes, AirPlay can go to Zone 2, but it has to be playing in both zones all the time. If you would like to discuss further you can contact an Advisor directly by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat.
